in full ceremonial uniform, will give two performances on all three days of the Show. As well as this spectacular attraction, the Show will once again welcome the Ringwood Brewery Heavy Horse Musical Drive whose wonderful grace and agility will astound you. In contrast feel the excitement rise as the Inter Hunt Relay race over their testing course of jumps, so the louder you cheer the faster they go! Our theme for this year is ‘Join the Adventure’ so why not come along and try your hand at milking a cow, painting and potting, fishing and forestry or perhaps even take part in the tractor tug of war. Visit the Forest Fun Factory and be entertained by clowns, choirs, dance acts and much more! Make sure you head over to our Show Farm where the children can get up close and personal with all sorts of farmyard animals. Pop into our Countryside Area for Terrier and Ferret racing and enjoy the incredible machines in the Old Time Farming section. Follow our education trails around the Showground to learn more about agriculture, food and farming.

We will certainly be celebrating our love of horses as we host over 150 showing, jumping and in-hand classes. From the traditional New Forest pony to the magnificent show jumpers there are horses for all to enjoy. One area not to be missed is the Flower Show which boasts beautifully landscaped gardens, a plant hunters’ paradise highlighting the best horticulture from trade nurseries. The Southern Vegetable Championships and Flower Arranging competitions also produce a magnificent display and are a must-see part of the Show. There are over 600 trade stands providing some of the most varied and unusual goods and produce – from large commercial companies to small local businesses. For those of you looking to make that special purchase we really are a shoppers’ paradise. During a fun packed day at the Show, why not enjoy the vast range of food available, or visit the Food Hall for some wellearned refreshments. Whether you live in the local area or are visiting on holiday, make the New Forest & Hampshire County Show an essential part of this year’s calendar and enjoy the adventure. From Small Acorns …

A day doesn’t go by when we aren’t contacted by local entrepreneurs launching their budding businesses for our advertising rates. Unfortunately, many fall into the trap of spending all their energy, money and time on the shop, stock, vans, staff and marketing is an afterthought with little money set aside for this key factor to success. We do what we can to support these valuable businesses because they bring to the area fresh ideas, employment opportunities and, in turn, generate business to suppliers like accountants, web designers, tradesmen etc.

Discover Magazines Ltd Main: 023 8026 6388 www.discovermagazines.co.uk

ADVERTISING SALES Melanie Tinson Director Direct: 023 8027 6396 melanie@discovermagazines.co.uk

Melanie has worked in marketing communications for many years (a number she isn’t willing to admit to!) and I often listen to her patiently advising an enquirer about advert design, size, promotional ideas, websites, leaflets, radio, editorial. She’s a real fountain of knowledge; last week, by the end of the conversation the lady on the phone changed the name of her business!

ACCOUNT & DISTRIBUTION Tania Houston Director Direct: 023 8027 6361 tania@discovermagazines.co.uk Discover Itchen Valley is distributed to Hedge End, Fair Oak, Botley, Horton Heath and Bishopstoke over two monthly deliveries, 7,000 each month regularly reaching a total of 14,000 homes.

We also have a roaming Discover photographer who snapshots local people at work in the areas we distribute to (see map left) so if you know of any small business that would benefit from a bit of free publicity and feature in our Support Local Independents (see page 31) please get in touch with me. So please “Shop Local” and you will be an active part in their success.

GARDENING

Keeping healthy in the sun By Pippa Greenwood There is something lovely about this part of the summer. The veg plot tends to be in overdrive and there are some delicious fruits cropping too. But sometimes your beloved flower beds and borders, pots and planters can be looking ever-so-slightly sorry for themselves. There is often a distinct mid-summerflop. You planted up your flower beds and numerous pots and containers to make them look good but how can you keep them looking on top form for as long as possible?

Regular feeding is essential, particularly for anything growing in a container. Often crammed into a fairly small space and with compost whose fertiliser content is pretty well used up after a few weeks, by July plants in pots can be close to starving if you’ve not fed them regularly. At this time of year I would still feed herbaceous perennials and annuals growing in open ground too, but I suggest you resist the temptation to feed shrubs as these could be encouraged to put on new growth which will not be toughened up enough by the time winter comes; this late growth is then very prone to frost damage. A tomato feed with a high potash level works well for anything that you grow primarily for the flowers so every time you feed your tomatoes make up a bit of extra feed and pop it onto flowering plants. I tend to buy concentrated tomato food by the mini-tanker full as this works out much more economical! Make sure that everything is deadheaded regularly, both the faded flowers and if necessary remove the flower stem too. On soft stemmed plants you may be able to make to do it using your thumb nail, but a pair of sharp scissors or similar often makes for the quickest, neatest and least messy job. Do this as soon as the flower starts to deteriorate so that no energy whatsoever is used to form seed heads and it will make a huge difference to the performance you see the plants put on

10

over the next few weeks. I am a great believer in the ‘hair cut’ approach where perennials are given a trim using scissors or shears as soon as their flowering period is over. Do this promptly and follow it with a good feed and you can often encourage a second, later flush of flowers too. If plants have become a little too tall or there has been a lot of rainfall they can literally flop over, clogging up the lawn on borders next to the grass, and generally looking a real mess. This is easily solved if you check that stakes and other supports are still doing their job and re-position them if necessary, taking care not to snap any flower stems in the process. You may even find that you need to add a bit of extra support or tie in a few of the taller or more wayward stems – the foam-covered wire works really well for this. At this time of year many flowers succumb to common diseases. This is how to deal with them: Powdery mildew: keep the plant well watered at the base but avoid wetting the leaves and spray with a suitable fungicide if necessary Aphids: remove with a strong jet of water, introduce ladybirds or spray with an insecticide Leaf spots: just pick off the worst affected leaves Rusts: pick off the worst affected leaves, try to keep the foliage dry and spray with a suitable insecticide Caterpillars: pick off by hand or spray with a suitable biological or chemical control

Keeping on top of these small problems is essential regular checks should allow you to take prompt action, so avoiding too much damage occurring and often meaning that you do not even need to spray. Weeds tend to be growing rapidly too, so try to remove these as they make for a lot of competition for water, food and even light. Pulling them out or hoeing them off when they are still fairly small is a much easier and more efficient way to deal with them than trying to pull out a massive, long-rooted triffid that has already done a lot of damage. If the weather is dry, regular watering will also help to keep your flower beds and containers looking their best. To minimise water wastage and the risk of those delicate petals becoming scorched, I suggest that you should only water in the evening or, if this is not possible, very early in the morning. A less frequent but thorough drenching is a lot more beneficial than very frequent but light waterings. So, with a little extra TLC everything in the garden can still look gorgeous for a long while yet!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Eastleigh & Hedge End areas and Justin is finding that his approach

is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done

work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Returning for its fourth year, the home of Hampshire Cricket welcomes The Ageas Family Festival on 1st August. Alongside fantastic family entertainment, the Festival will feature the Royal London One-Day Cup – Hampshire v Middlesex, with a headline musical performance from Boyzone, one of the UKs best-loved boybands. Known for hits including ‘Love Me For A Reason’, ‘Words’, ‘No Matter What’ and ‘When The Going Gets Tough’, Boyzone is celebrating two decades in the music industry tallying up an impressive five Brit

Awards, 18 Top Ten hits on the UK Singles Chart, six number one UK hit singles and five number one albums, with 25 million records sold by 2013 worldwide. They released their sixth studio album ‘From Dublin to Detroit’ last year, featuring their favourite songs from the Motown era, including renditions of “You Can’t Hurry Love”, “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted” plus many more. Boyzone said: “After the heroics of the Irish team in the Cricket World Cup, we’re glad to be bringing a bit of the Irish craic to the Ageas Bowl on August 1st. It will be the last gig of the summer for Boyzone so we’re all looking forward to a great night.” Prior to the headlining performance by Boyzone, the cricketing action will see Hampshire face Middlesex in a Royal London One-Day Cup match. The Royal London One-Day Cup, a 50-over competition, offers a midpoint between County Championship cricket and the NatWest T20 Blast. As such, it benefits from the best of both of the aforementioned formats,

Hampshire family amazed at the benefits of soft water coming back. Working for a building firm, I know a bit about water softeners and having told my Mother-in-Law about my dilemma, she suggested I look at a Kinetico softener. She’s had one herself for a couple of years, and was evangelical about the benefits of soft water and the difference it’s made. We asked our local Kinetico Dealer, Advanced Water Softeners, around to come and talk to us. I didn’t need much convincing.

The water in the South, specifically the Southampton area, is very hard – the consequence is one many households can relate to – the dreaded limescale. Mrs. Tombs from the Bassett area of Southampton was no exception. She said, “With a busy life and working full-time I really don’t have time to spend constantly cleaning. I have two bathrooms in my home and to keep them looking like new is an on-going battle against limescale. Crusty and unsightly scale around the taps and my kitchen draining board is such a mess. Heaven only knows what effect it was having on our heating system. I used to use spray-on products that got rid of it temporarily – but that’s all it was, temporary and the limescale just kept

The Kinetico 2020c softener was installed in just a few hours, there was no mess and I requested that it be installed outside in a housed-unit – this wasn’t a problem at all and it works brilliantly. The difference I have noticed in just 4 weeks is incredible – shiny draining boards, crystal clear sanitary ware and a shower to be proud of. I am no longer worried about scale clogging up our heating system or boiler. I have no hesitation in recommending a Kinetico Water Softener and our local Dealer, Advanced Water Softeners, to my friends, family and indeed anyone.”

Banish limescale from your Hampshire home forever!

It’s easy with a Kinetico 2020c Water Softener

Botley Flour Mills, SO30 2GB Botley Mill is a collection of independent traders and artisans. Wendy Collins has been proprietor of Interior Transformations for 24 years, most of that time in the village centre but for the last four and a bit years at the Mill. “The Mill is a lovely little community of like-minded business people and is a lovely place to visit and to come to work, especially now there is a lovely wine bar next door.” While talking to Discover she added that many of the big stores, once famous for their fabrics, are stopping the stocking of such items. “It is up to the independent such as myself to stock and supply fabrics now and it has become a huge part of my business.”

Hampshire Hornets Wheelchair Basketball Club inspires local disabled children to become awesome athletes Hampshire Hornets provides the opportunity for disabled children and teenagers aged between 7-19 years to excel at sport. It burns with a passion to motivate, challenge and inspire young people who are often marginalised at school and within the wider community to play fast and at times, fiercely competitive, basketball. Based at Crestwood College in Eastleigh, the Club meets every Sunday

morning between 10-12noon with players paying just £10 per month to cover hall hire. It has grown from humble beginnings to one now moving from strength to strength. The team comprises younger disabled children under 10 years old, plus two older competitive teams – an Under 15s and a new Under 19s developmental team – who compete nationally in Lord Taverners’ Wheelchair Basketball

Regional and National competitions. “We regularly have 15+ disabled children training and playing alongside their disabled and able-bodied friends and family every week”, said Sharon Collins, one of the player’s parents. “But Hornets is more than just a sports Club – although it enables disabled young people to excel at sport, it’s sometimes bigger role is helping players to forget their worries, build positive self-esteem and personal confidence and help forge lasting friendships. Hornets provides a really positive outlet to channel frustrations created by the physical limitations of daily life.” The team welcomes disabled players of all abilities. No previous experience is necessary. Sports wheelchairs are provided. FINANCE

How to Cut the Cost of Your Summer Holiday By Ann Haldon From currency exchange to travel insurance and car hire, it’s possible to significantly cut the cost of holidaying abroad. Here are a few tips to shave a little off your holiday spend. Credit cards The fees typically charged by credit card companies are: • Foreign exchange fee: generally 3% of the amount converted from sterling into a foreign currency. • Cash withdrawal fee: between 2% and 3% of the amount withdrawn The availability of ‘specialist’ credit cards with no, or low fees, allows you to avoid these charges when you go on holiday. The Halifax Clarity credit card is a good example. At the time of writing there’s no charge for spending abroad with this card, and no cash withdrawal fee. It’s accepted anywhere that displays the MasterCard symbol. Interest will still be charged on cash withdrawals from the date you take the money out however, until the day it’s repaid in full. Even this fee can be reduced if you’re prepared to pay off the balance via internet banking while you’re away, or if this isn’t an option, as soon as you get home. As a side note, it’s advisable to inform your credit card company that 36

you’re travelling abroad, otherwise they may stop your card in the belief that it’s fallen into the wrong hands. Prepaid cards Prepaid cards are pre-loaded with money before you go. The balance gradually decreases as you spend, but can be topped up again as and when you need it. With these cards the exchange rate is always set by the card provider, and applied when the card is loaded rather than each time you use it. This could work for or against you, depending on fluctuations in the foreign exchange market. If you’re thinking of purchasing one of these cards and the rate suddenly improves, you’ll be taking advantage of a strengthened Pound. Equally, you could lose out if the rate improves again later. Although very convenient, you may encounter a range of fees with a prepaid card, depending on the provider: • Application fee: generally around £10 • Renewal fee: some providers set an expiry date and then charge a replacement fee of around £5 to renew the card, even if there’s a balance remaining • Cash withdrawal fee: check with your provider to see if they charge a fee for withdrawing cash at ATMs • Inactivity charge: usually around £2 per month if the card is not used regularly Holiday insurance

Buying well in advance of your holiday is the best way to save money on holiday insurance. Search a couple of price comparison sites such as Compare the Market or Money Supermarket to find the best deals. Also consider: • Whether you are planning to take more than one trip abroad during the year. If so, a multi-trip insurance policy would be the most cost-effective. • Where you are travelling - you’ll have to choose between worldwide or European insurance. • If you’re likely to be participating in any risky sports such as scuba diving, the policy may be loaded with an extra charge. Booking your travel insurance independently via the internet will generally work out cheaper than buying as an add on to flights or a package tour. Alternatively, ‘packaged’ bank accounts sometimes include annual travel insurance in their monthly fee. Another good way to save money on your insurance premium is to opt to pay a larger excess in the event of a claim. Hire car charges • There are several ways to save money on hiring a car: • Book early to get the best deals • Include car hire in your package deal • Organise your own Collision Damage Waiver add-on

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) covers the excess you would have to pay if you were involved in a crash. Many hire car operators adopt a ‘hard sell’ approach in relation to CDW when you pick the car up, as this is the way they make their profit - by selling add-ons to ‘basic’ insurance. You can find your own Collision Damage Waiver insurance though. Save some money in the process by searching online using a price comparison site you may even get some cash back. Airport parking As with car hire, booking early is the best way to save on airport parking. Even pre-booking on the day of the flight could save you a little money. Turning up at the car park is guaranteed to be the most expensive. The Money Saving Expert website is a good source of tips on where to find travel-related discounts and offers, including airport car parking. If you’re staying at an airport hotel the night before your flight, you may be able to book a package that includes the room plus parking for the duration of your holiday. Despite the economy picking up a little, most of us are still being careful to find the best deals when travelling abroad. Searching for discounts can be fun, and the money saved might as well line your pockets as those of the travel agent or credit card company.

Barton Peveril Class of 75 Reunion WHEN three old school pals met for the first time since their sixth form days this photo brought back many memories and sparked plans for a class reunion - 40 years on. At the start in March the three knew of only six others from the Barton Peveril class of ‘75 but since then word of mouth, internet searches and the help of other enthusiasts have put the reunion organisers in touch with more than 100 of their college mates. The group’s locations range from Hampshire to as far afield as Australia and New Zealand and their list of occupations is almost an A-Z of careers from accountant and business entrepreneur to writer and zoologist.

The ‘class of 75’ started the sixth form in the year that Barton Peveril in Eastleigh became a sixth form college, and were the first graduates of the new system. It was previously a grammar school and half of this year group had attended since age 11. For the reunion on November 21, a return visit has been arranged

to the college, now completely remodelled. The class of 75 will find that the ‘New Block’ has been replaced by the even newer Hampshire Building, and the temporary ‘terrapin’ huts by the Nobel Building. The assembly hall, scene of productions of Macbeth, My Fair Lady and Oh! What a Lovely War, has become a smaller, lecture theatre.

The organisers would love to hear from more people in the photo, or others who studied in the same year group between 1968 and 1975. They can email bpclassof75@yahoo.co.uk. There’s also information on the Facebook page www.facebook.com/BartonPeverilClassof75

BEAUTY

Belle of the Beach Late nights, lazy days at the beach and endless mojitos… we do love summer holidays. Whether you’re heading off for a week in the Canaries, catching a cruise ship to the Caribbean, or just taking the kids camping to Cornwall, feast your eyes on our pick of the latest beauty releases.

If you like ‘buying British’ you’ll love the new British Botanical Shower Cream from Elemis, which uses UKsourced ingredients such as chamomile, lavender, rosemary and oats. It smells divine and is incredibly nourishing. At £24 it is rather pricey, but definitely one to consider if you fancy treating yourself. Looking for a sun cream that’s suitable for all the family? Try Green People’s Organic Children Scent Free Sun Lotion, £16.95. It’s non-greasy and rubs in more easily than a lot of the other natural sunscreens on the market. Offering both UVA and UVB protection, with a choice of SPF 25 or 30, it offers great all round protection. Plus it’s packed with fruit and seed oils, including avocado, olive and aloe vera, and is kind to sensitive skin. It is water-resistant, but won’t survive a long swim in the pool, so do make sure that you reapply it regularly. If you prefer a lipstick to a gloss, but hate the drying effect that some lipsticks can have, you’ll want to get your hands on one of the new Burt’s Bees Lip Crayons. 100% natural, the crayons use shea butter, jojoba oil and kendi oil to soften and

40

moisturise your lips. I could still feel the difference by the next day. There are six shades available. My personal favourite is Sedana Sands – a natural pink with just a hint of caramel, which is perfect for summer. Burt’s Bees Lip Crayons are priced at £8.99 and are available from Debenhams, Fenwick and www.burtsbees.co.uk.

We all know the risks, but when the sun is shining and we’re baring our pins on a golden beach, we can’t help but want a tan. Sometimes it’s OK to fake it, and tanning is one of those occasions. Don’t let the visions of Oompa Loompa lookalikes put you off; fake tans have come a long way and you no longer have to choose between milk bottle white or tangerine orange. For best results, wax or shave the day before, exfoliate well, then follow with a body lotion. Wait until the lotion is fully absorbed

before applying the tan. New to the UK market is Aussie tanning brand Black Magic. Try the Black Magic Instant Tanning Mousse, £23, which is tinted, extremely easy to apply and comes with a mitt to keep your hands stain-free. www.blackmagictan.co.uk If late night cocktails have left your skin looking a bit lacklustre, or you just don’t fancy slapping on foundation in the heat, give Origins GinZing™ EnergyBoosting Moisturizer, £23, a go. Designed to ‘wake up’ tired looking skin and leave it with a healthier looking glow, it’s no surprise that this has quickly become one of Origins’ ‘hero’ products. A 75ml limited edition version was released this spring, featuring a funky coffee bean lid, but it was snapped up pretty quickly. Still, you may be lucky and find one lurking at the back of a shelf in Debenhams…

What is a Dental Implant? a dental implant is an artificial replacement for a tooth root, usually made from titanium. there are many different implant systems available and when competently used they all deliver a highly reliable form of treatment. the main aim during the placement of any implant is to achieve immediate close contact with the surrounding bone. over time further growth of bone onto the implant surface enhances the stability of the implant. Frequently AskeD questIons Will I be able to eat what I like afterwards? Once completed, patients should be able to eat a normal, healthy diet with little or no difficulty. What Costs are involved in implant treatment? The cost can vary, depending on the degree and extent of treatment required. The full cost is therefore explained and confirmed in a written treatment plan from your implant dentist.

How long will it take? Implant treatment usually requires a number of appointments over a period of months. In some cases, however, implant work can be completed in a much shorter period. How long will it last? Once treatment s completed a regular routine of dental hygiene and regular check-ups should ensure that implants last for many years. Am I too old for implant treatment? There is no upper age limit for patients to undergo implant treatment, provided they continue to enjoy reasonably good health. Is the treatment painful? Patients are often surprised at how little discomfort they experience during and after implant procedures.

INTERVIEW

Leona Lewis X Factor winner, Leona Lewis, is back with a new single, album and tour. The Evening Breeze’s Lucy Ambache caught up with her. So you’ve signed with a new record label. Is that like the first day of school? It’s just a whole new vibe and energy. The team are amazing - it’s been really good! And what was it like parting with Simon Cowell. Was it difficult? Yeah it was. Because we’d worked together for years and he’s been amazing to me. Simon’s not there on the ground A& R’ing my records with me. At first he was more but X Factor’s now in a thousand million different countries and he’s all over the place and it’s difficult to pin him down and I just needed to do my own thing, and go my own way. But I still have so much love for him and we’ve got a good relationship still.

So let’s talk about ‘Fire Under My Feet’. It’s uplifting, it’s got a bit of gospel feel, it’s very earthy and very free which is what I love about it. Because I still think of you in the ballad niche. Is that annoying? No because I still have those ballads on (the album) and I love singing those songs. There’s an amazing song by Dianne Warren on the CD that I really love, and that’s a huge ballad so there’s still that sort of thing there.

I still do opera. I’ve recorded a couple of classical songs and I love the training behind it and the discipline. I think it’s a great foundation for any singer. You strike me as a shy person so how do you feel when you go on stage? I’ve been performing for such a long time that it feels natural and something that I do. You’re alright with 20,000 people staring at you?

You’ve an amazing mezzo soprano voice which spans four octaves. What do you think is special about your vocal range?

I’ve been alright so far. I still get nervous of course but somehow I get through it. I love what I do!

I was classically trained which I suppose helps. I thought I was going to be an opera singer - and so did my mum.

You are a fellow vegetarian. Since you were twelve?

Would you go back to opera?

What made you turn to vegetarianism?

Yeah Once I knew that the sausage was a pig, I was like “no no.. no thank you”. What about when you go around to people’s houses? Do you ever feel bad? I do! I get that when I go round to my sister’s in law! (laughs)

How do you take that moment and take that deep breath? Usually it takes something quite drastic to happen and I felt it did take that with me in that what sparked me to leave was that I was told I had to do a record of covers which I didn’t want to do. And it just wasn’t me. So that sparked me to leave. Although it’s scary, I think it’s a good thing.

Lucy Ambache presents ‘The Evening Breeze’ Sunday to Thursday 7-10pm on The Breeze. Find out more at www.breeze.com. 47
