It’s Never Too Late My neighbour decided she’d had enough of the pressure at Daily Echo and became a dog walker at what is considered late in life and couldn’t be happier. A new advertiser I was chatting to in our Chandlers Ford edition turned her back on the grinding commute to London and now successfully designs and plants gardens. When an octogenarian runs a marathon it makes headline news; Harriette Thompson completed her first marathon at 92 having taken up running at the ripe old age of 72! Patience pays off with parents My husband and I have parents in their eighties and, as others do I’m sure, encourage them to make the most of today’s technology. Teaching my father in law, David, how to swipe, touch and double tap a mobile phone was amazingly difficult. Instructing my father on the video feature of Skype (“Why do I need to see you? I know what you look like”….) proved beyond his grasp. But we got there. They did it. David now monitors the world’s shipping lanes with an App and I can wave to Dad like he’s just next door. Are you a pensioner AND musician or poet? So, if you think you can’t take up new challenges because of your age then please think again. The Art House in Southampton runs an Open Mic evening for musicians and poets; all ages really are welcome … check out my father on page 9!

Nicotine Without The Nasties

smoking causes one in every five deaths in over 35s in england, killing half of all long-term smokers prematurely. in light of this, and research confirming the dangers of second-hand and thirdhand smoke, it’s not surprising many smokers are now seeking tobacco alternatives. Nicotine isn’t responsible for the damage cigarettes cause, but it’s addictive, and withdrawal makes addicts feel restless, anxious and depressed (hence the illusion that cigarettes ‘calm their nerves’). Smokers want alternatives that deliver nicotine without cigarettes’ arsenic, cyanide, tar and other toxic nasties that harm themselves and others. e-Cigarettes (and Mods, Vape sticks, personal Vaporisers) E-cigarettes are somewhat controversial due to the rapid growth and lack of regulation in the industry. Safety concerns include: • Safety of supposedly ‘safe’ 10

ingredients, such as flavourings – although some are certified safe to eat, experts say this doesn’t necessarily mean they’re safe to inhale • The inclusion of unspecified or dangerous chemicals such as aldehydes • Inconsistent or unspecified nicotine quantities • Throat irritation due to allergy to ingredients, such as nut flavourings or propylene glycol The NHS QuitForLife campaign warns: “E-cigarettes are significantly less harmful than tobacco cigarettes but are not harmless. Their long term health impact is unknown.” While some e-cigarettes look similar to normal cigarettes, others look very different. However, they’re all batteryoperated and work by heating the cartridge or refillable ‘tank’ of nicotine liquid to produce vapour when the user inhales and airflow is detected. E-cigarettes are not currently licensed for prescription, but after May 2016, any e-cigarettes containing over 20mg/ml of nicotine will require authorisation

by the Medicine and Healthcare Products Agency (MHRA). Nicotine Replacement Therapy Products provide nicotine in a variety of ways and strengths, reducing cravings and alleviating withdrawal symptoms. patches Patches are popular, as they are discreet, release a steady dose of nicotine into the bloodstream, and are available in a variety of doses and release times, allowing you to gradually reduce your dosage. Lozenges and soluble sublingual tablets 1mg, 2mg and 4mg nicotine lozenges and 2mg sublingual tablets dissolve slowly in the mouth, releasing nicotine. Mouth sprays 1mg mouth sprays are used to supply a burst of nicotine to reduce cravings. Chewing gum Nicotine gum gives a burst of nicotine, just as a cigarette does, and can be used whenever you have the urge for a cigarette. 2mg and 4mg gums are available in a

variety of flavours including mint, fruit and liquorice. The gum is chewed slowly until a tingling or nicotine taste is detected; then you can cease chewing until the tingling has subsided. Exceeding maximum quantities and chewing gum without breaks can cause side effects such as heartburn or nausea. inhalators 15mg inhalators release nicotine from a cartridge when you breathe in, and can be useful if you initially find the habit of holding and inhaling from a cigarette hard to break. One cartridge lasts around 40 minutes. nasal sprays The 10mg nasal sprays may be best suited to heavy smokers, as they rapidly deliver a strong dose of nicotine. Remember that these products aren’t for indefinite use, but are intended to help you reduce and ultimately quit smoking. Nicotine is an addictive drug with a range of mental and physical side effects. The NHS QuitforLife campaign warns that nicotine products should be kept away from children and animals, as pure nicotine is a poison that’s lethal in high doses and toxic to the skin at high concentrations.

INTERVIEW

Jamie Lawson Jamie Lawson is the first signing to Ed Sheeran’s record label ‘Gingerbread Records’ and has already had a huge worldwide hit with his single ‘Wasn’t Expecting That’ and brought out his self-titled album ‘Jamie Lawson’ in October. Lucy Ambache from the Evening Breeze caught up with him to talk about Ed, touring with One Direction and hair. Love the new single! Thank you for playing it. It’s surreal to hear it on the radio but a thrill. What percentage of interview time do people spend talking about Ed Sheeran? About 80%! He’s quite instrumental in the whole thing so I’m actually quite happy to talk about him

You’ve got a tinge of the red hair as well. Did he sign you because you had similar hair?

doing meet and greets, and the queue got longer and longer every night. It’s been brilliant!

I expect so. It was in the contract! <laughs>

Do you think you’ll get a queue length the same as Harry Styles soon?

Ed says amazing stuff about you including “the first person I had to sign was Jamie”.

No! Probably not. I’m not quite as young and pretty as Harry.

That’s very nice of him, isn’t it? No pressure though! No not at all. When someone believes in you that much, there isn’t a lot of pressure in fairness. He just winds you up and lets you go! Is Ed a nice guy? Yeah. He’s pretty much exactly as you imagine him to be. Let’s talk about you. The album is called ‘Jamie Lawson’. Is the single an accurate taster of the album? Yeah in a way, musically, it’s like that song expanded. It’s acoustic based and relatively gentle but there’s drums and a horn section, along with a Hammond (organ). So I wanted to make a warm, spacious, loving, big hug of a record. That was my plan.

What’s it like on tour with the boys? Is it “lads lads lads, banter banter banter”? I think they’re probably too busy. Harry came over on the first night and said hello and thank you. So that’s been quite cool. I do a feature on the show called ‘Naughty At 7.40’ - do you have any terrible housemate or even showbiz stories? I’m the least rock and roll person I’ve ever met! I’m not very wild. Are you more about herbal teas and an early night? Probably <laughs>. A night in front of Nashville on TV – that’s my ideal.

You went on tour with One Direction. Did their fans take to you? Yeah – strangely. I was apprehensive thinking they maybe wouldn’t but they’ve been really receptive, warm and loving. After my show, before One Direction came on, I was 12

HMS M.33 FIRST World War survivor HMS M.33 has welcomed its 50,000th visitor after a poignant launch event held earlier this year. The warship, which fought in the Gallipoli campaign, has been wowing visitors at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard since it opened as an attraction in August 2015. The opening of the ship to the public marked a special milestone for all those involved after years of securing her future and conservation works. Lesley Wills, a descendant of Richard Chapple who served on the M.33 during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915, was there at the launch event and has visited the ship several times. “I came down with a school group a few weeks ago and it was a brilliant experience for them. I was with children who knew nothing about the Gallipoli Campaign but yet they were enthralled by everything, especially the film. Duty Manager at the NMRN, Dave Hartley, said: “Feedback from surveys has been overwhelmingly

positive with many highlighting the enthusiasm and knowledge of the staff and volunteers on board. Many visitors say the film shown in the ship’s engine room is very moving. “The film really hits home, about the Gallipoli Campaign and what the men suffered. There’s a lot of depth to it. “Everyone always asks about the ‘Pig Snout’ at the bow of the ship, two holes in between both anchors at the front. It was a bit of an enigma really, but we think tow lines were put through them to move the ship when it did not have engines.”

Help I Haven’t Got A Will! One of the most important documents you will sign is your will and making a will should not be overlooked or avoided. Why use a solicitor? Using an unregulated and uninsured will writer may result in a badly drafted will, with hidden charges, poor tax planning, estates being subject to the rigid rules of intestacy and vulnerable beneficiaries at risk of financial abuse, loss of benefits or without adequate provision from their parents’ estate.

Why should I make a Will? • you decide who benefits from your money and possessions after your death • you avoid the Rules of Intestacy • you choose who you want to administer your estate i.e. your Executors • you can avoid family arguments and expense by making everything clear • you can maximise any reliefs from Inheritance Tax that are available to you • peace of mind

Solicitors are regulated and act in accordance with their professional rules. You need to know what to expect when using the services of a solicitor which is why we will provide you with accurate information about what we will do for you and how much you will pay for our services. Our fees must be agreed with you before any work is carried out on your behalf.

What should I do if I already have a Will? You ought to review your will every three to five years. Simple changes like a change of address do not mean you have to rewrite your will. Significant events for example getting married, starting a family or inheriting money ought to prompt you to review or rewrite your will.

At Driver Belcher Solicitors we have a specialist team who are highly qualified in the preparation of wills and all other aspects of your personal legal affairs.

For more information contact Jenny Walker on 01489 892010 or by email: jwalker@driverbelcher.co.uk.

Hampshire Showcases Key Development Sites Hampshire County Council, alongside national commercial marketing agency Lambert Smith Hampton, has launched Hampshire’s first Key Development Sites Portfolio to showcase the major development and investment opportunities in the county. Featuring 32 commercial and mixed-use development sites and over 500 hectares of land for development, the Portfolio highlights sites that can accommodate businesses looking to invest and grow. Councillor Seán Woodward, Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment said: “This vital resource provides a comprehensive overview of a diverse range of development opportunities across Hampshire to attract investment and businesses which will, in turn, create jobs.” “The market to attract investment, within the UK and beyond, is increasingly competitive, and it’s critical that we showcase these opportunities to potential developers, investors and of course occupier businesses.” The sites were identified on the basis of being employment led and have a threshold of around

15,000 square metres of potential floor space. Sites in both public and private sector ownership have been included. A new online map promotes all 32 development sites suitable for a range of employment uses, including office, distribution and industrial. The Invest in Hampshire website also provides a wealth of information with downloadable resources that include an overview of each development, site plans, aerial photography, site size and floor space provision, transport links, current planning status, ownership and key contacts. Learn more about Hampshire’s Key Development Portfolio by visiting the Invest in Hampshire Website. www.investinhampshire.co.uk/eng/key-development-sites

GARDENING

Make Room For Roses By Pippa Greenwood

it’s the perfect time of year to plant roses, and there should be a good selection in local garden centres or from specialist rose nurseries. although roses look good in beds, borders and containers, why not create your own fantasy rose arch or roseclad arbour?

Transform an existing arch or pergola by planting roses now to ensure fabulous colour for many summers to come. Alternatively, create your own using sturdy timber or buy a good quality wooden or metal arch or pergola kit. Start by deciding whether to use ramblers or climbers to cover your pergola or arch. Ramblers are easier to train but only flower once a year, whereas many climbers have two flowering periods or flower intermittently for months. Many roses are strongly coloured, so ensure that these will look good with adjacent planting and will not clash with nearby painted or treated surfaces such as decking or garden furniture. Perfume is a vital ingredient - walking beneath an arch or pergola laden with perfumed roses on a warm summer’s evening takes some beating! If you get your roses delivered, don’t be put off if they have somewhat lopsided roots, uninspiring woody stems and little else. This is normal, but despite their forlorn appearance they usually establish well. Do try to plant as soon as possible, but if not make sure that you

20

keep the root systems moist by wrapping in thoroughly moistened hessian or by burying the roots temporarily in garden soil. Make your planting hole close to the base of the arch or pergola: a distance of about 30 – 45 cm (12 – 18 in) works well, but keep away from concrete footings or other material located in the soil. Although roses quite like fairly heavy soil, for clay soils likely to waterlogging prepare a sizeable area before planting by digging in well rotted manure, garden compost and grit, which also ensures good fertility. If the roots of bare root roses are lopsided and crammed together, spread them out before planting. Soak the roots in water for a couple of hours before prising them apart, prune out any which have been damaged and plant the rose immediately. Ensure you plant at the correct depth: the swollen graft point slightly above where the roots start protruding should be just above soil level. Once in place, keep your rose well watered during dry conditions, paying particular care over the next 18 months. Apply rose fertiliser and top up the mulch in spring.

Newly purchased roses are unlikely to have much in the way of top growth, but once they get going you will obviously need to train these stems into the arch or pergola, securing them at regular intervals with great care, so that they are not damaged by being buffeted against the arch or pergola during windy weather. I like to use the steel wire with a dense foam covering – strong but soft! Good varieties for planting over pergolas and arches include Veilchenblau ‘Paul’s Scarlet’ (climber), Excelsa ‘Crimson Shower’, Albertine Albericbarbier ‘Golden Showers’, ‘Iceberg’ (climber), Malvern Hills ‘Super Fairy’, ‘Gloire de Dijon’, ‘Zéphirine Drouhin’.

Make vegetable growing fun with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select the vegetables you’d like to grow at www.pippagreenwood. com and your garden-ready plants will be delivered in May, accompanied by weekly emails packed full of advice and tips. It is great value and various pack sizes are available. Gift cards are available too.

FINANCE

A Fresh Financial Start In 2016 – Begin The New Year With A Budget if you’ve overspent this Christmas, you might be wondering how to get your finances back under control. it’s easy to get carried away by the spirit of giving – the problem is, it can jeopardise your financial wellbeing into the new year and beyond. so what can you do to get yourself back onto a firm financial footing? One of the first things is to analyse your finances and make a realistic budget. By taking a longterm view and identifying exactly how much you spend during the course of a year, you can take back control of your dwindling finances, and prevent spiralling into long-term debt. Why budget? A budget helps to establish whether you’re living beyond your means. This isn’t always obvious on a day-to-day basis but if you’re constantly spending more than you earn, at some point you might find yourself unable to keep a roof over your head. But there’s a secret to making a budget that’s fit for purpose, and that’s to incorporate every expense that you make during the course of the year, including Christmas, birthdays, summer holidays and more. Birthdays and Christmas Friends’ and family’s birthdays may only cost a few pounds here 26

and there, but over the course of a year, and in addition to Christmas expenses, constitute a significant chunk of annual expenditure. It’s going to take some time to calculate your total spend for the year, but once it’s done you’ll be able to use it confidently to improve your long-term financial situation, and set yourself up for a lifetime of control. non-regular expenses, plus how much is coming in Motoring costs such as car insurance, tax, new tyres and the annual service, are easily forgotten. Annual membership subscriptions are also often left out, as is one of the biggest expenses of the year - the summer holiday. When thinking about the money that comes in, don’t forget to include wages, benefit and pension payments, and any income from savings, investments or self-employment. Once you’ve totalled the figures, deduct your expenses and hopefully you’ll be left with a positive number. not a static document Your budget isn’t meant to be a static document. It needs to reflect your income and spending in the long-term, and this is

likely to change often. So make it part of your routine to update it regularly, and make sure new expenses and sources of income are carefully recorded. Having a clear idea of where your money goes will also help to meet specific financial goals such as saving for retirement, putting money away for a deposit, or simply avoiding debt. Achieving financial clarity in this way helps you to live the life you want, so don’t view it as a restriction on spending – it’s more like the road to freedom. so you’ve got all your figures – what now? There’s a great way to divide up your money called ‘piggybanking.’ It’s described in detail on the Money Saving Expert website, and essentially means opening a separate bank account for each of your main categories of spending. This allows you to allocate an amount of money to each one via standing order from the main account. The word ‘budget’ often implies having to go without, but knowing your spending patterns and gaining financial control can give you back your freedom – the freedom to enjoy life without the worry of debt.

Locks Heath Swimming Squad Results from the Peter Bull Meet Shannon Lamb also went on to collect more medals. Bronze in her 50m fly and silvers for her 50 and 100m back, 100m free, and 200m IM, time for a larger medal cabinet I think. Grace Goddard (10) glided through the water and deserved her well earnt 1st place position in her 200m breast which was also a County qualification time. Grace also won gold in 50m breast, a very proud moment for her parents! May Fletcher (11) managed gold in her 100IM, worth waiting all day for that race to come round! This medal added to the collection of two silvers in both her 100M and 200M back. To top the weekend off May also managed HQT in her 50 back.

Swimmers from Locks Heath Swimming Squad took a trip to Waterlooville on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd November to compete in the Peter Bull Meet, and a very worthwhile visit it was! There were some fantastic swims from ALL swimmers, a total of 142 races resulting in 97 personal bests, 6 golds, 15 silvers and 14 bronzes, and to top it off there were 11 Hampshire qualifying times. A warm welcome to some new team members, Abigail Russell, Callum Elcombe and Katie Schuster, and a successful debut for all with loads of personal best times being posted. Mia Day was at the top of her game, 4 County qualification times gained over the weekend in 100 and 200m free, 50m back and 200m Individual Medley, something to be really proud of. Mia also collected some medals and received a bronze in 50m fly and silver in 100m free, a real superstar that shone this weekend. 200m freestyle proved to be a top race for the girls. Silver medals were awarded to Evelyn Hall (11), Shannon Lamb (12) and Amelia Ayling (10) also another County time for Amelia. Evelyn Hall also secured gold in her 50m free and added 3 County Qualification times to her collection in 200m free, 200m IM and 200m back. 28

So onto the boys, who didn’t want to be out done by the success of the girls! Kyle Kirkland (11) had a successful weekend of racing, securing a 200 free HQT and a bronze medal. Three was Kyles lucky number as he went on to win bronze medals in his 100M back, 50M and 100M breast. Congratulations. Jan Stoop (12) managed some fantastic PB’S topped off with a bronze medal in his 100M IM, an extra special weekend of racing as his dad was home from being away to witness a full weekend of some great swims. Scott Hutin (10) won a bronze medal in his 50M fly, very well done young man. For one so young he really puts his heart and soul into racing so a well earnt medal. Joshua Beaudro (11) swam both days and one of the last events of the weekend made the long wait worthwhile with some great personal bests under his belt, he finished off with a silver medal in his 200IM. Other competing swimmers who collectively added to the success of some great personal bests were, Matilda Hall, Isla Croll, Hannah Roberts, Ella Richardson-Fitt, Isabel and Sarah Barbary, Eve Limburn, Lucy Briscoe, Abigail Russell, Katie Schuster, Thomas Larby, Taylor Gargiulo, Taylor and Matthew Collins, James Hall and Jacob Richardson-Fitt.

HOBBIES

Has the Great Pottery Throwdown fired you up? By Kate McLelland

the BBC’s great pottery throwdown finished in december after its first successful series. Like Bake off, it has helped the British public to understand more about the creation of artisan products, whether that’s a sourdough loaf or a set of stackable breakfast bowls.

The expression ‘throwing’ comes from the way the clay is thrown onto the centre of a flat, spinning tray (the potter’s wheel) and squeezed into shape as it revolves at speed. You’ll need quite a lot of strength in your hands to do this, as well as patience to cope with those early failures!

Since the series ended many viewers have been eager to try pottery making for themselves. So if you’re thinking of joining a class, what are the basic things you should know before you start?

it’s slow When an object is first made it is loaded with water and must be thoroughly and evenly dried out before it is fired. That’s a minimum of a week for freshly made (or ‘green’) objects to become kiln ready.

it’s messy! The two essential ingredients when making pottery are clay and water – combine that with a wheel that spins your wet clay object around, and you get the picture. Be prepared to wear old clothes and shoes, cut your nails, tie back your hair and bring an apron that covers from the chest down! it’s not all about the wheel There are two different methods for making objects out of clay, hand-building and wheel throwing. You can use handbuilding techniques to create a ‘pinch pot’ by making rolls of clay and combining them into a single shape. Alternatively make a ‘slab pot’ by rolling the clay into flat slabs to create a square or rectangular shape. 32

it’s a science as well as a craft A pottery oven (kiln) is not the same as a domestic oven and an apprentice potter will need to learn how clay and glazes react when heated to high temperatures. The process of heating clay and glazes to reach their optimal point of melting is usually achieved over two steps. Bisque firing is the first stage, where unglazed pots are heated just enough for them to be able to take the glaze that will give them their final, glossy finish. Once glazes have been applied the pots go back into the kiln for the glaze firing. it needs space and investment Once you’ve learned all you can in class and decide to go it alone,

you’ll need to find space for your hobby. Consider where you’ll put the wheel and the kiln, where you’ll paint and glaze your pots and where you can leave them to dry. The equipment can be costly – expect to spend between £600 and £2,000 on a potter’s wheel and £1,000-£4,000 on a kiln, and that’s without all the accessories and materials you’ll need to make the pots themselves. Once again, the BBC has opened our eyes to a craft that has been largely overlooked in recent years. The Great Pottery Throwdown may not eventually prove as successful as The Great British Bake-Off, but at least it has helped us to understand the skill, passion and commitment required to make a simple pottery object that can be used and enjoyed for years. Pottery courses are run at Eastleigh College, My Pottery in Marlands Centre, Southampton www.my-pottery.co.uk 07830298809 Tidal Arts and Crafts meet on the last Wednesday of every month at Testwood School,Totton. Dig Day Keen volunteers braved the winter weather to help tidy the Environmental Area at Hook-with-Warsash C of E Academy. All the budding helpers were kept busy by cutting back trees, clearing paths and trimming hedges. The Environmental Area at the school has a pond, willow tunnel, sensory garden and woodland. The area allows pupils at the school to study pond life and compare different habitats within the school grounds. The garden is maintained by volunteers including parents, pupils, teachers and even grandparents.

The school allows the local community to use the area and is regularly visited by local pre-schools and other groups such as Brownies and cubs. Pupils at the school enjoy the chance for Welly Walks in the grounds during which they spend time exploring the area and learning in the outdoors whatever the weather! Hook-with-Warsash C of E Academy would like to thank all the helpers who came on the day and gave up part of their weekend to make a big difference to the school. We would also like to thank the school’s dedicated PTFA who provided delicious home-made food to keep the volunteers refreshed. If you are part of a local group and would like to use the area please feel free to contact the school on (01489) 572393.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Locks Heath & Whiteley areas and Justin is finding that his

approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

HOME INTERIORS

New Year, New Style? Know for its designer covers for Ikea furniture, Bemz predicts a ‘Deco Glam’ style for this year.

if your new year’s resolution is to refresh your home with a fashionable look, interiors expert Katherine sorrell can help.

One of Dulux’s key trends for 2016 is ‘Heritage & Future’, including reds that reflect our rich heritage, but also have a bright contemporary feel that points to the future. 38

Where do I start? Think about what parts of your home feel most tired and unloved - perhaps walls could do with a wash of fresh paint. Dulux’s colour of the year is Cherished Gold, a gold-influenced ochre that can be used on its own as a statement or as a highlight in combination with other hues. The overall colour palette for this year is muted, warm and soft yet also sophisticated - think coral, not orange; ochre not yellow and midnight, not blue. Another of Dulux’s 2016 themes is to have vintage and antique references support those of the modernday in a palette that includes chocolate, sand, a deep, pinkish red, muted orange and spicy browns. Ideal to overhaul any style of property. More easy updates You may not be in the market for buying new furniture, but there are still ways to update your old pieces for a fabulous new look. Ikea has identified a key trend this year for personalisation – just look at what can be done with an inexpensive chest of drawers, spray paint and some imagination. On a subtler note, a

change of paint colour, or even a wood stain, combined with new knobs or pulls will give wooden furniture a new lease of life, while for really on-trend attitude you could have a table top covered in marble, slate or zinc. Keep going around the house. Add interest to dull walls with an eye-catching, stick-on-peel-off design, a metal-framed mirror or an oversized print. Boring floor? Time for a new rug – or sand back or paint old wooden boards. Something simpler? Adding a sheepskin to an old sofa or chair will give instant uplift, as will a change of bed linen, towels or small accessories such as cushions, storage baskets or vases. How about lights? A sassy lampshade can alter the look of an entire room, while filament bulbs will give your lighting a hot vibe. What about a cool coat hook, new door knobs, some kitchen canisters or a bathroom soap dispenser? The smallest things can make a big difference. The high-street chains are brilliant at tapping into new trends with affordable products, so get browsing!

What other trends should I be keeping an eye on? While a striking monochrome palette of black, white and grey will be big in 2016, opulent metallic accents are also catching on, and work well with modern and traditional decors. The look can be either industrial or retro-glam – as per Bemz’s ‘Deco Glam’ look, described as ‘cosy glamour with a Seventies twist’. ‘Create a more glamorous Seventies style in our homes: think Charlie’s Angels, Studio 54, and Bianca Jagger,’ says Lesley Pennington, CEO of Bemz. She recommends mixing plain fabrics in rose, steel, mineral blue and straw with geometric accents, plus dark wood, shiny brass, fluffy cushions, small tables and statement floor lamps. Alternatively, the Scandi look is all natural, textural, tonal and pared-back, including sheepskin, leather, wood and felt. For more colour, go for a folk-inspired style with brighter tones of red, orange and teal, combined with intricate florals, handicraft and woodlandinspired images. Lastly, Graham & Brown have predicted four trends based around the catwalks at London Fashion Week: meadow prints, statement reds, intricate lace detailing and a throwback to the Eighties. You have been warned…

Ikea predicts a trend for personalisation, whether it’s using stains, stencils or freehand painting.

BAKING

Fruit & Nut Granola Bars

If you’re worried about additives or extra sweeteners in shop-bought granola bars then why not try making your own? Packed with crunchy nuts and seeds and sweetened only with brown sugar and honey, these home-made oaty bars are perfect for a snack or as an after-school treat. Makes: 8 bars or 16 squares Ready in: 50 minutes, plus cooling 140g porridge oats 50g unsalted blanched peanuts 25g pecans, roughly chopped 25g pumpkin seeds 20g sunflower seeds 100g butter, plus extra for greasing 80g light soft brown sugar 3 tbsp runny honey 75g sweetened dried cranberries or jumbo raisins

1.Preheat the oven to 160°C/Fan 140°C/Gas 3. Grease an 18cm square shallow cake tin and line the base and sides with baking parchment. 2.Spread the oats, nuts and seeds on a large baking tray and place in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes until just lightly toasted, stirring once with a wooden spatula. 3.Place the butter, sugar and honey in a large saucepan and heat gently until the butter has melted. Tip the warm oat mixture into the pan and mix thoroughly, then stir in the cranberries or raisins and nearly all the sesame seeds. 4.Turn the mixture into the prepared tin and level with the back of a spoon, pressing down firmly. Scatter over the rest of the sesame seeds. 5.Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until just pale golden around the edges. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then use the tip of a knife to mark into 8 bars. Leave in the tin until cold then lift out, using the lining paper to help you. Peel away the paper and cut through the marks to make 8 bars.

2 tbsp sesame seeds tip You can vary the nuts and fruit you add to these wholesome bars. Try different nuts, such as walnuts or hazelnuts and replace half the cranberries with goji berries or chopped dried apricots or dates. 40
