The Age of NOW! My daughter is 22 years old but when she was about three she asked for juice. Picking her up on her manners I said, “Juice, what?” She brazenly replied, “Juice… NOW!” Although it’s still a family joke, these days we do live in an “instant” world where information is at our fingertips and we’ve lost the skill of patience. Many of our advertisers are small businesses, often without receptionist or anyone to take calls while they are working or with customers. It’s a juggle for them to answer calls on the go and if they do, background noise and access to a working pen makes them look unprofessional. And on hearing an answering machine, many will simply put the phone down and dial another rather than leave a message and wait for a call back. This local magazine is only made financially possible by the investment from our advertisers and we want to help them and you, our readers, to get the most from Discover. “At Your Service” is a telephone answering service readers can use to contact any of our many advertisers; all with one call. Details are on page 11 so please feel free to give it a try. And if you don’t see a business advertising in these pages but trust the team at Discover enough to let us suggest a local business, just ask.

Fareham MP takes part in Titchfield Theatre Production Fareham MP Suella Fernandez is a great supporter of Titchfield Festival Theatre and frequently attends plays at both their theatres, at St Margaret’s Lane and at the Great Barn in Mill Lane during the summer Shakespeare Festival.

A new mezzanine is also planned, as well as a complete new frontage for the building.

This Spring however, she did more than that she took a cameo role herself in the play ‘Ask Me Another’, sequel to ‘The Pub Quiz’, once again written and directed by the Company’s own Steve Harris. The auditorium open to the sky before the new roof went on

The new roof being installed.

Suella pictured on stage with the cast of ‘Ask Me Another’. She said it was ‘Great fun meeting the cast and crew of the Titchfield Festival Theatre and taking part ‘ This was the last play at the theatre before the new roof was installed as part of the ongoing building work and improvement. The new roof is now in place, and new sound proof walls will be erected around the stage area. Previously a new biomass boiler was installed making the theatre the only fully sustainable green theatre in the South of England. 10

New Roof in place on the theatre in a view not often seen. So as the building work and improvements continue, the programme of events at the theatre goes on without stopping. Tickets available at the Box Office 01329 556156

Comfort, Heat Protection, Security and Style: Why you should use glass film Conservatories People spend thousands of pounds on a new conservatory, only to find that it gets too hot and uncomfortable to use during the summer months. But there is a solution: solar control film reduces the direct heat and glare from the sun by up to 80%. At 30% cheaper than roof blinds – and considerably easier to keep clean window film is a more efficient and cost effective solution. Solar film is suitable for both glass and polycarbonate roofs. Sun Damage If there’s any room in your home that the sun shines into, you will find the ultra violet light can cause significant damage to floors and fabrics. You don’t want to have to shut the curtains during the day so using a window film will reduce fading due to heat and natural light. Various levels of tint are available.

“I didn’t think going private was affordable until I found Spire Self-pay” Margaret Gallagher, previous Spire Self-pay patient

Safety and security For extra safety and security, specialist films can strengthen your glass and hold it together in case of impact, bringing older glass up to European standards. Film protected glass also gives extra security from intruders. Privacy If privacy is an issue, then then it’s worth considering silver reflective film that gives a ‘one way effect’ or frosted film. Plenty of light whilst maintaining your modesty! Or for a more elegant solution, you could choose a decorative window film adding colour, vibrancy and privacy to your room. A modern alternative to net curtains. Oakmount Installations supply and fit for all these applications, with 15 years of experience. Call now for a quote or more information: 02380 845777 or visit www.oakmount-installations.co.uk

If you do not have private medical insurance or you are not covered for the treatment you need, you can still benefit from private healthcare at Spire Southampton Hospital. Private healthcare is more accessible than you expect with our fixed prices and payment schemes. By knowing there’ll never be any unexpected extras you can choose Spire Self-pay with confidence. Please see our website for further information and prices, or call to arrange an appointment. Spire Self-pay makes having private treatment easier and more affordable than ever.

INTERVIEW

Rick Astley After rising to fame in the eighties, Rick Astley is back on tour for 2016, with a soulful new album and single ‘Keep Singing’. He talked to the Evening Breeze’s Lucy Ambache about being a poster pin-up and how he appreciates the showbiz experience more secondtime-around. Lovely to meet you in person and not on my wall You’re putting me under pressure now! I had your lyrics up there. All the Smash Hits stuff Now you’re frightening me! No – Smash Hits was an honour! If you got on a centre-spread, my word, you’d cracked it. Back in the eighties, it was like ‘bam!’, there you were at twenty one with a massive hit with ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’. That must have been quite overwhelming? I think it was. I was signed to Stock Aitken & Waterman and they just seemed to knock hit after hit out. I think there was something about that song – I think it was the best song they ever wrote and I had a really good feeling about the tune itself, never mind me being involved or not. 14

Did you change? You do change a bit, because you change a bit anyway – that’s life. But I think it accelerated a lot of things. In lots of ways I didn’t really grow up. Is that why you retired early? Was it too unreal? I think it was just a bit mad really and four or five years of chasing around. I think at the end of it I’d had enough really. Rightly or wrongly, I said to myself “you either do it or you don’t”. You can’t say to a record label “I want six months off and put my career on hold”. In pop, anyway. So you’re back with new music. You’ve got a new single called ‘Keep Singing’.

album, but these days it seems that people release an album so they can go on tour because that’s where the money is. I didn’t really think that through! All I wanted to do was a little tour and the album is out in June. When do you do the big hits in the live shows? What’s your set list? I haven’t even got a set list yet! It’s very difficult because I know people want to catch a bus as well and I don’t want them waiting for ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ if they‘re trying to get the last bus home! Thank you Rick, and lovely to meet you! Have you still got my poster by the way?

Rick: Yeah I’ve enjoyed singing my old songs and value it more than I did when I had hits with them because they are some people’s memories – and as I’ve got older, I’ve learnt to appreciate what that means. Having said that, it’s nice to sing something different. My band and I sometimes learn covers to shake things up a bit and at the beginning of last year, I decided to make a record. I just locked myself in a room and this is what I’ve come up with basically.

Um

Are you putting together an album then? Are you going on tour?

Lucy Ambache presents the Evening Breeze, Sunday to Thursday 7-10pm. To hear a selection of her interviews, go to www.thebreeze.com.

Kind of yeah. It used to be that you would tour to support your

You’ve binned it haven’t you! Did you keep Bros’?! It might have gone into the recycling. That’s alright. I’ll send you one.

Flash! Bang! Wallop! Southampton Operatic Society is making its debut at The Berry Theatre this summer with the family favourite musical, Half a Sixpence. The Society has had several theatrical homes over its 90+ year history and can’t wait to rock the rafters at The Berry. For those who are not familiar with the show, Half a Sixpence was written in the 1960s to promote the talents of Tommy Steele, the British pop star who played the lead character of Arthur Kipps in the West End production (1963), on Broadway (1965) and on film (1967). In the story, young Arthur is taken from his orphanage home to train as an apprentice shop keeper. He leaves his childhood sweetheart Ann half a sixpence to remember him by, keeping the other half with him. Ann grows up and follows Artie to Folkestone, where she plans to work as a maid and ‘be his girl’. But fate has other things in store, as Artie suddenly inherits fortune and discovers that life is very different when you have more than a few sixpences in your pocket!

On Saturday 25th June, the Meon Valley will once again come alive with the return of Meonfest. Set in the beautiful grounds of the Bereleigh Estate, it is an amazing day with fantastic music and plenty of entertainment for all the family. Last year the very talented and awesome Frank Turner came straight from Glastonbury to perform to the Meonfest crowds. Bereleigh Park provides a natural amphitheatre for the main dome stage and acoustic tent of Meonfest. It is a magical setting where families and friends can look down on the stage set against unrivalled views of the Meon Valley. There is plenty of entertainment for children with a selection of activities and camping is available nearby.

All profits raised from Meonfest 2016 will go towards the much needed hall extension for the local East Meon Primary School. For tickers and information please visit www.meonfest.org.uk or www.facebook.com/meonfest.

GARDENING

The Grass Can Be Greener

Your garden should now be starting to look lush and green, with beds and borders beginning to come into their own. But if your lawn spoils it all, or you want to install one, now is the perfect time to get started.

Preparing the site Remove all weeds, large stones, debris and any old grass, then dig or fork over thoroughly to remove all taproots of weeds. Kill off an old lawn or a weed infested site with weedkiller based on glyphosate, then strip it off or dig it in once it all dies off. Incorporate organic matter to improve moisture retention on sandy soils; on heavy soils dig in grit and organic matter for drainage. Next, firm the whole area by treading it over evenly in flat-soled boots, then rake thoroughly and remove stones or other debris from the surface, treading gently down again if necessary.

Buying turf Buy turf from a reputable supplier which is suitable for your requirements – some, especially those including lots of dwarf ryegrass, are much tougher, while some contain a seed mixture for use in shade. A ‘bowling green’ effect may look superb but will need more maintenance and be less hardwearing. Avoid cheaper turf as it can contain weeds, pests or diseases, or is simply not a good grass mixture. Arrange delivery of turf when you need it and never store for more than two days. It can remain rolled up for up to 24 hours, but for any longer unroll immediately, lay out flat on paving or plastic sheeting and water regularly. Laying the turf Lay turves closely together and do not allow the edges to overlap. For an even finish, joins on each row

22

should be staggered, like bricks in a wall. Lay the first row of turf using the adjacent path or lawn edging to form a straight line to work to. Roll out each turf carefully so that the edge abuts onto its neighbour.

If you need a small section of turf to complete a row, add this in the middle of a row rather than at the end so it is less likely to be dislodged or dry out. For a curved edge lay the turves so that they overlap the new lawn edge and cut to shape.

Lay the next row, again ensuring that the long edges of each abut onto the long edges of the last row. To avoid damage, kneel on a plank placed over the previous row and continue until your new lawn is in position.

When finished, gently tamp the area over using the back of a rake and if any turves sink place some extra soil underneath until they are level. Finally, brush in a mixture of horticultural sand and finely sieved soil over the surface,

ensuring that gaps between the turves are filled in. Care and maintenance Gently water the new lawn using a sprinkler, ensuring that the water penetrates right down to the root level. Water regularly in dry weather, particularly for the first couple of months whilst the roots establish and avoid walking on it during this time. You will soon have a gorgeous lawn to be proud of.

Father’s Day fun with the National Trust in Hampshire Winchester City Mil Father’s Day themed baking demonstrations This bustling working watermill is filled with the delicious smell of baking on Father’s Day. Enjoy baking demonstrations that use of the mill’s own stoneground flour to make seasonal treats that are perfect for dads. You can taste the results too, and take home free recipe cards. Explore beneath the mill to experience the full force of the River Itchen as it roars through; don’t forget to view the latest CCTV footage of the mill’s resident otters! On 19 June the Mill’s shop is selling special Father’s Day hampers, filled with goodies including locally sourced food and drink. Seasonal baking demonstration: 11am – 3pm. Mill open 10am – 5pm.

Mottisfont This is the perfect place for dads to demonstrate their skills at some of the Trust’s famous ’50 things to do before you’re 11¾’ challenges. Mottisfont is set on the sparkling River Test, so they can challenge their families to Pooh Stick races, or try out the Wild Play trail and test everyone’s limits in the boggy climbing area. Then it’s into the woods to master those den-building skills, before collapsing on the lawn for a picnic.

Fancy getting up close to some of the biggest names in 20th-century art? Mottisfont’s latest exhibition, the Schlee Collection, features a substantial selection of drawings and sketches from some of Britain’s most famous artists, including Henry Moore, David Hockney and Paul Nash. This major private collection, from Southampton City Art Gallery has rarely been exhibited. Hinton Ampner Acres of estate means hours of fun for visiting families. Dads can lead the way through beautiful beech woodland along winding paths, where there are plenty of materials to make secret hideaways. This is a great opportunity to try some other ’50 things’ tasks, such as hunting for wildlife tracks, and searching for bugs – peer into and under fallen branches to see all sorts of minibeasts.

Then relax on the lawn overlooking the South Downs to make squeaky grass ‘trumpets’ and daisy chains. Hinton’s tea room is renowned for its homemade treats, which often include produce from the kitchen garden, so why not treat dads to one of the latest cake recipes? There’s a good range of local beers and ales too, from Flack Manor Bowmans and Tuts Clump. HOME INTERIORS

Spruce Up Your Home Office A good desk is essential. The new Phineas desk is made from oak and has two cubby holes, drawers, and a cut-out for cables. It costs £545 from Loaf, tel 0845 468 0698; www.loaf.com.

Dodgy desk, awkward chair or overflowing shelves? It’s time to give your home office a facelift, says Katherine Sorrell.

Whether your working space is a corner of the kitchen used for catching up with email, or a high-spec office with everything necessary for fulltime self-employment, it needs to work for you. A few small improvements can make your workspace more comfortable, functional and attractive.

Copper storage baskets to bring some glamour. These cost £35, from MiaFleur, tel 0116 2986393; www.miafleur.com. 34

Start with a clear out and a tidy up: go through your old paperwork, stationery, books etc. and give it away, recycle it, file it well out of the way or bin it, as appropriate, and you’re bound to create extra space. Then, sort out messy cabling with extension leads, cable

clips or by adding an extra double plug socket. Next: your desk. If you are still running out of room, you could consider adding a small worktop to one side of your existing desk, or improve your organisation with a new desk that incorporates drawers, cubby holes, shelves or whatever other type of storage you need. If you can, use nearby walls to lift as much as possible off the surface of your desk by introducing wall-mounted storage such as shelves, pin boards, peg boards or hanging racks. Anything that stacks is useful, too. Before you know it, you’ll be able to see your laptop again. A lack of storage probably goes for home offices more than any other space in the house. You may be happy with buying a conventional filing cabinet and/or bookcase, but don’t be afraid to look beyond the usual office suppliers: vintage and

industrial pieces can add an element of unexpected style to brighten up your work time. Add boxes, baskets, trolleys, racks and desktop accessories in colours and textures that suit your space and personal style. If boring looks are the problem, then why not give everything a facelift with the paintbrush? Neutrals are undeniably good for concentration, but go for bold colours if they make you happy. Blackboard paint comes in a range of colours and is a great option for sections of walls, desk tops or cupboard fronts where you might want to chalk up some notes. And, how about adding pretty curtains or blinds, an eye-catching rug, a display of collectibles or a

Personalise your workspace (and provide a handy magnetic storage wall, too) with this Cockatiel printed magnetic wallpaper, £64.50, Sisters Guild; www.sistersguild.co.uk.

A comfortable chair is a must and an adjustable office chair on castors is best. If yours is dull or ugly, either re-upholster it, make a loose cover or, at worst, hang a length of fabric over the back and add an attractive cushion. Another essential is a good desk light – choose one that is bright, adjustable and that you love the look of. There’s an enormous choice, at prices to suit every budget. For the final details, add accessories to brighten up your life, from a good-looking waste bin to a house plant, some colourful wall art or a scented candle. Let’s face it, the more you enjoy being at work, the more productive you’ll be.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company

policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Locks Heath

area and manager Justin Friel agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

Broken Or Damaged Windows? Faulty Locks, Handles, Hinges? 37

TECHNOLOGY

Phone Home Philips Hue smart bulbs

Are you ready to control everything in your house with a smartphone app? In the 1930s, magazines predicted a really exciting thing called the smart home - a home where everything was automated and easy to control. It’s taken its time to turn up, but smart home technology is finally here. From your boiler to your light bulbs, there’s an app for almost everything. Most smart home technology is designed to connect to your Wi-Fi network, either directly or via a little box called a hub. Once it’s connected you can then control it from your phone. There are smart thermostats, such as Google’s Nest and British Gas’s Hive, that can

38

automate your heating and even turn the heater up and down when you’re away from home. There are smart bulbs, such as Philips’ Hue, that can completely change the colour of your room with a single tap of your phone’s screen. There are smart baby monitors such as BabyPing that stream video of your (hopefully!) sleeping child to your phone, and there is a whole selection of smart cameras that you can use to monitor your house. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Both Apple and Google have bet on home automation as one of the next big things, so they’re encouraging firms to make even more smart devices although inevitably, Apple and Google’s systems aren’t compatible with one another so you need to pick sides.

British Gas Hive smart thermostat

That’ll change in the longer term, because it’s in nobody’s interest to have rival, incompatible systems for such basics as light switches and heating controls, but at the moment it’s really important to check compatibility - so for example if you want to control smart home technology via an Apple iPhone or Apple Watch, you should look for devices that support Apple’s HomeKit. If you don’t, you could end up in a situation where you need a different app for each smart home product you buy, which is hardly making things simple. If you’re wondering what’s so smart about smart home technology, the answer is that by connecting different things together you can make interesting things happen. For example, Philips’ Hue bulbs work with Apple’s Siri voice recognition, so you can say “Hey Siri! Set scene to movie!” and the lights will change. Nest learns your habits to work out the best times and temperatures for heating your home, and can

- from your Sky box to any other room in the house, or to your phone or tablet when you’re far from home. There’s a catch, of course. Because this is all brand new technology, it’s quite expensive - so if you fancy a Bluetooth-enabled DeLonghi coffee machine that you can command from the sofa, it’ll cost £1,500. Even relatively simple devices can be expensive, so for example

smart plugs for remotely turning things on and off cost around £40, while a starter kit of three Philips Hue bulbs and a hub will set you back £149. Upgrading from Sky+HD to Sky Q costs from £99 to £249 and then comes in at £56 per month. As ever, being first on the block with new technology doesn’t come cheap - so maybe the really smart homes will wait until the technology gets cheaper before taking the plunge.

BEAUTY

Gently Does It By Kate Duggan: www.kateduggan.co.uk

This month we’re talking oils, hair dyes and (ouch) waxing. Summer is just around the corner, so we can no longer hide away under layers of winter woollies…

We beauty writers tend to focus on new launches. We’re a bit like magpies – easily distracted by new shiny things. But this month I thought I’d celebrate an underrated classic – Fenjal. Just a whiff of the bath oil conjures up images of my grandma, who’s used it since I was tiny. I’m reminded of her every time I open my Fenjal Classic Shower Oil, £5.49, but that’s not the only reason I love it. Packed with natural oils, including grapeseed and soy, it leaves my skin feeling really soft and lightly scented. I’m a big fan of botanical oils and use at least one every day. On my ‘to-buy’ list is andiroba oil. And it’s not just me; according to Lorraine Dallmeier of Formula Botanica, this golden Central American oil has ‘attracted great interest from the cosmetic industry in recent years for its potential anti-inflammatory properties.’ She explains, ‘This oil will nourish your dry and sensitive skin and as an added bonus, it will also repel insects, which makes it an ideal choice for packing when you go on your summer holiday!’ Fancy

42

learning more about natural oils? Formula Botanica has a wide range of online courses, teaching students how to select and blend natural skincare ingredients. Light coloured hair can easily look dull and lifeless, so my go-to hair shampoo this month is the PRO:VOKE Touch Of Silver Brightening Shampoo. I start by prepping with the Pre-Toning Primer, which adds shine and smooths cuticles. The shampoo’s violet pigment then helps to neutralise brassiness and protect my colour. Finally, the intensive conditioner undoes some of the damage caused by my highlighting habit. Plus, as the range starts at just £3.19 in Boots, it doesn’t break the bank.

of the simplest ways to ensure hair-free legs for longer. The wax is easy to melt in the microwave, and the fabric strips are strong enough to reuse a few times. (Tip: dust a fine layer of baby powder over your skin before waxing, as it helps to make the wax easier to remove.)

As mentioned, my hair is feeling a little hard-done-by at the moment, so I’m giving it a rest from bleaching. Instead, I’m using Naturtint, £10.99, to refresh the colour and cover the grey. Probably the gentlest home-colour on the market, Naturtint doesn’t contain any ammonia, parabens, SLS, mineral oils, paraffin, or silicones, so it doesn’t damage my hair. It’s also enriched with

plant and seed oils, so leaves my locks really shiny. I’ve hauled my summer clothes out of the loft, and my thick tights have been banished to the back of the drawer for another few months. Unfortunately, that means there’s no escaping the need to regularly de-fuzz. If you’re brave enough to wax, Parissa Warm Wax, £12.99, is one

BAKING

Chocolate Chip & Nut Biscotti

These crisp Italian biscuits are baked twice to give them that extra crunch. Serve them with strong coffee or a sweet dessert wine for dipping. Makes approx 20 biscuits Ready in 50 minutes 50g butter, softened 100g caster sugar 1 medium egg, beaten 2 tsp orange zest 175g plain flour, plus extra for shaping 1/2 tsp baking powder 40g blanched hazelnuts, roughly chopped 40g dark chocolate chips

1. Preheat the oven to 180C, 350F, Gas 4. Line a large baking sheet with baking parchment. 2. Put the butter and sugar in a bowl and beat together with a wooden spoon until very pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the egg and orange zest. 3. Sift over the flour and baking powder and add the hazelnuts and chocolate chips. Knead on a lightly floured surface to a soft dough, adding a little more flour if the dough seems sticky. 4. Divide the dough into two pieces and using lightly floured hands shape each to a 18cm x 8cm log. Place on the baking sheet, well spaced apart, and flatten each one slightly with the palm of your hands. 5. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until firm and light golden. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and leave to cool for about 10 minutes. 6. Carefully transfer the two logs to a chopping board. Use a serrated knife to cut each log on the diagonal into 9-10 slices. Return all the slices, cut-side down, to the baking sheet and bake for a further 10-15 minutes until crisp and golden brown. 7. Transfer the biscotti to a cooling rack and leave to cool completely. They will keep in an airtight container for 2-3 weeks. TIP For a flavour variation, replace the nuts and chocolate chips with sweetened dried cranberries and mixed peel.
