NEW BARCHESTER CARE HOME IN FAREHAM LOOKS FORWARD TO WELCOMING FIRST RESIDENTS The Fernes Care Home in Fareham is set to open in July and serve the local community. The stunning purpose-built home, which has spectacular views over the Meon Valley, offers quality nursing care services and dedicated dementia care to people from surrounding areas. Barchester is committed to providing the best possible care environments and promotes dignity and choice by tailoring surroundings to accommodate people requiring different care services. The Fernes has been designed to a high standard with luxury fittings and furnishings throughout and ample dining and lounge space for everyone to enjoy. At The Fernes, as in many Barchester homes, dementia services are offered in a unique care environment called a Memory Lane Community. The purposeful design encourages people living with dementia to lead a full and active life,

staying as independent as possible. The living space encourages residents to interact with their surroundings, for example facilities such as lifeskills kitchens allow those individuals living with dementia to continue to experience the familiarity of everyday household tasks like setting the table for dinner, washing up or baking. The home’s dedicated care staff are trained to recognise the importance of the lives and individual experiences of all residents and make it a priority to know the life histories of the people in their care. “Providing comfort and a homely environment in first-class care settings is something we are proud of ”, says Catherine Bezer, General Manager at The Fernes Care Home. “The first individuals are looking forward to moving in and we look forward to providing person-centred care for many more people who will join us throughout the year. “The best way to find out about the care we provide is to come and visit us and get a good feel about what The Fernes is all about and how we tailor care to meet your needs or those of a relative or friend. Remember, our doors are always open for anyone wanting a tour and we’ll always do our best to accommodate requests.”

If you would like to take the opportunity to see The Fernes first-hand, please make an appointment to come and visit us, so we can demonstrate the warmth of our welcome. You can contact us on 01329 655826 or for further information about Barchester Healthcare, please visit: www.barchester.com 10

THE VALUE OF VACCINATION The moment we bring home a puppy or kitten we immediately commit ourselves to a lifetime of care. We have a responsibility to that puppy or kitten to protect it from pain, suffering, injury and disease. Most pet owners have heard of distemper and cat influenza; the former usually causing death, the latter commonly leaving long term health complications. One of the most important areas of preventative health care is the immunisation against viral and bacterial infections and today with modern vaccines we have greater opportunities than ever to ensure our furry friends lead long and healthy lives.

Heathside Vets uses a cutting edge vaccine called Versican (DHPPi/L4) where puppies start their vaccinations at six weeks old with a follow up vaccine 3-4 weeks later and a full booster at 12 months old. A full vaccination needn’t be administered for three years (this covers for distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis) however leptospirosis and para influenza are still required annually. Kittens are vaccinated from nine weeks of age with a booster 3-4 weeks later afterwhich revaccination is required annually. Heathside uses Fevaxyn Pentofel that immunises against the five major diseases in the cat. Visiting a vet early in the life of your pet gives your vet the chance to give it a thorough medical check and advise on vaccination and parasite control (fleas and worms). SUMMER LOVIN’ It’s been a very long time coming, but summer is finally here. I’ve dusted off the sunnies and dug out my sandals, but couldn’t resist investing in a few new goodies…

By Kate Duggan

NEAL’S YARD’S ORGANIC LIP GLOSS A new lip gloss is always on my summer shopping list. This year I’ve gone for Neal’s Yard’s organic Lip Gloss in Fig, £9.50. It’s rich in seed and fruit oils, so nourishes lips while giving them a decent burst of colour. It’s easy to apply and also has a subtle orange flavour and scent. Being a gloss, the colour doesn’t last that long, but it does leave my lips feeling moisturised. MARKS AND SPENCER’S AUTOGRAPH FACE PALETTE Next on my list is a new makeup palette. I like one that I can keep in my bag then whip out when there’s talk of cocktails. Marks and Spencer’s Autograph Face Palette ticks all the boxes. There are nine eyeshadows, two blushers and four highlighters, so it can take my look from day to night with ease. What’s more, it’s housed in a cute metallic clutch bag, which you can detach from the palette and use on its own. A bargain at just £15.

PAUL MITCHELL’S SUPER STRONG SYSTEM Now I am not normally a fan of nettles. I seem to be forever getting stung by them when retrieving a football out of the long grass or trailing after my dog through the woods. But they do have some good qualities. Nettles are packed with amino acids and proteins, so can help to strengthen your hair. You can make an effective hair rinse by steeping leaves in hot water, but if that sounds like a bit too much effort, try Paul Mitchell’s Super Strong System. This three-step hair care range uses nettles and other botanical ingredients to strengthen hair, add shine and prevent sun damage. I’ve been using it for a few weeks now and am suitably impressed.

BELIEVA’S NATURAL INTENSIV BODY LOTION I am incredibly lazy when it comes to body lotion, so don’t tend to use it as much as I should when I’m covered up in the winter. So once summer hits, my legs are a bit of a sorry sight. I’ve been tackling them with daily exfoliation, followed by Believa’s Natural Intensiv Body Lotion, £23.99. It’s packed with argan oil, aloe vera, jojoba and shea butter, so is incredibly moisturising. Thankfully it’s also easily absorbed, as I’m usually running late for the school run. Natural Intensiv is very gentle, so is suitable for allergy sufferers, and may help with eczema and other dry skin complaints.

ATKINSONS OUD SAVE THE QUEEN British fragrance house Atkinsons is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. To celebrate, and mark the Queen’s 90th birthday year, it has launched a new perfume, Oud Save the Queen. Inspired by the Orient, this fragrance is bursting with spicy, exotic notes, including bergamot, jasmine, orange blossom and, of course, oud. However, there are also notes of the quintessentially British Earl Grey tea. This fragrance is on my wish list, rather than shopping list, unfortunately, as it’s an eye watering £150.

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE With summer well under way, gardens will need more water than the rain is giving them, but how can you minimise the amount you apply, make best use of what you’ve got and still have a goodlooking and productive garden?

TIME YOUR PLANTING If possible, wait until the autumn to plant out trees, shrubs and climbers – it will be far harder for them to establish properly now and they are more likely to suffer serious setbacks. However, if you can’t avoid planting, improve the soil texture by digging and forking in plenty of garden compost, well-rotted manure or other bulky organic matter so that the soil is better equipped to retain moisture – sandy soil will then hold water more Water Butt with Downpipe Diverter

By Pippa Greenwood

effectively whilst clay soil is less likely to crack. It may be hard work but it will make life a lot easier for the plants, and means you will spend far less time watering later on. APPLY A GOOD LAYER OF MULCH It is still well worthwhile mulching beds, borders and your vegetable plot. The mulch needs to be 2” - 3” (5 - 7.5 cm) deep and you can use shredded composted bark, composted chipped bark, cocoa shells or many of the numerous pebbles, shingles and so forth which are now available. If the soil is well watered before the mulch goes on, then it will really help to keep moisture in the soil and, as all the materials I’ve suggested will let plenty of rain through, when it does rain the plants will still benefit. Mulching will also help to keep down weeds. CHOOSE DROUGHT TOLERANT PLANTS FOR DRIEST AREAS In drier areas of your garden, try to use drought tolerant plants. Those with silvery or grey foliage such as the lavenders, Sedums (ice plants), rock roses (Helianthemum), rosemary and Convolvulus cneorum all tend to thrive in dry conditions, and are also more likely to do quite well if planted now. SOAP, BUBBLES & WASHING UP LIQUID … HONESTLY! Make the most of any rainfall by fitting a water diverter to the drain pipe which takes water from the guttering from your greenhouse, house, conservatory or garage, and divert the rain straight into one or more water butts. You can also fit a water diverter to the downpipe which takes water from your bath, hand basin or kitchen sink. Normal amounts of shampoo, bubble bath and washing up liquid should pose no threats to plants, and these detergents may help with pest problems such as greenfly.

30

AT THE END OF THE DAY… Unless there’s no alternative, always water in the evening or extremely early in the morning, which drastically reduces the amount of water lost through evaporation, and means that there is far less chance of foliage or flowers getting scorched - as can happen if they are wetted in bright sunlight. BE GENTLE Where possible use a watering can or hose with a gentle nozzle attachment and water only the areas where the water is needed. If the soil is very dry before you start to water, then sprinkle the surface gently with a light drizzling of water and return a few minutes later you will find that the water penetrates down to the roots much more effectively. Excessive watering on a very dry surface is likely to lead to a lot of run off and wastage.

ABC Mark Franklin interviews Martin Frey

34 years after ABC’s the Lexicon Of Love was released, frontman Martin Fry is back with the sequel, Lexicon Of Love II. The Breeze’s Mark Franklin caught up with him. I love the story about why you decided to make this album and I’d like you to tell it if you wouldn’t mind? The Lexicon Of Love was our debut album with ‘The Look Of Love’ and ‘Poison Arrow’ on it and ABC has made many albums over the years. I was playing a show at the Albert Hall in London with Anne Dudley conducting the orchestra and we were doing orchestral versions of The Lexicon Of Love. It was such a magical night – I was looking into the audience and did start to think ‘wouldn’t it be good to do a followup’. Then I started thinking how I love sequels. I had a couple of songs that I’d written which we slipped into the set the next time we played, and they went down a storm. I kind of thought, The Lexicon Of Love II would be unapologetically ABC and I could make it very big, orchestral and lavish without any guilt whatsoever. It’s a record about today but one that doffs its cap to the old days. Were you consciously trying to sonically have it almost compare to the original – or were you trying to move it away? Sonically, I didn’t want to go back to the minutiae of a Yamaha DX-7 keyboard from 1983 and try to recreate that but I did want to reference the original album and take it forwards. The editing and sampling are things you can do on a laptop today and I figured it would be great to get a real orchestra, and a real drum kit, and a real bass guitar and cut them all up – today I think that is what most people do. Although not everybody 34

has real strings so as a sort of pre-condition, I felt it had to be more orchestral. The first single is Viva Love. It’s a massive powerhouse of a song. Just tell me about that. With Viva Love, I wanted to capture the feeling you get when you get up in the morning and feel that life is full of possibilities – that is often the feeling you get when you’re in love – but I wanted to capture some of the euphoria and the ecstasy. It would be remiss of me not to look at your back catalogue. For example, ‘Be Near Me’ - love that song! Yeah it’s our biggest seller and it’s a song we rarely play in the UK. But in America, it’s the encore song. It came out of an album called ‘How To Be A Zillionaire’ and at that point in our career, we decided to become cartoon characters. We decided to be like Hanna Barbera! It’s a very romantic song but in an electronic setting. Mark: Poison Arrow? It’s a pretty spiteful song, really! “Who broke my heart, you did, you did” - I can’t really count the number of times I’ve pointed deep into the heart of the audience on that moment but now they all point back at me! It’s pretty heartful and anguished, but love is a many splintered thing!

DISCOVER SHORT STORY

THE TOO HOT TUB

“What are you doing here?” Tony asked. “Come to check up on me?” Richard had anticipated some chaos when he popped round to visit his dad, but hadn’t expected to find him on the patio stood up to his armpits in a wheelie bin full of water.

an empty pickled onion jar was rolling around. “These things go for megabucks.” “Why’s it bubbling like that?” Richard asked, studying the dark water more closely. “I borrowed the pump out of the fish tank,” Tony said. “Can’t have a hot tub without bubbles.” “Don’t the goldfish mind?” queried Richard. “They’ll be alright for a bit,” Tony said. “And how are you heating the water?” Richard asked. “You what?” Tony said. “It’s a hot tub, so how are you making it hot?” “No, it doesn’t want to be hot,” Tony scratched his ear with the pickled onion fork, “it’s for when you’re too hot, you know, to cool you down a bit.”

“No,” Richard lied. “Mum asked me to pop round to see if you’ve watered her Busy Lizzies.” Though the sight of the drooping bedding plants had already answered that question for him.

“So you’ve filled the dustbin with cold water, stuck the fish tank pump in there and climbed in,” Richard said as calmly as possible. “Pleasant is it?”

“Do you want me to ask what you’re doing?” Richard asked. ”Or is it better if I don’t know?” “I don’t mind telling you,” Tony said, “so long as you don’t spoil the surprise for your mum.” “The surprise that you’ve filled your dustbin with water and then climbed in it?” Richard asked. “No longer a dustbin, Dickie,” Tony said proudly. “What you have here is a fully functioning hot tub. I wanted to surprise your mum when she got back from her spa weekend.” “She’ll certainly be surprised,” Richard agreed. “She can sit in here of an evening and put her white wine spritzer and pickled onions on the open lid.” Tony tapped the lid behind him where 36

“It’s not bad.” Tony’s teeth rattled slightly. “I could stay in here all day.” “Surely you’d start to prune after a bit?” Richard noticed his dad’s finger tips. “How long have you been in there exactly?” “Not long,” Tony said defensively, “I’ll get out when you’ve gone. Probably could do with a spot of lunch, now that I’ve eaten all the pickled onions.” “Why not get out now?” Richard said, then a horrible thought flashed through his mind. “You’re not naked in there are you?” Continued on page 53

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company

policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Locks Heath

area and manager Justin Friel agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

TRAVELLING ABROAD THIS YEAR? WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO SPEND YOUR MONEY? It used to be a simple choice between traveller’s cheques or cash, but now there’s a variety of cards that offer more convenience and security when spending money abroad. In fact there are so many, it can be a bit of a minefield when trying to choose the right one. TRAVELLER’S CHEQUES Good old-fashioned traveller’s cheques can be useful as a backup. Fee levels and exchange rates vary greatly according to the country you’re in, however, and also between individual banks. Pros Handy if you don’t want to carry large amounts of cash. Can be replaced within 24 hours if they’re lost or stolen.

Cons By Ann Haldon Exchange rates can fluctuate widely, and are generally poor when compared with other payment methods. You pay a fee when you buy them, and also commission when they’re exchanged. PREPAID CARDS Some of the newer prepaid cards offer very competitive exchange rates, as well as extra features such as a smartphone app. A word of warning though - there have been problems accessing money abroad using some prepaid cards, as it’s not always made clear that the first time you use the card, it has to be at a cash point. Pros They’re pre-loaded, so it’s easier to budget and you can lock in a good exchange rate. Convenient and easy to use, but check the rules carefully. Cons If the card is lost or stolen you may be charged for a replacement. Some providers charge high fees. CREDIT CARDS Still one of the most popular ways to spend money abroad, credit cards give you interestfree credit as well as valuable consumer protection. You also have the same fraud protection as in the UK, so if the card is lost or stolen you should be covered. Pros Some protection for goods over £100 via Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. They’re safe and secure, but make sure payment is taken in front of you.

40

Cons There’s a risk of fraud or ‘cloning’ if the card is taken out of sight when you pay. If you withdraw cash you’ll be charged daily interest. DEBIT CARDS You can use a debit card to pay for goods or withdraw cash abroad, but you’ll probably have to pay a non-sterling transaction fee. There’s no daily interest on cash withdrawals, but you might be charged a cash machine transaction fee each time you use one. Pros Easily blocked if the card is lost or stolen. Chip and pin protection. Cons No consumer protection as with credit cards. Charges can quickly add up if you withdraw cash regularly.

CASH Although it’s not a good idea to carry lots of cash with you, you’ll need to pay for some smaller items this way, and organising it before you go will save money. Bear in mind though, that insurance policies only cover around £200 to £500 of cash on average. Pros You can shop around for a good exchange rate before you go. Can be used anywhere. Cons May not be fully covered by your insurance policy. Not as safe as carrying a plastic card. It’s a good idea to take some cash as backup for your plastic card(s) and traveller’s cheques, and buying it well before you leave means you can track down the best rates of exchange.

MINI COUNTRYMAN VS SKODA YETI

By James Baggott

All MINIs have a distinctive and instantly recognisable look to them, and with the Countryman range, it carries this identifiable image into a stockier frame to give you more space and practicality. The stylish bodywork helps to make the Countryman a tantalising option in the CUV sector and with great additions and features to match, it’s difficult to see why you wouldn’t choose it. However, it has competition from Skoda’s Yeti, a CUV similar in size and price and both cars have their good elements. For starters, both models have had recent redesigns to create more space and alter their looks to be more modern and up-to-date. It has to be said that the Countryman certainly looks better than the Yeti, with the distinguishing features of the MINI range, such as the shape, the headlights and front grille, to make it truly stand out on the road. MORE FOR YOUR MONEY WITH THE MINI The size of both models also make them very practical, with the smaller Countryman offering 350 litres of space in the boot with the seats up, whilst the Yeti has only 66 litres more in a car 20cm longer and 10cm taller. This means you can get more 44

for your money space-wise in the Countryman, especially as the range starts off cheaper than the Skoda. ALL THE TRIMMINGS Customisability has also been a recent appeal of the MINI market, and with the Countryman this is no exception. With MINI’s design additions that can be fitted to the whole range, you can personalise your Countryman as much as you wish. Also you can fit satellite navigation, stereo system, leather trim and ‘Run-Flat’ tyres to your model; great

options that can be added to any of the range. Good options aren’t as easy to come by on the Yeti, as the better choices to fit are only available further up the Yeti model range, whilst almost all are compatible with every Countryman model. CONFIDENCE ON AND OFF ROAD To compete with the Yeti’s off-road capabilities in the Yeti Outdoor and more expensive models, MINI offers the ‘All-4’ all-wheel drive system throughout the class. With a higher ride height and great grip on offer, the Countryman All-4 system will give you confidence both on and off road, with only a small premium on top of the two-wheel drive versions. PUTTING YOUR FOOT DOWN The Yeti’s base model is fitted with a 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine producing 110hp, whilst the 1.6-litre in the One produces just 98hp. This doesn’t compromise much in speed with only a marginal difference in acceleration. SO, WHO’S THE WINNER? Overall, with a wider variety of vehicle and equipment options, value for money and great 4x4

Carports & Canopies

system, the MINI Countryman is the better option of the two, and with the great looking bodywork to encase you, why wouldn’t you want to drive it? The MINI Countryman is available from £17,105 for the One Countryman, with the top of the range 218hp John Cooper Works All-4 starting at £28,985. For more information on the Countryman or any other models in the MINI range, contact your nearest dealership. SALMON & BROCCOLI QUICHE A rich and creamy quiche packed full of succulent salmon flakes and broccoli. Serve warm or cold with a crisp green leaf salad.

Serves 6 Ready in: 1 hour 30 minutes, plus chilling and cooling 250g shortcrust pastry 300g salmon fillets 200g small broccoli florets 4 large eggs 250ml double cream 100ml milk Salt and freshly ground black pepper 50g Cheddar cheese, finely grated

1. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20cm loose-based flan tin (it should be at least 4cm deep). Trim off the excess pastry and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. 2. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and baking beans. Place the flan tin on the baking sheet in the oven and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-6 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 190C/170C fan/Gas 5. 3. Meanwhile, place the salmon fillets in a deep frying pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil then simmer gently for 5-6 minutes until just cooked through. Remove with a slotted spoon and leave until cold. Roughly flake the salmon discarding any skin and bones. Steam the broccoli florets for 1-2 minutes until almost tender. 4. Place the flaked salmon and broccoli in the pastry case. Whisk the eggs in large jug then whisk in the double cream and milk. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 5. Gently pour the egg mixture over the filling then scatter over the grated cheese. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown. Serve warm or cold. Tip Replace the salmon with flaked smoked mackerel for a change of flavour and add a handful of fresh chopped dill or parsley to the egg mixture.

DISCOVER SHORT STORY

...continued from page36

“No!” Tony batted the suggestion away. “I’ve got my best undercrackers on.” “So get out then,” Richard said. “Like I said,” Tony looked uncomfortable, “in a bit.” “You can’t get out,” Richard grinned, “can you?” “I did have a try earlier,” Tony said. “I’ll have another go in a bit.” “Do you want some help?” “No, I’m fine.” “You’re stuck aren’t you?” “Well, maybe just a little bit.”

Richard walked around the dustbin assessing the situation. “Hang on, Dad.” He took a firm hold of the back of the bin and tipped. “It’ll be easier if we release some of the water first.” The water sploshed gently over the side, wetting Richard’s feet. “Careful Dickie,” Tony said nervously, “there are quite a few gallons in here.” Just then the sheer weight overwhelmed Richard and the whole bin tipped over. Tony was thrown out onto the patio like the contents of a trawler net. “At least we’ve watered the Busy Lizzies,” Richard said. “You alright?” “Never better.” Tony picked himself up. “Is there time to refill it before your mum gets back?” 53
