Helping Businesses with Small Budgets Small businesses, especially start-ups, often confess to a shoestring budget and can’t afford to advertise; which they desperately need of course. It’s a chicken and egg problem I hear regularly in my role as advertising sales. Small businesses are the lifeblood of our communities so we need to businesses with budgets both big and small.

Inside EDUCATION.......................... 10 Back to School Technology

So, we’ve done something about it; three things in fact.

KIDZONE............................... 13

1. We’ve introduced new advert sizes for smaller budgets 2. A “Carousel” option so you can rotate your advert across all our editions and reach all 144,000 homes of our circulation over one year. 3. BACK TO SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY The best kit to pack for your kids As if buying new clothes, bags and accessories wasn’t expensive enough, the back to school period also means buying gadgets - but which ones will actually benefit your child when they head to school, college or university? The right gadgets really do make a difference, but don’t rush to spend more money than you need to. Some form of computer is essential, especially for students away from home: it’s not just a tool for learning, but for communicating, music, movies and TV too. The key question today is whether a laptop or a tablet is better. Both cost around the same - unless you’re going for an Apple laptop, you can get a very good laptop for less than £400, which is around the same price as an iPad - but it’s important to check whether your child’s school, college or university has specific requirements. For example, some statistical software requires Windows, and while you can make Windows work on a Mac that involves extra expense - and it isn’t an option at all on an iPad. If you’re buying software, look for student versions: programs such as Microsoft Office come in student editions that cost a fraction of the normal price. 10

There’s no doubt that Apple computers are the most desirable computers for students, but they’re also the most expensive ones: Apple’s cheapest laptop, the MacBook Air, starts at £749. A better option may be to buy a secondhand MacBook Pro, as the 2012 model is still current, available online for around £400 and can be upgraded with fast SSD storage for around £50. Alternatively, keep an eye out for “refurb” deals. That’s when brand new laptops have been returned for some reason, checked and put on sale again. They can’t be sold as new anymore so they attract significant discounts. è

The other essential, for older children at least, is a smartphone. If he or she doesn’t already have one, the best buy on the market is the Moto G4. It’s a powerful Android phone with a price tag of just £169, and it’s powerful enough to remain current for several academic years. Once you’ve got the phone you can then shop around for either a pay as you go deal, where you buy credit in advance and top it up as required, or a SIM-only deal, which is a monthly contract giving you a certain amount of data, calls and texts. Reading is a big part of the educational process, of course, and electronic books can save you a great deal of money. Amazon has just updated its Kindle range of ebook readers, and the £59.99 model is arguably the best value Kindle so far. You can spend more on Kindles with all kinds of whizzy features, but we wouldn’t.

One other product you might want to consider is gadget insurance. That isn’t the same as an extended warranty, and it’s important to understand the difference: extended warranties such as Apple’s AppleCare don’t cover accidental damage such as water spills, which can easily do hundreds of pounds worth of damage to a laptop. Your home insurance or current account may already provide such insurance, but it’s worth checking the small print carefully to ensure the kids’ gadgets are covered away from home and that the excesses aren’t excessive. Lots of companies have insurance policies specifically designed for students’ computers and smartphones, and sites such as money.co.uk enable you to compare the cover, cost and excesses quickly.

CONSERVATION OF HISTORIC NETLEY CHAPEL MOVES AHEAD AT ROYAL VICTORIA COUNTRY PARK The transformation of Royal Victoria Country Park is a step closer with conservation work due to begin next month on the Grade II* listed Netley Chapel. The Hampshire County Council-owned country park was once the site of the world’s largest military hospital, with links to Florence Nightingale. It was also a personal project for Queen Victoria who laid its foundation stone. Only the iconic chapel remains after a devastating fire in the 1960s. Plans are now underway to conserve, repair and improve public access to the chapel and uncover the site’s hidden stories, as part of £2.68 million project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Hampshire County Council. Councillor Andrew Gibson, the Authority’s Executive Member for Culture, Recreation and Countryside, said: “The appointment of a contractor for the chapel’s conservation is an important step in this exciting project. It’s part of a wider programme to transform our much-loved country parks, improve visitor facilities and make more of their natural and historical features.

“It’s hard to imagine today, that at Royal Victoria Country Park there once stood a military hospital which cared for up to 1,000 troops at a time, from across the British Empire. It was so large that 30 million red bricks were needed to build the hospital, which had its own gasworks, bakery, reservoir and prison. This project will bring its fascinating history back to life, and improve the visitor experience.” The conservation, repairs and improvement work to the chapel will include the replacement of the original ornate and hand-painted glass windows that have been broken and vandalised. New staircases will also be installed as well as an accessible lift to significantly improve the currently limited public access. Following these works, a new exhibition will be created in the main body of the chapel to tell the story of the former hospital, from its beginnings in the 1850s, through the Boer War, and both World Wars - to its current status as much-loved local country park, including important medical advancements made at the site, such as the discovery of the vaccine for typhoid. New displays highlighting the fascinating history of the site will be located throughout the park, including ones to mark the four corners of the former hospital to show the scale of the once vast building. The programme of work will last 12 months, from July. The Chapel will remain closed until works are complete, but all other parts of the country park remain open as normal.

Eating & Drinking

BON APPÉTIT!

By Cecile

I’m in love. With good food and good wine … or gin, or beer, or … you get my point. My name is Cécile and I run the Hampshire Wine School, with venues in Winchester, Southampton and Poole, sharing my passion in a really fun way with like-minded people. As a French sommelier and wine tutor, my aim in life is to discover the latest trends in beverage, to experiment with food, to find out what makes my tastebuds salivate. I want to know what’s good, what’s great and what’s not worth swallowing (well, I do spit for a living after all). Welcome to my new food & beverage gossip page. It might surprise you (or not, if you’ve been to my tastings) to hear that Hampshire is a-mazing when it comes to sparkling wines. As a Champagne expert, I discovered its vineyards and their incredible potential a few decades ago now, but it would seem that the Champenois are catching up fast. The French Champagne House of Vranken-Pommery has just announced its new and exciting partnership with local sparkling wine producer, Hattingley Valley. Which in turn, celebrated by running in the Hampshire Vineyard Olympics (oh yeah, forget Brazil, it’s all about Hampshire right now) with the likes of Jenkyn Place, Hambledon, Meonhill, Danebury, Cottonworth and Exton Park. Congratulations to Simon Bladon of Jenkyn Place, Bentley, for winning the Olympics Trophy! Hampshire winemakers, we salute you. Gin is more your tipple of choice? Then congratulations to Paul Bowler of Winchester Distillery for winning, yet again, more medals. This time at the Great Taste Awards 2016. His Twisted Nose Gin, oak barrel aged Gin, and Vodka have all won a star. Best place to drink his delicious local creations? At No.5 Bridge Street bar kitchen & rooms, for sure! They have more than 14 gins for you to taste, including 3 local ones. Their ‘Gin of the Week’ is actually my favourite one: Copperhead Gin. 18

The fun part comes in choosing what to add to your very own concoction … Energiticum drops for a little boost of energy, Aperitivum bitters for opening your apetite or Digestivum for a better digestion. Really? Gin as an aid to digest better? Don’t quote me but I’m loving the idea! THE other place for gin in Winchester is the Green Man pub of course, but did you know that you can also take some creative writing classes and drink there at the same time? I cannot promise you becoming Hampshire’s next best-seller but it could be a lot of fun trying (especially under the influence of a gin or three)! So discover the creative writer in you with Chris van Schaick on 22 September at 7.30pm, for only £30 with drinks and nibbles. Too much fun? Need to rest? Then the White Star Tavern in Southampton is in the midst of redecorating its already stunning 13 bedrooms and 1 apartment. No longer content with their 5 AA stars, this welcoming 2 rosette stars bar and restaurant fancied adding a little je-ne-sais-quoi to the décor of their boutique hotel. Talk about greedy ;-) See you next month for some more Hampshirebased food & beverage news. Yours bubbly, Cécile x

PARASITE CONTROL WITHOUT COMPROMISE The lovely weather we have been experiencing has brought on an explosion in the flea population and much of our work at this time of the year is to educate owners on how they can control these parasites. When we commit to owning a companion animal whether it is a dog or cat they come with many obligations. One of these is to ensure that your pet is regularly treated against both internal and external parasites. The damage caused to the physical health of the pet can be life limiting and need not happen. Last month I covered the value of vaccination in preventative health care and using the most up to date vaccines to maximise your pets protection against common cat and dog diseases. Protection against parasites is a natural follow on and I urge you to use the best veterinary strength and grade products to safe guard your pets...regularly! Consistent use of cutting edge treatments will

Pets HOW TO STOP YOUR DOG CHEWING It’s very common for puppies to chew, and it helps them to relieve the pain of teething. They also use their mouths to explore the world and its contents, but when your clothing and shoes become the target you’ll probably feel it’s time to take action. When your puppy is small, nervousness can also cause them to destructively chew anything in sight. Separation anxiety and boredom are common in dogs left alone for a period of time, so what can you do to prevent complete devastation when you return home? • Provide safe, tough items for your dog to focus on. You can buy a range of age-appropriate durable 24

protect your pet from parasites thus minimising harm from them. This doesn’t have to be costly. The Heathside Healthy Pet Club offer pet owners a great way to spread the cost of essential routine veterinary care for your pet without compromise. Heathside offer the best vaccines and the most up to date and effective flea and worm control products (not found on your average veterinary health care plan) at no extra cost. Indeed by becoming a member you will save up to 25% a year on the best products for your routine pet care. There are many other benefits to joining as well, as regular health checks are included in the plan. Rest assured that you will be giving your family dog or cat the best there is. Voted in the top 25 Veterinary Surgeries in Best UK Veterinary Awards 2016 For further info contact Heathside Vets toys and chews from pet stores and other outlets. • Restrict their access to your possessions, or limit them to a couple of rooms in the house. • Make sure they get enough exercise – this is especially important if you’re leaving them for a while, as tiredness will reduce their need to chew. Could it be attention-seeking? All dogs need quality time with their owner, and it’s possible they could be chewing simply to get your attention. If you give them plenty of play time and attention in short bursts, positively reinforcing good behaviour, you should soon see a difference. Consistency is the key to stopping unwanted chewing. Your dog will respond to rewards for chewing its own toys, and also to the negative response, e.g. withdrawing your attention for a while when your shoes are the target.

STUBBINGTON BYPASS FUTURE SECURED Hampshire County Council is set to step in to fill a funding gap of £8.5 million to ensure plans to build a bypass at Stubbington can go ahead. Councillor Roy Perry, Leader of Hampshire County Council, said: “This illustrates the scale of investment Hampshire County Council is making into improving the transport infrastructure in South Hampshire.” Planning permission for the scheme was approved in 2015. The proposed Stubbington Bypass comprises of a 3.5 kilometre road to the south of Fareham and the north-west of Stubbington, designed to alleviate local traffic problems and support long-term plans for regeneration and economic development, including improved access to the Enterprise Zone. It will provide a connection from Titchfield Road to Gosport Road with additional improvements to the existing sections of the B334 at Titchfield Road at its northern end and Gosport Road at the southern end of the alignment.

Gardening

BRILLIANT BULBS It is spring bulb time in all the garden centres now; they should be crammed full of bulbs, many at a reasonable price and all of which promise to provide glorious masses of colour for years to come. By all means plant bulbs in beds and borders, but if you only have a terrace, patio or a back yard, then there are still plenty of bulb planting opportunities to be had! Bulbs have the potential to make any garden look gorgeous, but you can use them to add an element of fun as well as glamour, colour and perfume.

30

Bulbs look fantastic if allowed to naturalise beneath trees, but miniature varieties look By Pippa Greenwood equally good beneath shrubs. Choose miniature daffodils or crocuses and plant them in a scattered effect beneath the shrub, taking care to minimise damage to the shrub’s roots. Keep them well watered in spring and you should have a fantastic display. Ornamental plastic-lined woven baskets, which are available inexpensively from local markets or on the internet, make perfect planting containers provided they are at least 3” (8 cm) deep. Shallower baskets can be used for smaller bulbs such as crocuses - simply fill them with bulb fibre and plant up as you would a bowl of indoor bulbs. To ensure adequate drainage, puncture some holes in the plastic liner and use any normal multi-purpose or loam based compost mixture. Baskets like this look particularly decorative in the spring, and if you add a couple of ferns or ivies to larger baskets they will look even better. è

An outdoor table is unlikely to be used for entertaining in spring, so simply cover it to prevent the surface being spoiled and arrange a selection of pots full of spring bulbs on it – the effect can be really splendid.

a striking display. Plant the container up in two layers, so that one lot of bulbs is a couple of inches deeper than the other, and the deeper ones will flower later than those planted closer to the surface to prolong the display.

An old bucket - particularly an enamelled or galvanized one - makes a fabulous planter, but remember to drill some holes in the base or place a layer of pebbles or grit at least 2” (5cm) deep in the bottom, so that excess water accumulates below the level of the roots and the bulbs do not rot off.

An old bathroom suite or parts of it make wacky and unusual planters. A bath may need a lot of compost to fill it – and don’t forget drainage - but it can act like a full-sized flowerbed. Even a hand basin, lavatory or the cistern can be planted up to great effect.

If your garden or back yard is a good size, then large containers will look particularly handsome. Packed with a single variety of one of the daffodils or tulips or any other spring bulbs, they will make

Old watering cans, wheelbarrows or even a decrepit pair of wellies or boots with a hole in them will also make wonderful planters and will save you a fortune!

Fareham Borough Council could be welcoming the Police into the Civic Offices soon, following a constructive meeting between the two organisations yesterday. Work is underway to get designs drawn up in order for the Police to move into the building. It is expected that the Neighbourhood Policing Team will be relocated to the Civic Offices, along with Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs). They are due to move into the building within the first quarter of 2017. This move will enhance the community hub, which already includes the Wessex Youth Offending Team and the Community Rehabilitation Company, alongside council services.

OCD AWARENESS WEEK

9-15 OCTOBER

While people may joke about being “a bit OCD,” this trivialises a serious and potentially debilitating condition. OCD Awareness Week aims to correct the misconception that Obsessive Compulsive Disorder merely concerns harmless habits or quirks. What Is OCD? 12 in every 1,000 people suffer from OCD, experiencing a range of compulsions, obsessional thoughts and repetitive behaviours that seriously affect their day-to-day life. On average it’s undiagnosed for 10-15 years, yet 50% of cases are severe, meaning symptoms occupy more than three hours a day. Sufferers typically develop OCD in their late adolescence or twenties, but it affects people of all ages, genders and backgrounds. They may recognise their condition, yet find it hard to believe their compulsions won’t relieve their anxiety or prevent harm. 38

Typical OCD four-step cycle Obsession is unwelcome, intrusive thoughts, images or impulses occur repeatedly. Anxiety is caused by the distressing nature of the obsession. A sufferer may develop paranoia or a feeling of over-responsibility, believing that they or their loved ones are in danger from something which, in reality, is harmless - or that their actions can prevent or cause an unrelated, harmful incident. Compulsion is behaviours or thoughts that sufferers are compelled to repeat as a result of the anxiety – often not realistically connected with their obsession or fear Temporary relief is felt briefly when they have ‘completed’ the ‘necessary’ actions.

Types of OCD OCD cases usually fall into four broad categories; checking (repeatedly checking on locked doors for example, contamination (fear of germs), hoarding (unnecessary items or excessive quantities of useful items) and ruminations or intrusive thoughts such as prolonged, time consuming thinking on a harmless topic. What Causes OCD? OCD can run in the families; this may be a genetic link or ‘learned behaviour’. In some sufferers, imaging shows increased activity and blood flow in brain areas that handle emotional response and a lack of seratonin. Suffering neglect, abuse, isolation or trauma such as a break-up or bereavement can be a cause. Certain personality traits, such as perfectionism and a highly methodical approach, can make the development of OCD more likely. While many people may exhibit OCD-type symptoms at times of high stress, the disorder is only clinically diagnosed in people whose symptoms consume over an hour a day, cause significant distress or interfere with their ability to function in their day-to-day lives. OCD symptoms may wax and wane, but if left untreated they usually become more severe.

Treating OCD Fortunately, OCD can usually be treated with professional help, although improvement may take several months. • CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) encourages people to talk through their fears and behaviours and find healthier ways of thinking. Some people may need medication alongside or before CBT to relieve their anxiety enough to undertake therapy. • Medication: SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) increase serotonin levels. At higher doses they’re often highly effective in treating OCD, but need to be taken for 12 weeks before benefits are noticeable. Patients with moderate or severe OCD may need long-term medication.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company

policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Locks Heath

area and manager Justin Friel agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

Lucy Ambache talks to

CORINNE BAILEY RAE

With over five million albums sold to date, Corinne Bailey Rae has had a stellar decade in the music industry. With a new album out, she spoke to The Breeze’s Lucy Ambache about music, the joys of working in L.A. and the dangers of curly hair when you live in Leeds.

By Lucy Ambache

You’ve been missing in action for quite a while - 6 years to be exact. You don’t make a quick album do you? I don’t. No, I love to take my time. I really enjoy the process – I love writing songs, I love travelling and meeting new people, and working with new musicians. I’ve really learnt a lot about being a producer on this record. I probably took more time than I needed to, because I was loving it so much.

It’s called ‘The Heart Speaks In Whispers’. Give me the lowdown. Well the album is all about listening to the inner voice – quietening down all the chaos and drama that surrounds us to find out what’s going on inside. How nature, our bodies, our subconscious, our instincts all tell us about what’s happening in our heart. You make a lady look glamorous with a guitar. You’ve always done that as a singer songwriter but with femininity.

Well I wanted to have those heels on I guess! I love playing guitar and when I first started, I was in an indie band where it was all baby doll dresses and we all wanted to be Courtney Love. Now I feel that I’m coming into my own style.

The album was made half in Leeds, half in LA right?

I built a studio in Leeds. After my last record I wanted to have somewhere I could put all my instruments, and be playful, and we managed to make it a scene we really liked. Then we thought it would be great to go to Los Angeles and work with some different musicians – some who had been on my wish-list for a long time. But you still love being in Leeds?

I do! I guess I grew up there, both my parents are there, my sister is there at the moment, and I think it has a really good music scene. But I also like getting on the aeroplane and getting to travel as well so I feel lucky that I get to do both things. Your music travels really far doesn’t it? It has given you the ability to go around the world.

It’s a really funny thing when you release records because you never know who’s going to get to hear them. My first record was on tape in India, which I didn’t know and I’ve got friends who say things like ‘I’ve just got back from Thailand and you were playing in the restaurant’ so it’s amazing because I feel my songs have got to places I haven’t got to yet.

One of the songs on the album is titled ‘Hey I Won’t Break Your Heart’. Come on, you can’t guarantee that!

That song’s interesting because it’s about love the second time around with the same person. It’s about doing it and thinking ‘you have really hurt me but let’s trust each other’. I think as you get older, you have these crazy experiences in love and it’s not just some cookie cutter, puppy dog thing. It can be really intense. 48
