West Meon Music Festival 16th - 18th September Internationally renowned clarinettist, Michael Collins, will be joining the Primrose Piano Quartet at this year’s West Meon Music Festival, to be held in the village from the 16th to 18th September. Collins – winner of the woodwind final in the very first BBC Young Musician of the year competition back in 1978 – is recognised as one of today’s most distinguished artists and a leading exponent of his instrument. He will be performing Mozart’s ever-popular Clarinet Quintet in A major with the Primrose at the festival’s Saturday evening concert (17th September) as well as Poulenc’s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano. It will be the sixth year for the festival, founded by the Primrose – Susanne Stanzeleit (violin),
Dorothea Vogel (viola), Andrew Fuller (cello) and John Thwaites (piano) – in 2011; this year there will be a total of seven concerts over the weekend including an informal event for children, an opportunity to hear two “rising stars” on Saturday afternoon, and a candlelit concert of Viennese classics. Concert-goers can also “make a day of it” in West Meon on the Sunday with a coffee concert in the morning – including the world première of Anthony Payne’s arrangement of Elgar’s Two Miniatures, specially adapted for the Primrose, a tea-time finale which includes Dvorak’s wonderful Piano Quintet in A major, and of course, lunch in between at one of the pubs in the village or close by. As always the festival will combine music-making with support for its chosen charity: this year’s beneficiary is The
The Primrose Piano Quartet
Rosemary Foundation which provides hospice at home services in Hampshire. Ticket prices for the concerts are from £10 to £19.50, depending on event. Tickets are available online or by post from WMMF Box Office, Walnut Cottage, Hampton Hill, Swanmore, SO32 2QN. www.westmeonmusic.co.uk Concerts held at The Church of St John the Evangelist & the Church of Our Lady Cover Image : photo credit Ben Ealovega

Although music took a bit of a backseat when my children were young, they are both at university now and I have revived my interest. I attend lots of concerts and music festivals throughout the summer and have joined a Meetup group for other music lovers (www.meetup.com/OMGOutdoor-Music-Group or Google “OMG Meetup”). With a few exceptions, I’m really not into the music I grew up with; I like modern music and current artists. I’m fit, healthy and reasonably slim, but one look at my face and you’d know I’m not exactly Radio 1’s target audience, meaning I sometimes feel out of place at live events. If I go to concerts, these are mostly in the dark and I can’t generally be seen. But if I go to a music festival during the day it’s a different matter. I was near the front at one the other week and I suddenly realised I was older than anyone else there by at least 25 years. ‘The kids’ should have been staring at me wondering which teenager I was accompanying. However they were far too interested in the act on stage, their friends and themselves to bother looking at me. Yes my backache might tell me I’m too old and I certainly can’t ‘do’ camping, but I’ve come to the conclusion that nobody else is bothered about your age or how you look.

I’ve always really loved music. I can Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston remember spending my first savings on a radio/cassette player which I took everywhere with me. It cost me a small fortune in batteries and, as this was pre-headphone days, made me pretty unpopular with the neighbours.

Peter's Himalayan Trek - Everest Base Camp and Beyond! Raising Money For Care After Combat In October 2016, Peter Griffiths of Pinnacle Sound, Bishops Waltham, will take on a personal challenge and he needs your support. He will spend 21 days trekking to Everest Base Camp and on to the high passes, exceeding heights of 5480M. Peter is trekking for Care After Combat, based in Whiteley. Being an ex-solider himself (quite a few years ago!) he knows how difficult it can be for some soldiers when they leave the military. Some have visible wounds but some just struggle with life back on civistreet. They can turn to alcohol or drugs to just get by, and often
find themselves in trouble with the police as they try and adjust back into civilian life. After deciding to take on this mammoth challenge he has been in training constantly. He has lost well over 2 stone in weight and is getting himself physically fit in preparation for his adventure. If you wish to support Peter on his challenge, please kindly donate to his chosen charity Care After Combat.
Please give generously. We can help our veteran soldiers who have served our country. http://pinnaclesound.co.uk/ peters-himalayan-trek/ https://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/Peter-Griffiths16

GARDENING
Plan Your Planting by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com
Although gardens are now looking a little tired, the drier soil means it is not a good time for planting shrubs or trees. So, do what you can to perk up flower beds and borders and then start to plan ahead for spring, as garden centres are starting to take delivery of bulbs which will get your garden looking fabulous early next year.
a few bulbs. As they are often in flower before the rest of the garden gets going, they can be used to under-plant existing trees, shrubs and herbaceous flowers. Bulbs are an excellent way to make the most of every square metre of soil, and to ensure that your garden looks lovely as early as possible in the year.
Many bulbs start to put down roots at the end of summer and into autumn, so prompt planting is advisable, though tulips are best planted in October.
Many bulbs do well in containers, so if you have a permanently planted up container this too can be under-planted with several layers of spring flowering bulbs. Use a transplanting trowel to minimise damage to the existing plants’ roots.
Another option is mail order catalogues which have a bigger choice of bulbs, often including more unusual varieties. Time is of the essence, however, so send off for these as soon as possible so that you can choose some delightful bulbs ready for planting in the next month or so. Before buying, decide where in the garden you can cram in
10
If you are unsure which bulbs go together, don’t feel frightened to experiment. Alternatively, many catalogues and garden centres offer mixed selections of bulbs for specific purposes and there are also some lovely packs of bulbs following colour themes. These usually represent good value for money too. If you have a dull patch of lawn, brighten it up in the early months by planting some small bulbs. Crocus or miniature narcissus are particularly useful, as once the flowers have faded you don’t
have much deteriorating foliage to cope with. In larger areas, consider planting up drifts of full-sized daffodils, but make sure you don’t want to mow the grass beneath these trees or shrubs regularly, as you can’t safely remove the leaves of the daffodils until at least six weeks after flowering. Check that bulbs are in good condition before you buy, avoiding any which show even the slightest signs of deterioration such as sunken brown spots, excessive softness or patches of bluish mould. Larger bulbs generally seem to do better than smaller versions of the same variety. For large quantities of the same variety, buy a net of bulbs from your garden centre or direct from a mail order specialist nursery. If you can’t plant your bulbs promptly, keep them in a cool and well ventilated spot before planting, as this is essential to reduce the risk of them deteriorating. Next month I’ll be looking at novel ways to make the best use of the gorgeous array of available bulbs, so plant some now and then treat yourself to a few more for September planting!

Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club ‘NOW THE CARNIVAL IS OVER’ what does Rotary do? Here is a glimpse of the variety of things the club is currently up to: On Saturday 2nd July, BW Rotary organised a very successful STROKE AWARENESS day in Bishop’s Waltham, in partnership with The Stroke Association. A total of 81people had their blood pressure taken, of which 30 were recommended to see their GP within one month and 1 within in 1 week. So, hopefully by our efforts today we have helped a number of people to receive medical attention which will prevent them having further problems in the future. In June, Ian and Mandi, (back
right) visited the RAINBOW CENTRE in Fareham, to see the work they do there with children and adults, and presented them with a cheque for £250 towards their work. The Rainbow Centre work supports children with Cerebral Palsy and adults with a stroke, MS and Parkinson’s, adult Cerebral Palsy, Head Injury, and their families.
On the last day of June there was a Handover of the BW Rotary Presidency from Ian Treveil to Maurice Tester. This is an annual event when the Presidency changes over, and was a brief moment of relaxation and fun for Rotarians.
Now to the future. BW Rotary are organising the local, annual ROAD RACE AND FUN RUN on Sunday 18th September, in association with Fareham Crusaders Running Club and Bishop’s Waltham Junior School. The race combines a more serious 5 miles Road Race and 2 miles Fun Run: providing experienced athletes with a testing challenge through beautiful Hampshire countryside. The 2 mile Fun Run is generally dominated by youngsters: it gives local groups the opportunity to raise money for their own funds by way of sponsorship. The 5 mile Road Race is accredited by England Athletics. Funds raised from this event will go to local organisations such as Fareham Crusaders and Bishop’s Waltham Junior School. If you would like to participate, please go to www. bishopswalthamrotary.org.uk , complete the application form and send it to the person listed there.

RECIPE
Salmon and Broccoli Quiche Serves 6
Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes, plus chilling and cooling
A rich and creamy quiche packed full of succulent salmon flakes and broccoli. Serve warm or cold with a crisp green leaf salad. Ingredients: • 250g shortcrust pastry • 300g salmon fillets • 200g small broccoli florets • 4 large eggs • 250ml double cream • 100ml milk • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 50g Cheddar cheese, finely grated
TIP Replace the salmon with flaked smoked mackerel for a change of flavour and add a handful of fresh chopped dill or parsley to the egg mixture. 16
1. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20cm loose-based flan tin (it should be at least 4cm deep). Trim off the excess pastry and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
2. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and baking beans. Place the flan tin on the baking sheet in the oven and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-6 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 190C/170C fan/Gas 5.
3. Meanwhile, place the salmon fillets in a deep frying pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil then simmer gently for 5-6 minutes until just cooked through. Remove with a slotted spoon and leave until cold. Roughly flake the salmon discarding any skin and bones. Steam the broccoli florets for 1-2 minutes until almost tender.
4. Place the flaked salmon and broccoli in the pastry case. Whisk the eggs in large jug then whisk in the double cream and milk. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
5. Gently pour the egg mixture over the filling then scatter over the grated cheese. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown. Serve warm or cold.

And Another Thing... Tom Spoils A Good Walk by Tom Hughes
From the other end of the Sunday breakfast table, my Dearly Beloved stared at me in disbelief. “Tom, what on earth are you wearing?” Sporting my Pringle jumper, Farah slacks and Michael Jackson glove I replied, “What does it look like? I’m off to spoil a good walk. Nigel has asked to make up a four-ball.” “Does he know you can’t play?” “Rubbish, I made par at Royal Birkdale.” “You mean you beat Evan and Hannah at crazy golf on Southport pier? Well off you go then!” After squeezing the Mondeo Ghia between two shiny Germanic tanks, I breezed into the club house to be greeted by Nigel with Simon and Chris - two tall chaps clad from head to foot in Ping and Nike. “Tom! Ready for a spot of match play?” “Sure! Where do I go to rent some bats?” After kitting myself out with a half-set from the club shop, we strolled onto the first tee. With the dew glistening on the immaculate fairway, I squinted at the flag fluttering gently in the mid-morning mist. With the pines swaying imperiously to my right, 20
the club house nestled serenely on my left, surely this was golfing Nirvana. As agreed, Simon had first dibs at the green. A suggestive wiggle of his haunches then - thwack! His small white missile was sent into a perfect trajectory towards the hole. Nigel was up next, and proceeded to hook his effort into the light rough. Third to tee off was the debonair Chris, who effortlessly located the fairway. Soon it was all eyes on me. After dithering over my weapon of choice, a clearing of throats told me that my procrastination was getting on everyone’s wick. There was only one thing for it - death or glory. It was time to deploy the heavy artillery. “The driver, Tom? Feeling brave?” I blew out my cheeks and narrowed my eyes. After a quick check on the position of my target, I pulled back my mighty masher and let fly. Immediately after my swing I was up on one leg, leaning forward to check the progress of my effort. “Can you see it?” I glanced hopefully at Nigel who grimaced and then pointed at my feet. I looked down to see my ball still sitting happily on the tee, awaiting further instructions. Without skipping a beat I spat on
my hands and announced, “Okay, enough practice swings - let’s get off the mark.” Like a coiled spring I unwound my twisted torso and whoosh…into the air she went, arcing beautifully into the sky. Unfortunately the item in the stratosphere wasn’t the ball - it was my club. With all the dignity I could muster, I trudged off to retrieve my equipment. After my fellow golfers were back up off the ground, I decided to follow Nigel’s advice: “Tom, why don’t you play it safe with a threeiron?” And so we slogged onwards. Finally, as dusk began to fall, we reached the eighteenth, by which time Simon and Chris, not unreasonably, had had quite enough. And then it happened. On the final fairway I took a battered seven iron and swung it in the general direction of the pin. Thwack! I connected perfectly and up went my ball - a pure golf shot, rising gracefully skywards before plopping down gently onto the green…then - a hop, a skip…and unbelievably, in she rolled! “Did you see that? Did you see that!?” Nigel put his head in his hands as Chris turned to Simon and sighed, “How I pity his poor wife.”

It doesn’t take that long to play, surely?” “Well it does right now, but as I practice more and more I’ll go round quicker! Here they are!” “Listen, if you think I’m staying at home every
Sunday while you cut sods out of the fairway, you can bog off! And take off Granddad’s plus fours, you look ridiculous. Now go and set the table.” And so, as I miserably decanted the Merlot, I wondered if Tiger Woods ever had as much trouble getting out the house. Follow Tom @groomsdaybook 21

Slimming Success in The Meon Valley Slimming World Consultants Suzi Buccheri and Rachel Marriott have had such an overwhelming response to their Slimming Groups that they have now added extra group days and sessions, providing extra opportunity for local residents to attend. Suzi has been maintaining her 4 stone weight loss for over 2 and a half years with Slimming World, the UK’s leading slimming club. Suzi has seen the popular groups in Bishops Waltham and Wickham grow from 4 sessions per week to 7 sessions with a very popular 3.30pm session in Wickham on a Wednesday at the Wickham Centre. Rachel, who transformed her life by losing 5 stone, has been in the role of Slimming World Consultant for 6 months. She has successfully
opened a group in Shedfield. Rachel says “Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping others to lose weight- but now I am supporting so many members in my local community. Slimming World isn’t just about what you eat, it’s about getting the support to choose a healthier lifestyle for you and is suitable for those around you too.” “The popularity of Slimming World groups shows that slimmers are looking for a healthy flexible eating plan based on normal everyday foods that is more likely to fit in with family and has the added benefit of improving the health of those

TRAVEL
A First Timers Guide to Japan A country of contrasts, with its ancient traditions, state of the art technology, the most modern of cities, historic castles and stunning mountain scenery. Discovering this mix of wonders is a major part of what makes travelling here so appealing.
bullet train, and where better to head for than Kyoto, a city that really contrasts with Tokyo.
Where to go The nation’s capital, Tokyo is a great starting point for any tour of Japan - it’s a unique experience. Watching the sea of people rushing across the famous Ginza intersection, squeezing into a metro train before heading to one of the local karaoke bars is all part of a classic Tokyo visit.
Onsen Onsen are natural hot springs providing the perfect place to rest and relax after a few days in the city or trekking in national parks.
From Tokyo, there are many amazing day trips. One is to Nikko, the most famous attraction of which is its line of Jizo Buddhas, so old that they’re covered in moss. You can also go to Mount Fuji, which is one of the country’s most iconic sites. This active volcano is absolutely beautiful and easily admired from ground level, but if you’re feeling adventurous you might prefer to make the trip to the summit. When it is time to leave Tokyo there is only one way to go, by 28
Home to an incredibly impressive 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, it was actually once the nation’s capital - a title it held for over 1,000 years. Plus, there are more than 2,000 Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines to discover here too.
Onsen can be found in various locations across the country, but the oldest is thought to be the Yunomine Onsen. Here the water is said to change colour seven times a day and purification rituals are undertaken in the mineral-rich pools. Castles Japan is a land of castles, with many fine specimens to be explored. Each one has its own distinct character and claim to fame. These include Himeji Castle, Matsumoto Castle and Shuri Castle Park, where you will find ruins associated with the Ryukyuan culture, which thrived in the region between the 12th and the 17th centuries.
Festivals One of the nicest things about a number of these occasions is that they celebrate natural phenomena. Take the Cherry Blossom Festival, for example, which recognises how beautiful the landscape becomes when it is covered in light pink flowers. Others include the snow and ice festivals held in Sapporo to the north of the country, where the air is cooler. Slurp your noodles And finally, don’t be afraid to slurp your noodles. Dishes like ramen are virtually impossible to eat without at least a bit of slurping, and this is expected - in fact, it’s considered polite, because it shows that you’re enjoying your food! 12 Manor Court, Barnes Wallis Road Segensworth East, Fareham PO15 5TH T: 01489 579975 E: holidays@amitytravel.co.uk W: www.amityleisuretravel.co.uk

Dividing Your Pennies What does the law say?
Family Law Feature
It is important for married couples in the midst of separation to carefully consider their financial position. Money that was financing one household must now support two. But what does the law say about how the matrimonial finances should be divided? The law can be complex and is applied to the unique circumstances of each family. This is most relevant where there are children to consider. Family Law is also discretionary in that a variety of outcomes could all be considered fair. Not a case of black and white, rather varying hues of technicolour in between! The starting point is one of equality, ie a 50:50 division of all assets and an equal responsibility for joint debts. Other factors must then be considered to include: • The length of the marriage;
• • • • •
The ages of the parties; Contributions to the marriage; Standard of living and that any reduction should be borne equally; The income, earning capacity and financial resources available to each party; and The parties’ financial needs, obligations and responsibilities.
With so many factors to consider, Trethowans are here to guide you and are committed to acheiving the best agreement for you and your family. You will be supported at every step of the way from obtaining and considering financial disclosure to securing a legally binding agreement. Kate Stovold is a family Solicitor at Trethowans LLP .To arrange a thirty minute Free Initial Consultation at the office in Hedge End, please call her on 023 8082 0511.

BEAUTY
Beauty and the Beach By Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk Beauty buys to see you through those hazy summer days. When it comes to packing for holidays, I tend to fill every last millimetre of my case. So I do like products that save space and weight. Lush’s shampoo bars do both. Plus, as they’re solid bars, they can go in your hand luggage. There are a fair few to choose from, but my current favourite is Montalbano, £5.95, because of its fresh lemon scent. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not nearly as evangelical as I should be about applying suntan lotion, but I am trying to do better. The fact that every year more than 14,000 people in the UK develop a malignant melanoma is a pretty good motivator. As an extra incentive, UVA rays also lead to premature wrinkles and age spots, and they can penetrate skin even when it’s cloudy. So this summer, I’m slapping on the suntan lotion. I tend to use factor 25, but on days when I can get away with an SPF of 15, I usually reach for Green People’s Sun Lotion with Natural Tan Accelerator, £20. It’s a great choice if you have sensitive skin (which I do), as it’s very gentle, so unlikely to irritate. It’s also rich in seed oils, so leaves my skin feeling moisturised. The natural tan accelerator has been shown to increase tanning by up to 25% and can make a tan last much longer. 34
I admit it can be a bit of a faff rubbing in suntan lotion, so I’m rather tempted by Colorescience Sunforgettable. With an SPF of 50 it gives great protection, but as it’s a loose mineral powder, you just brush it on. You can wear it on top of makeup and it’s available in three shades – fair, medium and tan. For me, the price is the downside. At £41.50, it’s certainly not wallet-friendly. But it is supposed to last for ages, and avoiding the scratchy, sticky sand/lotion mix might just make it worth the price, see www.beauty-product-online.co.uk. A day in the sun can leave skin feeling dry and dehydrated. I tend to use cocoa butter for putting the moisture back, but I am looking forward to trying Vichy’s new Ideal Soleil After Sun, £13. Key ingredients include shea oil and blackcurrant seed oil, so it’s rich in omega fatty acids, which can really help to boost hydration. What’s more, you can use it on dry skin or in the shower. I love treating my toenails to a professional gel polish, but if I don’t have time, I always have a few nail polishes at home to choose from. Crabtree and Eveyln’s Nail Lacquer in Wisteria, £6, is at the top of my shopping list. It’s just the right shade of blue to gives a good pop of colour, while being neutral enough to work with most outfits.

INTERVIEW
LeAnn Rimes LeAnn Rimes first hit the charts in 1998 with ‘How Do I Live’ Since then, she has starred in the classic movie ‘Coyote Ugly’, won two Grammys, a dozen Billboard awards, two world music gongs and a roomful of country music awards! She’s back with a new single and album and The Breeze’s Robert Kenny caught up with her to talk hits, new music and whether you should mention a lady’s age.
Congratulations on the new single. It’s called ‘The Story’ and it’s one of those songs that just hooks you straight in. Your voice on the opening line just grabs you. Thank you. Yeah this song is so beautiful. It’s a love story but I think it’s also a story of selfacceptance and owning every bit of your story and your life and how we’re all connected, and one collective story. So I think all of us can relate to this in a number of ways. You can get to a point where you settle into yourself and own every piece of you – it’s really empowering! ‘How Do I Live Without You’ is number four on Billboard’s greatest songs of all time. That is absolutely amazing. You must be thrilled with that? It’s mind blowing actually. People really connected with that song in such a way that it became a part of everyone’s lives. There are weddings, funerals, whatever – it’s amazing what music can do. So I’m very grateful for that song and still enjoy singing it. And ‘Can’t Fight The Moonlight’ was number one in 11 countries. How are you going to top that?! There’s got to be something on this record that’ll do that! I do believe it’s possible – I really do! There are so many awards you’ve won. You’re the youngest ever Grammy award winner?
36
Yeah I was fourteen. That’s still there – that’s pretty crazy! And now you’re in your thirties. Can we mention that? Yeah you can totally talk about that. I’m 33. Quite a lot in music and even how we listen has changed in those eighteen or so years. Looking back, would you still take this career path? Would you change anything? I’m sure there are things that I would probably change but at the same time, I feel that everything that I’ve gone through has led me to this point, to be prepared for now. I’ve learned so much and I think you have to go through the ups and the downs to get to this point.
Robert Kenny presents the daytime show on The Breeze every weekday from 10am-3pm with the latest entertainment news and the chance to win up to a £1,000 every day with ‘All Or Nothing’. Find out more at the

New Barchester Care Home Opens In Fareham Staff at The Fernes Care Home on Samuel Mortimer Close, which opens this month, are excited to be welcoming the first residents to move in and are looking forward to serving the local community for many years to come.
The stunning purposebuilt home, which has spectacular views over the Meon Valley, offers quality residential care services and dedicated dementia care to people from surrounding areas. Barchester is committed to providing the best possible care environments and promotes dignity and choice by tailoring surroundings to accommodate people requiring different care services. The Fernes has been designed to a high standard with luxury fittings and furnishings throughout and ample dining and lounge space for everyone to enjoy. At The Fernes, as in many Barchester homes, dementia services are offered in a unique care environment called a Memory Lane Community. The purposeful design encourages people living with dementia to lead a full and active life, staying as independent as possible. The living space encourages residents to interact
with their surroundings, for example facilities such as life-skills kitchens allow those individuals living with dementia to continue to experience the familiarity of everyday household tasks like setting the table for dinner, washing up or baking. The home’s dedicated care staff are trained to recognise the importance of the lives and individual experiences of all residents and make it a priority to know the life histories of the people in their care. “Providing comfort and a homely environment in first-class care settings is something we are proud of”, says Catherine Bezer, General Manager at The Fernes Care Home. “We look forward to providing person-centred care for all the
individuals who choose to live at The Fernes. “The best way to find out about the care we provide is to come and visit us and get a good feel about what The Fernes is all about and how we tailor care to meet your needs or those of a relative or friend. Remember, our doors are always open for anyone wanting a tour and we’ll always do our best to accommodate requests.” If you would like to take the opportunity to see The Fernes first-hand, please make an appointment to come and visit us, so we can demonstrate the warmth of our welcome. Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company
policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Meon Valley
area and manager Justin Friel agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

MINI Countryman vs Skoda Yeti By James Baggott MINI Countryman
All MINIs have a distinctive and instantly recognisable look to them, and with the Countryman range, it carries this identifiable image into a stockier frame to give you more space and practicality. The stylish bodywork helps to make the Countryman a tantalising option in the CUV sector and with great additions and features to match, it’s difficult to see why you wouldn’t choose it. However, it has competition from Skoda’s Yeti, a CUV similar in size and price and both cars have their good elements. For starters, both models have had recent redesigns to create more space and alter their looks to be more modern and upto-date. It has to be said that the Countryman certainly looks better than the Yeti, with the distinguishing features of the
MINI range, such as the shape, the headlights and front grille, to make it truly stand out on the road. The size of both models also make them very practical, with the smaller Countryman offering 350 litres of space in the boot with the seats up, whilst the Yeti has only 66 litres more in a car 20cm longer and 10cm taller. This means you can get more for your money space-wise in the Countryman, especially as the range starts off cheaper than the Skoda. Customisability has also been a recent appeal of the MINI market, and with the Countryman this is no exception. With MINI’s design additions that can be fitted to the whole range, you can personalise your Countryman as much as you wish. Also you can fit satellite navigation, stereo system, leather trim and ‘Run-Flat’ tyres to your model; great options that can be added to any of the range. Good options aren’t as easy to come by on the Yeti, as the better choices to fit are only available further up the Yeti model range, whilst almost all are compatible with every Countryman model. To compete with the Yeti’s off-road capabilities in the Yeti
44
Outdoor and more expensive models, MINI offers the ‘All-4’ all-wheel drive system throughout the class. With a higher ride height and great grip on offer, the Countryman All-4 system will give you confidence both on and off road, with only a small premium on top of the two-wheel drive versions. The Yeti’s base model is fitted with a 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine producing 110hp, whilst the 1.6-litre in the One produces just 98hp. This doesn’t compromise much in speed with only a marginal difference in acceleration. Overall, with a wider variety of vehicle and equipment options, value for money and great 4x4 system, the MINI Countryman is the better option of the two, and with the great looking bodywork to encase you, why wouldn’t you want to drive it? The MINI Countryman is available from £17,105 for the One Countryman, with the top of the range 218hp John Cooper Works All-4 starting at £28,985. For more information on the Countryman or any other models in the MINI range, contact your nearest Inchcape MINI dealership.
