Singer-songwriter going back to his roots Singer-songwriter Andy Comley is moving out of the usual venues and heading back to his roots, by embarking on a tour of rural halls, which will begin in Hampshire and then move countrywide. Having played on three continents and supported some of the UK’s top singer-songwriters such as Boo Hewerdine (Eddie Reader), Emily Barker, and Amy Wadge (Ed Sheeran), he explained why he has now set his sights closer to home. “I believe in community, and arts provision for all, and I understand that the local hall can be an important place for people to meet and create social ties” said the 47 year old, who grew up in the sleepy Hampshire village of Owslebury. However, he also has artistic reasons for moving out of the city. “I want a different, intimate atmosphere for my music, where there’s no distraction, and the audience can focus and be transported musically, and I think we can find it in small halls” The gigs will be a sit down, lights out, spotlight on,

affairs but that’s not the only way they will differ from your average gig. “Although the music will be our usual line-up of myself on acoustic guitar and vocals and Dave Bulbeck on double bass, this time we’ll be playing and singing to only one microphone to get a rich, but delicate, live sound - more of the player, less of the technology. It’s an old-time way of performing in the USA, but you don’t really see it over here”. And Andy believes that this format will make for intimate, atmospheric evenings for the audience and performer alike. Andy is planning to put on two warm-up shows in Hampshire at the end of the year, before the tour begins properly in 2017. The first of these is at Shedfield Reading Room, on the 26th of November. However when I relate my summer stories, they are nearly always the things that went wrong. Not major lifechanging disasters of course, but great pub anecdotes. I went camping with some friends and asked my husband to pack a hammer in case the ground was hard. I thought he’d put in a mallet. A cursory security check of my bags upon arrival had a security guard holding up a heavy-duty claw hammer, questioning why I’d need that to put tent pegs into sandy soil. Or the fancy dress occasion when a friend’s cheap tinsel wig was so static that it stuck to her head, face and neck, and up her nose and in her mouth, and turned her into a walking glitterball. Then there was the trip to France when the car broke down and we had to leave it in France for repair. A week later husband Kev had a 14-hour journey including a flight, a car hire, a taxi ride, a long drive, a ferry trip and another two-hour drive to repatriate it. All our fun stories actually come from being on a modest budget. If we were really wealthy we wouldn’t be camping, would have quality fancy dress, and wouldn’t have an old car. I recognise this is still a privileged life, but vast amounts of money isn’t the answer to true happiness.

Divorcing at Halloween: Trick or Treat? First Witch: “What are you doing?” Second Witch: “I am making a special Halloween potion that requires the eye of a werewolf, the gizzard of a ghoul, the liver of a vampire, the horn of a unicorn and the heart of a lawyer. So far, I have everything I need except the lawyer’s heart. First Witch: “Good luck with that!” As Halloween approaches with ghosts and ghouls, pumpkin carving, and ‘trick or treating’, I wanted to take the opportunity to stress that if you are facing the sad inevitability that your marriage has come to an end, divorce need not be scary. Meeting with a solicitor need not be scary. Specialist practitioners understand that discussing your private life can be difficult. It can be upsetting. However, a vast number of solicitors specialising in Family Law are members of a body known as Resolution. This organisation comprises nearly 6,500 members including lawyers, marriage counsellors and life coaches. Members follow a Code of Practice

that promotes a non-confrontational approach to divorce. Family breakdown resulting in divorce is difficult already; there is no need to over complicate. Without exception, all members of the Family Team at Trethowans are members of Resolution. As a result, we serve our clients in a proactive and approachable manner. We are all contactable via our direct lines and will always have time to address your concerns and to advise in a sensitive and pragmatic way, to include that we are extremely transparent as to costs. Whilst lawyers in general are often the brunt of jokes as to poor character, the reality is that here at Trethowans, we take the time to listen to you, to understand your family circumstances and to work with you to find a solution that is long lasting. Kate Stovold is an Associate at Trethowans LLP specialising in Family Law and would be very happy to assist with any queries in relation to divorce, financial matters or arrangements for children. To arrange a free initial thirty minute meeting at the Trethowans office in Hedge End, please call her on 023 8082 0511.

AUSTRALIA WHERE THE SUMMER NEVER ENDS If you don’t want summer to end, head down under this winter where you will find not only superb weather but pristine beaches, vibrant cities, stunning scenery and weird and wonderful wildlife that you won’t find anywhere else on earth. The most popular itinerary for first time visitors to Australia is an east coast extravaganza taking in the icons of Sydney and the Barrier Reef as well as some of the less well known but equally inspiring sites such as Fraser Island and Lamington National Park. Soft adventure is very popular, including treetop walks and 4-wheel drive tours through the dense sub-tropical rainforest. As you meander up the east coast, take time out at Lake Mckenzie to swim in the crystal clear waters and marvel at your surroundings which could easily be mistaken for an idyllic beach in the Indian Ocean. A typical itinerary will include time in Sydney. This exciting and vibrant city always has plenty to offer from breathtaking harbour views to singing waiters at the Opera House. Once out of town the 800 mile drive north to Brisbane has plenty of opportunities to break the journey. You can expect the warmest of welcomes with The Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley and Port Stephens amongst the most popular stopover destinations.

On arrival in Brisbane we recommend that you hand back the car and let Queensland Rail take control. The journey north to Cairns on the Spirit of Queensland is a fantastic experience where you get the opportunity to unwind and relax in the company of your fellow passengers. The rail journey north to Proserpine and the Whitsundays is very much part of the whole holiday experience rather than just a means of travel. Try out the new RailBed, an Australian first: the revolutionary RailBed is a spacious and comfortable seat by day and converts to a lie-flat bed at night, making sure you will be fresh and ready for your Whitsunday adventure. These picture perfect islands with endless ways to explore will keep you busy for several days. The final leg of the journey is taken on the state of the art Tilt Train from Proserpine to Cairns. Cairns is the central hub for tropical North Queensland and has an array of accommodation options to suite all tastes and makes for a great base to visit the reef and rainforests of this region. Take the Kuranda Rail service up the mountain and spend time in Kuranda Village before returning by Skyrail. The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway experience spans 7.5kms over Australia’s superb tropical rainforests. You’ll glide just metres above the rainforest canopy before descending through the canopy layers and deep into the heart of the forest at Skyrail’s two rainforest mid-stations for the ultimate tropical rainforest experience. These are just a few of the many holiday ideas available. To find the perfect travel itinerary to suite your needs you should contact the Australia experts at Amity Travel Private Client today.

Clear road ahead for Meon Valley Community Bus A new minibus paid for by the Department of Transport’s Community Mini-bus Fund has put community transport in the Meon Valley on the road to a secure future.

Launching the new Meon Valley Community Bus are (from left to right) Central Meon Valley Ward Councillors Frank Pearson and Vicki Weston and MVCBA committee members Richard Blackburn, David Williams, David Erskine, Meon Valley MP George Hollingbery, Mike Vogado, John Shorrocks, Dick Taylor, Bob Stranks and Pete Woodacre.

The new Ford diesel minibus – built to latest Euro VI emissions standards - was officially unveiled at the AGM of the Meon Valley Community Bus Association (MVCBA) in July and is now in service on regular routes from Soberton and Newtown to Fareham, Winchester, Waterlooville and Petersfield and is also available for charter by community groups. Run entirely by volunteers, the association covers its costs mainly through the Hampshire County Council travel scheme which reimburses it when bus passes are used. Its remaining income comes from farepaying passengers and charter fees. Last year the bus carried nearly 1200 passengers on its scheduled trips – most are intent on shopping, but others meet up with friends and family in town or do their banking and visit council offices or libraries. Certain passengers simply enjoy meeting up on the bus for some company and a good chat. Summing up the importance of the bus to the local community, Association Chairman Professor David Williams said: “The real value of this service is that people can continue living in our remote villages who might not otherwise be able to manage, due to lack of public transport. We are grateful to the Department of Transport for this grant which secures the future of the community bus service for years to come.” Every effort is made to ensure the service is fine-tuned to passengers’ needs - a new timetable introduced in January added a monthly trip to Petersfield and an extra Winchester run, by popular request. Also, free “park and ride” facilities at Soberton Village Hall and Rookesbury Hall are 12

making it easier for people not on the bus route to take advantage of the service – and the MVCBA hopes to add to these in future. Frailer passengers get special help, too, as drivers are usually more than happy to include request stops or drop passengers at their front door. The scheduled service makes a huge difference to local residents. Anne Cole of Soberton said: ““I don’t drive, so I rely on the Community Bus to do my weekly shopping in Fareham. Without it I would find it more difficult to live independently in Soberton. I’ve used it for years and it’s a real lifeline. I would be lost without it.” Paying tribute to the volunteers behind the MVCBA at the AGM, Meon Valley MP George Hollingbery said: “It’s a real credit to your organisation that you have secured this fantastic investment in your community. At a time when many services are disappearing to have a scheduled bus for this area is very important.” Community Groups chartered the bus 35 times last year for outings. They included the Meon Valley Active Retirement Association, local schools and scout groups. Winchester’s Theatre Royal also used it for a free Theatre Bus service which is due to be repeated this autumn – see theatre brochure or website for details. To enquire about chartering the Community Bus ring Richard Blackburn on 01489 877391. The Meon Valley Community Bus Timetable can be found via the “our villages” section on www.soberton.org

Mark Franklin talks to

JIMMY OSMOND The Breeze recently welcomed legendary Jimmy Osmond as guest presenter throughout the month of September. Mark Franklin spoke to him about fifty years in show business, touring and being a radio presenter.

Do you enjoy doing the show on The Breeze?

I love it. I’ve always grown up being on the other end of the microphone so being able to do a radio show, especially in the UK, is something that I always wanted to do. You’ve had such a staggering career – and you’re celebrating your fifty year anniversary by releasing a new album and touring in the UK as well!

Yeah, who would have thought that - fifty years ago when I was just a three-year old boy, performing with my brothers. I thought every kid did what I did! I never thought I’d end up owning Andy’s (Williams) Theatre and being empowered by him and his family to continue to celebrate his award winning music. We have 27 dates in the UK following our Las Vegas run and it’s just so fun to be a part of this show. It’s not about me, it’s about remembering his amazing music. Andy touched so many people’s lives with his songs, videos and TV series. I have some special guests – Charlie Green from Britain’s Got Talent, Emily Penny, surprises and the Moon River Band.

You mentioned Britain’s Got Talent. So staying on the reality TV theme, of course Donny (Osmond) won the US version of Strictly a few years back. Would you do our version if someone said to you “come and have a go”? Well I don’t know. I’m always up for anything – from cooking to the jungle and now a presenter on The Breeze - so who knows what’s in the pipeline. I’m just honoured and grateful to be asked to do these projects. One thing that is so special for me, and the reason why I love the UK so much, is that I’m not just a guy that ‘was in that 14

band that recorded that song’. You guys have allowed me to do these unique things as an individual which has been so much fun.

And you can hear that in your voice when you’re presenting the show. Your anecdotes and passion for the music (yours and others) really shines through. Well I kind of grew up in a different way. It was this old Hollywood kind of training ground where we had these mentors who we knew as just average, regular guys who became legendary entertainers. We would be on their variety shows, they would be on our variety shows and to be able to talk about some of these artists (I hope it doesn’t sound like I’m bragging) I have some really unique stories as I got to know these people as ‘everyday people’ and work alongside them. Their songs, their music and those memories together have really been a really special tapestry of experiences for me. Tour dates Southsea – Kings Theatre (October 20th) Reading – The Hexagon Theatre (October 5th)

Mark Franklin presents the Breeze Classic Countdown every Saturday from 11am www.thebreeze.com

And Another Thing...

Halloween Story by Tom Hughes After blasting out Monster Mash for the third time in a row, I pulled the Mondeo Ghia onto the path, shut the door, pointed the key over my head to plip the lock and then - blast! I remembered what I had forgotten to purchase - a pumpkin! “Oh, don’t bother about that Tom - now wrap up warm, we’re taking Hannah and her friend Laura to ScaryFarm for Halloween. Come on, it’ll be fun.” Unsure of future EU subsidies, some farmers had taken to adapting their land for different uses, and our local bumpkin had plumped for a “Halloween Experience”. Skidding around on a muddy field strewn with straw, the Mondeo struggled to gain purchase on the slippery terrain. “We’ll never get off here later, look at how it’s churning up.” “Tom, stop moaning - now what do you want to do first, the Ghost Walk or the Scary Maze?” But before we decided on the first attraction, a far more terrifying prospect awaited: the chap on the gate selling tickets.

18

glared at the two sophisticated young ladies by my side. “How old are they?” “They’re both fourteen!” I blurted out. Eyes narrowing, he flipped through his day glow pad and ripping off four tickets sneered, “Aren’t they a bit young for wearing all that muck on their faces?” “Excuse me young man, I think we’ll decide on the appropriateness of their appearance, thank you.” “Thirty six quid mate.” “Thirty - are you taking the…?” “Ten quid for grown-ups, eight for the ‘children’ “ “How much for a family ticket?” “Thirty five.” Snatching the tickets from the enormous hand, we trudged through the mud towards the Ghost Trail, which amounted to not much more than a wander through a soggy wood with a boredlooking girl clad in rags who had painted her face white. “And ‘ere be where, in ancient times, a terrible thing ‘appened wot gave all us villagers a most terrible fright.”

“Two adults and two children, please.”

Feeling distinctly underwhelmed by her dreary soliloquy, I whispered to Sarah, “Thirty five quid to listen to this pile of old baloney?”

spirit of the evening, Sarah dragged me away to a large tent where she plonked me next to the industrial heater and shoved a cup of mulled wine under my nose. “Now drink this and shut up. I’ll drive home.” “Well, best of luck getting out that field dear.” Heartened by the spicy brew, my spirits lifted. “What’s up next on this Scarefest, then?” “The Maze of Horrors. Follow us.” We joined the queue at the entrance to a copse of freshly planted leylandii as muffled screams of terror emanated from deep inside the man-made evergreen forest. Hannah and her friend began giggling. “Our mates were here last night. Dad, it’s dead scary!”

screaming of her own.

And so we entered. Round each dark bend we crept, waiting for a horrible ghoul to appear. Then, out jumped a slip of a girl sporting a grey wig. The girls screeched in delighted horror. I rolled my eyes. “Is that it?” I groaned.

Outside the maze, my Dearly Beloved embarked on a most unwelcome debrief.

Then we ventured deeper into the woods. Leading the way, I turned a corner to be greeted by - and I kid you not - a seven foot ginger monster with huge claws and red eyes.

“Have you stopped shaking yet?”

“MmmmHuuurrr!” Terrified, I hid behind my wife for safety, screaming, “Sarah! Make it go away!” But Sarah couldn’t help, she was too busy doing some

“So Tom, did you enjoy that?” “It was OK.” Sat back in the car Sarah revved the engine as we spun ineffectually around in the mud. A knock on the window heralded salvation. “Need a push?” It was the giant farmer’s son who effortlessly heaved us onto firmer ground. And do you know something - as I turned to thank him, I swear I saw his eyes glowing red... 19

We Try Nissan’s Bonkers Bladeglider As we hit the back straight of the twisting kart track in the middle of a shanty town in Brazil, the wail of the concept car’s electric motors reaches a crescendo. It’s banshee-like in pitch and would rival a hover bike from Star Wars in tone – this is noise like no electric car that’s gone before it, and it’s pointing to the future of electric vehicles (EVs) for Nissan. We’ve come to Rio de Janeiro to experience this mad Batmobile-like sports car concept, dubbed the BladeGlider. With a narrow front track and aerodynamically designed body that widens like an arrow to the rear, the concept car takes design cues from the Delta Wing Le Mans racer of 2012. Although that car’s track time was short lived, the lessons Nissan learned are brought back to life in this mad sports car concept that’s part Robin 22

By James Baggott

Reliant, part McLaren F1, part Caterham. With two 174bhp electric motors, independently powering each rear wheel, the BladeGlider is good for nearly 120mph and 60mph in under five seconds. It’s been built in conjunction with F1 experts Williams Advanced Engineering and features an unusual three-seater layout where both passengers sit behind and either side of the driver. Unfortunately, we weren’t allowed a drive of the multimillion pound concept car; however, we did get to experience it from the passenger seat. Even from here it’s clear the BladeGlider offers a completely unique driving experience. Those two front wheels and the wide-track rear make for a planted and agile ride. On the tiny test track it whipped between corners with a whiff of tyresmoking oversteer when our exuberant test driver got playful. For us mere mortals the BladeGlider offers a drift

mode, similar to that found on the Focus RS, for sideways fun – yet more technology debuting here that is likely to filter down to other Nissans. The BladeGlider did feet softly sprung, though, more hot hatch than sports car over the kerbs. But most importantly it was great fun – and, with the instant torque available from those electric motors, it felt swift too. It’s not supercar fast, but will push you back into the sports seats and throw you around enough to induce a whiff of travel sickness. There’s currently no word on range, though – which we’d guess means it’s currently pretty poor. Unfortunately, the chances of being able to order a BladeGlider from your local dealer any time soon is highly unlikely. This is just one of two produced and they’re likely to be the last. Well, in this form at least.

So you might be wondering what the point is? Well, Nissan says that’s simple, really: they want to make people realise electrification doesn’t mean dull, and a sports car concept as bonkers as this proves otherwise. Nissan is long overdue a sister car to the Leaf, the world’s best-selling EV, and many will be hoping the lessons Nissan has learned here will lead to a thrilling follow-up. Fortunately, after a very short passenger ride, all the signs are pointing in the right direction for a smash hit.

ART DECO STYLE Decadent Deco Art Deco never goes out of fashion – By Katherine Sorrell and, according to a recent survey, it’s the nation’s favourite design style. We take a look at the history of this glamorous, good-looking movement. The Roaring Twenties – think jazz, flappers, slick automobiles, the talkies and skyscrapers: it was all about glamour, drama and modernity. Consumerism had arrived, and the timing was right for a new style. Also known as Art Moderne, Jazz Moderne or simply Deco, Art Deco style was rooted in the world of pre-First World War leading French design, but only became widely recognised after the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. French designers were combining classical features and rare, luxury materials with exciting new influences such as contemporary art, the exotic Ballets Russes and a fascination with all things Egyptian, as well as the art and artefacts 30

of Japan, Africa, native America, Mexico and the Middle East. Early Art Deco furniture was exclusive and luxurious, made from costly materials such as hardwoods, lacquer, mother of pearl, shark skin, tortoiseshell and leather, and frequently featured extravagant veneering and inlaid decoration. However, as the style spread, designers employed the latest technologies and less expensive materials, such as stainless steel, chrome and Bakelite plastic. In the States it became known as Streamlining, and its curvy lines were the must-have look for new buildings, with a fine example being the 102-storey Empire State Building, completed in 1931. In terms of furniture, the Art Deco look was low and upright in design, featuring geometric outlines with rounded corners, and often the shell, fan or sunburst shapes that are key to this style. The coffee table and the cocktail cabinet had recently been invented. Fitted kitchens became increasingly widespread, while the Art Deco bathroom featured solid yet elegant shapes and glamorous looks, with plenty of chrome and bevelled-edge mirror.

To decorate walls, botanicals or geometrics were frequent motifs, while upmarket homes might have lacquer or wood panelling, mirror tiles or even trompe l’oeil murals. This was the era of parquet flooring, perhaps with the addition of a zebra skin or a boldly abstract rug. High-end soft furnishings were sumptuous and costly, with silk and velvet desirable. However, as the look filtered down, cotton, chenille and moquette gained in popularity, often featuring graphic patterns in bold colours or monochrome. The arrival of electric light and the widespread use of electric fittings resulted in striking design and the use of ground-breaking materials such as aluminium, plywood, tubular steel, plastic or pressed glass; typical styles included pendant lights made from marbled glass and hung from chains, ziggurat, shell or fan-shaped wall lights, and column-based table lamps boasting Art Deco motifs. Accessories and ornaments were key, from Clarice Cliff ’s ceramics to Bakelite radios, cocktail shakers and silver dressing table sets. Over time Art Deco design became less sophisticated and more mass-produced and, especially in 1930s Britain, more utilitarian and suburban. Though still ground-breaking, it was commercialised to the point of kitsch. House builders included rounded bay windows, doorways with stepped surrounds and garden gates with sunrise motifs. Brightly coloured zigzags, chevrons, exotic animals and stylised flowers were added to furnishings, accessories and homeware – and thus a luxurious look originally available only to the few became an everyday style found in ordinary homes.

Gardening

Tools Of The Trade With the arrival of autumn, there is plenty of maintenance work needed in the garden. Using the right equipment will ensure that jobs are completed as easily and quickly as possible. It really is worth buying as good a quality garden tool as you can afford. Poorly made and badly designed tools can work out a lot more expensive (and frustrating!) in the long run, so start with a few good ones and build up gradually. A good quality fork and spade are essential and they need to be sturdily built. The neck and head of the spade should be moulded from one piece of metal for added strength. The shaft is usually constructed from wood or metal and you should make sure that it is firmly attached at both the head end and the handle. Ensure the metal parts have been treated to prevent rust. A hand fork and trowel are essential for smaller 36

jobs such as weeding or gardening in confined spaces, and they are also great for moving and dividing smaller plants, By Pippa Greenwood for planting bulbs and for mixing up small amounts of compost. It is definitely worth feeling the handle to ensure that that the grip is comfortable. Next decision: stainless steel or coated steel? Stainless steel does not rust and many people find they move through the soil better, but they are pricey. Coated steel tools are much cheaper and provided you keep them clean and oil them periodically and at the end of each season, they last well. You will need a hoe for weeding between small plants and for aerating the surface of the soil. Sharpen your hoe regularly and it will last for ages and slide rapidly and easily through the soil. Most hoes have a 1.5 metre (5 foot) shaft but if you are very tall, then longer ones are available from some manufacturers. My favourite is the SpeedHoe, UK designed and with an unusual almost heart-shaped head with a blade running around all edges and a pronged rear, making it the easiest and most effective hoe I’ve ever used.

Call today for a free quote 07766 545630 • 01489 890893 A spring-tined rake is really useful because it has thin flexible wire tines which make it perfect for raking up lightweight debris and fallen leaves or, of course, lawnmower clippings. Although a garden rake can also be used to rake up leaves, its main purpose is to break up lumps of soil and help you to create a fine level area for sowing seed, whilst at the same time removing stones, lumps and other debris. If you plan to grow vegetables, then a small hoe known as an onion hoe is an invaluable tool and allows you weed between fairly closely spaced crops. For really tight spaces and weeding between paving, I’m addicted to my SpeedWeeder, a small red-handled tool l which is the best I have used for hoiking out dandelion roots in one piece too! Finally, if the tools carry a guarantee then make sure that you keep the receipt and any relevant label from the tool itself or else it may well be difficult to prove precisely when and where you bought it. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com to book Pippa for a gardening talk or peruse Pippa’s favourite gardening items including Nemaslug to control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, pullout EasyTunnels, biocontrols, signed books and lots more.

EXHIBITORS NEEDED FOR CHARITY WEDDING FAYRE Wedding related businesses have a chance to raise their profile and fundraise for a good cause.

being treated within Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust.

Portsmouth Hospitals Charity is holding their annual wedding fayre on Sunday 13 November from 11am – 3pm at the Innlodge Hotel, Burrfields Road, Portsmouth, PO3 5HH.

Portsmouth Hospitals Charity aims to support the patients of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust by improving existing facilities and by providing additional equipment, supporting research programmes and innovation in the development of services and education to both patients and staff.

Last year the wedding fayre saw 65 exhibitors and raised over £4,500 for various wards and departments within Queen Alexandra Hospital. They are looking for exhibitors to be a part of the event and are urging wedding-related businesses to contact the Fundraising Team. Exhibition stands start from £75 and all money raised from this event will benefit the patients 40

The charity supports all of the wards and departments across the Trust and you can choose to support and fundraise for an area of the hospital that is close to your heart. For more information and to book your stand, please contact Jodie on 02392 286000 Ext: 5927 or email fundraising@porthosp.nhs.uk

Recipe

Sweet Potato and Chick Pea Curry

Serves 4 Ready in 45 minutes

A quick and easy vegetarian dish full of Indian flavour. If you don’t have all the spices just use 1-2 tbsp medium curry paste. Serve with boiled basmati rice or warmed naan breads, if liked. • 1 - 2 tbsp vegetable oil • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 3cm piece fresh root ginger, peeled and grated • 1 large onion, peeled and chopped • 1 aubergine, cubed • 2 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp ground turmeric • 2 tsp ground coriander • 1/2 tsp hot chilli powder • 3 medium-sized sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed • 500g carton passata (sieved tomatoes) • 400g can chick peas, drained and rinsed • 1 tsp garam masala • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Freshly chopped coriander, to garnish 42

1. Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the garlic, ginger and onion over a medium heat for about 5 minutes until light golden. Stir in the aubergine and fry for a further 2 minutes. 2. Add all the spices to the pan and cook, stirring, for 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in the sweet potatoes, the passata and 150ml water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes or until the sweet potato is tender and the sauce has thickened.

3. Stir in the chick peas and garam masala and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Simmer for a further few minutes. Serve in warmed bowls garnished with chopped coriander.

TIP

For a chunkier sauce use a 400g can of chopped tomatoes and add 250ml water.

number of polio cases have fallen 99% since 1988, eliminating the final 1% of cases could prove particularly challenging, given that the Taliban has banned vaccinations in parts of those countries that it controls. We must now support the efforts in Pakistan and Afghanistan so they soon join the polio-free world. If you would like to be a part of history and help Rotary achieve a polio-free world, contact us through our website: www.Bishopswalthamrotary.org.uk

Polio Eradication Rotary is a world-wide organisation, and through its world-wide efforts and those of its partners, Rotary has helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries through the Rotary PolioPlus programme. In 1988, polio paralyzed more than 1,000 children worldwide every day and 125 countries were polio-endemic. Rotary started the PolioPlus Programme, to fund and support National Immunization Days in polio-endemic countries, and raised nearly $220 million in contributions. In 2007 Rotary entered into a partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and in 2013 the Gates Foundation offered to match Rotary’s contributions for polio eradication 2-to1 for five years (up to $35 million per year). Since 1988, the global incidence of polio cases has decreased by 99 percent. In March 2014 India was declared polio-free. As of February 2015, Africa had no new cases of wild poliovirus in six months. Polio is now endemic in just two countries: Pakistan and Afghanistan. Although the

Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Awards Bob Glibbery and Colin Carter of Bishop’s Waltham Rotary recently received recognition for their outstanding contributions in support of Rotary. The Paul Harris Fellow recognises outstanding contribution of members and is the highest level of recognition that Rotary can make.

Road Race and Fun Run Despite our best endeavours, we had to cancel this year’s annual Road Race and Fun Run. There is a need for an adjudicator and doctor, and unfortunately the people we had reserved had to back out and we were unable to replace them at this late stage. Our most sincere apologies go to everyone who was looking forward to the race, and also to all the local newspapers and magazines that published details of the race just before it had to be cancelled.
