“Don’t Worry, Be Happy” The summer season is a recipe of mixed emotions, I always think; a dose of relaxation with a touch of anticipation and a dash of trepidation. We pray for good weather but we’re usually disappointed, resorting to be grateful for dry days (that rarely fall on the weekend). Families head abroad for Mediterranean sun, armed with sun cream of all factor levels and gutted when home is treated to a rare heatwave ... how unfair! Our teenagers are free from lessons, kicking their heels yet unknown exam results prey on their minds. School leavers excited about entering the world of employment or university, soon to experience the joys and woes of independence. Fretful times. Or you can make the most of life come rain or shine, make plans regardless of “ifs” and “buts” and heed Billy Connolly’s wise words “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just wrong clothing.” There’s plenty to do in around Southampton, the New Forest, the beach and the Downs; so get out there and have fun! You never know, we could be in for an Indian summer!

THE DINER AND CARLUCCIO’S MAKE SOUTHAMPTON DEBUT Hammerson announces that it has attracted two new restaurateurs to Southampton with Carluccio's set to open at WestQuay shopping centre and The Diner opening at WestQuay Watermark, the £85 million leisure-led development. It is the first time in the city for both brands, and the first location for The Diner outside of London. The new 372 m2 Carluccio's will be situated in a prime location on the lower shopping level of WestQuay, alongside M&S and John Lewis's popular espresso bar, as well as other premium brands such as Karen Millen, Coast and Pandora. The popular Italian restaurant is due to open in the summer. The Diner will occupy a 584m2 unit located on the lower promenade of WestQuay Watermark, adjoining Waterstones in WestQuay. The brand adds to the strong line of restaurants already signed up to open at the scheme, including Bill's, Jamie's

Italian and Red Dog Saloon, as well as Hollywood Bowl, All Bar One, and TGI Fridays which were confirmed as new tenants earlier this month. WestQuay has a strong track record in attracting leading retailers and restaurant brands to Southampton, with global and national brands like Victoria's Secret and Jack Wills, all making their entrance to the popular student and tourist city with Hammerson. And further to the launch of WestQuay's leisure extension at the end of the year, this will cement the centre's position as the leading retail, dining and leisure destination in the region. Comfort, Heat Protection, Security and Style: Why you should use Glass Film Conservatories People spend thousands of pounds on a new conservatory, only to find that it gets too hot and uncomfortable to use during the summer months. But there is a solution: solar control window film reduces the direct heat and glare from the sun by up to 80%. At about a third of the cost of roof blinds – and considerably easier to keep clean - window film is a more efficient and cost effective solution. Solar film is suitable for both glass and polycarbonate roofs. Sun Damage Solar control film is a very effective way of protecting your floors and fabrics against the damaging effects of the sun. Ultra violet light is the main culprit, so by filtering it out, the fading process will be slowed down considerably. Heat and natural light are also a factor, so for increased protection, various levels of tint are available to suit every situation. Safety and Security Specialist films will strengthen

your glass and hold it together in case of impact. An application of clear safety film will bring any older glass in your home up to European standards whilst security film reinforces your glazing in case of intruders. Both films are designed to give you piece of mind knowing that your home is safe. Privacy If privacy is an issue, then then it’s worth considering silver reflective film that gives a ‘one way effect’ or frosted film that allows plenty of light to pass through whilst maintaining your modesty! Or for a more elegant solution, you could choose a decorative window film adding colour, vibrancy and privacy to your room. A modern alternative to net curtains. Oakmount Installations offers a supply and fit service for all these applications, with 15 years of experience. Conservatory Roof Film: wish I’d done it years ago! Tania Houston, Director, Discover Magazines Our house was built with a small conservatory at the back. For the whole 18 years we’ve lived there, that room has been almost unusable from April to September – it’s too hot, and it’s too bright. I’d considered roof blinds in the past, but insects and dust love conservatories and it’s not easy cleaning blinds at roof height. So when I saw Oakmount 46 12

Installations advertising roof film to reduce heat and light, I booked straight away. I love the finished result. There’s still plenty of light coming into the room (the picture of the work in progress makes it look much darker than it is) but when the sun is out, the light level is more

Work underway - first 3 panels complete

like a cloudy day. We’ve had a couple of warm spells since April and I really noticed such a difference. Not only is the room more usable, but there’s less heat going into the rest of the house. Highly recommended!

INTERVIEW

ABC

34 years after ABC’s the Lexicon Of Love was released, frontman Martin Fry is back with the sequel, Lexicon Of Love II. The Breeze’s Mark Franklin caught up with him. I love the story about why you decided to make this album and I’d like you to tell it if you wouldn’t mind? The Lexicon Of Love was our debut album with ‘The Look Of Love’ and ‘Poison Arrow’ on it and ABC has made many albums over the years. I was playing a show at the Albert Hall in London with Anne Dudley conducting the orchestra and we were doing orchestral versions of The Lexicon Of Love. It was such a magical night – I was looking into the audience and did start to think ‘wouldn’t it be good to do a follow-up’. Then I started thinking how I love sequels. I had a couple of songs that I’d written which we slipped into the set the next time we played, and they went down a storm. I kind of thought, The Lexicon Of Love II would be unapologetically ABC and I could make it very big, orchestral and lavish without any guilt whatsoever. It’s a 14

record about today but one that doffs its cap to the old days. Were you consciously trying to sonically have it almost compare to the original – or were you trying to move it away? Sonically, I didn’t want to go back to the minutiae of a Yamaha DX-7 keyboard from 1983 and try to recreate that but I did want to reference the original album and take it forwards. The editing and sampling are things you can do on a laptop today and I figured it would be great to get a real orchestra, and a real drum kit, and a real bass guitar and cut them all up – today I think that is what most people do. Although not everybody has real strings so as a sort of pre-condition, I felt it had to be more orchestral. The first single is Viva Love. It’s a massive powerhouse of a song. Just tell me about that. With Viva Love, I wanted to capture the feeling you get when you get up in the morning and feel that life is full of possibilities – that is often the feeling you get when you’re in love – but I wanted to capture some of the euphoria and the ecstasy. It would be remiss of me not to look at your back catalogue. For example, ‘Be Near Me’ - love that song!

Yeah it’s our biggest seller and it’s a song we rarely play in the UK. But in America, it’s the encore song. It came out of an album called ‘How To Be A Zillionaire’ and at that point in our career, we decided to become cartoon characters. We decided to be like Hanna Barbera! It’s a very romantic song but in an electronic setting. Mark: Poison Arrow? It’s a pretty spiteful song, really! “Who broke my heart, you did, you did” - I can’t really count the number of times I’ve pointed deep into the heart of the audience on that moment but now they all point back at me! It’s pretty heartful and anguished, but love is a many splintered thing!

BEAUTY

SUMMER LOVIN’

It’s been a very long time coming, but summer is finally here. I’ve dusted off the sunnies and dug out my sandals, but couldn’t resist investing in a few new goodies…

A new lip gloss is always on my summer shopping list. This year I’ve gone for Neal’s Yard’s organic Lip Gloss in Fig, £9.50. It’s rich in seed and fruit oils, so nourishes lips while giving them a decent burst of colour. It’s easy to apply and also has a subtle orange flavour and scent. Being a gloss, the colour doesn’t last that long, but it does leave my lips feeling moisturised.

Next on my list is a new makeup palette. I like one that I can keep in my bag then whip out when there’s talk of cocktails. Marks and Spencer’s Autograph Face Palette ticks all the boxes. There are nine eyeshadows, two blushers and four highlighters, so it can take my look from day to night with ease. What’s more, it’s housed in a cute metallic clutch bag, which you can detach from the palette and use on its own. A bargain at just £15.

Now I am not normally a fan of nettles. I seem to be forever getting stung by them when retrieving a football out of the long grass or trailing after my dog through the woods. But they do have some good qualities. Nettles are packed with amino acids and proteins, so can help to strengthen your hair. You can make an effective hair rinse by steeping leaves in hot water, but if that sounds like a bit too much effort, try Paul Mitchell’s Super Strong System. This three-step hair care range uses nettles and other botanical ingredients to strengthen hair, add shine and prevent sun damage. I’ve been using it for a few weeks now and am suitably impressed.

16

I am incredibly lazy when it comes to body lotion, so don’t tend to use it as much as I should when I’m covered up in the winter. So once summer hits, my legs are a bit of a sorry sight. I’ve been tackling them with daily exfoliation, followed by Believa’s Natural Intensiv Body Lotion, £23.99. It’s packed with argan oil, aloe vera, jojoba and shea butter, so is incredibly moisturising. Thankfully it’s also easily absorbed, as I’m usually running late for the school run. Natural Intensiv is very gentle, so is suitable for allergy sufferers, and may help with eczema and other dry skin complaints.

British fragrance house Atkinsons is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. To celebrate, and mark the Queen’s 90th birthday year, it has launched a new perfume, Oud Save the Queen. Inspired by the Orient, this fragrance is bursting with spicy, exotic notes, including bergamot, jasmine, orange blossom and, of course, oud. However, there are also notes of the quintessentially British Earl Grey tea. This fragrance is on my wish list, rather than shopping list, unfortunately, as it’s an eye watering £150.

JACKS OF LONDON KICKS OFF AT NEW VENUE The future of English football met the future of sharp barbering as Jacks of London celebrated the opening in Southampton of its latest venue. More than 150 guests packed the stylish new Jacks of London premises on Above Bar Street for a party that kicked off a weekend of special events at Jacks, coinciding with the opening games in the Euro 2016 championships. Prominent faces included local Under-18s footballing rising star Harvey Read. After two seasons in the Southampton youth squad, Harvey recently transferred to Stoke City, where he is now a squadmate of Jacks of London’s recently signed brand ambassador, Stoke and England goalie Jack Butland. Already a leading name in men’s grooming around the M25 area, with barbershops in Guildford, Kingston and Wimbledon, Jacks is one of the smartest barbering brands to come out of London. Sue Whitehead, Jacks of London’s managing director, said Southampton was a natural choice for the barber group’s expansion. She said: ‘We were looking for somewhere that had a certain

style and a vibrant city centre, and Southampton fitted the bill perfectly. It’s got a great feel with a lot of guys who we know will appreciate the unique blend of contemporary and traditional styling Jacks is famed for.’ She added: ‘All Jacks barbers are fully trained in traditional barbering methods, but brought right up to date to ensure they deliver the best service possible. And we aim to make all our barbershops about much more than getting a Saturday morning haircut. With the opportunity to come in and sample our cool ambience, take a place on the sofa and watch live sports, maybe with a cold beer, Jacks is a great place to just hang out for a while.’ www.jacksoflondon.co.uk ABOUT JACKS OF LONDON Founded in 1995, Jacks has just celebrated its 20th birthday, making it one of the original gentlemen barber groups to bring fashionstarved, salon-shy gents a perfect balance of traditional and contemporary. Replete with huge comfy sofas and live sports coverage, Jacks’ shops have been the place to hang out on Saturday, or any other time, for two generations.

HAMPSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL’S BURSARY SCHEME LEADS THE WAY IN SUPPORTING NEXT GENERATION OF CHARTERED CIVIL ENGINEERS Hampshire County Council is proudly the first local authority in England to join forces with the University of Southampton on the SUCCESS scholarship scheme, which provides an annual bursary, summer work placements, an industrial mentor and possible long-term employment after graduation. The County Council is also working with the University of Portsmouth which has set up a new bursary scheme. After regional applications, the latest intake of four students has been welcomed by the County Council’s Economy, Transport and Environment Department. James Bragg is 22, and is in the third year of his Civil Engineering Masters at the University of Portsmouth. James explained: “I’ve already done one year in industry with a County Council, but I like the Hampshire area which is what appealed to me. When I found out about the bursary, I jumped at the chance.” “I’ve also already completed a placement with the Highways team where I was able to go on several site visits as well as working on computer aided design drawings and feasibility studies which was really interesting.” A huge strength of the bursary scheme is the mentoring aspect which is available. Each individual is assigned their own mentor who is already well-advanced on the ICE training scheme with the County Council. Commenting on this unique offer, James said: “My mentor has already provided me with support for my dissertation on drainage, Him sharing his knowledge with me is a real bonus.” Kachinga Shamboko, 22, is the only female of the 2016-17 intake and is in the second year of her Masters in Civil Engineering at the University of Portsmouth. 22

She explained: “Being sponsored is great, as it means there is a one-year placement as well as summer placements which gives us hands-on, valuable industry experience, every academic year. The mentoring aspect of the bursary is a good thing as our mentors are already applying the skills they have learnt and passing them on to us. Plus, I like the fact that I can already start ticking off some of the requirements for the ICE training as I go along.” Mike Ellis is 20 and is in the first year of his Civil Engineering Masters at the University of Portsmouth. Mike explained what appealed to him about the County Council scheme. He said: “I like that the scheme will give me guaranteed industry experience and potential job security and progression after graduation - that’s a huge positive. Another great thing about the scheme is that we can work towards gaining our chartered engineering status, which means that we get the industry recognition.” Adam Hood is the youngest of the intake at 19, and is in the first year of his Civil Engineering Masters at the University of Southampton. He explained: “I applied for the bursary via the SUCCESS scholarship scheme which had been flagged to me at open days and during Freshers’ week. I then met with various sponsor organisations but I knew that when I met with the Hampshire County Council team, that it was a place I wanted to work. I’m looking forward to carrying out site visits and I’m especially interested in bridges and highways.” All four students are due to start their placements shortly. After graduating, the students may be offered long-term employment and the chance to join the County Council’s accredited ICE Graduate Trainee Scheme to enable them to attain professional membership level of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

HOME INTERIORS

STORAGE SOLUTIONS FOR EVERY ROOM SELL: Well-designed storage makes an enormous difference to our homes, so interiors expert Katherine Sorrell takes us through some room-by-room ideas. Our homes are full of stuff, and each room requires specific solutions. You could do this yourself, plotting on graph paper where doors, windows, radiators and other furnishings will go, making use of ‘dead’ spaces such as under stairs or sloping ceilings, the alcoves either side of a chimney breast or the space below a bay window. Alternatively, interior designers can create an overall ‘look’, but should understand space planning, while architects are suited to more extensive works that involve extensions or alterations, and can help to make the most of your space.

Hammonds Harpsden wardrobes in ivory, Hammonds Furniture, tel. 0800 021 4360; www.hammonds-uk.com.

Living rooms Often the public face of a home, the living room is where you’ll show off treasured possessions whilst concealing less attractive items, so to cope with these twin demands build in storage that includes open shelving and/or display niches as well as cupboards. A central chimney breast with alcoves either side is ideal for shelving above and cupboards below, or run a long, low cupboard along one wall – perhaps incorporating a fireplace or TV in the centre – the top of which can serve as seating or display space. If two rooms have been knocked into one there may be space for shelving or cupboards over the central double doors, or in a small room it may be possible to fit shelving above or around the door or the windows. Halls Hallway storage is all about organisation – slimline furniture such as console tables or storage benches works well. For a variety of storage types, supplement coat hooks behind the door with shoe racks at the bottom, an umbrella hook, and a shelf at the top. Alternatively, it may be possible to build an under-stair cupboard, kitted out with hooks, shelves and racks.

Cooke & Lewis Santini Gloss white fitted bathroom furniture; Cooke & Lewis at B&Q, tel. 0333 014 3098; www.diy.com. 28

Bathrooms Custom-made floor and wall cabinets are ideal for storing toiletries and spare towels,

keeping surfaces clear, while vanity units with shelves, drawers and cabinets can be built around sanitaryware to cover up pipe work. Alternatively, consider free-standing options such as dressers, cupboards and chests, and wall-mounted pieces like shelves, racks and mirrored cupboards. Pipe runs can be hidden behind false walls of studwork and plasterboard, within which you can punch shallow shelves and cupboards. Do the same when building a shower wall and create niches in which to store shampoos and soaps. Bedrooms There are four ways to fit out a bedroom: use free-standing pieces that you can take with you when you move (but probably won’t be space efficient); find a carpenter or joiner to make a bespoke room; use a fittedfurniture specialist, whose ranges often feature ingenious storage solutions; or use inexpensive, off-the-shelf elements from DIY shops or

storage specialists, and make it up yourself. It’s a question of working out what best suits you, your property and your pocket. Children’s rooms Raised beds with storage underneath are great for storing clothes or toys. Drawers should be easy to open, but with stops that prevent them from sliding right out. Use large boxes, baskets or cupboards for bigger toys, and smaller containers for things like Lego, toy soldiers and paints. Form playroom storage, featuring Form Konnect 1x1 cubes, £10; Form floating shelves, from £5; and Form photo shelves, £10. B&Q, tel. 0333 014 3098; www.diy.com.

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company

policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Southampton

area and manager Justin Friel agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

GARDENING

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE By Pippa Greenwood

With summer well under way, gardens will need more water than the rain is giving them, but how can you minimise the amount you apply, make best use of what you’ve got and still have a goodlooking and productive garden? If possible, wait until the autumn to plant out trees, shrubs and climbers – it will be far harder for them to establish properly now and they are more likely to suffer serious setbacks. However, if you can’t avoid planting, improve the soil texture by digging and forking in plenty of garden compost, well-rotted manure or other bulky organic matter so that the soil is better equipped to retain moisture – sandy soil will then hold water more effectively whilst clay soil is less likely to crack. It may be hard work but it will make life a lot easier for the plants, and means you will spend far less time watering later on. It is still well worthwhile mulching beds, borders and your vegetable plot. The mulch needs to be 2” - 3” (5 - 7.5 cm) deep and you can use shredded composted bark, composted chipped bark, cocoa shells or many of the numerous pebbles, shingles and so forth which are now available. If the soil is well watered before the mulch goes on, then it will really help to keep moisture in the soil and, as all the materials I’ve suggested will let plenty of rain through, 42

when it does rain the plants will still benefit. Mulching will also help to keep down weeds. In drier areas of your garden, try to use drought tolerant plants. Those with silvery or grey foliage such as the lavenders, Sedums (ice plants), rock roses (Helianthemum), rosemary and Convolvulus cneorum all tend to thrive in dry conditions, and are also more likely to do quite well if planted now. Make the most of any rainfall by fitting a water diverter to the drain pipe which

takes water from the guttering from your greenhouse, house, conservatory or garage, and divert the rain straight into one or more water butts. You can also fit a water diverter to the downpipe which takes water from your bath, hand basin or kitchen sink. Normal amounts of shampoo, bubble bath and washing up liquid should pose no threats to plants, and these detergents may help with pest problems such as greenfly. Unless there’s no alternative, always water in the evening or extremely early in the morning, which drastically reduces the amount of water lost through evaporation, and means that there is far less chance of

foliage or flowers getting scorched - as can happen if they are wetted in bright sunlight. Where possible use a watering can or hose with a gentle nozzle attachment and water only the areas where the water is needed. If the soil is very dry before you start to water, then sprinkle the surface gently with a light drizzling of water and return a few minutes later - you will find that the water penetrates down to the roots much more effectively. Excessive watering on a very dry surface is likely to lead to a lot of run off and wastage.

MARINATED PEPPER PLATTER A really summery platter of grilled peppers with sun-dried tomatoes and mozzarella pearls. Make a day in advance and chill in the fridge until required. Serve with crusty bread for a simple starter or as part of a summer buffet. Serves 6 as a starter or part of a buffet Ready in 1 hour, plus marinating 6 mixed red, yellow and orange peppers 1 x 280g jar sun-dried tomatoes in oil 2 x 125g tubs mozzarella pearls, drained 2 tbsp capers, drained and rinsed Salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 tbsp balsamic oil Handful fresh basil leaves, shredded TIP Instead of mozzarella try another cheese, such as crumbled feta or slices of Brie or Camembert. 1. Halve all the peppers, leaving the stalks on. Remove and discard the pith and seeds. Place all the peppers, skin-side up, on a grill pan and grill under a moderate heat for 7-8 minutes, until the skins are blistered and charred in places. Leave until cool enough to handle, then peel off as much of the skin from each pepper as you can. 2. Place all the grilled peppers, cut-side up, on a large platter. Drain and roughly

chop the sun-dried tomatoes (reserving the oil). Fill each pepper half with some of the tomatoes, along with the mozzarella pearls and capers. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 3. Mix the reserved sun dried tomato oil with the balsamic vinegar and pour over and around the peppers. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for a few hours or overnight.
