Come and be thrilled at the Romsey Show The Romsey Show, this year taking place on Saturday 12th September, certainly knows how to entertain the crowds. As well as a spectacular lineup of events, attractions, demonstrations and a stunning array of animals, the main ring attractions are going to include Jason Smyth with his Adrenaline Tour, one of the UK’s leading quad bike and motorbike stunt riders who provides an unrivalled display of tricks and Patrick Kempe, who will be showcasing the wonderful Iberian horses and riders all in appropriate saddlery and costume. Inspired by a stunt team he saw over 15 years ago, Jason Smyth set up the Adrenaline Tour in 2003 and has been addicted to the buzz ever since. With over 25 years of riding experience Jason is now challenging his stunt skills riding quad bikes and he is really looking forward to performing at the Romsey Show. He promises a sensational and awe-inspiring Show where the crowds will see him fly over 30 feet high, and 70 feet from ramp to ramp whilst
performing breathtaking aerial tricks. He will quad freestyle, catching items of memorabilia in mid-air and then awarding them to spectators, as well as the ever popular street style tricks where the action is brought close to the crowd. Jason also does an informative and humorous commentary via a microphone in his helmet as he does his stunts! He interacts with the audience even whilst flying 70 feet through the air to really get them involved in the show but the entertainment doesn’t end there. He also has a display unit where the public are encouraged to come and see the machines, chat with the team and even sit on one of the quad bikes if they wish. The other main ring attraction on hand to wow the crowd is Patrick Kempe who is going to kick the Show off to a flying start with his Iberian horses for a one-off performance. A team of Spanish and Portuguese Lusitano horses will be put through their paces showing the crowds traditional
tack and colourful costumes. The commentator will explain the whole display in an informative and entertaining way. Visitors will see young horses in the early stages of their training, advanced horses floating across the surface, forwards, sideways and backwards. The show will feature some work with the garrocha (the long pole used for rounding up cattle) and there will be a very jolly fellow who may need some help from the spectators. Once decorum has returned, you will be treated to the ever popular Flight of the Flags. It’s a full day of fun for all the family so make sure you don’t miss out! There is free car parking with a shuttle train to the entrance and there is free entry for children under 11. If you are born and bred in the UK (or have lived here for a long time) you sort of get used to the weather (although it doesn’t stop us moaning about it). But anyone visiting or coming to live here must find it quite hard to understand how we tolerate it. My father is 79 and returning to his roots after 48 years abroad; 45 of those were living in South Africa and the Sunshine State of Florida. Although he claims his days of sunbathing are over, the continuous downpours this August worry me enough to hear he’s reconsidered his decision! It’s often only when we have visitors or family coming to stay that we research what to do and where to go but much of our charm is regular life we take for granted; quaint thatched cottages in picture postcard villages, bridleways with right of access in miles of beautiful countryside, traditional pubs that welcome children and dogs and in my father’s case, advert free television! Equally, when we leave the comfort of our homes and travel to countries with economies less healthy than ours in the UK we appreciate more than just a good cup of English tea (note to self - pack Tetley tea bags next time); the facilities on our doorstep are fantastic. Southampton attracts West End shows (see p10 for The Mayflower) and there’s a host of family days out such as those listed on page 16. There’s always room for improvement so take a peak at what could be in store at our Waterfront on page 15.

INTERVIEW
The Full Monty Former Hollyoaks and Eastenders star Gary Lucy is no stranger to taking his clothes off but he’s doing it for the first time on stage as he leads the cast of THE FULL MONTY which is coming to The Mayflower Theatre from 2nd November 2015 for one week only. “Every job I’ve had has seemed to involve some sort of nudity!” Gary joked. Surprisingly, in an almost 20 year career, Gary has never appeared on stage until The Full Monty. “I had never consciously decided not to do theatre but I’ve been incredibly lucky in my career to have played so many memorable characters in some great TV series. When the producers of The Full Monty approached me about starring in the tour, I just thought that it was a great opportunity for my first stage experience. It’s a really strong script. All the characters have stories to tell, and the audience really follows that through. It’s a really great cast too, we all get on well. It’s all guys together and we’re just having a laugh.”
10
At the beginning, it was in at the deep end for Gary. “It was a real challenge when I first started working on the show. Theatre is a completely different discipline to TV. I’m on stage for pretty much the entire show. The rest of the cast were brilliant and really helped me through. I’m not one to do things by half and I’ve never shied away from hard work or a challenge.” Gary’s well into the swing of life on the road and is enjoying the nightly standing ovations but he does admit that “it’s tough being away from home as I have two young kids but I am really well supported and I am getting home as much as possible.” Oscar winning writer of the film, Simon Beaufoy, was also a stage novice. Even with a mantelpiece groaning with awards he admits that it was terrifying to begin with, but he was determined not just to do a carbon copy of the film on stage. “I felt really strongly that audiences would want to come and see a really good play so that’s how I approached it” Simon recalls. “It was a steep learning curve for me and enormously invigorating to learn a whole new craft after 16 years writing for the cinema. I had to discover
what works and what doesn’t. Ironically, it’s turned out that the story feels perfect on stage. It’s an ensemble piece about a group of men who are stuck and wondering what to do next.” Having won an Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire and written screenplays for 127 Hours, Salmon Fishing in Yemen and Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Simon says that The Full Monty is “the film that I’m most proud off. I love it because of the characters, because of the city and because it’s about the people I met in the late eighties, who were some of the warmest and kindest people I’ve ever come across.”
22-26 Commercial Rd, Southampton, SO15 1GE The Full Monty By Oscar Winner Simon Beaufoy Based on the Fox Searchlight Pictures motion picture Gary Lucy will lead a cast that includes Andrew Dunn, Louis Emerick, Rupert Hill, Martin Miller And Bobby Schofield in 2-7 November 2015 Box Office 02380 711811

RECIPE
Halloween Macaroons
For the ultimate Halloween sweet treat why not have a go at making a batch of French Macaroons? Makes 16 Ready in 1 hour, plus cooling 230g icing sugar, sifted 75g ground almonds 2 large egg whites 50g caster sugar Orange and black food colouring gel 55g unsalted butter, softened ½ tsp vanilla extract TIP The filled macaroons will keep in an airtight box in the fridge for 2-3 days. Stand at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving.
1. Place half the icing sugar and all the ground almonds in a food processor and process for 30 seconds, or until fine and powdery. Sift the mixture into a mixing bowl, discarding any tiny pieces of almonds left in the sieve. Set aside. 2. Whisk the egg whites in a large bowl until softly peaking. Gradually whisk in the caster sugar, to make a firm and glossy meringue. Whisk in enough of the orange food colouring gel to colour the meringue deep orange. 3. Fold one third of the icing sugar mixture into the meringue using a spatula. Repeat with another third of the mixture. Finally add the last third and continue to cut and fold the mixture until it forms a shiny and thick batter that falls in a slow ribbon when the spatula is lifted. 4. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. Spoon the mixture into a large piping bag fitted with a 1cm plain piping nozzle. Pipe 32 discs of the mixture onto the baking sheets, each with a diameter of 3cm. Lift the nozzle at the
12
top of half the piped discs to create a small point. Leave for 30 minutes to allow the macaroons to dry and form a slight crust. Preheat the oven to 160°C / Fan 140°C / Gas Mark 3. 5. Bake, one sheet at a time for 10-15 minutes, or until the macaroons have a crisp shell and the frilly bases don’t stick when gently lifted from the paper. Leave on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then carefully transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool completely. 6. To decorate, dip the tip of a fine paintbrush into the black food colouring gel and paint pumpkin faces on the 16 pointed macaroons. 7. To make the filling, beat the butter, remaining icing sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth and creamy. Place all the undecorated macaroon shells flat-side up on a board. Pipe a small mound of the buttercream onto each shell then gently sandwich together with a decorated shell, pressing down gently.

Royal Pier Waterfront Proposal by Lucent Group Developers Lucent Group are planning to link Southampton’s Old Town with a vibrant and attractive new waterfront quarter created as a prime destination for residents and visitors alike. The vision for the new Royal Pier Waterfront promises to deliver the most atmospheric urban waterfront experience on the South Coast, giving unprecedented access to the city’s water-side and celebrating Southampton’s unique heritage links with land, sea and sky. Royal Pier Waterfront will include around 730 contemporary apartments; a major new 47,000 sq m (about 500,000 sq ft) high quality office development; 40-50 new shops, waterside restaurants, cafes and bars plus a gourmet Epicurean Market; a 250-bed, 4-5-star signature hotel and spa; a large casino with leisure and entertainment facilities (subject to licencing decisions); a civic,

The ambitious development will include a network of attractive routes for pedestrians and cyclists to connect the city with the waterfront, and a range of high quality public spaces and squares where people can enjoy time next to the waterfront overlooking new boat moorings, marine activities and views across the Solent. At the heart of the plan is an enhanced Mayflower Park to provide a landmark recreational asset for the city throughout the year. The regeneration plan will also provide new first class facilities for the Isle of Wight ferry operator Red Funnel which will be relocated to Trafalgar Dock. 15

INTERVIEW
Mika After a worldwide hit with ‘Grace Kelly’ back in 2007, Mika is back with a brand new album. Lucy Ambache caught up with him on the Evening Breeze and talked about everything from speed dating to opera.
Great to have you back. You have a voice that you recognise straight away. It’s that high singing thing that you do. How did that come about? Did you study operatics? I did! I studied classical music and I went to music college - I wanted to be an opera singer. So when you sing classically, you aren’t afraid of using all those different parts of your voice. But also I write at the piano but I’m a really simplistic piano player - I kind of use it as a percussion instrument. So to tell a story I had to use my voice - and that’s why I use those different areas. So the new album is called ‘No Place In Heaven’. What’s happening? Are we all going to hell here? No! But you know what they say. Paradise is good for the view. Is there room for you in heaven? The company’s better in hell! But why is it called that!
Mika’s new single is ‘All She Wants’ and is out on the 4th of September. 18
When you’re thirty years old, you have to take hold of your life. But before you’re thirty, things are kind of written for you - you go to school and then you work. But from the age of thirty everyone looks at you and goes “now it’s time for you to completely write it yourself”. Nothing’s decided for you and you need to work out what kind
of adult you hope and wish to become in the future. But the title is just a provocation. If there’s no place in heaven, it forces me to take account for my present life and to live every day as if it’s my last. It’s a coming of age thing, in a way. Tell us about the single ‘Talk About You’ You know when everyone says “oh it’s a really happy love song”. It doesn’t exist. There are no happy love songs. They’re always complicated. Love is complicated. Talk About You is joyful because it’s about a crush! Have you ever done speed dating? No. Well. Unintentionally. Because you think you’re going out on a normal date, but it’s really short - and people just leave! But normal speaking - I think it would be a disaster. Are you single? No I’m not so it’s not really on the cards. I had to go speed dating once with a couple of male friends and they met women they really liked. And the last scene of the night is me sitting between them and they are with their new women. How long did those relationships last? Are we talking months, weeks or hours? Probably the latter!

Want to be Your Own Boss? It’s Decision Time The reasons why people buy a business to work for themselves rather than work for someone else are many and varied. For some it’s no upper income limit. You’ll be in charge. For others, it’s not having someone else telling them what to do and how to do it. You can choose the clients you serve and the type of jobs to take on. You decide what hours you work, a major benefit if you have childcare responsibilities. On top of all this you can take advantage of our tax regulations for the self-employed; control every pound of profit you make. You decide how much to pay yourself, not your employer. Employees can feel frustrated when they hit the top of their salary scale and find their role no longer challenges them. Some find this all an exciting prospect, others are nervous of stepping outside their comfort zone but ask many business owners and most have have no regrets. The First Big Decision You can start up from scratch but many choose to buy an established business so you can identify the weaknesses and make significant changes; effectively putting your own stamp on it. It’s hard work and you will have to make sacrifices when the going gets tough but you’ll always feel the success or failure of the business is down to you. Removing the threat of losing your job will allow you to be more creative, try new things, experiment a little. There are risks associated with buying a going concern especially when it comes to valuation but with the right advice from the right people you will dramatically increase your chances of success. Decisions involving your income and the future of your family deserve careful investigation and professional support.

Free smoke alarm giveaway for landlords Private landlords across Hampshire are being given the opportunity to apply for free smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in the wake of new laws that will aim to save lives.
The new rules state that all private landlords must install a smoke alarm on each floor as well as a carbon monoxide detector in rooms with a solid fuel appliance, which includes wood burners and open fires. Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging all landlords to act now to ensure they are ready for new legislation which is aimed at saving dozens of lives a year. Failure to comply could result in penalties of up to £5000. To help landlords gear up for the new regulations the Government has provided Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service with more than 13,000 smoke alarms and over a thousand carbon monoxide
detectors, to give out to landlords that house vulnerable tenants. Steve Foye, Head of Community Safety said: “While deaths and injuries from fires have reduced considerably in recent years, the majority of victims continue to be those who are most vulnerable, often living in private rented accommodation.” Statistically people are four times more likely to die in a fire in the home if there is no working smoke alarm and over the next 10 years it is estimated that the new laws will result in 231 fewer deaths and 5,860 less injuries. For more information and to apply for a free appliance please visit www.hantsfire.gov.uk/rented-homes

BEAUTY
Shades of Autumn By Kate Duggan
This issue we’re looking at make-up, including the key trends for autumn/winter. As your tan fades, you may find that you want slightly more foundation. ’Contouring’ is the art of using different shades to add definition to your face. Lighter tones highlight areas and make them stand out slightly, while darker tones add shadow and depth. If you’ve been thinking of trying contouring, but are worried that it will take hours, or make you look a bit fake, read on for our cheat’s guide…
Cheek Colore, £28, is a good choice. Available in five shades, including a natural looking coral, it’s easy to apply, blends well and lasts for ages. Colorescience is available from www.beautyproduct-online.co.uk
Start with an overall base that’s the same tone as your natural skin, before adding slightly darker shades under your cheekbones and along your jawline. Use a lighter shade on top of the cheekbones, under the eyes and between your eyebrows. And don’t forget to blend well! If you’re still not convinced, try searching online for video tutorials. MAC has some great ones on its website, for example. When it comes to the product itself, a cream tends to give a fresher appearance. Iconic London’s Multi Use Cream Contour Palette, £32.99, is a good choice, as it has several easy-toapply shades in one kit, which also double-up as eyeshadows. If you don’t fancy contouring, but do want to add a touch of colour to your cheeks, Colorescience Pressed Mineral
26
Statement lips don’t have to be red. We love Bobbi Brown’s new Lip Trio in Twilight Glow, £39 – the perfect shade for autumn. One of the key looks for this season is ‘polished’. Think sophisticated, ‘grownup’ make-up. The Lip Trio is perfect for this, as it gives you perfectly defined lips, with just a hint of gloss.
Victoriana looks set to become another one of this season’s key looks. Forget soft romantic frills though; this is Victoriana with an edge. Think dark, gothic eroticism. If you don’t fancy going the whole shebang, you can dip your toe (or fingertip) in the water with a dark red or purple nail varnish. We like Vamp by HJ Manicure, which is £9.50 and doesn’t contain the strong chemicals often found in nail polishes, such as formaldehyde and dibutyl phthalate.
Want to master the perfect autumnal smokey eye? Neal’s Yard Remedies tells us how*: Apply a tawny brown shadow over the entire eyelid and up into the socket line using a medium eyeshadow brush. Apply to the lower lash line with a small eyeshadow brush. Using a medium brush, apply a dark hazelnut shade to the outer corner of the lid and blend into the crease of the socket line. Blend the colours using soft back and forth strokes. Apply dark brown mascara. Press a dark chocolate eyeliner into the eyelash roots, moving along the upper lash line. Go over this with a precise line, staying close to the lashes. Draw eyeliner along the lower lash line from the outer to the inner corner. * Taken, with permission, from Neal’s Yard Remedies’ new Beauty Book.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southampton area and Justin is finding that his approach is
a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done
work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

GARDENING
Leaf Litter By Pippa Greenwood
Are you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? Whether they come from trees in your own garden or from a neighbour, the deluge of leaves that falls in autumn is often enough to get level headed, treeloving gardeners eyeing up chainsaws!
At this time of year most of us are feeling as if we are being buried alive by falling leaves. Yes, the vast majority of leaves that are dropping from our own and our neighbours’ trees are pretty enough, and for a while their bright reds, yellows and oranges look stunning both on and off the tree. The problem is that it seems as if there is a virtually endless supply of them and after that initial flurry of pretty colour, the positive feeling soon starts to diminish. Leaves that are allowed to build up in your garden can cause problems - on the lawn they smother the turf grasses, often causing patches of die back, largely due to lack of light and oxygen. If the crowns of the less tough herbaceous perennials or alpines are covered in a soggy blanket of leaves, they too start to deteriorate. So, like it or not, you need to do something - and the sooner you get started the better! A spring-tined rake is perfect for raking leaves off the lawn, and can even work quite well on a gravel drive (provided you don’t rake too deeply and end up ploughing up the stones too!). If you have a lot of lawn or a lot of leaves (or worse still, a big lawn and lots of leaves too) then the
36
easiest way to deal with them is to mow the lawn. Provided you keep the hopper or grasscollector on the mower, when you empty it out you’ll have a fantastic mix of grass clippings and chopped leaves. On beds and borders you’ll usually end up hand picking, or if time and energy is in short supply you could invest in a leaf vacuum or a leaf blower (and this can, of course, be used on most drives and paths, and lawns too). Great, so you spend a lot of time and effort collecting up all these leaves. Then what? Don’t take them to the tip or make a bonfire: make leaf mould. It is as easy as anything and makes a fantastic soil mulch or conditioner…for free! Leaves are best rotted down on their own (they take longer to decompose than the rest of the stuff in your compost heap and need less air and warmth), so make yourself a simple and inexpensive leaf mould bin. Just drive four stakes into the ground to make the corners of a square, and then attach chicken mesh around the outside to make a cage. Stack the leaves in, tread or firm them, add some water if they are dry, then more water if the weather remains dry…
and then leave them be. If you can chop larger or tougher leaves (like horse chestnut) up first, they’ll rot down much faster - either mow them with the lawnmower or ‘chop’ them with a sharp spade. It is worth avoiding very spiky leaves (the spines seem to withstand rotting and get you later!), and any that are very leathery and tough - mainly evergreens such as holly, laurel and camellia, or those from sycamore and plane. If you want to speed the process up you can add a leaf mould
activator, which is available from garden centres. If space, time or money is short then you can also make leaf mould in a bin liner or other bag. Choose a good quality bin liner - not a really thin one - and cram it full of leaves, again adding water and/or activator if you wish. Then stab a few holes in the bag with a garden fork, loosely fold over the top and weigh it down with a brick. Bin liners full of leaves can be hidden anywhere that you have the space - perhaps behind the
shed, garage or greenhouse. If you don’t like the idea of black plastic, then there are now some lovely jute mesh bags which can be crammed full of leaves and act as a perfect container whilst the leaf mould is forming, but will eventually rot down and add to the useful material you produce. You can see these on my website www.pippagreenwood.com/products. Whichever method you use you should have a useable product in 12-18 months, but leave it a bit longer and it will be even better!
Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for gorgeous gardening things including the unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ - you choose the vegetables you’d like to grow and Pippa sends gardenready plants as well as weekly advice and tips emails to you. Plus Nemaslug, signed books, jute composting bags and lots more besides.

HOME INTERIORS
Eco Home By Katherine Sorrell
A few simple measures to update your property can make an enormous difference.
Step One - Get to know your home Knowing what your home is made from, how was it originally built, and what changes have been made will make it easier to work out how you can ecoimprove it. Step Two What are its weak points? Obvious problems are rattling, draughty windows, gaps around the edges of the front door and heat escaping through the roof. To help target improvements where they are most needed, commission a professional test for air tightness and heat loss. Best done on a cold, clear winter’s night, it is non-invasive and should cost around £300. Step Three - The loft A top priority for ecoimprovement, with 300mm of quilt insulation recommended, though there should be some ventilation in the loft to avoid condensation. There is a range of insulation materials, but natural materials, such as sheep’s wool or hemp, tend to be better for older properties, as they absorb water vapour and release it. Check your 42
Seagrass is durable, breathable and environmentally friendly, while wall-towall carpeting helps prevent heat loss and draughts. Seagrass Natural, £16.26 per square metre, Urbane Living, 020 7138 38 38; www.urbaneliving.co.uk.
loft regularly for signs of condensation, mould and small animals. Step Four - Windows Windows can leak a lot of heat, especially if they are old and single glazed, and short of double glazing, draught proofing is the answer. For a longerterm solution you will need to cut in a rebate and fit either compression seals (hinged windows) or wipers (sashes). Alternatively, secondary glazing will dramatically improve both air tightness and heat loss, and there are clear panels that fix to the window frame with a magnetic strip. Alternatively, use thick, lined curtains, hung close to the wall, or timber shutters - which are more effective than double glazing. Step Five - Doors To make external doors airtight, adjust as necessary for a good fit, add draught proofing (as for windows) and cover keyholes, letter slots and cat flaps. Use a ‘sausage dog’ at the bottom or hang a long, thick curtain from a hinged rod.
Step Six - Floors Ventilation below your suspended timber floor evaporates moisture from the timber and supporting
Original timber sash windows and doors add character and appeal and, if fully functional and well maintained, can also enhance a property’s value. They do need regular maintenance, of course, and if you run into trouble try to renovate rather than replace if possible, adding draught proofing to improve energy efficiency. This elegant window has been renovated by specialists Ventrolla, 0800 0277 454; www.ventrolla.co.uk.
structures, so don’t block up external air grilles. To make the floor itself airtight, a fitted carpet with a thermal underlay is perfect, or for timber boards seal gaps around skirting boards with foam strips, silicon mastic or slivers of matching timber. If the boards have gaps, use fillets of balsa wood or lengths of string, which you can stain, glue and push into place. If you can get below the boards or are planning to lift them, consider adding insulation underneath. Step Seven - Walls It is usually straightforward to insulate modern cavity walls but older, solid walls are more of a problem. Modern systems may trap moisture and cause damp, but one option is to add timber panelling inside, leaving an air gap behind. It may also be possible to add external or internal insulation, but be sure to get impartial advice.
QUICK TIPS • Installing shutters can reduce heat loss by 60%. For efficiency, they should meet with a rebated edge and include a brush strip or rubber seal. • A thick rug helps to reduce draughts through gaps in floorboards. • Adding a pelmet to a window treatment helps to reduce draughts and stop warm air disappearing behind your curtains or blind. • Place radiators on internal walls rather than below windows, where their heat can disappear more easily.
Adding a portiere rod is a great way to insulate a draughty exterior door. Hang heavy, floorlength curtains, ensuring that there is enough stack-back space for the door to be opened easily. If possible, use an insulating lining and heavy fleece interlining – bearing in mind that the pole will need to be able to support the weight. 12mm self-closing button portiere in beeswax, from £44.10, Jim Lawrence, 01473 826685; www.jim-lawrence.co.uk.

HOBBIES
What your brain can gain from a musicmaking hobby By Kate McLelland
When did you last pick up a musical instrument and play a piece of music from beginning to end? Last week? Last month? Last year? Sadly for most people the answer is quite likely to be: “Not since I was a child.”
Musicians are most likely to develop their abilities during childhood. It’s the ideal time to learn basic skills such as reading music and playing an instrument, but as children turn into teenagers it’s not unusual to find that the pleasures of learning and playing are sacrificed to the pressures of taking exams, studying at college or university and – eventually – taking up full-time work. Although it may be hard to find the time to make music as a busy adult, much attention has recently been focused on the physiological benefits of learning to play an instrument. For example, a study based on 157 sets of twins discovered that those who were able to make music were 33% less likely to suffer from dementia. Recent research has also suggested that playing music can improve listening skills, encourage better self-discipline, help with memory and even increase the IQ of both children and adults. In 2009 the University of Zurich conducted research with people aged 65 and over and discovered that playing an instrument for an
46
hour a week produced strong changes in the brain. So whether you’re returning to an instrument you once loved to play, or learning for the first time, you can enjoy your hobby in the knowledge that you’re not just bringing pleasure to others through your music, you are enhancing your brain’s capabilities. If you’re feeling insecure about your musical skills, those first few steps towards learning (or returning to) a musical instrument will be crucial. There are many resources out there, so take your time exploring the options to find a solution that’s tailor-made for your level of skill and experience. If you live in a city you may be able to access adult education services. Pick up a prospectus at your local library or search online to find a suitable course. Some adult learning institutes let you try a taster session so you can decide if the lessons are appropriate before you book an entire course. Alternatively, find a local tutor by searching the Music Teachers UK website (www.
musicteachers.co.uk). This organisation offers a free service to help musicians with every aspect of education and performance and the site provides some valuable information, including a helpful guide to selecting a music teacher. If you are returning to music and have retained some basic (if rusty) skills, you might enjoy joining up with a local amateur music group, or even putting together a group from scratch. Making Music (www.makingmusic.org.uk) helps its members to set up, run and develop music groups in their communities. The BBC’s website also provides some useful links, including resources to help you learn to read music, explore local courses and even find an amateur orchestra in your area (www.bbc.co.uk/learning/subjects/music.shtml). Whatever your interest in music, whether it’s performing to concert level or joining an amateur ukulele orchestra, it can be a hugely rewarding hobby. Apart from the hours of pleasure you’ll get from playing, science suggests that your brain is likely to stay sharp well into old age.

Will Bellows launched his business in 2004. Initially it was just Will on his own, but when the business started to grow through repeat calls and word of mouth, he relaunched as Home Computer Help. Eleven years later he has six employees with two new technicians starting soon. In 2004 technology at home was in its infancy. Broadband had just started to be widely available and affordable; tablets and smartphones were unheard of. But it’s difficult to live without some sort of computer now and for those not online – or online but struggling – it can be really frustrating. For Will and his team, getting the elderly online for the first time is something they love doing. Hearing from happy customers when they are able to order home deliveries during winter and connecting with family members is a very satisfying part of the job. From new users to family networks and home businesses, Will and the team are here to help.
