I’ve always really loved music. I can remember spending my first savings on a radio/cassette player which I took everywhere with me. It cost me a small fortune in batteries and, as this was pre-headphone days, made me pretty unpopular with the neighbours. Although music took a bit of a backseat when my children were young, they are both at university now and I have revived my interest. I attend lots of concerts and music festivals throughout the summer and have joined a Meetup group for other music lovers (www.meetup.com/OMGOutdoor-Music-Group or Google “OMG Meetup”). With a few exceptions, I’m really not into the music I grew up with; I like modern music and current artists. I’m fit, healthy and reasonably slim, but one look at my face and you’d know I’m not exactly Radio 1’s target audience, meaning I sometimes feel out of place at live events. If I go to concerts, these are mostly in the dark and I can’t generally be seen. But if I go to a music festival during the day it’s a different matter. I was near the front at one the other week and I suddenly realised I was older than anyone else there by at least 25 years. ‘The kids’ should have been staring at me wondering which teenager I was accompanying. However they were far too interested in the act on stage, their friends and themselves to bother looking at me. Yes my backache might tell me I’m too old and I certainly can’t ‘do’ camping, but I’ve come to the conclusion that nobody else is bothered about your age or how you look.

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes
My Sunday morning began like any other. Settled into my favourite chair with my brew, a slice of freshly buttered toast and two episodes of Broadchurch on catch-up, I was just about to take my first sip of tea when in walked Sarah, closely followed by Hannah and Emily. Sarah, wearing a benevolent, concerned expression on her face gently relieved me of my steaming mug, sat me down and said, “Tom, What we are about to say is said out of love and concern, nothing else.” Then I realised what was happening, it was a family intervention! But an intervention about what? Was my customary Friday night pint of mild down the Paraffin Lamp getting out of hand? Was my chocolate habit becoming a cause for concern? What could it be? I decided to confront the issue head on. “Listen, if anyone is wondering why all the cream eggs keep disappearing, I want you all to know that from now on I promise to share the value pack with everyone else.” A confused silence descended. The three women in my life all stared at each other. Chocolate 6
Eggs it seemed, were not the issue. Sarah pressed on. “We are gathered here today Tom to tell you that, well, you are a bit of a scruff.” “A what?” Next to pipe up was Hannah. “Yes Dad, look at that jumper, look at those jeans?” “What’s wrong with them?” “Dad, who wears hiking socks, walking shoes and a snood to the gym?” “Yes Tom, the girls are embarrassed. Their friends are talking about you. You need a new wardrobe, urgently”, said Sarah. “Well ok, I’ll go through my stuff and - “ “Too late, we’ve done it for you.” Then Sarah, much to my dismay, produced a black bin liner full of my precious old clothes. Sweatshirts, jeans and - horror of horrors - my Bruce Springsteen 2005 tour t-shirt. “Not the Boss! Please?” “No Tom, this lot is off to the charity shop in the precinct. Now, grab your coat and let’s go shopping! Err, on second thoughts, leave the coat, let’s just go.”
In the vast outlet clothes store I wandered aimlessly around, fingering the rails without a clue what I was doing. Eventually I held up a pair of jeans with the very pleasing price tag of £24.99. “Sarah, what about these?” Sarah examined my choice. “You haven’t just grabbed the cheapest have you?” “Not at all.” “Right put them back and go try on these.” I examined the pair picked by Sarah. To my untrained eye, they looked identical to the jeans I’d just chosen. Identical that is, except for the price. Sarah’s were fifty pounds dearer. “Why would I pay seventy-five pounds for something I can get for-twenty five, I just don’t…” Grabbing the seat of the expensive jeans, Sarah pointed to a yellow logo stitched onto the rear pocket. “Look! That’s why. They are designer.” “So, they sew a little squiggle onto the pocket and they charge you treble the price? Are you being serious?” The look from Sarah told me that

www.alresfordinteriors.co.uk yes, she was indeed being deadly serious. She picked out another pair from the rack, handed both of them over and pointed in the direction of the changing rooms. I sloped away to the curtained-off area where a glum-faced child handed me an orange circle on which was printed a number two. I battled with the first pair for what seemed like an age. Eventually I gave up, deciding that in the words of my Auntie Joyce they “Wouldn’t go near me.” The second pair I actually managed to heave myself into. And a more uncomfortable pair of pants I couldn’t imagine. Baggy round the crotch and barely covering the posterior, I assumed that this particular “Designer” - in his hurry to stitch on the magic money squiggle, had stamped them with the wrong size. Outside, I informed Sarah of the manufacturer’s error. Sarah, shaking her head in defeat, flung back at me the cheap pair I had originally chosen. I tried them on right there in the store. Of course, they fitted perfectly. Eye rolls from Sarah, a triumphant beam from her husband. The next day Sarah arrived home from work to find me wearing the new jeans and another, different purchase. “Tom! What are you doing wearing that tatty old Bruce Springsteen T-shirt? I thought I gave that thing away?” “It’s very simple darling, yesterday afternoon, decided to go to the charity shop and do my bit for cancer research...”

Station Approach Development A Step Closer Development of the Station Approach area of Winchester has moved a step closer. Winchester City Council’s Cabinet confirmed its commitment to the development of Station Approach at a meeting in June. Proposals would bring new offices, shops, homes, parking and public spaces. Cabinet agreed in principle to ‘Bidder B’ from the recent competition being the preferred architect to take forward the Station Approach development. Appointment is subject to further advice on legal, financial and design parameters for varying the recommended option to meet issues and concerns raised.
The advice is due to be presented to Cabinet during the month of July. Cllr Stephen Godfrey, the Leader of Winchester City Council, said: “Cabinet is sending a clear message to Winchester businesses and residents that the Council is determined to deliver the economic benefits of this development and ensure that proposals are right for Winchester in terms of architecture and

RECIPE
Salmon and Broccoli Quiche Serves 6
Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes, plus chilling and cooling
A rich and creamy quiche packed full of succulent salmon flakes and broccoli. Serve warm or cold with a crisp green leaf salad. Ingredients: • 250g shortcrust pastry • 300g salmon fillets • 200g small broccoli florets • 4 large eggs • 250ml double cream • 100ml milk • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 50g Cheddar cheese, finely grated
TIP Replace the salmon with flaked smoked mackerel for a change of flavour and add a handful of fresh chopped dill or parsley to the egg mixture. 14
1. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20cm loose-based flan tin (it should be at least 4cm deep). Trim off the excess pastry and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
2. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and baking beans. Place the flan tin on the baking sheet in the oven and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-6 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 190C/170C fan/Gas 5.
3. Meanwhile, place the salmon fillets in a deep frying pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil then simmer gently for 5-6 minutes until just cooked through. Remove with a slotted spoon and leave until cold. Roughly flake the salmon discarding any skin and bones. Steam the broccoli florets for 1-2 minutes until almost tender.
4. Place the flaked salmon and broccoli in the pastry case. Whisk the eggs in large jug then whisk in the double cream and milk. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
5. Gently pour the egg mixture over the filling then scatter over the grated cheese. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown. Serve warm or cold.

Mould, Damp or Salt on the walls? Almost every homeowner at some time in their life experiences damp problems. Mildew, efflorescence (salts on the surface of the wall) and blistering plaster means it needs treating as soon as possible and the plaster replacing with a “breathable” alternative. BKM Mannesmann UK ltd has a simple but technologically advanced treatment system for rising and penetrative damp. The process protects, inside or outside walls of all construction types and materials. The technology is developed from extensive experience in Germany and is now available in your area. The BKM product ‘pico-coats’ all the pores in the material, sealing out water, but allows it to dry naturally. A microscopic polymer creates a complete hydrophobic barrier in all types of brick and stone-work, masonry, cement and different lime renders even where moisture is at 100%. BKM also has an external breathable wall protection application, which seals all types of ender, salt impregnated brick-work, lime based paints and render-with a Guarantee for 25 yrs. Untreated

GARDENING
Plan Your Planting by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com
Although gardens are now looking a little tired, the drier soil means it is not a good time for planting shrubs or trees. So, do what you can to perk up flower beds and borders and then start to plan ahead for spring, as garden centres are starting to take delivery of bulbs which will get your garden looking fabulous early next year.
a few bulbs. As they are often in flower before the rest of the garden gets going, they can be used to under-plant existing trees, shrubs and herbaceous flowers. Bulbs are an excellent way to make the most of every square metre of soil, and to ensure that your garden looks lovely as early as possible in the year.
Many bulbs start to put down roots at the end of summer and into autumn, so prompt planting is advisable, though tulips are best planted in October.
Many bulbs do well in containers, so if you have a permanently planted up container this too can be under-planted with several layers of spring flowering bulbs. Use a transplanting trowel to minimise damage to the existing plants’ roots.
Another option is mail order catalogues which have a bigger choice of bulbs, often including more unusual varieties. Time is of the essence, however, so send off for these as soon as possible so that you can choose some delightful bulbs ready for planting in the next month or so. Before buying, decide where in the garden you can cram in
18
If you are unsure which bulbs go together, don’t feel frightened to experiment. Alternatively, many catalogues and garden centres offer mixed selections of bulbs for specific purposes and there are also some lovely packs of bulbs following colour themes. These usually represent good value for money too. If you have a dull patch of lawn, brighten it up in the early months by planting some small bulbs. Crocus or miniature narcissus are particularly useful, as once the flowers have faded you don’t
have much deteriorating foliage to cope with. In larger areas, consider planting up drifts of full-sized daffodils, but make sure you don’t want to mow the grass beneath these trees or shrubs regularly, as you can’t safely remove the leaves of the daffodils until at least six weeks after flowering. Check that bulbs are in good condition before you buy, avoiding any which show even the slightest signs of deterioration such as sunken brown spots, excessive softness or patches of bluish mould. Larger bulbs generally seem to do better than smaller versions of the same variety. For large quantities of the same variety, buy a net of bulbs from your garden centre or direct from a mail order specialist nursery. If you can’t plant your bulbs promptly, keep them in a cool and well ventilated spot before planting, as this is essential to reduce the risk of them deteriorating. Next month I’ll be looking at novel ways to make the best use of the gorgeous array of available bulbs, so plant some now and then treat yourself to a few more for September planting!

MOTORING
MINI Countryman vs Skoda Yeti By James Baggott MINI Countryman
All MINIs have a distinctive and instantly recognisable look to them, and with the Countryman range, it carries this identifiable image into a stockier frame to give you more space and practicality. The stylish bodywork helps to make the Countryman a tantalising option in the CUV sector and with great additions and features to match, it’s difficult to see why you wouldn’t choose it. However, it has competition from Skoda’s Yeti, a CUV similar in size and price and both cars have their good elements. For starters, both models have had recent redesigns to create more space and alter their looks to be more modern and upto-date. It has to be said that the Countryman certainly looks better than the Yeti, with the distinguishing features of the
MINI range, such as the shape, the headlights and front grille, to make it truly stand out on the road. The size of both models also make them very practical, with the smaller Countryman offering 350 litres of space in the boot with the seats up, whilst the Yeti has only 66 litres more in a car 20cm longer and 10cm taller. This means you can get more for your money space-wise in the Countryman, especially as the range starts off cheaper than the Skoda. Customisability has also been a recent appeal of the MINI market, and with the Countryman this is no exception. With MINI’s design additions that can be fitted to the whole range, you can personalise your Countryman as much as you wish. Also you can fit satellite navigation, stereo system, leather trim and ‘Run-Flat’ tyres to your model; great options that can be added to any of the range. Good options aren’t as easy to come by on the Yeti, as the better choices to fit are only available further up the Yeti model range, whilst almost all are compatible with every Countryman model. To compete with the Yeti’s off-road capabilities in the Yeti
22
Outdoor and more expensive models, MINI offers the ‘All-4’ all-wheel drive system throughout the class. With a higher ride height and great grip on offer, the Countryman All-4 system will give you confidence both on and off road, with only a small premium on top of the two-wheel drive versions. The Yeti’s base model is fitted with a 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine producing 110hp, whilst the 1.6-litre in the One produces just 98hp. This doesn’t compromise much in speed with only a marginal difference in acceleration. Overall, with a wider variety of vehicle and equipment options, value for money and great 4x4 system, the MINI Countryman is the better option of the two, and with the great looking bodywork to encase you, why wouldn’t you want to drive it? The MINI Countryman is available from £17,105 for the One Countryman, with the top of the range 218hp John Cooper Works All-4 starting at £28,985. For more information on the Countryman or any other models in the MINI range, contact your nearest Inchcape MINI dealership.
