Pixie Lott To Star In Truman Capote’s Breakfast At Tiffany’s At Mayflower Theatre 25 – 30 April The first UK and Ireland tour of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the classic tale of Holly Golightly written by Truman Capote and brought to life so memorably by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 film, will be coming to Mayflower Theatre as part of a UK tour and prior to a West End run. The novella has been adapted for the stage by Pulitzer Prize-winning Finalist and Tony and Olivier Award-winning playwright Richard Greenberg (Take Me Out, Three Days of Rain), and contains memorable songs from the era as well as original music by Grant Olding (One Man, Two Guvnors). Pixie Lott will star as Holly Golightly. “The goal of this version is to return to the original setting of the novella, which is the New York of the Second World War, as well as to resume its tone – still stylish and romantic, yes, but rougher-edged and more candid than people generally remember,” Richard Greenberg explained. “Capote was a great writer and a natural maker of plots and Breakfast at Tiffany’s has a drive that makes it very alluring to dramatise.”

2

Breakfast at Tiffany’s will be directed by Nikolai Foster, the Artistic Director of Curve Leicester, as part of his inaugural season for the company, with production design by Matthew Wright (La Cage Aux Folles). Pixie Lott said, “I am so excited to play Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s on tour and in my first West End play. I absolutely love her style, and free spirit; she has always been an icon to me and I can’t wait to bring my own personality to the role. Alongside music, I’ve always wanted to be in a play, and getting the opportunity to be in one of my alltime favourites and play this fabulous character is a dream come true.” Mayflower Theatre Box Office 02380 711811 www.mayflower.org.uk

Getting Switched On … I’m not a tv addict although I admit I’m addicted to certain programmes … if that’s allowed. When these highlights of my week are not on the agenda, I occasionally, rarely flop on the sofa and randomly surf everything from what’s on, Sky Planner and the endless library of box sets. Nothing. All this technology at my fingertips and I can’t find anything to please, educate or entertain me. I have found the answer and it’s the Radio Times thanks to a tip off from a canny elderly eavesdropper (while I was moaning at the rubbish on TV). Now, I scan the pages of the RT and record everything from documentaries, films showing way passed my bedtime and dramas that I would never have found without a bit of guidance. If you can’t record it, you know what to look out for. Brilliant. It occurred to me that Discover Magazines is another handy tool to help you find what you are looking for. Yes, it’s all on the “web, out there for us to find but it’s so much nicer when someone else does the finding for you. My daughter suggested a solution to solve our “fancy a film tonight? dilemma”. Choose by film star not the movie. Look up all their work and play each chronologically thus watching them develop as an artist. Robert Carlyle, John Malkovich and Christopher Walken are on my list and just added, sadly is Alan Rickman. So, as you are flicking through the pages of Discover make a note of anything useful be it from the Clubs & Groups Listing (p44), a pilates class and an event from our What’s On (pages 6 & 52) or someone to service your boiler or get your garden into shape (see our List of Advertisers p54).

INTERVIEW

Duran Duran Duran Duran returned to the music scene in 2015, with the single ‘Pressure Off’ and the album ‘Paper Gods’. The Evening Breeze’s Lucy Ambache caught up with bassist John Taylor and talked collaborations, mature touring and Glastonbury. I hear you’re a fan of The Breeze? I have found myself listening a lot and you guys are almost always playing something I like listening to. Well this interview is going to go very well! <laughs> We have been loving playing ‘Pressure Off’. I watched the behind the scenes video and it’s great to see the musical brilliance of Duran Duran, Mark Ronson and Nile Rodgers working together. It really is quite something! Yeah. We worked a lot with Nile in the eighties and it wasn’t until working with him on this song that we really appreciated what he brings to the room – and as a bass player, you just don’t get to play with musicians like him that often. And Mark’s a very different kind of guy – he’s like watching all the time. It was a great experience and nice to have something on the album that married the old eighties sounding Duran with the 16

contemporary Duran. It’s sort of been updated into 2015 on the album. That’s the job. You can’t just throw the baby out. You’ve got to hold onto the classic aspects but you’ve got to let in enough new energy so it sounds fresh and interesting. Otherwise you’ll just be preaching to the converted. With every album you do, you’ve got the opportunity to open things out a little bit. What ended up defining this album was the amount of featured artists we’ve got on it. And that’s not usual for you? Not at all. We like to think of ourselves as a closed shop – that’s what bands do - “we’re a gang, we’re all inclusive”. You look at the culture and what’s going on in music over the last few years and it’s all about features. You’ve got EDM and hip hop and they’re all about features. By the end of this album, we’d have anybody on it! Anybody. Come! Come! Play on our record! So you’re taking this album out on the road. Are you still up for this? Are you ready to tour? After spending two years in the studio, we’re like “get us on tour!”. You’ve got these two different experiences that make up doing what we do. There’s the introspective studio work where it’s like a ‘man cave’ and the touring balances it out. I wouldn’t want to only be a

touring musician but I wouldn’t just want to be a studio musician either. Is it going to be a bit more different for you guys? A bit more civilised? We’re very civilised! I know what you’re getting at though. You just don’t have the energy to party like you used to. Now the energy just goes into making the show as great as it can be. We’re very relaxed professionals and when you’re married and you’ve got families, it’s not like it was when you were in your twenties. But I would hope so too! I wouldn’t want to be me now doing what I was doing then – it would be pretty sad. We’ll see you at Glastonbury 2016, right? It’s got to be, right? On the main stage! That would be good wouldn’t it? Why has this not happened? I don’t know. I’ve never had the opportunity to do the ‘hard sell’ but I’m sure one day we’ll get there. I’d better get down there and do the shmooze!

Hear more celebrity interviews with Lucy Ambache on The Evening Breeze, Sunday to Thursday 7-10pm. Find out more at www.thebreeze.com.

Wildlife Rangers club starts at Testwood Lakes Young people looking to gain valuable experience in wildlife conservation and bushcraft skills need look no further than their local nature reserve in Totton. Every last Saturday of the month from 2-4pm Wildlife Rangers started running at Testwood Lakes in September 2015. So far participants have

helped with litter picking, gone bird watching, had a go at fire lighting, made bird boxes and an insect hotel, carried out path work and raked up a hay meadow. Staff and volunteer leaders create a varied monthly session whilst leaving it open and flexible, and involve the young conservationists in planning future sessions. Grace Hall, Education Officer for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust says “We were keen to provide more opportunities for young people over 12 to get involved with nature conservation. It is important that teenagers have

the chance to learn new skills, meet like-minded people, and enjoy spending time outdoors in a safe environment”. Over the next few months there will be more bushcraft and birding sessions, as well as some woodland management. Going into the summer months there will be opportunities for investigating pond and meadow habitats to do some plant and insect identification. For more information or to book contact Grace on 02380 667929 or email testwoodlakes@hiwwt.org.uk

GARDENING

Vertical Cover With Climbers

If the boundaries of your garden are uninteresting or drab, then it is time to think about some vertical gardening. Upright surfaces are itching to be clothed in glorious climbers or wall shrubs, and if you have several vertical sites then so much the better.

A visit to your local garden centre will reveal a plentiful supply of suitable plants. Start by looking at the surface you have, the size, the direction it faces and the amount of sun or shade the plants growing on the wall or fence are likely to receive. Soil type is important as the plant you choose must be suited to the site. Some climbers are quite quick growing and will look good later this year, and improve as the years pass. Many provide strong colour and others will be a useful backdrop for the garden as a whole. Most buildings can have climbers grown against them, so if you have an unsightly shed, garage or even a fairly uninteresting looking back to your house, then

consider erecting some sort of support system on which to grow your climbers. Break up the monotony of a long stretch of wall with a range of different plants, and make a tall, narrow building seem broader by only allowing them to reach the height of the first floor. A climbing hydrangea, Hydrangea petiolaris, or self-clinging plants such as ivies are ideal, but make sure the mortar on your wall is in good shape before planting. Climbers are best planted in open ground as they tend to have sizeable root systems. If grown in containers you must re-pot regularly and ultimately plan to use a big container such as a half barrel. Use a loam-based potting compost

Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ - fantastic UK grown vegetable plants of your choice plus weekly advice and tips emails from Pippa, Nemaslug, biological controls, pop-up crop covers, signed books and lots more besides. 20

and add extra grit for drainage, and place a deep layer of crocks at the base of the container. Add controlled release fertilizer granules to the compost, to ensure that plants get adequately fed for the first few months. A triangular or V-shaped trellis panel at the back will give initial support for the plant to climb up before moving on to your wall or fence. Tie the top section of the trellis into the wall or fence, so that it does not rock about. For ground planting, dig a large hole at least 18 inches (45 cm) from the wall or fence and incorporate plenty of compost or well rotted manure. Soak the plant’s root ball and place in the hole, ideally at a 45 degree angle so that it leans towards the wall, then spread out the roots and plant. If your climber came already attached to bamboo canes, untie the stems from any central stake and train the best looking shoots towards your new support system, using the bamboo canes to help it on its way. Keep climbers well watered, particularly if they are on or near a sunny wall.

Beauty Gifts for Mother’s Day By Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk

Clarins’ make-up palettes are some of the best on the market in my opinion, and their latest offering is no exception. The Natural Glow Eye Shadow Palette, £33, features five very wearable shades, from light beige to warm brown, all housed in an attractive rose-gold coloured compact. They’re easy to apply, and the palette is perfect for keeping in a handbag to transform a natural day time look into night time glam. Get it quick though; it’s a limited edition, and if previous incarnations are anything to go by, it’s likely to sell out pretty fast.

rather lovely sat out on display as well. There’s a very good chance this could become her new favourite scent. At £75 for 100ml, it’s not cheap, but consider it part-payment for all that teenage angst she had to deal with.

If you’re looking to earn some serious brownie points, perfume is the way to go. Connock London‘s Kukui is brimming with floral notes, including gardenia, Moroccan rose, white jasmine and calla lily, but it’s given a grown-up, oriental twist with notes of sandalwood, vetiver, white amber and warm vanilla. The result is a truly gorgeous fragrance, and the bottle looks

RECIPE

Chicken In Red Wine

This is a quick, easy and flavoursome way to serve chicken. Use a fullbodied red wine such as a Burgundy for the best flavour, although there is no need to buy a really pricy one! Serves 4 Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes 2 tbsp olive oil 600g skinless chicken breast fillets, cut into chunks 225g button mushrooms 200g shallots, peeled 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 300ml red wine 200ml chicken or vegetable stock 2 tbsp sun-dried tomato puree 1 bay leaf 2tbsp cornflour Sprigs of fresh parsley to garnish Sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans, to serve

1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chicken chunks and fry for 4-5 minutes, turning frequently until golden brown all over. Transfer to a plate with a slotted spoon. 2. Add the button mushrooms and shallots to the pan and fry for 5 minutes until just beginning to brown. Add the garlic and fry for a further minute then return the chicken to the pan and stir in the red wine, stock, tomato puree and bay leaf. 3. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 25-30 minutes or until the chicken and onions are tender. 4. Blend the cornflour and 2 tbsp water to a smooth paste then stir the paste into the pan. Simmer gently for further 2-3 minutes, stirring all the time, until the liquid has thickened. Serve with sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans and garnish with parsley sprigs.

Tip This dish freezes well, so it’s worth doubling up the quantities to freeze away half for another day. Allow to cool completely then spoon into a shallow freezer-proof container and freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost thoroughly then reheat in a flameproof casserole until piping hot. 26

Dividend taxation and other changes to tax laws in 2016/17 A change to the dividend taxation laws is to be implemented from April 2016. Pension and ISA dividends will not be affected by the new regime and will remain free of tax, but the new dividend rules are likely to have an adverse effect on directors and shareholders of small incorporated companies.

32

The new proposals will reportedly bring in an extra £2.54 billion in revenue for the 2016/17 tax year,¹ with smaller amounts continuing to bolster the public purse in future years. The changes are an effort by the government to equalise tax laws for those who run unincorporated businesses. here’s a summary of the changes to be introduced • A maximum annual Dividend Allowance of £5,000 is to come into force (after taking the personal allowance into account) • The existing 10% notional Dividend Tax Credit will be scrapped • Dividends over the £5,000 annual limit will be taxed at the following rates: 7.5% on dividend income in the basic rate band 32.5% (for the higher rate band) 38.1% (in the additional rate band)

People with a low dividend income will see a reduction in their tax bill, but the new measures are likely to hit family-run small businesses the hardest. So why has the Treasury decided to overhaul the current system? The government is attempting to discourage tax-motivated incorporation, which means setting up a business as a limited company simply to enjoy a lower rate of tax on income. In the past, directors/ shareholders of a limited company have been able to take a small salary from their business, which attracted enough tax to maintain their entitlement to the state pension. The government’s objection, however, is that company profits are then used to extract a further dividend taxed at the much lower rate of 10%.

Strong objections from the business community With the inherent difficulties facing small businesses, fears have been expressed that the government is making it much harder for people in business to survive financially. This includes both individual contractors who have incorporated their businesses, and family-run companies. In fact, an online petition has been started, objecting to these new rules. Company directors/shareholders say that the rewards of low dividend taxation compensated for the long hours and risks they took when starting their business, and that their overall contribution to the economy needs to be more

widely acknowledged by the government. Are there any other changes to UK taxation in the forthcoming financial year? Other announcements made in last year’s Budget include: • Pension tax relief changes Restrictions on pension tax relief for those with an income of £150,000 or more will come into force from April 2016. A fixed rate of 33% will apply for all in the new tax year, regardless of the rate band. • Savings interest Said to be an acknowledgement of recent poor returns for savers, George Osborne

These are all significant changes to taxation laws in the UK, and are set to bring in considerable sums for the Treasury, but the new dividend tax rules seem to be attracting the most concern and criticism.

Introducing children to the wonders of walking at Minstead Study Centre When the children come to stay at Minstead Study Centre they experience the joys of walking in the wild, sensing their surroundings first hand, rather than seeing a diluted view of the world through the filter of a car window. The benefits of walking are many and clear to see. Grasping a chance to immerse in the natural world; seeing, smelling, hearing, touching and even tasting your environment. Starting to learn about the planet through the five senses using active learning as a doorway to lifelong memory. On foot you have access to really wild, off road places, numinous places which stir the spirit. Tiptoeing onto an ancient bogland where feet rarely tread, to learn a special respect for a unique, fragile habitat. Jumping onto frozen puddles to experience the elements in all types of weather.

breath, tones the muscles and builds core strength. It elevates the heart rate and burns up calories. As part of our forest ramble the children count how many steps they take in a minute, and then calculate how many steps have been taken over several hours of walking. Usually this equates to an epic 15,000 step, calorie burning adventure! On our journey we rise 40m higher than our starting point, four telegraph poles high, via ditch, valley, track and hill. “Imagine climbing to the top of a 40m ladder!” Children can relax outdoors interacting with friends and new places, developing new language in response to new landscapes. “Naughty Elephants, Squirt Water! Never Eat Shredded Wheat” Reciting all the directions of the compass as we walk, chat and sing our way to the wildwoods via conifer woodland, heath, bog and stream.

There is a great opportunity to learn about road safety in a real context. We use a hands up, call and response technique promising to abide by the rules of the road, walking single file. We can also practice safe road crossing, “listen and nod if you can hear, a bird singing, the wind in the trees, a nod if you know cars are dangerous and can squash people. And if it’s safe after a count of three, cross the road in a wave between the yellow jacketed adults.” On a more global, environmental scale we consider the advantages of walking over means of powered transport, all in the light of our responsibility to become a low carbon, energy efficient society. We praise the day we made the decision to remove the minibus from site as a turning point in the impact of our learning programme. We now teach the children to walk whenever possible!

In these times of electronic entertainment, children need to be encouraged to unplug themselves from their devices and step outside for a moment. They can breathe the fresh clean air and surround themselves in silence. A brisk walk has many associated health benefits. It deepens the

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Totton, Ashurst & New Forest areas and Justin is finding that his

approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Fostering, Making The Right Choice For You You’ve decided to discover more about the rewards of fostering, so here are few guidelines to help you. Fostering Agencies There are different types of fostering providers, including private companies, charities and local authorities. All will appear similar so look closely at each offering. Application Process Your initial enquiry should be responded to swiftly and an appointment arranged to visit you at your home. During the visit they should explain in detail about the challenges and rewards of fostering, the application and assessment process, and answer all your questions. You’re going to be looking after vulnerable children so it’s important that all the necessary checks are completed. This is a detailed process and usually takes about 6-8 months, however some agencies take less time. Consider the values and ethics of the provider and the culture they promote.

Training You Every agency will provide basic training in fostering, but consider those that go further by encouraging and helping you develop a career path in fostering. Ensure that all the training offered is fully funded by them, that you receive independently accredited qualifications and they have the professional expertise to ensure you acquire the skills, confidence and understanding to make a difference to the lives of the children you foster. Supporting You The support you receive is crucial to a successful outcome for both you and the children you foster. Your social worker should know and understand you, and have time for you and your foster child so they are able to deal with any concerns you may have. Social workers in some providers look after only 10 families while others have case loads of up to 30. Lower case numbers ensures more time and personal support is available to devote to you and your foster child. A Career For You Fostering is a professional career and you should be encouraged to improve your skill levels, as the better qualified you are the better rewarded you will be, both emotionally and financially. Consider those agencies that value their carers and go that step further; paying a little more, providing fully funded in house training, having more time to support their carers and providing the additional resources to ensure you have a rewarding career.

Make The Most Of A Small Kitchen A simple table at right angles to the kitchen, with stools tucked beneath, creates a handy eating area. Cooke & Lewis Raffello high gloss white kitchen, B&Q, tel 0333 014 3098; www.diy.com.

Tiny kitchen spaces are often extremely efficient – you can wash, slice and cook almost without moving at all. And you can create a practical and attractive galley kitchen for very little money, writes Katherine Sorrell. Planning the room In a small kitchen every centimetre counts, and the first principle of design is the ‘work triangle’ – the movement between the cooker, sink and fridge. Each zone should be self-contained, with its own storage and worktop space, but it should also be easy to move between each one. Ensure this by drawing a floor plan with lines connecting each point on the triangle, and avoid placing obstructions between them. In theory the most efficient length 46

for each side of the triangle is about two metres, but in practice the three work centres should not be uncomfortably close or too far apart. In a double galley, keep the sink and cooker on the same side, with the fridge opposite. You can’t create a triangle in a single galley, but its linear shape makes it easy to use as long as the line is not too long. Aim for tall cupboards at one end, then the hob, and the maximum amount of worktop between the hob and the sink, with the dishwasher next to the sink at the other end. Add a rubbish bin under the sink

Efficient internal storage can make all the difference in a small kitchen. Storage options, Rational, tel 01543 459459; www.rational.de/en.

and, if you have room, a pull-out larder. eating and entertaining It’s always a good idea to fit in somewhere to eat and drink – perhaps a fold-down table, or a small dining table which extends for extra guests. Or, add a breakfast bar by forming an ‘L’ shape at the end of a worktop and tuck a couple of high stools underneath it. Choosing units & worktops The trend is for mixing textures and colours in the kitchen, including metallics, marble and rough, tough industrial accents. Deep worktops and open shelving will update any sized kitchen but quality matters most. Cheaper carcasses are made from chipboard, sometimes with just hardboard backs, which is fine for a budget option. But for a well-used, long-lasting kitchen, opt for plywood or MDF veneer, the thicker the better. Laminate worktops are the budget choice –

choose high-pressure rather than low-pressure ones, as they’re more durable. Wooden worktops can be inexpensive, but avoid ones that are too cheap or too thin, especially next to a sink as they’ll just warp and

buckle. Splashbacks are often made from the worktop material, though cheaper alternatives are ceramic tiles, tongue and groove painted with tough gloss, or a fashionable sheet of clear or coloured acrylic.

Make use of wall space, drawers, slim appliances and free-standing storage such as trolleys. Metod Grevsta kitchen, £47 for a 40x60cm base cabinet with shelves, Ikea, tel 020 3645 0000; www.ikea.co.uk.

Make the most of your space with these ideas • Fit wall cupboards that go right up to the ceiling • Sliding doors are ideal as they don’t intrude into the room • ‘Magic’ corner cupboards (with mechanisms that let you access the back) let you fit more in • Wall-hung racking systems provide organisation but let you see what you’ve got • Pull-out shelving and slim drawers (e.g. in the plinth) add extra storage space • Internal fittings help organise cupboards • For appliances, choose multifunctional, compact, slimline, built-in and stacking versions • Reflective and/or transparent surfaces and pale colours make the room seem bigger • Base cabinets on legs or recessed plinths let you see more floor • Avoid visual confusion by sticking to ultra-plain cabinet fronts with either no handles or very discreet ones • Larger-than-average floor tiles make the floor seem larger

HEALTH

Should You Be Wary of Wheat? By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

If you suffer from bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach cramps or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), maybe you should be. However, ALWAYS see your GP (rather than self-diagnosing) if these symptoms are severe and persistent, especially if you have blood in your stools, vomiting, excessive bloating or very painful stomach cramps - it may indicate more serious medical conditions. Wheat allergy, wheat sensitivity/intolerance and Coeliac disease are often confused, so let’s get them straight.

50

Wheat Allergy If you are truly wheat allergic, eating wheat will rapidly provoke allergy symptoms such as itching, rashes, sneezing and wheezing. You’ll need to avoid wheat in any form and see your GP. Coeliac disease Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition that affects around 1% of people in the UK and often goes undiagnosed. In Coeliac sufferers, the intestinal lining becomes damaged because it can’t absorb gluten, a protein found in foods including wheat, barley and rye. Tiredness, hair loss, mouth ulcers, anaemia and unexpected weight loss, alongside gastrointestinal symptoms, can indicate Coeliac disease. Diagnosis is by a blood test and biopsy. Both tests are only accurate if you’re still eating gluten, so you’ll need to continue eating gluten until the tests are complete. If Coeliac disease is diagnosed, you must avoid gluten permanently.

Wheat Intolerance/Sensitivity Wheat intolerance or sensitivity is much more common than wheat allergy. Symptoms can develop some hours after eating wheat, which can make the condition hard to pinpoint, and it’s not something your GP can test for. Try eliminating wheat for four weeks to see if your symptoms improve (ensuring you replace it with healthy alternatives like rice, corn, buckwheat pasta and quinoa). Remember that wheat is in most breads, cakes, pastas, pastries, cereals, couscous, biscuits, beer, soy sauce and hydrolysed vegetable protein (HVP), and is a hidden ingredient in many other products. Keep a food diary in case another food type, such as dairy, is the culprit – but don’t eliminate whole food groups long-term without consulting your GP. Reintroduce wheat slowly (preferably starting with 100% wheat products). If

your symptoms reappear, it’s a good indication that you have wheat sensitivity; trial and error will tell you whether you’re sensitive to all wheat products or just some. This can depend on the process the wheat has undergone; some people can tolerate toast and pasta better than bread, because the heating process makes the wheat more digestible. Supermarket bread may be less digestible than traditional bakery bread, as supermarkets use an accelerated bread-making process. irritable Bowel Syndrome (iBS) If your symptoms don’t seem specifically tied to wheat, you may have IBS. While

the causes are not entirely clear, stress, illness, high-fat or high-fibre foods seem to precipitate attacks, making bowel function erratic and causing gastrointestinal symptoms. Probiotic supplements or foods can help, as can medication prescribed by your GP.

leading to diarrhoea and bloating. The FODMAP diet should be followed under a dietician’s guidance to ensure you stay healthy and follow it correctly, as it’s quite complex. Your GP can give you a referral.

Tackling Wheat Sensitivity and iBS: The FODMAP diet Designed originally for people with (IBS), the wheat-free low-FODMAP diet eliminates Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols - types of carbohydrates that aren’t easily digested and may cause bacterial growth,
