The Power of Walking Until recently, I’ve managed to keep the middle age spread fairly under control but since I stopped running due to my knees and hips protesting, I would probably be described by a stranger as “pleasantly plump”. So, in a bid to stop and reverse the situation I stepped up a gear when walking my dog and what a difference a bit of power makes. I now burn a respectable number of calories, start the day feel energised and I’m beginning to see the benefits of toning; all without those familiar joint aches and pains. I can’t say Dempsey enjoys this change of pace; we used to saunter along, I’d throw, he’d chase and we often casually stopped to have a chat with other walkers. But needs must, so he’ll have to get used to it (at least until I drop a dress size!). The advantage of having a dog is, of course, it gives purpose to walking. But not everyone has a dog. This leads to me share a website I discovered called www. borrowmydoggy.co.uk which matches dogs who love walking with dog-less people who love dogs and walking but are dog-less, for a variety of very good reasons. Dempsey is registered on the site and is safely “borrowed” on a regular basis. I think it’s a terrific idea! With the days getting longer and temperatures warming up, if you fancy stepping out but want company, join a local group, take part in The Itchen Walk for Rotary (see page 47) or even borrow a dog and it will know where to go! Until next issue,

Prince’s Trust young people transforms pre-school play area in Totton, creating a safer place to play A group of unemployed young people from Totton have rolled up their sleeves to make a difference to their local community. The young people are currently completing The Prince’s Trust Team programme with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, to give them the skills and confidence to find a job. The group spent a fortnight transforming a muddy run down play area into a safe place for Humpty Dumpty Pre-School at Winfrid’s church, Totton. During the 12-week course, they have been fundraising, helping communities and building their skills to help them find work. The 16 young people aged 16-25 years old, have been weeding and digging to erect a new shelter along with adding new plants to transform the garden into an area that the children can enjoy. They raised just over £450 by bag packing at Totton’s ASDA store, to allow them to complete the project.
Charlie Ashman, Princes Trust Team Leader said: “I couldn’t be prouder of the young people they’ve put their all into creating this play area for the pre-school. To see them playing with the children in the space they’ve created makes it all worthwhile.” The pre-school has been running since 1966, but the outside area was in desperate need of a facelift, having not been upgraded for the past 10 years. Ricky Dhanda, Detective Sergeant for Hampshire Constabulary, who supported Charlie and the team throughout the project said: “If you give young people the opportunity to reach their full potential then they can thrive. “This is a prime example of not writing young people off, but instead giving them a new challenge to fulfil their potential.” The group will spend the rest of their 12 week program run by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service completing work placements, improving their CV and preparing them for employment. Youth charity The Prince’s Trust is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. In the last four decades, it has given over 825,000 disadvantaged young people the skills and confidence to find a job. Three in four young people helped by The Prince’s Trust move into work, training or education. The Prince’s Trust team with children from Humpty Dumpty Pre-School.

HOME INTERIORS
Spruce Up Your Home Office A good desk is essential. The new Phineas desk is made from oak and has two cubby holes, drawers, and a cut-out for cables. It costs £545 from Loaf, tel 0845 468 0698; www.loaf.com.
Dodgy desk, awkward chair or overflowing shelves? It’s time to give your home office a facelift, says Katherine Sorrell.
Whether your working space is a corner of the kitchen used for catching up with email, or a high-spec office with everything necessary for fulltime self-employment, it needs to work for you. A few small improvements can make your workspace more comfortable, functional and attractive.
Copper storage baskets to bring some glamour. These cost £35, from MiaFleur, tel 0116 2986393; www.miafleur.com. 14
Start with a clear out and a tidy up: go through your old paperwork, stationery, books etc. and give it away, recycle it, file it well out of the way or bin it, as appropriate, and you’re bound to create extra space. Then, sort out messy cabling with extension leads, cable
clips or by adding an extra double plug socket. Next: your desk. If you are still running out of room, you could consider adding a small worktop to one side of your existing desk, or improve your organisation with a new desk that incorporates drawers, cubby holes, shelves or whatever other type of storage you need. If you can, use nearby walls to lift as much as possible off the surface of your desk by introducing wall-mounted storage such as shelves, pin boards, peg boards or hanging racks. Anything that stacks is useful, too. Before you know it, you’ll be able to see your laptop again. A lack of storage probably goes for home offices more than any other space in the house. You may be happy with buying a conventional filing cabinet and/or bookcase, but don’t be afraid to look beyond the usual office suppliers: vintage and

industrial pieces can add an element of unexpected style to brighten up your work time. Add boxes, baskets, trolleys, racks and desktop accessories in colours and textures that suit your space and personal style. If boring looks are the problem, then why not give everything a facelift with the paintbrush? Neutrals are undeniably good for concentration, but go for bold colours if they make you happy. Blackboard paint comes in a range of colours and is a great option for sections of walls, desk tops or cupboard fronts where you might want to chalk up some notes. And, how about adding pretty curtains or blinds, an eye-catching rug, a display of collectibles or a
Personalise your workspace (and provide a handy magnetic storage wall, too) with this Cockatiel printed magnetic wallpaper, £64.50, Sisters Guild; www.sistersguild.co.uk.
A comfortable chair is a must and an adjustable office chair on castors is best. If yours is dull or ugly, either re-upholster it, make a loose cover or, at worst, hang a length of fabric over the back and add an attractive cushion. Another essential is a good desk light – choose one that is bright, adjustable and that you love the look of. There’s an enormous choice, at prices to suit every budget. For the final details, add accessories to brighten up your life, from a good-looking waste bin to a house plant, some colourful wall art or a scented candle. Let’s face it, the more you enjoy being at work, the more productive you’ll be.

INTERVIEW
All Saints Fans of the nineties band All Saints, are celebrating their return – with a new single and album. Melanie and Natalie, who make up half of the group, caught up with The Breeze’s Lucy Ambache and talked reunions, families and reality TV. You are the band I wish I was a member of. Both: Oh thank you! You started out as an unmanufactured band. Did that just happen? Mel: Yes it did. We’d been going for years under different set ups and stuff like that. By the time the public were aware of us and we had ‘You Know Where It’s At’ out, we already felt like we’d been doing this for years. Are you enjoying being back together? Nat: We’re having so much fun. We spend more time laughing than anything. For me this reunion came a bit out of the blue. Who was the one who put in all the calls? Mel: Shaz always begged us to come back <laughs>. She actually got a call from Backstreet Boys asking whether we would support them on their UK tour a couple of years back and we all said yes. She was 18
inspired, started writing for us, and we all thought what she was doing was amazing. We got in the studio and had the best time ever. It’s a bit daunting that we’ve only got ourselves to blame! Do you feel that? Do you feel nervous with such a gap between your last work? Nat: It’s not even about that. It’s about enjoying what we have there’s no point worrying. Enjoy the moment, have fun and whatever happens, happens! Either way we’re happy and proud with what we’ve done. Mel: At our nice ripe old age, we know what our weaknesses and strengths are, we know who we are as people and we know and appreciate the love we have for each other as well. Let’s talk about the new song ‘One Strike’. For me, it’s All Saints but All Saints 2016. Is that what you intended because it works! Mel: I think it was just done naturally. There was no plan and no agenda – not even what style of music we should do for the album. We had one meeting at the beginning saying it just had to be good – and that was pretty much all we spoke about. Shaz picked the producers she wanted to work with and the feedback has been great. Is the single a good example of what the rest of the album sounds like? Mel: Definitely. I think if you’re
a fan of us, you will love this album as much as we do. Are you getting on the road with the album? Because you guys are internationally successful. Do you want to do the whole global thing again? Mel: If someone goes “hey guys do you want to perform over here” and we can be bothered, because we’re really lazy <laughs>, then we’ll go! So what have you been doing in the meantime? Mel: I was being a judge in New Zealand <on the New Zealand X-Factor> What kind of judge were you? Mel: Obviously a horrible one! I was very honest because I can’t help it. I was a really bad mentor but a really good judge. Nat, what have you been up to? Nat: Being really involved in my son’s life, growing up in school, and enjoying it and appreciating every second. I love my life and I’m very blessed with the family I have.

Grand National Park2Park 200 and Between the Parks 100 Keen cyclists can join Southampton CTC on 22 May for a new event, the Grand National Park2Park 200k. The course has been designed to enable riders to see something of Britain’s two newest National Parks as well as visiting some of the exceptional scenery in the countryside between them. As well as the rivers Test and Itchen, landmarks to look out for along the way include The Watercress Line at Ropley, The Georgian Silk Mill at Whitchurch and Romsey Abbey. Starting at Woodley Village Hall on the outskirts of Romsey,
the route sweeps north of Winchester entering the South Downs National Park. After a coffee stop in East Meon, the ride joins the Itchen Valley at Cheriton and then crosses the chalk hills to the Test Valley at Whitchurch. The ride is now in the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where participants enjoy lunch. After lunch, it’s south west towards the New Forest National Park. Just before tea at Downton, cyclists will meet the challenge of Dean Hill, a popular venue for hill climbs among local cycling clubs. Slower riders will probably be too late for tea
at the Borough Cafe in Downton but there be light refreshments to compensate. From tea, the route follows New Forest lanes to Godshill. It is then a fine fast spin across the Forest to rejoin the Test Valley at Romsey. The route is not flat but neither is it especially hilly. In fact, there are just enough hills to make things interesting. For those seeking a gentler day out, there is a 100km event using the same start, finish and lunch stop. GARDENING
The Grass Can Be Greener
Your garden should now be starting to look lush and green, with beds and borders beginning to come into their own. But if your lawn spoils it all, or you want to install one, now is the perfect time to get started.
Preparing the site Remove all weeds, large stones, debris and any old grass, then dig or fork over thoroughly to remove all taproots of weeds. Kill off an old lawn or a weed infested site with weedkiller based on glyphosate, then strip it off or dig it in once it all dies off. Incorporate organic matter to improve moisture retention on sandy soils; on heavy soils dig in grit and organic matter for drainage. Next, firm the whole area by treading it over evenly in flat-soled boots, then rake thoroughly and remove stones or other debris from the surface, treading gently down again if necessary.
Buying turf Buy turf from a reputable supplier which is suitable for your requirements – some, especially those including lots of dwarf ryegrass, are much tougher, while some contain a seed mixture for use in shade. A ‘bowling green’ effect may look superb but will need more maintenance and be less hardwearing. Avoid cheaper turf as it can contain weeds, pests or diseases, or is simply not a good grass mixture. Arrange delivery of turf when you need it and never store for more than two days. It can remain rolled up for up to 24 hours, but for any longer unroll immediately, lay out flat on paving or plastic sheeting and water regularly. Laying the turf Lay turves closely together and do not allow the edges to overlap. For an even finish, joins on each row
22
should be staggered, like bricks in a wall. Lay the first row of turf using the adjacent path or lawn edging to form a straight line to work to. Roll out each turf carefully so that the edge abuts onto its neighbour.
If you need a small section of turf to complete a row, add this in the middle of a row rather than at the end so it is less likely to be dislodged or dry out. For a curved edge lay the turves so that they overlap the new lawn edge and cut to shape.
Lay the next row, again ensuring that the long edges of each abut onto the long edges of the last row. To avoid damage, kneel on a plank placed over the previous row and continue until your new lawn is in position.
When finished, gently tamp the area over using the back of a rake and if any turves sink place some extra soil underneath until they are level. Finally, brush in a mixture of horticultural sand and finely sieved soil over the surface,
ensuring that gaps between the turves are filled in. Care and maintenance Gently water the new lawn using a sprinkler, ensuring that the water penetrates right down to the root level. Water regularly in dry weather, particularly for the first couple of months whilst the roots establish and avoid walking on it during this time. You will soon have a gorgeous lawn to be proud of.

BEAUTY
Gently Does It By Kate Duggan: www.kateduggan.co.uk
This month we’re talking oils, hair dyes and (ouch) waxing. Summer is just around the corner, so we can no longer hide away under layers of winter woollies…
We beauty writers tend to focus on new launches. We’re a bit like magpies – easily distracted by new shiny things. But this month I thought I’d celebrate an underrated classic – Fenjal. Just a whiff of the bath oil conjures up images of my grandma, who’s used it since I was tiny. I’m reminded of her every time I open my Fenjal Classic Shower Oil, £5.49, but that’s not the only reason I love it. Packed with natural oils, including grapeseed and soy, it leaves my skin feeling really soft and lightly scented. I’m a big fan of botanical oils and use at least one every day. On my ‘to-buy’ list is andiroba oil. And it’s not just me; according to Lorraine Dallmeier of Formula Botanica, this golden Central American oil has ‘attracted great interest from the cosmetic industry in recent years for its potential anti-inflammatory properties.’ She explains, ‘This oil will nourish your dry and sensitive skin and as an added bonus, it will also repel insects, which makes it an ideal choice for packing when you go on your summer holiday!’ Fancy

learning more about natural oils? Formula Botanica has a wide range of online courses, teaching students how to select and blend natural skincare ingredients. Light coloured hair can easily look dull and lifeless, so my go-to hair shampoo this month is the PRO:VOKE Touch Of Silver Brightening Shampoo. I start by prepping with the Pre-Toning Primer, which adds shine and smooths cuticles. The shampoo’s violet pigment then helps to neutralise brassiness and protect my colour. Finally, the intensive conditioner undoes some of the damage caused by my highlighting habit. Plus, as the range starts at just £3.19 in Boots, it doesn’t break the bank.
of the simplest ways to ensure hair-free legs for longer. The wax is easy to melt in the microwave, and the fabric strips are strong enough to reuse a few times. (Tip: dust a fine layer of baby powder over your skin before waxing, as it helps to make the wax easier to remove.)
As mentioned, my hair is feeling a little hard-done-by at the moment, so I’m giving it a rest from bleaching. Instead, I’m using Naturtint, £10.99, to refresh the colour and cover the grey. Probably the gentlest home-colour on the market, Naturtint doesn’t contain any ammonia, parabens, SLS, mineral oils, paraffin, or silicones, so it doesn’t damage my hair. It’s also enriched with
plant and seed oils, so leaves my locks really shiny. I’ve hauled my summer clothes out of the loft, and my thick tights have been banished to the back of the drawer for another few months. Unfortunately, that means there’s no escaping the need to regularly de-fuzz. If you’re brave enough to wax, Parissa Warm Wax, £12.99, is one

FINANCE
Worried about losing your job? Your rights as an employee
If your employer is struggling financially, you might be worried about losing your job. Many companies go into administration rather than liquidation, however, which means that it’s not necessarily the end for the business.
Companies can be restructured and sold on as a ‘going concern,’ with staff being transferred over to a new employer under strict protective regulations. Unfortunately, other companies do enter a liquidation process which effectively closes them down, and results in the unavoidable loss of all jobs. Your employer goes into administration The process of administration provides a breathing space for your employer to obtain professional advice, and consider all possible options to save the company. They may be experiencing temporary cash flow problems, in which case there’s a chance the business could be sold on. If this happens, the first 14 days are crucial for employees.
30
• If you’re made redundant during this period, you become an ‘ordinary creditor’ and are placed at the bottom of the list for payment. • If you’re retained as an employee after the initial 14-days, this makes you a ‘preferential creditor’ and puts you in a better position financially if you’re made redundant later on. What you can claim as a preferential creditor You’ll be able to claim for: • Any salary or commission outstanding for the four months leading up to closure, up to a maximum of £800 in total. • Up to six weeks of accrued holiday pay. • Some occupational pension payments. It’s often the case, though, that insufficient funds are
generated from the sale of business assets to pay most creditors. In these instances you can turn to the National Insurance Fund for help. The National Insurance Fund (NIF) The National Insurance Fund holds cash reserves that cover payments including redundancy, salary and holiday pay. You may be entitled to make a claim in this way if: • You’ve not been able to obtain full payment as a preferential creditor. • You were made redundant during the first 14 days of administration. • The company was liquidated straight away. At the time of writing, the limit on payments via the National Insurance Fund is £475 per week, with £14,250 being the maximum amount of statutory redundancy pay available in each case. When the period of administration ends The worst-case scenario at the end of administration is that the company closes down. All jobs will be lost, but you may be eligible to
claim the redundancy pay mentioned above, depending on certain criteria. You must have worked for your employer for a continuous period of two years in order to be eligible, with the amount due being based on your weekly pay, age, and the length of time that you’ve worked at the same place. The process of transferring to a new company If your employer’s business has been sold to another company, specific rules protect your rights as an employee. The Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment), or TUPE legislation, ensures that employment terms and conditions at the point of transfer are protected in the main. This is a reassuring aspect in what is often an unsettling experience for members of staff. What happens if the business is liquidated? During a liquidation process, all business assets have to be sold in order to generate as much cash as possible to repay creditors. Unfortunately this often means that employees get very little, if any money, which is where claiming via the NIF is extremely helpful.

BAKING
Chocolate Chip & Nut Biscotti
These crisp Italian biscuits are baked twice to give them that extra crunch. Serve them with strong coffee or a sweet dessert wine for dipping. Makes approx 20 biscuits Ready in 50 minutes 50g butter, softened 100g caster sugar 1 medium egg, beaten 2 tsp orange zest 175g plain flour, plus extra for shaping 1/2 tsp baking powder 40g blanched hazelnuts, roughly chopped 40g dark chocolate chips
1. Preheat the oven to 180C, 350F, Gas 4. Line a large baking sheet with baking parchment. 2. Put the butter and sugar in a bowl and beat together with a wooden spoon until very pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the egg and orange zest. 3. Sift over the flour and baking powder and add the hazelnuts and chocolate chips. Knead on a lightly floured surface to a soft dough, adding a little more flour if the dough seems sticky. 4. Divide the dough into two pieces and using lightly floured hands shape each to a 18cm x 8cm log. Place on the baking sheet, well spaced apart, and flatten each one slightly with the palm of your hands. 5. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until firm and light golden. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and leave to cool for about 10 minutes. 6. Carefully transfer the two logs to a chopping board. Use a serrated knife to cut each log on the diagonal into 9-10 slices. Return all the slices, cut-side down, to the baking sheet and bake for a further 10-15 minutes until crisp and golden brown. 7. Transfer the biscotti to a cooling rack and leave to cool completely. They will keep in an airtight container for 2-3 weeks. TIP For a flavour variation, replace the nuts and chocolate chips with sweetened dried cranberries and mixed peel.

HOBBIES
The Alluring Art of Decoupage By Kate McLelland
These days decoupage is becoming increasingly popular as a means to upcycle old pieces of furniture or household items such as lamps, boxes, pots, trays and picture frames. It can be used to transform just about any item in the home and the artwork can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. Just cut out pictures that you like, glue them to the item of your choice and cover the finished piece with thin layers of varnish to seal it.
36
Craft shops sell a wide range of supplies for decoupage but the good thing about this hobby is that you don’t necessarily need to spend large amounts of money to get started: in fact you probably have most of the things you need lying around at home. You’ll need basic tools such as scissors (a sharp pair with clean edges), a craft knife, a soft sponge or cloth to wipe away excess adhesive, cotton wool buds for removing small spots of glue and fine sandpaper for sanding layers of varnish (if required). You can use different types of adhesive but the most effective is specialist decoupage glue – available from hobby shops – which can be used both as a glue and as a varnish. PVA or spray glue are good alternatives, as both dry to a clear finish. Always use a gloss varnish to build up layers, as it doesn’t go cloudy, no matter how many coats you apply. If you want a matt finish, undercoat with gloss varnish and then apply a final coat of matt varnish.
There are virtually no limits when it comes to sourcing pictures for decoupage work. You can pick up books in charity shops, raid old magazines for images, use wallpaper, greetings cards, paper napkins or even pieces of fabric. Wrapping paper is an ideal thickness and is available in traditional and modern designs. You can also use specialist decoupage papers or origami paper.
Here are some guidelines to help you get started on a project: 1. Prepare your surface: the varnish will magnify any imperfections so it’s important to keep your object as clean and dustfree as possible. 2. Select your pictures and arrange them: cut out roughly with scissors first then experiment with different arrangements. It helps to take photos as you go so you can remember the different layouts you’ve tried. When you
are completely happy with the images and arrangement, cut the pictures out carefully with a craft knife. 3. Glue the pictures into position: quickly smooth out any wrinkles and remove any excess glue with a barely damp sponge.
Regular Cleans
End of Tenancy & Spring Cleans
ARW Cleaning Professional Domestic Cleaning Services
4. Varnish your artwork: make sure the glue is completely dry before starting work and leave the varnish to dry thoroughly between each coat. You may need to apply anything from 4 to up to 15 coats, depending on how thick the paper is and how smooth and durable you want the finish to be. If you’re still a little nervous about starting your own project, you’ll find plenty of “How to” videos on YouTube that demonstrate the process from beginning to end. It won’t be long until you have mastered the basic techniques. The only downside is that decoupage is so simple and effective, you may be tempted to transform every object in your house!

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Totton &
Ashurst area and manager Justin Friel agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be
