Winter break

Tania Houston

My family and I go skiing for a few days just before Christmas each year (not as busy as Christmas itself, and much cheaper). Unfortunately, last December I took a heavy fall, the result of which was a dislocated shoulder and a fractured arm. The local doctor saw me within the hour, popped my arm back into its socket (I know, ‘ouch’ doesn’t do it justice), and confirmed the break with ‘je suis désolé, no more skiing zis week’. Back in the UK I had amazing service from the NHS. I saw my GP on Christmas Eve, a consultant at Winchester hospital on the 28th December, and a physiotherapist as soon as the fracture was healed. However, six months later, I still couldn’t lift my arm above shoulder height, and I wasn’t being offered a long term improvement plan. A friend recommended a shoulder specialist to me but advised that if I wanted to have this fixed sooner rather than later I’d have to pay to have private treatment. I don’t have private health insurance, so my record showed the treatment would be (polite euphemism) ‘self-funded’. The recommendation was an ultrasound guided steroid injection into the shoulder, followed by specialist physiotherapy. Consultant – injection – physio all within a fortnight of each other. It wasn’t cheap but neither was it out-of-the-question expensive. After months of no change, it all started moving again. I’m not knocking the NHS; we are incredibly fortunate to have that service. But they don’t always have the budget for specialist attention and even if they do, it’s a wait. As everyone always says ‘you can’t put a price on good health’. Spire Southampton (page 33) offer Self-Pay including finance options.

GARDENING

Brilliant Bulbs by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com

It is spring bulb time in all the garden centres now.

Every one up and down the country should be crammed full of bulbs, many at an incredibly reasonable price, and all of which promise to provide glorious masses of colour, sometimes with scent, for many years to come. By all means plant bulbs in beds and borders, but make this the year that you are a touch more adventurous and, if you don’t have any open ground in your garden and do your gardening purely on a terrace, patio or in a back yard, then don’t forget that there are still plenty of bulb planting opportunities to be had! Bulbs have the potential to make any garden look gorgeous but you can use them to add an element of fun as well as glamour, colour and perfume. Bulbs look fantastic if allowed to naturalise beneath trees, but if you’ve no space for trees then miniature bulb varieties look equally good beneath shrubs. Simply choose a suitable selection such as miniature daffodils or crocuses and plant them in a random or scattered effect beneath the shrub, taking care to minimise damage to the shrub’s roots. Keep them well watered in spring and you should have a fantastic display.

10

On special occasions you may have been sent some flowers and these are often delivered in ornamental plastic-lined woven baskets, which are also available inexpensively from local markets or on the internet. These make perfect planting containers provided they are at least 3” (8 cm) deep. Shallower baskets can be used for smaller bulbs such as crocuses - simply fill them with bulb fibre and then plant up in the same way as you would a bowl of bulbs for an indoor display. To ensure that drainage is definitely not a problem, puncture some holes in the plastic liner and then use any normal multipurpose or loam based compost mixture. Baskets like this look particularly decorative in the spring, and if you add a couple of ferns or ivies to larger baskets they will look even better. Make use of an outdoor table which is normally left out throughout the year. In spring it is unlikely that you are going to use it for outdoor entertaining, so simply cover it to prevent the surface being spoiled and arrange a selection of pots full of spring bulbs on it – the effect can be really splendid and will make eating out of doors even more fun and stylish.

An old bucket - particularly an enamelled or galvanized one - makes a fabulous planter, but remember to drill some holes in the base, or if this isn’t possible, ensure that you place a layer of pebbles or grit at least 2” (5cm) deep in the bottom, so that excess water accumulates below the level of the roots and the bulbs do not rot off. If your garden or back yard is a good size, then make sure that you use some large containers as these look particularly handsome if you can afford the space. Packed full of a single variety of one of the daffodils or tulips or any other spring bulbs, they will look absolutely gorgeous and make a very striking and bold display. Plant the container up in two layers, so that one lot of bulbs is planted a couple of inches deeper than the other, and you will find that the display is prolonged slightly as the deeper ones will flower somewhat later than those planted closer to the surface

Beautiful lawn - No sweat!

If you want something really wacky, why not consider using an old bathroom suite or parts of it to make some very unusual planters? A bath may need a lot of compost to fill it – and don’t forget that good drainage will be necessary - but it can act like a full-sized flowerbed. Even a hand basin, lavatory or perhaps just the cistern can be planted up to great effect. For a truly ornamental look, put an old watering can or wheelbarrow to good use by turning it into a planter; it’s the sort of thing you pay a fortune for in a garden centre! And then, guess how to make a decrepit pair of wellies or the pair of boots with a hole in them look fun: yes, these too make wonderful bulb containers! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and make the best use of your vegetable plot rather than leaving it empty over winter, with Pippa’s ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ collection of vegetables for planting next month, along with a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including Nemaslug to control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, pull-out mini tunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Leisure Centre Project Moves Forward The mix of facilities for a new leisure centre in Winchester has been decided. The next stage for the project is to prepare a business case. Winchester City Council’s Cabinet and Council have agreed that a replacement for the 40-year-old River Park Leisure Centre, proposed at Bar End in Winchester, should have a 50m swimming pool, 12-court sports hall, four squash courts, a fitness gym with studios, a hydrotherapy pool and other state-of-the-art facilities. The key decision means that the project can progress to the next stage - preparing a formal business case that assesses the crucial issue of funding alongside elements such as land ownership, transport and commissioning building designs.

MOTORING

An Interview With Lewis Hamilton... By James Baggott

He’s a British hero and an F1 champion and just after he won the British Grand Prix, we were lucky enough to be a part of a small group of journalists who were given the chance to chat with Lewis Hamilton at the launch of the new Mercedes-AMG GT R.

He wouldn’t drive in any other series than F1 On the subject of racing in something like the Nurburgring 24-hour race, he said: “I like that I can take [the AMG GT R] around the Nurburgring and have a lot of fun, but I don’t really have any desire to race anything else. The problem is, once you come out of F1, everything else is a step down.”

Here’s what we learned about his views on road cars, racing outside F1 and gaining an inch…

At 31 years old, though, he acknowledges he’s heading towards the end of his career, saying: “That might change. I’ve been driving since I was eight years old, so when I stop racing I’m probably going to have massive withdrawal and want to drive something…” Danger is exciting Although no car racing appeals to Hamilton, he does say he’d like to have a go in MotoGP, because even riding his bike on the motorway is scary, “so imagine what it must be like at the speeds those guys are going.” On the subject of danger and improving safety, he says: “One of the exciting factors is when we get in that car and we know the danger factor is there. When I see Niki [Lauda], he’s just awesome, he’s a legend, he drove in a time when people were dying

18

often. Obviously we’ve lost a couple of drivers in the last few years…I think it is important for us in the sport to always be considering [safety] and always be working on it, but I hope the danger’s always going to be there, because otherwise anyone could do it.” Bikes beat cars His garage might be full of luxury motors, but he rarely drives them, preferring to keep the mileage low and the value appreciating. Instead of driving: “I usually ride my motorbike. Sometimes if I get home and I want to unwind I might take the car out, but I want to keep the mileage low on all my cars! So I don’t ever really go that far.” He thinks he’s matured For someone who has a reputation for speaking his mind, Hamilton portrays a calm aura and claims his years in racing have matured him. He said: “Age, I’m sure, has helped, but as you grow with the team…you realise your place in the team, you know, what I say to the camera is what the guys back at the factory hear me say, and you realise that you’re affecting all of those people with the

things you say, so I’m conscious of those things.” In a sign of the relaxed maturity we rarely see from him during race weekends, he says it’s important to keep perspective when you have a technical fault that’s out of your hands. His engine has 508 different settings Hamilton had a tough time in Baku after his team put him in the wrong engine setting. Team radio rules didn’t let them tell him how to fix it, which prompted a discussion about F1’s regulations. He acknowledged having fast, technical racing that’s also exciting is a difficult balance to find, but said: “It’s insane how much stuff we have to study… the problem is they’ve made the cars so technical. Of the engine switches I have, one is just one to

14, and the other is one to 14, but in each of those settings is another 10 options.” His colleague then mentioned that they’d calculated there are 508 possible combinations. He does what he likes Away from the paddock, Hamilton has grown a reputation for enjoying a celebrity lifestyle, and has been seen having fun on jet skis on holiday. Does the team tell him to reign in his extra-curricular activities? “When I was at McLaren I said ‘these are the things I like to do, just so you’re aware’ and when I joined this team I already told them ‘these are the things I do, I’m not gonna stop!’ You know, I’m conscious, I never want to watch someone else drive my car, so I try to be as sensible as I can whilst having fun, which isn’t always the easiest balance.”

He wants to be a development driver “I was talking to Tobias [Moers, AMG boss] and I was like ‘you’ve got all this Formula 1 technology and you have the Formula 1 world champion driving your car – utilise that!” With all his experience behind the wheel, Hamilton clearly sounds frustrated when he describes wanting to change things about cars when he drives them. To get around that, the three-time world champion wants to do a “limited edition series, which I can test, which I can set up and be handson with the design.”

New Chapter For Stanmore Library Building A building that used to house a library in Stanmore has been converted to social rented accommodation. The Council has been carrying out works since February to convert the building into a one-bedroom ground-floor flat. The cost of the works is approximately £37,000 - much cheaper than building a new property of the same size. Works included alteration of the layout to provide a one-bedroom property, new windows and doors, a new kitchen, bathroom, electrical re-wiring, boiler and heating system and providing a parking space. Cllr Caroline Horrill said: “There are currently over 2,000 applicants on the Council’s Housing Register waiting for appropriate housing and a high proportion require one-bedroom accommodation so this unit is a welcome addition to the housing available in the Winchester district.” Angela Pittman, the new tenant at Library House, said: “It is brilliant that I have been offered a tenancy with Winchester City Council. I am very happy. The property is lovely. It means a lot to me. It will help me get on with my life after being in temporary accommodation with shared facilities for a number of years.”

Lucy Ambache talks to

CORINNE BAILEY RAE

With over five million albums sold to date, Corinne Bailey Rae has had a stellar decade in the music industry. With a new album out, she spoke to The Breeze’s Lucy Ambache about music, the joys of working in L.A. and the dangers of curly hair when you live in Leeds.

By Lucy Ambache

You’ve been missing in action for quite a while - 6 years to be exact. You don’t make a quick album do you? I don’t. No, I love to take my time. I really enjoy the process – I love writing songs, I love travelling and meeting new people, and working with new musicians. I’ve really learnt a lot about being a producer on this record. I probably took more time than I needed to, because I was loving it so much.

It’s called ‘The Heart Speaks In Whispers’. Give me the lowdown. Well the album is all about listening to the inner voice – quietening down all the chaos and drama that surrounds us to find out what’s going on inside. How nature, our bodies, our subconscious, our instincts all tell us about what’s happening in our heart. You make a lady look glamorous with a guitar. You’ve always done that as a singer songwriter but with femininity.

Well I wanted to have those heels on I guess! I love playing guitar and when I first started, I was in an indie band where it was all baby doll dresses and we all wanted to be Courtney Love. Now I feel that I’m coming into my own style.

The album was made half in Leeds, half in LA right?

I built a studio in Leeds. After my last record I wanted to have somewhere I could put all my instruments, and be playful, and we managed to make it a scene we really liked. Then we thought it would be great to go to Los Angeles and work with some different musicians – some who had been on my wish-list for a long time. But you still love being in Leeds?

I do! I guess I grew up there, both my parents are there, my sister is there at the moment, and I think it has a really good music scene. But I also like getting on the aeroplane and getting to travel as well so I feel lucky that I get to do both things. Your music travels really far doesn’t it? It has given you the ability to go around the world.

It’s a really funny thing when you release records because you never know who’s going to get to hear them. My first record was on tape in India, which I didn’t know and I’ve got friends who say things like ‘I’ve just got back from Thailand and you were playing in the restaurant’ so it’s amazing because I feel my songs have got to places I haven’t got to yet.

One of the songs on the album is titled ‘Hey I Won’t Break Your Heart’. Come on, you can’t guarantee that!

That song’s interesting because it’s about love the second time around with the same person. It’s about doing it and thinking ‘you have really hurt me but let’s trust each other’. I think as you get older, you have these crazy experiences in love and it’s not just some cookie cutter, puppy dog thing. It can be really intense. 30

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes

@groomsdaybook groomsdaybook.com

At 8am on Saturday morning, I awoke to the prospect of a blissful day spent pleasing no one but Yours Truly. Such is the joy of having grown up kids - no more gymnastics, swimming or football practice - hurrah! So, what to do? A stroll round the park with Olly, my faithful hound? A trip to the corner shop to splurge four quid on a ream of newsprint? A long leisurely morning in the kitchen creating my signature dish jambon et œuf buttie à la sauce tomate? Unfortunately, my hopes for the perfect Saturday morning were dashed by my dearly beloved Sarah, who had the answer for which I hadn’t been searching: “Tom, are we finally going to clear out that garage?”

dedicated hoarding and with my wallpaper paste board firmly secured on the roof rack, we headed off to a dusty farmer’s field located somewhere in the neighbouring parish.

Knowing that resistance was useless, I peered through the dusty gloom and began yanking old bikes, boxes of records and other long forgotten bric-a-brac from the darkest recesses of the garage. Then my eureka moment: “Sarah I’ve had a brilliant idea - and don’t look at me like that let’s take this lot to the car boot sale!”

“How much for this zip?” she enquired.

Realising that the car boot bee was firmly stuck in my entrepreneurial bonnet, Sarah reluctantly agreed and so, with the Mondeo Ghia packed to the gunwales with twenty years of 36

In very short order I had set out my stall. Sylvanian houses to my left, fondue set to my right, golf shoes (worn once) in the middle. And so, with my thermos gently steaming, we waited for the hordes of bargain hunters to descend. Eventually a wizened old dear, nearly bent over double, shuffled up to our makeshift emporium. She rattled one of my Tupperware containers (helpfully marked odds and sods) as I craned my neck in an attempt to catch her drift.

I examined the dusty old fastener. “Err, that particular item, madam, is five pence.” “Is that your best price?” “Yes.” “I’ll leave it thanks.” As the ancient shopper shuffled away, Sarah began testily rearranging her gnomes. “Tom, If we’d just gone to the tip we’d be home by now.” “Did you know Lord Sugar began on a market stall?” Just then I spotted a mature

gentleman sporting a handle-bar moustache and wearing a tatty blue blazer surreptitiously rifling through my collection of 45s (for anyone born after 1986, 45s are small plastic discs which when placed on a turntable produce music). I observed him as he carefully examined the soundtrack of my youth. Then he paused, replaced the discs in the cardboard box, and as his fingers danced gently across the dog eared covers said, “How much do you want for this lot?” Giddy with the expectation of my first sale, I was just about to announce the very reasonable figure of a tenner when Sarah stepped forward and said, “Twenty five please.” Fearful of losing the deal I decided to give the old chap some encouragement. “But we will take less!” As the gentlemen wandered off Sarah glared at me and said, “By the way, I’ve put your application for The Apprentice in the bin.” “You scared him off with that ridiculous price!” As the argument continued Mr Handlebar reappeared and asked, “Will you take twenty?” Suddenly, the thought of my precious collection falling into the hands of this chancer had me incensed. Are you trying to insult me? Twenty!?” “Tom, we’re not in a Souk. Take the money and shut up.” As the clouds gathered we packed up and headed home,

a total of £37.18 to the good. The following week I was sitting quietly enjoying Bargain Hunt when Sarah plopped the local rag into my lap. “Recognise him?” She pointed to an article entitled ‘Local Collector Unearths Rare Madonna Imported Single’. “I knew there was something

dodgy about that moustache!” “What I’m more worried about is the thought of a teenage Tom prancing around his bedroom singing along to ‘Holiday’.” And so the happy memories of a gilded youth recede just a little further into the distance... 37

Put The ‘Oomph’ Back Into Your Computer We all want fast, uncluttered computers but while some ‘in-built’ system tools are useful and anti-virus software stops many threats to your security, so much ‘flotsam & jetsam’ - literally thousands of files - can build up over time, clogging up and slowing down your computer. With the ever increasing amount of malicious software (malware) that creeps past defences bombarding us with ads and redirecting us all

over the place, you should be forgiven for thinking all is lost and the best place for your computer is the local tip! However in the majority of cases, computer performance can be dramatically improved by clearing out the nasties and the junk, getting rid of conflicting and ‘gimmicky’ utilities. If you really want your machine to ‘fly’, cloning (think ‘Dolly the Sheep’) your original hard disk to a Solid State Drive is the way.

These are disks with no moving parts and operate 7-10 times faster than their traditional counterparts. Put it all together and you get a clean machine with a faster hard disk and a much more enjoyable user experience. Art Deco Style By Katherine Sorrell Artworks Art Deco bathroom, Original Style, 01392 473000; www.originalstyle.com

Decadent Deco Art Deco never goes out of fashion – and, according to a recent survey, it’s the nation’s favourite design style. We take a look at the history of this glamorous, goodlooking movement.

Art Deco house number stained glass-effect window film, from £45 per sq m, Purlfrost, 020 8992 4024; www.purlfrost.com. 44

The Roaring Twenties – think jazz, flappers, slick automobiles, the talkies and skyscrapers: it was all about glamour, drama and modernity. Consumerism had arrived, and the timing was right for a new style. Also known as Art Moderne, Jazz Moderne or simply Deco, Art Deco style was rooted in the world of pre-First World War leading French design, but only became widely recognised after the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. French designers were combining classical features and rare, luxury materials with exciting new influences such as contemporary art, the exotic Ballets Russes and a fascination with all things Egyptian, as well as the art and artefacts of Japan, Africa, native America, Mexico and the Middle East. Early Art Deco furniture was exclusive and luxurious, made from costly materials such as hardwoods, lacquer, mother of pearl, shark skin, tortoiseshell and leather, and frequently featured extravagant veneering and inlaid decoration. However, as the style spread, designers

employed the latest technologies and less expensive materials, such as stainless steel, chrome and Bakelite plastic. In the States it became known as Streamlining, and its curvy lines were the must-have look for new buildings, with a fine example being the 102-storey Empire State Building, completed in 1931. In terms of furniture, the Art Deco look was low and upright in design, featuring geometric outlines with rounded corners, and often the shell, fan or sunburst shapes that are key to this style. The coffee table and the cocktail cabinet had recently been invented. Fitted kitchens became increasingly widespread, while the Art Deco bathroom featured solid yet elegant shapes and glamorous looks, with plenty of chrome and bevelled-edge mirror. To decorate walls, botanicals or geometrics were frequent motifs, while upmarket homes might have lacquer or wood panelling, mirror tiles or even trompe l’oeil murals. This was the era of parquet flooring, perhaps with the addition of a zebra skin or a boldly abstract rug. High-

end soft furnishings were sumptuous and costly, with silk and velvet desirable. However, as the look filtered down, cotton, chenille and moquette gained in popularity, often featuring graphic patterns in bold colours or monochrome. The arrival of electric light and the widespread use of electric fittings resulted in striking design and the use of ground-breaking materials such as aluminium, plywood, tubular steel, plastic or pressed glass; typical styles included pendant lights made from marbled glass and hung from chains, ziggurat, shell or fan-shaped wall lights, and columnbased table lamps boasting Art Deco motifs. Accessories and ornaments were key, from Clarice Cliff’s ceramics

to Bakelite radios, cocktail shakers and silver dressing table sets. Over time Art Deco design became less sophisticated and more mass-produced and, especially in 1930s Britain, more utilitarian and suburban. Though still ground-breaking, it was commercialised to the point of kitsch. House builders included rounded bay windows, doorways with stepped surrounds and garden gates with sunrise motifs. Brightly coloured zigzags, chevrons, exotic animals and stylised flowers were added to furnishings, accessories and homeware – and thus a luxurious look originally available only to the few became an everyday style found in ordinary homes.

Mould, Damp or Salt on the Walls? Almost every homeowner at some time in their life experiences damp problems. Mildew, efflorescence (salts on the surface of the wall) and blistering plaster means it needs treating as soon as possible and the plaster replacing with a “breathable” alternative. BKM Mannesmann UK ltd has a simple but technologically advanced treatment system for rising and penetrative damp. The process protects, inside or outside walls of all construction types and materials.

The technology is developed from extensive experience in Germany and is now available in your area. The BKM product microscopically coats all the pores in the material, creating a hydrophobic barrier in all types of brick, stone-work, masonry, cement and lime render. It can be “gravity-fed” or pressure infused into the walls, dependent upon the condition of the wall. BKM also has an external breathable wall protection application, which seals all types of render, salt impregnated brickwork. Lime based paints and render can also be protected under

the 25-year Guarantee. Christian Franceschi, Regional Director for BKM Mannesmann UK ltd, says, “Thanks to this publication, there are many people in Hampshire & Wiltshire who have recently installed our system and are extremely Christian Franceschi, satisfied with Regional Director BKM Mannesmann Uk ltd the results” FOR YOUR FREE survey, contact Christian email: c.franceschi@bkmmannesmann.com or call him on: 01962 940 005 www.bkm-mannesmann.com
