MARTIN HARLEY BLUES AND ROOTS 19 November, 8pm Winchester Discovery Centre 01962 873603 Martin Harley is a supremely talented Roots and Blues guitarist, singer and songwriter with a burgeoning global reputation. He’s a devotee to the music that came out of the Mississippi Delta, the slide guitar, and many other forms of roots music. Though Harley’s sound is rooted in the blues it seeks to tell his own story and draws on the ruminations of a musician who has spent much of his life on the road. Martin Harley s British Americana sound is influenced by Delta Blues and Gyspy Swing. Renowned for his prowess as a slide guitarist, Martin is almost unique in the UK in

his playing lap slide. During constant worldwide touring he has honed his craft into the classic songwriting style he possesses today, the result is a road worn style of song writing that Guitarist Magazine describes as staggeringly good, no one is making music like it.

HEDGE END

But with the advent of the internet, all our shopping ‘needs’ are satisfied from home, and shopping ‘wants’ fall by the wayside, so we’ve found that we don’t go in as often. Some interesting figures supplied to us by Winchester City Council in part reflects that. Day trips to Winchester have fallen by 3.6% since 2014. However, there are more overnight visitors to the city, they are spending more, and the number of people from overseas has increased in 2 years by a massive 9.2%. In all the value of tourism to Winchester grew from around £300m in 2011, to £358m by the end of 2015. Partly this growth is driven by marketing from campaigns by Visit Britain and Visit Winchester. No doubt the drop in the value of the £ will encourage even more people. Anyway, seeing these facts did remind me of how lovely Winchester city is, and never more so than at Christmas with the ice rink (which will be covered this year) and the market, the beautiful lights, the regular stalls in the High Street and the general buzz of being with other people.

STOCKBRIDGE SALISBURY EAST VILLAGES

Years ago, going into Winchester on a Saturday was a regular trip for us. It’s a beautiful city at any time of the year, so we’d come in for a browse round the shops or a picnic in the grounds of the cathedral.

And Another Thing...

Tom and the christmas lights

by Tom Hughes

The crisp December air vaporised my breath as I skidded across the drive, shaking the last of the table salt onto the flags as I went. Suddenly I was blinded by a terrible seasonal apparition. Mrs Murphy, my neighbour from over the road, had flicked on her Christmas lights. I staggered back as spots danced before my eyes. The strain on my pupils (not to mention the National Grid) was all too apparent as Mrs Murphy’s much-extended semi-detached hummed into life. Reindeer, gnomes and, bizarrely, a festive ET, blazed out across The Avenue - Yuletide beacons for any passing sleighs or low-flying aircraft.

“This isn’t a competition dear. Don’t worry - Santa comes down all the chimneys, even the poorly decorated ones.”

“Just for that, you can sort this lot out.” Whereupon the Gordian knot, otherwise known as tangled fairy lights, was handed to me by Sarah.

Tripping into the house I stamped my feet on the bristles. “Disneyland is back on again.”

“Well it’s your own fault for stuffing them back in like that last January!” This way and that I wrestled with the blasted cord until finally I managed to straighten them out. Eventually the plastic Christmas tree was wonkily placed in the porch and decorated with baubles, dusty Santas and the lights. More out of hope than expectation, I plugged them in. “Right - ready? By the way, before I switch these on, is it too late to call one of the Spice Girls?”

The loft ladders gave their familiar groan as I eased myself up into the eaves. The dusty boxes that we’d taken down from the last loft ten years ago sat impassively - inured to the passage of time. After much scratching and cursing (which sadist invented fibreglass?) I managed to locate our box of decorations. Sarah regarded them. “Tom, they

I stared at the rows of glittery kitsch in the temporary pop-up Christmas shop. Which illuminated Santa should I purchase? They all looked equally gaudy. Haplessly, I asked a swarthy-looking gentleman sat at the till. He was head down with his eyes glued to a smart phone, so I cleared my throat to attract his attention. “This one, or this one?” I asked.

Sarah glanced through the porch door. “Well I think it’s lovely. She goes to so much trouble and it makes me feel so Christmassy. Speaking of decorations - isn’t about time you made your annual pilgrimage?”

10

are pathetic. If we put those up, Mrs Murphy’s effort will put us to shame.”

“Tom, stop messing about and flick the switch.” Phiszzz. The lights glowed, then popped, then… nothing. “Right! That’s it - go and find some decent decorations!”

The plastic beaming Santas smiled blindly at the opposite wall. The assistant stared at me blankly then went back to Angry Birds. I bought both. Back home, Sarah grabbed both my Santas, went outside and nailed them violently to the wall. And so the big day, as it always does, came around. The Christmas dinner was almost ready. As the whole brood chatted happily, I strained to listen to Her Majesty the Queen on the telly while Sarah’s famous bread sauce bubbled on the hob. Then out of the window I noticed that Mrs Murphy’s house was in total darkness. Ignoring Sarah’s complaints about ruining my new slippers, I tip-toed across the road and tapped on the window. Eventually Mrs Murphy appeared. “Are you OK?” I asked hopefully. “No, Mr Hughes, I’m waiting for the emergency electrician but it might be hours yet. My daughter is in London with her boyfriend but...” Mrs Murphy’s tears suddenly began to well up. “Oh Mr Hughes, Christmas isn’t the same since Henry passed away.” “So you’re on your own in this dark cold house?” “I’m going to put my camper stove on to warm up

some soup.” “On Christmas Day? Mrs Murphy - grab your coat.” And so, for the first time ever, Mrs Murphy crossed our threshold and sat down with us for Christmas dinner. Outside the elves and Santas were in darkness, but inside our house the warmth of our toast to Mrs Murphy (sat imperiously on her emergency chair) gave her a smile bright enough to illuminate any seasonal table. Merry Christmas Everybody!

Tony Wright talks to

JAMES TW

James TW is a new singer/songwriter, tipped for big things in 2017. His YouTube videos have received millions of views and his debut single is receiving rave reviews. He caught up with Tony Wright to talk about his surprise first break and his upcoming debut album.

How are things going?

Things are going very well. I’ve just come off a long tour with Shawn Mendes and released my E.P. just before that and the reaction was lovely. So your debut single is ‘When You Love Someone’. You wrote this yourself?

I wrote this with a couple of guys actually, in America. The inspiration for the song itself came from a couple of years ago when I used to teach kids instruments to earn a bit of pocket money. There was this one boy who was eleven years old at the time and I found out that his parents were getting divorced before he knew (he didn’t know it was going to happen). I guess the first thing I thought was ‘how are they going to explain it to him in a way that he can understand and in a positive way’ and I wanted there to be a song that he could listen to that would make him feel better about what was going on.

You’re only eighteen. Your voice sounds a lot older but you’ve been doing this a long time. I love the story about when you were ten, how you ended up playing drums for your dad’s band. Is this true?

It was very true. My dad plays lead guitar in a wedding-mid-life-crisis covers band, which is cool, but when I was ten he bought a drum kit because he saw something on the news that it was good for stress – and work had not been that fun (for him). I really took to it – I really enjoyed playing the drums. Then the band had a gig and the drummer couldn’t make the show – and it was either cancel 14

or let the ten year old play. The gig went so well that I became the drummer of the wedding band for about five years.

And a couple of years later you got your first guitar?

I kind of used my dad’s guitar, he taught me a few chords, and then I used youtube to teach myself guitar and piano. When’s the album out?

I am recording a bunch of different songs in different places. You can only release your first album once, and I really want it to be at the right time – and I’m not sure when that is yet. How did you get on with the exams?

OK. One of the songs on the E.P. Is called 10K Hours and it’s about not wanting to stay at school so I can pursue music and put in all the time I want to. What are the plans for the year ahead?

Obviously I’m piecing together my new album and I’m starting to do my own headline shows, having been supporting for so long – and definitely in the next year, I’d like to release my album. There’s work to be done!

Tony Wright plays the greatest love songs of all time on When The Lights Go Down, every evening on The Breeze from 10pm. www.thebreeze.com

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company

policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Winchester area

and manager Justin Friel agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

Home Interiors

A Rustic christmas Simple festive decorations can be the most appealing, says interiors expert Katherine Sorrell Who doesn’t love a natural look? Unpretentious and understated, natural Christmas decorations suit every home, large or small, modern or traditional, and make a fabulous, timeless alternative to commercialised glitz and glitter. The ideal centrepiece is a real tree, best bought from a good local stockist. Choose one that’s as fresh as possible, make a new cut at the bottom, and display in a stand (a wicker basket is perfect) that holds a reservoir of water. (Tip: the Nordmann Fir holds its needles really well.) Decorate your tree generously without overloading, and keep to a limited colour scheme (white, red, green and brown are all great), using natural materials (see box). For a touch of sparkle, twine the tree with small, plain white fairy lights. Feeling inspired? Then make decorations with the family. Garlands of popcorn, nuts, gingerbread stars and paper strings of angels or snowflakes are adorable. Instead of shiny baubles, cut simple shapes from felt and blanket-stitch them around the outside, Intricate star, £8, or make a wreath using Jenny Walsh Design, garden clippings. Similarly, 0868 773293; www. jennywalshdesign.com you can create wonderful 22

decorations using sprigs of evergreen, ivy, pine cones (perhaps sprayed with artificial snow), rose hips, dried seed heads and twigs (lashed into a star shape). Or tie dried slices of apple and orange together with gardener’s string and add cinnamon sticks and star anise. If you’re short of time, all these will be in the shops, along with others such as birch bark candle holders, driftwood Christmas trees and needlefelted and knitted owls, reindeer and robins. Wrap presents in brown paper and string, or lengths of fabric and cotton ribbon. Use cardboard luggage labels, and why not embellish the plain paper with potato printing in white – something children might enjoy? For receiving presents, there’s nothing nicer than knitted stockings hanging by the fire, perhaps with some widely available printed hessian sacks for larger gifts. Fresh flowers are fabulous at Christmas – hyacinths, amaryllis and poinsettias are classic and all look particularly special in white. Wrap pots in hessian tied with string or pop groups of them into

a wicker basket; you can decorate the tops of the pots with silver moss. Less is more with this look, so laying the festive table is easy. A linen runner or place mats, plain white china, clear glass and simple decorations such as bowls of pine cones or oranges studded with cloves, and perhaps a vase full of evergreens,

Mould, Damp or Salt on the Walls? Almost every homeowner at some time in their lives, experiences damp problems. Mildew, efflorescence (salts on the surface of the wall) and blistering plaster, means it needs treating as soon as possible and the plaster replacing with a “breathable” alternative. BKM Mannesmann UK ltd has a simple but technologically advanced treatment system for rising and penetrative damp. The process protects inside or outside walls of all construction types and materials.

The technology is developed from extensive experience in Germany and is now available in your area. The BKM product microscopically coats all the pores in the material, creating a hydrophobic barrier in all types of brick, stone-work, masonry, cement and lime render. It can be “gravity-fed” or pressure infused into the walls, dependent upon the condition of the wall. BKM also has an external breathable wall protection application, which seals all types of render, salt impregnated brickwork. Lime based paints and render can also be protected under

the 25-year Guarantee. Christian Franceschi, Regional Director for BKM Mannesmann UK ltd, says, “Thanks to this publication, there are many people in Hampshire & Wiltshire who have recently installed our system and are extremely Christian Franceschi, Regional Director satisfied with BKM Mannesmann Uk ltd the results” FOR YOUR FREE survey, contact Christian email: c.franceschi@bkmmannesmann.com or call him on: 01962 940 005 www.bkm-mannesmann.com

Bon AppÉTIt!

By Cecile

I LOVE WINCHESTER. I do hate parking there, it’s a logistical nightmare … but once I manage to park then I love going there for a fabulous shopping experience, a casual stroll along the river, a look around the imposing Cathedral and best of all … for food and drinks! Which brings me to the best news EVER. The quaint King Alfred pub and rooms at 11 Saxon Road is being fully refurbished and is due to have reopened by the end of October! I simply cannot wait to see the changes that Jayne from the Little Pub Group has in store for her new venue. She has turned many Winchester pubs around, including the now fabulous Green Man at 53 Southgate Street, the fun Mucky Duck at 84 High Street, St James Tavern at 3 Romsey Road and Corner House on Grove Road. Expect quirky, vintage and shabby chic furnishings, a cosy atmosphere, mouth-watering menus, a cool beer selection and fab wine list, friendly staff and The Westgate superb rooms.

Learn about wine, champagne, beer, gin and whisky as well as food & wine pairings in a fun way, with likeminded people, in a relaxed atmosphere 26

The King Alfred Talking about new management, the Westgate pub with rooms at 2 Romsey Road has also been refurbished, but this time by the City Pub Company, which also owns trendy Alfie’s at 157 High Street. I was amazed at the transformation. It is now much bigger than it used to be and so beautifully decorated. I love going there for a pint, so say hi to James from me, as he will help you chose a refreshing beer amongst his great selection of real ales – from local micro-breweries including Itchen Valley, Flowerpots and Winchester-based Red Cat – to drink alongside their new winter menu. Hold on, there is more … James made me swear to secrecy, but he’s in the middle of outsourcing 15 different styles of whiskies and gins … but sssshhhh, you didn’t hear it from me, ok?!

TREAT SOMEONE TO THE ULTIMATE WINE EXPERIENCE! The perfect gift for wine lovers -

Gardening

gardening gifts It is not that long until Christmas now, and if you’ve any gardening friends it is so easy to get them a present they’ll really enjoy and find useful.

34

Make sure that you keep the plants at their best by placing them in a suitable position before you give them away.

Any good local garden centre will have plenty of potential gifts in a wide range of prices, sizes and shapes to suit anybody from the complete novice to the most experienced gardener. Alternatively, take a look on the internet and get some gorgeous gardening gifts delivered right to your door.

Outdoor plants are also an ideal choice, but make sure that you know that the plant you are choosing will go to a suitable home. There is no use buying a lime-hating plant such as a Pieris, rhododendron, Camellia or azalea for somebody if they garden on chalk - although a supply of ericaceous compost and a good sized pot could also be a present from someone else if you plan carefully.

Houseplants make brilliant presents, so why not choose a couple of really good-looking ones? At this time of year there are plenty, such as the indoor cyclamens and azaleas or a flamboyant poinsettia or a gorgeous Christmas cactus, which look fantastic whilst in flower - but don’t forget that lots of the foliage houseplants look great, too.

A lovingly created pot of winter flowering bedding plants, perhaps under-planted with a few small bulbs such as crocus or miniature daffodils, will make a lovely instant garden impact present for anyone. Despite the huge quantities of Christmas paraphernalia in garden centres now, any half decent centre will still have a good range of winter

bedding plants and winter interest plants available. Anyone with an interest in growing vegetables would enjoy one of the many gardening books on the subject, or perhaps a ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Gift Voucher Card, which lets them select the vegetables they’d like to grow from the range I offer at www.pippagreenwood.com. Then, in the spring, we send them garden-ready plants accompanied by weekly advice and tips emails from me. Most gardeners love to encourage birds into the garden, so how about a bird box or feeder or maybe even some bird food? Bird feeding equipment and supplies take up plenty of space in garden centres, so you’ll be spoilt for choice. Gardeners love practical things so a good hoe

like my favourite, the SpeedHoe, will always be welcome, or how about some Micromesh-covered or polythene-covered EasyTunnels, perfect for protecting crops throughout the growing season next year? A raised bed kit is a great gift idea, too, allowing people to grow vegetables when their own soil isn’t ideal. Some kits have the option to add crop covers made from fine mesh (to keep pests out) or polythene (to protect from the worst of the weather and provide off-season warmth). So rather than rushing out and buying something that ‘will do’ as a gift, take a moment and see what you can find which will really bring a smile to someone’s face!

By Pippa Greenwood

Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and book Pippa for a gardening talk or peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items, including Nemaslug to control slugs, popup crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, pull-out EasyTunnels, ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Gift Voucher cards, signed books and lots more besides.

GOLF GTI CLUBSPORT S WHAT IS IT? It’s the fastest front-wheel-drive car around the Nürburgring, a stripped-out hardcore celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Golf GTI and a limited edition collector’s piece all in one.

The Golf GTI Clubsport S is the result of asking engineers to do what they can to cement the GTI’s name in the hot hatch pantheon. WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET? Lifting the Golf ’s bonnet will reveal the same twolitre, turbocharged petrol you’ll find elsewhere in the Golf range – notably the Golf GTI and Golf R. In this application it’s been tuned up slightly, producing 306hp – broadly similar to the Golf R’s output but with a different exhaust system freeing up a couple of horsepower. That’s paired with the six-speed manual gearbox for weight purposes, as the extra few kilos of the dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) would work against the weight-saving nature of the Clubsport S.

WHAT’S THE SPEC LIKE? The GTI Clubsport S is a top-specification Golf and it comes with the appropriate bells and whistles. The infotainment system is Volkswagen’s Discover Navigation with a 6.5-inch colour screen - but you 42

By James Baggott

can upgrade to the Discover Pro for £1,325, which adds a larger screen and DAB radio. You’re missing one or two things – not least of which are the rear seats, replaced with a faux strut brace and cargo net. Cruise control is absent, unusually, leading to an oddly sparse suede steering wheel. WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE? It drives exactly as you’d expect the car that set the fastest front-wheel-drive lap of the Nürburgring ever to drive. It’s really very savage in a straight line, barking through the exhausts with every upshift, and scrubs off speed no less impressively. The sticky Michelin Pilot Cup tyres offer huge amounts of grip, too.

On the mixed and drying roads we used, the Clubsport S exhibited a little torque steer if you gave the car some stick, but far less than you might expect. Otherwise, it’s a very neutral car to drive on the road.

WHAT DOES THE PRESS THINK? AutoExpress reckons that the Clubsport S has ‘even more involvement and surprising refinement’, while Autocar thinks that it’s ‘by a nose, the very best fast Golf you can buy’.

WHAT DO WE THINK? It seems odd to turn a car with such broad credentials into a two-seater sports car, especially as the rear compartment trim is still present, but you can’t really ignore the way it drives. The Golf R might be a safer bet for all-weather performance, but the Clubsport S makes a great case for itself on dry roads and doesn’t feel as wrung out as other front-wheel-drive offerings of similar power outputs. Losing the rear seats makes the Clubsport S a bit of a tough sell when silhouette rivals retain the family usability and two-seat competitors are commonly less expensive, but as all of the UK’s allocation of 150 have already been sold, it’s almost a moot point. TARGET BUYERS The performance car enthusiast who loves the Golf but wants a sports car. THE RIVALS Honda Civic Type R, Porsche Cayman, Ford Focus RS KEY SELLING POINTS 1. Limited edition cachet 2. Unflappable cornering manners 3. Usable real-world performance DEAL CLINCHER It’s no harder to live with than any other Volkswagen Golf

WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL LAUNCHES NEW JUNIOR CHOIR Just nine months after the launch of its increasingly popular Children’s Church, Winchester Cathedral has started a new academic year with another initiative for engaging young people by launching a Junior Choir. Aimed at boys and girls between 7 and 14 years who live in the Diocese of Winchester and led by Keith Clark, formerly Director of the Hampshire County Youth Choir, the rehearsals are on Tuesdays during school term times from 4.45 – 7pm. The new choir’s first target will be a performance of Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat in the Cathedral in February 2017. At present no audition is required but there is an application form to fill in which, with other information, can be found at www.winchester-cathedral.org.uk. Speaking of the choir for the first time, Canon Sue

Your Local Experienced Locksmith (est 2000)

Wallace, Precentor of the Cathedral said that “The team will aim to provide enjoyable and challenging choral activities for members to develop singing and choral skills.” Sitting alongside the Cathedral’s already well established four other choirs the Junior Choir will focus on performing music as a group in their own right and, once fully established, occasionally contribute to the Cathedral’s programme of services. Canon Sue continues, “This exciting new choral opportunity is being offered to boys and girls who wish to sing in an ensemble that complements the other wonderful choral traditions of Winchester Cathedral and we very much look forward to welcoming yet more youngsters to have fun making music.”
