STEPS TO YOUR FIRST FRONT DOOR!

Could this be the year you buy your first home? Given that buying a home is the single biggest purchase most people will ever make, it’s important to get it right. If you are a first time buyer, here are ten key steps you will need to take in order to buy your first home: 1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

6.

7.

8.

Get in touch with a mortgage provider. Agree a mortgage in principle; this will tell you the price of the property you can afford to buy. Go house-shopping. Look at as many properties as you can to get a good idea of what is out there and don’t forget to explore local facilities. Will the area suit you? Make an offer. When you have found the property for you, you can make an offer, keeping in mind the amount you can borrow. Meet with your mortgage provider. Speak to your mortgage provider and finalise your application for your mortgage. Decide what you need to know about the property. The property will be valued, producing a basic report. If you want to know more about the property, you can organise for a home buyers or full building survey to be undertaken. Instruct a Solicitor. Now you will need to instruct a legal representative to undertake the conveyancing process for you. Receiving an offer. If your mortgage provider is satisfied with all the information in your application, they will make you a mortgage offer. Paying the deposit. You will need to pay the deposit to your solicitors, who will arrange the purchase.

9.

10.

Contract exchange. The contracts will now be exchanged and a completion date agreed. Completion day. Your purchase is now complete and you can collect the keys to your first home. Congratulations!

Remember, within your initial purchase, various fees may be payable, including; stamp duty, solicitors fee, valuation fees, application and booking fees. Have you considered Shared Ownership? Purchasing a Shared Ownership property means part buying, part renting your property. You’ll buy a share of the property at first, paying rent to a housing association or landlord for the rest. You will only need to pay a deposit on the part you are initially buying. You will be paying your mortgage as well as rent to the housing association or landlord. Buying this way could mean a lower initial deposit with an option to buy more shares further down the line. For more information, you can visit our Winchester branch, call us on 01962 852716 or email: winchester@newbury.co.uk

Editor’s Letter

KEEPING IT SECRET I recently had a fraudulent transaction on my bank account. I phoned the bank straight away and they were on it immediately. Two days later I received a text from them confirming the amount taken had been refunded, but it was 10 days before I was able to log back onto my online banking. I‘m sure this wasn’t my fault. But this is a reminder for me – and for you hopefully – that cyber crime is a significant threat these days. Don’t give your PIN code to anyone ever, and don’t give your password over the phone. If someone calls up and says they’ve spotted a virus on your PC, tablet or mobile phone ask yourself how somebody else can possibly be looking at these devices without your knowledge. Likewise, if you receive an email

that looks unfamiliar, just ignore it. If it’s genuine and it’s really important, the sender will find another way to get in touch. Importantly, don’t fall for scare tactics. If you have any doubts whatsoever, hang up and give yourself a bit of breathing space to listen to your gut instinct. And of course, make sure you have proper security software on your technology – the investment with a PC company to set this up for you (see Computer Services in the index) – is worth every bit as much as a good lock on your front door. These days, it’s much easier for a criminal to sit in a warm office hacking personal information, than trying to break into a property late at night, only to find there’s little of value. Except in my case, the pile of notes now under my mattress. (Not really!)

And Another Thing...

Tom and the business opportunity

by Tom Hughes

Sarah was tidying up in the lounge when she chanced upon my newly purchased motoring publication. “Ferrari Owner? Tom? Have we won the lottery?” I entered carrying cardboard box. “Not yet dear, but soon we will be rolling in it!”

a

“Tom, what are all these boxes doing in the hall? And why have you got a funny look in your eye?”

“I’m excited, that’s all. In these boxes is our future… our fortune.”

Unimpressed, Sarah ran a knife down the packing tape and opened up the carton. “Why have you got boxes of coffee and tea? Don’t tell me you’re opening a cafe because the hours are a killer and…”

“Don’t be silly. And this isn’t just any old coffee or tea, darling, this stuff is special coffee - it’s the elixir of life. It lowers cholesterol, promotes good health and generally makes you feel fantastic!” “Well that’s very nice, darling, but why have you bought so much? This lot will last us a lifetime.”

Then the full horror hit her. She plonked herself down on one of the boxes and put her head in her hands. “Tom, first it was water filters, then it was perfume, then it was vacuum cleaners, then it was those buy-to-let seminars. Do you remember them? If I hadn’t stopped you we’d be homeless 10

by now.”

My sheepish grin gave it away. Sarah strode into the kitchen and after a hefty shove managed to squeeze into the garage. “Tom, you can’t move in here.”

It was obvious that Sarah viewed my shrewd investment as just another one of my hair-brained schemes. I felt that she deserved an explanation. “Sarah darling, this is a new way of doing business. This is Multi-Level Marketing.” “So you’ve signed up for yet another pyramid scheme.”

Before I could protest there was a knock on the door. “Hi Uncle Billy, what brings you here?” asked Sarah. “Tom said there was a meeting tonight? A business opportunity? I could do with a few extra quid on top of my pension. And so could cousin Arthur.” And so, before you could say Bentley Continental, our front lounge was full to the brim with relatives, neighbours and, bizarrely, the man who had arrived to read the gas meter. Flip chart in place, there was hushed chatter as I nervously paced the 80% wool twist. Then disaster - Sarah entered with a tray full of steaming hot PG Tips. Incensed, I shooed her back into the kitchen.

“Are you insane woman? Now pour that away and open a box of my product. Then wait until the end of the presentation when they can all have a taste.” Had she never seen Dragon’s Den?

Then it was time to present my pitch to my potential distributors. Carefully, I explained that once they became one of my downline, I would earn a royalty from each bag of tea they sold. Realising from the look on Uncle Billy’s face that my future wealth was not the main motivation for him being there, I skilfully changed tack. “And of course, if you recruit your own distributors, then you get your own royalties!”

They looked around at their fellow delegates. Then they took another sip to confirm my worst fears. It was absolutely horrible. As the last of my audience departed Sarah, shaking her head, had some advice for me. “Look Tom, you don’t have to prove anything to me. I think you’re wonderful as you are.”

A voice from the back (Mr Green from number 11) piped up, “So it’s a pyramid selling scheme?”

Beaming, I went to hug her. She responded with a shove. “Listen Richard Branson, you can have a hug after you’ve emptied the garage and taken that lot to the tip!”

“Well I’m not convinced, and while you’re at it, any chance I can have my hedge clippers back?”

Loose Covers made to measure

“No, it’s a business opportunity,” I beamed.

Another hand went up. Feeling threatened, I decided to deal with the doubters head on. “Listen pal, if you’re not on board, you’re free to go.” “Sorry, can I just get into that cupboard? I need to take a gas reading.”

ROYAL CHORAL SOCIETY One hundred years after the Russian Revolution, the Royal Choral Society returns to Winchester Cathedral to perform outstanding works by Russian composers – Prokoviev’s ‘Alexander Nevsky’, a cantata based on the composer’s score for Eisenstein’s 1938 film, and ‘The Bells’, Rachmaninov’s choral masterpiece. The choir will be accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra which will open the concert with Borodin’s ‘In the Steppes of Central Asia’. The concert serves as a reminder of the incredible contribution of Russian music to the Western canon. With musicians of the highest calibre performing in the stunning surroundings of this great cathedral, it will be a truly evocative concert. Technology

mad march hair Gadgets for grooming, cutting, styling or removing, whatever your gender When it comes to looking after your hair or getting rid of unwanted hair, there’s no shortage of options - and no wonder, because the beauty market is worth huge sums of money. So it’s hardly surprising to see the likes of Dyson joining the party, albeit with a hairdryer that costs £299. The reviews are excellent, but if you’re anything like us you’re probably hoping to spend something more like £29 on a hairdryer. If that’s the case, keep an eye out for Tourmaline dryers from the usual suspects: it’s a kind of ceramic that enables hair dryers to deliver powerful airflow without leaving your hair looking like it’s been through the tumble dryer. Another great idea comes from late-night TV advertiser JML. Its £39.99 Simply Straight brush is a heated ceramic brush that promises to combine two essential items: your brush and straighteners. According to the Mirror it works really well - it’s not quite as effective as separate brushes and straighteners, but it comes awfully close and is very, very quick. One of the current trends in hair styling is steam. Stylers such as the Remington CB4N Flexibrush can be used without it, or you can pop some water in, wait 60 seconds and get fabulous, not frizzy, results. The Flexibrush was a cult classic in the 1990s, and Remington says it brought it back because it was getting 50 calls a week from people wanting to buy one.

16

There are lots of gadgets for hair removal too, from the usual epilators and shavers to more high-tech options such as IPL hair removal. IPL uses pulses of light to get rid of unwanted hair, and while it works brilliantly we’ve got bad news for anyone with ginger or light blonde hair, or very dark skin: IPL only works on darker hair colours on lighter skin tones. Prices aren’t as frightening as they used to be - for example, the £350 Philips Lumea SC2004/11 is currently on sale for a more reasonable £219 - and you can use them anywhere. Some models are even okay to use on your face. The downside is that they can take some time, so for example you should allow half an hour to do your legs. IPL is available for men too, although they aren’t recommended for use on your face or on anything more sensitive than the bikini line. Devices for men or sold as unisex devices tend to be more expensive for example, the Remington i-Light Pro is £299 and the Philips Lumea for Men is £350 - but they do work, provided you don’t have ginger or light blond hair. A big advantage for men is that unlike other hair removal methods, IPL doesn’t have stubbly regrowth, irritate your skin or lead to ingrowing hairs. There are plenty of grooming gadgets for men too. Facebook is full of ads for innovative razors and gadgets such as the £19 RazorPit Blade Sharpener. For hair removal elsewhere there’s no shortage of electric groomers, shavers and combined head and body trimmers, but shop around: recommended retail prices can be hilariously high, but retailers often sell the kits at huge discounts. That applies to women too: beauty gadgets vary wildly in price between retailers. It’s worth picking a favourite and using a comparison site such as pricespy.co.uk to make sure that looking good won’t be bad for your bank balance.

The Government White Paper includes plans to support a major increase in building affordable homes. The City Council has already secured grant towards its plans and is now talking to Government officials to secure more funding.

Early developments included small numbers of family homes. However, later this year, the Council will open two prestigious developments: Victoria Court, a city centre development of 27 flats, and Chesil Lodge, providing 52 flats of ‘extra care’ housing for older people with assessed care needs.

With over 200 Council homes delivered or under construction since its programme began three years ago, the City Council is now determined to build a

HOW TO HEDGE There is nothing better than a living boundary around or within your garden, and it is difficult to beat a hedge. Hedges can be smart or informal, neat and compact or thicker and sturdier, evergreen or deciduous and can even have pretty flowers - and now is an ideal time to plant a new hedge. First, prepare the area by forking the soil over thoroughly and remove large stones, debris and pernicious weeds. This also helps to break up any compaction and to aerate the soil, making it a better place for plant roots. You should fork in well-rotted garden compost, manure or proprietary compost if the soil is either very sandy and light or very heavy with clay, and at the same time incorporate a complete fertilizer. Don’t plant right up against an existing fence, as the plants won’t grow well. At this time of year you can create a hedge very effectively using ‘bare-root’ plants, but if you want to plant a hedge at any other time you will need container-grown plants. If using pot-grown plants, water them thoroughly and then carefully remove each plant from its pot. If the roots are tightly packed, tease them out firmly before planting. If you’re using bare-root plants, plant them immediately. It is essential to plant and space the plants correctly, to both achieve the desired effect and ensure the plants establish well. Once out of the pot, position the plant in the prepared soil at the same depth as it was in the pot; for bare-root plants only the roots should be beneath the soil. 26

Euonymus Firm the soil around each so that it is in good contact with the roots. Hedging plants should generally be spaced about 30-45cm apart. For a thicker or denser hedge, plant two parallel rows, each with a 45cm spacing between the plants, but positioned so that the planting is staggered like bricks in a wall. Once the whole hedge is planted, water the soil thoroughly to help settle the soil around the roots and so allow the plants to establish. On windy sites or with larger plants use small, temporary stakes such as bamboo canes to stabilise the plants. Keep the hedge well watered, especially during dry or windy weather. The first 18 months is the most vital period. Some great hedging plants:

• Yew - a formal, evergreen hedge. • Thuja - a stunning conifer hedge for year round colour. • Beech - a deciduous plant that gives a good effect for much of the year. Both purple and green-leafed forms. • Hornbeam - great as a neatly clipped hedge, but more prone to mildew than beech. • Cypress – excellent if kept well clipped and cut back regularly.

• Pyracantha - spiny evergreen with pretty creamy-white flowers and red-orange or yellow berries. • Privet - the classic town hedge. • Euonymus - evergreen, some variegated green and cream, others green and yellow. • Hawthorn - deciduous and potentially thorny, good for wildlife. • Blackthorn - deciduous and very thorny, with pretty white flowers followed by sloes – but can easily get too vigorous!

Saving Winchester City Mill The National Trust’s Winchester City Mill is thought to be the oldest working watermill in the country. During the heavy floods of 2014 it suffered huge damage, and later inspections revealed serious structural problems, including severe deterioration of its ancient beams and joists. The National Trust has already spent £25,000 on emergency propping to make the Mill safe for the time being. But, an additional £125,000 needs to be raised this year, so that essential repairs can be carried out.

“This Mill is still doing today what it was doing over 1,000 years ago, thanks to the tremendous support of our visitors, organisations like the National Trust’s Winchester Association, our milling and baking volunteers, and local businesses who buy our freshly ground flour,” said manager Ric Weeks.“But we urgently need to raise £125,000 to repair the building, or we may have to close the Mill for an indefinite period. “This tiny piece of our industrial heritage dates back over one thousand years and is a hugely important and much-loved part of Winchester’s historic landscape. Aside from our daily visitors – we welcome over 40,000 people a year – we also receive many school visits. The kids love all the hands-on activities where they learn how to make their own flour, and how to bake. We’re also seeing more and more otter activity on our webcams, so we’ve become a bit of a wildlife haven.”

To help raise funds in 2017 the Mill is hosting a programme of events and special moments. Highlights include a bathtub duck race along part of the famous river Test in Winchester (26 August). Visitors can choose their racing ducks from May half-term onwards, by selecting their favourite from the Mill’s ‘pond’. On 17 and 18 June a unique Millathon will take place, where the Mill’s fabulous volunteer millers will be making flour all day and all night – for 30 hours. The public are invited to drop in to support them; early bird visitors between 6am and 10am on Sunday 18 June will receive coffee and biscuits in return for their support. Throughout the year, the millers continue milling fresh stoneground flour every week for visitors and local retailers to buy, alongside the Mill’s monthly seasonal baking demonstrations.

The Mill was painted by JMW Turner in 1795 when the artist was a student at the Royal Academy. The artwork belongs to Tate Britain and a copy of the pen and ink work can be found inside the Mill. More information about the Mill’s fundraising appeal, how to donate, and its events programme can be found at www.nationaltrust.org. uk/winchestercitymill, or by calling 01962 870057.

Home Interiors

Invaluable Decorating Tips Planning changes to your home? Interiors expert Katherine Sorrell has some handy hints… Living rooms

• Use a scale plan of your room with cut out mini furniture items, and move these around until you find the right positions. • The alcoves either side of a chimney breast are perfect for creating extra storage. • For maximum light, fit a pole or track that overhangs far enough each on side of the window to allow the curtains to be drawn right back. • Avoid using a central hanging pendant as the only light source, but add in table lamps, floor lamps and wall lamps for a more flexible and flattering ambience. • Consider ways to disguise the TV when not in use – can you adapt a piece of furniture, such as an armoire, so that it sits behind closed doors when necessary?

Kitchens • Have tall cupboards at one end of your cupboard run, with the hob nearby and plenty of worktop space between the hob and the sink. Add the dishwasher on the other side of the sink. • If possible, make worktops 700mm deep instead of 600mm, to give more working space and to better accommodate a large sink. • In an open-plan kitchen, choose quiet appliances, and design so the washing up is hidden from the view of the dining table. • Paint the inside of a wall cabinet door with blackboard paint to give somewhere to write a shopping list. • Base cabinets on legs, or recessed plinths, make the room seem larger. 34

Bedrooms • Plan storage with precision, and divide the interior of your wardrobe into hanging space plus shelves, drawers and shoe racks. Consider storage gadgets such as belt racks and pull-out trays. • Maximise space by building fitted wardrobes right up to the ceiling. • Add a blackout lining to your curtains, or choose wooden shutters for additional sound and draught-proofing, and security. • Swing-arm lights on either side of the bed free up space on bedside tables. • A blanket box at the end of the bed is ideal for storing bedding and doubles as a seat. Children’s rooms • Kids’ tastes change rapidly so keep the walls, floors and major items of furniture relatively neutral and just change accessories, such as rugs, cushion covers and lamp shades, as necessary. • Cover boring walls with blackboard paint, magnetic wallpaper, peg board, maps or wall

stickers. • A high-level bed provides space beneath for study, play or storage. • Fit a dimmer switch so you can adjust the light from bright for playing or reading to soft and calm at bedtime. • Storage is all-important. Felt tips and paint brushes can be kept in tins, though beware of sharp edges. For storing tiny Lego sets and the like, ice cream tubs or shoe boxes are ideal. Bathrooms • If you’re on a budget, invest more in taps, shower doors and bath screens and save on a plain white suite, adding decorative appeal with tiles and attractive accessories. • Wall-hung WCs and washbasins create the illusion of extra space. • Hide pipework under floorboards or behind false walls and punch shallow shelves into the studwork to create useful storage niches. • Lights on both sides of your washbasin mirror dispel unflattering shadows. • Chosen a cast iron bath? Check it will fit up the stairs… By Katherine Sorrell

1. Cook the rice in a large pan of boiling, lightly salted water for about 15 minutes until tender, or follow the packet instructions. 2. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and fry the onion for 5 minutes. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in the pepper and courgette and fry for a further minute. 3. Add the chicken and cook for 3-4 minutes until no longer pink, stirring all the time. Pour in the coconut milk and simmer gently for 10 minutes until the chicken is cooked. Stir in the soy and fish sauces and lime juice. 4. Drain the rice and use a small heatproof cup or bowl to make four mounds of rice on warmed serving plates. Sprinkle the nigella seeds on top and spoon the curry on the side.

TIP Add a handful of freshly chopped coriander leaves to the curry at the end of cooking time, if liked. Or for a spicier flavour, garnish with shredded red chilli pepper.

Bon Appétit

I LOVE FOOD. PUBS. AND MY DOG, WHISKY And not always in this order. Which means that I like taking my very energetic 2-year-old cavapoo for walks all around the beaten tracks of Hampshire. That’s a treat for him. And then I like stopping on my way home via a pub for a drink – or two. That’s a treat for me. There is even one pub I know that is sooooo crazy about our four-legged friends that they call themselves “the most dog friendly pub in the forest”. And oh my, Whisky would agree. The Compass Inn in Winsor is a true haven for dogs, where they get doggy meals and treats from the chef. They run monthly dog walks too! Whisky’s other favourite pub is the Rockstone on Onslow Road in Southampton city centre. There might not be a great walk around that particular area for dogs, but it’s worth going there anyway for a fabulous treat to your palate. Selfish, I know. But when a pub offers

Learn about wine, champagne, beer, gin and whisky as well as food & wine pairings in a fun way, with likeminded people, in a relaxed atmosphere

me 52 rums, 37 gins, 20 whiskies, too many beers and ciders to count as well as the best and biggest burgers in town, I tend to listen to the call and spend a lot of time there with my dog. But do book, as the place gets fully packed. It’s THAT good. Watch out for their first Gin Festival on March 31-April 1, following the immense success of their annual Rum Festival. Do try it, with or without dogs, the place is amazing! When in Southampton, I also tend to go to Highfield for a walk in the woods. When Whisky’s little legs get tired (or when I huff and puff, whichever comes first), we head for the fabulous Brewhouse and Kitchen on Highfield Lane. Whilst Whisky gets a truly lovely welcome and a lick from Head Brewer Matt (or is it the other way round), I crawl to the bar (I have little legs too) and order a pint of their own on-site brewed real ale. They offer a fantastic selection of craft beers and truly lovely food in a super trendy environment. For more reviews on dogfriendly pubs in the UK in general, and Hampshire in particular, do check my favourite website: www.doggiepubs.org.uk

Hockley Meadows Farm Appeal Supporters of the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust have raised £153,000 towards the purchase of Hockley Meadows Farm in Twyford.

The Wildlife Trust plans to use the land to recreate the traditional wildlife-friendly farming methods that have shaped the Itchen Valley’s water meadows. As well as running a working wildlifefriendly farm, they’ll manage the surrounding floodplain meadows as a vital habitat for fantastic species like water vole, otter and the rare southern damselfly. • The 31 acre farm has been put up for sale by the farmer, as he is retiring. To ensure that the land is protected from future development or intensive farming, he has kindly offered to sell

the farm to the Wildlife Trust at market value of £400,000. • A generous gift in a Will from a Winchesterbased support met half the purchase price, with an additional £153,000 being donated to the Wildlife Trust in response to its appeal for help. • The farm’s central location makes it a key piece in the jigsaw of wildlife-friendly sites the Wildlife Trust manages in the Itchen Valley. • The artist’s impression is by local painter Dan Powell, and shows the kinds of wildlife that will benefit from our plans for the farm’s water meadows. To support the appeal and for more information visit www.hiwwt.org.uk/hockley-appeal.

NEW AUDI Q5 Replacing ultra-successful cars is never easy for a manufacturer, but that’s the challenge Audi has faced with the Q5, the brand’s best-selling SUV. Built at the manufacturer’s most advanced ‘smart factory’ in Mexico, the refreshed offroader is packed with clever technology, features revised engines and a fresh look that the maker hopes will continue to win over buyers. But has it done enough? Looks and image

The new Q5 may be a little less flashy than its Jaguar F-Pace rival, but that smart new octagonal nose, dramatic headlights and sharp body creases give it fantastic presence on the road. That’s helped by a wonderfully squat stance and perfect proportions. Inside the quality is clear. Solid, good quality materials are everywhere and the leather seats are comfortable and perfectly adjustable. There is plenty of space around the driver and logically placed controls for the multimedia system. 44

There’s also a three-zone climate control system, an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system, and the optional virtual cockpit, which replaces the dials with a 12.3-inch high resolution display.

Space and practicality

The new Q5 is bigger and wider than its predecessor – but still 90kg lighter. Inside there’s more headroom and rear knee-room, while boot space is up 10 litres. Two adults will sit comfortably in the back, but a large transmission tunnel seriously eats into rear legroom in the middle seat.

Safety systems are plentiful and buyers can opt for active lane assist, pre-sense assistance which helps detect if a crash is imminent and can apply the brakes for you, and cross-traffic assistance at the rear that will help when pulling out of parking spaces. In slow moving traffic it’s even partly autonomous, slowing down and speeding up in jams while keeping you in your lane.

What’s under the bonnet?

There are three engine options to pick from – but the best seller, and our pick of the bunch, is the 187bhp, 400Nm, 2.0-litre TDI, which will account

for 60 per cent of sales in the UK. This comes as standard with a clever new Quattro Ultra all-wheel drive system that can switch seamlessly between two and four-wheel drive automatically. Fuel economy is 56.5mpg with emissions of 132g/km, and it hits 60mph in 7.7 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 135mph. A 2.0-litre TFSI petrol option with 250bhp is also available. It’s capable of returning 40.9mpg and emits 157g/km. A feisty 3.0-litre V6 TDi completes the line-up, producing 284bhp and a stonking 620Nm of torque.

Behind the wheel

The new Q5 is quite simply brilliant to drive. We tested the car on a variety of terrain, from motorways to cities and beaches to dirt tracks; it took them all in its stride. On the road it’s quiet, refined and accomplished, while in the grit it was surefooted and secure.

The revised 2.0-litre diesel engine is punchy and works brilliantly when combined with the 7-speed S-tronic gearbox - overall it’s by far and away the best choice of transmission.

Verdict

Audi has moved the game on with its new Q5 but not ruined a recipe that has won it so many admirers. Stylish, comfortable and great to drive, it’s now packed with even more clever technology and features. With best in class performance and economy, and some highly tempting optional extras, we’d be very surprised if any of its rivals managed to usurp it at the top of the sales charts any time soon.
