something to tell us? The Discover team has a monthly get-together to exchange ideas about what we are going to put into each of our magazines. Advertising will always be in of course – your support of the businesses is what pays for everything else. We’ve always included a what’s on and anything else we think of that’s interesting. It’s the one thing that searching on the internet isn’t very good for. Suppose you’re thinking ‘weather’s nice tomorrow, what shall we do’. You can search for it, but it’ll be site after site, page after page – there’s no one place that collates it all. So as it’s nearly summer and there are hundreds of activities and event available, we are proverbially making hay, and have decided to include even more than usual in the next

couple of issues. In this edition we’ve put together a feature on festivals. We’ve kept it to five pages, although if we were to list every one taking place this year there would be no room for anything else in the magazine! It’s the small local events that are difficult for us to find though. So if you know of anything happening near where you live – a country fair, a village market, a local play type of thing – send in the details to editorial@ discovermagazines.co.uk. That’ll make the magazine interesting and useful for the recipients and – let’s be honest – make my life just a little bit easier! Thank you.

Home Interiors

a home with character There’s more to interior style than eye-catching accessories. Consider introducing an appealing sense of charm and character with these interesting ideas. Is your home lacking in an indefinable something? Has it lost its period features? Would it benefit from some appealing detailing, the restoration of authenticity or some aids to functionality? Sometimes it is worth considering some more architectural alterations, which don’t necessarily have to cost a fortune. Here are a few suggestions. Improve your floors If you have original timber boards in good condition beneath your floor coverings, then sanding them back, staining and/or oiling them is a relatively straightforward procedure for a competent DIYer; alternatively, employ a professional. Boards in poor condition can be renovated to an extent, or consider replacing them with reclaimed boards that match the style of your home. Homes built between the late 19th century and the middle of the 20th often feature colourful, patterned geometric or encaustic tiles,

Image Left Harrogate Victorian pattern floor tiles in traditional red, black and white, ÂŁ96.32, Original Style: 01392 473000; www.originalstyle.com. 12

generally along the hallway and garden path. Even if they are discoloured or damaged they should be repairable, and with the right specialist the results will be dramatic. Think about mouldings From skirting to ceiling roses, door surrounds to dados, mouldings contribute enormously to the overall look of a home. Research carefully, to ensure they correspond in scale and design to the age and style of your architecture. Modern replicas are often available, but sometimes going to a specialist is necessary and this is not cheap. Ease of alteration depends on your circumstances but this is definitely a project to bear in mind when considering renovation work. What about woodwork? In living rooms lacking storage, build across the recesses either side of the fireplace, with cupboards below and display shelving above. The same goes for alcove shelving elsewhere, window seats, wardrobes and other forms of built-in joinery. Consider these additions carefully, so that

they complement your home in terms of scale and detailing. And, plan to remove and replace completely inappropriate built-in storage or seating when possible.

Replacing poor quality or badly designed interior doors with beautiful ones is a major enhancement. In a period home you might seek out reclaimed examples or find well-made reproductions; also, decide whether to paint them or, conversely, strip them. Panelling can enhance a room or hallway and

comes in a wide variety of styles, from Jacobean to contemporary, and is relatively easy to fit. Get the lighting right You can improve inadequate or imbalanced built in lighting or out of character fittings: either discreetly with minimal downlighters in the ceiling, simple wall lights or versatile LED strips - or go for full-on drama with huge, eye-catching chandeliers. All in the details Small details like cupboard knobs, door and window furniture, light switches, plug sockets and even the humble pull cord can all make a difference. Cheap plastic light switches can be swapped for upmarket ones which are lovely to look at and pleasant to touch. The same goes for door and window furniture: think, for example, how different your front door would look with a gorgeous, matching set of letterbox, bell and numbers.

BEE CREATIVE IN THE GARDEN The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and The Wildlife Trust have joined forces to urge gardeners to do more to help protect bumblebees and solitary bees, heroes of the pollinator world. The Bee Creative in the Garden! call comes as bees are under increasing pressure largely due to loss of habitat. In the countryside, 97% of lowland meadow has already been lost and the dramatic decrease in suitable habitats isn’t just confined to rural areas.

The network of 15 million gardens that once formed ‘green corridors’ for wildlife are disappearing at an alarming rate. The number of front gardens that have been paved over has tripled in a decade and over five million have no plants growing at all. Gardeners can download a wild bee-friendly gardening guide. Wildlife events and a ‘Bee 14

Creative’ photo competition will also be taking place from 1 April to 1 November 2017.

Helen Bostock from the RHS said: “A healthy garden is buzzing with bees and other pollinators. By providing nesting sites and growing nectar and pollen rich flowers gardeners can and do support a wide variety of bumblebee and solitary bees.”

Ellie Brodie from The Wildlife Trusts, says: “Anyone can take action to help wild bees whether you have a wall for vertical planting, window box, or back garden. It’s easy to plant a bee haven.” The wild bee-friendly gardening guide, ‘Get your garden buzzing for bees’, is free to download at wildaboutgardensweek.org.uk.

BMW M760Li xDrive By James Baggott Those of you hoping this was BMW’s M7 need to look away now. Although this may be the fastest BMW ever made, if you’re after a fire-breathing, full-blooded M car, the M760Li will leave you a little disappointed. BMW says that’s because this is a car for buyers with something of a split personality. One moment they may be keen on a country road assault so they can enjoy the glorious V12, the next they might want to kick back and relax in the massaging seats and just cruise along. Looks and image

The 7 Series has long been a luxury choice for the type of buyer who still enjoys driving, though – and the M760Li is the epitome of that. With several driving modes to choose from, sporty drivers are well catered for when its sport setting is active. With the comfort setting it’s mellower, more relaxed, it eases over bumps and floats along beautifully. The looks of the M760Li won’t be for everyone but inside is a wonderful place to spend time. For those who are chauffeured the back seats are arguably more comfortable than up front. There are multimedia screens to enjoy, cushioned headrests and massaging, reclining seat backs.

Space and practicality

The 7 Series does feel a little smaller in the rear than rivals from Mercedes and Audi, though. Up front the driving position is a little cosseting too, but it’s easy to get comfortable.

What’s under the bonnet?

BMW made a lot of noise about it being 30 years since they installed a V12 engine in their 7 Series at the launch. Since then, the 12-cylinder lump has doubled in power: the 2017 6.6-litre unit boasts a whopping 601bhp, a staggering 800Nm 16

of torque and is capable of propelling it to 60mph in just 3.6 seconds. That gives it the impressive title of the fastest accelerating BMW ever made, but you’ll pay at the pumps; the M760Li will return 22.1mpg and emits 294g/km.

Behind the wheel

The BMW is a true Jekyll and Hyde car with distinct personalities behind the wheel. On the track it was incredibly swift and that V12 makes a pleasingly sound and, while there may be some body roll, it’s not too intrusive. It’s all helped by four-wheel drive that has a rear wheel drive bias when needed. The steering is a little light in the comfort setting, though, but flick it into sport and it’s far better.

Value for money

For £132,310, you do get some goodies thrown in. Lightweight 20-inch alloys, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system and Car Play are included, as is an Advanced Parking System, adaptive LED headlights, a head-up display, and massaging seats. There’s even rear-seat entertainment and a panoramic glass sunroof provided too. There’s also an extensive options list, including night vision and BMW laser headlights.

Verdict

The fact BMW perseveres with a V12 is a revelation. With downsizing the current buzzword, it seems hard to believe that a manufacturer would launch a 6.6-litre petrol drinking lump. Although the market for it will be small, we’re still very glad it has. OK, so this might not be the M7 that many performance BMW fans crave, but it’s as close to it as we’re going to get. It’s great fun to drive, sumptuously luxurious and wonderfully relaxing when you want it to be - and all in, a very competent and exciting 7 Series indeed.

City Council buys Winchester bus station Winchester City Council has agreed to buy the freehold of the bus station site in central Winchester from bus operator Stagecoach. The City Council intends to make improvements to the site in the short-term by improving the poor quality of the current bus interchange and to propose changes that will improve the flow of buses through the town and increase pedestrian safety. In the longer-term, the purchase will bring new opportunities and have significant benefits for the regeneration of central Winchester and the continuing provision of bus services. The decision brings to a conclusion more than 20 years of negotiations over the site which started in the 1990s when Stagecoach first indicated a desire to vacate the bus station. 18

HORRIS HILL SCHOOL Horris Hill School has a unique ethos which provides a rigorous and extensive academic, sporting, musical and artistic foundation. Success is delivered by achieving places and awards at the very best senior schools and by developing boys with impeccable manners, good humour and active brains! In the past academic year, awards to senior schools have included: Outstanding Talent at Harrow, Academic at Winchester, Eton and Radley, Music at St Edward’s Oxford, Sport at Millfield. The majority of 13+ leavers go onto Eton and Winchester, as well as Radley, Sherborne, Marlborough, St Edwards, Millfield amongst others. Recent 2017 successes have included the U13A rugby team winning the IAPS National Small Schools Sevens tournament (a brilliant win against some excellent opponents), the awards to senior schools that the top year have so far earned for Academic, Sport, Music, Drama and Outstanding Talent and the school placing fifth in the National Satips General Knowledge competition; The Senior Chess Team also won the Regional round of the U19 National Schools Chess Championship regional round against Radley College - a fantastic win against much older opponents. The school and its staff believe that the period from 7 - 13 years of age are the most critical in any boys' life. These are the years where the foundations of the men they can become are laid. At such a crucial stage in their cultural development, they believe that an all-boys’ school provides the optimal setting where pupils will exercise their intellectual inquisitiveness, free to explore all avenues, building self-confidence and awareness in a safe and encouraging environment. Plus those youngsters have 90 acres of grounds for sport, activities, den building, bushcraft and for letting off steam! A wide variety of sports and 20

extra-curricular activities is offered, so that every boy has the opportunity to develop interests away from the classroom. The main sports are rugby, football, cricket, hockey and tennis. The school also has its own golf course, train and modelling room, squash court and cross country course. For boys with green fingers, they have their very own kitchen garden, where they also have chickens and pigs! Horris Hill also offer Lamda for budding performers, judo, Mandarin, shooting, climbing and a hugely successful chess club. The relatively small size of the school allows every boy to play a full part in school life, through which he will learn how he can make a difference to his surroundings. Horris Hill promote personal qualities that allows the pupils to get the best from each other and their surroundings and they actively encourage the boys to take responsibility for themselves and each other. It is easy to forget that such a supportive, kind and confident culture is now something of a rarity. There is no doubting that the school has been busy, striving to achieve as much as possible, but each challenge has been met with enthusiasm and Horris Hill boys continue to be gracious no matter what the result.

Email registrar@horrishill.com to arrange an appointment. A School Bus Service is offered for local day boys from Stockbridge/Winchester area to Horris Hill from September.

HURSLEY VILLAGE, WINCHESTER, HAMPSHIRE

New Inheritance Tax Break: Will You Qualify? Many of you will have seen news about the new inheritance tax changes introduced in April 2017. Billed by the conservatives as a £1,000,000 allowance the new changes are not as simple as that. Since 6th April you now receive an additional £100,000 inheritance tax allowance on your death but this will only be applicable if you leave that amount of value relating to your house to your direct descendants. If your spouse/civil partner dies before you and does not use their allowance then you can use it in addition to yours. The good news is that direct descendants includes step children and adopted children. If you have no children though, you are going to lose out.

Some people might include a niece or nephew as well as their child as a beneficiary. Leaving your estate so your niece and daughter receive half each means you could lose part of the allowance. A simple re-write of your will leaving your house to your daughter and your investments to your niece could be enough to stop you losing the allowance. Trusts in wills are not automatically problematic nor is gifting your house into trust during your lifetime but it is important to review any such arrangements to ensure that you will not inadvertently pay more inheritance tax.

The new allowance is “the biggest change to inheritance tax laws since 2007

Trusts are particularly useful if, between you and your spouse/civil partner, your estates are worth more than £2,000,000. If you die with an estate worth more than £2,000,000 the allowance will start to disappear. Leaving the estate of the first spouse/civil partner to die into trust (so the surviving spouse/civil partner can benefit) or directly to descendants could be an effective way of preserving the allowance. The new allowance comes with other caveats too. Many people prefer to leave their house in trust till their grandchild is 25 rather than allowing their grandchild to inherit aged 5. This could mean that the allowance is lost but you have to weigh up what is more important: paying less tax or avoiding assets passing to a beneficiary too young. The new allowance is the biggest change to inheritance tax laws since 2007 and it is therefore vital for you to review your arrangements to ensure they are as tax efficient as possible. A member of the expert private client team at Trethowans Solicitors would be pleased to help you. To arrange an initial discussion at our Winchester or Hedge End offices, please telephone 02380 321 000 or visit www.trethowans.com. Home visits are also available.

IS SHARED OWNERSHIP THE KEY TO BUYING YOUR OWN HOME?

In last year’s Autumn Statement the Government pledged to inject £1.4billion into affordable housing plus £2.3billion for more homes in ‘areas of high demand’.

You will need to have enough savings to cover the minimum 5-10% of the equity share you are buying, as a deposit. In addition, you will need at least £2,500 to cover the costs of buying a home.

The investment is to be shared between three current schemes. One of these schemes, Shared Ownership, has been helping people into home ownership for the last 30 years, but what is it?

You must have a gross household income of no more than £80,000 per annum or £90,000 per annum in Greater London, and must not already own a home. Last but not least, you must be able to demonstrate a good credit history and you must not be in rent arrears, as well as ensuring you can afford regular payments and the costs involved in buying a home.

Shared Ownership provides access to homeownership that would otherwise be unaffordable. The scheme is a cross between buying and renting and allows the purchaser to buy a share in a property between 25% - 75% of the purchase price, and then pay rent on the remaining share. The purchaser will often require a smaller mortgage for the share they are purchasing. There is an option to buy further shares in the property at any point in the future. This process is known as staircasing and provides the opportunity for future outright ownership. What are the benefits? Your deposit can be as little as 5% of the share, not the whole property value. Depending on the Housing Association’s criteria, you can start with purchasing as little as a 25% share of the purchase price, gradually increasing your share in the property when you can afford to and eventually own the property outright.

Myth Busting • • • •

It’s not just for first time buyers Shared Ownership properties are often sited in new private developments Shared Ownership refers to how the property is owned, not lived in You don’t need permission to decorate your home.

How do I get a Shared Ownership mortgage? Newbury Building Society has been providing mortgages and savings products for over 160 years. We’re one of the oldest surviving building societies in the UK and one of the few lenders who provide products up to 95%, even on Shared Ownership. To find out more about Help to Buy Shared Ownership schemes visit our Winchester branch, call us on 01962 852716 or email winchester@newbury.co.uk

The rent paid on the remaining share is often much less than the rental rates charged on the open market. Am I eligible? You are eligible if you are at least 18 years old but it’s worth noting that some mortgage lenders will require the minimum age to be 21 years old.

Short Story

lost and found

By Jackie Brewster

“A gentleman’s come in with a lost and found card for the window.” Carly was new to the job at the village newsagent, and felt as though she was constantly interrupting poor Frances with questions. “What should I say to him?” “Is he wearing a flat cap covered in badges?” Frances looked up from a pile of invoices. “Yes,” Carly said. “It keeps slipping over his eyes.” “That’s Mr Pemrose.” Frances took off her glasses and pushed back her chair. “I’ll be right there.” The gentleman in question was stood at the counter holding a crisp white postcard. He smiled at the sight of Frances. “I’m intrigued to hear what you’ve found this week, Mr Pemrose,” she said warmly. “I’m glad you asked,” he winked. “I found a cloud of starlings over Kirk’s Farm that looked, for a moment, like the ribbon on a birthday present.” “How wonderful,” Frances said taking the card from him. “Carly would you mind putting this in the window so that passers-by can see it?” Greatly puzzled, Carly took the neatly written card, and squeezed herself between the crisp boxes and the window to reach the lost and found display. “I’m afraid there are no spaces left. Are there any old cards that could be taken down?” “I’m sure there’s a few,” Frances said. “What do you think Mr Pemrose, shall we make some space?” “Oh yes.” The man chuckled as the hat again slipped over his eyes. “Maybe the one about the full moon that rolled up Copper Hill can go?” “Perhaps,” Frances said, “but has that snowy field you found that looked like candyfloss now been returned to its rightful owner?” “I’m sure someone must have claimed it by now,” Mr Pemrose said, turning cheerfully to Carly. “Can you 30

find it, dear?” Carly pulled each card out of its slot and read the descriptions. There were lost cats and bus passes, found cats and bus passes, and every now and then she recognised Mr Pemrose’s neat handwriting. These found things were strange. He’d found a cherry tree in full bloom in February, a double rainbow over the moor and the song of a thrush at midnight. Who could possibly have lost these things she wondered. Finally, she found a fading card about a field of candyfloss. “Would you like the old card back?” she asked, slipping the new card into the vacant slot. “You keep it,” he said, adjusting his hat while opening the door. With a ring of its bell he left. Carly dusted down her jeans. “Well I don’t know what he’s found,” she said, “but I strongly suspect he’s lost his marbles.” “Mr Pemrose is perfectly sane,” Frances laughed. “But why does he do it?” Carly asked. “No one has lost a flock of starlings, because they don’t belong to anyone, so how can he say that he’s found one?” “Because a year ago Mr Pemrose saw a card posted in our window which said ‘LOST – MY SENSE OF WONDER’,” Frances said. “Ever since then he’s been trying to reunite them with it.” “Weren’t you concerned for the person who posted it?” Carly worried. “Oh, no,” Frances laughed, “the card didn’t originally say that; condensation had made the ink run.” “So what did it really say?” Carly asked. “I can’t remember,” Frances frowned. “A lost umbrella maybe; nothing to lose any sleep over.” “Does Mr Pemrose know?” Carly asked. “If he does it hasn’t stopped him,” Frances smiled. “Besides, everyone likes to read his cards. We all mislay our sense of wonder occasionally.”

The UK Festival Scene

(For everyone who thinks they are a bit old for that sort of thing…)

By Tania Houston The music scene is a vibrant and important part of UK culture, and the summer festival season is the exciting showcase for the best of our new and established artists. If you’ve never been to a festival however, you might think that what you’ve seen of Glastonbury epitomises the reason you don’t go: lots of mud and a huge drunk crowd of mostly twenty-somethings. Let me enlighten you! I am – shall we say - a ‘more mature’ music fan and I promise you that there is something on offer for almost every age, music taste and budget. There are festivals for party animals and for families; for teens and baby boomers; for day trippers and weekenders; in other words, for anyone that likes the idea of having fun with a bit of music involved. These pages give you some help with where to start and a more information about some of the ones I know a bit about.

How do I choose?

The Who at the Isle of Wight Festival, © Dylan Roberts

There are several things to consider when planning your summer festival diary. Most of the events could be said to be suitable for anyone. Very few don’t accept children. But try to find out who the organisers are really targeting and match yourself with those. 1 You have a tight budget. Aim for the one-day only gigs, and make the most of anything free or very low cost and local. Look at: Beggars Fair, Alresford Festival 2 You have young children. Does the website say children are ‘accepted’ or ‘welcomed’ – there’s a world of difference. Look at: Camp Bestival, Victorious

3 You have tweenagers/ teenagers. They need keeping an eye on, but they want to spend the time with their friends, not you. Day events are ideal for this as it gives them a bit of freedom, but stops it getting out of hand. Look at: Common People, Victorious. 4 You are over 40, child-free and want Radio 2/Breeze FM type music. The retro festivals are best for you. Look at: Wickham Festival, Let’s Rock and some of the artists at the Isle of Wight Festival.

5 You are an adult with no ties and really into music and/ or fun and dancing. Aim for something meant for grownups and chart watchers. Look at: Common People, Reading Festival. 6 You are an adult with no ties and want a full entertainment program e.g. talks and activity. Plenty on offer and we’d recommend Blissfields (local), Cornbury and Secret Garden Party.

A weekend Away On your doorstep is great, but it doesn’t feel like a holiday if you can nip back home at a moment’s notice. What’s needed is bit of distance (but not too much) and definitely a complete change of scene. From June to August, these ones will cram as much into three days as a fortnight in Magaluf. Secret Garden Party 20-23 July, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire

Credit: Louise Roberts Wildfire Adventure Camp 16-17-18 June somewhere in Kent Wildfire is the place to go to bring out your inner Bear Grylls. Billed as Half Adventure Camp, Half Music Festival, this is two days/ three nights of activities and music. There is some extreme stuff in there – Zorbing, obstacle course, sword skills – but also wood whittling, macramé, and fire lighting amongst the 80 activities on offer. It’s adults only, so you really won’t be running around unless you want to and – bliss mobile phones are discouraged. Winner of Best New Festival and Best Small Festival, it’ll be a memory making weekend. www.campwildfire.co.uk

34

Whilst this is very much a music festival, it is equally a huge weekend outdoor party. Some really exciting musicians, side shows, talks, fancy dress, fireworks and more, you will have just the best time ever. It has been announced this will be the last time it runs having been around for 13 years so I guess all good things…, but ‘SGP’ fans are determined to make a truly memorable sendoff. This is a great example of a ‘don’t think you are too old’ type of event. Yes, there will be more under 40s than over, but the relaxed environment means that anyone, young/old, slim/fat, straight/gay, normal or a bit quirky is equally welcome. For a break from the big, bad world, it’s just 3 hours’ journey to pure Credit: Max Miechowski hedonism. www.secretgardenparty.com

Wilderness Festival 3-6 August, Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire Into August and school holidays, so a festival that truly offers something for everyone. Not every family is universally into the same music, or indeed into music at all. Wilderness offers a grand buffet of activities, where even the hardest to please will admit they had fun. Music – Grace Jones and Two Door Cinema Club for starters. Talks, poetry, debate, theatre, games, workshops, outdoor activity, wellbeing and dining experiences. Topped off with plenty of entertainment for children (because if they aren’t enjoying it, neither are you). www.wildernessfestival.com

on the doorstep So maybe you like the idea, but just don’t want to commit yourself to spending a lot of time at one or blowing the budget just trying the idea out. Victorious 25-27 Aug, Southsea

Let’s Rock 8-9 July, Southampton

Alresford Festival 8 July, Alresford

A retro festival, so if you are of the right age, you will have grown up with these acts. There’s just one stage at the front, but the day is as much about the socialising as it is about the music. Because everyone knows the lyrics, people singing and dancing at their ‘base’ is the norm, and that base is picnic blankets, chairs, picnics and plenty to drink. Headliners include Tony Hadley (ex Spandau Ballet).

Family friendly, several stages and – because it’s for charity – bargain tickets. You won’t know most of the bands, but that doesn’t mean there’s a lack of talent. Several stages, bouncy castles and camping on the Saturday night if you want it, or the option of a bus to and from Winchester station.

Victorious is unique in its truly universal appeal. It has a dedicated entertainment area for children, Rita Ora and Olly Murs for the teens and Madness and Stereophonics for the ‘non-teens’. Being a flat site it’s good for parents with buggies and elderly or disabled. And with bargain price day tickets (adults £30, age 5-15 £8) and a good train service to Southsea, well what’s not to like? victoriousfestival.co.uk

Two big ones There are two big all weekenders in this area which need a budget and some stamina to attend. Blissfields 6-8 July, Winchester

Boomtown 10-13 August, Winchester

Several of the Discover team went to this one last year and loved it. Blissfields has become a little gem on the festival circuit and whilst it’s never going to be a Reading, Glastonbury or Isle of Wight sized event, it has pulled loads of established names in the past such as Bastille and Mumford and Sons. An illicit journey to the Hidden Hedge at night – a party in its own right - is a must to sample the bohemian delights of fire dancers, acrobats and trapeze artists. A wonderful festival experience on a smaller scale. blissfields,co.uk

Talking of stamina, Boomtown is built around Winchester’s Matterley Bowl so bear in mind there’s a very steep hill to negotiate several times a day. This one certainly has plenty of music, but that’s not really what it’s about. Rather it’s ‘theatre’ with amazing temporary cities across the site including The Wild West, Trenchtown and China Town. The days are fairly quiet but at night Boomtown comes alive. boomtown.co.uk.

bigger festivals If what interests you is the big name chart artists - either have been, are or will be - then these are the ones to go to all within around an hour’s drive. Many will have camping, including motorhomes, and late night entertainment too. Typically these events are better for adults, but Camp Bestival is a definite exception, being very family focused.

WILDLIFE TRUST BEGINS WORK The first Wildlife Trust cows and sheep are making themselves at home at Hockley Meadows Farm, after the local charity successfully completed on the purchase of the Twyford land.

A fundraising appeal to help meet the purchase price exceeded its target, with days to go before the deadline. Now on site, Trust is using the land to support the traditional wildlife-friendly farming methods that have shaped the Itchen Valley’s water meadows. Key to this is the use of traditional breeds of cattle to lightly graze the land - a widely-used land management practice for maintaining water meadow habitats and ensuring the greatest diversity of plants and other wildlife.

As well as running a working wildlife-friendly farm, the Wildlife Trust will also manage the surrounding floodplain meadows as a vital wildlife

British White cattle grazing at St Catherine's Hill habitat. This includes the northern-most meadow at the farm, which is designated as part of the Itchen Valley SSSI for its wildlife value.

Debbie Tann, Chief Executive at Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust said: “Being able to move onto the site is a momentous occasion for us and I would just like to again thank the 1600 people whose kind donations made this happen. Some of our British White cattle will be making the meadows their home this week, and later in the spring we will be using the farm for lambing.” www.hiwwt.org.uk.

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company

policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Winchester area

and manager Justin Friel agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

I LOVE GIN. And apparently, I’m not the only one... Fetch the ice and tonic – the gin industry in the UK is indeed booming, with 49 distilleries opening in 2016 alone, and £400 million spent on buying gin bottles. The trend for small batch gin is still on the increase this year with new gin lists popping up in restaurants, pubs and bars all over the county, Winchester leading the way of course! But do you know which gin you actually prefer? And why? The Hampshire Wine School offers an education, in a fun and relaxed way at the Winchester Wessex Hotel, on how gin is created, and how to make THE perfect Gin & Tonic by comparing 5 styles of gin, 3 premium tonics and 5 types of botanicals. A real mouth-watering and eyeopening experience for £32.50pp. Do not miss out on Winchester’s forthcoming House of Gin Festival either, which is returning to Winchester GuildHall on Saturday 27th May, 5pm-10pm, in association with Winchester Distillery and East Imperial tonic and mixers. The Festival will have three Gin bars showcasing a wide selection of small batch and Award Winning Gins. Producers shall also run masterclasses on how their gin is distilled, offer tastings and an opportunity to purchase bottles at a discounted rate. Copperhead Gin, Nordes gin, Marylebone Gin, Liverpool Gin,

Learn about wine, champagne, beer, gin and whisky as well as food & wine pairings in a fun way, with likeminded people, in a relaxed atmosphere 42

Nginiuos Gin, Brennen & Brown Gin, 6 o’clock Gin, Burleighs Gin and Elephant Gin to name a few will be presented on the day. Tickets on sale for £8.03 at EventBrite.co.uk. My favourite gin of the moment is Pinkster Gin, as it makes a refreshingly different G&T, with a delicate raspberry flavour appealing both to seasoned gin drinkers and recent converts. It even won ‘Overall Best Contemporary Gin’ at The Gin Guide Awards 2017! So, how about this wonderful ‘Je T’Aime’ pink cocktail for the one you love. … • 37.5ml Pinkster Gin

• 15ml Chambord liqueur (or raspberry equivalent) • 50ml Pineapple juice

Shake hard to create the foam layer and double strain in Martini glass. Float raspberries on top. Enjoy!

Gardening

outdoor relaxation When you get back from a hard day’s work, or when you simply find the time to escape into the garden after a stressful day, then it is essential that you are met by a soothing environment. So, concentrate on a truly relaxing feel that will help you to unwind as you enjoy soft shades and textures of foliage, delicate flower colours and fabulous perfumes. Plants have an amazing ability to calm and soothe even the most wound up, stressed out mood, but what should you grow if you really want to create that perfect place to relax?

Start by considering a fairly gentle perfume, like that produced by many roses. One of my favourites is ‘Felicia’. For something slightly richer try ‘Tuscany Superb’. If you have an arch, arbour, pergola or even a spare bit of fence then train a honeysuckle over it. Its delicately coloured flowers and fabulous perfume

will cheer you up and you can even enjoy it in the early evening.

A sowing of night-scented stock will produce plants that are perfect for early evening relaxation, as this is when the flowers open and produce wafts of really sweet scent. If you have space for a good-sized container plant, then grow your own Datura or Brugmansia. Commonly known as the angel’s trumpet, these plants produce large elegant trumpet-shaped flowers with a wonderful perfume. Think too of plants with a relaxing feel to them, such as the grass Chasmanthium latifolium which grows to a height of about 45 cm and carries its flattened seed heads above the leaves. They move about delicately in the breeze and are almost impossible not to stroke.

Artemisia abrotanum has soft grey-green leaves that will make you want to touch it, which releases a lovely aroma. The perfume of lavender is often used in

aromatherapy because of its calming, soothing properties, so grow this in a sunny spot with freedraining soil, perhaps to edge a border. It not only has lovely, slightly furry or felt-like foliage but also produces that heavenly smell. Grasses and bamboos work well too; the rustling sound of bamboo foliage as the stems sway gently is one of the most relaxing sounds I know, and for smaller spaces many of the grasses form wonderfully rounded and quite irresistible clumps of foliage. When it comes to choosing flowers, if you want to relax then concentrate on cream, white and, of course, the pastel shades. Green is known to be a relaxing colour too, so include plenty of plants with good foliage, and, in shady areas, a miniature grotto-like patch planted up with ferns is wonderful.

And finally, before you rush off to the garden centre to buy some of these truly magical ingredients, just a reminder that water in a garden always helps to relax you. Whether it’s a small pond or perhaps a bubble fountain, position it

RHUBARB and Almond tart

Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes plus chilling time

A delicious tart with a layer of tangy roasted rhubarb topped with a sweet almond frangipane. Serve warm or cold with crème fraiche or vanilla ice cream. • Flour, for dusting • 300g ready-made shortcrust pastry • 250g rhubarb, trimmed and chopped • 175g caster sugar • 3 tbsp orange juice • 150g unsalted butter, melted • 125g ground almonds • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 medium eggs, beaten • Icing sugar, for dusting

1. Preheat the oven to 200C/Fan 180C/Gas Mark 6. Lightly

dust a work surface with flour and roll out the pastry to about 3mm thickness. Use to line a 23cm loose-based fluted flan tin. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, place the rhubarb, 25g of the caster sugar and the orange juice in a shallow roasting tin. Roast in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes until just tender, turning once. Leave to cool.

3. Trim off the excess pastry from around the edge of the chilled

pastry case and prick the base all over with a fork. Line the case with baking paper and baking beans and bake blind for 10 minutes. Remove the beans and lining and bake for a further 5 minutes until pale golden.

4. Strain the rhubarb from the roasting juices and spoon into the pastry case. Beat together the melted butter, remaining caster sugar, ground almonds, vanilla extract and eggs in a bowl until smooth and creamy. Gently spread over the rhubarb.

5. Bake the tart for 30-35 minutes until the topping is golden and just set. Serve warm or cold dusted with icing sugar. See tip for serving suggestion. 51
