Some people love the process of home improvement. The whole choosing the furniture, the colours, the accessories and planning how everything is going to be laid out. I’m not one of them. But our house is 18 years old now and we’ve been really trying this year to start bringing it up to date, but much as I love the finished look, the getting there is a slog. As for husband Kevin, he wouldn’t even come to the showroom. As an aside, when he asked me to come and look at a new lawnmower with him I had no guilt in saying ‘categorically no’. However, a bit of envy got me moving on it. A friend of ours moved into a new home and visiting for the first time I realised that our house – although only 18 years old – had become dated and frumpy. These days, tiles in bathrooms are always fitted horizontally, not vertically, and forget the twiddly little border tiles half way up the wall. And if you still have carpet in your bathroom, well, ewww. Fancy coving and ceiling roses? Out. Inset spotlights in kitchens and bathrooms? In. Now, I have to say I’m a lot more interested in my life outside of the house than in it. I love the what’s on listings (p36) that our artwork and editorial coordinator Izzy pulls together for us. Particularly at this time of year there are some wonderful outdoor events to go to. But I can now see the pleasure that comes from having a nice home. So gritted teeth, keep focused on the finished product, and get on with it. And despite his reluctance Kevin will give an opinion on ‘this one or that one’ from the pile of catalogues I’ve accrued. I’m still not compromising on lawn mowers though.

GARDENING
The Grass Can Be Greener by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com Your garden should now be starting to look lush and green, with beds and borders beginning to come into their own. But if your lawn spoils it all, or you want to install one, now is the perfect time to get started.
Preparing the site Remove all weeds, large stones, debris and any old grass, then dig or fork over thoroughly to remove all taproots of weeds. Kill off an old lawn or a weed infested site with weedkiller based on glyphosate, then strip it off or dig it in once it all dies off. Incorporate organic matter to improve moisture retention on sandy soils; on heavy soils dig in grit and organic matter for drainage. Next, firm the whole area by treading it over evenly in flatsoled boots, then rake thoroughly and remove stones or other debris from the surface, treading gently
down again if necessary.
Buying turf Buy turf from a reputable supplier which is suitable for your requirements – some, especially those including lots of dwarf ryegrass, are much tougher, while some contain a seed mixture for use in shade. A ‘bowling green’ effect may look superb but will need more maintenance and be less hardwearing. Avoid cheaper turf as it can contain weeds, pests or diseases, or is simply not a good grass mixture. Arrange delivery of turf when you need it and never store for more than two days. It can remain rolled up for up to 24 hours, but for any longer unroll immediately, lay out flat on paving or plastic sheeting and water regularly.
Laying the turf Lay turves closely together and do not allow the edges to overlap. For an even finish, joins on each row should be staggered, like bricks in a wall. Lay the first row of turf using the adjacent path or lawn edging to form a straight line to work to. Roll out each turf carefully so that the edge abuts onto its neighbour.
10
Lay the next row, again ensuring that the long edges of each abut onto the long edges of the last row. To avoid damage, kneel on a plank placed over the previous row and continue until your new lawn is in position. If you need a small section of turf to complete a row, add this in the middle of a row rather than at the end so it is less likely to be dislodged or dry out. For a curved edge lay the turves so that they overlap the new lawn edge and cut to shape. When finished, gently tamp the area over using the back of a rake and if any turves sink place some extra soil underneath until they are level. Finally, brush in a mixture of horticultural sand and finely sieved soil over the surface, ensuring that gaps between the turves are filled in.
Care and maintenance Gently water the new lawn using a sprinkler, ensuring that the water penetrates right down to the root level. Water regularly in dry weather, particularly for the first couple of months whilst the roots establish and avoid walking on it during this time. You will soon have a gorgeous lawn to be proud of.

MOTORING
BMW At The Movies By James Baggott The BMW Z8 - on location with James Bond
There’s no greater advert for a car than a starring role in a movie – and for BMW there have been a few!
BMW Z3 Roadster
One of the biggest was when BMW took over the Bond franchise with a centrepiece in 1995 blockbuster GoldenEye. Bond, played by Pierce Brosnan, drives the first generation Z3 with Bond girl Natalya Simonova, played by Izabella Scorupco, in the passenger seat around Cuba before the final mission. As with many Bond cars, the Z3 was kitted out with the latest gadgets, including a parachute braking system, all-point radar, missiles housed behind the headlights, and the iconic ejector seat.
In the famous chase through a multi-storey car park, Bond drives the 750iL from the back seat to remain under cover and thanks to the screen on his phone can see everything. After jumping out of the car, Bond drives the BMW into the assailants before driving off the car park and into a rental car shop several floors below.
With little need for the Z3 in GoldenEye, which involved Bond driving a tank through Moscow, Brosnan returned in Tomorrow Never Dies and this film included one of the most impressive Bond cars, thanks to the amount of tech on-board.
With a modern and stylish roadster to accompany one of the most stylish film characters, the Z8 was met with an unfortunate end when a helicopter wielding a circular saw cut the car in half at a caviar factory. Shame. It was fitted with surface-to-air missiles that had taken out a helicopter previously and it even had six cup holders, so it was very useful.
Bond was given a 750iL that included bulletproof windows, electrified door handles, tear gas, spike dispenser and missiles concealed in the roof. The most impressive feature of the lot, however, was the fact the car could be remote controlled from a touchpad in Bond’s phone.
BMW’s most recent appearance in the Bond franchise was in The World Is Not Enough, and to close the century, BMW provided their final car of the 20th century, the Z8 roadster.
As a main character, Jason Statham’s E38 735i in 2002’s The Transporter is pretty key, with much of the early action ...Continued on page 20

involving the 7 Series. One of its best moments is the chase following the bank robbery, where Frank drives superbly around the streets and ends up jumping off a bridge onto a car transporter lorry. Noted for its driving sequences, 1998 film Ronin - set in Paris and Nice - involved plenty of action, and with the film nearing its final act, a BMW E34 M5 took place in one of the best chases in film. With the director wanting realism from every sequence, the Paris chase involved the M5, driven by Natascha McElhone’s Deirdre, with Robert De Niro pursuing in a Peugeot 406. The M5 dances between the traffic on both sides of the road, causing havoc as it drives around the congested city. Through tunnels and against the motorway traffic, the M5’s
sporting pedigree is shown off, with the throaty six-cylinder engine screaming throughout. The only way to take it down was a pot shot from Jean Reno hitting one of the tyres, causing the M5 to flip. We jump forward a little with our final car on the list to 2011, with the fourth instalment of the Mission: Impossible series. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol involved one of the best concept designs, the Vision EfficientDynamic from 2009, and was the pre-cursor to the i8 electric sports car.

INTERVIEW
Rick Astley After rising to fame in the eighties, Rick Astley is back on tour for 2016, with a soulful new album and single ‘Keep Singing’. He talked to the Evening Breeze’s Lucy Ambache about being a poster pin-up and how he appreciates the showbiz experience more secondtime-around. Lovely to meet you in person and not on my wall You’re putting me under pressure now! I had your lyrics up there. All the Smash Hits stuff Now you’re frightening me! No – Smash Hits was an honour! If you got on a centre-spread, my word, you’d cracked it. Back in the eighties, it was like ‘bam!’, there you were at twenty one with a massive hit with ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’. That must have been quite overwhelming? I think it was. I was signed to Stock Aitken & Waterman and they just seemed to knock hit after hit out. I think there was something about that song – I think it was the best song they ever wrote and I had a really good feeling about the tune itself, never mind me being involved or not. 30
Did you change? You do change a bit, because you change a bit anyway – that’s life. But I think it accelerated a lot of things. In lots of ways I didn’t really grow up. Is that why you retired early? Was it too unreal? I think it was just a bit mad really and four or five years of chasing around. I think at the end of it I’d had enough really. Rightly or wrongly, I said to myself “you either do it or you don’t”. You can’t say to a record label “I want six months off and put my career on hold”. In pop, anyway. So you’re back with new music. You’ve got a new single called ‘Keep Singing’.
album, but these days it seems that people release an album so they can go on tour because that’s where the money is. I didn’t really think that through! All I wanted to do was a little tour and the album is out in June. When do you do the big hits in the live shows? What’s your set list? I haven’t even got a set list yet! It’s very difficult because I know people want to catch a bus as well and I don’t want them waiting for ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ if they‘re trying to get the last bus home! Thank you Rick, and lovely to meet you! Have you still got my poster by the way?
Rick: Yeah I’ve enjoyed singing my old songs and value it more than I did when I had hits with them because they are some people’s memories – and as I’ve got older, I’ve learnt to appreciate what that means. Having said that, it’s nice to sing something different. My band and I sometimes learn covers to shake things up a bit and at the beginning of last year, I decided to make a record. I just locked myself in a room and this is what I’ve come up with basically.
Um
Are you putting together an album then? Are you going on tour?
Lucy Ambache presents the Evening Breeze, Sunday to Thursday 7-10pm. To hear a selection of her interviews, go to www.thebreeze.com.
Kind of yeah. It used to be that you would tour to support your
You’ve binned it haven’t you! Did you keep Bros’?! It might have gone into the recycling. That’s alright. I’ll send you one.

And Another Thing... Where Tom Does ‘Snapchat’ by Tom Hughes
34
“Tom? Tom! Put down that silly magazine and listen.” “It’s not a silly magazine. Look at that split-screen camper - isn’t she lovely?” “Amazing. Listen, it’s about Hannah.” My ears pricked up at the mention of our teenage protégé. “What about Hannah?” “Well, you know that boy she likes at school? The good-looking one that’s taller than you?” “No. But do continue.” “Well - and don’t breathe a word they’re talking.” “What about?” “Does it matter? The main thing is that they’re talking. Isn’t it exciting!” “Thrilling. Are they talking now? Do you want me to go and listen?” “No! Don’t be nosey. Just be happy that she’s talking to a nice boy. Here she comes. And no smart remarks thank you.” And with that Hannah, mobile device positioned firmly in front of her face, plopped down on the sofa opposite. A pause, then. “So, your mother informs me that you’re talking to a boy.” “Mmnn.”
not much of a conversation.” Hannah rolled her eyes as she held up her phone. “Er, Snapchat, hello?” “And how do you do Snapchat?” “You just ‘do’ Snapchat, OK?” Sarah tried to explain. “Tom, it’s a messaging app. It’s like texting but more...teenagey.” “Well I was texting Nigel last night asking could I borrow his nail gun and I don’t remember anyone getting giddy about that.” “Tom, talking, in this context means that they are, well you know, talking.” “I think I’ve just about grasped that concept, thank you. And so what comes next?” Sarah leant over and eyes widening said, “Well after talking, if it goes well, then it’s... speaking!” My mouth dropped open in astonishment - who’d have thought? I was about to throw in my twopenn’orth when up piped Hannah.
“Are you talking now? Well it’s
My Dearly Beloved and I returned
“Er, I am actually here in the room you know? For goodness sake!” (Or words to that effect). With parental embarrassment now at its absolute zenith, Hannah, her eyes rolling like a zombie, flounced out in disgust.
to watching Wanted Down Under. “That wife is bullying him into going, why doesn’t he just tell her? I say dear, she’s..what’s the matter?” “Tom, after the way you spoke to Hannah about that boy, well I wouldn’t be surprised if they ended up not speaking at all. Anyway I’m not staying here, I’m off out.” “Where to?” “None of your business. And do you know why? Because…we’re not speaking!” Fortunately, in short order Hannah and her new squeeze did in fact begin “speaking” and very soon after (proving the ancient maxim that ‘faint heart ne’er won fair lady’) Hannah was asked out on a date to the cinema. And who was the chauffeur for this romantic interlude? You know it brother. So, after just three hours of hysteria about which outfit to wear (during which time I went about my chores with Benny Goodman playing blissfully on my fruit-based MP3 player) we were ready. Then, just as I pulled up outside an annoyingly large detached house, Hannah self combusted with embarrassment. Why? Because I (not unreasonably in my view) dared to beep my horn.
“Dad!! For goodness sake!” (Or words to that effect). Eventually, Adam appeared. Gangly, spotty and smelling of a mixture of nerves and Hugo Boss, he flopped into the back seat. “ThnkufrtkngustocinewrldmrHughes.” “Don’t mention it...I think.” The whole journey was conducted in complete, stony silence. Eventually we reached the Multiplex. Wordlessly, the happy couple exited via a rear door. I shouted after them, “Oi, I thought you two were speaking?” Cue eye rolls all round! And so Adam and Hannah became a couple and all was well. That is, until three weeks ago when Sarah rushed in carrying an emergency tub of Ben and Jerry’s. I dropped everything and plumped up the cushions. “Tom? Can Hannah sit next to you for a bit, she needs her Dad.” And so, as a tear-stained daughter snuggled up to next me and began scooping ice cream determinedly into her mouth, we settled down to watch Annie Hall. In complete silence. Follow Tom @groomsdaybook groomsdaybook.com

Could You Help Someone On Their Journey To Employment? Winchester District Employment Mentoring, a service that helps unemployed people back into work, has been running for more than a year and is in need of a fourth group of new volunteers. The service has continued to be highly popular, which means more volunteers are needed to help. The project, which is funded by Winchester City Council and run by national charity Sova, recruits local mentors to support unemployed residents in the Winchester District, and is going from strength to strength. The scheme is in place because Winchester City Council recognised that each individual has different challenges to face
on their journey to employment. Over the last year, volunteer mentors have been supporting people to realise their potential by being a source of encouragement and motivation, and helping them to learn new skills and build selfconfidence. Sova is looking for new volunteer mentors to help unemployed people living within the Winchester District. No formal qualifications or experience are necessary; but volunteers will need to be committed to supporting others, have good listening and communication skills and demonstrate a nonjudgmental attitude. All mentors will receive on-going supervision and thorough training.

TECHNOLOGY
Phone Home Are you ready to control everything in your house with a smartphone app? In the 1930s, magazines predicted a really exciting thing called the smart home - a home where everything was automated and easy to control. It’s taken its time to turn up, but smart home technology is finally here. From your boiler to your light bulbs, there’s an app for almost everything. Most smart home technology is designed to connect to your Wi-Fi network, either directly or via a little box called a hub. Once it’s connected you can then control it from your phone. There are smart thermostats, such as Google’s
Nest and British Gas’s Hive, that can automate your heating and even turn the heater up and down when you’re away from home. There are smart bulbs, such as Philips’ Hue, that can completely change the colour of your room with a single tap of your phone’s screen. There are smart baby monitors such as BabyPing that stream video of your (hopefully!) sleeping child to your phone, and there is a whole selection of smart cameras that you can use to monitor your house. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Both Apple and Google 38
have bet on home automation as one of the next big things, so they’re encouraging firms to make even more smart devices - although inevitably, Apple and Google’s systems aren’t compatible with one another so you need to pick sides. That’ll change in the longer term, because it’s in nobody’s interest to have rival, incompatible systems for such basics as light switches and heating controls, but at the moment it’s really important to check compatibility - so for example if you want to control smart home technology via an Apple iPhone or Apple Watch, you should look for devices that support Apple’s HomeKit. If you don’t, you could end up in a situation where you need a different app for each smart home product you buy, which is hardly making things simple. If you’re wondering what’s so smart about smart home technology, the answer is that by connecting different things together you can make interesting things happen. For example, Philips’ Hue bulbs work with Apple’s Siri voice recognition,
DeLonghi PrimaDonna Elite Wi-Fi coffee machine
so you can say “Hey Siri! Set scene to movie!” and the lights will change. Nest learns your habits to work out the best times and temperatures for heating your home, and can talk to your phone, see that you’re heading home from work and make sure the house is nice and toasty for your arrival. Sky’s latest Sky Q system can send video including your recordings - from your Sky box to any other room in the house, or to your phone or tablet when you’re far from home. There’s a catch, of course. Because this is all brand new technology, it’s quite expensive - so if you fancy a Bluetoothenabled DeLonghi coffee machine that you can command from the sofa, it’ll cost £1,500. Even relatively simple devices can be expensive, so for example smart plugs for remotely turning things on and off cost around £40, while a starter kit of three Philips Hue bulbs and a hub will set you back £149. Upgrading from Sky+HD to Sky Q costs from £99 to £249 and then comes in at £56 per month. As ever, being first on the block with new technology doesn’t come cheap so maybe the really smart homes will wait until the technology gets cheaper before taking the plunge.

Outdoor Living By Katherine Sorrell Syon relaxer set, £599, Wyevale Garden Centres, 0344 272 3000; www.wyevalegardencentres.co.uk.
Longer days and (fingers crossed) lots of sunshine mean it’s time to head out to the garden. However large or small your outside space, some careful planning will ensure that it is flexible enough for playing games, entertaining or simply putting your feet up and relaxing, writes Katherine Sorrell
Bundle hanging chair, £395, Idyll Home, 01270 812717; www. idyllhome.co.uk 42
The days of formal, look-butdon’t-touch gardens, with manicured lawns and ranks of ordered flowers in borders are – most would say thankfully – long gone. Today’s gardens are more like an outdoor room, used for playing, cooking, socialising and resting; in other words, they are multifunctional spaces that look good but also work hard for every member of the family. It sounds wonderful, but if your garden is in need of an update, just how do you go about achieving this magical blend of practical and pretty? The secret, of course, is in the planning. Look at the bigger picture first. How will you use the space and what do you want from it? To begin with, sketch a plan of your garden on graph paper, and gather samples of the materials you intend to use – such as slate, willow or terracotta – to ensure that they co-ordinate. If in doubt, consider consulting a professional, whose training and experience means they will undoubtedly come up with practical solutions and inspirational ideas you would never have thought of yourself. In a large garden, the ideal
layout includes separate areas for dining, relaxing and playing – perhaps with a ‘secret’ children’s area at the far end, including structures such as a swing, trampoline, climbing frame or tepee. A peaceful area away from both the house and the kids would be the ideal spot for a hammock or a deck chair – perhaps near some scented flowers or under a tree for shade. And the dining area is best set closest to the house, with space nearby for a barbecue or perhaps even an outdoor kitchen. Consider changes in levels – they add interest to a garden and are easier to deal with than slopes – but if you are carrying a tray out from the house, it’s best to avoid lots of steps between the door and the dining table. Flooring is key, too, dramatically affecting both how your garden looks and also how it feels underfoot. Will you choose stone slabs, gravel, bricks, decking, wood chips or perhaps tiles that complement the flooring in your kitchen for an inside-outside look? Just like indoors, where different types of flooring can differentiate, say, a kitchen from a dining room, your choice of garden flooring can signal a change from one area
to another. It is also a question of practicality and cost: specify a few stone slabs for the dining area, for example, and save money with woodchips in the children’s play area. Verticals are just as important, providing privacy, screening and dividing, adding visual interest and offering places for climbers to grow. Think about fences (dull ones can be changed fairly easily, or painted a bright colour for va va voom), hedges, walls, arches, arbours and pergolas – a simple metal archway over a path, for example, entwined with fragrant honeysuckle, would make a lovely focal point, while a small wooden pergola can provide a link between two different areas of the garden as well as offering a shaded spot in which to sit. Finally, furniture. Take the indoors outside with waterproof
upholstery, outdoor sofas and all-weather rattan, choosing designs and colourways that link with the whole space. You can even accessorise outdoor sofas with scatter cushions and interior throws or blankets for when it gets chilly. Meanwhile, if space is restricted, opt for folding furniture and play equipment that can be put away when necessary, or consider building seating into your hard landscaping – an extra-wide low wall makes a great bench seat, for example, and you can even build in hinged storage for cushions.

Mottisfont This is the perfect place for dads to demonstrate their skills at some of the Trust’s famous ’50 things to do before you’re 11¾’ challenges. Mottisfont is set on the sparkling River Test, so they can challenge their families to Pooh Stick races, or try out the Wild Play trail and test everyone’s limits in the boggy climbing area. Then it’s into the woods to master those den-building skills, before collapsing on the lawn for a picnic.
46
Fancy getting up close to some of the biggest names in 20th-century art? Mottisfont’s latest exhibition, the Schlee Collection, features a substantial selection of drawings and sketches from some of Britain’s most famous artists, including Henry Moore, David Hockney and Paul Nash. This major private collection, from Southampton City Art Gallery has rarely been exhibited. Hinton Ampner Acres of estate means hours of fun for visiting families. Dads can lead the way through beautiful beech woodland along winding paths, where there are plenty of materials to make secret hideaways. This is a great opportunity to try some other ’50 things’ tasks, such as hunting for wildlife tracks, and searching for bugs – peer into and under fallen branches to see all sorts of minibeasts.
Then relax on the lawn overlooking the South Downs to make squeaky grass ‘trumpets’ and daisy chains. Hinton’s tea room is renowned for its homemade treats, which often include produce from the kitchen garden, so why not treat dads to one of the latest cake recipes? There’s a good range of local beers and ales too, from Flack Manor Bowmans and Tuts Clump.
