tipTravel magazine is the first Croatian online travel and tourism magazine, which is exclusively in digital format and available to all readers free of charge. Sailing into autumn I n Croatia, the official end of summer does not mean it is the end of vacations and spending time outdoors, enjoying the sea and many activities under the warm sun, events under starry skies... It also doesn't mean the end of discovering charming towns and irresistible flavors that win over gourmets from all over the world. Those who love the sea and sailing know that autumn is the perfect time to make their nautical dreams come true in the Adriatic. There are no more crowds, the sun is still warm, but the temperatures are more pleasant, the winds are better, it is easy to find available berths in harbors and marinas, and at sea, it is just you and the seagulls, the sound of the waves, the wind, and the sails... Yes, that is the feeling worth living for and heading down to the south of Croatia, where you will find a true nautical treat that we have tried to depict for you on the upcoming pages. Heavenly coves and islands, a warm and clean sea, old, charming stone towns, the incredible flavors of local food and wine... they

are just part of the story. The other part, still untold and so less-known, is kept by the old stone lighthouses you will pass by and their legendary lights. Make sure to follow them if you sail under the stars. And while the sun shines, it is best to photograph the destinations you visit. The colors best come into play then, and the photos are the sharpest - as photographers will unanimously agree, although they won't agree about which destinations in the world are most photogenic. There are truly many, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Still, we have selected a few that are known as some of the greatest photographic meccas. While traveling this autumn, use your camera or phone (many of which today have a quality and resolution that can compete with "serious" cameras) and take some of the best shots of your destinations. Sunken Roman ship discovered near Pag

In August 2018, a sunken Roman ship, which is assumed to date back to the beginning of the first century before Christ, was found near the island of Pag. It is a great new attraction for diving tourism in Croatia which, with around 180 diving centers, has recorded constant growth. According to the Tomas Summer 2017 research by the Institute for Tourism, diving is the reason more than 6 percent of those surveyed said was their motive for coming to Croatia, while when choosing an activity during their stay, 16.3 percent of guests choose diving. Most of them, 20 percent to be precise, are up to 29 years old.

The digital transformation of Croatian tourism This year, World Tourism Day, which is celebrated on September 27 every year, is dedicated to the topic "Tourism and Digital Transformation", with which the goal is to raise awareness of the importance of digital technology in the development of tourism. In preparation for World Tourism Day, Croatian Minister of Tourism, Gari Cappelli, and director of the Croatian National Tourist Board, Kristijan Staničić, emphasized the importance of digital transformation in the connection between people in tourism, promotion, and the establishment of efficient business practices. Once again, they also reminded everyone of the "Croatian Digital Tourism: e-tourism" project, worth 40 million kuna, which has the goal of connecting users and public administration in tourism. 8

Joint promotion of Croatia and Slovenia in China For the first time, the European Travel Commission approved funding for promotion on the Chinese market for a joint campaign by the Croatian National Tourist Board and the Slovenian Tourist Board. The campaign called "Experience Croatia, Feel Slovenia" has the goal of improving the visibility and reputation of the two countries on the Chinese market as attractive and authentic European travel destinations, and increasing the number of Chinese tourists. The campaign exceeds 200 thousand euros, and half is co-financed with European money. Activities planned for the campaign will be conducted from October 2018 to March 2019.

KLM introduced the Google Pay payment option for the Croatian market In order to adapt to market trends and young travelers and ease the process of buying airline tickets, KLM airlines added the Google Pay payment option to their existing KLM application. Besides in Croatia, the option is also available to app users in Great Britain, the USA, Spain, Germany, Brazil, Poland, and Slovakia, and Google has announced that Google Pay will be available worldwide. KLM is one of the first European airline companies that offers the option of saving boarding data on the Google Pay app.

easyJet selected Croatia as the destination of the year British airline company easyJet named Croatia the destination of the year, which was additionally confirmed in the publication of the July edition of their in-flight magazine, which, for the first time in history, was dedicated to just one country - Croatia. It is a publication designed for users of their services, which will contribute to an additional promotion of Croatian destinations since the magazine reaches more than 6 million travelers on a monthly basis.

Direct flights between Zagreb and Seoul introduced As of September 1, 2018, Croatia and South Korea are connected with a direct Zagreb - Seoul flight three times per week. A Korean Air Airbus 330-200, with a capacity of 218 seats, flies the route. The number of Korean tourists visiting Croatia increases every year, and over the past few years, the largest number of tourists in Zagreb are tourists from that market. Besides the capital, other Croatian destinations they most often visit are Dubrovnik, Plitvice Lakes National Park, and Trogir.

After 28 years, as of the summer of 2019, Croatia and the USA will once again be connected with direct flights. A new American Airlines connection will link Dubrovnik and Philadelphia three times per week from June 7 to September 27. A Boeing 767-300, with a capacity of 28 highly luxurious seats in business class and 181 seats in economy class, will fly the route. Passengers will have access to Wi-Fi services throughout the entire flight.

Emirates and flydubai to join forces on the Dubai - Zagreb flight Emirates and their partner airline flydubai have announced that flydubai will take over flights between Dubai and Zagreb from December 2, 2018 to March 30, 2019, after which Emirates will once again take over the flights. In that way, they will use the existing capacity in the best possible way to satisfy the demand of increased frequency on the line in question during the winter months. September - November 2018

According to data from the eCrew system, during the first six months of 2018, there were a total of 15 thousand arrivals and 92 thousand overnight stays in nautical charters in the Dubrovnik and Neretva County, which is an increase of 45 and 36 percent, respectively, in comparison to the previous year. The largest number of overnight stays were by guests from the markets of Great Britain, Australia, the USA, Germany, and Croatia. ©

Experienced sailors say late spring and early autumn are the best times of the year to tighten the sails, head out to sea, feel the freedom, and enjoy the moment. At that time, the temperatures are pleasant, sunshine is guaranteed, the sea is warm, the winds are good, and the crowds in travel destinations and marinas are smaller in comparison to those in the summer months. A true nautical treat awaits you then in the far south of Croatia, which is comprised of an attractive coastline and heavenly islands and islets, some of which guard valuable heritage - lighthouses. n dark nights, they light the way for sailors and fishermen, while in storms, they are a beacon of safety and home. To others, those who aren't connected to the sea, lighthouses are an attractive sight that exude mystique and grandeur. Today, there are more and more people who want to spend their vacations in those impressive buildings, which are often "anchored" on isolated islands and skerries in the middle of the sea, far from the hustle and bustle and civilization, noise, and the masses. Southern Croatia is home to some of the most attractive lighthouses on the eastern coast of the Adriatic. Some have been adapted for tourism, so, if you reserve them far enough in advance, you will experience a vacation to remember. It's just you (and your companions), the sea and crashing waves, the call of seagulls, indescribable peace, and the starry sky that watches over you at night. And the light, which never goes out.

Besides rain, the jugo wind brings headaches, bad moods, and irritability to many. In the former Dubrovnik Republic, no meetings were held, nor were any decisions made when the south wind blew, and crimes committed during that time were treated more leniently due to the bad effects jugo had on people's moods.

Before you head out on your adventure at sea, find out more about the most common winds that can await you at sea. They are, along with the warm sea and beautiful landscape, one of the reasons sailors love the Adriatic since it offers pleasant sailing conditions. The direction they blow is often aimed towards passages and channels between islands, which offers additional protection while sailing. Maestral bears the title of the most-favored wind in the Adriatic, and it brings light refreshment on warm days, and it is ideal for sailing. The strongest Adriatic wind is bura. It is cold, blows from the mainland to the sea, and brings no precipitation. However, it can be relatively strong, it blows intermittently, and its direction varies, so it is best to batten down the hatches in a protected cove and enjoy its strength until it passes. The humid, warm south wind, jugo, blows from the sea to the mainland and brings rain. Whether you decide to forcefully sail with that wind or drop anchor until it passes is up to you. There is also the night wind, burin, the cold tramontana, which forecasts better weather, the eastern levanat wind, and the warm, humid, and strong southern wind oĹĄtro, or lebiÄ&#x2021;, which blows for a short period...

You've gathered a group of friends, set a date, chartered a boat and a skipper (or have taken on the role yourself ), or you're coming with your own boat... and the adventure can start. Let your starting point be Dubrovnik, the tourist gem that has won over the hearts of tourists all over the world, and over the past few years has also been a popular filming location. Dubrovnik is also the southernmost large harbor in Croatia, and it is also home to the ACI Marina Dubrovnik, located at the delta of the Ombla River, just six kilometers away from the center of the old city. The marina has 380 wet berths and plenty of facilities, and mega yachts of up to 60 meters in length can also drop anchor there. Soon, a new marina will open in the part of the city called Lapad. Large and small boats and yachts gladly moor in Dubrovnik, and the passengers on some of them will have the privilege of having breakfast with a view of the old city center and the famous walls and towers that have made that city famous worldwide. Near Dubrovnik is the lovely town of Cavtat, where you can also find a berth in its harbor, which mega yachts flock to, especially in the summer months. You can make your nautical dreams come true in the Dubrovnik area if you head towards the heavenly Elaphiti islands (the Elaphites), which are comprised of eight islands and five islets, with many skerries and reefs, all splashed by the turquoise sea. The three largest and only inhabited islands are Šipan, Lopud, and Koločep, where it is definitely worth dropping anchor and spending some time swimming and diving in their pearly coves. Šipan, covered in vineyards, olive groves, and citrus orchards, has an abundance of gorgeous natural anchorages, and you will find restaurants and taverns offering seafood delicacies in the two largest settlements on the island, Šipanska Luka, and Suđurađ. Take some time there to stroll alongside the many churches, monasteries, and summer homes that were built by the wealthier citizens of Dubrovnik. Make sure to stop by Lopud, an island of white sandy beaches and coves, of which Šunj is the most popular. That island is a true treasure trove of artwork housed in its monasteries, churches, and summer homes, which give the sense that people once relaxed and enjoyed their time there. Koločep also boasts sandy beaches. Drop anchor in Gornje or Donje Čelo, the two largest coves on the island, and bear witness to the indescribable peace and quiet that reigns over the island, while you enjoy the aromatic cocktail of its pine trees and Mediterranean herbs. Perhaps you will see one of the islanders returning from harvesting corals. The formerly most famous coral harvesters in the Mediterranean rarely harvest nowadays, and when they do so, they say, they do it for love.

Sail around the other Elaphiti islands as well. Upon leaving Dubrovnik, you will first pass by the smallest Elaphite islet, Daksa, "anchored" in front of Gruž harbor in Dubrovnik, located two nautical miles away. At its northwestern point, there are still the ruins of a lighthouse that dates back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. If you sail south of Daksa, you will reach Grebeni, a group of reefs that also belong to the Elaphiti islands. There you will find a stone lighthouse that dates back to 1872 that is still functional, and the walls of the lighthouse building are more than a meter thick. It is powered by solar panels, and rainwater fills the reservoir that is located under the building. Due to the many reefs and skerries that are above and below the surface of the water, sailing around Grebeni is a true challenge and is recommended only experienced sea dogs do it since it can be dangerous. Only some parts of those skerries are accessible from the sea, with the exception of the northern side of the skerry, where a dock was built. During calm weather, Grebeni is a magnet for divers, since its underwater world is home to small underwater caves, schools of small, red fish (swallowtail sea perch), and many shipwrecks. According to legend, in the deep waters surrounding Grebeni, there is a small sunken ship that was transporting gold from Dubrovnik's treasury to Venice as "protection" of the independence

The island has been named a natural reserve, and a special reserve of forest vegetation, and it also includes a botanical garden. It is worth taking a walk to the so-called Dead Sea, a lake that is connected to the open sea and is a favorite place to swim, especially for children. There is also a Benedictine monastery on the island, as well as several restaurants and a cocktail bar where you can find refreshments and sustenance. ©

Head over to the much tamer, and also southernmost Elaphiti island, St. Andrija, located seven nautical miles southwest of Dubrovnik, and two miles from Lopud. Although it is best described as having steep cliffs, it is tamest from the western side. Its first inhabitants were Benedictine monks, and, unfortunately, the monastery was destroyed by an earthquake in 1667, and never rebuilt. Today, a lighthouse built in 1873 by the Austro-Hungarian government dominates the island, and its light is one of the strongest in the Adriatic. Next to the lighthouse, there is a power station and a storage area, and a lighthouse keeper lives there permanently. In the warmer months, he is often kept company by tourists, since there is a suite on the top floor that can be rented. There is a legend of unhappy love tied to the islet, which the people of Dubrovnik will gladly share with you. Due to the many kinds of birds living there, the island has been named an ornithological reserve.

Sail on further towards Mljet, the greenest Adriatic island, which they also call Odyssey's island. The Greek hero also sailed to Mljet and while sailing around it, he achieved his nautical dreams, and then, according to legend, he was seduced by the nymph Calypso in a cave (which now bears his name, Odyssey's cave). If you have a boat and the weather is calm you can sail into that cave, which is the most popular one on Mljet. You can also sail your sailboat or yacht into Mljet's many coves, where you can swim in the clear emerald sea. The island has many berths, and the naturally protected harbors of Okuklje and Polače are amongst the most popular. There are several restaurants there, and in Polače you can tour the ruins of Roman summer villas, Illyrian fortifications, and medieval churches. Sailors also like to drop anchor in Sobra, an old fishing village, which is also the center of maritime traffic on the island, followed by Prožurska Luka, a fishing village where they used to build and repair gajeta ships and boats, and in Pomena, the center of tourism on the island. From Pomena, you can quickly reach Veliko and Malo Jezero (Large and Small Lake), natural phenomena and the main attraction of Mljet National Park, which covers the northwestern part of the island. Explore the park by canoe, on bike, or on foot, and make sure to visit the islet of St. Mary, which has a church and Benedictine monastery and is located in Veliko Jezero, and is the most famous motif of postcards from Mljet. If you would like to get off the boat and feel the warm sand under your toes, head over to the southeastern side of the island where there are many sandy beaches. If you are looking for hidden pebble beaches, you will find them in Sutmiholjska and Garma bays, which will win over every nautical heart with their beauty, peace, and untouched nature. Alongside legendary Glavat Although it is difficult to part with Mljet's bays, southern Croatia is home to more heavenly landscapes that you will also want to sail to, and then drop anchor in. Tighten the sails, and steer the bow towards the island of Lastovo. On your way, you will pass by Glavat, the tallest island in the Vrhovnjak archipelago, located eight nautical miles from Mljet, nine from Lastovo, and 12 from Korčula. The stone lighthouse keeper's house on Glavat that dates back to 1884 is one of the largest in the Croatian part of the Adriatic, and the light it emits dominates the entire archipelago. A lighthouse keeper lives at the lighthouse, and divers often visit the surrounding waters for its many caves. In contrast to the other faraway islands in the Adriatic, precipitation is more common on Glavat, so the island is greener, especially in the spring months. There is also a legend connected to Glavat, according to which the Greek god Zeus sent a delegate to find the most beautiful island in the world, so that the discussion held on Mount Olympus as to whether it was Lastovo, Mljet, or Korčula would stop. He observed the islands for a long time, but he couldn't decide. Due to his indecisiveness, the gods turned him into stone - the present-day islet of Glavat, which is also the easternmost island of the Lastovo archipelago that to sailors sometimes seems to be a mirage.

As you approach the island of Lastovo, you will also pass by the other Vrhnovnjak islands (a group of islets including the already-mentioned Glavat), followed by the Lastovnjak islands, a group of islets and skerries located several miles east of Lastovo. And then you will arrive at that faraway island, trapped in time and endless beauty, which sleeps beneath the starriest sky you can possibly imagine. The entire archipelago of 46 islands, islets, skerries, and reefs, known as the Lastovo Islands, bears the status of the youngest nature park in Croatia, and biologically it is one of the best-preserved areas in the Mediterranean. Lastovo is also the southernmost inhabited island in Croatia - with just around 800 inhabitants. Sailing under the stars

Make sure to sail into Korita Bay, drop anchor in protected Zaklopatica, a favorite amongst sailors, on the north side of the island, where you will find restaurants with mooring and a view of the neighboring island of Korčula and the Lastovo Channel. Some of the best-protected bays on the island are Jurjeva Luka and Skrivena Luka (Portorosso), where you will find the Nautical Center Porto Rosso with berths, sanitary facilities, a tavern, cocktail bar, and pebble beach. In front of the tavern is a pontoon pier with around 30 berths for boats up to 40 m in length. The sea ranges from 1.5 to 9 meters in depth there, and each berth has water and electrical connections. Sail to the islet of Mladine, which is home to one of Lastovo's most beautiful beaches - Saplun.

You will experience a hint of civilization in Pasadur, a town on the western part of the island, on the very convergence of two beautiful bays - Velo and Malo Lago. There you will also find the only hotel on the island, along with a marina that offers berths for 30 yachts and water and electrical connections. A gas pump can be found on Lastovo in the town of Ubli, located one nautical mile away from the marina in Pasadur. While on Lastovo, it is truly worth disembarking the boat and walking through its main town, Lastovo, photographing some of its creatively decorated fumari (chimneys), a symbol of the island, popping into some of the many churches, and heading down to Lučica, a narrow bay with a protected fishing village, which can only be accessed by smaller boats. If you like depths, jump off the boat into one of the pearly coves (in some, the seabed can be seen at a depth of about 50 meters) and explore Lastovo's abundant underwater world, full of caves, hidden passages, archeological sites, sunken galley ships with amphoras, coral, sponges, crabs, seashells... Later, try the seafood, along with other kinds of fish, on the plates at Lastovo's taverns and restaurants. Some of the most famous island dishes are sardines roasted on a spit, and chickpeas with salted sardines, conger eel brodetto, and grilled muraena, all enriched with drops of local olive oil. If you aren't a fan of seafood, it is recommended you try chicken, goat meat, and lamb roasted under the bell. Round everything off with a glass of wine made with Maraština and Plavac Mali grapes, with the unavoidable desserts - skalice (kroštule), fritule, kotonjata (quince jelly), and arancini (sugared orange peel), along with lemon or carob schnapps.

The Lastovo Islands are also home to some of the most beautiful lighthouses in the Adriatic. Along with the already-mentioned Glavat, the island of Sušac with a lighthouse bearing the same name, located 13 nautical miles west of Lastovo, is also part of the Lastovo archipelago. It was built in 1878 on the highest peak of the southern and relatively steep part of the island, and from a distance, it seems as if it is made up of two islands. The lighthouse keeper's building contains not only the lighthouse keeper's apartment, but also two suites that can be rented, which offer a view of the endless open sea. In the past, a total of two hundred people lived on the island, and nowadays, there are just two - the lighthouse keeper, and the shepherd that visits the other part of the island from time to time to tend to his sheep. The permanent inhabitants of the island include the ruins of two churches, the old settlement, military facilities, and old olive groves and fields. In the summer, up to ten people live on the island, interested in the charms life at a lighthouse brings. The island is also a favorite spot for divers due to the sea lake, which can be reached from the sea by diving through a cave. Sailors also love to circle around the island, especially around its southeastern, tamer part, where there are several gorgeous bays. Not only are they accessible by boat, but also by land via many trails that gradually lead down to the sea.

In the late 19th century, in the waters around Struga, a fisherman caught a large lobster that weighed more than 18 kg and then sent it to the Austro-Hungarian emperor, Franz Joseph I. As a sign of gratitude, the emperor sent him a crate of coffee and sugar. In 1950, at the same location where the lobster was caught, coral hunters extracted a coral weighing 45 kg, which was also allegedly the largest coral ever extracted from the Adriatic.

Lastovo, as the largest island in the archipelago, is also home to a lighthouse, which is one of the oldest ones in the Adriatic. It is located on the southern side of the island, at the sea entrance to the Skrivena Luka bay, at Pt. Struga, whose name it shares. It has stood the test of time on the steep cliff, which offers a fantastic view of the sea, since 1839. Struga has also been made available to tourists and you can stay there, and it has easy access to the beach and to the sea that leads through a pine forest. The waters around Struga are rich in corals and gorgonians, which attract many divers. There is another smaller lighthouse in the Lastovo archipelago, Tajan, which together with the already-mentioned Glavat, Sušac, and Struga, dominates the area. During the night, the stone lights have helpers - millions of crystal stars that reign over the island. There, with your bare eye, you can also see the hazy white trail - the Milky Way, which includes a total of 219 million stars. Lastovo also has the second darkest and most beautiful starry sky in Europe, so it is also a favorite destination amongst astronomers who want to come and enjoy that magnificent view.

In the evening hours, duck into a tavern or a superb restaurant and enjoy the culinary journey it will take you on. The following morning, sail around the nearby coves and islets, which offer not only untouched nature, but also a safe harbor. Some of the favorites amongst sailors are Kneže (which has several restaurants), Račišće, Vaja, and Samograd Bay, and Pupnatska Luka on the southern side of the island is known as one of the prettiest. On the same side, you will find the somewhat narrower bays of Bačva and Žitna. You can also drop anchor in Lumbarda, a town near the city of Korčula, where you will also find Lučica. However, that isn't the only lighthouse near Korčula worth sailing around, disembarking on, renting, and enjoying adventures on an isolated islet. The Pločica lighthouse is located on an island that bears the same name, which is splashed by the shallow sea and located in the Korčula Channel, between the islands of Korčula and Hvar, and Pelješac peninsula. As you approach it, it will be clear why it bears that name (pločica = tile) - due to the flat and low appearance of the island, from far away it looks like a tile that has emerged from the sea. Its lighthouse has stood the test of time since 1887 and has been home to many lighthouse keepers and their families who survived on the island by eating fish they caught and fruits and vegetables they managed to grow on the barren land surrounded by dry stone walls.

You still haven't finished your nautical dreams on Korčula, because the other side of the island is home to untouched coves, a true attraction for sailors. You can also drop anchor in Karbuni Bay, protected from winds, nearby which there are many islets with hidden coves for swimming, diving, sunbathing... On that same, southern side of the island, you will find attractive Prižba, with several smaller coves and two peninsulas. In Prižba, surrounded by vineyards and the extravagant villas formerly owned by aristocrats, refresh yourself in some of the restaurants and bars and sail off to the nearby islands, which are perfect places for enjoying the sun and the sea. It is worth the effort to sail to the northwestern side of the island to Prigradica Bay, which is recognizable for its large promenade and stone and pebble beaches. There you will find restaurants and cafés, along with plenty of facilities for an active vacation on land. The western side of the island, where Vela Luka is located in a deep, protected bay, is also worth a visit. Along with plenty of berths, there you will also find superb restaurants with delicious island specialties, along with a lot of other things to do. Another naturally closed and protected bay is Gradina, and in Vela Luka the construction of a marina has started which will offer plenty of facilities for sailors in the upcoming years. Sail off to the most popular island of the Vela Luka archipelago, Proizd, which has pearly beaches that take the breath away of anyone who visits them. The white stone immersed in the turquoise sea at the Bili Boci beach, on the northern side of the island, definitely places the beach amongst the most attractive beaches on the Adriatic. There is also a small dock on the island, next to which there is a restaurant that offers local and international cuisine. Sail around the islet of Ošjak, which is also known as the "island of love", and while on the western side of the island of Korčula, don't forget to watch the irresistible sunset at dusk.

Full of impressions from Korčula, we continue sailing towards the peninsula of Pelješac, another guardian of heavenly coves. One of the most attractive ones is Kobaš in the Ston Channel, with a sandy beach and mooring, and three restaurants that offer culinary experiences. You will also find berths in the town of Broce, as well as in Ston, near the famous salt pans of the Ston salt works. While there, tour the Ston wall, the longest wall in Europe, and the second-longest in the world, right after the Great Wall of China. Bays that every sailor makes sure to visit are Žuljana, on the southern part of the peninsula, and Lovište, at the very end of the peninsula. That bay is naturally protected and offers a view of the island of Hvar. While on Pelješac, you should sail through its food and wine offer, and try oysters in Maloston Bay, which gourmands from all over the world lust after. Precious drops of extra virgin olive oil and Pelješac wine, which have become famous worldwide with reason, are features of Pelješac (home of the Plavac Mali sort) that you must also try. A good starting point for sailing through the attractive south of Croatia and exploring its islands and coves is Slano, a tourist oasis in the Dubrovnik Riviera, which is home to a newer nautical base, the ACI marina "Veljko Barbieri" Slano. The marina is well-protected from all winds, and it is located in a location that was a well-known mooring spot, even in ancient times. It offers 193 wet berths and many facilities. It is also possible to drop anchor in the Ploče city harbor. Whichever part of the far south of Croatia you direct your bow at, you will be on a journey that brings about priceless experiences. Just listen to the wind and the sea, follow your intuition (but have a compass at hand), and don't forget to follow the legendary lights that will never let you down. We wish you calm seas. 

At first, life at a lighthouse sounds romantic for many people, but it is also at the same time dramatic, lonely, and unpredictable because, at the end of the day, it is surrounded by the unpredictable sea. During the warmer part of the year, it is most often tame, calm, and mild towards those that sail it or live near it, while in the winter it can also show its merciless side. And then, there is no compromise. It can be said that the sea shapes the lives of lighthouse keepers and their families. The few left standing (since the profession of lighthouse keeping is, unfortunately, slowly dying out) on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea live in sturdy stone buildings built by the AustroHungarian Empire that still ward off the weather. In order to make sure that those impressive buildings are not forgotten, along with the lighthouse keeping profession and the noble light that is a "beacon of rescue, hope, and safety", especially in stormy nights, a group of enthusiasts from the "Lux Mediterraneum" Friends of the Mediterranean Association, fascinated by the phenomenon of Adriatic lighthouses and life on them, have sailed as far as the lighthouses in the far south of Croatia and spoken to the lighthouse keepers. They have taken the story of the construction of the lighthouses and the experience of living on them, along with artistic photos and statements from the lighthouse keepers, and put them together in a 320-page memoir "Legends of the Light". The memoir was written by Jurica Gašpar, who also experienced the joys of living in a lighthouse. In the book, discover stories and secrets that have never been told before. To be more precise, they are only known to the lighthouse keepers and their families, colleagues, or those who have come over and had the chance to be a guest at the lighthouse. 

he trails of Krka National Park offer a way to truly experience nature, rugged karst, and life-giving water, contrasts that come together into a harmonious entity that will make every visitor stop, take a deep breath, open their eyes and soul, and experience the world around them with all their senses. Alongside the 29 kilometers of marked walking trails, fans of outdoor activities can enjoy themselves on the 470 kilometers of bike trails that pass through Krka National Park. There are a total of 14 bike trails in the park, five of which are mountain bike trails, three are road trails, and six are track trails for pleasant family rides. The longest is the so-called royal route, a 95.1 km long trail that starts in front of the NP Krka Public Institution building in Skradin, runs through the towns of Rupe and Kistanje, and ends in Burnum (a Roman military amphitheater). Upon returning to Skradin, it drops down to the Krka River basin twice (at the

Brljan and Roški waterfalls), and after Laškovica it leads back to Skradin on the same route. The shortest cycling trail, 8.6 km long, runs alongside the Krka from Skradin up to Skradinski buk, the most beautiful and most-visited waterfall on the Krka River. Signs are posted alongside the trails, and there are also maps available with detailed descriptions, photos, maps, and the GPS coordinates of the routes. The newly renovated information center in Laškovica, above Roški slap, is the starting point for active ways of visiting the central flow of the Krka, along with for riding the cycling trails. There you can get all the information you need about the Park, buy tickets, or just rest for a while. Krka National Park, as an area of incredible natural beauty and cultural and historical heritage, and as part of the Natura 2000 region that positions Croatia amongst the most protected areas in Europe, is the ideal place for an active holiday in nature. what it is trying to offer to its visitors, especially on the upper and central flow of the Krka River, which, thanks to layout of its terrain and the natural phenomena that surrounds it, offers many possibilities for organized sports. While cycling along every bike trail, you will discover spectacular views of the river and breathtaking viewpoints that will make you think about the strength of nature and the importance of its preservation. Along with the adrenaline rush they get from riding down steep

slopes, or the calming feeling they get while driving through tame valleys, while pedaling down the trails of Krka National Park fans of cycling will get direct insight into the abundant flora and fauna of the habitats, both in water and on land. When the Krka adorns its autumn coat, and October brings an abundance of water that fill the waterfalls with their plentiful autumn bounty, it is the ideal time to cycle down the bike trails of Krka National Park. 

Krka Trophy is the name of the bike race that will take place in the Šibenik-Knin County in late September of 2018. On September 30, cyclists will head out from Drniš to conquer Promina, which offers a magnificent view of Krka National Park. Depending on their level of physical fitness, recreational cyclists and athletes will be able to choose from four different trails, 25, 40, or 70 kilometers long, or the All Mountain trails, which are ideal for those looking for an adrenaline rush. The legendary Jabuka Regatta (November 9-11) takes sailors on a 110 mile-long journey from Vodice to Jabuka, the most distant Croatian island, and back to Vodice. It will be a long and exhausting journey, which is why this race is just a challenge for true sea dogs. 

Don't give up on swimming in the sea in Vodice in the fall. As part of the renovated Male Vrulje beach, there is an enclosed lagoon with a pool, where the sea temperature is up to ten degrees higher than in the surrounding sea, so you can enjoy the sea up until late autumn.

The most famous wine in Kvarner is Vrbnička Žlahtina. It is a superb, dry white wine with gentle notes of citrus and green apple made with the indigenous sort of white žlahtina grapes, which are grown around the town of Vrbnik on the island of Krk. Žlahtina grapes are also grown in the vineyards in the hinterland of the coastal town of Novi Vinodolski, across from Vrbnik. Valomet sparkling wine is made using Vrbnička Žlahtina and a modern and exclusive fermentation process under the sea. The bottle decorated with seashells and corals is the ideal gift or souvenir.

At the Crikvenica-Vinodol Riviera, you will also come across authentic flavors that you will recall long after you have returned home. Try batuda (a thick vegetable soup), crkveniške rupice zelenjavun (sardines with Swiss chard, kale, red cabbage, and potatoes), and oily fish marinade, and then treat yourself to the richly flavored Frankopan cake, or the Pavlinska cake. You will also be delighted with fig schnapps and wine from the Vinodol region. While in restaurants on the island of Cres, treat yourself to a perfect delicacy - Cres lamb. Due to their grazing of aromatic Mediterranean grasses, Cres lamb has a unique flavor. While on Cres, try the fantastic sheep's milk cheese and curd, fish dishes, and aromatic olive oil. Similar delicacies will also enchant you on the neighboring island of Krk. There you can also enjoy sheep's milk cheese and prosciutto, fish dishes and delicious shrimp, along with lamb zgvačet (goulash), which the locals serve with handmade pasta called šurlice. Complement your enjoyment with a glass of light white Vrbnička Žlahtina wine. The island of Lošinj, which is also known as the Island of Vitality due to its lush Mediterranean vegetation and therapeutic climate, will offer you an abundance of tasty dishes seasoned with wild herbs. ambiance of Lošinj's restaurants try some authentic local dishes, such as zaladija (jellied fish), udic (dried mutton), or kalandrka (goulash with potatoes). The people of Lošinj will also offer you liqueur and marmalades made from oranges and lemons grown on the island, and additionally sweeten up your day with the island's famous desert - almond croquant. If you decide to visit the island of Rab, enjoy the unique flavors of Rab: dried octopus with eggs, salted anchovies with tomatoes, capers, and onions, grilled scorpionfish, barbatska štufada (lamb with honey)... and round off your feast with Rabska torta. Its original recipe has been a carefully guarded secret for more than 835 years, and its preparation takes three days. It will delight you with its fantastic aroma of almonds, aromatic lemons, and homemade maraschino. Just a half-hour drive away from the sea, try something completely different - specialties from Gorski kotar. That forested mountainous region will captivate you with its nature, but also with its rustic dishes. Try dishes made with game and wild mushrooms, frog's legs, snails, dormice, grilled trout, škripavac cheese made with cow's milk, and the unavoidable Gorski spread (boiled pig's stomach stuffed with eggs, ham, bacon, bread, and onions). While there, raise a glass of brinjevac, traditional schnapps made with spruce. 

he streets of Zagreb's Upper Town hide a mysterious past. In the past, in dark corners of streets and at the moonlit Manduševac well (on the main city square), witches used to cast spells on innocent fellow citizens. Zagreb's witches (known as coprnice) aren't just a figment of Croatian writer Marija Jurić Zagorka's imagination, but also the title that several hundred women, who were often innocent herbalists, midwives, and maiden women, bore from the 15th to the 18th century, as the superstitious citizens unjustly accused them of impossible crimes. The old citizens of Zagreb considered bad weather, hunger, disease, marriages without children, and even business deals gone wrong to be consequences of witchery. Women worried their husbands would be seduced by coprnice, farmers thought their spells would cause drought, and tradesmen thought coprnice would steal their customers. The accused women underwent unimaginable torture before they admitted their crimes, and their tragic fate ended when they were burnt in the Tuškanac park forest, near the main square. hen autumn arrives in the green ring surrounding the Croatian capital and it awards the locals with a delicious and abundant harvest, it is the best possible invitation you can get to visit that tame area. During all of September, Dugo Selo will be in the sign of Dugo Selo Autumn and the old-fashioned dishes from that area, so there you will find, amongst other things, the fish festival, the bike festival, the grape harvest, and delicious homemade delicacies. Slightly different musical treats can be found in Samobor, the host of the 43rd Samobor Autumn Music Festival (September 22-30), one of the most renowned festivals of classical music in Croatia. Fantastic concerts performed by superb artists are part of that festival, the bearer of the prestigious EFFE title awarded by the European Festivals Association. hen looking for a place for true relaxation, you need not look further than the BjelovarBilogora region. When the tame hills and picturesque valleys in the area turn shades of yellow and gold in the autumn, the backdrop for a fairytale holiday is created. Relaxing nature, vineyards that stretch as far as eye can see, and family farms whose hospitable hosts can't wait to share their priceless treasures with you are reason enough to head to that part of the Croatian interior this autumn. Authentic Bilogora dishes are amongst the main features of the area. Beech forests in the national parks of Northern Velebit and Paklenica

The natural beauty and biodiversity of Croatia continues to be recognized worldwide, so in 2017, UNESCO added the beech forests of the Northern Velebit and Paklenica National Parks to its prestigious list of world heritage sites. Croatia is inscribed as an extension on the list of the nomination for "Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and other Regions of Europe", with nine other European countries: Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Italy, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, and the Ukraine. The extension included 63 areas with beech forests, three of which are in the mentioned Croatian national parks. They include 1289 hectares of beech forests located in Northern Velebit National Park in the protected "Hajdučki and Rožanski kukovi" reserve, and 2031 hectares of forestland at the "Suva draga - Klimenta" and "Oglavinovac - Javornik" sites in Paklenica National Park. Besides being indigenous, the forests are also special for their geographical position, age, and the incredible quality of the forest ecosystem. Yet another reason to head out and explore those natural treasures of Croatia!

The International Tourism Film Festival will be held in the Kaptol Boutique Cinema in Zagreb from October 10 to 12, 2018. A total of 807 films from 91 countries worldwide were submitted for this year's festival, including about forty films that arrived from Croatia. During the festival, travel buffs will be able to enjoy free screenings of films in five categories. The selected films cover various topics - from promoting travel destinations, adventurism, extreme sports, nautical topics, hotels, and various cultures and traditions, all the way to religious and rural tourism.

The Crikvenica International Health Tourism Conference (CIHT) will be held on November 8 and 9, 2018 in Crikvenica. More than 18 international speakers, two workshops, and visits to clinics are just part of this year's program.

By 2021, the Cave House, the Barać Caves Public Institution's unique and attractive visitor center, should be completed in Rakovica, near the world-famous Plitvice Lakes. The center will be built underground and it will include, amongst other things, a presentation and museum portion, a speleologicaleducational center with a library, a polyvalent multimedia hall, a café and restaurant, children's playrooms, a souvenir shop, and an exterior with presentation points. Nearly 20 million kuna were awarded by the European Cohesion Fund for the construction of the center.

After great success in Crikvenica, in mid-July 2018, Monty's Dog Beach & Bar, which offers a specialized menu for dog owners and their pets, opened on Artić Beach in the settlement of Banjol on Rab Island. They have had many songs, concerts, events, and emotions, met many people, and that which still keeps them going is their love for music, along with the passion and the joy they feel while getting on stage. n the first half of this year, you went on tour in Australia and New Zealand, the USA, and Canada. How long has it been since you had your last concerts in those distant destinations? Where were you awaited by the largest audience? Yes, this year started off with an Australian tour, and continued with an American and Canadian tour, and concerts in many European cities (London, Frankfurt, Pforzheim,

Munich, and Wuppertal). More than 20 years have passed since our last visit to Australia, so those concerts (in Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Sydney) were a chance to recall the atmosphere from the previous tours, but also to get to know a new audience. We have visited Canada and the US often, so we already feel at home there. This tour took us to Toronto, Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Calgary, and Vancouver. We all had a fantastic time,

and we were well-received by the audience. The most massive audience was in Melbourne, so we held two concerts there, and Toronto was the biggest concert on the CanadianAmerican tour. It must be an indescribably good feeling to know that you have an audience all over the world. Did you imagine it would be like that when you started your musical journey? A full 40 years have passed since Prljavo kazalište headed out on a long journey that still continues today, and we hope it won't end any time soon. At that time, no one could have known where the band was going and where our songs would take us. Now, when we look back and reminisce,

we are joyful, happy, and proud of everything that happened with the band, and around it, which often surpassed even our greatest dreams.

You never miss the chance to emphasize your love for your Dubrava. Your connection to that neighborhood in Zagreb is always felt. Dubrava is also a common motif in our songs. It is the neighborhood Prljavo kazalište came from, and it is only natural that there is a special connection between people and the part of town they live in. Over the years, we have watched the neighborhood change and grow.

The band celebrated its 40th birthday with a big concert with which you wished your city, Zagreb, a happy birthday. It was a true spectacle and proof of how much your fellow citizens love you. The final celebration of that great anniversary at the sold-out concert was an emotional, organizational, and technical challenge for the band. It always feels special to perform in your city, because all the stories from tours and great performances, the emotions, and the audience's impulsive delight in faraway cities need to be confirmed at home. The concert at the stadium in Kranjčevićeva confirmed all our hopes and dreams.

Ten cities fighting for the spot of European Capital of Smart Tourism

The first 3D coral printed A missing part of the Berlin Wall found Although the Berlin Wall was taken down in 1989, part of it still stands as a protected monument. One of the forgotten pieces was recently discovered northwest of the center of Berlin thanks to a group of local citizens who recognized that a 20-meter long part of a wall covered in graffiti and shrubbery could be part of the historical border between western and eastern Berlin. The Berlin Wall Foundation confirmed that it truly is a part of the historical wall and immediately protected it as a historical monument.

Brussels, Helsinki, Ljubljana, Lyon, Malaga, Nantes, Palma, Valencia, Poznan, and Tallinn are finalists in the competition for the European Capital of Smart Tourism. The initiative was launched by the European Union (EU) with the goal of promoting smart tourism in the EU and encouraging innovation and the sustainable development of tourism. Achievements are evaluated in four categories: sustainability, accessibility, digitalization, and the cultural heritage and creativity of European cities. The winners will be announced on November 7, 2018 at the celebration of European Tourism Day in Brussels.

In an effort to protect the underwater ecosystem from climate change, scientists have placed a 3D coral in a lagoon on the Maldives from which an entire coral reef should grow along with an entire ecosystem. A total of 220 ceramic molds filled with concrete were used to make the 3D coral, and it was placed at a depth of seven meters. Natural corals were placed on it, which should colonize the entire structure over the next two years. If the project succeeds, 3D corals could become a new way to save endangered coral reefs and to prevent the negative effects of increased temperatures and rising sea levels.

Go to Japan without luggage Explore the secrets of Japan without lugging about suitcases and backpacks. An innovative sharing platform called Locarry eases traveling for tourists by enabling them to borrow clothing, shoes, cameras, and anything they could possibly need while visiting Japan from local citizens. Local providers publish a list of things they are renting out, and after the tourists have chosen what they want to rent, they meet up with the provider at a set location where they receive the goods and pay for what they rented. The platform is free, and for now, it is available in Japan, the USA, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

The second Global Tourism Summit, organized by the Hawaiian tourist board, will take place on Hawaii from October 1 to 3, 2018. Representatives of the local and international travel industry will discuss new trends and innovative practices in the travel industry and the importance of the sustainable development of tourism on Hawaii and in other destinations. There will also be discussions on the history and heritage of Hawaii, and their role in creating a unique experience that the islands offer their guests.

Research conducted this year by various travel associations, agencies, and websites for reserving accommodations, such as ATTA, Booking.com, and Intrepid Travel, show an increase in popularity in trips that tourists go on alone. Solo traveling is popular amongst representatives of all generations, and due to fear of security and stress caused by planning trips, they often contact travel agencies while looking for travel arrangements. Avoiding being charged additional costs and organizing various events and tours adapted to the needs and safety of solo tourists are amongst the best ways of attracting satisfied solo tourists.

World Tourism Day is celebrated September 27, and this year, Budapest is hosting the official celebration. The main topics will be the importance of digital technology in tourism, creating opportunities for innovation, and preparing the tourism sector for the future. The celebration is being organized by representatives of the World Tourism Organization, who are convinced that digital advancement is the key ingredient to creating sustainable tourism. Budapest was chosen as the host since tourism has been growing there thanks to digital technology. It is expected that the announcement of the semi-finalists of the first UNWTO Tourism Startup competition, which places focus on innovative ideas aimed at changing ways of traveling, will be announced at the celebration.

Applications for the 15th UNWTO awards open Applications are open for the World Tourism Organization's (UNWTO) award for the public sector, companies, and non-government organizations until October 31, 2018. Their goal is to recognize the contribution of public and private institutions and non-government organizations at the local, national, regional, and international level, which contributes to the development of a competitive, responsible, and sustainable tourism sector. The finalists will be announced in December 2018, and the winners will be announced in January 2019. There aren't many destinations around the world that are changing as quickly as Cuba is. Although it doesn't necessarily mean that its authenticity will disappear with the changes, it's best to head over to that island nation as soon as possible. Take a picture of photogenic Cuba, and its capital Havana, in the way that we all imagine it to be - with fascinating (and often dilapidated) colonial architecture, colorful old-timers on the streets, women in traditional costume with cigars in their mouths... The most attractive part of the city is definitely lively Old Havana (La Habana Vieja), which has been protected by UNESCO. Romantic Santorini No one can resist picturesque Santorini. The contrast of the blue and white town on black volcanic rocks on the most popular Greek island instantly delights people at first sight, and when you take a walk through the narrow streets of its villages, you will be so far away from reality that you will feel as if you are an extra in a film. Although all the island settlements are built in the same or similar style, Oia is known as the most beautiful island settlement, not only on the island, but in the world. There where the east meets the west, the past the future, and your camera meets magnificent buildings... you will find Istanbul. The Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Suleiman's Mosque, Topkapi Palace, the Galata Tower, the Maiden's Tower... there are many incredible buildings that rightfully place Istanbul on the list of the most photogenic destinations in the world. If we add the opulence of the Grand Bazaar (Kapali Carsi), one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, and the colorful Egyptian Bazaar with many spices, teas, and sweets in the most diverse colors, it is clear that photographers will have plenty to do there. Exotic French Polynesia Of the many exotic destinations, we have singled out French Polynesia, which world travelers and sailors have unanimously confirmed is heaven on earth. It consists of several groups of coral and volcanic islands immersed in the Pacific Ocean, the most popular ones being Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Mo'orea. Tahiti is the main island, and it is also called the island of love, Bora Bora is known as the most romantic and most exclusive island in the world, while Mo'orea is a calmer, more intimate island with less tourism (and with much lower prices than Bora Bora). Whichever island you head to in French Polynesia, expect to see scenes of pearly-white sandy beaches lined with palm trees and splashed by the turquoise sea, surrounded by coral reefs. Since the archipelago is home to an incredible seabed, it is worth diving in with an underwater camera and eternalizing at least a bit of that exotic world.

The platform was created together by the UNWTO and the Swiss State Secretary for Economic Affairs (SECO), and it was launched during the Political forum (HLPF) dedicated to sustainable development (Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies). The forum was held in New York from July 9 to 18, 2018, and it was hosted by the UNWTO and the One Planet network. 

The largest hottest desert in the world, which grows larger and larger every year, stretches over northern Africa and covers vast areas of ten countries. Logically, one of the greatest tourist attractions there is riding camels through the desert. Although people grow or try to grow it on nearly all continents, Asia is known as the homeland of rice. Together, China, India, and Indonesia produce nearly 2/3 of the total global rice crops, and rice has, more than any other grain, fed many generations. Revenue from international tourism in 2017 reached a record-breaking 1,600 billion US dollars, which is five percent more than the previous year, and such revenue made tourism the third largest export sector in the world - pointed out the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Earlier this year, the same organization published the physical tourism records for 2017, with a total of 1.32 billion foreign tourists who traveled the world beyond the borders of their countries, which is a 7 percent increase in comparison to 2016, and the largest number since 2010. In other words, last year, 84 million more foreign tourists traveled than in 2016, and the regions with the greatest increase were Europe and Africa. The UNWTO says it has also affected an increase in revenue, by five percent to 1,600 billion US dollars. Of that, 1,300 billion is the revenue or income of the destinations all over the world, while more than 240 billion dollars were generated by international passenger transport.
