Welcome to Croatia, a safe destination! During your travel and stay in Croatian destinations, follow the national sign "Safe stay in Croatia", which guarantees that your hosts have put your safety and health first and that they have enabled a pleasant stay in your destination and safe enjoyment of the tourist offer.

T

he campaign for the "Safe stay in Croatia" sign, which guarantees tourists that the highest health and epidemiological standards are being implemented, which is incredibly important during a pandemic, was launched back in February 2021. Look for the visibly displayed sign on restaurants and cafés, at hotels, rental homes, family farms, swimming pools, marinas, on boats, in travel and rental car agencies... The sign is actually a national update to the "Safe Travels" sign that was created by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) in order to easily identify destinations and companies that abide by globally standardized protocols for health and hygiene.

A regional Covid map with a depiction of the epidemiological situation in Croatia by county is available here:

Finally... travel :-)

I

t's finally here! Even though we still haven't returned back to the "old normal", at least we've reached a point when things have started to calm down, the epidemiological situation is much better, and the pandemic that has transported us to a new reality over the past year and a half is under control. With a growing number of the general population and travel industry workers immunized, where Croatia has stood out amongst the rest in the Mediterranean, and with safety protocols implemented in many countries all around the world, we have finally reached the time when we can travel, which brings along the long-awaited feeling of freedom and upswing, new impressions and experiences, relaxation, and satisfaction. However, since the pandemic still isn't over, we are all still carefully thinking about where to travel and what kind of accommodations to

choose, something private, far away from crowds, and, if possible, in touch with nature. The dilemma that many share was our motivation to research and prepare a topic on the most sought-after kinds of accommodations during the pandemic, for which it is assumed will remain trendy in the upcoming years. Feel the joy of sailing and dropping anchor in blue lagoons, experience a stay in a lighthouse, a holiday in a glamping tent immersed in heavenly surroundings, the luxury offered by a stay in stone villas, far away from the crowds of tourists, the superb comfort of luxury hotels and pleasant apartments where your safety comes first. You can find all that in Croatia - a safe destination for a carefree holiday full of experiences. Read more about what attracts you most here, experience it this year, and share your impressions with us :-) Željka and Robert Kunštek

Sailboat or yacht

Full sails into countless shades of blue Anyone who has ever even once in their life experienced the charm of sailing, felt the gentle maestral wind in their hair and the aroma of the open sea, listened to the waves crashing against the bow, and sailed into blue lagoons that they had all to themselves, will never even think of any other kind of vacation. Not only is it safe and takes you away from civilization (except perhaps in the evening hours if you decide to dock in a marina), but sailing also recharges you, while also offering you the peace and quiet you desperately need to relax your body and soul. Spending all day in the fresh sea air, the abundant dose of Vitamin D that you'll get on the sunny deck will benefit your health along with swimming in the clean sea, and the possibility of sailing into different coves daily gives that kind of holiday a special dynamic. Imagine how many coves there are in Croatia, a land with 1244 islands, islets, and reefs from the north to the south Adriatic! So, gather your crew of family or friends, pick a boat and a departure point, and head out on a thousand-island journey.

Camper, mobile home, or glamping tent

Camping is "in"

.......................................

Camper, glamping tent, camp, or mobile home? It really doesn't matter. Whatever you choose, you will be immersed in nature, in the shade of olive trees, Mediterranean pines, palms, oleanders, and other Mediterranean or continental plants, depending on the location you choose. Although most camps are located on the coast of the Adriatic Sea and on islands, right next to the sea, Croatian destinations in the interior also have fantastic camps. You will find some next to rivers, some next to Nature Parks and National Parks, some amongst tame hills, and some near important roads. Many offer plenty of options for sports, entertainment, and children, gastronomic delights in restaurants and bars, and all of them offer direct contact with nature and the sense of freedom and return to nature.

Private villas

Luxury in nature The age of the pandemic also brought around some new trends. In contrast to classic apartments, where most guests who visit Croatia traditionally stay, in 2020, demand was highest for luxurious villas in remote locations. Such houses, immersed in nature and hidden from view, offer not only privacy but also plenty of content for long-term stays, such as pools, jacuzzis, fire pits, etc. Some also have saunas, gyms, tennis courts, a boat dock, mini-golf course, bicycles... The trend in high demand for luxurious villas has also continued in 2021, and it is predicted that it will continue to grow in the next few years. You can find such villas along the entire Adriatic coast - from Istria and Kvarner to southern Dalmatia. Still, if you'd like to experience a bit of hustle and bustle from time to time during your stay, grab a bike, scooter, car or take a walk - in just a few minutes you'll be in the center of one of the nearby travel destinations.

If you'd like to escape from the crowds and the thought of reality and viruses, while also experiencing an entirely different dimension of a vacation and spending it in complete peace and quiet, which is only occasionally disturbed by the sound of waves crashing into rocks and seagulls calling, a lighthouse will fulfill your expectations. Faraway and isolated, located on remote islets, reefs, and points, while also mystical and romantic... That's what Adriatic lighthouses are. They will very quickly get you back to the sea, nature, peace, and quiet that we have all been distant from recently, while also offering you comfort. Once you try staying at a lighthouse, you will likely conclude that other kinds of accommodations will have a difficult time beating out the unique experience of staying in "the stone guardians of the Adriatic".

Hotels

Look for the sign "Safe stay in Croatia" If you prefer the comfort and luxury that superb hotels offer and you wouldn't like to give up that feeling during your next holiday, look for hotels with the "Safe stay in Croatia" sign. The national sign of safety protocol in tourism and hospitality guarantees that the hotel follows all recommended epidemiological measures and recommendations from the World Travel & Tourism Council, as well as the Croatian Institute for Public Health. Along with national safety protocol, many hotel companies have also created additional health and safety programs in their buildings to offer you a vacation that is as safe and carefree as possible. Amongst other things, such programs include the organization of health care services and online medical consultations 24/7, as well as organizing BAT (fast ANTIGEN) and PCR testing in the hotel. All you have to do is choose the destination and the hotel you want and enjoy your holiday in a carefree way.

If you decide to try it out on one of the Elaphite Islands, which used to belong to Dubrovnik's aristocracy, such as Šipan or Lopud, riding through untouched nature will take you alongside many palaces and old summer estates. The island of Korčula is also bike-friendly, and it will reveal beautiful views and attractions, just like Odyssey's island, Mljet, which has gravel country trails that are ideal for riding mountain bikes, while the paved roads are perfect for panoramic family rides. With its low level of traffic, the paved roads on the island of Lastovo are great for a pleasant ride, while those looking for a more dynamic ride can choose from one of the many forest trails. There are also excellent cycling trails throughout Konavle, and they will take you alongside orchards and vineyards. Over the past few years, the Ćiro cycling path, which passes along the route of an old narrow-gauge railway, has grown in popularity. The Pelješac peninsula, whose locals have recently prepared an interactive map with five mountain biking circuit trails, also offers a lot of possibilities for road and mountain biking. Believe us when we say that every drop of sweat will be more than worth it! A relaxing ride through the fertile Neretva Valley or the trail next to Baćina Lakes will offer completely different scenery and views. Cycling down Napoleon's old road in the Dubrovnik Riviera in the early evening hours will reward you with an enchanting sunset and a view of the Elaphite Islands and the town of Slano.

Water sports: One sea, many possibilities If you visit southern Croatia in the summer, seek refreshment from the heat in an activity connected to the sea. Sailing is always a great choice, especially when you have hundreds of enchanting and safe coves and turquoise lagoons at your disposal, which you can easily reach with the help of the refreshing maestral winds that will fill your sails. All you have to do is make sure you have great company on board. Those looking for an adrenaline rush and wind in their hair can try windsurfing at one of the best destinations in the world for that activity. Viganj and Kučište are towns on the Pelješac peninsula where wind constantly blows and allows windsurfers to enjoy themselves all year long. There, windsurfing is much more than a sport - it has become a way of life. Come and see for yourself. In the summer months, you can also enjoy that activity in Brna Cove on the island of Korčula, where, just like in Viganj, you can enroll in a windsurfing school and rent all the equipment you need. Fans of kitesurfing will also find their oasis in southern Croatia, at the very place where the Neretva River meets the Adriatic Sea. Divers can also expect to find a real treat. The undersea world there is rich in incredible diving sites, underwater walls, underwater caves, rich in flora and fauna, but also ancient sites. One of the largest and most attractive in the Adriatic is the site near Cavtat's islets of Mrkan, Bobara, and Supetar. The waters around the islands of Mljet and Lastovo are also home to many amphora sites. Kayaking and canoeing are other attractive ways of exploring the coast and islands and they can be rented in many places. It's especially popular to rent them to row along the Veliko and Malo jezero (Large and Small Lakes) on the island of Mljet. In recent years, stand-up paddleboarding has gained popularity, and not only can you row a SUP in the sea, but also in lakes, such as the Baćina Lakes. Fishermen can also find something for themselves in the DubrovnikNeretva area, along with those who would just like to swim in the sea or lounge next to it in a hidden cove or on pretty beaches. Stone, pebble, sandy... there are beaches to suit everyone's taste. You'll have to find your favorite on your own because that's something we can't do for you. The selection is simply too vast.

There are many other options for releasing adrenaline and endorphins (the hormone of happiness). While in Konavle, try your hand at recreational horseback riding and get to know more about the interesting area located near UNESCO's internationally famous gem, Dubrovnik, with guided halfday equestrian tours. You can also tour Konavle, along with other destinations in southern Croatia with an adrenaline ride on a quad, buggy, or as part of an ATV safari. You can experience a much calmer ride, in a traditional Neretva lađa boat, in a photo safari in the arms and lakes of the Neretva River. Listen to the songs of the many birds that live there, the croaking of the frogs, and the other sounds of the marshland area. Finally, treat yourself to some of the juicy fruit that grows abundantly there, which the locals cool in the Neretva River next to their fields on hot summer days right after picking them, and offer it chilled to their guests. If you plan on staying in the Neretva Valley during October and November, head out with the locals to pick the delicious Mandarin oranges that the area is especially famous for, and try your hand at harvesting olives. SUPing is a great experience in the Neretva or on the Baćina Lakes, where you can also sign up for a SUP school and head out on an attractive SUP excursion through incredibly beautiful nature.

Active excursions: All in one If you'd like to combine several activities and experience the best of each, let the locals help you organize them. After all, they know their area the best, they have plenty of useful information and advice and certainly know the best places for fantastic experiences. Nowadays, many travel agencies in the Dubrovnik-Neretva area offer active excursions that combine several activities in various locations, such as cycling, kayaking, hiking, and sailing, or swimming, diving, and SUPing. Some excursions combine activities in the sea, on lakes, and rivers, with a fish picnic included, while others will offer you the experience of kayaking or horseback riding at sunset. After your active excursion, you will surely be hungry so the locals will take you on a gourmet journey through the local taverns and restaurants. Depending on the destination you choose for your vacation in southern Croatia, try typical fish and seafood dishes, with the unavoidable superb olive oil, Ston oysters, or Neretva specialties - brodetto made with eel or frogs, Konavle green menestra, and the best-known appetizer - prosciutto, cheese, and olives. Depending on the dish, the meal will be enhanced with drops of fantastic wine from Pelješac - Dingač and Postup, followed by Dubrovačka Malvazija, or great wines from the island of Korčula made from autochthonous sorts - Grk, Pošip, and Rukatac (Maraština).

A heavenly path - Skywalk Biokovo One of the most attractive excursions you can go on during your stay at the Makarska Riviera is to the Biokovo Nature Park. That park of impressive natural beauty has been enhanced even more as of the summer of 2020 with a unique attraction - a heavenly path - Skywalk Biokovo, from which you'll have a view of the riviera and the surrounding islands immersed in the blue sea at the palm of your hand. The viewpoint is located on the edge of a cliff, above a drop, at an altitude of 1228 meters above sea level and built in the shape of a horseshoe. While walking on the glass walkway, you'll feel as if you're walking in the sky, while the magnificent view takes your breath away and uses up the memory on your phone or camera. A total of 30 visitors can be on the skywalk at once, and it is open from 8 AM to 8 PM, depending on weather conditions. Entrance to the park at the reception is permitted until 7 PM. 

Baška Voda, the well of life N

early two hundred years ago, Dr. Frari from Venice wrote that in Baška Voda "... even a dying man comes alive!". His arguments were rooted in the healing combination of clean sea and mountain air above the abundance of Mediterranean vegetation and water springs that the place got its name for. The same factors attract families with children to Baška Voda, along with other tourists, including people with respiratory issues, as well as recreational and professional athletes. Many films and shows for children and youth were filmed on site there, including "Game of Thrones". Touring the underwater world freely, having fun or just relaxing in the crystal clear sea and on the pearly white beaches, considered to be amongst the top ten most attractive in the Mediterranean (Daily Mail), walking along the stone promenade decorated with palm trees and flowers, or romantic walks on the beach, strolling along trails amongst olive groves, vineyards and pine forests, professionally guided excursions on hiking trails and to the Skywalk in Biokovo Nature Park, healthy Dalmatian food, all enhanced by the hospitality of the locals in cozy family accommodations or superb hotels - all guarantee an unforgettable vacation. Fill your lungs with life and find out why Baška Voda has received so many tourism awards and why it was named 2020 champion of Večernji list's "Travel Patrol", which rates Croatian travel destinations. 

n Sinj, a town located just thirty kilometers from the popular travel destination of Split, you will find a holiday like you've been wanting for a while, with an ideal balance of peace and adrenaline, culture and tradition, with irresistible colors, flavors and aromas, surrounded by mountains, fertile fields and the sea. In order to best experience Sinj, first research its famous past. The Museum of Cetinska Krajina, Archeological Collection of the Franciscan monastery, and the interactive Museum of the Sinj Alka, where you will walk into the world of alkar-knights and knights' tournaments, will take you on that journey. However, you need not just imagine knights and knights' tournaments. Every first Sunday in August history comes alive in Sinj - in the form of the Sinj Alka. It has taken place for more than 300 years. In holding the knights' tournament, protected by UNESCO, the proud locals have nurtured the memory of the important battle against the Ottomans in 1715 and they express their gratitude to the Miraculous

Lady of Sinj, who, according to legend, saved the city and became its eternal protector saint. Every year on August 15th, on the Day of the Assumption of Our Lady, the people of Sinj, along with many pilgrims from all over Croatia and the world, walk down the Our Lady of Sinj Route. Sinj will also entice you to be active in its enchanting nature. Head down one of its walking, hiking, cycling or equestrian trails. Gather your courage and head down the Cetina River in a kayak or canoe, or row along the Peruća Lake. Enjoy an exciting ride on quads, buggies and jeep safaris through untouched nature. To see Sinj from the sky, go paragliding, parachuting, or gliding. The selection is also abundant at the table in Sinj. Sinjski arambaši, frogs, crayfish, Cetina trout, Sinj rafioli and donuts (uštipci)... Sinj's rich history brought about unique flavors that successfully blend the spirit of the Mediterranean, east and continental regions. They are flavors you will always go back to. 

ebbly, sandy, concrete... with a blue flag, children's playground, waterslide, aqua park, and trampoline, with the option of going parasailing, renting a kayak, pedal boat, water scooter, SUP board, with a beach volleyball court... Next to pine forests, olive groves, and Mediterranean herbs... The selection of beaches Vodice offers is truly vast and everyone, including your four-legged friend, will very easily find something to suit them. However, when you get tired of swimming in the clean sea, water sports, and laying around on the beach, grab a bike. The kilometers of diverse and well-marked trails that meander through those favorite Dalmatian destinations will whet the appetite of both recreational cyclists, who will head out on the easier trails, as well as avid cyclists who will be challenged by the red slopes and demanding inclines. Before you go for a ride, stop by the tourist information center to pick up a map.

In the footsteps of a great inventor Starting this year, a true hit are stimulating excursions inspired by a world-famous inventor, Faust Vrančić. You might not know him by name, but you definitely know of his inventions, such as the parachute, bridges, olive mills, grape presses, the sundial... Yes, Faust designed all of them, and to teach you more about his inventions, homeland, lifestyle, and the time he lived in, locals have organized several excursions that will take you away from the daily grind for a few hours. One of the most popular ones is "Sail through Faust's land". Board an excursion boat and sail to the area where the famous visionary found inspiration for his achievements. While sailing, you can enjoy the view of Šibenik and UNESCO's monuments (the St. James Cathedral and St. Nikola Fortress), you'll stop by to get some fresh mussels from the local farm that your hosts will prepare a la buzara, according to a traditional recipe, and serve on the boat, after which you will sail towards the island of Prvić. It was there that Faust often spent his time in his childhood, and today on the island you can find the "Faust Vrančić"

Even though it's famous for being colorful, Morocco is also home to a blue gem called Chefchaouen. The town in northwestern Morocco is a delightful place with typical Spanish and Moorish architecture where its trademark is - the color blue in all its shades. Heaven for the eyes, heaven for photographers, heaven for romantics. According to the Jewish faith, blue is the color that symbolizes the sky and heaven, so legend says that painting the houses, walls, facades, windows and streets blue was first done by Jewish refugees. Others claim the city was painted blue to repel mosquitos. Besides being called the "blue city", Chefchaouen is also called the Holy City due to its rich historical and religious heritage. Today it’s a charming travel destination rich in galleries, souvenir shops with unique crafts and colorful fabrics, lively markets, restaurants, and bars.

Setenil de las Bodegas: Life under the rocks Around three thousand inhabitants of the white Andalusian town of Setenil de las Bodegas, in warm southern Spain, decided to spend their lives - under the rocks. The houses in that town, located in a narrow river gorge, are literally shaped into, next to, or under ancient rocks with natural caves that proved to be perfect dwellings - they offer the inhabitants shade in hot summer days and warmth in the winter. The tourist town is also a known and favorite destination amongst many gourmets since many fantastic restaurants and bars at the very top of Europe's gourmet scene are tucked away under the rocks. With their intoxicating flavors, the olive oil, honey, jams, and Andalusian wine there win over even the most discerning taste buds.

Imagine life without jealous neighbors or comments on who has the prettier, bigger, or better decorated house or apartment, where everyone lives in the same humble three or four-bedroom apartments and feels like a big family. No, that's no joke, but actual reality - in Alaska. The city of Whittier can be

reached through a tunnel, by train or car, and its inhabitants have everything they need under one roof of the 14-story Begich Towers - a school, post office, church, store, doctor's office, restaurant, gym, laundromat, police station, business and town offices, and even accommodations for curious tourists. The locals find it practical to have everything under one roof, especially in the long, cold, snowy winter months. Every year around seven meters of snow falls, and the icy winds are a daily occurrence at that time. During those great snowfalls, the inhabitants often spend weeks at a time without leaving the building.

On the other side of the world, in South Australia, is the town of Coober Pedy, famous for two things - it's the world capital of opal, since it's home to the largest mine of the precious mineral in the world, and its other attraction is living underground. There, in the middle of the desert, in an area that is reminiscent of a moonscape, houses, churches, stores, and even 4-star hotels have been built underground, primarily due to the extreme weather conditions (extremely hot summers and cold winters). It's a true delight to enter a world that is somewhat reminiscent of the cartoon world of the Flintstones, and explore the underground maze of the unusual city that has, understandably so, attracted international film production. So, along with the mine, museum and other attractions, it's also worth taking the time to tour the filming locations where the popular movies Mad Max, Red Planet, Pitch Black, Queen of the Desert were filmed.

Longyearbyen: A town where it's illegal to die

and remain intact, which also preserves any potential viruses or illnesses the deceased may have had. On the other hand, preserved bodies become attractive to the wild animals that live there, such as polar bears. So, elderly and ill inhabitants nearing their demise are transported to other parts of Norway, where they spend the last of their days, and later their urns can be placed in the cemetery in Longyearbyen. If someone happens to die in town, the body of the deceased is sent to another part of Norway by boat or plane. Life in the north offers many other interesting things. Traditionally, the sun sets in late October and isn't seen again for the next four months. During polar nights, Longyearbyen becomes one of the favorite destinations for those trying to catch polar lights (Aurora Borealis) along with all those who want to experience that heavenly show of colors.

The headline got you, didn't it? Me too, so I went to research what lies behind it. The town in question is Longyearbyen, a Norwegian town on Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago, north of the Arctic Circle, about halfway between the Norwegian mainland and the North Pole. Around two thousand people, members of 50 various nationalities, live in the northernmost permanently inhabited town in the world, where, according to local laws, no one is officially allowed to die in the town since burials have been forbidden there by law since 1950. The reason for that is the fact that due to the extremely cold Arctic climate, bodies do not decompose underground

Mont-Saint-Michel "Mont-Saint-Michel is to France what the pyramids are to Egypt", wrote Victor Hugo, a famous French novelist and poet long ago about one of the greatest tourist attractions in France, protected by UNESCO since 1979. It's hard to say whether enchanting Mont-Saint-Michel (St. Michael's Mountain) is an island, peninsula, castle, fortress, or monastery. Some will say it's all in one. The fact is that it's a fortified medieval city that developed around the St. Michael monastery on a 20 million-year-old granite rock, and it's located in the historical area of Normandy on the shores of the English Channel. Besides being stunning for its impressive appearance and rich history, the special feature of this area is its extreme contrast between high and low tides. The largest difference in sea level at high and low tide in Europe can be seen there, and the difference can sometimes reach 15 meters. During low tides, MontSaint-Michel becomes a peninsula, and if the tide is really low, it becomes a mountain on land. On the other hand, during high tides, this attraction, which attracts around three million tourists per year, becomes an island surrounded by the sea. Impressive, isn't it? 

Antelope Canyon Some of nature's best works of art can be seen in Arizona, the American state famous for its canyons and deserts. Although the magnificent Grand Canyon National Park is known to be its greatest attraction, it's also worth taking the time to explore its other canyons, such as Antelope Canyon, with its interesting rock formations and its globally unique passages and halls that have been shaped by wind and water. Antelope Canyon is the product of millions of years of water erosion. It's located in a Navajo Indian reserve, and their name for Antelope Canyon, "Tse' bighanilini", means "the place where water passes through rocks". Few geological formations in the world are so picturesque, photogenic, and magnificent as Antelope Canyon with its tall wavy walls and rays of light that fall straight down into the canyon's openings, creating a surreal look. The canyon is heaven on earth not only for fans of nature and geology but also for photographers. Still, keep in mind that the rays of light that give the canyon their enchanting appearance aren't always visible, so the summer months are the best time to visit the canyon, or better said, the period from late March to early October. The canyon can only be toured if accompanied by a guide, and you can choose from several different tours. 

TO ck

In order to identify villages all over the world that are dedicated to the promotion and preservation of their cultural heritage, local traditions, their community, and sustainable development, representatives from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) have issued an open call for the best tourist villages in the world. With the vision that tourism becomes a positive force for transformation, rural development, and the benefit of the community, the initiative hopes to decrease regional inequality and stop the depopulation of rural areas. Also, the goal is to promote the role of tourism in the protection of rural villages together with their landscapes, biological and cultural diversity, local values, and activities, including gastronomy. Applications will be accepted until July 31, 2021, and the chosen villages will be announced in October 2021 at the 24th General Assembly of the UNWTO in Marrakesh (Morocco).
