MEANINGFUL MEALTIMES

Many of us took part in family meals growing up. We worked together to plan, prepare, create and clean up. We may have selected a recipe to make together. We may have voted on where to order takeout. We may have chosen to go out and enjoy a meal at a local eatery. Whatever we chose, there was a sense of ritual to a shared meal and the understanding that core needs of ours would be fulfilled.

When we are focused on the simple act of feeding ourselves, we naturally set aside time to be together. What we may not realize, or appreciate at the time, is how we are fueled emotionally by connecting with each other. Through the building of relationships, the brain releases oxytocin, a powerful neurotransmitter responsible for bonding behavior, the creation of group memories and empathy, among other things. It effectively amplifies the positive emotions linked to our social connections and creates a positive feedback loop for these associations. In this way, our relationships sustain and maintain us on many levels.

There is a unique intimacy to sharing a meal with others. Time spent focused on each other bolsters relationships, deepens friendships and cements familial bonds in a way that few other activities can. It is a time to unwind, relax and unplug. A time to connect and enjoy those around you. A safe space to share goals for the future, plans for the present and reflect on the past.

Mealtimes are also an opportunity to process the challenges of the day. A place to release tension and feel validated through the discussion and feedback that naturally occur when we engage directly with one another. We know we will feel seen, heard and valued in our vulnerability with those closest to us who can relate to us. Ultimately, it is a space to turn toward, lean in and attach ourselves to the world around us in a empathetic and caring way.
