Who are we? A small family run business, Chapel Cottage Studio is an Art teaching Studio and Gallery, nestled into the Welsh countryside, just 10 minutes outside Abergavenny and 40 minutes from the M4. We host a wide range of friendly, informal Art classes to suit all abilities.

Jantien Powell our resident artist and tutor founded Chapel Cottage Studio in 2008. Jantien became a professional artist in 2003 and exhibits widely in and around the South Wales area, her work is well known locally and focuses on the faces and places of rural Wales. Evening classes: We hold 2 evening classes here at the Studio, one on a Monday evening and one on a Tuesday evening. Both classes run from 7 - 9 pm and are tutored by Jantien Powell. This year we will also be including 2 classes per term with other tutors to ensure that a good range of techniques and styles are taught (dates and tutors tbc) Each class covers a range of topics including pastels, acrylics, pencil drawing, charcoal and chalk and mixed media. Just choose which evening suits you best.

With the exception of Life Drawing, all places must be booked in advance. Priority will always be given to those booking for the full year.


An Introduction to Oil Painting: In this mini course students will be guided through all of the basic techniques needed to master the art of Oil painting including tips for composition, various painting techniques such as palette knife painting, wet on wet and traditional oil painting as well as methods for colour mixing. Suitable for those who are completely new to the medium as well as those wishing to improve.

Monthly Portraits Club:

This monthly club is an opportunity to meet up in a friendly, informal setting to practise your portraiture. There is no tutor for this club, members are encouraged to share tips and advice to help everyone to learn from each other. You do not need to book this club in advance, just come along and pay on the day. £12 pp per session which includes a portrait model each month. **NEW** Chapel Cottage Studio Competitions: Landscape Competition! Create a landscape painting from a photograph using the medium of your choice. Submit the painting along with the original photograph that inspired it to Chapel Cottage Studio, the winners will be shown as as part of the annual Crickhowell Open Studio’s event. Our panel of judges will select the top 5 entries and there will also be a visitors choice award for the best loved painting. Entry is FREE, all paintings are to be submitted by the 23rd of May 2016. Prizes (tbc) for this competition are kindly donated by the SAA & The Victoria Gallery, Pontnewydd as well as by Chapel Cottage Studio. Please get in touch for more information.

Portrait Competition! We were massively inspired by last years Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the year competition, so much so that we have decided to run our own portrait competition here at the Studio. Open to all entries, we will divide the competition into “Amateur” and “Professional” categories. Our panel of judges will decide on a winner from each category.

Entry is FREE to everyone and the day includes a complimentary home made lunch for all entrants. The winner of each category will have the opportunity to exhibit their portrait in the Oriel Cric gallery in Crickhowell. Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th June 2016

Saturday 12th September - “Nocturne” in oils Tutor: Colin Ross Jack Cost: £45 pp Artists like Whistler and Turner captured the mystery and atmosphere of twilit scenes. In this workshop, students will be taught to choose suitable compositions for nocturnal scenes, and how to create the impression of night time in oil paint. Saturday 26th September - Feathers in Pastel Tutor: Maggie Davies Cost: £45 pp In this step by step workshop, Maggie will guide you through the techniques for creating feather texture using pastels to produce a vibrant painting that is full of depth, life and movement. Suitable for all abilities. Saturday 17th October - Watercolour Landscapes Tutor: Brian Wheeler Cost: £45 pp In this step by step workshop Brian will guide you through the process of composing and painting a landscape painting in watercolour. Ideal for those who are new to the medium as well as those with some experience. Saturday 24th October - Still Life, a fresh approach Tutor: Mick and Thea Arnold Cost: £45 pp One of the many aspects of Still Life, is that it has long been used as a vehicle for improving observation. This workshop will introduce strategies to address this through a series of simple exercises. Different and unusual combinations of materials will be explored for a truly fresh approach to still life. Saturday 31st October - Dandelion Heads in mixed media Tutor: Alison Board Cost: £45 pp Learn a selection of masking out techniques for constructing dynamic images of one of nature's most fragile, yet beautiful seed heads. Saturday 7th November - Expressive Oils Tutor: Feona Ness Cost: £45 pp Drawing inspiration from your own landscape photographs or sketches you will be working “wet on wet” playing with composition, tone and colour, attempting to simplify or abstract the image with reference to artists such as Turner and Rothko. No experience necessary, just enthusiasm!

Workshops and Events: Saturday 14th November - Winter Scene with Deer Tutor: Sheila Williams Cost: £45 pp In this workshop, Sheila will demonstrate and guide you through painting a snow scene in watercolour using a variety of techniques. Work from images provided or bring along your own image of an animal or a person to include in the scene. Suitable for all abilities. Friday 20th - Sunday 22nd November - 3 day Portraits workshop Tutor: Aine Devine Cost: £180 pp In this 3 day workshop, Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year finalist Aine Devine, will be guiding an investigation into the process of painting a portrait from direct observation of the model in watercolour paint. We are very lucky to have Aine visit the Studio all the way from Scotland - an opportunity not to be missed! As usual places are limited. Saturday 28th November - Cherry Trees in Blossom Tutor: Guy Manning Cost: £45 pp In this step by step workshop you will be guided through Guy’s technique for creating an expressive acrylic painting using layers of paint to suggest strength, movement and sunlight. Suitable for all abilities. Saturday 9th January - “Does my bum look big in this?” Tutor: Jantien Powell Cost: £45 pp In this step by step workshop you will be using collage, inks and acrylics to create a vibrant, colourful painting with hidden depths! Suitable for all abilities.

Saturday 16th January - After Degas, Figure study in pastels Tutor: Maggie Davies Cost: £45 pp In this step by step workshop, Maggie will guide you through the process of painting a figure study in pastels. Including brief demonstrations of techniques as well as tips for composition, colour, tone, light and depth. This workshop is suitable for all levels of ability. Saturday 23rd January - The unique charm of Naïve Art Tutor: Sue Morgan Cost: £45 pp As children we all have a unique vision of the world and highly imaginative ways of expressing it in art. In this workshop you will explore techniques for recapturing the simplicity, innocence and honesty of this naïve approach to painting and drawing. Suitable for all abilities.

Suitable for all abilities. Saturday 6th February - Painting Backwards Tutor: Janis Fry Cost: £45 pp We often grow up thinking that art work begins with a drawing that is painted in afterwards. This workshop turns this idea on its head, producing fully integrated paintings where objects relate well to each other taking prominence or receding to create better composition. Suitable for all abilities. Monday 8th - Saturday 13th February - Learn to Draw Tutor: Jantien Powell Cost: £250 pp This popular 6 day intensive course teaches the five basic principles of drawing. Suitable for complete beginners or those wishing to improve - the results of this course are amazing! Saturday 20th February - Winter Watercolours Tutor: Paul Weaver Cost: £45 pp The Winter landscape creates a wide range of inspiring subjects for the watercolour painter. On this course Paul will focus on techniques for creating a sense of space, light and atmosphere in your work including rivers, skies, tree forms and the effects of sunlight and shadows. Saturday 27th February - “Mule Bridge” Tutor: Howard Jones Cost: £45 pp In this workshop students will be experimenting with some unexpected materials to produce vibrant and expressive contemporary watercolour paintings that are full of light and life. Suitable for all abilities. Saturday 5th March - Painting Water in Watercolours Tutor: Peter Cronin Cost: £45 pp This class will focus on sound watercolour techniques for painting running and still water as well as tips and techniques for creating wet streets and reflections. Suitable for all abilities though some watercolour experience is preferable.

Workshops and Events: Saturday 12th March - Reflecting on Figures Tutor: Sheila Williams Cost: £45 pp In this workshop you will be looking at the way in which the reflection of a figure is refracted in water and exploring how to convey the luminosity of light by layering and glazing colours. Suitable for all abilities. Saturday 19th March - Botanical Illustration in Watercolour Tutor: Debbie Devauden Cost: £45 pp Students will be guided through the process of creating a detailed Botanical illustration of the flower or specimen of their choice, focusing on the skills of observation and accurate depiction of colour, form and detail in watercolour. Suitable for all abilities. Saturday 9th April - Animals in the landscape in Acrylics Tutor: Paul Weaver Cost: £45 pp In this workshop Paul will be covering techniques for capturing an impression of the landscape as well as exploring subjects where the animals are the main focal point of the painting as well as distant forms in the landscape.

Saturday 16th April - Combining Print and Paint Tutor: Janis Fry Cost: £45 pp This workshop explores the combination of printing and watercolours, resulting in an exciting layered effect that creates new depths and fascinating effects, using a simple kitchen table printing method. Suitable for all abilities. Saturday 23rd April - Cock a whoop over brusho! Tutor: Jantien Powell Cost: £45 pp Experiment with the exciting effects of brusho (a watercolour pigment powder) and acrylic inks in this step by step workshop in which you will create an expressive and vibrant painting of a rooster. Suitable for all abilities. Saturday 30th April - Wild Animals in mixed media Tutor: Alison Board Cost: £45 pp In this workshop, students will be learning mixed media techniques for creating fur texture to portray the anima of your choice. Suitable for all abilities.

Workshops and Events: Saturday 7th May - Seascape in oils Tutor: Colin Ross Jack Cost: £45 pp Painting a rough sea, waves breaking on rocks is a challenging but wonderful subject. In the absence of sea at Abergavenny, suitable compositions and reference material will be provided! Suitable for all abilities. Monday 16th - Friday 20th May - Watercolour Painting Week Tutor: Peter Cronin Cost: £225 pp An opportunity to spend five days improving your painting, drawing and compositional skills with Royal Society of Marine Artists member Peter Cronin. All aspects of picture making will be dealt with as well as a critique of your current skills and clear suggestions for individual progression. Suitable for all levels. Saturday 28th - Monday 30th May - Open Studio Once again Chapel Cottage Studio will be opening its doors from 10am - 4pm across the bank holiday weekend as part of the annual Crickhowell Opens Studio’s event. As well as a selection of works by Jantien Powell there will also be a varied exhibition by the tutors and students of the Studio. There will be tea, coffee and home made cakes on offer as well as full details of all of our upcoming classes and events. Saturday 11th June - The local landscape in Acrylics Tutor: Paul Weaver Cost: £45 pp The Studio is surrounded with inspiring landscape subjects including rural buildings, trees and distant hills. Weather permitting this class will go outdoors to paint, exploring techniques for capturing open landscape and distance as well as structure and form in closer subjects. Saturday 18th June - Creating semi-representational Art Tutor: Gary Ford Cost: £45 pp Students will be encouraged to break away from the traditional and realistic interpretation of landscape or townscape painting in order to create semi-representational or abstract images that open up a whole new experience to the artist. Suitable for all abilities. Saturday 25th June - Animal Portraits in acrylic and pastels Tutor: Thuline De Cock Cost: £45 pp In this workshop students will be drawing and painting animals from their own favourite photographs (if you prefer you can use the images provided) using acrylics and black and white pastels (more colours if you want!). Suitable For all abilities.

Workshops and Events: Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd July - Paper and Print workshop Tutor: Stephanie Turnbull Cost: £100 pp including materials This two day workshop will allow participants to combine the arts of papermaking and printmaking. Spend the day creating artistic or decorative sheets of paper before focusing on designing and cutting a lino block which can be printed onto your hand made paper. Suitable for all abilities. Saturday 9th July - Painting outdoors with a digital device Tutor: Joseph A Connor Cost: £45 pp This class aims to equip you with the skills to create and share compelling art outdoors using the ArtRage painting application. Weather permitting you will be working outdoors with your digital device, if the weather is inclement you will be working from photographs indoors. Suitable for all abilities. Monday 11th - Saturday 16th July - Learn to Draw Tutor: Jantien Powell Cost: £250 pp This popular 6 day intensive course teaches the five basic principles of drawing. Suitable for complete beginners or those wishing to improve - the results of this course are amazing!

Saturday 23rd July - Stoney Ground Farmhouse Tutor: Howard Jones Cost: £45 pp In this step by step workshop students will be looking at colour and composition and paint effects as techniques for creating contemporary watercolour landscape paintings that are open and expressive. Suitable for all abilities.

How to pay: We accept cheque’s made payable to Chapel Cottage Studio, cash, direct bank transfers (details available on request), any major credit or debit cards, paypal payments via our online booking form or directly to info@chapelcottagestudio.co.uk. There are no fees for any of our payment methods. Please note that your place on any class is not booked until paid for in full.

Group Bookings and Social Events: We are very happy to offer group bookings for between 10 and 12 people at a reduced rate of £35 pp including lunch. You can either book one of the workshops from our programme (subject to availability) or we can arrange a date and topic that suits your group. Please note that there will be a further £5 charge pp for any classes requiring a model. We also offer a mornings sketching in the garden or a 2 hour workshop or demo in the Studio followed by a delicious seasonal lunch in the conservatory for groups of 10-12 people at a price of £25 pp. You are more than welcome to stay on to sketch or paint untutored for the afternoon as well. This makes a really lovely alternative to the traditional end of term or club “do”. Please note that we do not hold any events in the months of August or December.

Gift Vouchers:

Vouchers for Chapel Cottage Studio are available from £10 and make a fantastic versatile gift. Book for a specific class or allow the recipient to choose their own. Vouchers can be used towards materials from our Studio shop as well as greetings cards, paintings, prints, classes and even the painting holiday!

Cancellations: If for any reason we have to cancel your class we will either issue you with a credit note or transfer your booking to another class of your choice (subject to availability). If you have to cancel your place on a class the policy is as follows: Notification 3 months or more before the date of your class - full refund issued Notification 2-3 months before the date of your class - 50% refund issued Less than 2 months before the dates of your class - no refund issued *unless we are able to fill your place.

Painting Holidays: Every year Chapel Cottage Studio takes a small group of students to the beautiful island of Mallorca for a weeks painting and sketching in the sun. This year there will be three holidays:

•Holiday 1 - 27th April to the 4th May Cost: £840 pp The first holiday, tutored by Jantien Powell, will be staying at a beautiful refurbished farmhouse near the village of Lloseta roughly half way between the cities of Palma and Alcudia. “Son Pelai” has 7 attractive bedrooms and 4 bathrooms as well as stunning gardens and terraces, perfect for al fresco painting and sketching. It’s location is the ideal combination of peace, quiet and a countryside feel with the added convenience of it’s proximity to the village centre. •Holiday 2 - 18th to the 25th of May

The third holiday, tutored by Jantien Powell will be staying at the stunning town house “95 Calle Huerta” in the centre of the old town of Pollenca, North Mallorca. We have been visiting this villa for several years and have found it’s facilities to be close to perfect. There are a total of 7 beautiful bedrooms, all en-suite as well as wonderful terraces for al fresco dining and a private pool. The vibrant town of Pollenca is the ideal setting for a week of painting and sketching. Find out more about this villa here:

The itinerary: During each week students will have plenty of time to paint and sketch in and around the villas and the local towns, making the most of Mallorca’s stunning scenery and vibrant bustling markets. All holidays also include trips out to paint and sketch at various beautiful locations across the island, so you will get to see a bit of the real Mallorca. There will be tuition for 6 hours per day with one free day for students to use as they please. Students are free to dip in and out of tuition (as well as the private pool!) at any time. What you need to know: Both villas have well equipped kitchens for students who wish to cater for themselves, alternatively there are plenty of local cafe’s and restaurants close to the villas for meals out. The price of the holiday includes accommodation, tuition and all transport within Mallorca. Painting materials are also supplied. The cost does not include flights. You will need suitable travel insurance. Jantien Powell and Chapel Cottage Studio are not responsible for any refunds should you be unable to attend for any reason. Tutors at Chapel Cottage Studio: Aine Devine studied Art at the Crawford College of Art, and has won several awards for her portraiture. She recently made the final of the Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year competition. This will be Aine’s first class with us.

Jantien Powell the resident artist and tutor at the Studio works in a variety of medium. She has been a professional artist and tutor since 2003 and holds a range of classes and workshops throughout the year.

Alex Brown is a graduate of the Camberwell School of Arts and works in a variety of medium, specialising in oils and charcoal. His love of colour, light and movement are themes that unify his work. Alex teaches our Oils class.

Joseph Connor specialises in painting outdoors using mobile phones and tablets and has exhibited his work internationally. We are very happy to welcome Joseph back to teach digital art at the Studio for a 2nd year.

Alison Board spent many years working in the Arts before pursuing her ambition of studying for an Art degree in 2009. Alison uses her countryside home and family history to inspire her work. Alison is one of this years new tutors.

Maggie Davies trained at Cardiff Art College and has exhibited her vibrant and richly textured paintings widely. Maggie will be teaching two pastels workshops at the Studio for a second year running.

Brian Wheeler works in watercolours, acrylics and pastels, capturing the elusive qualities of mood, atmosphere and light. A very popular tutor, Brian has been teaching our watercolours classes for many years.

Mick Arnold has extensive experience as an art tutor, abstraction, figurative elements, colour and light are important themes in his work. Mick teaches at the Studio alongside his wife Thea.

Colin Ross Jack was born and bred in Scotland and has exhibited regularly for many years. He has an impressive 30 years experience teaching Art and specialises in oils. Colin is a new tutor here at the Studio this year.

Paul Weaver began his career in Graphic Design before becoming a professional artist. He specialises in watercolour techniques and has been one of the most popular tutors at the Studio for several years.

Debbie Devauden specialises in the fascinating art of Botanical Illustration, she has a diploma from the English Gardening School as well as years of teaching experience. Debbie has been working at the Studio for several years.

Peter Cronin specialises in watercolours and is an elected member of the Watercolour Society of Wales. He has been working here for years and will be holding our first watercolours painting week in 2016.

Feona Ness has been a professional Artist for over 25 years and has many years experience teaching art. She loves to paint powerful skies and rich, landscapes and is a new tutor to the Studio this year.

Sheila Williams is an experienced tutor with a background in Illustration. Her work reflects her love of the countryside and her watercolour workshops have been a popular choice at the Studio since 2014.

Gary Ford gained his MA Fine Arts Degree from Cardiff University in 2006 after a 27 year long “gap year”! He has gained notoriety for his quirky, colourful, semi-abstract style of Art which he teaches here at the Studio.

Stephanie Turnbull gained a degree in Fine Art Printing before training as a professional Lithographic and Collaborative Print Maker. She has been offering print workshops at the Studio for several years.

Guy Manning lives and works in Tenby, West Wales. His paintings reflect the love that he has for the landscape and have been exhibited internationally. Guy will be teaching his techniques at his first workshop at the Studio this year.

Sue Morgan trained in Graphic Illustration and has many years of teaching experience. Her “innocent” art style owes much to naïve and primitive painters. Sue is a new tutor at the Studio this year.

Howard Jones has an exceptional ability to capture a wide variety of subject matter and specialises in contemporary watercolours. Howard has been teaching at the Studio for years and continues to be very popular.

Thea Arnold studied painting and print making before teaching Art in the UK and abroad. She and her husband Mick provide exciting and explorative workshops here at the Studio.

Janis Fry trained at Bangor University and Swansea College of Art and has had a varied career in the Arts. She has been working with us for many years and always brings something new and exciting to her workshops.

Thuline De Cock, originally from Belgium, has been a professional Artist and tutor for 15 years. Her work has been exhibited widely- we are thrilled to welcome Thuline to work at Chapel Cottage Studio this year.

Where is Chapel Cottage Studio? In the little village of Llanddewi Rhydderch, just 4 miles outside Abergavenny, off the B4598 to Raglan. Follow the brown signs to Chapel Cottage Studio (mileage indicated). We are approximately a 10 minute drive from Abergavenny.
