Who are we? A small family run business, Chapel Cottage Studio is an Art teaching Studio and Gallery, nestled into the Welsh countryside, just 10 minutes outside Abergavenny and 40 minutes from the M4. We host a wide range of friendly, informal Art classes to suit all abilities.
Jantien Powell our resident artist and tutor founded Chapel Cottage Studio in 2008. Jantien became a professional artist in 2003 and exhibits widely in and around the South Wales area, her work is well known locally and focuses on the faces and places of rural Wales. Evening classes: We now hold 3 evening classes here at the Studio on a Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday. All classes run from 7 - 9 pm and are tutored by Jantien Powell. There will be 3 classes per term that are taught by one of our selected Guest Tutors to ensure that a good range of techniques and styles are covered (dates and tutors tbc) Each class covers a range of topics including pastels, acrylics, pencil drawing, charcoal and chalk and mixed media. The Wednesday class in particular is aimed more towards the beginner artist, though all abilities are welcome to all evening classes.

With the exception of Life Drawing, all places must be booked in advance. Priority will always be given to those booking for the full year.
Oil Painting with Alex Brown: This course is split into three terms of three classes, throughout the year. Students will be guided through all of the basic techniques needed to master the art of Oil Painting including tips for composition, various painting techniques such as palette knife painting, wet on wet and traditional oil painting as well as methods for colour mixing. Monthly Portraits Club: This monthly club is an opportunity to meet up in a friendly, informal setting to practise your portraiture. There is no tutor for this club, members are encouraged to share tips and advice to help everyone to learn from each other. You do not need to book this club in advance, just come along and pay on the day. £12 pp per session which includes a portrait model each month. *New for 2017* ~ Monday Morning Studio Time We will now be opening up the Studio every Monday morning (except during August and December) for students to come in and use the space to work on their own projects, untutored. We know how hard it can be to find time and space to paint at home, so why not set aside a few hours for yourself, come along and make use of the space and the facilities and see how much your work improves for some regular practise! Instead of heading to a cafe for a coffee and a chat with friends, why not meet at the Studio and add an extra shot of creativity to your morning coffee! The Studio will be open from 9.30 am - 1.00 pm and as usual tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided as well as easels, drawing boards, water pots etc. Materials such as paints, pastels, paper and canvases will be available to purchase from the Studio shop. No need to book in advance, just come along! ÂŁ5 pp per morning.

Chapel Cottage Studio Competitions: A Child’s Christmas In Wales
From “A Child’s Christmas in Wales” Illustrated by Edward Ardizzone
Paint a Greetings Card in any medium on the theme of “A Child’s Christmas in Wales” by Dylan Thomas. Maybe a landscape, seascape, portrait, still life or go abstract - it is entirely up to you! Entries will be exhibited at the Studio as part of the Christmas Exhibition. Our panel of judges will select the top 5 entries. Entry is FREE and all cards are to be submitted (clearly labelled on the reverse with your name the medium used and the card title if you have one) by the 25th November 2016. Your painting must be A5 size (210 x 148 mm) and can be on any support (i.e canvas , board , paper) Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Please get in touch for more information.
Mountains & Moorland You are invited to produce a piece of work on the theme of “Mountains and Moorland”. Using a medium of your choice produce a piece of artwork that represents Mountains and Moorland it can be figurative or abstract, landscape, portrait or still life - be creative and think outside the box! Entry is FREE. All entries must be received, clearly labelled with your name, medium and artwork title, ready to hang (with string or wire - no mirror plated) by the 22nd of May 2017. Our panel of judges will decide on the top five entries which will be exhibited as part of the Crickhowell Open Studio’s Event. Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Sat 10th September - Tonal Impact in Watercolour Tutor: Paul Weaver Cost: £47 pp Capturing accurate tone is vital for creating a sense of light, depth, atmosphere and definition in our work. Paul will focus on how to avoid a washed out result, exploring brush strokes, pigment control, single and 3 colour studies to create watercolours with strength and impact! Sat 17th September - Chasing the Storm in Oils Tutor: Feona Ness Cost: £47 pp This oil painting workshop is designed for you to follow “step by step” to create a stormy seascape. You will learn how to experiment with oil paints, mediums and various techniques. No experience needed, just enthusiasm and a love of painting! Sat 24th September - Chiaroscuro, Painting with Light Tutor: Maggie Davies Cost: £47 pp Chiaroscuro is an Italian term meaning literally Light-Dark. In art it refers to clear tonal contrasts and was a popular technique with Renaissance artists. In this class students will be creating their own chiaroscuro portraits using black paper and white pastels to create dramatic images. Suitable for all abilities. Sun 25th September - Yachts in the Harbour in Acrylic or Oil Tutor: Colin Ross Jack Cost: £47 pp This workshop will address this popular subject using either oil or acrylic paint - depending on students preference, inviting a variety of techniques such as brush or palette knife, including Colin’s method of monochrome under painting to establish tone before using colour. Suitable for all abilities. Sat 15th & Sunday 16th October - Exploring the Landscape Tutor: Mick & Thea Arnold Cost: £94 pp In this two day mixed media workshop you will pick up tips and techniques for incorporating both figurative and abstract ideas and elements within your landscape painting as well as touching on methods for using digital images and photographs to influence your work. Sat 22nd October - The Revealing Technique in Watercolour Tutor: Janis Fry Cost: £47 pp If you have ever struggled to get in to watercolours, this is the workshop for you! Beginning with a bold drawing you will then experiment with painting the background and foreground in a free style to create soft and hard edges and a subject that emerges from and disappears into it’s surroundings. Suitable for all abilities.

Workshops and Events: Sat 29th October - Painting Sea, Cliffs & Rocks in Watercolour Tutor: Peter Cronin Cost: £47 pp In this workshop students will be picking up tips and techniques for painting atmospheric seascapes from Royal Society of Marine Artists member Peter Cronin. Learn how to create the effect of waves crashing onto rocks as well as techniques for sound composition. Suitable for all abilities. Sat 5th November - “Yupo Magic” Mixed Media Workshop Tutor: Howard Jones Cost: £47 pp An exploration into the wonders of working in watercolour on synthetic paper. Essential for those who are adventurous, but also hugely beneficial to anyone wishing to overcome fears of working with watercolour. Suitable for all abilities. Sat 12th November - “Midnight Fox” in Watercolour Tutor: Alison Fennell Cost: £47 pp In this workshop students will be painting an atmospheric moonlit meadow scene with a wistful fox gazing upwards. Several techniques will be covered including wet in wet, loose washes, use of masking fluid as well as painting details. Suitable for all abilities. Sat 19th November - “Pets with Personality” in Watercolour Tutor: Trevor Osborne Cost: £47 pp (Including materials) This course will explore techniques to render a likeness of a pet and then go beyond that to express who the pet is. In this we will explore the use of colour, texture, composition and tone to give a painting with personality. Also to include tips for taking photos to paint from. Suitable for all abilities. Sat 26th November - Winter Landscape in Watercolour Tutor: Brian Wheeler Cost: £47 pp In this workshop students will be guided through the process of composing and creating a winter landscape painting in watercolours. Ideal for anyone who is new to the medium or to Art in general, you will go home from this class with a finished painting as well as lots of new techniques under your belt. Fri 2nd - Sun 4th December - Christmas Exhibition and Gift Fair An opportunity to come along and get ahead with your Christmas shopping by bagging a piece of locally made original Art or Craft. There will be a selection of paintings, prints, greetings cards, sculpture and crafts on offer as well as tea, coffee and cake. A chance to pick up some really individual and unique gifts while also helping to support local Artists and Makers. The exhibition will remain open by appointment throughout December.

Tutor: Alison Board Cost: £47 pp A day spent experimenting with ways to paint with the versatile and exciting medium that is Brusho Crystal Colour. This workshop will combine watercolour, ink and powders to give our subject expression and movement in an impressionistic style. Suitable for all abilities. Sat 21st January - Stormy Landscape in Pastels Tutor: Maggie Davies Cost: £47 pp In this step by step workshop, Maggie will guide you through the process of painting a stormy mountain landscape scene in pastels. Including tips for composition, colour, tone, light and depth. This workshop is suitable for all levels of ability.
Fri 27th & Sat 28th January - Where the Stones Meet the Sea (Acrylics) Tutor: Jantien Powell Cost: £94 pp In this two day workshop students will be learning how to create a large scale Seascape inspired by Jantien’s “Where the Stones Meet the Sea” painting, using a variety of acrylic techniques including brushwork, palette knife and finger painting! Sat 4th & Sun 5th February - Acrylics Unleashed Tutor: Glyn Macey Cost: £125 pp We are thrilled to have Glyn back at the Studio for another knock out two day workshop in which you will learn to use acrylic paints in creative and surprising ways to produce work full of life and energy. Sat 11th February - Landscape in Pastels Workshop Tutor: Trevor Osborne Cost: £47 pp (including materials) In this workshop you will be looking at the landscape in changing seasons and picking up tips and techniques for capturing this using pastels. You will look at using a limited palette of pastels, colour mixing with pastels and how the palette will change with the year and the subject. Suitable for all abilities. Sat 18th & Sun 19th February - Watercolour Portraits Tutor: Aine Divine Cost: £140 pp Another chance to attend this Portraits master class with Sky Portrait Artist of the Year runner up Aine Divine. This 2 day workshop will be an investigation of the process of painting a portrait from direct observation of the model, in water colour paint.

Including tips for capturing the winter atmosphere as well as composition skills and methods for painting trees and hedges in winter. Suitable for all abilities.
Sat 11th March - Oil Painting with a Palette Knife (After Kyffin Williams) Tutor: Elin Sian Blake Cost: £47 pp In this workshop students will be guided to create a Kyffin Williams inspired landscape painting using a palette knife, in oils. This step by step workshop is suitable for all abilities. Sat 18th & Sun 19th March - The Magic of Venice in Watercolours Tutor: Paul Weaver Cost: £94 pp Taking this magical city as our inspiration, this two day course will explore techniques for simplifying buildings, weathered walls, figures, water, boats and reflections, as well capturing a sense of light and atmosphere. Sat 25th March - One Hour and Daily Painting Tutor: Jantien Powell Cost: £47 pp In this workshop students will be finding out about the benefits of one hour painting and daily painting as practises to work into your routine. Daily Painting is a movement that encourages Artists to create one small painting every day, find out how your work can improve with this simple but effective method of working. Sat 1st April - Sunrise and Sunset over Water in Acrylic or Oil Tutor: Colin Ross Jack Cost: £47 pp This workshop will look at Colin’s methods for capturing a sun rise or sun set scene over water, in oil or acrylic paint depending on each students preference. Including techniques for using a monochrome under painting to establish tone, before adding colour. Participants may use oil or acrylic paints.

Workshops and Events: Sat 8th & Sun 9th April - The Freedom of Charcoal Tutor: Alex Brown Cost: £105 pp This two day workshop focuses on the skills required for figure drawing with charcoal. Working from a life model you will learn how to capture light and shade, form, depth and expression to create a dynamic life study full of freedom and movement. Sat 22nd April - Bluebells & Birches Watercolour Workshop Tutor: Alison Fennell Cost: £47 pp In this workshop we will be painting a sunlit woodland scene with a stand of delicate silvery birches amidst a floor of bluebells. We will be using wet in wet techniques to create a subtle background in a vignette fashion before continuing with masking fluid and detail painting techniques. Suitable for all abilities. Sat 29th April - Rich, Subtle, Easy Effects with Inks Tutor: Janis Fry Cost: £47 pp This way of painting with inks and watercolour produces paintings with the richness and colour strength of stained glass, combined with some soft subtle effects produced by bleach, water, white gouache and salt. A really interesting and experimental day suitable for all abilities. Sat 6th May - Cobwebs in Watercolour and Ink Tutor: Alison Board Cost: £47 pp Gets to grips with masking out to create a fine cobweb hanging between grasses or seed heads. We will use watercolour and add ink to give the piece drama and show the cobweb's gossamer frame. Suitable for all abilities. Sat 13th May - Experimental Drawing Tutor: Venetia Norris Cost: £47 pp In this mixed media workshop you will explore nature close up as well as local views and landscapes, using a variety of expressive marks and detailed observations. Students will be encouraged to work directly from life creating their own interpretations using a variety of mediums including ink, pencil, collage and paint. Suitable for all abilities. Sat 20th May - Dramatic Skies in Watercolour Tutor: Paul Weaver Cost: £47 pp The sky is the primary source of light in the landscape, setting the tone and atmosphere for the entire painting. This course will focus on the dramatic effects of sun bursts and backlit clouds, billowing cumulous, threatening rain storms and vibrant sunsets. If you want to loosen up your watercolours, this is for you!

Workshops and Events: Sat 27th Sun 28th & Mon 29th May - Open Studios Event Chapel Cottage Studio will once again be opening its doors from 10 am - 4 pm across the Bank Holiday weekend as part of the annual Crickhowell Open Studios Event. As usual we will have a selection of Jantien’s work on display as well as an exhibition of works by our fabulous guest tutors and talented students. There will be home made cakes and teas and coffee available as well as full details on all of our classes and events. Fri 2nd, Sat 3rd & Sun 4th June - Painting Flowers in Acrylics Tutor: Aine Divine Cost: £190 pp On this three day acrylic flower painting course, we will look at ways of describing the flower still life set up first in loose layers, using large brushes and rags, scumbling on dry paint & splashing wet paint. In this way we will gradually ease our way into the painting process and the particular set up before us. Sat 10th & Sun 11th June - Hazy Lane in Acrylics Tutor: Guy Manning Cost: £94 pp In this two day step by step workshop you will be using the traditional "dark to light" technique to gain an understanding of the way in which layers can create depth in acrylic paintings. Suitable for all abilities. Sat 17th & Sun 18th June - Moving into the Landscape with Pastels Tutor: Jenny Halstead Cost: £94 pp Starting with pen and wash techniques to make tonal studies and observational drawings, we will work outside sketching the surrounding landscape. The second day we explore pastels and the various surfaces and ways of working before taking one sketch and working it through into a finished pastel painting. Mon 26th - Friday 30th June - Watercolour Painting Week Tutor: Peter Cronin Cost: £260 pp A chance to spend five days improving your painting, drawing and compositional skills with Royal Society Of Marine Artists member Peter Cronin. All aspects of picture making will be dealt with as well as suggestions for improvement. Please note that painting outdoors will be one of the main focuses of the course. Suitable for all abilities. Mon 3rd - Sat 8th July - Learn to Paint! Tutor: Jantien Powell Cost: £260 pp A new course for 2017 and an extension of our popular “Learn to Draw” course, this intensive week will help you to progress from figurative drawing to working with colour including colour theory and composition as well as tips and techniques for working with acrylics and pastels. An ideal introduction into the world of colour, suitable for all abilities.

A lesson in "Less is More"! Sat 22nd July - Childrens Illustration Workshop Tutor: Sue Morgan Cost: £47 pp In this workshop, participants will be creating an original bedtime story in simple words and pictures. Picture books for very young children are more popular than ever, develop your own short story suitable for a pre-school child and consider ways of combining it with your own personal illustration style. Suitable for all abilities. Sat 29th July - Creating Movement in Watercolour Tutor: Ali Lindley Cost: £55 pp Spend a day with award winning member of the Society of Women Artists, Ali Lindley who will be showing you how to let loose with watercolour to bring life and character to your paintings. Explore techniques for creating movement and speed with easy brush strokes. Suitable for all abilities.

How to pay: We accept cheques made payable to Chapel Cottage Studio, cash, direct bank transfers (details available on request), any major credit or debit cards and paypal payments via our online booking system or directly to info@chapelcottagestudio.co.uk There are no fees for any of our payment methods. Please note that your place on any class is not booked until paid for in full.
Cancellations: If for any reason we have to cancel your class we will either issue you with a credit note or transfer your booking to another class of your choice (subject to availability). If you have to cancel your place on a class the policy is as follows: Notification 3 months or more before the date of your class - full refund issued Notification 2-3 months before the date of your class - 50% refund issued Notification less than 2 months before the dates of your class - no refund issued however, if we are able to fill your place with a paying student, we are happy to offer you a full refund. All classes and events are subject to change if necessary though all possible measures will be taken to avoid cancellations or alterations.

Chapel Cottage Studio Shepherd’s Hut Alternatively we are happy to offer basic overnight accommodation in our cosy Shepherd’s Hut which is situated next door to the Studio.
Ideal for those who are visiting from further afield, the Shepherd’s Hut offers basic“glamping” accommodation on site. It is cosy and comfortable and is equipped with a bed, sink, kettle, radio, toaster and log burner and has use of the Studio shower room. Group Bookings and Social Events: We are very happy to offer group bookings for between 10 and 12 people at a reduced rate of £37 pp including lunch. You can either book one of the workshops from our programme (subject to availability) or we can arrange a date, tutor and topic that suits your group. Please note that there will be a further £5 charge pp for any classes requiring a model.
We also offer a mornings sketching in the garden or a 2 hour workshop or demo in the Studio followed by a delicious complimentary lunch in the conservatory for groups of 10-12 people at a price of £27 pp. You are very welcome to stay on to sketch or paint untutored for the afternoon as well. This makes a really lovely alternative to the traditional end of term or club “do”. Please note that we do not hold any events in the months of August or December.

Painting Holidays: Every year Chapel Cottage Studio takes a small group of students to the beautiful island of Mallorca for a weeks painting and sketching in the sun. In 2017 there will be two Painting Holidays:
•Holiday 1 - 26th April to the 3rd May Cost: £930 pp The first holiday of 2017 will be staying at a beautiful mansion house called “Son Andres” situated between the towns of Manacor and Sant Llorenc in the East of the Island. The property comprises of a 4 bedroom mansion house and two separate apartments, each with a further 2 bedrooms. There is a beautiful private pool surrounded by lawns and Mediterranean gardens. •Holiday 2 - 14th to the 21st of June
Cost: £975 pp The second holiday will be returning to the stunning town house “95 Calle Huerta” in the centre of the old town of Pollenca, North Mallorca. We have been visiting this villa for several years and have found it’s facilities to be close to perfect. There are a total of 7 beautiful bedrooms, all en-suite as well as wonderful terraces for al fresco dining and a private pool. The vibrant town of Pollenca is the ideal setting for a week of painting and sketching. Find out more about this villa here:
http://www.pollensahouse.com/home The itinerary: During each week students will have plenty of time to paint and sketch in and around the villas and the local towns, making the most of Mallorca’s stunning scenery and vibrant bustling markets. All holidays also include trips out to paint and sketch at various beautiful locations across the island, so you will get to see a bit of the real Mallorca. There will be tuition for 6 hours per day with one free day for students to use as they please. Students are free to dip in and out of tuition (as well as the private pool!) at any time. What you need to know: Both villas have well equipped kitchens for students who wish to cater for themselves, alternatively there are plenty of local cafes and restaurants close to each villa for meals out. The price of the holiday includes accommodation and tuition as well as a minibus and driver within Mallorca. Painting materials are also supplied. The cost does not include flights or meals, though there will be basic provisions for breakfast and lunch when at the villa. You will need suitable travel insurance. Tutors at Chapel Cottage Studio: Jantien Powell - the resident artist and tutor at the Studio, Jantien works in a variety of medium including acrylics, mixed media and pastels. She has been a professional artist and tutor since 2003, opening Chapel Cottage Studio in 2008. Jantien is drawn to the faces and paces of South Wales, as a farmer’s daughter, rural scenes are what draws her eye. Colour and pattern are prominent themes within her work and she loves to pick out the most unexpected colours from a scene to see how it alters the dynamic of an image. Jantien holds a range of classes and workshops at the Studio throughout the year.

Aine Divine studied Art at The Crawford College of Art and has won awards for her portraiture. She recently made the final of the Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year competition.
Brian Wheeler works in watercolour, acrylics and pastels, capturing the elusive qualities of mood, atmosphere and light. A very popular tutor, Brian has been teaching at the studio for many years.
Alex Brown is a graduate of the Camberwell School of Arts and works in a variety of medium, specialising in oils and charcoal. His love of colour, light and movement are themes that unify his work.
Colin Ross Jack was born and bred in Scotland and has exhibited widely for many years. He has an impressive 30 years Art teaching experience and specialises in oils and acrylics.
Ali Lindley is an award winning member of the Society of Women Artists. She is a creative artist who specialises in watercolour and mixed media work. She exhibits widely and is a very experienced tutor.
Elin Sian Blake is a highly acclaimed contemporary Welsh artist who has won several national awards. She exhibits her work widely and specialises in themes which reflect her cultural heritage.
Alison Board spent many years working in the Arts before pursuing her ambition of studying for an Art degree in 2009. Alison uses her countryside home and family history to inspire her work.
Feona Ness has been a professional artist for over 25 years and has many years experience teaching art. She loves to paint powerful skies and rich strong, often abstract landscapes scenes.
Alison Fennell devoted her self to art after life threatening surgery in 2008. Her work is exhibited widely and has been licensed by names such as John Lewis and Dunelm. Alison is also an experienced Tutor.
Glyn Macey is a highly acclaimed Cornish artist with links to the South Wales Valleys. He specialises in acrylics, mixed media and mark making to create exciting, dynamic, vibrant paintings that are full of life.

Tutors at Chapel Cottage Studio: Guy Manning lives and works in Tenby, West Wales. His paintings reflect the love that he has for the land scape and have been exhibited internationally. He is an experienced and popular tutor.
Paul Weaver began his career in Graphic Design before becoming a professional artist. He specialises in watercolour techniques and had been a highly popular tutor at the Studio for many years.
Howard Jones has an exceptional ability to capture a wide variety of subject matter and specialises in contemporary watercolours and mixed media. He has been a very popular tutor at the Studio for many years.
Peter Cronin specialises in watercolours and is an elected member of the Watercolour Society of Wales. Peter is a popular tutor who holds a range of Watercolour classes at the Studio every year.
Janis Fry trained at Bangor University and Swansea College of Arts and has had a varied career. She has been working with us for many years and always brings something new and exciting to the table!
Sue Morgan trained in Graphic Illustration and has many years of teaching experience. Her “innocent” art style owes much to naïve painters. Sue is a very popular tutor providing insightful and thought provoking classes.
Jenny Halstead began her career as a medical and scientific Illustrator. She later returned to the freedom of fine art and has a fascination with form and colour and their interaction with light, specialising in pastels.
Thea Aronold studied painting and print making before teaching Art in the UK and abroad. She is inspired by the line, rhythm and harmony of the landscape and provides exciting workshops along side her husband Mick.
Maggie Davies trained at Cardiff Art College and has Exhibited her vibrant, richly Textured paintings widely. Maggie has been a very popular tutor and the Studio for several years.
Trevor Osborne is a highly experienced artist and educator who’s work has been led by a life long fascination with light and colour. He exhibits widely and works in a variety of medium including pastels and watercolour.
Mick Arnold has extensive experience as an Art tutor, abstraction, figurative elements, colour and light are important themes within his work. Mick and his wife Thea teach very popular mixed media workshops at the Studio.
Venetia Norris creates mixed media drawings inspired by nature. She has exhibited her work widely including five solo shows and she was recently awarded an artist fellowship. She is also an experienced art tutor.
