A small family run business, Chapel Cottage Studio is an Art Teaching Studio and Gallery nestled into the Welsh countryside, just 4 miles outside Abergavenny. We host a wide range of art classes suitable for all levels of ability from absolute beginners to those looking to improve and evolve their work.

Who are we? Jantien Powell our resident artist and tutor founded Chapel Cottage Studio in 2008. Jantien became a professional artist in 2003 and exhibits widely in and around the South Wales area, her work is well known locally and focuses on the faces and places of rural Wales. Known as Tiz, she is responsible for the administration, bookings and general management of Chapel Cottage Studio. Evening classes: We hold 2 evening classes here at the Studio, one on a Monday evening and one on a Tuesday evening. Both classes run from 7 - 9 pm and are tutored by Jantien. Each class covers a wide range of techniques including pastels, acrylics, pencil drawing, charcoal and mixed media - just choose which evening suits you best.

This class will build on your skills to improve your watercolour technique in a loose painterly style. Use whichever medium you prefer. £15 pp per class - no need to book in advance. *NEW* An Introduction to Oil Painting: In this twice monthly class, students will be guided through all of the basic techniques needed to master the art of Oil painting. Suitable for those who are completely new to the medium as well as those who are looking to improve. Tutor: Jenny Joice

Monthly Portraits Club: This monthly club is an opportunity to meet up in a friendly, informal setting to practise your portraiture. Work in what ever medium you like. There is no tutor for this club, members are encouraged to share tips and advice to help everyone to learn from each other. You do not need to book this club in advance. Just come along and pay on the day.

Workshops and Events: Workshops run from 10 am until 4 pm unless otherwise stated. The price of each workshop includes refreshments as well as a complimentary home made lunch. Saturday 6th September - Eagle Bridge Tutor: Howard Jones Cost: £45 pp A step by step mixed media workshop in which students will learn techniques for creating dynamic, expressive landscape paintings. Saturday 13th September - Historical Buildings in Conte Crayon Tutor: Rebecca Way Cost: £45 pp In this workshop students will be encouraged to work from their own images of their favourite local landmarks to create a painting using conte crayons. Saturday 20th September - Old Style Pen and Wash Tutor: Peter Cronin Cost: £45 pp Students will be returning to some very basic, simple materials to show that you don’t need gadgetry to produce evocative art. Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st September Come and visit us at the Abergavenny Food Festival this year for a selection of Jantien’s paintings plus free demonstrations. Wednesday 24th - Sunday 28th September Jantien will have a selection of paintings and prints on display at Art in Penallt this year and will also be offering painting demonstrations in the beautiful Babington Meadow. Sat 18th & Sun 19th October - The Land, The Sea, The Sky Tutors: Mick and Thea Arnold Cost: £90 pp This course aims to encourage new ways of looking and creating, questioning established perceptions and opening up new possibilities - focusing on the themes of the land, the sea and the sky. Painting, drawing and mixed media. Saturday 25th October - Botanical Greetings Cards Tutor: Debbie Devauden Cost: £45 pp Students will be guided to create a black and white botanical Illustration that can be printed and colour washed to create your own personal Christmas or greetings cards.


Workshops and Events: Saturday 1st November - The Art of Illustration Tutor: Hannah Firmin Cost: £50 pp including materials Students will be choosing their own inspiration for an illustration - be it a quote from a favourite verse or a special name, date or word to create a dynamic illustration and lino print. Saturday 8th November - “Lindisfarne” Tutor: Howard Jones Cost: £45 pp In this step by step mixed media workshop students will be learning techniques for creating exciting and expressive landscape paintings. Saturday 15th November - Getting into Abstraction Tutor: Annica Neumuller Cost: £45 pp A day of painting and collage inspired by your favourite pieces of abstract art. Students will be guided to explore their own creativity using a variety of exciting techniques.

Saturday 22nd November - An Introduction to Etching Tutor: Stephanie Turnbull Cost: £50 pp including materials In this exciting workshop, students will be creating imagery based on their own reference material onto aluminium plates which will then be etched using a copper sulphate solution. Saturday 29th November - Pallet knife Paintings in Oils Tutor: Alex Brown Cost: £45 pp In this step by step workshop Alex will be demonstrating and teaching his techniques for creating striking pallet knife paintings including methods for mixing and organising a pallet. Saturday 10th January - Windswept tree in pastels Tutor: Maggie Davies Cost: £45 pp In this step by step workshop, Maggie will be walking students through the process of creating inspiring pastel paintings that are full of life and movement. Saturday 17th January - Painting Horses in Watercolour Tutor: Sheila Williams Cost: £45 pp Students will be guided through what it takes to capture these magnificent animals in watercolour. Bring along your own images as reference if you wish.


Workshops and Events: Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th January - Portraits Weekend Tutor: Jantien Powell Cost: £50 pp per day or £90 pp for both days Spend the weekend picking up tips and techniques for creating a true likeness from a clothed model. Day one will focus on techniques for charcoal or pencil drawing. Day two will focus on working a portrait in colour. Saturday 31st January - En Plein Air with an I-Pad Tutor: Joseph Connor Cost: £45 pp In this exciting workshop you will learn the skills to create dynamic and compelling art outdoors using the ArtRage application, as well as how to share and print your work. Saturday 7th February - The Ballerina in Watercolour Tutor: Paul Weaver Cost: £50 pp Back by popular demand, this themed life class provides the opportunity to draw and paint from an experienced Ballerina. Monday 16th - Saturday 21st February - Learn to Draw Course Tutor: Jantien Powell Cost: £250 pp This popular 6 day intensive course teaches the five basic principles of drawing. Suitable for complete beginners or those wishing to improve - the results of this course are amazing. Saturday 28th February - Free Flowing Flowers Tutor: Jantien Powell Cost: £45 pp In this mixed media workshop students will learn how to use a combination of inks and pastels to create free flowing flower paintings that are delicate and full of life and movement. Saturday 7th March - Painting the Seasons in Watercolour Tutor: Peter Cronin Cost: £45 pp Rather than focusing on painting the objects within a scene, this class will focus on capturing the summer sun, autumn mists, winter snow and spring rain that help to define atmosphere. Saturday 14th March - Portraits in Oils Tutor: Angela Palmer Cost: £50 pp Working from a clothed life model, students will be guided to compose and create a portrait in Oil paints while picking up hints and tips for working with this medium.


Workshops and Events: Saturday 21st March - “Contrasts” in abstract art Tutor: Annica Neumuller Cost: £45 pp A day of painting and collage exploring the theme and dynamics of contrast and creativity.

Saturday 28th March - Reflections in Oils Tutor: Alex Brown Cost: £45 pp In this step by step workshop Alex will guide you through the process of composing, drawing out and painting a picture in oils including how to organise and mix your pallet. Saturday 11th April - Countryside scenes in Mixed Media Tutor: Jane Lampard Cost: £45 pp Using your own images of farm or countryside scenes, Jane will guide you through her technique for using soft pastel over watercolours to create texture and depth in your work. Saturday 18th April - Bring on the Blocks Tutor: Janis Fry Cost: £45 pp In this workshop you will explore the new ink blocks such as 'Inktense' which can be combined with watercolour to produce dynamic images which combine drawing and painting in a loose and dramatic way. Saturday 25th April - Castell Coch in Pastels Tutor: Maggie Davies Cost: £45 pp In this step by step workshop you will be guided to create your own painting of Castell Coch using pastels. Maggie will do a short demonstration of the techniques used before guiding you through the process. Saturday 2nd May - Creating Semi-representational Art Tutor: Gary Ford Cost: £45 pp Students will be encouraged to break away from the traditional interpretation of landscape painting to produce semi – representational or abstract images that are instantly recognisable, opening up new ideas for those taking part. Saturday 9th May - Exploring Mark Making Tutor: Janis Fry Cost: £45 pp This workshop explores the use of other implements for applying paint. The aim is to produce original textures and paint build ups which add depth and interest to your paintings.


Workshops and Events: Saturday 16th May - Bluebell Woods in Acrylics Tutor: Jantien Powell Cost: £45 pp In this step by step workshop students will be guided through the process of composing and completing a painting of the beautiful Bluebell Woods in acrylics. Saturday 23rd - Monday 25th May - Open Studio For the 5th year we will be open across the bank holiday from 10 am until 4 pm as part of the Crickhowell Open Studios. There will be an exhibition of work by Jantien Powell as well as a students exhibition. Tea, coffee and cakes will be on offer as well as full details on all of our classes and events. Saturday 30th May - Alla Prima River Scenes in Oils Tutor: Paul Weaver Cost: £45 pp This course will focus on capturing trees, water and reflections in the direct, alla prima style. Starting in the studio we will then move out doors to paint on the banks of the River Usk. Saturday 6th June - Painting from Photographs in Watercolour Tutor: Peter Cronin Cost: £45 pp Spend a day studying how to paint more than just a photograph. We shall discuss all the aspects involved in using a photograph more expressively. Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th June - Painting from sketches Tutor: Paul Weaver Cost: £90 pp Taking the local landscape and buildings as our subject matter, this 2 day course will cover techniques for creating sketches to work up into a finished painting back in the studio. Saturday 20th June - Lithography Tutor: Stephanie Turnbull Cost: £50 pp This is a rare opportunity to discover lithography outside of a traditional print studio. During the workshop participants will get to draw, process and print their own lithographic plate under the guidance of a professional lithographic printer. Saturday 27th June - “Contemporary Figures” Lino Printing Tutor: Jenny John Cost: £50 pp In this workshop, students will be creating bold images of the human figure using basic reduction techniques. Bring along images of your favourite paintings for inspiration and reference material.

Saturday 11th July - Painting Water in Oils Tutor: Alex Brown Cost: £45 pp In this step by step workshop Alex will guide you through the process of composing and painting a picture in oils. He also teaches how to organise and mix your pallet. Saturday 18th July - Stone Walls in Acrylics Tutor: Jantien Powell Cost: £45 pp In this class students will be painting a typical Welsh dry stone wall in acrylics focusing on techniques to create texture and depth as well as exploring the surprising colours that you can work with. Saturday 25th July - “Transforming” abstract workshop Tutor: Annica Neumuller Cost: £45 pp A day of painting and collage taking inspiration from objects that can be found or brought along to the class. For example, natural objects such as leaves or stones or bring along something that holds meaning to you for your reference.

How to book your class: To book your place on any of our classes please complete the booking form (available to download from our website) or email / write to us including your name and contact details as well as the title of the course you wish to book. Please include your payment along with your booking form. Look out for our new book online option coming in 2015.

How to Pay: We accept cheques made payable to Chapel Cottage Studio, cash, internet bank transfers (details available on request) any major credit or debit cards, paypal payments to info@chapelcottagestudio.co.uk , Paym payments to 07935 934898 or look out for the new pay online option via our website coming in 2015. There are no fees for any of our payment methods. Please note that your place on any class is not booked until paid for in full - we are unable to reserve places without first receiving payment.


Group Bookings and Social Events: We are very happy to offer group bookings for between 10 and 12 people at a reduced rate of £35 pp. You can either book one of the workshops from our programme (subject to availability) or we can arrange a date and topic that suits your group. Please note that there may be a further £5 charge pp for classes requiring a model. We also offer a mornings sketching in the gardens or a 2 hour workshop or demo in the Studio followed by a delicious seasonal lunch in the conservatory for groups of 10 - 12 people at a price of £25 pp. You are more than welcome to stay on to sketch or paint untutored for the afternoon as well. This makes a really lovely alternative to the traditional end of term or club “do”. Please note that we do not hold any events in the months of August or December.

Gift Vouchers:

Gift Vouchers for Chapel Cottage Studio are available from £10 and make fantastic Christmas and birthday presents. Book for a particular class or allow the recipient to choose for themselves. Gift Vouchers can also be used towards materials from our studio shop, greetings cards, books, prints, paintings and even towards the painting holiday!

Cancellations: If for any reason we have to cancel your class we will either issue you with a credit note or transfer your booking to another class of your choice. If you have to cancel your place on a class, the policy is as follows: 3 months or more before the date of your class - full refund issued 2-3 months before the date of your class - 50% refund issued Less than 2 months before the date of your class - no refund issued unless we are able to fill your place


Chapel Cottage Studio Painting Holiday - 3rd-10th June 2015 Every year Jantien takes a small group of students to a stunning three level town house in the centre of the vibrant town of Pollenca, Mallorca for a weeks painting and sketching in the sun. The Villa: 95 Calla Huerta - This beautiful, well appointed villa has been lovingly restored to a very high standard and boasts seven bedrooms, all of which are en-suite and can be prepared as double or twin rooms. The house is furnished in typical Mallorcan style and has it’s own private pool and roof top terrace for al fresco dining. The itinerary: During the week students will have plenty of time to paint and sketch in and around the town of Pollenca making the most of the vibrant location and bustling Sunday market for inspiration and maybe a bit of shopping. The week will also include trips out to various stunning locations so that you also get to see a bit of the real Mallorca. Students will have the opportunity to paint or sketch on location as well as working at the villa. There will be tuition from Jantien for 6 hours per day with one free day for students to use as they please. Students are free to dip in and out of tuition at any time. What you need to know: All tuition is with Jantien Powell. The villa has a well equipped kitchen for students who wish to cater for themselves, alternatively there are a wealth of cafes and restaurants within easy walking distance. The price of the holiday includes accommodation, tuition and all transport within Mallorca. The cost does not include flights. You will need suitable insurance. Jantien Powell and Chapel Cottage Studio are not responsible for any refunds should you be unable to attend for any reason. Tutors at Chapel Cottage Studio: We pride ourselves on choosing the very best tutors from around the country to work with us here at the Studio. We are always looking for new artists to add to our group of exceptional tutors so if you would like to work with us, please get in touch. Jantien Powell - our resident tutor, Jantien works mainly in acrylics, mixed media, pastels and collage. She has been a professional artist and tutor since 2003 and holds a range of classes and workshops here at the Studio.

Jenny John - An experienced artist, print maker and tutor, Jenny teaches widely in the South Wales area specialising in reduction printing techniques in lino.

Alex Brown - A graduate of Camberwell School of Arts, Alex works in a variety of medium, specialising in oils and charcoal. His love of colour , light and movement are themes that unify his work. He has many years teaching experience both in the UK and France.

Jenny Joice - Classically trained in the highly acclaimed Florentine and Parisian Studios of the 1960’s, Jenny specialises in oil painting. Her love of nature is very apparent in her work and she is keen to establish confidence and creative expression in her students.

Angela Palmer - A professional sculptor and artist from the Forest of Dean who specialises in the human form and portraiture. Angela works in a variety of medium and is a very well respected tutor.

Joseph Connor - Recognised as the UK’s foremost mobile digital landscape artist, Joseph specialises in painting outdoors using mobile phones and tablets. He has exhibited in Crickhowell, Cumbria, London, NYC and Tokyo. His practise has been shown on BBC and NBC T.V.

Annica Neumuller - Born in Sweden, Annica trained in fine art at Folkhogskola and then at the Ostersunds Konstskola becoming a full time artist when she moved to the UK in 1999. Annica specialises in teaching abstract art.

Maggie Davies - Trained at Cardiff Art College, Maggie shows work through solo and group exhibitions and is a member of the Cardiff drawing group. Her vibrant and richly textured paintings explore the full possibilities of colour and form.

Brian Wheeler - Working in watercolour, acrylic and pastels, Brian’s work captures the elusive qualities of mood, atmosphere and light. A very popular tutor, Brian has been working with us at the Studio for many years.

Mick Arnold - After graduating from Newport Art College, Mick taught Art for 30 years at the Ecole Europeenne in Brussels. He has exhibited widely - abstraction, figurative elements, colour and light are important themes in his work.

Debbie Devauden - Specialising in the fascinating discipline of Botanical Illustration, Debbie has a diploma from the English Gardening School and many years of teaching experience.

Thea Arnold - After studying painting and print making at Newport Art College, Thea taught Art in Wales and Germany and was the Visual Arts Coordinator at the International School of Brussels for many years. Her work has always been inspired by the landscape.

Gary Ford - After a 27 year long “gap year” Gary gained his MA Fine Arts Degree from Cardiff University in 2006. Since then he has gained notoriety for his quirky, colourful semi-representational style of painting.

Paul Weaver - Beginning his career in Graphic Design at Brunel College Bristol, Paul exhibits widely and specialises in watercolour techniques. His main inspirations are light and atmospheric effects. Paul has been a very popular tutor at the Studio for several years.

Hannah Firmin - A graduate of the Chelsea School of Art and the Royal College of Art, Hannah is a very successful and talented artist and tutor, perhaps best known for illustrating “The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency” books.

Peter Cronin - Specialising in watercolour and oils, Peter is an elected member of the Watercolour Society of Wales and the Pure Watercolour Society. Peter is a very experienced tutor who has a loyal following of students.

Howard Jones - With an exceptional ability to capture a wide variety of subject matter in a range of different styles and medium, Howard has been a very popular tutor at the Studio for several years.

Rebecca Way - With a degree in Art Education from Cardiff University, Rebecca is a very experienced tutor specialising in pen and ink, gouache and watercolour techniques.

Jane Lampard - An experienced tutor and winner of the John Singer Sargent award, Jane works in pastels, watercolour and oils, creating subtle tones, building depth and atmosphere in her paintings.

Sheila Williams - An experienced tutor with a degree in Illustration, Sheila has exhibited widely. Her work reflects her love of the countryside, the interplay of light and colour being important elements within her paintings.

Janis Fry - Trained at Bangor University and Swansea College of Art, Janis has had a varied career as a ceramicist, author and member of the Watercolour Society for Wales. She is a popular and experienced tutor.

Stephanie Turnbull - Specialising in Fine Art Printing at Cardiff School of Art and Design, Stephanie went on to train as a professional Lithographic and collaborative printmaker.

Where is Chapel Cottage Studio & Gallery? In the village of Llanddewi Rhydderch just 4 miles outside Abergavenny off the B4598 to Raglan. Follow the brown signs to Chapel Cottage Studio (mileage indicated). We are approximately a 10 minute drive from Abergavenny.
