Coming Together After a Horrible Flood
Kayleigh Cooper Reporter
On March 14th all of Central and Western Iowa was in a flood warning due to all the snow that was being melted and the rain the was coming down on top of that. This caused quite the effect on Council Bluffs with one problem being the park underneath the Pedestrian Bridge, which flooded along with the Harrah’s Casino parking lot. The flooding in those areas was caused by all the water rushing into the Mississippi River
due to the overflowing. The flood didn’t just affect Council Bluffs alone, it affected many other places in Iowa as well. Some of affected areas in Iowa were Missouri Valley and Logan Magnolia. In fact, the flooding had caused Missouri Valley to evacuate which means that no one could leave or go into the town. There was also many evacuations that were brought upon other towns due to the amount of
water going into people’s houses. here in Council Bluffs there was an apartment complex that had to evacuate. In some parts of Glenwood, people had to evacuate from their houses. 80 out of the 200 resource center people were caused to leave. This situation even caused their water plant to shut down which left up to two days worth of water. In contribute to all the flooding happening, TJ has started
a flood drive to help out the victims involved in the flooding for some that may have lost all of their belongings. TJ did this flood drive with their START classes to make things more interesting and fun for the students, Student Council and the Freshman Mentors turned it into a competition between START’s. Each item is worth a certain amount of points and the START class that wins overall got pizza.

The one hall with the most points got cookies. Students are allowed to bring things such as kids toy, canned/ boxed food, water bottle, water gallons and etc. Almost anything that is going to help ease the situation. We are trying to make it so that people don’t bring in clothes anymore due to Glenwood has already received enough of them. Feel free to help join in on helping others it’s a great thing to do.

The top 5 for Dancing with the Stars TJ style. Photo by: Heather Giovannoni
Heather Giovannoni Reporter On Friday, March 29th TJ had their third annual dancing with the stars. Where a member of the dance team picks a teacher and teaches them a dance, and then they compete with other teachers to see who will win. This year eleven teachers participated in this activity. The way this works is all the teachers
perform and then the audience vote, and the top five performs again then the audience votes for whom they think should win. The first year TJ had this event Ben Tworek won but lost it the following year to none other than Eric Liebenthal. This year the top five participants were Jen kvammen, James Crum, Evan Freemyer, Ben Tworek, and Jen Clark.

“It feels amazing to be in the top five,” Tworek stated, “All the credit goes to my wife she taught me everything I know.” “It is amazing,” Kvammen explained, “I just want you to know the Mr. Tworeks mom voted for me, that’s the truth.” Tworek then noted, “I was not there for the conversation; I cannot confirm that” Over the past three years,
Tworek has either been in the top five or has won. This year for his second time Tworek has done it again. “I feel awesome two out of three ain’t bad.” Tworek excitedly said. “I feel great, I’m so happy.” Alyssah Malmberg expressed. Congratulations to Mr. Tworek, on another win and Alyssah for helping him.
Kelsie Anderson Reporter At TJ there is a movie critics club which is located in Mrs. Hannam’s room in B211. The club meets on Wednesdays after school. In the club they watch movies for free and then review them afterwards. “We review them and we talk about what’s good and bad, such as opinions” Taevier Cotton. They also sometimes go to the AMC movie theater to watch movies, which is funded by the school. The club recently went and watched “Captain Marvel” at the movie theater and will be seeing the movie “Avengers: End Game” at the end of this month. “We get to watch movies when they first come out and we get to go to the movie theater for free” said Dylan Smith. “My first year here at Thomas Jefferson, I learned about the 21st Century Clubs and asked about starting my own. I first realized as much as students like to discuss the movies with me, this would be a great opportunity to start up a club about the movies and critique them, similar to how
Last years movie club group Photo provided by: Karen Hannam Rotten Tomatoes rates films.” Said Mrs. Hannam. Hannam continued with saying, “I then asked students if they would be interested, to get an idea of who might want to join, they turn out was amazing. The first-ever Movie Critics Club showing entertained forty students and since then, an approximate fifteen to twenty-five students have been coming to our weekly film fests and monthly
theater visits.” “I especially enjoy the choices students have been leaning towards, the newest Marvel movies, old-school classics, and interesting choices I may not have personally selected.” “Luckily, we started around the time the latest Marvel movies were coming out, like “Black Panther”, “Antman and the Wasp”, “Avengers: Infinity War”, “Captain Marvel”, and coming up May 1st,

“Avengers: End Game.” “We have also watched fun movies like “Shrek”, “The House with the Clock in the Walls”, “Incredibles 2”, “Guardians of the Galaxy”, “Fantastic Beasts”, “Ready Player One”, “A Quiet Place” and others.” “It is free for you, come enjoy the movies and have snacks, we go to the movies once a month to every other month, depending on what is playing, and bus there,

then back to the school.” “The only thing you need is to do is come to a couple of movies during the month to show commitment, and save some money to buy snacks at the theater, if you choose to have theater food. That is not covered. The club does provide a small snack, pop, and popcorn every time we meet, Wednesdays at 3:15.” “The 21st century club is a state grant that allows schools the funding to be able to pay the teachers for their time, the clubs money to attend events, financing for club supplies, and allots monies towards after-school snacks. “Without this grant, the clubs would not be possible. We were just awarded another two-years, I believe, as an extension to our funding.” A few weeks ago a representative from the Dept. of Education came to visit the clubs and noted that the movie critics club had a great group of kids participating and he encouraged the thought of starting more clubs. If anyone wants to start a club, let the teacher of their choice know, and it will most likely be granted. If you’d like to join the movie critics club, it is always on Wednesdays so feel free to reach out to Mrs. Hannam for further details.

Tucker Center Classes are Moving throughout the School District Jordan Fay Reporter The Tucker Center provides many different opportunities for children in Council Bluffs High Schools and surrounding areas. Kids in grades 9th-12th can take these classes next year, but instead of going to the Tucker Center, they will have to go to different locations. The classes will be the same; Automotive Technology, Fabrication, Welding Engineering, Digital Imaging, Digital Drawing, Photography, Sports & Entertainment Broadcasting, Health Science Academy, Hospitality & Culinary Arts, etc. Iowa Western and other places will still be providing opportunities for High
Schoolers, just in a different place next year. Randy Lau, a teacher at the Tucker Center, had said this about the Tucker Center, “Not all classes are moving to IWCC. The Culinary Art classes, the CNA classes and The Health Science classes will be moving to IWCC.” Lau will be moving to Abraham Lincoln, and Rob Lindquist has a chance to be teaching some of the classes that Lau is currently teach. Lau commented on the auto maintenance program and how it will be integrated in the new trades academy at both schools. Lau stated “I believe that the change will be good for all of our programs,”
“The program has not have a full time administrator in two or three years and by dispersing the programs” Lau is proud that he is a part of the Tucker Center classes and loved working with other teachers in being a “vital part of students starting their careers as nurses, mechanics, photographers, chefs, teachers and construction workers, and this will still happen, just not at the Tucker Center.” So the classes will still be happening, and they will still help students with many opportunities. They will just be in different schools, providing more places for students to learn.
ColorCycle at Thomas Jefferon Kayleigh Cooper Reporter Thomas Jefferson is partnering with crayola and launching the crayola color cycle up until May 17th 2019. They are coming together to prove to students that it is important to protect the environment. The color cycle is available for grade K-12 around the united states. The color cycle is where kids take crayola markers and give them a new purpose so they are not to put waste or just thrown
into the environment. This is good for schools because it creates an opportunity for the teacher and the student of the schools to become more eco-friendly. You can find the bins to recycle the markers in the main office and the counseling center. Thomas Jefferson kids should take this opportunity in order to make a difference in the economy in an positive way.
women’s restroom right next to it that we could tap into that water line and that space was available” explained Principal Freudenburg. This bathroom is a place for anyone and everyone to feel like they have a place they can feel safe and welcomed. It is a single occupancy bathroom that anyone no matter the gender can use. “It was requested by student to the school board so our superintendent wanted to make sure
that we follow up on that and had a place where everyone felt safe and comfortable” stated Freudenburg. The Council Bluffs School District is taking the students request and putting a single occupancy bathroom in every district school building. The bathrooms will be put into all of the schools for everyone to use. We want all of our school to be a place for kids to be safe.
Pence Visits Gender Neutral Southwest Iowa Bathroom Kelsie Anderson Reporter
Vice President Mike Pence visited southwest Iowa for the second time since the flooding in March. He came back on April 12th to take another look at the flooding that has caused lots of damages to businesses, families homes, farms and highways. Mike Pence took a helicopter ride with the Governor of Iowa, Kim Reynolds to survey the flooding. Mike Pence visited Pacific Junction which is a small city in Mills County, Iowa where he surveyed the farming areas and expressed his concern for the residents over the broken levees. According to KETV.com, Pence said, “It’s incredibly moving for me to be here to see the magnitude of flooding that still exists, to see the devastation from the air” According to The Daily Nonpareil, “Flooding in March damaged more than 50 levees stretching about 250 miles along the Missouri River. Reynolds says 25,000 homes were destroyed or have major damage and more than 4,200 businesses were af-
fected.” Also well Pence was surveying the flooding he commented about the first responders in Iowa and how all of the communities in Iowa that were affected by the flooding were helping each other to rebuild what was lost. If there is any more rain coming, the Missouri River could continue to grow which could cause more levees to break and create more problems for residents and especially farmers due to their plots of land that could be flooded.
