Lifeguard shortage in Council Bluffs Heather Giovannoni Reporter
Graphic by: Jordan Fay
This year the city is having a lifeguard issue, not enough people have applied for the job. With pool season slowly approaching they hope that both pools will be able to open soon. The city is hoping to open both Katelman Water Park and Pirate Cove Water Park on May 25th, but because they are having problems with lifeguards that might not happen this year. “In 51 years, we’ve never missed an opening day. As it stands now, we don’t have enough lifeguards to open both of the pools,” said Mike Bond, Aquatics Director for the City of CouncilBluffs. “If we don’t have enough
guards, we will only be able to open one pool.” On opening day they estimate over 1000 visitors, with around 600 people at Pirate Cove and 400 at Katelmans. If only one will be opened it will not be able to accommodate all 1000 people. According to 3NewsNow, “Currently there are only 31 signed up, not enough to safely operate both pools. The city is looking for at least 53 lifeguards to operate the two locations.” “I can not open the pool without the right amount of staff because it’s unsafe,” said Bond, “We just won’t compromise on that safety to open the pool. We
ship with Council Bluffs School District” Stated Dr. Kinney “We look forward to helping impact the lives of area students by providing quality educational experiences in our state-of-theart classrooms,” There is also a program called ECA, it stands for Early College Academy, its where a selected group of sophomores from TJHS and ALHS get to finish their two years at Iowa Western full time. They can graduate with a high school diploma and with an associates degree depending on the classes they take. Dr. Murillo said that they had 11 graduate last year and this next year they will have 51 students in the program at Iowa Western. The Iowa Western and Council Bluffs School Districts partnership will help the next generation of workers onto their futures a little bit faster and with a whole lot more confidence.

want your experience to be a good one but we want it to be a safe one.” The city will be running a lifeguard training course in early June and will waive the course fee for the trainees who prove to be capable swimmers already as a way to get more people interested. The parks are encouraging everyone and anyone to sign up if you are of age. If you are interested but not yet certified, you should still apply. If necessary, aquatics staff can help applicants find a local certification course.
Health Science classes and Culinary classes are moving to Iowa Western Katelyn Gwennap Reporter
On Wednesday, May 29th, a press release was held at Iowa Western Community College talking about the expansion of the Health Sciences and the Culinary Arts classes. Dr. Vickie Murillo the Council Bluffs Community School District Superintendent and the Iowa Western Community College President Dr. Dan Kinney announced the expansion of a partnership between the schools. Dr. Murillo stated, “You will be amazed by the facilities here,”. She also said that there will be more than 200 students from the CBCSD entering into the Health Science and the Culinary Arts programs. Dr. Kinney said that there is a big shortage of nurses going on right now and that nurses that he knows we’re going to retire decided not to because the hospitals need them.
So by opening up the classes at IWCC to students in the council bluffs school district, they are helping the next generation of nurses get an early jump on the college criteria. Dr. Kinney also said that the building has made a huge difference in the education of the nurses that they are bringing up, and that people can tell the difference between IWCC graduates and other colleges. They say that the graduates from IWCC have more confidence in what they are doing than others. Culinary Arts student Connor Roberts stated “They are really informative and they are very good about telling you what to do and not to do,” he also said that he would recommend the classes to other people because “it’s a great program and it’s fun. You can learn a lot of new skills,” “Iowa Western is excited to begin this important partner-

Summer is coming pools are opening Kayleigh Cooper Reporter As summer slowly crept around the corner pools will began to open. They opened Memorial Day weekend. Going to the pool is a fun time, you can go with your friends, family, or even by yourself. While you are at the pool there are many fun things to do such as tan, go down water slides, and obviously, swim. You can also play games such as Marco polo or chicken, preferably do these things at your own pool or a friends pool. While pools are so much fun there can be dangers to them. Things that are not safe to do at a pool are running around because
you could easily slip. Diving anywhere but the diving board, you could injure yourself if you hit the bottom hard enough. Hanging on someone in the water is a high danger because it could cause that person to drown. Have as much fun this summer as you can that’s what it’s for, and maybe stop by the pools every now and then. However remember it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt, so make sure to be safe!

Sunscreen is important for your health

Keslie Anderson Reporter Even though some people already know that sunscreen is important especially in the summer, there are people who will still go out in the heat without putting it on. Sunscreen helps by protecting you from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. Those are the main causes for your skin to age and it could also cause skin cancer, which is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Longwave ultraviolet A which is most commonly known as UVA rays are able to go through glass. For example, when you are sitting in front of an open window with the sun shining down on you, or when you are driving somewhere with the sun shining down, it can be a major cause for you to get a sunburn. Short wave ultraviolet B which is also called UVB rays are not able to pass through glass like
UVA rays but it still can cause skin cancer, which is why applying sunscreen this summer should be at the top of your to-do list. Even wearing sunscreen when it’s a cloudy or rainy day can decrease the chance of deadly cancer. One of the deadliest forms of skin cancer is melanoma. According to unitypoint.org, “melanoma is the cause of 75% of all skin cancer deaths in Iowa.” Even if you’re one of those people that doesn’t burn as easily as others, it is still important to wear sunscreen because you can still receive the sunburns that almost everyone dislikes due to the burning of the skin and the pain along with it.

Riah Davis Reporter
With all the flooding that has happened in the past couple of months in Southwest Iowa, we got stuck with more on May 28th. Many people lost power or got stuck from all the flooding and hail. People still needed to go to school and work and driving through high water could be super dangerous. Driving through deep water with your car can cause you to get stuck. This can cause severe damage causing your pipes to get filled with water also just a little amount of water can cause you to loses control, the car to stall, float,

and hydroplane. “If you are gonna try it go very very slow I would not recommend it especially if it’s standing water where you can see that it’s not moving and you decide to go through it if you can see where
it’s moving water with a pretty good stream behind it I would never do it, its going to wash your car away and then we have a rescue situation” stated, Officer Diederich. Avoid flooded areas, take an
alternate route to ensure you will not get stuck, every bigger cars have the possibility of getting stuck in the water. “If you do get stuck do not leave your car in the middle of the roadway, try to push it to the
side of the road, call a tow truck and if you feel it is an emergency situation call 911,” said Diederich. Be smart when driving during a flash flooding or even just rain know what to do in every situation. If you are ever stuck in a situation like this you can either stay indoors and try and keep the water from coming into your house. If it is really bad and you have to evacuate your house, get out and go somewhere safe, with living in Iowa it is a rare case that we have to worry about severe flooding.
