Trump vs. Clinton 2016 Debate Nyamouch Pal Reporter On September 26th, 2016, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton had their first presidential debate. During this debate, the two politicians went head to head about tax cuts for the wealthy, ISIS, and the economy. Trump and Clinton shook hands, starting their debate off by talking about the economy and how they can change and advance the jobs for Americans so they can add more money to the American workers pockets. “First we have to build an economy that fits for everyone not just those at the top,” said Clinton, the Democratic nominee. “That means we need new jobs; good jobs with rising income.” The average minimum wage in the United States is $7.25, two out of three Americans support raising minimum wage to $10 an hour, although raising minimum wage wouldn’t make a big impact

on the poverty level. “We have to stop our jobs from getting stolen from us,” said Trump, the Republican nominee. “We have to stop our companies from leaving the United States and, with it, firing all of their people.” United States has the highest corporate tax rate in the industrialized world according to Tax Foundation. We are also the major country that taxes businesses on income that’s earned anywhere rather income that’s earned on American soil which is making it hard and a bad place to do business for some. At least 22 American companies have left the United States and moved overseas to take advantage of lower tax rates in 2012 alone, with them they are taking jobs and investments. According to the Tax Foundation, over the long term, cutting the corporate tax rate to 20 percent would create more than 600,000 jobs, grow GPD by 3.3 percent and increase wages by 2.8 percent.

“We will have 10 million more new jobs, because we will be making investments where we can grow the economy,” said Clinton. “Take clean energy. Some country is going to be the clean energy superpower of the 21st century” Moments after the discussions about the economy, the debate transitioned to how race relations are currently bad in this country and how it’s been the highest since decades ago. Places like Charlotte and Tulsa where brutalities between civilians and police erupted. “Race remains a significant challenge in our country. Unfortunately race still determines too much.” said Clinton. “Often determines where people live, determines what kind of education in their public schools they can get, and yes it determines how they are treated in the criminal justice system. We have to restore trust between communities and the police. We have to work to make sure that our police are using the best training

as techniques that they are well prepared to use force only when necessary.” Violence has been a very important topic for our country. There are many different reasons why violence occurs, but getting to the lead of the problems, and ending it can change our country around, according to Trump. “We need law and order in our country,” said Trump “We have to stop the violence. We have to bring back law and order.” Although Clinton and Trump disagreed on how the race discriminations are going to change in this country, importantly they both believe strongly that our country needs reevaluation. America continues wars each day, our institution are under cyberattacks, and our secrets are being invaded and stolen. We may never know who is doing the attacks and invading the presidential nominees believe they have a clue. The last segment in the presidential debate was about securing the country, and if the nominees

agree with our current policies. “We have to make it clear that we don’t want to use the kinds of tools that we have we don’t want to engage in a different kind of warfare,” said Clinton. But we will defend the citizens of this country and the Russians need to understand that.” Russia remains weak according to MilitaryTimes, but is developing some key technologies, new fighting tactics and a brazen geopolitical strategy that is aggressively undermining America’s 25 year claim to being the one truly global superpower. “Russia’s been expanding,” said Trump. “They have a much newer capability then we do we have not been updating from the new standpoint.” Both candidates ended with how they would be supportive of the outcome with whoever becomes the United States of America’s President. Everything was not covered in the first debate, the second debate will be held on October 9th, 2016 at 8:00PM on all news channels.

Alexis Shepard Reporter The MVP program (Mentors in Violence Prevention) was brought to Thomas Jefferson High School last year. In this program, upperclassmen work with freshmen in both educational and social aspects. The goal of the program is to help eliminate bullying and keep students on track. Every freshman Start class has a group of mentors that spend time with freshmen. These mentors help with building relationships, homework, and eventually discussing important topics. This educates the mentees on these issues and shows them how to handle situations. This year the group has a clear idea of their goals and overall how they’re going to accomplish them. Last year was more trial and error, which went relatively well, but also shows the leaders of the program what they can improve on. One thing they’re incorporating for both mentors and mentees is a range of ways to learn. They want to be able to engage students of all learning types,

such as visual and kinesthetic. This makes the learning environment more comfortable, effective, and overall more interesting for the students. Something they’re keeping the same is that the mentors play games with the mentees often. They tend to play more games at the beginning of the year and then they do other things later in the year like separating into gender groups. “The whole point of the games is just to have fun, to get to know someone in a structured way,” said a counselor involved in the program, Katie Rice. “It forces you to talk to people and get to know each other.” Another thing that may change in the program is the

separation by gender groups later in the year. They divide up start classes and discuss heavier topics such as domestic violence and sexual harassment. Mentors and mentees have both found that they don’t find being separated useful, so they’re considering keeping female and male students together as that may enlighten both groups on even more points of views. “We had some awesome mentors, but we didn’t have enough that would stand up and take the lead and take control of the class,” Rice continued, “but you want to be mixed in with the students because then it cuts down on behavior issues, they’re less likely to get on their phone when you’re close to them, it helps them get

to know you better, you know, it doesn’t make it seem like you guys are just with the teacher, and it makes you seem like you’re more like a friend.” An issue that both the teachers and mentors are working on is organization, which is really just making sure that mentors have a solid plan for their everyday work with the freshmen. The leaders of the program are fixing this problem by providing a planner for mentors and backup activities, so there aren’t any unproductive days. The basic idea of the program is staying the same. However, this year they’re working on incorporating many new things. This’ll help the MVP program reach the freshmen more effectively.

Tiana Larsen Reporter The Hedges, Jessica, Josh, Jordan and Jared are taking Thomas Jefferson by surprise. The Hedges born in that order are now 14 years old. They don’t attract much attention these days when they are out and about. Quadruplets are more rare than twins or triplets. As of 2007, there are approximately 3,500 sets of quadruplets, and 70 sets of identical sets recorded worldwide, but quadruplets births are becoming more common due to fertility treatments.

Many quadruplets contain a mix of identical and fraternal siblings, such as three identical and one fraternal or two identical and two fraternal, but for the Hedges they are all fraternal. Jessica is the oldest out of them all by a minute or two apart, while Jared is the youngest. Jordan is the third oldest and Josh is at second. The Hedges have their own distinct personalities. Jessica is interested in drawing, soccer, and dancing. Josh is good at math, reading, and singing. Jordan and Jared share the interest of playing video games. After so many months squeezed tightly in their mom’s

belly, they love and dislike one another’s company. “We fight everywhere, over everything, and everyday,” Joshua Hedge “Sometimes over the silliest things.” But they’re looking forward to the school year here at TJ. They all exercise the patience of answering familiar questions about their lives. “It was hard growing up because we have to share everything. We only have one mom and dad and their are 4 of us. We had to do everything together.” said Jared. People don’t think they are related. For the Hedges wouldn’t have it any other way.

Cami Wagaman Reporter The legendary Gene Wilder, born as Jerome Silberman, was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on June 11th, 1933. His life was ended on August 29th, 2016, in Stamford, Connecticut. Wilder began his love for acting at a young age, when his mother’s doctor told him never to argue with her, because he might

kill her due to a heart condition that she had. Instead, he tried to make her laugh. Wilder made his mother laugh by imitating different kinds of accents. When Wilder was 13, he went into a military academy in California, But after an altercation with some of his peers, his mother put him back into his former school. He became involved with the local theatre scene, making his stage debut as Bulbasaur in Romeo and Juliet. After graduating from high

school, Wilder went to the University of Iowa to study communication and theatre arts; which he followed with studying theatre and fencing at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre school in Bristol, United Kingdom. After attending school out of the country, Wilder decided to return to the United States to study the Stanislavski method of acting, but was then drafted into the US Army for two years. During his time in the army, Wilder served in Pennsylvania as

a paramedic. Wilder moved to New York City, where the actor then took many odd jobs so that he could support himself while he studied acting. Wilder first made his break in an off broadway production “Roots” directed by Arnold Wesker, which was quickly followed by a Broadway production of “The Complaisant Lover,” both in 1961. Wilder was famous for many acting roles he played, in produc-

tions such as Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory(1971), Young Frankenstein(1974), The Woman in Red(1984) and Alice in Wonderland(1999). During the 1990’s, Wilder was involved with movies that weren’t very popular and there were TV shows he was associated with that ultimately led to his retirement from show business in the early 2000’s. Wilder died at the age of 83 from complications due to Alzheimer’s disease.

Release of Blonde: Frank Ocean Alexis Shepard Reporter

After a four year hiatus, Frank Ocean finally released not one, but two albums, only hours apart. Ocean released Endless, a visual album, on August 19th on Apple Music and Blonde on August 20th on iTunes. Just five days after the album Blonde was released, it was the third largest debut album of 2016. If that level of success wasn’t enough, by August 30th, Ocean had already made $1 million on his independent album. Although Ocean has been in the music industry for years, this is his debut as an independent artist. He is a former member of the music group Odd Future, which primarily focused on rap music. Blonde’s music style is difficult to fit under one genre, but Ocean has been referred to as a pop artist. Some songs on the album experiment with more of a techno sound. Ocean uses a lot of editing on his voice and toys with making his voice much higher and lower. Other songs, such as Ivy and Seigfried are much slower, using more acoustic elements, and almost have an indie twist, especially Ivy.

Photo provided by www.hitthefloor.com

Most of his lyrics are either sentimental or politically fueled. The sentimental ones are mainly about being in love or in unhealthy relationships with both men and women (like in Ivy). The politically fueled lyrics addressed things like racism with things like “RIP Trayvon”, referring to African American teenager Trayvon Martin that was shot and killed, unarmed. The songs also reference drugs several times. Ocean featured artists like Beyonce Knowles, Kendrick Lamar,

Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, and Tyler, the Creator. Several of the tracks on Blonde (like Be Yourself and A Facebook Story) are just short clips of people talking. Frank Ocean’s hiatus has been a joke on the internet for a long time. Ocean got his fans hopes up multiple times over the years, so when he finally released everything, the internet exploded with memes about what he had produced, both from joy and disappointment. There has also been discus-

sion about the spelling of the album because on the album cover the spelling is “Blond”, the masculine spelling of the word, whereas everywhere else, it’s spelled “Blonde”, which is the feminine spelling of the word. Some fans have guessed that it’s simply a mistake, while others have guessed that it’s just another reference to his bisexuality. “Moving” would be an understatement when describing the songs on the album. The album has an almost ethereal sound to it. Anyone who is wondering

whether they should buy it or not should absolutely do so. It’s amazing and enlightening. While the album is explicit, there is a version available that isn’t explicit, so anyone could buy it. Blonde is hard to describe. There’s so much experimentation. Ocean toys with some heavy topics and many different points of view. After his four year break from the spotlight, the new album can be viewed as something that he used to find his voice again.

Abigal Edie Reporter Gift of Adoption is an organization located in Omaha, Nebraska. It’s a non-profit organization where volunteers help fundraise money to provide adoption assistance grants. Gift Of Adoption helps parents with a bad financial status who are looking to adopt spend less money. There are many

conditions children have that can make it difficult for adoption. People can also help assist with raising funds to support local adoption all across the country, in states such as Arizona, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and many more. Many orphans are siblings which makes it more difficult for them to get adopted. In most cases everything is being done to have the siblings stay together, although the adoptive parents

might not want two children. Separating children in the foster care system takes many tolls on the children mentally. There are children with critical and medical needs in the system, which deeply affects their chances of being adopted, because along with the adoption fee, they have medical expenses. Many children have gone untreated or with a minimum amount of treatment. There have been various amount of medical

Nyamouch Pal Copy Editor On September 20th, 2015 a feminist club was started for the students to learn more about feminism. In 1923, the Congress was The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) stating “equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex,” three years after women got the right to vote, but it never reached the House or Senate floor. By the 1970’s, women roles in society were rapidly changing. Women now were able to apply at higher paying jobs that only were available to men. Although men and women still weren’t receiving equal pay. “I think that the reason a lot

of girls and or guys are worried about identifying as a feminist is because people are uneducated about what a feminist actually is,” said Faith Hoff. “Feminism isn’t hating men or anything of that sort it’s wanting equality.” Feminism is an interdisciplinary approach to issues of equality based on genders and gender expressions. Movement rising towards equally for women, men, transgenders without discrimination. Feminism is not a belief that one gender should be more powerful than another. In the feminist club things like how women are treated differently, many differences between men and women, and how things can change within the school and community for equality will be discussed. In the feminist club, things

like how women are treated differently, and how things can change within the school and community for equality will be discussed. “Feminism is not just directed to women,” said TJ senior Faith Hoff. “It’s to bring awareness to for both genders and how they should be treated equally.” Women and men are often affected by people who think if you are a feminist you hate men or think badly of men. The quote “feminist hating men” been around for quite some time. Although the thought of feminist hating men has changed over time. To learn more about feminism there will be a club held every other Tuesday in Mrs. Schnepel’s room (B214). Tuesday Oct 4th, 18th and Nov 1st are some of the dates that the club will be held.

SPORTS Jackets win 52-16 against Wolverines

Jordan McAlpine Reporter After seeing last Friday’s comeback fall short against the crosstown rival Abraham Lincoln, the Jackets offense came out firing on all cylinders in a dominant 52-16 victory over the Wolverines of Sioux City West. The Jackets got off to a quick start on the opening play of the game when recovering an onside kick to immediately gain possession. Jake Axtell added on a successful 2 PT conversion and TJ held a 8-0 lead just 3:16 in. In the first half the Jackets offense scored early and often. Deziree Aguillar helped the team stay close with 8 digs, and 2 assists but the Jackets just couldn’t pull off the win. The Jackets will be looking to add another win to their record on Tuesday, October 11th against Sioux City West, Sioux City North, and Abraham Lincoln at Sioux City West at 4:30 pm.

Cody Kinney Reporter This year the Thomas Jefferson football team has seen a lot of success through the first half of the season. With a record of 3-4, and with only three game left on their schedule the Jackets have an opportunity to make it to the playoffs for the first time since 2008. “If we win two we may get

in. If we win one or more we are not in,” said Varsity coach Brant Anderson. If the Jackets manage to win two out of the three games the Jackets may get in the playoffs depending on how the District plays out in these final weeks. Anything under two wins, the Jackets season will come to an end. We hope for the best for our Yellow Jackets as the regular season winds down, hoping they can make history once again.
