At the end of every year, we all slow down and realise just how quickly the year has passed, often exclaiming: “How time flies!” It is during these moments when it strikes us that time is irreplaceable and must be used wisely. But sadly, most of us go through life spending too much time on what might have been or what we could have done better, instead of taking the time to celebrate all the milestones met throughout the year and working towards what will be. This is particularly true in business, where the focus is oftentimes on failures or goals that haven’t yet been achieved. I believe that so much more could be accomplished if we set ourselves up for greatness by quickly learning from any losses, and constantly finding solutions and innovations from which we can build our successes. There is very little value expanding from what has gone wrong – we must create more from what we’ve done right. “You can make a million excuses for why something didn’t go well, but ultimately, just fix it and get on with it,” is the mantra that young mega brand-building founder and CEO of Gloss cosmetics Emily Weiss uses to propel her business forward. It is one that I wish we all lived by – especially in a highly dynamic and complex industry such as aviation.
Our industry requires us to spend the most time on intense co-ordination and collaboration with a myriad stakeholders in order to achieve quality, seamless and timesaving results for you, our valued customers. Especially now, as we prepare to enjoy the holidays during which we replenish and rejuvenate ourselves while strengthening and re-establishing connections with our families and spending quality time with our loved ones. FLYING YOU SAFELY HOME Captain Sebastiaan Wessels is the new Chief Pilot of SA Express. In this position, he is responsible for the overall flight standards of the SA Express flight crew, with specific attention to flight safety, crew planning, training and scheduling, as well as operational control within the Flight Operations Department. Indwe sat down with Captain Wessels recently to find out more. Text & Images Š SA Express

Indwe: Please tell us more about yourself and how you came to be in your current position. Captain Sebastiaan Wessels (SW): I grew up on a farm in Limpopo and attended high school in Pretoria. I started my initial pilot training at 43 Air School in Port Alfred, in the Eastern Cape, in 2003 and qualified as a commercial pilot in May 2004. After completing my training, I spent three years flying for various NGOs in West and East Africa providing air transportation for aid workers to areas that are not easily accessible by road. Among others, I flew on a contract basis for the United Nations, ICRC and Doctors without Borders in the Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Sudan and Kenya. I then flew cargo for DHL out of Johannesburg to destinations in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Botswana and Mozambique. During this time I was also a Line Check Captain, providing line training for new pilots. In May 2008, I joined SA Express as a First Officer on the Bombardier CRJ 200 fleet. I have been with SA Express for 11 years and I am currently a Captain on the De Havilland Dash 8 Q400 fleet. I was appointed Q400 Fleet Captain in April 2019 and became SA Express Chief Pilot in November 2019.

Indwe: What challenges do you face on a daily basis? SW: Aviation as a whole is a very dynamic and fluid industry and as a pilot, you have to be able to adapt to ever-changing scenarios that you face on a daily basis. Every day in the aircraft brings a different set of challenges, which can be anything from difficult weather conditions to high traffic volumes into busy airports like Johannesburg and Cape Town. As pilots, we have to take all these external factors into account to ensure our passengers arrive at their destinations safely. Indwe: What types of hobbies do you enjoy outside of work? SW: Being a pilot is very likely one of the only careers where you can say that your work is one of your hobbies as well. As Chief Pilot, a lot of my time is spent in the office, but on the odd days when I fly, I am in the very fortunate position of getting paid to do what I love. Apart from flying, I enjoy the outdoors and being active. I am a qualified advanced open water scuba diver and I play various musical instruments. Indwe: What is your favourite destination that SA Express flies to and why? SW: My favourite destination is definitely Hoedspruit. The Lowveld is one of my
favourite areas in South Africa as it allows you to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and just enjoy nature and tranquillity. Indwe: Do you have any words of encouragement for young people, especially those who aspire to pursue a career in the aviation industry? SW: The Roman philosopher Seneca said: “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity�. Whatever your ambition in life is, with proper preparation you will be ready when the opportunity presents itself. Stay focused on your ambitions. If you put in the hard work, it is no longer a case of if, but rather when you will reach you goals. Indwe: What is your parting message to our passengers? SW: At SA Express our primary concern is our passengers, and, as pilots, our primary task is to safely bring each and every one of you to your destination. All of us at SA Express remain committed to our passengers, and we will continue working tirelessly to provide a safe and efficient service to you, our valued customers. Every night, visitors to the popular annual Spier Light Art Show will experience a dazzling array of light and sound artworks across this historic Stellenbosch wine farm. Guests can expect 18 diverse artworks scattered across the estate. Some are playful and interactive, while others invite quiet contemplation. The Spier Light Art Show is free, and guests can explore the farm at their own leisurely pace. The best time is at dusk, to catch the beautiful sunset and the switching on of the lights. The Ebubeleni Festival, a national cultural event, keeps growing in stature. The festival was sold out in 2018 after expanding from a single day to three. The Ebubeleni Festival will kick things off on 27th December with hip-hop, gqom and amapiano. Cassper Nyovest, AKA, Kwesta, Sho Madjozi, and Zodwa Wabantu will be part of the lineup. Laughter is the order of the day at the Boardwalk International Convention Centre on the Comedy Night that takes place on 28th December, and will feature Ntosh Madlingozi, Siya Seya, Trevor Gumbi, Nkosinathi Maki and Skhumba Hlophe. The main event will take place at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on 29th December. Featured artists include Zonke, Vusi Nova, DJ Tira, Anathi, and Jaziel Brothers. Radio and television personality Somizi Mhlongo, and Umhlobo Wenene’s famous presenter, Mafa Bavuma, will be the programme directors. / The Discoveries From Africa exhibition is the brainchild of two inspirational women: Design Afrika’s founder Binky Newman, whose passion for exquisite baskets has taken her to many remote parts of the continent, along with Suzie Ovenstone, owner of The Old House Shop in Plettenberg Bay, known for its beautiful homeware, accessories and clothing. The exhibition will showcase highquality handcrafted items from Ghana, Rwanda, the DRC, Tanzania, Mali, Ethiopia,
Malawi, Burkina Faso and South Africa. It will take place at The White House in the centre of Plettenberg Bay, a beautiful venue owned by Ovenstone and often hired out for weddings and banquets. The White House is the second-oldest Plettenberg Bay property – after The Old House Shop on erf one – and was originally a dairy. “We are planning an experience of the senses – sights, sounds and flavours of Africa,” Ovenstone says. “Having been in retail for the past 30 years I am constantly
looking for new inspiration. My travels through Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands have brought just that to the mix.” The exhibition will include videos of projects and a collection of reference books. “There will be an educational element as we would like to inform visitors about the various cultures and their craft and design techniques.” Accessories & Homeware Akosua Afriyie-Kumi, a Ghanaian designer and entrepreneur who studied

AAKS handbag from Ghana fashion design in London, will supply handcrafted, ethically-produced woven handbags. Akosua employs local raffia weavers and uses traditional African techniques to craft colourful creations under her AAKS brand. Willard Musarurwa, founder of Feeling African in Cape Town, will contribute his well-known wire chairs, plus new furniture following a collaboration with Newman and Dunoon Urban Weavers. This project was established in the Western Cape to encourage traditional Xhosa weaving in an urban area. Willard has supplied the likes of Google South Africa and Weylandts, while also exporting to the USA and Australia. Furniture maker Richard Henley has spent most of his 40-year career in the Knysna area making furniture from indigenous woods, combining

Gourd by Design Afrika traditional joinery techniques with contemporary design. Le Ndomo, a studio and conservatory for natural dyeing techniques in Ségou, Mali, will supply various African fabrics, such as contemporary mud cloth. There will also be chairs from Ethiopia and the DRC, and Ethiopian crosses. Beautiful Baskets Newman is currently collaborating with the National Museum of Rwanda in the university town of Butare/Huye, where master weavers pass on weaving techniques. They are creating a large collection of baskets in a project managed by museum guide Virgile Shirirungu.
Newman has also been working with WomenCraft, a social enterprise in Tanzania creating distinctive fair trade home décor. She has collaborated with women from Burundi, in Tanzanian refugee camps, to support the design of new products. The Painted Dog Conservation organisation in Hwange, Zimbabwe, will supply goods from their incomegenerating basket-making project. “We’ve also just received our first shipment of baskets from People of the Sun in Malawi and will be showing those as well. Baba Tree of Ghana, with their brightly coloured baskets and unusual organic shapes, will feature prominently too,” Newman says. She will also show a collection of beautiful Tanzanian Maasai jewellery, made entirely from white beads, from Sidai Designs in Arusha, Tanzania. Kate Carlyle, who founded Mustardseed & Moonshine, will launch a collection of brightly coloured bead necklaces as well as embroidered cushions. Nyanzabijou, a Rwandan jewellery brand, will supply handwoven vegetablefibre jewellery mixed with silver. African Images Namibian-born, Amsterdam-based photographer Kyle Weeks, a winner in the Fine Art category of the 2016 Magnum Photography Awards, will also display his work. Johannesburg-based photographer Nonzuzo Gxekwa is known for her

spontaneous approach to photography, often snapping street scenes using her cellphone. “I am drawn to the gritty, notso-beautiful scenes that people overlook sometimes. I love the street style in the CBD,” she says. Contemporary Ceramics Ceramicist Theo Ntuntwana will also participate in the show. Theo has taken part in several exhibitions at the Cape Gallery, as well as the Irma Stern Museum. His work is in the permanent collection of the South African Cultural History Museum in Cape Town. Well-known South African studio potter Clementina van der Walt is also taking part. Over the past four decades Clementina has held many solo exhibitions and her work is represented in several South African and international collections. Ruby Ovenstone will produce porcelain ware, while artist Myfanwy Bekker, whose
work is collected by corporate and private collectors in the United States, Europe and South Africa, will create charcoal drawings. Both artists are based in Plettenberg Bay. Concern for Conservation Newman and Ovenstone plan to donate a portion of the exhibition turnover to the Tikki Hywood Foundation. Founded in 1994 by Lisa Hywood, the Tikki Hywood Foundation is a non-profit, rescue, rehabilitation and release organisation. It strives to bring recognition, awareness and sustainable conservation action to lesser-known endangered species, such as the highly endangered pangolin. ‘Discoveries from Africa’ will run from 11th December 2019 until end January 2020 at 6 Crescent Street, Plettenberg Bay. Gifting Experiences Another gifting movement that has gained considerable traction is “experiences as gifts”. These make great presents for those who really have everything, or prefer a new adventure over a material object. A study by Zenith Optimedia (www.marketingweek.com) showed that many of today’s young adults, aged between 18 and 34 years old, prefer experiences over material possessions, as the former contribute more significantly to a sense of happiness. With a plethora of options, choosing the ideal experience gift for a loved one is easy. Examples include a day at the spa, concert tickets, art lessons or something more elaborate such as a
bread-making course. It can also be something that doesn’t cost much but is high in value, such as a handmade book of coupons for mom where a different experience features on every page – a five-minute foot massage, being served coffee in bed, or an afternoon nap are some examples. Airbnb has tagged onto this trend by offering experiences that are unique to a particular city. For someone who enjoys the outdoors, mountain biking alongside a pro bike racer in Cape Town could be just the thing. Something Bespoke Bespoke gifts that are personalised or handmade have also made it onto the hot list. Heather Moore of Skinny laMinx explains that items with a story that goes beyond surface value are naturally imbued with something special. “Our Minxy Monkeys are made with fabric offcuts by the Heartworks sewing project

Enter a bookstore and you’ll soon find out that there is something for everyone, every age group, and every interest. “Reading is hot right now! African-interest books are on the rise and are keeping the genre fresh and current. Here are a few of our favourites. The Amatola Trail Just in case you’re wondering what the big deal about Eastern Cape hikes is, the Amatola Trail – which starts at Maden Dam just over 20 km from King William’s Town and stretches to Hogsback, over six days – will happily paint the scene. Immerse yourself in spectacular views as you have your one-on-one with nature herself, while wandering through indigenous forests, river valleys and over mountains. See waterfalls and experience very little to no human contact for the duration of your hike. It is great to hike with friends or groups who want to let nature recharge them while getting a vigorous workout. You’ve just got to experience it for yourself here in the Eastern Cape. Day Hikes The Blue Duiker in the Tsitsikamma National Park is famous for offering spectacular day hiking trails. Walk for 4 km in approximately three hours as you navigate through ancient trees, listen to the call of the birds cheering you on, and get an influx of untold coastline views. For misty mountain day trails amidst waterfalls, green forests and flowing
streams, embark on the Doringkloof Walk or the Zuurberg Walk. Day hikes at Hogsback take the cake in that they allow you to not only see the acclaimed Madonna Falls and Swallow Tail Falls, but hikers can also swim in the streams and splash under these scenic waterfalls. Whether you opt for a day or multiday hiking trail in the Eastern Cape, it will be memorable in some way. Before you head out, though, remember to always carry adequate water to keep hydrated, as well as to take a portable first aid kit and a communication device so that you can reach out for help in an emergency. Time and time again when hiking in the Eastern Cape, I make great memories and experience firsthand natural encounters. HOW TO LIE WHEN YOU RECEIVE AN UNWANTED CHRISTMAS PRESENT Whatever you think about Christmas – wonderful, a tyranny, excessive, irrelevant – the chances are that at some point during the festivities, you will have to unwrap a present in front of the person who chose it for you.

/ Perhaps it will be a gift that leaves you speechless with delight and overwhelmed with gratitude and affection towards the giver, who clearly knows you so well. Or maybe you will open a present and wonder if the person giving it to you knows you at all. Do they seriously think you’ll love the unwanted item you find yourself staring at? Now you must react. So what should you do? The Ritual of Giving – And Receiving The giving and receiving of gifts is a human ritual full of social and cultural
significance, which strengthens our bonds and relationships. One major component of the interactive ritual is the reaction that accompanies the opening of a gift and follows its acceptance. Young children are less bound to such constraints, and are often more interested in the box than its contents. But as we grow older, we become socialised towards an appropriate reaction – learning by watching those around us. Luckily, gift exchanges are not fundamentally different from the rest of human interaction, and a core feature
of human communication is what conversation analysts call “recipient design”. Recipient design refers to the way we construct or design our speech to fit with the person we are speaking to. For example, you might begin a conversation with the phrase: “You know Jane, from the office?” But if your recipient doesn’t know Jane, or what the office refers to, you might adjust your sentence to: “You know the woman who sits upstairs at my work?” Recipient design is everywhere in human interaction, from the way we greet people

(“hey”, “hello”, “yo”, “good morning”, “howdy”, “good day”, “morning”) to the way we make requests (“can I have?”, “I need”, “I was just wondering”, “have you got?”, “I want”, “would it be possible?”). If you use the same words as a greeting for everyone you meet, from your best friend to a prospective new employer, you’re not designing what you say for your recipient – and they can usually tell. It would be the same as giving the very same Christmas present to everyone you know. Instead, gifts, like conversation, should be designed for a particular person. So, let’s assume that people select gifts that they think you will like. There may still be reasons for you not to like it. If you once collected “cat things”, or enjoyed the music of Bruce Springsteen, it’s quite possible you later stopped liking cat things or listening to Bruce Springsteen. But it’s hard to tell the person who is
the unwanted gift could be a useful strategy. But if you don’t want to offend, here are three conversational strategies that will help. They’ll also help because they’re the right way to react to gifts that you actually like – so make sure you follow them either way. 1. Timing is everything. We can generally tell if someone doesn’t like what we say to them, and the same holds for what we give them as a gift. Delays are a good indicator of a negative response, which is why a swift response is better. So be ready to react quickly. The slightest hesitation – even halfa-second – will imply negative feelings. 2. Show and tell. If you’re opening gifts in front of others, show the gift to them. Again, speed is important. The more quickly you involve the group, the more it suggests you’re excited or proud of what you’ve received. If you’re an onlooker, you can help the recipient by adding your own “oohs” and “aahs” of pleasure.

Add something about the immediate use you will have for the gift (“I’ll be able to use it with my new coffee maker”), how timely it is (“I just broke one of my cat mugs”), or how well recipientdesigned it actually is (“oh, I’ve really been after a new mug, but was too stingy to buy it myself”). It’s true that these tips involve a certain amount of deception. But as the founder of the subject of conversation analysis, Harvey Sacks, said: “Everyone has to lie.” Lies aren’t always bad. In some situations, they are necessary. Just like we’re supposed to respond that we’re “fine” when a colleague briefly asks how we’re doing, some lies simply keep the wheels of social life turning. Receiving unwanted presents at Christmas is such a situation. La conception du destinataire est omniprésente dans les interactions humaines, de la manière dont nous saluons les gens (« ça roule ? », « salut », « bonjour ») à la manière dont nous formulons les demandes (« pourrais-je avoir », « je veux », « serait-il possible de ?»). Si vous utilisez les mêmes mots pour saluer toutes les personnes que vous rencontrez, allant de votre meilleur/e ami/e à votre nouvel employeur potentiel, vous ne concevez pas ce que vous dites pour votre destinataire – et en général celui-ci s’en rend compte. Ce serait la même chose que de donner le même cadeau de Noël à tout le monde. Au lieu de cela, les cadeaux, tout comme les conversations, doivent être conçus pour une personne en particulier. Supposons donc que les gens choisissent des cadeaux qu’ils pensent que vous aimerez. Il y a peut-être encore des raisons pour que vous ne les aimiez pas. Messages de Noël Alors comment réagir dans ces caslà ? Bien sûr cela dépend de la qualité de la relation que vous voulez avoir avec la personne qui vous fait le cadeau. Si vous cherchez une porte de sortie, il pourrait être stratégiquement utile de réagir honnêtement au cadeau non désiré. Mais si vous ne voulez pas offenser qui que ce soit alors voici trois stratégies conversationnelles qui pourraient vous aider. C’est aussi la bonne façon de réagir aux cadeaux que vous aimez réellement – alors faites en sorte de suivre ces stratégies d’une manière ou d’une autre. 1. Tout est dans le timing. Tout délai est indicateur d’une réponse négative, c’est pourquoi une réponse rapide est préférable. Soyez donc prêt à réagir rapidement. La moindre hésitation – même une demiseconde – indique des sentiments négatifs. 2. Soyez démonstratif. Si vous ouvrez des cadeaux devant des gens, montrez-lesleur. De nouveau, la rapidité est primordiale. Plus tôt vous impliquez le groupe, plus cela
suggère que vous enthousiaste et fier du cadeau que vous avez reçu. 3. Un simple « merci » n’est pas suffisant.
La partie finale du rituel de remise de cadeau est le remerciement qui doit être aussi soigneusement et spécifiquement conçu pour le destinataire. Dire (ou écrire) « merci pour le cadeau » demande à être élaboré. Donnez une réponse positive qui évalue à la fois le cadeau (« quelle belle tasse décorée d’un chat ! ») et ce que vous en pensez (« je l’adore ! »). Ajoutez quelque chose sur l’utilisation immédiate que vous aurez pour le cadeau (« je vais pourvoir l’utiliser avec ma nouvelle cafetière »), à quel point il est opportun (« je viens de casser une de mes tasses décorée d’un chat »), ou à quel point ce cadeau est idéal pour le destinataire (« j’avais vraiment envie d’une nouvelle tasse mais j’étais trop radin pour m’en acheter une »). Il est vrai que ces conseils impliquent un certain degré de tromperie. Mais comme le dit Harvey Sacks, le fondateur du sujet de l’analyse de conversation : « Tout le monde doit mentir. » Les mensonges ne sont pas toujours mauvais. Dans certaines situations ils sont nécessaires. Et recevoir des cadeaux non désirés à Noel est l’une de ces situations. Après tout, dans ce rituel des plus traditionnels où les relations sont supposées être affirmées, c’est vraiment le sentiment qui compte – aussi malavisé soit-il. /

COOKING FROM THE HEART CHEF AYABONGA GOPE
Private chef Ayabonga Gope, who was raised in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, took his inherent love for cooking and turned it into a blossoming career. After completing his training at the Chef’s Hospitality School Academy, Chef Aya, as he’s now known, quickly rose to culinary fame when he was a finalist in the 2016 season of TopChef South Africa. He followed this up by being appointed Food Lover’s Market’s ambassador this year.

/ Since starting his career as a private chef, his private dinners and demonstrations as well as his work with various brands, have brought him closer to his ultimate dream of opening his own kitchen studio in Khayelitsha, which he hopes to open in 2020. When it came to deciding on a career, Chef Aya explains that although he’s always loved cooking, he was unsure as to the direction he wanted to take after school. “Cooking has always been one of my favourite things from a very young age, but I didn’t know you could make a career out of it. Later in my school life, while my peers applied to university, I realised I had no idea what I wanted to do.”

His mother was the one who suggested becoming a chef. “She managed to convince me that it was worth trying out at least for a year and if it didn’t work out, I could always look at other options. I went for it and never looked back. To this day, she remains the driving force behind my career.” In addition to being the reason Chef Aya pursued cooking as a career, his mother also remains the person he looks up to the most. “My mother is a strong black woman who has taught me everything about the world. She’s taught me everything I know about being the man I am today. I watch her continue being that fountain of knowledge for my younger siblings and I can’t think of a better person.”
Since qualifying, Chef Aya has worked at multiple renowned restaurants and hotels, including becoming the sous chef at Manna Epicure at only 24 years old, as well as head chef at Deckhouse, the restaurant that won Best Seafood in Cape Town at the Eat Out Awards in 2015. But Chef Aya also shines outside the kitchens. He says his family and closest friends would probably describe him as passionate and fun-loving. “This is projected to my personal brand, hence my nick-name, ‘The Cook Dude’. I love what I do and I enjoy doing it. The relationships with my family and close friends resemble these personal qualities – or at least I hope they do,” he explains.

Even chefs love comfort food, and Chef Aya’s is eggs with rice and tomato sauce. “I honestly could have it every day! My mother taught me how to cook rice at the age of six, because it was just the two of us and she worked long hours. The idea of me learning how to cook rice was to make things easy for her as she would come home very late sometimes, and tired. “Instead of making a sauce or a stew to go with the rice, this one time she just made eggs and we had it with tomato sauce. I remember how I was so amazed by the simplicity and the taste of it all. For me, that dish warms my heart and reminds me of the relationship and love I have for my mother.” Looking back on his biggest achievement to date, Chef Aya refers

to the way his career has been shaped as a whole, as opposed to one isolated event. “My biggest achievement so far has probably been making a success of my career as a private chef. I left a permanent job almost three years ago and I can honestly say it’s been the best decision for me. Being a private chef and doing freelance work has allowed me to learn more about what I do, meet new people, learn about different cultures and food. I believe there is a lot more out there to learn and offer the world. I appreciate everyone who has encouraged me to take the leap of faith and pursue this.” As to his plans for 2020, his Khayelitsha kitchen studio is top of the list. “It’s one of my important projects for 2020. I am
truly excited for this to happen because I think that it will open up so many opportunities, not just for me but for my community as well. I will also be doing a bit of travelling to the US and maybe Indonesia. I am excited to experience new cultures and cuisines.” Chef Ayabonga Gope has big dreams and doesn’t plan on stopping until he achieves them. What sets this chef apart is not only the success he has enjoyed at such a young age, it is also the way in which his country and community remain at the heart of his work. Chef Aya puts everything he has into the dishes he produces and truly gives life to the term “cooking from the heart”. /

/ If media reports are anything to go by, Zimbabwe’s Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo – an annual Tourism Trade Fair organised by the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) – held in the second half of 2019 at the Bulawayo Trade Show Grounds, signalled that Zimbabwe’s tourism industry is capable, open and ready for business. The event attracted almost 300 exhibitors, significant media coverage, as well as substantial buyers, including 170 international buyers hosted by ZTA. Givemore Chidzidzi, acting chief executive at ZTA, was quoted by news outlets as saying the turnout was very pleasing. The event had been dubbed “Africa’s premier business exchange”. In opening up Bulawayo and Zimbabwe at large to captains of industries and revolutionary thought leaders, it becomes significant to highlight how this city strives to offer unmatched experiences and, in some cases, world-class tourist attractions. Here are just a few of the highlights which lure visitors to Bulawayo. Expect an authentic Zimbabwean welcome, merged with competitive infrastructure, and interactive wildlife safaris. It is the perfect merger of work and play. Khame Ruins, UNESCO World Heritage Site Argued to be one of the least known UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Zimbabwe, the Khame (previously Khami) Ruins are situated west of Bulawayo. Evidence of human activity found at the site has been traced back to the Early Stone Age (approximately 0,4 to 1,4 million years ago), but what really makes this sight so important is that Khame was the capital of the Torwa state between 1450 and around 1683, particularly after the capital at Great
Zimbabwe in Masvingo was abandoned. The site was a significant trading centre with valuable traceable artefacts. Experts also say the ruins were once prestigious buildings that were erected to portray the wealth, splendour and majesty of Torwa. This confirms the legend that the area was indeed the land of kings and traders. Bulawayo was founded on resilience and a bloodline of overcomers. If ever there was a setting for business deals, innovative advancements and trading in Zimbabwe, this city would surely be a strong contender. Open for Business In terms of connectivity, guests will be pleased to note that, seeing that business travellers are positioning this city as a rising business hub, various international hotel chains as well as guesthouses offer Wi-Fi and conference facilities. There are also ample transport options. Once in the city, travellers can opt for road, rail and air travel. Such interconnected networks count in favour of getting goods and services moving, which is needed for advancing business opportunities. Matsheumhlope stream creates a visually appealing spectacle as it cuts through the 18-hole golf course. Depending on the season and time guests visit, there may be the option to walk on the acclaimed Hartsfield Rugby grounds, where several international test matches have unfolded. It is a place where many of the greatest rugby players in Southern Africa have made appearances. Hartsfield was developed by Reg Hart, after whom the grounds were named. True to the uniting, recharging and relaxing nature of sports, business tourists can visit sporting places to support national and, at times, even international teams battling it out. A CRUISER CELEBRATION To celebrate both the cumulative global sales of 10 million Land Cruisers and its new, locally produced Namib special edition, carmaker Toyota recently embarked on a Cruiser adventure to the northern-most point of the Namib Desert – to a town aptly named Namibe in southern Angola.

/ Baia dos Tigres (Bay of the Tigers) was a peninsula off the southern Angolan coast – until March 1962 when it was severed from the mainland by a violent storm, rendering the remote ’Tigres isthmus an island. The storm also sheared the then recently constructed water pipeline from the Cunene river mouth (it was officially opened the previous year) to the long sandbank of nearly 35 km long and 11 km wide. The catastrophe left the unfortunate people working and living on Baia dos Tigres even more isolated, as their freshwater supply was now again completely cut off. Still, the thousand or so souls working in the fish factories on the island remained, and ’Tigres depended on regular visits by boat to replenish its water supply. (The name ’Tigres apparently originated from the stripes formed by sediment on the dune massif on the desolate Namib coastline,
although some maintain it was due to brown hyenas scavenging the coast being mistaken for tigers.) A couple of Land Rovers used by managers of the different factories also remained on the island, and were used until 1975 when, on the eve of Angolan independence from Portugal, the population of Saint Martinho dos Tigres was evacuated from the island. The fish factories were abandoned but some equipment, including most of the vehicles, were salvaged. The Last and the First The remnants of a Landie – the last vehicle to leave a tyre mark on the island – is still on the island, but it is clear the abandoned vehicle could not withstand the gradual degradation over time and the onslaught of the elements. Much like the Namibian ghost town of Kolmanskop, Saint Martinho dos Tigres
forms a surreal, post-apocalyptic picture. Its empty colonial-style buildings – including a school, radio-telegraph station, hospital, maritime building and the imposing Saint Martin chapel standing forlorn and forgotten along a single, cemented street (it also served as a runway) – bears silent witness that the island was once inhabited. While fishermen and some brave tourists have visited the deserted island after the last Land Rover roamed there over four decades ago, no vehicle has set a wheel on the island since. Until now. To celebrate global sales of 10 million Land Cruisers and to introduce its latest Cruiser derivative, Toyota commissioned a specially constructed raft to transport an ivory white Land Cruiser 79 Namib onto the island – making it the first vehicle to leave track marks here since 1975. This highlight was part of Toyota’s tour to southern Angola. The country was

chosen specifically for the introduction of the Namib Special Edition, based on the Land Cruiser 79 double-cab V8 model, as the town of Namibe forms the northern end of the Namib, the oldest desert in the world. Masters of Africa Tracing a lineage back to 1951, the Land Cruiser has been produced in multiple variants, and its rugged construction, reliability and durability have empowered customers around the world to conquer any terrain that presents itself. Land Cruisers are found in the harshest conditions, at the forefront of humanitarian efforts, serving as transport vessels for supplies in the mines of Australia, assisting in harvesting food supplies on the steep slopes of Costa Rica, or along the harsh, unforgiving terrain of Namibia’s Skeleton Coast. The range consists of the 70-series, the Prado and the Land Cruiser 200.Locally, it has proven extremely popular with South African motorists as it is perfectly suited to Mzansi’s varied terrain, outdoor lifestyle and remote settings.

The Land Cruiser 200 is the segment leader in the full-size SUV category, with a 33% share and average monthly volume of 93 units. The Land Cruiser Prado remains a firm favourite in the large SUV segment, and locally 3,684 Land Cruisers (70-series, Prado and 200-series) were sold up to September this year. Namib Edition The special edition Namib presents a turn-key package for serious off-road enthusiasts. It is thus outfitted with an array of utility-enhancing accessories. This includes a steel front bumper with integrated heavy-duty nudge bar and headlight protectors, tubular rear step with integrated tow bar, protective loadbin skins, distinctive front grille, and heavy-duty interior seat covers and roof console. Two of these special derivatives lead the Cruiser convoy from Namibe and Flamingo Lodge to visit some old Cuban storage bunkers in the desert and the Red City rock formation in the Iona National Park. The infamous “Doodsakker” (Acre of Death) coastal track (only accessible during spring tide) was conquered.
Then, the intrepid travellers made a 10 km open-sea crossing by rubber dingy to the abandoned ghost island of Baia dos Tigres. After again crossing the Doodsakker – scary, as this time it was at night – the convoy set off for Lubango the next day. We drove the spectacular Serra da Leba pass, a high mountain pass at an elevation of 1,845 m and one of the most famous hairpin roads in the world. Legend has it the pass, built in 1970, was designed by a Portuguese woman who died after she viewed it on the very day the project was finished. Since then, it has been the scene of many road fatalities, leading to the long-assigned name “the beautiful precipice”. After this amazing celebratory tour, it was clear that southern Angola, particularly the coastal region and the northern reaches of the Namib, is certainly worth a visit. The age-old rock formations are absolutely spectacular, the Welwitschias huge and the vistas unforgettable. And to ensure you enjoy a trouble-free journey over some of the roughest terrain imaginable, take a Cruiser. /

A LOOK AT THE INTERNATIONAL PROPERTY MARKET Emigration-driven sales are on the rise, accounting for 14.2% of all sales in the first quarter of 2019, according to the FNB Estate Agents Survey. American company Pew Research revealed that the most popular destination for South African expats was the United Kingdom, with a total of 210,000 living there in 2017. This was closely followed by 190,000 South African expats living in Australia and a further 100,000 living in American states.

/ “Emigrating is a bold step to take. If you are planning on purchasing property when you reach your destination, I would encourage you to do your research to find out if there are any laws prohibiting or restricting immigrants’ ability to own property inside that country. It is also incredibly difficult to purchase a primary residential property if you do not live in that country,” says Adrian Goslett, regional director and CEO of Re/Max Southern Africa. “My advice to our expats would be to rent for a few months and explore your surroundings before deciding on where to purchase a permanent home.” To provide buyers with a glimpse into local market conditions in the top-three
destinations for South African expats, I asked Re/Max affiliates across the globe on the state of their own property markets. An Attractive Australian Market Sydney is one of the most visually recognisable cities in the region, thanks to its iconic Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Melbourne is another, and is often voted one of the world’s most liveable city. At the end of June, the average property price in Sydney was A$780,000 (about R8.1 million) and in Melbourne it was A$620,000 (about R6.4 million). Brisbane had the next highest average at A$486,000 (about R5 million).

Sydney and Melbourne were the hardest hit. By the end of this year, the market is expected to stabilise – we are already seeing this on the east coast – and moderate growth should follow in 2020,” says Josh Davoren, director of Re/Max Australia. “With the prospect of a market moving forward, investors are seeing opportunity now, and looking, for example, at established apartments in the eastern suburbs, lower north shore and inner west. Melbourne is one of the 10 fastestgrowing large cities in the developed world. While it is currently a fragmented market, we are already seeing prices pick up in a number of areas. Similarly, Brisbane has a very healthy outlook. Its housing affordability is favourable, and investors are finding yields attractive. Our Australian scene is one of falling interest rates and rising consumer confidence. The banks are lending, and things have settled on political and taxation fronts. Many property

markets across the country are heading in a good direction.” Tough Buying Power in the US Market Florida and California are the two American states with climates most similar to that of South Africa’s, which makes them the most desirable states for South African expats. Looking at some of the popular suburbs in California, the average sales prices for July 2019 indicate that a home in LA will cost $510,000 (about R7.7 million). Prices climb to $955,888 (about R14.4 million) when looking at the San Francisco market. Prices are somewhat more affordable in Florida, with the general sales price in Miami being $304,900 (about R4.6 million) and $255,000 (about R3.8 million) in Orlando. However, according to Chip Brekken, director of Global Development at Re/Max LLC, the current exchange rate for the South African rand to the US dollar will make for tough purchasing power for South Africans buying in the US. Costly Living in the UK A studio apartment in central London, prime property, costs around £300,000
(close to R6 million). If you’re really lucky, this might also afford you a onebedroom flat. Many prefer to purchase property on the outskirts of town and commute into the city. For example, areas such as Watford offer better value for money but are within 20 minutes of the city by train. “For the prime central London market, invest in smaller properties, such as one or two bedrooms rather than larger properties – that would be my advice at present. Don’t be frightened to go a little out of the centre of the city as there are very good yields to be had from areas that are easily commutable,” says Roger Collings of Re/Max Central. If you are planning on emigrating, Goslett advises against rushing into any long-term investment decisions until you have a more thorough understanding of the local property market. “I would recommend that you speak to a realestate advisor who has global connections and can put you in touch with somebody who knows more about the local market.” For more information, please visit www.remax.co.za. /

Isaac Diutioleng Cabin Crew Instructor What was your very first flight like? I would rather tell you about my first flight on SA Express, as it is the one that has had the most significant impact on my life thus far. It was 2013 and I was on my way from Johannesburg to Cape Town for an interview at SA Express, for the position of a cabin crew member. The rigorous process started with a swimming assessment, a panel interview, and a medical assessment. By the grace of God I got accepted into the training programme and my life has never been the same since. I got to meet my wife here at SA Express and I am now the head of cabin training. Where are your favourite destinations to travel to? Coastal areas are my favourite destinations as they, for me at least, are an indication that there is a Creator who loves us so unconditionally, that He would give us such beautiful natural wonders to behold. I think I would like to retire at the coast. What do you love most about your job? My position forces me to constantly research and learn new things as the regulations and teaching methodologies evolve all the time. What’s your favourite passenger memory? My best memory was not what I did for a passenger but what a passenger did for me. It was on a flight from Bloemfontein to Cape Town and Prince Harry (yes, the one and only Duke of Sussex) was on my flight and he shook my hand. What that seemingly insignificant gesture did for me was to reaffirm that anything is possible, and I have not lost that belief ever since. What’s one tip you would like to give passengers for a better flying experience? Listen to the cabin crew, as what they ask of you or tell you to do is regulated. What do you love most about flying? It gives you an opportunity to engage with people that you would otherwise not have had the privilege or opportunity to engage with, like presidents of countries, drivers of industries, sportspeople and, last but not least, ordinary passengers whose life stories have the potential to change you for the better. /

Remain seated As a safety precaution, passengers are requested to remain seated with seatbelts fastened after the aircraft has landed, until the seatbelt sign has been switched off by the captain. Portable electronic equipment The use of personal electronic devices domestic and regional flights on the Q400. Passengers will be permitted cell phones, e-readers and electronic
(PED’s) will apply to all CRJ700/200 and DH8 to use PED’s such as tablets in flight-mode.
Cellular telephones Cellular telephones may be used on the ground while passenger doors are open. Cellular telephones, smartphones or any device with flight mode must be switched off as soon as the cabin doors are closed and when the senior cabin-crew member makes an announcement on the publicaddress system. Laptop computers Laptops with CD ROM and DVD drive, handheld calculators, electric shavers and portable personal listening devices may not be used on the ground during taxi but may be used during the flight when the seatbelt signs are switched off and with permission from the captain. Should circumstances dictate otherwise, a public-address announcement cancelling this concession will be made by a crew member. Prohibited equipment Portable printers, laser pointers, video equipment, CB/AM/FM/FHF/ satellite receivers, two-way radios, compact disc and mini-disc players, scanners, remote-controlled toys and power converters are prohibited for use at any time. Safety pamphlet Read the safety pamphlet in the seat pocket in front of you and take note of your nearest emergency exit. Smoking In accordance with international trends, smoking is not permitted on board any SA Express flights. Seat belts Please fasten your seat belt whenever the seat belt signs are illuminated. For your own safety we suggest that you keep it fastened throughout the flight. Important When in doubt, please consult our cabin crew.

Special services Special Meals Passengers with special dietary requirements are provided for through the following special meals: kosher, halal, Muslim, Hindu, low-fat and vegetarian meals. Orders for special meals should be placed at the time of making flight reservations. The airline requires a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to departure in order to assist with confirmation of requests. Only available on selected flights. Passengers requiring special attention Requirements for unaccompanied minors (passengers under the age of 12 years) or passengers requiring wheelchairs should be stated at the time of making the reservation. Owing to the size of the cabins on our aircraft types, the airline is not in a position to carry stretcher passengers or incubators. Cabin baggage SA Express will accept one piece of cabin baggage not exceeding a total dimension of 115cm and 7kg in weight. For safety reasons, cabin baggage must fit into approved stowage spaces: either the overhead luggage bin or under the seat. Owing to limited storage space in the aircraft cabin, cabin baggage may be placed in the Skycheck at the aircraft for hold stowage. Skycheck This is the airline’s special hand-luggage facility that assists with in-flight comfort, speedy boarding and disembarking. When boarding one of our flights, simply place any hand luggage that will not
be required during the flight on to the Skycheck cart at the boarding steps of the aircraft. Your hand luggage will be waiting for you as you disembark from the aircraft at your destination. Baggage liability Valuable items such as cameras and accessories, computers – including laptops and notebooks – mobile telephones, perfumes, aftershaves, colognes, legal and company documents and legal tender – including cash, credit cards and cheques – bullion, leather jackets, all types of jewellery and any other items with a value in excess of R400 must be removed from either checked-in or Skycheck baggage as the airline is not liable for loss or damage to these items. Passenger Letters Dear Sir/Madam, I travelled on flight SA 1770 from Gaborone to Johannesburg recently. A ground staff member called Dimpo (unfortunately I did not catch her surname) helped me to change my flight to an earlier flight. Then, on board, Claudia (again, I am not sure of her surname) was the air hostess. Both ladies were excellent and provided amazing service. Both were friendly and helpful and had a good disposition – especially since we’d had a very long delay due to a technical fault. I travel very frequently and the SA Express service I received was a breath of fresh air. Dear SA Express I would like to tell you about the excellent service I received from Mr Vries recently. I arrived at Bram Fischer Airport, Bloemfontein, with my mother for my 09h40 flight to Johannesburg. I had my son’s childhood air rifle as luggage but I did not know that I should have arranged transport for the rifle from the airport building to the aeroplane. I was quite upset. Upon hearing about my dilemma, Mr Vries came to speak to me and explained what I should have done and why it was necessary. I calmed down immediately and he offered to phone a courier company to find out if they could help. I thought of renting a car to drive through to Johannesburg, but unfortunately I could not afford that option. Mr Vries then offered several other alternatives in an effort to try and solve my problem. I explained that none of the solutions would work, though, as I was catching a flight to New Zealand at 18h00. The rifle had belonged to my late father, and my husband – who has also passed away – taught our son how to shoot with it. This is why it was so important for my son and I to get the rifle back to New Zealand where we now live. I could see that Mr Vries understood how important this was to me, and he went out of his way to try and help, even though it was my own fault that the rifle could not fly with me. It is now nearly time for me to board and although Mr Vries kept on phoning the courier company, he could not get hold of them. Then he offered the genius solution that I take my flight to Johannesburg and that my mother (who lives in Bloemfontein and had the rifle in her possession up to then) stay behind with the rifle while he continued to try to get hold of the courier company. He could then possibly get the rifle on the later flight and I could collect it from OR Tambo. I agreed and we hastily exchanged cellphone numbers. Not once during this whole exchange did he make me feel that I was causing him any trouble, nor did he show any signs of stress at all – he was so calm and such a pleasure to deal with. When I landed at OR Tambo, my mother let me know that Mr Vries had gotten hold of the courier company and that they had collected the rifle. Mr Vries let me know that the rifle would be on Flight 1006, landing at 12h30. He sent me the paperwork via WhatsApp and followed up with a message later to make sure that I had received the rifle and that everything was ok. I did not know that this level of service was still present anywhere in the world and I am so thankful for all Mr Vries did. I saw quite a lot of friends in OR Tambo during the day and they all know about him now! I would like to congratulate you on having Mr Vries in your company, not just for his outstanding customer service, but also for the respectful and innovative way he handled the situation.
