Dear passengers Welcome aboard this SA Express flight and thank you for choosing us as your aviation partner of choice. We do realise that often you have a variety of flight options to choose from, so we sincerely thank you for putting your trust in us. As you may be aware May Day (1st May 2016) really turned into a call for assistance when our fleet was temporarily grounded by the SA Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), due to a concern related to our quality assurance systems. It really is regrettable that discrepancies in the submission of procedural paperwork and submission processes between SA Express and SACAA did not correspond. Following extensive consultations and revised documentation, as well as altering our submission procedures, our operating license was reinstated less than 48 hours later. However, we do understand that despite our best efforts over that time period, our best was simply not good enough and we failed you, in terms of delivering exceptional customer service, communicating with you continuously and accurately, and timeously delivering you to your destination. I concur with many of you who have taken the time to contact me that our efforts were inadequate and unsatisfactory. There is a lot that we could have done better and faster. And for this, we do offer our sincerest apologies, and wish to assure you that we are making every effort to ensure “May Day” does not happen ever again. As such, we have embarked on an intensive internal review where we are going through all our systems, paperwork processes and consumer touchpoints with a fine toothcomb

to determine exactly where we are doing well, and where we can certainly step up our game. We want to ensure that the service, and ultimately the overall experience, we give you from the moment you book with us to the time that you collect your luggage at your destination, is one that you want to share with friends and family for all the right reasons. We have already engaged with our social media fans, asking for their feedback, and kindly encourage you to do the same. Please feel free to email me directly at inati@ flyexpress.aero and tell me exactly what you think of our airline, what works well and, more importantly, what doesn’t work for you. It is important that we understand the issues that make our passengers unhappy, so that we can take corrective action and shape employee behaviour to deliver the best possible product and service that we can. We are also currently compiling a passenger questionnaire which will be emailed to all our flyers asking for your feedback. Please take five minutes to complete it and share your thoughts with us. We wish to make sure that not only do we meet your expectations, but that we exceed them – we want to be an airline that you continuously choose to fly with because the service and experience are exceptional. Thank you in advance for taking the time to share with us, and we look forward to welcoming you on board again very soon. Yours in aviation Inati Ntshanga CEO of SA Express

Dinner & A Movie
A Breakfast of Cinematic Proportions You sit on a terrace watching the sun glint off the Indian Ocean and the iconic white and red lighthouse in the foreground, while you quaff bubbly and snack on plates of fresh oysters drizzled in lemon juice. Sound like something out of a movie? It could be, because the breakfast buffet at The Oyster Box Hotel in Umhlanga is certainly worthy of the silver screen. As well as a seemingly never-ending supply of oysters, the large table in the Palm Court groans under the weight of a delicious selection of cheese and crackers, fresh fruit, cereals, and freshly baked pastries. Inside the Ocean Terrace restaurant, chefs stand by to whip up omelettes and other egg dishes which can be paired with tasty accompaniments, including poached haddock, sausages, bacon and mushrooms. Once you have eaten your fill of the “main course”, wander out to the terrace and ask the chef for a waffle or pancakes drizzled with cinnamon sugar and honey, with a big dollop of whipped cream on top. Breakfast simply doesn’t get better than this!

Majozi
Earlier this year, Durban born musician Majozi released his debut full length album, Fire, his sophomore release with Universal Music and the follow-up to his highly acclaimed EP Mountains. Fire debuted at #3 on the iTunes Top 10 album charts on the day of its release. The majority of the album was written over the course of the past year, and includes an incredible collaboration with the immensely talented Tresor, as well as Majozi’s heartfelt contribution to the Coke Studios series, Mzali Wami, which features Bafikile and Solo. Fire is an uplifting album founded on organic guitars, sing-along choruses and huge vocal production. “My faith and how I see life through it will always be a recurring theme for me,

but otherwise I tried to be more vulnerable and explore themes like heartbreak and the loss of a loved one for this album. For the most part it still has that happy, uplifting sound and hope-filled lyrics with a story behind each song,” says Majozi. “Writing music is honestly the best thing I’ve ever done. Doing a full-length album gave me space to learn a lot about life and myself. It’s also an album that I hope will inspire more kids to play instruments.” At the age of 13, Majozi started to teach himself guitar, which eventually led to him studying a foundation course in jazz and popular music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He describes his music as indie folk and attributes his faith as one of his musical inspirations. Buy “Fire” online at Majozi.lnk.to/FireTP.

/ For most of us, getting out and finding fun does not come easily in winter, as we prefer to avoid facing the inclement weather. However, the cold does bring some interesting “bucket list” type adventures. “By throwing a little caution to the wind, and setting off on a road trip around some of South Africa’s most beautiful destinations, you may be surprised how quickly your perception of winter will change,” says Yvonne Matambo, Customer Service Manager at e-commerce travel specialists SafariNow.com. Among the thousands of accommodation offerings listed on SafariNow.com, Matambo has handpicked a few spectacular winter getaways to entice you to forsake your hibernation routine this year:

Rock Climbing in the Cederberg If you’re the active type, and are looking for adventure, the Cederberg offers numerous outdoor activities, and is renowned for some of the best rock climbing the country has to offer. Rock climbing is best experienced during the winter months, as summer conditions are extremely hot. Where to Stay: Enjo Nature Reserve, Yellow Aloe Guest House & Bovlei Guest Farm. Whale Watching in Hermanus, Cape Agulhas or Lambert’s Bay These fishing towns are all charming in their own right, but they’re also all known for prime whale watching. Every year the
endangered Southern Right whales migrate north to mate in the Southern Cape. You can only catch a glimpse of these marvels of nature in the winter months, however, between June and September. Where to Stay: Mosaic Lagoon Lodge, Grootvlei Guest Farm Lambert’s Bay & Cape Agulhas Guest House Breathtaking Scenery Along the Wild Coast This rural part of the Eastern Cape is renowned for its breathtaking scenery and untouched beaches. While beautiful all year round, the summer months are often hampered by the summer rainfall pattern,
which can put the brakes on outdoor activities such as hiking and also dampen the view. Despite the rainy weather, though, tourists flock to the Wild Coast in summer, which may not be ideal if you’re after a more tranquil experience. If you want to take in the exquisite serenity, and miss the crowds and the wet weather, visiting in winter is the way to go. Where to Stay: On the Rocks, Glengariff. Experience a Winter Wonderland In South Africa, if there is going to be snow, the inland towns of the Eastern Cape are where you will most likely find it. If you venture just outside of the town of Barkley East, there’s even enough snow to ski! The Tiffindell Resort in the southern Drakensberg experiences snow regularly, and if nature does not oblige, they provide it, so a good time on the slopes is guaranteed. Other locations known to boast snowy mountain peaks include Hogsback, the Matroosberg and the Swartberg Pass. Where to Stay: Laragh-on-Hogsback, Tiffindell Ski and Alpine Resort, and Maliba Mountain Lodge, Lesotho. Game Viewing Winter is the best time for game viewing in the Kruger National Park. During winter, cooler weather and sparser vegetation make the animals more visible. The dryer weather also means less available water, which drives animals to gather at the main watering holes, making it much likelier to spot the Big Five and then some. Where to Stay: Sabie River Bush Lodge, HoyoHoyo. Catch the Sardine Run Off the Coast of KZN Every year between May and July, millions of sardines travel north from South Africa’s Cape Point, making their way up the coastline of the northern Eastern Cape and KZN. The entire coastline sparkles silver, and the shoal is so immense that it’s visible from satellites. The sardine run puts on a spectacular show of marine wildlife as birds, sharks, dolphins and whales arrive in droves to feast on the millions of sardines. Don’t experience FOMO this winter by sitting on the couch. Adventure beckons, so what are you waiting for? Put on your winter woolies, pack up your car, and explore South Africa in all its winter glory.

Monkey Ev e r y t h i n g P l e t t e n b e r g B a y Has to Offer Combining some of South Africa’s best swimming beaches with beautiful fynbos, forest and mountain surrounds, Plettenberg Bay is also close to some of the country’s best animal sanctuaries, including a world-class monkey refuge, and several top hiking routes.
Text: Keith Bain Images © Supplied Backed by the majestic Tsitsikamma Mountains, the languid curve of Plettenberg Bay sprawls over coastal hills that tumble down towards the sea. Here, miles of white sandy beaches lure summertime vacationers who pile in to experience what early Portuguese sailors called Bahia Formosa – “the Beautiful Bay”. Dazzling beaches aren’t all that make Plett desirable, though. Plett’s natural beauty extends to idyllic lagoons, pockets of indigenous forest and scraggly fynbos, while rocky headlands plunge into the ocean from a rugged peninsula populated by seals and seabirds. Its sheltered waters are visited by dolphins and whales that can be spotted from the shore – or on boat trips (with Ocean Blue Adventures, oceanadventures.co.za) departing from Central Beach. On these trips, you’ll also get a gander at the seal colony on Robberg Peninsula. Requiring a little more exertion, another great way to get close to ocean mammals is on a guided sea-kayaking tour offered by both Ocean Blue and Dolphin Adventures (dolphinadventures.co.za). Different sorts of animal interaction await some 10 km east of Plett, where the area known as The Crags shelters several world-
class sanctuaries, including Monkeyland (monkeyland.co.za), where rescued primates live in a 12-hectare indigenous forest. Many of the adorable creatures here have been saved from laboratories or rescued from nefarious pet handlers, but now they roam free, giving visitors a chance to observe – with the aid of a knowledgeable ranger – the behaviours of fascinating primates, including white-handed gibbons, lemurs, capuchins and spider monkeys. The facility is known in international circles not only because it’s the first place of its kind on earth, but because the folks in charge are unflinchingly devoted to their charges. So much so, in fact, that Richard Branson sought advice from them on how to care for lemurs on his private island. Next door, Birds of Eden (birdsofeden.co.za) is another sanctuary showcasing a dazzling array of feathered life in a giant enclosed dome. Various living conditions are simulated in the largest free-flight aviary in the world, protecting around 3,500 birds. Here, you wander unguided, at times virtually suspended mid-air as you follow the canopy walkway with birds zipping overhead or far below. Just down the road, Tenikwa (tenikwa.co.za) is primarily dedicated to
the smaller wild cats such as caracal, leopard, cheetah, African wildcat and serval, as well as other rescued and orphaned animals. An hour-long tour takes you into the animal enclosures, and if they are in the mood, you can interact with them. Rescued penguins and seabirds also receive shelter here, and there’s a walkway overlooking an open area where meerkat play out their daily soap opera. On the N2, you’ll spot signs for Lawnwood Snake Sanctuary (lawnwoodsnakesanctuary. co.za), which is a great place if you have children keen on touching pythons and the like, and also nearby is Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary (jukani.co.za), where the rescued large predators include pumas, jaguars and white lions. Once you’ve had all the beasts and birds you can handle, you won’t want to miss the turnoff to Bramon (bramonwines.co.za), the grape-growing estate that kickstarted Plett’s wine industry. Recognising climactic similarities with parts of New Zealand where exceptional wines have a long history, Peter Thorpe planted the first experimental vines on his farm here in 2000. Within a decade, Bramon was producing an award-
Indwe

winning MCC, the country’s only 100 % Sauvignon Blanc Cap Classique. There are now around 20 wine growers in the area, mostly operating as boutique cellars on an intimate scale, and producing formidable vintages that lend legitimacy to one of the world’s youngest wine regions, officially in operation only since 2005. In Harkerville, on the western side of Plett, you can catch one of three daily birds of prey flying displays at Radical Raptors (radicalraptors.co.za), a rehabilitation centre for injured birds of prey. Flying sessions involve several non-releasable birds (including a jackal buzzard, African goshawk, and spotted eagle owl), that you’re unlikely to see at such close quarters – never mind perched on your very own gloved fist. To mix wildlife-spotting with a leg-

stretch, you can go hiking along the coastline trails within Robberg Nature Reserve (capenature.co.za). On this wild, protected peninsula, you can walk all the way to The Point to see roosting gannets, terns and cormorants. Meanwhile, on the Witsand Circuit, you can gawp at Cape fur seals flopping about on the rocks below. At the bottom of the immense Witsand dune, there’s a glorious beach connected to a big rock – The Island – just offshore. There are rock pools nearby, and seldom a soul in sight. Just outside Plett, the Harkerville Forest section of Garden Route National Park (sanparks.org.za) comprises 8,500 hectares of indigenous forest with some of the loveliest walks in the country. For hikers, the hugely popular Harkerville Trail covers

24 km over two days, passing through pristine coastal fynbos, with views of the ocean and incredible bird life, including Knysna loeries, forest buzzards and pied kingfishers. Shorter hikes include the Kranshoek Walk, while a 2 km trail through the Garden of Eden takes about 20 minutes. Another way to soak up Plett’s natural, gentler rhythms is to sign up for the twoday Whiskey Creek Overnight Canoe Trail (capenature.co.za). This unguided paddling adventure takes you up the Keurbooms River, floating through the untouched vegetation of the Keurbooms River Nature Reserve. After paddling upstream for 7 km, you spend the night in a ten-person self-catering cabin surrounded by nothing but nature.
Decadent Digs • Kurland (kurland.co.za) is the country’s premier polo destination – a huge country estate where you’re surrounded by paddocks, polo fields, and duck-filled dams. • Set on the Bitou River, Emily Moon River Lodge (emilymoon.co.za) combines a gorgeous location with handsome Indo-Afrochic décor. • Tsala Treetops Lodge (hunterhotels.com) is beautifully decorated with tribal artefacts and African antiques, and its glass and timber “tree house” rooms offer wonderful views. • The century-old converted farmhouse at Hunter’s Country House (hunterhotels.com) is filled with bulging bookshelves, oil paintings of country scenes, and the sweet aroma of the previous evening’s fires. Its private cottages are set in manicured gardens. • The Plettenberg (plettenberg.com) is close to the sea and the fanciest hotel in town. There’s a spa, two exclusive-use villas, and a rim flow pool facing the surf. • With its quirky, romantic décor, The Grand (thegrand.co.za) is among the most relaxed and appealing places in town.
Great Grub • The tapas-in-the-vineyards restaurant at Bramon Wines dishes up various mezze-style plates along with freshly baked bread, cheese platters, and coastal oysters served with MCC sorbet. • Grand Café (grandafrica.com) is known for its eclectic retro décor, elegant bohemian atmosphere, free-flowing drinks, and uplevel comfort food. • Set in a former fisherman’s cottage, with low ceilings and uneven whitewashed walls, Nguni (nguni-restaurant.co.za) offers a slight twist on traditional South African dishes such, as bobotie spring rolls and chicken bunny chow. • Emily’s (emilymoon.co.za) is set on a deck overlooking the Bitou River. Expect such eclectic options as onion samoosas or peach cider braised pork belly. • Zinzi (zinzi.hunterhotels.com) serves bistro-style fusion food overlooking the leafy grounds at Tsala Treetops. Arrive in time for sunset drinks so you can appreciate the setting. • The owner of Ristorante Enrico (enricorestaurant. co.za) on Keurbooms beach has his own boat, ensuring the freshest seafood in town.

“Black Major was launched on the back of seven years’ experience managing the band Freshlyground, one of the most successful South African bands of all time,” says Spanoudi. “After seven years, over 400 shows worldwide, sharing stages with the likes of BB King, Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin to a name a few, four albums, and a global number one hit collaborating with Shakira for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, it was time to use this experience to work with other artists looking to make a difference in the South African global music industry map.” Thanks to a wealth of industry knowledge, with word-of-mouth marketing making a huge impact, Spanoudi and the Black Major team are now working with numerous other artists.
Indwe: How many artists does Black Major currently represent? Sevi Spanoudi (SS): We currently represent Abdullah Ibrahim, DJ Lag, Sibot, John Wizards, Aero Manyelo, Beatenberg, Christian Tiger School, Bongeziwe Mabandla and Felix Laband. So, that is exclusive management of nine artists. We also do bookings for Card On Spokes, Zaki Ibrahim, Fever Trails, Alice Phoebe Lou, and BCUC (Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness).

Indwe: Among the many gigs, tours and festivals – international and local – which have been highlights for you? SS: There have been way too many highlights over the years... Having an artist on the same stage as Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin, winning over 20 SAMA Awards with artists we have represented over time, platinum records, gold records, meeting Nelson Mandela and “Arch” Desmond Tutu, and hearing Abdullah Ibrahim’s stories about John Coltrane, District Six, and the Chelsea Hotel. Most importantly, witnessing the changes in South Africa during this ten year period through the “lens of music” has been an amazing experience. Indwe: What are the various elements involved in producing local content of an international standard? SS: The world is looking at Africa now. It is happening in music, fashion, film, and photography. We are in a position to create new narratives, because we have the world’s attention right now, which is very different to what we had even three to five years ago. In order to compete in that space we need to be delivering on the same level. Speaking to South Africa specifically, making a living as an artist is very difficult.
Support from Government institutions is almost non-existent on an individual level. As a result, artists are limited in their ability to practice their craft constantly and get to that next level. Some of what we do here at Black Major is assist artists in the very early development phases of their careers to make a living from music, so they can focus on that!
Indwe: What needs to happen in order for the local scene to keep up with the interest that the international market is currently showing in South Africa? Aaron Peters (from Black Major): The business side’s growth of the music industry is not on a par with the growth of the artists. There are not enough managers, agents, booking agents, and journalists who are actively seeking out opportunities locally and internationally and providing platforms for artists. Being based in South Africa does mean we have to work a little bit harder than the rest. Sure, everything is possible online in terms of communication, but having face-to-face meetings and relationships with key people based in places such as London, LA, and New York takes a little bit more time. And it is expensive too. In our view, this is the place where Government can step in and

hold our hand – small budgets that are accountable can make a big difference in launching an artist’s career. It is also in the artist’s interest to seek out opportunities, rather than wait for things to fall in their lap, or expect hand-outs.
Indwe: What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2016? SS: Tons of projects – actually too many to mention here, but here are some highlights: • Two shows with Abdullah Ibrahim and Hugh Masekela on 15th and 16th June at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg. They are performing a tribute to The Jazz Epistles. This will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these two legends on stage together. The Jazz Epistles were the first black jazz band to be recorded in South Africa. Bra Hugh and Abdullah were both members of it, and this reunion comes 55 years later. • Beatenberg playing in Hyde Park, London, alongside Mumford & Sons. • Bongeziwe Mabandla’s album Mangaliso will be released by the end of the year. • The launch of DJ Lag’s career internationally. This is a young boy from
Clermont in Durban, pioneering (the musical genre) gqom, which is blowing up internationally. • Christian Tiger School’s multimedia art installation, which is unlike anything we have seen in recent years in South Africa.
• MUTANT, our new film directed by Spoek Mathambo and Lebogang Rasethaba, will also be coming out.

If there’s one thing that Port Elizabeth doesn’t lack – after the wind, that is – it’s trees. From young coastal forest with roots clawing ever deeper into the slowly shifting dunes, to granddaddy-old growth clusters in the area’s valleys and mountains, these trees are witnesses to many of the years of our country’s history. The forests outside Port Elizabeth are criss-crossed with mountain bike and hiking trails, dotted with camp sites and viewpoints, and ring with the calls of birds. Pack your hiking boots and walking stick, because there are few better places to explore for an afternoon stroll or multi-day expedition. If you head west out of town on the N2, take Seaview Road, and then follow your nose for a few kilometres, you’ll come to the Island Nature Reserve. At just 480
hectares, what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in punch. This indigenous coastal forest is home to gorgeous white milkwood, Outeniqua yellowwood, and white and hard pear trees, which can be seen as you traverse five different trails, ranging in length from 900 m to 7.6 km. The reserve is home to rich birdlife, as well as vervet monkey, blue duiker, bushbuck, bush pig and caracal, so tread quietly and you might see something special. A stone’s throw to the west is Maitland Local Authority Nature Reserve, which has three trails which take in the reserve’s rehabilitated coastal dune forest, comprising wild olive, white milkwood, Cape cranberry, Outeniqua yellowwood and spike thorn trees. All three trails make use of an old wagon trail as their first
leg – the wagon trail was used to access various lead mines, which in fact proved to be some of the earliest attempts at mining in the Cape Colony. The trails are 3, 4 and 9 km in length and boast some stunning views. The 4 km trail (called the Igolomi Trail) passes through the thickest sections of forest – keep your eyes peeled for Knysna lourie, Southern boubou and greater double-collared sunbirds. If you join the R72 east of Port Elizabeth and head to the town of Alexandria, you’ll be in the right spot to explore the Woody Cape Nature Reserve (now part of the Addo Elephant National Park), which incorporates the Alexandria State Forest, known as Langebos to the locals. This pristine Afromontane forest borders the phenomenal Alexandria Dune Field, and is

home to coral, yellowwood and milkwood trees. The two-day Alexandria Hiking Trail overnights in huts set into the forest, and traverses sections of dune and lush forest, for an invigorating and fascinating adventure. Make sure to look up as you walk along – there is fantastic birdlife in the forest. As the name suggests, Van Stadens Wild Flower Reserve is home to some amazing floral life – including proteas, ericas and ground orchids – but its indigenous forest is pretty spectacular too. Bisected by the N2 about 35 km to the west of Port Elizabeth, the reserve has a number of hiking trails and gravel roads perfect for novice mountain bikers to get to grips with the sport. If you’re on foot, the Forest Walk takes hikers on a 4.5 km circular route through the Van Stadens River forest, where you can see the Cape wing-nut and rare Cape starchestnut, and if you’re lucky, you might also spot the endangered Smith’s dwarf chameleon and Hewitt’s ghost frog. Bring along your binoculars, as some 170 bird species have been recorded in the park, as well as your picnic basket so you can make
use of the picnic and braai areas. To the north of Van Stadens Wild Flower Reserve is the massive Longmore State Forest, comprising predominantly pine plantations criss-crossed by a staggering number of gravel roads and single tracks perfect for hardcore mountain bikers. It’s so hardcore, in fact, that it’s best to stick to the main roads or ride with someone who knows the routes well in order to avoid getting lost. Permits are required and are available at Cyclo Pro in Port Elizabeth. No discussion about the merits of the area’s forests is complete without mentioning Addo Elephant National Park. While the park has been expanded to include separate sites – such as Woody Cape Nature Reserve and a marine reserve – the park proper is spectacular in itself, particularly the Zuurberg Mountains in the north. Crisscross Adventures offer a full day guided hike through the Zuurberg Mountains, where you can enjoy the lush, green forest, amazing views, waterfalls, streams, and bird and animal life, and take a dip in a mountain pool.

long.

In 2012, BP was forced to pay $4.5 billion in fines and other fees – the largest settlement of its kind – as a consequence of 2010’s Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. The images of oil-slicked and dead marine-life, and the fire on the oil-rig itself, left an indelible mark on the memories of those who witnessed the disaster. Here in South Africa we have not been spared. The first large oil spill that affected our coastline was near Cape Town in 1994 and led to the deaths of thousands of seabirds. More recently, in June 2000, the MV Treasure ran aground and some 1,300 tons of oil endangered our coastline. That spill, classified as South Africa’s worst environmental disaster, led to more than 20,000 of the endangered African Penguin being covered in oil, and more than 2,000 dying. South Africans rallied en-masse to donate or volunteer in efforts to capture and clean oiled penguins, and limit whatever damage they could. On a broader scale, local and global reactions to these kinds of disasters shows just how deeply we are starting to value our oceans.
50/
Indwe
One unfortunate downside, however, is that our focus on these high-profile incidents allows us to either ignore or be ignorant of how imperilled our oceans are on a daily basis. Industrial actions like overfishing, deep-sea mining, or oil spills, but also our own unwitting actions, are causing as much potential damage to our life-giving oceans. For example, even though prawns are not endangered, the method used to catch them in the wild, bottom-trawling, is known to be massively destructive to marine-life. Bottom trawling scoops all living organisms off the bottom of the ocean along with the prawns. As much as 75 % of these captured creatures are then thrown back into the ocean, either dead or dying. This has led to prawns being placed in the “Orange – Think Twice” category of seafood by the Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI). As SASSI explains, amongst other reasons, a species can end up in this category “because the fishing or farming method poses harm to the environment”. However, governments, to their
credit, are doing some work to assist in safeguarding our oceans. In February 2016, South African Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa announced the intention to create a network of 22 new proposed Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Once legislated, the network will create about 70,000 km² of protected marine area. To provide breeding grounds for fish and refuge for endangered species such as turtles, MPAs are a tool that governments can deploy to restrict fishing practices or declare “no-take zones”. In the US, laws – which will come into effect in July 2017 – have been passed to ban microbeads. Microbeads are another example of how we unwittingly endanger our oceans. These tiny plastic particles are commonly found as exfoliants in our cosmetic products or toothpastes. They are now being banned because research shows that microbeads, which fish mistake for food, not only endanger marine life, but humans as well. The pellets can harbour dangerous chemicals that potentially cause problems in the food chain, and our food supply.
More About Relate Proceeds from the sale of each Relate Bracelet support not only the relevant causes, but also seniors in impoverished communities who supplement their pensions by threading the beads. Many of these senior citizens care for their grandchildren and others orphaned by HIV/Aids. Relate’s younger staff members, who close and pack the bracelets, also benefit with training in their chosen fields to further their careers beyond Relate. To date, Relate Bracelets has raised more than R30 million for 80 causes, including EWT. The EWT Relate Bracelet is available online at www.shop.relate.org.za and www.ewtshop.co.za. Alternatively, they can be purchased at selected Trappers stores and Protea Hotels, the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, and the Tsitsikamma National Park.
But when it comes to environmental issues, government intervention alone cannot be the sole solution. In South Africa, several organisations also lobby and run programmes along the conservation front. The Endangered Wildlife Trust’s (EWT) Source to Sea Programme is one such initiative. This initiative was started in the mid1990s. One of its first projects was to monitor the status of Humpbacked dolphins, a threatened species which is killed as a result of shark nets along the KwaZulu-Natal coast at what is deemed an unsustainable rate. Since mid-2006, the Source to Sea Programme has looked to develop a comprehensive programme to tackle some of the major threats to marine habitats and to promote healthy marine and coastal ecosystems. Bridget Corrigan, EWT’s Source to Sea Programme Manager, commenting on the ongoing problem of ocean pollutions says: “Marine pollution is a huge concern from a biodiversity and ecological standpoint, as well as from a human health aspect. Oceans are not dumping grounds and we
52/
Indwe
cannot consider dilution to be a solution.” Government programmes and NGO work aside, it’s ultimately up to the general public to become more knowledgeable and more involved in conservation initiatives to make them as effective as possible. And “getting involved” need not mean finding organisations to volunteer with. Becoming more knowledgeable about the seafood we should or should not be eating is a good start. SASSI, at www.wwfsassi.co.za, provides resources such as apps or pocket cards to help with this. In the case of supporting programmes like the EWT Source to Sea, Relate Bracelets – which is a 100 % nonprofit social enterprise – has identified the project as something that their organisation can get behind and help to create wide-spread recognition and funding for. The EWT Relate Bracelet is available online at www.shop.relate.org.za and www.ewtshop.co.za. Relate Bracelets makes handmade beaded bracelets in support of more than 80 causes, one of which is the work that EWT does in ocean conservation. Lauren Gillis, Relate founder, says that when faced
with seemingly insurmountable issues like ocean conservation, it can be tempting for an individual to simply believe there is nothing they can do: “With the multitudes of issues out there, so many of them incredibly complex in nature, it makes sense that we feel that there’s nothing that can be done. But it’s that kind of thinking, I believe, that must be combated. In doing something as simple as purchasing an EWT Relate Bracelet, you are doing something to help tackle some of the major threats and to promote healthy marine and coastal ecosystems in Southern Africa.” Corrigan echoes Gillis’ point by saying: “Eventually, our waste will catch up with us and make it impossible to ignore. Everyone has a role to play in reducing the scourge of marine waste.”

South Africa’s North West Province hardly has an established reputation as a tourism hotspot, however, it has much to offer travellers, including some of South Africa’s most popular national parks and some of its oldest archaeological sites. One of these gems is the Pilanesberg National Park. This lovely reserve is set within the crater of an ancient volcano, formed 1.2 billion years ago by overflowing magma – a fact that visitors are reminded of every time they view its interesting landscape and rock formations. This ecologically rich and vast area promises thrilling big game viewing in a malaria free environment, as well as a wide variety of accommodation to suit every type of traveller’s needs. With an area of 550 km², Pilanesberg is the fourth largest park in South Africa, and, originally owned by three of the local tribes, plays a key role in the geographic historical importance of the country. It is also one of the country’s most accessible parks, situated a mere 200 odd km from the country’s business capital, and with its own airport.
This lovely reserve is set within the crater of an ancient volcano, formed 1.2 billion years ago by overflowing magma – a fact that visitors are reminded of every time they view its interesting landscape and rock formations The Pilanesberg National Park exists in a transition zone between the dryness of the Kalahari and the wet Lowveld vegetation, and its unusual ecological richness increases your chances of encountering the Big Five in their natural environment. It also attracts an incredible variety of flora and fauna that is not commonly found living in any other part of the country, so keep your eyes peeled for wild dog, as well as roan and sable antelope, the rare Tsessebe, and more than 360 species of birds. Some of the most beautiful scenery in the park can be viewed around the Mankwe Dam region. As the dam is the largest body of water in the game reserve, it is a great spot to view a myriad of animals such as waterbuck, wildebeest, zebra and impala among the grasslands bordering the dam. For keen bird viewers,

there is a bird hide very close to the water’s edge where you can look out for fish eagles, kingfishers and cormorants. Another way people can experience the natural wonder of the park is by hot air balloon – an extremely tranquil experience giving guests a bird’s eye view over the park, and a great way to view the fauna and flora which exists within it. Visitors can also opt to join a walking safari. Exploring the bush on foot will give guests a more intense experience in many ways. With knowledgeable guides, safari

goers will learn all about the ecosystem of the Pilanesberg area, which can be easily overlooked when exploring the Bushveld by vehicle. Another option to truly experience the essence of the park is to sign up for rhino tracking with Mankwe Gametrackers. This allows guests to get a glimpse into the life of a game scout, as you accompany them in monitoring and tracking white rhinos in their natural environment. Within the reserve, guests can also dive into luxurious spa treatments and
join photographic and birding safaris, while parents can rest assured that their children will stay busy and entertained with a plethora of children’s activities on offer. Immersing yourself in nature, in an area where this century is a mere spec on its timeline, where the eco system has evolved over millions of years, and where you will find all the country’s animals at home, is all one needs to reimagine life and enjoy a welldeserved safari holiday with friends and family. Diamond Gaborone
Botswana’s capital city still has some gems from its 1970’s diamond days.

The capital city of Botswana, Gaborone, is a low-key, urban place where the country’s government ministries are rooted, and many of its shopping malls can be found. While not the first choice of vacation spot for many, if you find yourself here for a day or two, there are a variety of things to keep you busy. Gaborone sees many business travellers, so there are also great hotels and restaurants to indulge in. Gaborone is a metropolitan city, and a rather prosperous one. The main facilitator that took Botswana from being one of Africa’s poorest nations to one of its most successful was the discovery of a large diamond by the De Beers group in 1967 about 400 km from Gaborone. This propelled Botswana into prosperity. Four years after the initial discovery, a mine was ready for production, and, in 2013, De Beers

moved its rough diamond trading operation from London to Gaborone. The beginning of the country’s diamond jackpot occurred just one year after it gained independence from Britain. This road to independence began long before the 1960s, though. In 1895, three of Botswana’s chiefs travelled to Britain to meet with Joseph Chamberlain and Queen Victoria to demand that Botswana be freed from Cecil John Rhodes’ British South Africa company and Southern Rhodesia. This mission was successful, as permission was granted. A tribute to these three chiefs – Khama III of the Bangwato, Sebele I of the Bakwena, and Bathoen I of the Bangwaketse – can be seen in Gaborone’s CBD in the bronze Three Dikgosi Monument. Besides its rich history, Botswana is known for its wealth of wildlife. The
Gaborone Game Reserve was established in 1988 by the Kalahari Conservation Society so that the people of Gaborone could have the opportunity to be able to see their country’s wildlife in a natural and accessible location. This 5 km² reserve is the third busiest reserve in the country, and its residents include wildebeest, eland, gemsbok, kudu, and warthog, as well as an abundance of bird life, including kingfishers and hornbills. The reserve also has picnic areas, so it is an ideal place for a relaxing lunch. Like many other African countries, Botswana’s traditional cuisine focuses on stew-type dishes of meat with maize. Botswana’s national dish is seswaa, which is a meal made from cooking a meat for two hours (beef is the most popular protein in the country, followed by goat), before shredding and pounding it with salt, after

which it is served with either thick polenta or pap, and sometimes with morogo, a leafy green. Traditional African cuisine can be found in many establishments in Gaborone. One such place is the Courtyard Restaurant. Tucked behind a retail store, BotswanaCraft, it offers traditional African cuisine with some inventive twists. The options include guinea fowl pot and impala stew, and different varieties of seswaa. The menu also has some international choices, such as toasted sandwiches and salads.

A nice accompaniment to the delicious dishes is one of the freshly squeezed fruit juices on offer. For cold beer and thick steaks, the very popular Bull and Bush Pub is the place to go. With two bars, indoor and outdoor tables, a wood-fired pizza oven, live entertainment during the evenings, as well as a play area for the kids, this pub is a lively place for a bite to eat. Due to the fact that many tourists bypass Gaborone to continue north to the country’s game reserves, the hotels in the capital city

mostly cater to business travellers. The Peermont Walmont Gaborone prides itself on its efficiency, comfort, luxury, and privacy, while the onsite Camelot Spa ensures that guests experience the utmost in relaxation with its range of treatments designed to de-stress and re-energise. The Mokolwane Bistro offers a delicious international buffet to indulge in, and as there is an onsite gym, you will be able to stick to your fitness schedule, and enjoy all the delectable dishes and treats on offer. For the perfect souvenir to take home after your stay in Gaborone, head to Thamaga Pottery, about 40 km from the capital. At this rural craft centre you will find gorgeous and original creations, including bowls, platters, and goblets. The distinctive style that the artisans at Thamaga have developed is known throughout the country, as well as internationally. If you find yourself in the gem of a city that is Gaborone, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy yourself, urban African style.

The Turbine Hotel & Spa in Knysna was created during a massive project to turn Thesen Island into a residential marina with an upmarket shopping area. It stands in the Knysna Lagoon, which is part of South Africa’s famous Garden Route. The hotel is now a photographer’s dream, with all the rooms shaped around its beautifully restored industrial past. If quirky is your thing, this old power plant is paradise. The industrial backdrop of bare bricks and huge whitewashed walls is softened by a sense of playfulness in the décor. The machinery and pipes are painted vivid red, blue, green and orange, matched by dining chairs in bright colours. All sorts of unusual instruments and contraptions are dotted

around the hotel and will keep engineers, scientists, and curious visitors fascinated for hours. The hotel is part of a Heritage Walk, with its four imposing steam towers visible from far away. Yet there’s nothing old fashioned about it now, with modern fivestar facilities including the Amani African Spa, the excellent Island Café, a pool with a great view, and a variety of activities to keep you entertained. The hotel’s 24 bedrooms are each individually decorated and styled in tribute to Knysna’s rich heritage – like the Schooner room, with paintings of ships on the walls, polished wooden floorboards, a seafaring chest, and a mirror that looks like a porthole. Despite the constraints
of working within a heritage building, all the rooms feel remarkably spacious. Six of them have balconies with views over Knysna Lagoon or Thesen Island, and two have baths with a view over the island’s canals. There is also a romantically decorated honeymoon suite, with a balcony overlooking the swimming pool. Out of season you’re very likely to find the locals in the cosy tapas bar, enjoying a beer or a wine with a plate of calamari and chips, because this unique hotel has built up a loyal local following who appreciate its fine food and welcoming ambience. The 90-seater Island Café has a lovely terrace for al fresco dining, and an airy interior where the colourful chairs instantly make you smile. The food makes you smile
even more, and imaginative breakfasts, light lunches and gourmet dinners are on offer. If you’re more in the mood for finger food, the Turbine Tapas Bar is ideal. It has an outdoor seating area and a snug indoor area with a full range of ales, wines and spirits, and a menu that includes sticky riblets, tempura prawns and beef kebabs. A massive lifting hook and chains dating from the hotel’s power plant days make an interesting talking point in the bar. The hotel also has an adjoining Col’Cacchio pizzeria by the water’s edge. For business visitors, there are two conference rooms and free W-Fi, while art lovers can admire or buy the paintings on display in the foyer and courtyard, provided by the Knysna Fine Art Gallery.
The hotel has two of its own motorised pontoon barges for guests to use, seating up to ten people. A champers and canapé sunset cruise on the lagoon is a must if you want to admire the Knysna Heads up close. These rocks guard the lagoon where it joins the ocean, and despite its placid appearance, this narrow channel is the second most dangerous shipping passage in the world, second only to Christchurch in New Zealand. Watersports and exploring are the main attractions in the area, and hotel guests can kayak through the canals that crisscross the island. Other options include a hike into the ancient and beautiful Knysna Forest, a gentle cycle ride around the area, or paragliding from the mountains across the beautiful bays.
Since the hotel was originally a power station, power efficiency is still very much top of mind. In its heyday, the plant provided enough energy for Eskom to fuel Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. Now it boasts several eco-friendly features, including solar panels on the roofs to heat water, and heat pumps to make the building selfsufficient for its heating and hot water requirements. Rainwater is also harvested from the roofs and stored in large reservoirs beneath the wooden sundecks, and then recycled to irrigate the gardens. Experience Motswari Private Game Reserve A pride of eight lions lie peacefully on the dry river bed under the shade of a few thorny trees. One large, majestic male lion is on his side, occasionally lifting his head to look around, ensuring that the others, who are all fast asleep, are safe from danger. Four cubs roll sporadically from side to side, and flick their tiny ears and tails to ward off flies. We sit, about 6 m away, and watch from our open-air vehicle, silent and in awe of these regal creatures.
Text: Julie Graham Images © Supplied As we drive back to the camp, a young leopard makes an appearance, and we follow him until he plops himself down on an old termite mound, kindly allowing us to ogle his beautifully spotted coat. This is day one of three at Motswari Private Game Reserve in Hoedspruit, near the renowned Kruger National Park, and we have already been blessed by the beautiful Bushveld and bountiful wildlife, who are, according to Motswari, the real hosts. As a South African, the Bushveld is in my blood, and I was thrilled when given the opportunity to spend some quality time immersed in it, savouring the delights of its diverse array of flora and fauna. Arriving at Motswari Private Game Reserve, a mere 40 minute drive from Hoedspruit Airport, I was immediately struck by the effort made by this incredible team to conserve the environment and not interrupt the natural order of the Bushveld. No manicured gardens or fancy embellishments disrupt this flow and, according to Marion Geiger, owner of Motswari, “the wilder, the better, and the happier”. The 15 thatched bungalows that make up the camp are built in the traditional
African rondavel form – a round, hut-like cottage, each with an en-suite bathroom and expansive deck overlooking the bush or river bed. Each rondavel is named after an indigenous animal, with personal touches and finishings handpicked by Geiger, including some of her own striking artwork. Through the medium of art, Geiger aims to create awareness about the atrocities of rhino poaching in our country. She is also the founder of Rhino Disharmony, a campaign launched to create global awareness about rhino poaching. The camp at Motswari is not fenced, and wildlife is free to roam as they please, offering guests a real one-onone experience with the animals – like the leopard we saw that evening on the footpath leading to the dining area. This might sound terrifying to some, but the professional guides monitor the grounds to ensure guests are safe, and no one is allowed to walk around at night unless accompanied by a ranger. Expect to regularly see Nyala relaxing in the shade, elephants trekking up and down the river bed, and a variety of birds from the comfort of your room. The camp is alive
with activity, which is a direct reflection of Motswari’s dedication to not disrupting the natural order of the environment. Game drives are held each morning and afternoon – the perfect time to see active animals before and after the heat of the day. The borderless land around Mostwari, part of the wilderness that has now become the Greater Kruger National Park Conservancy, is teeming with diverse wildlife that is spectacular to witness. We were so privileged that every game drive was jam-packed with incredible sightings and surprises. Bush walks are also on offer at Mostwari, and leave from the camp after breakfast, led by the expert field guides. On these walks, you can focus your attention on the smaller wonders of the bush. Expect to hear wildly interesting facts about the plants, animal tracks, insects, dung and birds. Meals are a time for guests to come together and share the wonders of their experiences, and the motto of Motswari, “Arrive as a visitor – leave as a friend”, is a heartfelt promise. If you’re looking for a little privacy, just inform the reception and a romantic private table can be set up

for you. Meals are savoured either on the veranda, under the boma or out under the stars at night. During the day, guests can enjoy the solitude of nature, read a book from the library or relax in the infinity pool, overlooking the riverbed. A fully stocked bar and attentive staff ensure that you will not be without a refreshing G&T – a staple drink in the African bush. For the more audacious spirits, an overnight adventure at Giraffe’s Nest is a must! A newer addition to the camp, Giraffe’s Nest is located about 10 minutes from Mostwari camp, at an active waterhole. The tree house is on stilts, protecting guests from wandering night-time visitors, and is the epitome of Bushveld extravagance. Book a night in Giraffe’s Nest in advance

and a small picnic dinner will be prepared for you to savour at your leisure. You will be dropped off by a ranger, and collected in the morning. Spending a night here, falling asleep under the inky black African sky, is a truly unforgettable experience. Motswari, meaning “to conserve and protect” in Tswana, does precisely that, and the hands-on owners are passionate about the wildlife they are surrounded by. Prior to writing this, I had the intention of steering clear of any stereotypical descriptions of what one might expect from an article describing a lodge such as this. But I simply can’t. It IS majestic, it IS breathtaking and it IS, undoubtedly, a memorable experience that will leave you feeling awakened and alive. Mostwari will show you Africa, in all her grandiose glory.
Under the direction and unwavering support of its owners, Marion Geiger and Fabrice Orengo de Lamazière, Motswari launched an ongoing campaign in aid of rhino conservation, called Rhino Disharmony. Through the participation of artists, their fans and the informed public, the campaign sets out to create a global platform that will draw attention to the rhino poaching crises in South Africa. By doing so, the project hopes to encourage a shift in perception about the use of rhino horn and how it is fast-tracking this species to extinction. The campaign was launched in December 2014 and world renowned Chinese concert pianist, Tian Jiang, composed a magnificent tribute to the rhinos. Zolani Mahola – the lead singer of local band Freshlyground – also composed a song for the cause. www.rhinodisharmony.com / www.facebook.com/rhinodisharmony

Namibia’s Dream of a Logistics
Hub
Namibia is a country of just over two million people, and the current development of the country’s infrastructure (new port facilities, new airports, road infrastructure, and rail infrastructure) will undoubtedly create the needed competitive edge to realise the dream of becoming a logistics hub for the 300 million inhabitants of the South African Development Community (SADC).

New Container Terminal Facts Namibia, Port of Walvis Bay, new container terminal as at 9th March 2016. Namibia’s competitive advantage resides in its stable and secure environment, its strategic geographical position, a generous amount of land available for development, and relatively efficient services. With its deep water depth and stable weather conditions, the port of Walvis Bay is ideally located to accelerate the growth of Namibia and the SADC region as a whole by providing a gateway to the region, thus serving as a logistics hub. The completion of the new container terminal at the port in 2017 will go a long way towards establishing Namibia as a regional logistics hub, and will further support the Namibian

Government’s stated intention to develop an industrialised economy. For any port, capacity to handle various commodities is key, hence the port of Walvis Bay’s new container terminal is part of a reclaimed land project, and is Namibia’s biggest ever port construction project since independence. The project is envisaged to pave the way for the Port of Walvis Bay to more than double its container handling capacity from 350,000 twenty foot equivalent measurements (TEU) to 750,000 TEU’s per year. For more information, visit www.namport.com.na.
• The terminal will be worth approximately NAD 4 billion once completed. • The Government secured NAD 3 billion loan from the African Development Bank for the construction of the container terminal. • Building commenced on May 2014. • Project completion is set for September 2017. • Various contractors have been used, of which the biggest is China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd. • To date the project is 26 % complete, and is still on schedule. • A total amount of just over NAD 1.5 billion has been spent on the project to date. • 600 m of new quay wall is being built, with a water depth of -16 m.

If Quilalea belongs to anyone, it’s to the hermit crabs, which scurry – in shells of all shapes and sizes – across its paths, beaches and forest floors. The brave ones will keep walking as you pass by, while the more timid will quickly retreat into their shells until the “danger” has passed. As well as being shelter from the elements and predators, their shells must also be comforting homes, snug and warm, where they can escape the worries of the world for a while. And that is exactly what Quilalea Island is to its guests – a supremely comfortable and luxurious hidey-hole where real world concerns are left far behind, the air is perfumed by warm ocean breezes, and romance rules supreme. There was a timid knock on the door of our villa. Rousing ourselves from the kind of delicious afternoon nap you can only have after a morning of soaking up sun and sea, we answered it to find Vita, our host – much like a personal butler – on the doorstep. “Could you please come down to the bar?” he asked. It was close to sunset, which meant it was time for the requisite sun downer “cocktail of the day” – always a delicious alcoholic surprise – so we slipped on our flip-flops and followed. There, with cocktail in hand, we lounged on beanbags on the deck, watching a dhow make its way sedately across the turquoise blue horizon, lulled by the sound of the waves lapping on the beach below. It was the perfect evening and the perfect African sunset, but it was about to get better. “I’m ready,” said Vita. “Please follow me.” Intrigued, we let him lead us back to our villa, where we found a giant tub resting on our deck, with the largest dome of bubbles I have ever seen rising from its rim, liberally decorated with flowers and vines – our very own tropical bubble bath for two! We immediately grabbed the bottle of bubbly out of the fridge (French, no less), stripped and waded in. Finding the water under the bubbles was the biggest challenge, but soon we were happily ensconced in our tub, toasting our good fortune as the sun sank. The lovely thing about Quilalea – and all Azura retreats, in fact – is that just when you think you have experienced the highlight of

your stay, they surprise you with another. Vita kept us guessing, with almost every meal in a different location – under the dappled shade of the trees one lunchtime, on a cosy corner of the sand one evening, and for our last dinner, we simply followed the candles all the way down the beach, most of which was exposed due to the low tide, where we found our table surrounded by romantic hanging lanterns, our table napkins shaped into swans, and out butter dish decorated with a hand drawn picture. (It became a ritual at meal times to see just what picture Vita would draw on our butter, and just what shape we would find our napkins in!). Beautiful settings call for beautiful food, and with the virtually untouched waters of the Quirimbas Archipelago spreading out in every direction, most of it came from the sea,

just-caught and delicious. We feasted on line fish, crab, lobster, seafood curry (served in the pod of a Baobab seed) and calamari to our heart’s content, all paired with the perfect selection of wines, or a caipirinha cocktail – a Mozambican institution. The only seafood not on the menu was oysters, but then who needs an aphrodisiac on an island so imbued with romance? It’s also little wonder that South African businessman Tokyo Sexwale fell so in love with the place that he bought this little piece of Mozambican paradise for his own. And the biggest draw card for him? Apparently the 1,000-year-old Baobab trees that dot the island. And who could blame him? These behemoths of the plant world are so quintessentially African and the thought of everything these trees have seen in their lifetimes, so intriguing. Paths wander around
the island past many of these beautiful trees, and it is worth it to go exploring, even more so at low tide when you can mix your forest exploration with a marine one, as the exposed rocks yield up rock pools with all manner of little critters in them. On the opposite corner of the island from the hotel, you will happen across Turtle Beach – a lovely stretch of sand, bordered on one side by mangroves. You’ll often find it completely deserted, making it the perfect hideaway, especially when Vita has come before you, drawn a gigantic heart in the sand and placed two bean bags inside it, along with a cooler box filled with cocktails and snacks! Despite its name, we did not see any turtles on Turtle Beach, but a whole host made our acquaintance on the house reef which stretches out just in front of the hotel’s main beach, and can be reached by simply

wading through the shallows. This makes it ideal for both snorkelers and divers, and our dive yielded not only the aforementioned turtles, but also an abundance of reef fish, and a “manicure” at the shrimp cleaning station. The seas around Quilalea are liberally dotted with dive sites, many just a short boat ride away. The resident scuba team is excellent, and with the lodge managers, Claudia Pellarini-Joubert and Leon Joubert, being not only dive instructors, but also professional underwater photographers (www.bittenbysharks.com), you are guaranteed of memorable dives filled with picture-worthy sightings. We were

rewarded with sting rays, potato bass, verdant coral gardens, lion fish, and brightly coloured sea slugs and nudibranchs. Each time we surfaced, it was with massive grins on our faces – there’s no better feeling than doing something you love with your special someone. It was our last day and our helicopter would soon be arriving to wing us – reluctantly – back to civilisation. As we said goodbye to our beautiful villa, complete with its swinging hammock and private beach, I picked up one last hermit crab. He eyed me for a while before disappearing into his snug home. I wished I could do the same, hole up
indefinitely in this beautiful place. But then, every hermit crab knows that sometimes you have to swap one shell for another… but that doesn’t mean that you won’t be lucky enough to one day revisit an old one. Azura Quilalea Private Island is located in the Quirimbas Archipelago, off the coast of Northern Mozambique, and is accessible by helicopter on Archipelago Charters (www.archipelago.co.za) from the town of Pemba. The island is one of properties of Azura Retreats, which also has hotels in Benguerra, Mozambique and Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania. For more information, visit www.azura-retreats.com.

V I P Vitamin Up Your Vitamin C Intake This Winter We all know about the incredible protective power of Vitamin C, but do you know why and how it works, or how much of it is enough? Worldrenowned nutritional expert, Patrick Holford, gives us some insight into how this super-nutrient works and why you should up your intake of it this winter.

“Think of your immune system as your own personal medical team, skilled in the art of healing, always on call, and always there to take preventive measures to avert a crisis. Whether you are trying to prevent or cure an illness, your immune system is your main line of defence,” says Holford. “The functioning of the immune system is dependent on specific nutrients – most importantly, Vitamin C. Our production of natural antibiotics and complement proteins, and the ability of our cells to carry out, engulf and digest invaders are all dependent on Vitamin C. “Supplementing up to 2,000 mg (for most people on most days) more than doubles blood plasma levels compared to recommended daily allowance (RDA) levels. Even though the excess is finally excreted, rather than being a ‘waste’, this actually protects the bladder and urinary tract,” says Holford. Reasons to Increase Your Vitamin C Intake • The immune system depends on having healthy immune cells (lymphocytes and
88/
Indwe
leucocytes and associated molecules such as antibodies). Vitamin C is essential for both. • Vitamin C is strongly anti-viral. Many viruses, such as flu and the common cold, do not necessarily enter the bloodstream; rather, they spread in the mucous on the respiratory tract membranes. Consequently, there is very little antibody stimulation and the job of the defence falls to cell-mediated T-lymphocytes (white blood cells responsible for detecting foreign or abnormal cells). • The Vitamin C level of T-cells is depleted by smoking, age, and infection. Supplementation of Vitamin C in these cases increases the ability of the T-cells to do their job and reduce symptoms. • Apart from stimulating natural antibacterial factors in the body, Vitamin C will actually improve the performance of antibodies. • Vitamin C can be bacteriostatic or bactericidal (it can hinder the growth of bacteria or kill them, depending on the bug).
• Vitamin C detoxifies, to varying degrees, many bacterial toxins which often cause all or some of the unpleasant symptoms we feel during a cold or flu infection. • Of all antioxidant nutrients, the two most important for the skin are Vitamin A and C. Vitamin C makes collagen, a substance that is a bit like glue, as it holds your cells together. When you lack Vitamin C, your skin loses its tone and wrinkles develop. • Vitamin C stimulates the non-lysozyme anti-bacterial factor (NLAF) found in tears. This is of particular importance for people who often suffer from eye infections. • Vitamin C also helps sore eyes and a runny nose, as it is a natural anti-histamine. • Numerous studies have shown Vitamin C to be associated with improved bone density as well as helping the absorption of iron, giving us good reason to increase our intake as we get older. • Vitamin C increases resistance to stress, lessens allergic reactions, helps arthritic conditions, slows down the ageing process, and improves energy production.

Diesel and Petrol sales in South Africa total more than R800million per day. The theft of fuel is a massive industry and this valuable commodity forms part of a system that is costing companies dearly. Most businesses do not know where and when the fuel is being stolen, believing that it is drained or siphoned on the side of the road. This is not always the case, and our research shows that most stolen fuel never reaches the vehicle’s tank.

The Cherry Blossom
On Top Suzuki Vitara
Having lived with the Suzuki Vitara GL+ for a week, Indwe’s motoring staff found several endearing features which should sway buyers in favour of this iconic Japanese brand which, as Maruti-Suzuki in India, enjoys an overwhelming 48 % share of the total passenger car market in that country.
Text: Bernard K Hellberg Images © Quickpic / Bernard K Hellberg
The Vitara is compact, with a great turning circle for ease of parking, lots of headroom thanks to its rather upright design, and an overall exterior which shouts mini Discovery Sport thanks to its clamshell bonnet and “cheekychunky” styling. Ground clearance is a commendable 185 mm.
The interior offers fairly well-shaped, cloth-covered seats, seven airbags (which include one for the driver’s knees), a steering wheel with various controls for sound volume and cruise control added, as well as a five-speed manual gearbox with a gearlever knob so large it’s hard to believe that Suzuki actually thought this
a good idea. And to emphasise the point, they finished the gearlever surrounds in red plastic to really draw attention to it. The engine is typically Suzuki – a smooth in-line four valves per cylinder transverse mounted unit which churns out all of 86 kW. Most buyers would regard this as inadequate, but the 1,075 kg kerb

weight enables fairly brisk acceleration and a top speed (not tested) in the region of 180 km/h. The engine, under idle, is remarkably quiet and balanced, and I had to keep checking the rev counter to see if it was still alive or had gone into sleep mode. Potential customers will be surprised by the mid-dashboard mounted analogue clock – it sports Japanese numerals! Nevertheless, even the most intellectually challenged gaijin (Westerner) will be able to figure it out. The only disappointment is in what the manufacturers call a space-saver spare wheel – and what I prefer to describe as a

cost-saver. And where is the park distance control? This is a must-have in a vehicle with SUV styling and which limits rear view visibility. Fortunately, the rims are 215/60 R16 all-alloy with grippy Bridgestone rubber as an added benefit. The good news is that, at R289,900, the Vitara GL+ represents fairly decent value for money. It’s the Suzuki that buyers will choose if they find the iconic Jimny just too small for their taste. Competing with Ford’s EcoSport – the 82 kW 1.5 Titanium auto retails at R294,900 – the Vitara is also up against the Kia Soul 1.6 Start (R285,000) and the
Renault Captur. The Renault, however, sports a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder turbo, an automatic ’box and 88 kW, and will cost you R300,000. Overall, I would choose the Suzuki for its build quality (which proves that lightweight doesn’t have to feel cheap and tinny), its 47-litre fuel tank (good for a normal touring distance of 780 km), its “blast-you-back-in-your-seat” air conditioning, and its head-turning good looks. And the three-year/100,000 km warranty, as well as the four-year/ 60,000 km service plan may just be the cherry (blossom) on the top. Go for it.

No one has ever said on their deathbed: “I wish I’d spent more time at work.” Equally, however, few people would declare: “I’m so grateful I didn’t work hard enough to live up to my full potential, which is why I ended up earning a pittance and got bossed around by less capable people my whole career.” Somewhere in the middle lies the balance between spending enough hours on work, enough on your family, and enough on yourself. This is easier said than done, of course. The demands on our time have never been as taxing. Being constantly connected has turned even the unwilling into alwayson workaholics, while we are also trying to be perfect parents, partners, friends and children, all of which require huge investments of time and energy. Key to achieving your work and personal goals is to accept that you will never achieve it all. Start with the assumption that you won’t be able to be the best at everything you do, then figure out which trade-offs you are prepared to make. List your ten most important roles in life and rank them, says Guardian journalist and self-help writer Oliver Burkeman. “Then resign from at least the bottom two.” Also,
96/
Indwe
prioritise your day-to-day activities: What are the really important things you want to achieve every day, what makes a real difference in your career and your personal life, what satisfies you most, and what is not worth doing well. This all boils down to being able to say no, or at the very least understanding the opportunity cost of saying yes. Be realistic about what you will have to give up if you agree to a new project or taking on more responsibility at your child’s school. There are also a number of other ways that you can reclaim control over your priorities in life. Work Smarter Stop your job from invading your personal hours by making every minute of your working day count. Start by being absolutely ruthless about cutting out distractions. If you are a social media addict, allow yourself one or two pit stops during the day at fixed times. Judy Goodwin, a change consultant and coach in Cape Town, recommends the time-blocking technique. This involves drawing up a schedule every day and allocating blocks of time to only one task. Commit to only
working on that one task in that time, without any distractions. “Multi-tasking saps the mind,” says Goodwin. Time blocking also works well for setting boundaries on activities like email correspondence, which often eats into the rest of your working day. Importantly, make sure your personal time is blocked out in your weekly diary too: Work will expand into every crevice of your waking hours, in a way that your personal life is not allowed to. Be strict. Set Stronger Boundaries In ye olden days of nary ten years ago, you went to work, you went home, and that was pretty much it. But in the current 24/7 hyper-connected world, it can be extremely difficult to maintain a work-life balance. Don’t check your mails after hours, and if you do work over a weekend, set an example for your staff by scheduling your emails to only go out on Monday morning. Make the Most of Your Commute First, try to cut down on travel. “It will eat up your day,” says Goodwin. Then, use the time in your car constructively. Turn down the inane chatter on the radio and
pApeR Recycling
Paper is a renewable and recyclable resource. In South Africa, trees are farmed, harvested and replanted for the purposes of making pulp and paper products. Recycled paper is used to make new products – especially everyday packaging.
Recycling plays a big part in enterprise development and job creation, helping to alleviate poverty. By separating recyclable paper from general waste, you increase the earning potential for waste collectors. For many this is their only source of income.
Recycling extends the life of landfill sites. One tonne of recycled paper saves three cubic metres of landfill space.
Paper recycling keeps carbon locked up and out of the air for longer. If paper is not recycled, it goes to landfill where it rots with other wet waste and adds to methane emissions.
Recycle now. This is how. Separate your paper from other recyclables and wet waste. Know what is recyclable:
o Magazines, newspapers, brochures o Office paper, shredded paper o Cardboard boxes
o Liquid board packaging, milk, juice and food cartons Remember that newspapers are best recycled within three months.
Keep your paper clean and dry – if it gets dirty and wet, it will start to degrade which reduces its value at buy-back centres. Visit our website for more information.

think problems through, or use the time to review your day. Set Better To-Do Lists At the start of every week, decide what your main goals are – don’t restrict yourself to work, add personal things you want to achieve. But cap the to-do list – only have a set number of things to help you focus your mind on the biggest priorities. Unplug Self-care is extremely important, says Goodwin. You can’t be a machine at work while running on empty. Be aware about what gives you joy and what de-stresses you fastest and best, and work that into your weekly routine.

Have a Purpose You have to know why you are doing what you are doing, says Goodwin. “There has to be an alignment with what you want to achieve – your purpose – and what you are busy with every day.” Take the example of someone in a tough job who is also studying part-time. To an outsider, this may look like a slog. But for the part-time student, the demands are made tolerable

Delegate In your work and personal life, build a network of people who you can count on. Surround yourself with people you trust and who can help take on some of your responsibilities.
Change the Company Culture From the Inside Sadly, most managers still value “chair time” or “face time” above all else. It is the guy who works long hours in the office who looks like the hard worker (even though he spent much of it talking cricket at the copier), not the person who went home early because she did her work more efficiently in half the time. The best way to create a productive workplace that allows flexibility and healthy boundaries is to send a clear message that only results and performance are rewarded, not hours at your desk.

A Sports Car in Sedan
Clothing BMW M2 Coupé
With BMW’s evolutionary and often understated styling “adjustments” one may be forgiven for regarding the stunningly efficient M2 Coupé as a mere sedan. It could play such a role, but also so much more, if called upon.
Text: Bernard K Hellberg Images © BMW
Indwe /101
Under its skin, this direct heir to the successful 1 Series M Coupé pays tribute to the brand’s sporting heritage. Discreet features such as its lightweight aluminium sports suspension, a low front apron with large air intakes, muscular flanks, and 19” alloy wheels allude to this. The traditional BMW engine configuration – a straight-six – has been developed and refined to a point where one wonders how many more kilowatts one will be able to squeeze out of it. Featuring sports car must-haves such as a 3-litre twin cam, twin turbo engine which effortlessly brings forth 272 kW and 465 Nm of torque, it is no surprise, then, that the M2 Coupé will reach a top speed of 270 km/h, and will cover the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 4.3 seconds. This is right up there with true blue Porsche and Ferrari sports cars. When driven more sedately (and kitted out with the optional M double clutch automatic transmission), it’s possible to record fuel economy figures as low as 7.9 l/100 km, according to BMW. The interior architecture also makes a bold statement with its driver focus and
102/ Indwe
flawless ergonomics. The perfectly shaped sports seats, in black leather with blue contrast stitching and an M logo in the back rests, add further style to the vehicle. Adjustable side bolsters on the seats hold the driver and front passenger firmly in place through fast corners such as those experienced during launch at the L’Ormarins racetrack near Franschhoek. M2 specific instruments and dials feature a speedometer reading to 300 km/h, and a rev counter reading of up to 8,000 r/min. To keep all this power under control, especially in the hands of amateurs, BMW engineers have redeveloped the M2 Coupé to new levels of safety and reliability. The brakes, for example, are a product of motor sport, are easy to spot – being painted in blue – and guarantee excellent deceleration, such as one would require on a racetrack, as well as additional levels of safety under normal conditions. These M compound brakes were a revelation on the track and impressed with their resistance to fade and heat. To further emphasise the dual nature of this all-rounder, the steering has two settings
– Comfort and Sport/Sport+ – which also adjusts engine behaviour. In the past, electric power steering often lacked “feel” with regard to road surface feedback. In the M2, this problem has been overcome, providing the car with a unique dual personality, perfect on the road and on the track. Providing concentrated power and a casual, understated charm, the BMW M2 Coupé offers discerning owners the perfect gateway into the world of BMW M cars, a category which, in the past, has not always delivered what has been promised or implied. The arrival of the M2 has changed all that. It has an impressive on-theroad presence from any angle, and not only promises, but also delivers on strong track performance and super comfy long-distance touring capabilities. In the tradition of BMW sports coupés, the M2 contains several stylistic references to highlights from its forebears – notably the 2002 turbo and the legendary 3.0 CSL – thereby spanning four decades of racing and touring history. Those were the cars which made BMW great, and the M2 Coupé is set to add to the legend.

Rainbows Golden Rules for Tenants and Landlords
For an owner, renting out a property has its benefits – it’s a great investment, and renting it out means that your bond is being paid by your tenant. However, renting out your property can be a minefield if it’s not occupied by honest, responsible people.
Text: Property24 Images © iStockphoto.com
Indwe /105
For tenants, the renting option is an easier way of acquiring property. There are no major responsibilities attached, such as insurance or bond payments, and you have more flexibility in terms of relocation due to sudden life changes. However, the responsibilities of both the tenant and the landlord can become very blurred if it is not understood what is expected of each. This can result in bitter outcomes, disagreements and often disputes. By following these simple, yet important rules, you can avoid any unpleasant occurrences and enjoy a hassle-free renting experience. Steps for Trouble-Free Renting As a tenant, you have to be responsible in the choices you make to ensure that you add value to your rental experience. • Make sure you meet the agent managing the rental property and/or the landlord when conducting any form of business relating to the property. Don’t just settle for telephonic or electronic agreements without meeting the people involved. You can also request to see a copy of the Estate Agent’s Fidelity Fund Certificate for any security questions you may have. • Once you’re handed the lease agreement, read through it carefully, taking into account important information, such as the date the rental payment is due, extra costs for water, electricity, sewerage and refuse, as well as the date of expiration of the lease. At this point, ask questions
106/ Indwe
if anything is slightly vague or if you don’t agree with what is stated in the agreement. Also record maintenance issues, if any, that the estate agent or landlord have to attend to. • When payment is requested for rental deposits, never hand over cash, rather make an EFT payment. In this way, you’ll have valid proof of your payment. • Make sure to inspect the property, the interior and exterior, with the landlord present and record any pre-existing defects. If maintenance issues do occur, report them immediately. Communication with the landlord is very important. If you happen to experience some unforeseen financial problems, notify the landlord immediately so that a plan can be devised, but you are still required to keep up your end of the deal. • Remember that the best way to avoid being held liable for damages is to treat the property as though it is your own. Tips for Landlords Renting out a property has its ups and downs for landlords. Choosing the wrong tenant can have some serious implications and leave you with many regrets. However, this can be minimised by following these simple guidelines: • A well-maintained property will attract the right tenants. Make sure your property is good condition, neat and tidy, to limit the tenant from possibly holding back any rental payments due to negligence on the
part of the landlord. • Landlords are encouraged to do a credit check on all potential tenants as well as co-tenants. This can be done through a registered credit bureau known as TPN. They’re easy to find online – just Google TPN. Here you can view the credit history of the potential tenant to ensure that they will not fall back on any payments. • Only remove your property from the market once the tenant has signed the lease, made the necessary deposit payments and you’ve handed over the keys to the tenant/s. • Landlords, know your rights when rental fees and other expenses are not being paid. Tenants are responsible for paying these at the stipulated time. If the tenant fails to do so – without any previous arrangements with the landlord – the tenant is in breach of the contract. This emphasises the importance of thoroughly researching your potential tenants, their credit history, your rights as a landlord and the rights of tenants. Familiarise yourself with the Prevention of Illegal Evictions (PIE) Act. Landlords, you will only find your match if you select them carefully, and tenants will only maintain their end of the agreement if what they’re looking for, such as a well maintained property offering good value, is met. For more advice on renting, being a landlord or a responsible tenant, visit www.property24.com.

IN FLIGHT SOCKS
2016/04/06 8:36 AM
Why wear flight socks? Legs are prone to swelling on long-haul flights, partially due to the cabin pressure and sitting in the same position for long periods of time. By wearing ORTHOFIT IN FLIGHT SOCKS, blood circulation is aided through the sock's graduated compression system, reducing swelling and the risk of deep vain thrombosis, and leaving you feeling fresh on arrival.

My coronary arteries were occluded and I had a heart attack at the age of 32. The prescribed cholesterol medication didn’t work for me and I was afraid that I was going to die early. I have been using Cholesterolease for the past 10 years and my veins and arteries have remained healthy and plaque free. Why don’t you try it for yourself Johan Wilken ( 50 ) Owner of Cholesterolease

Ten Days By Gillian Slovo Dawn is about to break over the Lovelace Estate. Cathy Mason drags herself out of bed as she swelters in her overheated bedroom – the council still haven’t turned the radiators off despite temperatures reaching the 30s. Across London, Home Secretary Peter Whiteley joins his driver and heads to Parliament, while his new police chief, Joshua Yares, clears his head for his first day with a run. All three will have reasons to recollect this morning as their lives collide over ten days they will never forget. Ten Days takes an unflinching look at how lives are ruined and careers are made when small misjudgements have profound effects on frustrated communities and damaged individuals.

Bombardier
SA Express’ Fleet of Choice South African Express Airways started operations on 24th April 1994. Although we are operationally independent of South African Airways, our flights are incorporated within the national carrier’s strategic alliance. The 22 aircraft in our fleet have been acquired from Bombardier Aerospace in Quebec, Canada.

Who is Bombardier? Bombardier Aerospace is a division of Bombardier Inc, which is a major technological company with interests in many facets of transportation, including the Gautrain, which is a Bombardier transportation rail product. When one looks at the most significant aircraft manufacturers in the world, Bombardier is often placed third or fourth on the list (depending on what you read) after the giant airliner manufactures Airbus and Boeing. In 1989 Bombardier acquired Canadair and restored the company to profitability. It then acquired the near-bankrupt Short Brothers aircraft manufacturing company in Belfast, Northern Ireland. This was followed in 1990 by the acquisition of the bankrupt Learjet Company of Wichita, Kansas, builder of business aircraft, and finally the money-losing Boeing subsidiary, de Havilland Aircraft of Canada based in Toronto in 1992. Presently the aerospace division of Bombardier accounts for over half of the company’s revenue and Bombardier’s most popular aircraft include its Dash 8 Series Q400, CRJ100/200/440 and CRJ700/900/1000 lines of regional airliners. It also manufactures the Bombardier 415 amphibious water-bomber, the Global
124/ Indwe
Express and the Challenger business jet. Learjet is also a subsidiary of Bombardier based in Wichita. Of significant importance in recent years has been the development of Bombardier’s C-Series single isle regional jets. As of 21st December 2015, the company held 243 firm orders for the C-Series. On 17th February 2016, Air Canada announced that the airline would purchase 75 C-Series CS300 airliners, the larger variant of the airliner. However, the first CS100 is expected to be flying by mid-2016 in Lufthansa colours. The big news came when Delta Airlines announced its purchase order for 75 CS100s, with an additional 50 options. It’s no wonder, then, that SA Express has long invested in Bombardier aircraft, whose safety and maintenance records are trusted worldwide. We operate two CRJ700 airliners seating 70 passengers, as well as ten CRJ200 aircrafts and ten DH8-Q400 airliners, which both seat 74 passengers. Collectively the aircraft in the SA Express fleet have an average age of only six years. SA Express Destinations Presently SA Express serves
24
destinations from OR Tambo International Airport, our Johannesburg hub, which includes 17 domestic destinations and seven regional cities in five SADEC countries. We carry approximately 1,5 million passengers per year, making SA Express one of the largest regional airlines on the African continent. Airliner Fleet Maintenance SA Express Technical is renowned for the high quality of its maintenance, and its repair maintenance facility based at OR Tambo International Airport (within the South African Airways Technical precinct) has been a major contributor to the outstanding safety record of the airline to date. In addition, SA Express Technical was the first approved Bombardier Aircraft Service Facility on the African continent. The overall safety and comfort of our passengers is of utmost importance, and we have not had a single serious incident during our 22 years of operation. “We would never compromise on safety standards for the sake of commercial gain. This organisation has always maintained a ‘people first’ priority and that will never change,” concludes SA Express CEO, Inati Ntshanga.
Meet the Crew Have you ever wondered who is flying the plane when you travel on SA Express? Or wanted to know more about what a job as a cabin crew member is like? Well, now’s your chance! Every month we will introduce a few members of our SA Express family, because by getting to know them, you become part of the SA Express family too. Text & Image © Supplied
Thato Senamela Senior Cabin Crew Member Length of Service: 11 years Tell us more about yourself: I am a fun, strong-willed and extroverted person, and am also a proud mom to my 13-year-old son. What is your favourite part of your job? I love the family-like bond that I have with my fellow crew members – it makes the job such a joy. What do you find most challenging about what you do? I struggle with early morning shifts and working during the school holidays when my son is at home. Why do you like working for SA Express? I like meeting people from all walks of life. I also like the fact that I work routes which allow me to come home every day and not have to overnight anywhere. What would people find surprising about your job? That although I have to work with people all day, I am actually quite shy. Have you ever had any funny incidents onboard? Once, during an evening flight, a passenger looked out of her window and asked if the lights we were seeing as we flew over Johannesburg were from Soweto. I had to tell her that, unfortunately, as it was dark, I couldn’t tell where the lights were coming from, as there are lights everywhere in Johannesburg!

Cabin baggage SA Express will accept one piece of cabin baggage not exceeding a total dimension of 115cm and 7kg in weight. For safety reasons, cabin baggage must fit into approved stowage spaces: either the overhead luggage bin or under the seat. When boarding one of our flights, simply place any hand luggage that will not be required during the flight on to the Skycheck

In addition to building on our motto to express excellence and consistently striving to provide the best service, we know that “you” is the most important word in our airline. SA Express proudly launched its new brand on 2 December 2009 at OR Tambo International Airport. The new brand is set to ensure that it’s distinctive and positioned to build awareness and affinity in the domestic and regional markets. The new proposition “We Fly for You” is set to position SA Express as a premier intra-regional African brand. The main objective of the re-brand is to ensure that SA Express is distinctive yet still aligned to the country’s mainline carrier. SA Express’s unique positioning as an airline that
provides a bespoke, personalised travel experience was the rationale behind the proposition “We Fly for You”. The new brand mark is in line with the symbol and colours of the national flag, encouraging national pride. The new brand will be applied to all brand touch-points throughout the operation as well as the staff uniform. Awards SA Express has won the AFRAA Regional Airline of the Year Award at the end of 2009, and the Allied and Aviation Business Corporate Award. Our airline was also the recipient of the Annual Airline Reliability Award from Bombardier at the end of 2007. Onboard service The airline’s onboard service is unique and offers passengers a variety of meals or snacks. The airline pioneered its unique meal-box concept, and meal choices are frequently updated and designed using balanced food criteria: appearance, taste and nutritional value. Passengers can also enjoy a wine and malt service on specified flights as well as refreshments on all flights. Light snacks will be served on selected flights. Our customers can expect a safe, comfortable, quality air-travel experience, with the added benefits of frequency, reliability, on-time departures and unmatched value for money.

Passenger Letters Excellent Service Delivery As a regular traveller, both locally and internationally, I have just had the most eye-opening experience on SA 1721 from Walvis Bay to Cape Town. I was met at the door by a very friendly Fiona who, based on her smile, really seemed to recognise me, as I do travel a lot on this route. As is normal, thanks to the monotony of waiting for passengers to embark and the plane to get ready for take-off, I was fast asleep when Freddie passed with the food and drinks trolley. When I did wake up, I waited patiently for him to show his face from behind the curtain as I was in the mood for a relaxing Rietvlei Chardonnay to while away the time. When Freddie appeared he was on a mission to deliver beers, coffee and other drinks to passengers all over the plane, and I admired how he knew who wanted what! I sheepishly put up my hand and requested a white wine with ice, as I had slept through all the action. With a huge smile he dashed off and within moments I had exactly what I had ordered. For some reason, I know that the small plastic glass of ice lasts exactly five minutes at flying altitude. Thinking how I would get Freddie’s attention to top up my ice, he magically appeared with another bottle of Rietvallei’s best. He was so fast I couldn’t even get my ice order in! It was not a minute later that he was back with a full glass of ice, his knowing look saying, “You will need that, buddy.” I have travelled millions of miles over the years, but I have to commend Freddie for being the most intuitive and attentive air host ambassador I have ever come across. This, complemented by the normal pleasant pilots’ calming commentary, will ensure that I will remain a loyal SA Express passenger. SA Express, maybe it’s time you do Undercover Boss and see the wonderful people you have working for you. Kind Regards Wayne Hart Congratulations to Wayne, who wrote our winning letter this month, and walks away with a stunning American Tourister Lightway spinner suitcase.
Dear Indwe I recently had to fly to Cape Town for a seminar, so I travelled from Richards Bay to Johannesburg in one your smaller aircraft. People are often scared of these small aircraft, but they make me feel so much safer. From Johannesburg I caught the connecting flight to Cape Town. My luggage was conveniently transferred on my behalf, relieving any possible stress. During the flight, a difficult passenger insisted on standing and shouting at the cabin attendant, who handled the situation speedily and professionally – I was certainly impressed. The pilots on board were also extremely professional and landed the plane skilfully. My personal wish is that flights could be more affordable so that young people, single moms, as well as old people can also experience this privilege, and be able to travel often to see their loved ones. Regards Michelle Steyn
