CAMPUS LEADERS SHARE TJ LESSONS Tim Cho and Giancarlo Valdetaro SGA President and Vice-President To the TJ classes of 2020, 2019, and 2018:
To our beloved class of 2017:
After a decade of planning, constant renovation delays, temporary drywall tunnels, and even a consideration to change campus locations, the renovation is finally due to be completed this summer. This, along with Dr. Glazer’s graduation, means that the environment at TJ has never been so receptive to change. While change is not necessarily bad, our goal from the start of the school year was to guide it in the right direction. During this crucially formative year, we hoped to establish a culture of kindness and respect that could live on in the new building years after we graduate. At the same time, we wanted to hold onto the long-standing traditions that have been at the core of TJ culture for many years. Thus began our delicate balancing act between new and old traditions. Unfortunately, due to these changes, some experiences will be uniquely yours alone. Indeed, you are the last classes to walk beneath ceilingless hallways, to brave the elements trekking to Weyanoke, to have trailers in the back of the school, to sit in nameless commons, and to wet your feet in the third floor pool. However, there are other experiences that are crucial to the TJ experience. Thus begins your civic responsibility:
What a ride these past four years have been. Through the ups and downs, Homecomings and J-Days, IBETs and iNites, it has been an honor and pleasure serving you. During our tenure, we have soaked in too many lessons to share- here are just a few to keep at heart: First, don’t sell yourself short. We have all experienced our share of “successes” and “failures,” some more than others. But keep in mind perspective. For the past four years you have been constantly surrounded by incredibly bright minds. At school, you’ve witnessed a CNN hero, an Intel ISEF competitor, and a Forbes’ top 30 under 30 recipient. On social media, you have compared your day-to-day life with another’s filtered highlights. It is easy to forget that you have completed an education at one of the most rigorous schools in the nation. You have so much to offer the worldbut not everyone will believe in you. So do yourself a favor and be your own greatest advocate, your number one fan, your friend and companion.

Working alongside a freshly-shaven Mr. Frank will be a new principal who may or may not understand TJ’s traditions and cultures. It is your duty to inform her, through your words and your actions, why TJ homecoming is our most spirited week, why iNite cannot be further restricted, why our fine arts departments are second to none, why J-day booths and basketball must continue, why we came here for the sports, and why, most importantly, our students deserve to have their voices heard and accounted for. With a new principal, it is very likely that many administrators will change- how they interact with and listen to the student body for the next dozen years will be based off the precedent you set. Cliché as it may seem, with great power comes great responsibility. We’ve done the best we can to prepare you for this moment- embrace it. Get involved, let your voices be heard, and lay down the tracks that will steer TJ in the next chapter of its story.
that awaits us.
Second, remember to leave time for yourself. We get it, your work is important. But so are you. We promise, that email isn’t going anywhere while you take a moment to breath. To destress. To take a detour onto the path less traveled. To stop and smell the roses. We have worked so hard for so long, we really deserve to give ourselves a break, at least one more time before we rush off to the greatness
Finally, be thankful. It is said that the best way to step off the hedonic treadmill is to realize how lucky you are and to be grateful. Don’t hesitate to let people in your life know how special they are to you. And remember, no matter how independent you think you are, there are friends and family that have been imperative in getting you to this point. Let them know. Express your appreciation. Give back the love. At the end of your life, you won’t be remembered for your prestigious education, your high income, or your impressive resume. Instead, you’ll be known for the lives you touch, the value you create for our community, and the kind of person you are. The end of high school concludes the prologue to your life- now begins the first chapter. Be nervous, for you write in pen. Be excited, for the way your story unfolds. And most all, just be. That will be enough.
Jack Boyle Captain of the Football Team My time at TJ started not in a classroom on the first day of school, but on the football field a month before school began. During these long, tough 2-a-day practices, I repeatedly heard the mantra, “Football is Family”. This didn’t make sense at first because I was out on the field with a bunch of people I hardly knew. But with each grueling practice and hard-fought game, we became like brothers. Four years later, it’s no question that playing football was the best decision I made in high school. It’s no secret that TJ is an extremely competitive environment. Our school is inherently focused on individual academic success. This is exactly why playing football and lacrosse was so important to me. While we are so often focused on what we’re doing inside the classroom and our personal achievements, sports taught me to look beyond that and to become part of something bigger
than myself. I cherish the successes I shared with my teammates far more than the ones I achieved on my own. During every season, I encountered obstacles and setbacks. However, facing them with my teammates not only made the challenges easier to overcome, but brought us together. After finishing my final high school football game this past fall, I rePhoto by Christine Zhao alized that the reason I loved playing as much as I did was because of the people I played with. While some of the things we do in life won’t last forever, the friendships and families we form because of them will.

Fellow seniors, We made it. Was the journey easy? No. But have we grown? Most definitely. As we say our final goodbyes and prepare to throw our caps, we’d like to leave you some parting advice. First, fear repetition. At TJ, it was easy to become a slave to the grind -- wake up, drone through class, balance extracurriculars we “care about,” study late into the night, and repeat. Very cyclical and frankly, unhealthy. With this repetition, we pushed off what mattered; however, do not wait for anything. If you want something, take action. Pursue that cute guy or girl. Be there for your friend. Join that club. Make memories worth smiling upon. Inactivity should be your worst enemy. Second, remember everything works out in the end. We’ve all been there, anxiety welling up inside us as we stayed up to garner those couple extra points in a class. It seemed that we would never finish, never pass, and never be satisfied. But after falling short countless times, here we are, finished. Don’t stress over negligible differences in outcome. There’s something amazing in store for you -- an A versus an A- won’t change that. Focus rather on making the most of every second and every interaction. Before you know it, you’ll be wearing a cap and gown once again, and you’ll wish you could have the time back.. Finally, put your talents to use. In this bubble of rigorous academics and talented peers, it’s been easy to forget how special you are. No matter how much TJ may have brought you down, you were
chosen to be here for a reason and have matured incredibly over these four years. In a world so imperfect, it’s our role as future leaders to aim for perfection. Wake up everyday with a purpose. Never let a day pass by where you don’t positively impact another life, no matter how small the scale. Now here we are, where what seemed like yesterday will soon become the good ol’ days. Remember to stay grounded in the present and, in the words of Michael Scott, “may your hats fly as high as your dreams.” Best of luck, and thank you for the humble privilege of letting us represent you. Sean Tran 2017 SGA Senator
Dear Seniors, I know that, four years ago, most of us would not have believed we would be here right now, about to graduate, on the verge of the rest of our lives. It seems like only yesterday that we first set foot into TJ, yet here we are now, one foot out of the door, minds set on the future. I would like to ask you, though, to take a minute and reflect on your experience at TJ:
on top of amazing scientists, a diverse group of students linked by our passion and drive to excel. At TJ, I became someone I never dreamed I’d be: an extroverted, proud, take-charge kind of guy. I ran for SGA Senator on a whim. Yet, serving on student government has become part of my identity, something that I treasure dearly about myself.
What have you learned? I learned a lot during my time at TJ: how to Why did I ask you to think code, how to dissect a squid, how to do physics (kind of, not really). But, the most important things I’ve learned have had nothing to do about these questions? Because with academics: I learned how to fail, how to dance, how to open up, they are important to ask in growing as a person, in finding how to lead, and, most importantly, I learned how to be me. who you are, no matter where What have you done? For your school, for yourself. Whether you’re you are in life. From my experunning cross country, running a nonprofit, or running for a position rience as your SGA Senator for in a club, we all have had times where we have reached out of our the past two years, I hope that comfort zones. I never thought that I would be involved in student you will remember this as you government, but now I couldn’t think of my life without it. CAMPUS LEADERS SHARE TJ LESSONS Clara Fontaine Neuroscience Society Co-President
I’ve loved a lot of things at TJ: the unparalleled lab experience where I could tinker with op-amps and blow up LEDs, wearing a swimsuit over my clothes for a TJSD spirit day, and playing ultimate frisbee for the first time. However, what made TJ special is connecting with the people around me. You could go through TJ without taking a single glance into the lives of your peers. You’d probably end up fine in life. But after making that first effort into engaging with the diverse array of backgrounds, experiences, and passions in our community I’ve found so much more meaning in these past four years. Everyone’s got their own interests, even if they themselves haven’t put a label on it quite yet. When I came into TJ, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I still don’t entirely know. I had some interests, but I hadn’t done much exploring. Everything began to grow when I threw myself into communities like Inspire Programs, Neuroscience Society, and Writing Center. I was surrounded by people passionate in all areas of interest, and their excitement got me excited, too. They unknowingly opened my mind, diversified my interests, and gave me the energy to pursue them. Who knew I’d end up so interested in neuroengineering, ethics, teaching, and aerospace? Learning to embrace the drives of my peers helped me realize the best way to do something meaningful (not just resume-meaningful); work together within and for these communities. We all have strengths, so give your peers trust and autonomy to be creTimmy Chan Drama Recruitment Officer
If you told the freshman me that I was destined to be a theatre kid, I probably would have laughed at you. I was a shy, Asian boy who could barely present his IBET project in front of his classmates. So if that clueless kid could turn into a singing machine who’s performed in front of thousands of people, anything can happen. Theatre has taught me to keep an open mind. I was never supposed to end up on stage, but somehow I found myself taking a bow. Sure, there have been a lot of bumps along the way. There aretimes when something’s gone terribly wrong and you just have to play along. Whenever you encounter these speed bumps, try not to stress too much. The show will go on, and they’re always something that you can laugh about when its all over. But do not let your fears and doubts stop you from trying something new. Keep an open mind and take initiative. As the Drama department’s recruitment officer, I’ve met too many seniors who just discov- Photo by Christine Zhao ered acting during their final year at TJ and wished they’d done it sooner. ative and do incredible work, defined in their terms. While a lot of us are micromanagers (myself included), we often find the most innovative ideas when we pool what we’ve got together to a shared purpose. We not only do learn and strengthen ourselves, but grow closer as a community. TJ isn’t all about advanced classes, prestigious internships, or getting into college. Its life lies in the powerful spirit of our connected people. Instead of going through four years alone, engage in this community we’ve been so fortunate to be a part of. Listen and learn from your peers. Explore their interests and build yours. Share your passions with the community, and we’ll lift each other and grow together. It’s often hard to escape the pressure of constantly comparing ourselves to our incredible peers, so remember that your individuality and personal passions are what help build our community. Photo by Christine Zhao Kristin Myers Honor Council Founder and President
Dear Class of 2017: We made it. We survived four years of renovation, homecoming politics, and Twitter beef. We got through the robot project, an entire year of Webassign, and we even learned a few things in Geosystems. This is it. Let’s not let it be over, not yet, not entirely. Of course, in a few weeks we will all say goodbye to each other and to TJ, but that doesn’t mean we should forget what TJ has given us. If this experience has taught me anything, it’s taught me to take time to reflect. Keep a journal. Write poetry. Stop to think about what you’ve accomplished. It’s so easy to get caught up in the momentum of it all - you have seven tests, three projects, and musical rehearsals until nine all this week and there just isn’t time. But it’s the moments of personal meditation where we learn more about ourselves - who we’ve become and how our experiences have shaped us. Reflect on your time here. Look at it holistically, don’t just focus on all the construction dust that definitely made you sick or the hours of homework you had junior year. Remember the first person you met at freshman orientation, appreciate that inspirPhoto by Christine Zhao ing English teacher from sophomore year, or recall that great senior skip day adventure. Remember the classes you loved...and the ones you regret. Remember the little interactions that made your TJ experience unique. It was rough sometimes, but we’ll never encounter another community quite like this one. We’ve got a few weeks left, let’s make them count.

How will you remember us, Dr. Glazer? Q: When you think of the Class of 2017, what adjectives come to mind? A: Smart, considerate, giving Q: What distinguishes the Class of 2017 from the classes before it? A: Their diversity makes them stronger. Don’t get caught up in political rhetoric – celebrate your differences and continue to be proud of your identity. Q: What was your most memorable moment in dealing with the Class of 2017? A: I had the joyful opportunity to teach function aerobics to many of them in my Algebra II/trig class when they were freshman. I have also enjoyed performing with the Class of 2017 on stage through iNite and the school musical. Photo by Ankit Agrawal
CLASS SPONSORS REFLECT ABOUT SENIOR CLASS
Ms. Jill Burdick-Zupancic WHEN YOU THINK OF THE CLASS OF 2017, WHAT ADJECTIVES COME TO MIND? When I think about the class there’s not a way to sum everybody up. I’ve not had the pleasure of course of having every student in the Class of 2017, but teaching sophomores, juniors, and seniors while they were here I’ve had a lot of them. I think that what makes them cool and unique as a class is their differences that they have but their willingness and I think also kind of their passion about coming together and doing things as a community even though they’re so different. WHAT PARTING WORDS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE CLASS OF 2017? I think to just keep on being who they are. I’ve had such an overwhelmingly positive experience with them, there certainly have been exceptions but, it is such a unique group of students that I cannot wait to here about what they’re doing, whether they’re going to college or traveling or whatever’s happening next year and beyond, I think that there a group of students that we’re going to be hearing a lot about kind of on a pretty significant scale in the future.
Mr. Brian Field WHAT WAS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT IN DEALING WITH 2017? I liked seeing you guys interact outside of the classroom environment. You guys are seriously just as passionate in the classroom as [in] some of the other things that you do. There’s this perception of like, ‘Oh, the class sponsor, it’s a lot of work.’ [But] I loved being class sponsor. I thought it was a lot of fun. The one thing I think I’ll miss is seeing you guys develop from freshman year to senior year. I really like seeing students in leadership roles, the relationships they build, seeing how you guys progress. WHAT WAS YOUR MOST DIFFICULT MOMENT IN DEALING WITH 2017? The float because, and maybe this is just communication issues, but there was always the assumption, ’Oh, things are going really well,’ and they’re like, ‘Yes we’re making flowers, we have this many flowers,’ and then the day of [the homecoming game], it’d be like, ‘Yeah, we’re not even close to being done.’ Like what happened? It’s specific to our class, how bad we are at creating a class float. Every class has one thing they’re not good at, ours was the float.

A favorite pastime of ours is going through the old copies of Teknos in Dr. Torbert’s storage, which date back to the early 2000s, and seeing how TJ has evolved over the past few decades. As Editors-in-Chief and four year members of Teknos, we’ve had the opportunity to watch our beloved journal grow. As with everything during the Class of 2017’s tenure, there have been drastic upheavals during our time here. From sponsors to publishers, we’ve changed it all. There were long and heated arguments on font, as the Great Serif Debate of 2016 serves to prove. There were many spacing and formatting debacles too, which we will continue to have in the years to come. We had our ups and downs, with frantic yet fun
after school meetings and more pizza than anyone should consume. We recall the J Day fundraising attempt, which ended in humorous disaster as we learned the hard, chocolate-covered way that chocolate fountains were not meant to operate outside. Despite it all, we have come out of TJ stronger because of it, and Teknos has become better than ever. We are in awe of all the amazing research that students at TJ are doing and it has been an honor to immortalize it in print. Many thanks to Alyssa Lee who designed our beautiful cover this year. As well as Kara Petersen for teaching us the magical ways of Indesign, and Dr. Torbert for providing his classroom and his guidance.

our years ago, I would have never imagined that I would be a part of tjTODAY, let alone take Journalism as a class. But then again, I didn’t imagine that construction would ever come to grumble an end, or that I would graduate from TJ. Here’s how it all started. a As a rising junior, I chose to take Journalism because I wanted to become a better writer, which is ironic, because this is the first thing I’ve written for tjTODAY. Sitting in class hearing students about the freezing cold classroom, I started satire column about small TJ issues. From indignant Facebook posts, I learned about widespread food thefts and outrage over iNite. Watching a 2018 class council member elbow-deep in a papier-mâché volcano, I decided to write about how homecoming floats come to life. Talking to my track coach, I gained new perspective on generational gap illuminated by the death of Prince. And from these people I interviewed, I learned how to find excitement in work.

rom the far corners of the trailer lot to a history classroom surrounded by physics ones, Threshold has moved all over TJ’s campus in the last few years. With the renovation finally complete, I think it’s safe to say we have reestablished the Threshold Cave. But now with windows! And laptops right outside. After finally settling down, we found ourselves falling into a steady rhythm - but not without a few obstacles along the way. We faced a shortage of submissions, left a few pieces undiscussed and floating around our inbox, and found ourselves working through the very last minute to meet deadlines. The theme of this year’s magazine is Catalyst - a theme for both our designs
and our lives. A catalyst inspires change, and is the driving force of an event. Threshold is that catalyst for us. A part of our lives that has taught us more than we could have hoped for (how to not screw up on InDesign for one). The literary analysis, features writing, and design skills we have picked up are unique to Threshold, and ones we will never lose touch with. But literary skills are most definitely not the only things will take with us. The crazy times we had during late work nights are what we will hold most dear in our hearts. From singing along to the wacky songs of Heathers, the musical, to streaming Frozen from a *cough* sketchy website to gulfing down a pizza within minutes, the memories we made together will last forever.
From left to right: Art and Design Editor Alvin Shi, Communications Editor Sneha Ravi and Editor-in-Chief Hama Mani.
As we head off in our separate directions, wondering what our futures hold, we will all take with us the treasures we discovered and the friends we made while working on what I would say is the most lit mag ever.
