CAMPUS LEADERS SHARE TJ LESSONS Nick Begotka and Sherry Xie SGA PRESIDENT AND VICE-PRESIDENT

Dear Colonials, From Dr. Bonitatibus starting her freshman year to varsity football’s historic homecoming win, there is no doubt that this year has been marked by change. We welcomed the freshest freshmen, who will never know the trek to Weyanoke. We watched the Rubik’s Cube team solve 25 cubes in 49 seconds, setting another world record. We witnessed the Chess team win their first national championship, a tournament more competitive than sign ups for Design and Tech 8th periods during robot season. And just as HQ swept the nation, we buzzed in to TJ’s own inaugural trivia night. In order to progress, improve, and innovate, change is essential. However, misguided change can cause more harm than maintaining the status quo. Fortunately, we have an administration that is willing to make changes to improve our school. And as we are well aware, they have made and are continuing to make changes quickly.

But also remember that we are all united by a common interest in improving the TJ community. Be willing to work together and support changes that will benefit the school we love. However, if you feel that we are progressing in the wrong direction, do not be complacent. Speak up, and ask the questions that need to be asked. Instead of writing a 5 paragraph vent, channel your passion into more meaningful conversations. Have the audacity to speak to your teachers, administrators, assistant principals, and principal. Go to that SGA meeting even if the promotional post isn’t advertising free food. Ask those in student government how you can get involved. Make time to attend a PTSA, human relations, or mental health committee meeting. We promise it’s worth it.

From Homecoming Week to JDAY Basketball, we’ve seen the unparalleled spirit that makes this school unique. It is this same spirit that has united us in the face of tragedy, given us the strength to persevere, and allowed us to defend the values enshrined in TJ’s original mission. Philip Cho CAPTAIN OF THE SOCCER TEAM

When I heard the final whistle of my last game of TJ soccer, tears weren’t shed. Yes, that was the last time I’d compete in a meaningful game, the last time playing a sport that I devoted myself to for the last 13 years, and it ended in a disappointing loss to arguably our greatest conference rival. It sucked, but it didn’t strike me as heavily I would’ve imagined. Saying goodbye to my teammates and thanking them for an amazing four years, though – that one really hit the feels. These boys were some of the first friends I made in high school, and through countless W’s and endless locker-room banter, we’ve made so many fond memories and iconic jokes – even if most of the jokes were about me. Wrapping up those experiences was beyond difficult. I really think that speaks to what my time at TJ was all about. During my four years here, I received my first F, choked on renovation

debris, failed miserably in every attempt at a grade bump, and made a first round exit in J-Day basketball. But now that we’re graduating, these lows seem glaringly insignificant compared to the friends I’ve made and the fun we’ve had. I no longer think of missed opportunities or careless mistakes, but the incredible experience I’ve had with some incredible people.

This is not to discredit those who take a standard path, but rather to bring awareness to alternatives. Throughout college you will continue to notice many people cruising through the clear, well-accepted pathway into their desired career, especially for the more popular ones. Don’t feel pressured into thinking you have to necessarily follow a standard path. With the career landscape constantly changing, it is important to at least think about what following a previous path might entail before diving in. Tamun Hanjra VICE-PRESIDENT OF BAND COUNCIL, MARCHING BAND/DRUMLINE SECTION LEADER

Dear TJ, First and foremost I would like to say this: cherish every moment you have with the people around you. Lean on your friends when you need them. Don’t always be the one who supports others. Love yourself, but learn to let others love you as well. My time at TJ, I was engrossed in the band department. I marched for four years in both the marching band and the indoor drumline. I played my flute in the concert band. Band, essentially, was my entire life. While I am not necessarily saying that you should do band (well, you should…), it is important that you find something that makes you happy, something that you are truly passionate about. Find your home. Coming into TJ, I was petrified. How was I ever going to survive in this school where I barely knew anybody? Little did I know that marching band would change my life, for the better. After spending a grueling summer in the sun, marching set after set, I didn’t understand why all the upperclassmen were so excited about the season. Sure, going to Orkney Springs and spending 5 days there was a blast, but that was no reason to tear up at the mention of the end of the season. Wrong. I walked into school knowing around 100 other people, and that was the best thing I could’ve asked for. I got to my senior year, and all the tears made sense. I dreaded the start of the season because I knew it meant the end was closer.

I feel the same way about the end of my high school career. Yes, I can not wait for summer and not having to wake up at the break of dawn every day to make my way from Loudoun to Fairfax, but I am going to miss it. It hasn’t hit me that I won’t be walking through the doors of TJ as a student after June 5th and when it does hit me, I am sure it will be excruciatingly bitter-sweet. So, this comes back to my first point, cherish the moments you have with your friends around you. Remember the importance of small, random acts of kindness and keep spreading positivity all Photo by around. Be optimistic about the future, but know that it’s okay to be scared and it’s okay to not be okay all the time.

Dear Hogwarts TJHSST Class of 2018, Growing up, we both knew that there was one school we wanted to spend our teen years in. We each dreamed that someday we could feel the thrill of getting accepted into this prestigious institution. Unfortunately, our Hogwarts letters never came. We blame the owls losing their way to the corners of Loudoun and Fairfax county. However, the four years we’ve spent at TJ have been filled with memories and adventures that will last a lifetime. Now, we know not all these memories have been pleasant. We’ve all had really hard times at different points during our four years. Everyone has wondered at some point what would have happened if they didn’t go to TJ or even contemplated leaving the school. The fact that you persevered through some of the toughest moments of your life so far is something that should be celebrated. Our journey through TJ has shaped who we are, and through the highs and lows we’ve learned more about ourselves. We know the lessons we’ve have learned here, both inside and outside the classroom, will help shape our futures. As cliche as it sounds, even though we’re leaving TJ, TJ will still be a part of us. While it may not have always been the best of times, we did find TJ to be a little bit more like Hogwarts than we had previously thought. Physics was harder than Defense Against the Dark Arts, and the number of spills in Chemistry reminded us of Potions. There may not have been a quidditch tournament, but the football games brought us together as a community. The house rivalries were replaced with fierce class competitions, where we dominated. We’re going to have a prom that is guaranteed to be even more memorable than the Yule ball. There were times when we studied like Hermione, showed strength like Harry, and laughed like Ron. We hope you had a truly magical four years at TJ, and we know the next years will be even better. Meghana Boojala

NAMASTE PRESIDENT

TJ DRAMA STAGE MANAGER

iNite always has two shows: the grand, rehearsed act presented to the audience and the intimate, nearly fervent display behind the scenes. The first show reveals talent and hard work, but I think the latter unveils the true spirit and character of the Class of 2018. 2018, I have seen you make the case for cultural representation when iNite was facing pressure to downsize. You fought for your roots, values, and peers — you never silenced your dissent. Amidst the various meetings and messages, you understood the importance of advocacy and perseverance. As the show was going on, I could see trembling hands and frozen faces in the side wing’s dim light. The loud audience and huge stage must have been intimidating. Yet, as soon as you all stepped out of the curtain, your hands moved confidently and your face shined with confidence. We all conquered our fears and seized the moment. And who can forget our school’s hallways and rooms during rehearsal sessions? There was music and laughter and most importantly, there were hundreds of students carefully led by our class’s leaders. As the senior class, you taught those that were struggling and worked tirelessly to make your acts as perfect as possible. You learned to place the group’s needs ahead of your own. Moving forward, I hope we remember the lessons that high school taught us. Within us, we have the strength to fight for ourselves and those around us. My final greeting to you all is “Namaste” — the potential in all of us is equal, and I am humbled by that.

A theater company has an almost rigid structure, in which each member has a role to carry out. From the cast to the crew to the artistic designers to the conductor, there are hundreds of people assigned to specific tasks. TJ Drama though? Not so rigid of a structure. See, when I joined the theater class my freshman year, there were two other kids in that class. I barely even knew the extracurricular club existed. And how I found out? I was handed the job of assistant stage manager for the school musical. No experience, no prerequisites - just a new director with a feeling that I’d be able to do the job. Soon, I realized I was not joining an ordinary high school drama department; I was joining a club that was fading into the background of our school’s STEM culture. I understood that if I wanted to see the department function even close to those other schools, my job of stage managing would not just be drawing blocking diagrams and calling set changes. To each and every student that joined us to get through renovation, to hold shows in a tiny blackbox theater, to sell out on closing night of Les Mis, and to get nominated for four Cappies: thank you for not only making my job easier, but for treating yourself to something magical. Things will never be perfect when you walk in, they’ll never be perfect when you walk out. But when you have a vision, all you have to do is put some hard work in and you’ll get there. So, to the future generations of TJ Drama, you might not know what lies ahead but I suggest one thing: keep the faith.

GRADUATION || JUNE 08, 2018 05

How will you remember us, Dr. Bonitatibus? WHAT ADJECTIVES WOULD YOU USE TO DESCRIBE THE CLASS OF 2018? Scholars, competitors, and collaborators. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT WITH THE CLASS OF 2018? Seeing how the seniors were participating and just the fundraising efforts that were happening and the outreach, their excitement in the stands, the football game, all of that to me was probably the first time that I really got to experience the seniors with all of their enthusiasm and engagement with the school outside of the classroom. WHAT CHARACTERISTICS DO YOU THINK DEFINE THE SENIOR CLASS? When I spoke to the senior council, they really talked about their resiliency. They’re the one class here that’s lived through the renovation and they did it by all accounts. If something moved one day or if they were asked to go down long hallways or get umbrellas to go outside to where the trailers were, they did it without complaint knowing that we were going to get to a better place.

Class sponsors reflect on senior class Michael Auerbach

WHAT PARTING WORDS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE CLASS OF 2018? Occasionally, students return home from college frustrated, saying things like “everyone at my college is X.” X could be “focused on their classes,” “too into partying,” “obsessed with fraternities/sororities,” or whatever, but it can’t possibly be true. If there’s no one thing that describes everyone at TJ, when we’re all from the same area and have similar backgrounds, how could it be true at a college, with a much larger group of people who are so much more diverse? The lesson is, hopefully, that no matter what type of group of people you are looking for in college, if you look hard enough, you will find it. WHAT WAS YOUR MOST DIFFICULT MOMENT IN DEALING WITH THE CLASS OF 2018? Planning the Freshman Lockup at Audrey Moore Rec Center was a lot of work, both for us sponsors and for the class officers. We were extremely proud of the effort the officers put in to make that event such a success. And we were the last group that ever got to have Laser Tag at an FCPS event!

Charles Dela Cuesta

WHAT PARTING WORDS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE CLASS OF 2018? The friendships you’ve built over these past 4 years will last a lifetime. But, as you get older, you’ll find that these friendships will take more and more effort to maintain. Don’t let them fade away due to negligence. You may find yourself walking on campus and bump into a familiar TJ face and hopefully your interaction goes beyond thinking “Here comes that boy/girl”. Be sure to take the time to say “Oh hey, what’s up?” to see how they’re doing. Those interactions will go a long way in maintaining these relationships. WHEN YOU THINK OF THE CLASS OF 2018, WHAT ADJECTIVES COME TO MIND? When I think of the Class of 2018, one of the adjectives that come immediately to mind is resilient. Despite what the universe threw at them, whether it be messed up admission tests to renovation to the gauntlet known as college admissions, they always took it in stride. The entire room could be on fire around them but the words “This is fine” would come out of their mouths.

tjMEDIA SENIOR STAFF SAYS GOODBYE Getting lost and finding our way Techniques Senior || Gopika Rajanikanth

T

here’s nothing like seeing the yearbook for the first time. You can finally feel the words embossed on the cover and grin as you flip through each page. But getting to that point wasn’t easy. While we were telling the stories of people trying to find their way at TJ, we found ourselves in the same predicament. We missed deadlines, misplaced files, and stressed constantly. But as a staff, we persevered and created a yearbook that we’re proud of, because it shows what really happens at TJ, both the good and bad. Being on staff has been the best thing I’ve done at TJ, and I’m grateful for the friends I’ve made and the skills I’ve acquired. It’s shaped my TJ experience and helped me find my own way.

hen I first stepped in the TJ Media trailer for yearbook training, I didn’t know what to expect. I certainly didn’t think that three years later I would be dealing with a crazy (fun) adviser, evaluating (and being disappointed with) the quality of yearbook memes, taking a picture of our mascot dabbing at Columbia, or treating a 288 page book like my first born child. But in my time here, I did just that. It has been more than just learning how to design spreads and take pictures or teaching Ms. Harris that impact font isn’t okay; it’s been discovering both the extraordinary and mundane aspects of what it means to be a TJ student through the lives of everyone I met. P.S. To the rest of the yearbook team: *whispers* bye

Threshold || Marie Jones, TImothy Liu, Helen Poe, Naitian Zhou

A

s everyone who reads Threshold (that is, approximately four percent of the TJ student body) knows, Threshold’s theme this year was Revival: a reawakening, restoration, or rebirth of something once lost. We chose our theme to reflect the changes occurring within the TJ community, hoping that our literary magazine (as some might say, the most lit mag ever) would provide a platform for students to reflect upon the cultural shifts that occurred during this school year as TJ students welcomed a new principal and continued to settle into a new school building.

Within Threshold and the TJ community, some of this year’s

L

ooking back on three years of student publication work (and for some of us, four years), what stands out the most are the questions. Being a part of tjTODAY has often meant having the self-confidence and nudge forward to ask those questions. To stumble into a commons area, packed with students we don’t know, requires courage and persistence. To approach one of those strangers, and take that leap of faith to find their story, is both rewarding and challenging. To send that email to an athlete, to an alumnus, or to an administrator, is one of the necessary steps we take to make sure our coverage goes beyond the one-sided narrative. It hasn’t always been easy. Here’s a question we all know the answer to: how does it feel walking through the commons areas after a distribution day and seeing four weeks of hard work strewn across the tile floors? It sucks. But regardless of the setbacks, we show up at that next class period ready to keep brainstorming, keep writing, and keep asking. Committing ourselves to storytelling was no small task, but we tried our best to achieve it. At the beginning of this school year, we decided to spend our senior year answering one critical query. What if we redesigned our approach to student journalism? We focused on the pictures rather than the words, the people rather than the facts. We challenged the norms, changed half-page stories to two-page features, and looked beyond the classroom for sources of inspiration. We’re proud of our results, and excited about the room for growth that still remains.

On change and adapting

Threshold underwent its own changes this year as we switched to a new publisher, and as a result, were surprised with a new, expedited production schedule! Editors and staff worked through the busy iNite season to ensure that the magazine was completed by spring break, and although many hours were spent discussing submissions on weekend video calls and working late into the night to finish designing spreads, we spent an equally valuable amount of time laughing over countless jokes involving green water bottles, breathing oxygen, and trophy spouses (if somebody wants to send us a story involving these elements, please feel free).

Pushing through in the face of adversity

Pushing the limits means cracking open the door to let the sunlight in (and in this case, a new-and-improved version of the newsmagazine) -- but it also means leaving the crack behind with the promise of opening the door completely someday. As we smile on years of neon yellow t-shirts and last-minute appeals for interviews on Facebook, we ask ourselves one last question. Where will our years of journalism lead us? Much like a good feature, that question has much more than a oneword answer. And it’s one we’ll keep chasing, our investigative skills by our side.

Looking back on evolution Teknos Seniors || iem Budzien, My-Linh Budzien, Lydia You

O

changes were difficult. Others were inconvenient. Still others elicited simply comical results. All taught us to adapt, to persevere, to laugh at ourselves, but also to question. By definition, a revival is an opportunity for greater change. The responsibility rests with us, as Threshold editors, writers, artists, and ultimately as TJ students, to ensure that these changes, whether within the TJ community or on a broader scale, are for the better.

ver the past years, we’ve seen Teknos change, evolve, and grow, keeping pace with the natural ebb and flow of science itself. We, the senior editors at Teknos, are so incredibly grateful to have been part of such an incredible publication. At times, this journal has been a vehicle for delivering knowledge and inspiring students; at other times, it has spawned many late nights perfecting spreads. This year, we knew we wanted to evolve Teknos. The launch of our website, www.teknos.org, was the first step in this direction. We hoped to expand our audience and engage readers more frequently. We also dedicated ourselves to remodeling the face of Teknos, and we hope this new vision will continue on into future years. It’s bittersweet to say goodbye to the Saturday mornings downing

unhealthy amounts of coffee and scones at Grounded Coffee Shop, or afterschool pizza parties in the Syslab, but we are confident our work will be preserved in the hands of our amazing new officer corps. We’d like to thank Dr. Torbert a thousand times, for constantly supporting our new ideas and accommodating our expansive printing requests without question. Truly, it has been a privilege to witness the journal grow from ideas jotted on a napkin to a beautiful final product, and our experience will always be something we look back on with fondness and pride.

A FINAL SIGN-OFF “

Doing the backpage for the last three years has let me talk to a bunch of different people. I would go into my interviews with no questions, maybe a little social media stalking so I would have an idea of who they were, and just talk to them about anything that came up. It was a different kind of interviewing than I think most people are used to and I think IT HAS DEFINITELY MADE ME A MORE ACTIVE LISTENER IN MY DAY TO DAY LIFE.” “The most important lesson I’ve learned from being on the broadcast team is DON’T FORGET TO TURN ON THE MIC and ALWAYS REMEMBER TO CHECK FOR BATTERIES. I have re-interviewed too many times and run too many miles to forget this.”

“I CAN’T IMAGINE WHAT THE LAST FOUR YEARS WOULD HAVE BEEN LIKE WITHOUT TJ MEDIA. It is so important to do something you are passionate about. For me, no matter how stressed or tired I got and procrastinated on other assignments, I always got the energy to work on journalism assignments because I cared about it so much.
