CAMPUS LEADERS SHARE TJ LESSONS Neil Kothari and Ethan Phillips SGA PRESIDENT AND VICE-PRESIDENT

To Our Fellow Colonials, Like most of you, when we took the courageous leap of accepting our TJ admissions offer, we had no clue what we were getting ourselves into. We can’t say that the past four years have been pretty, but we can say that we’ve valued every moment, every experience, and every lesson learned, except maybe wave labs. We joined Student Government out of concern for the direction in which TJ was headed. We saw an avenue to make changes that would make future students’ four years at Jefferson less painful and more meaningful. Creating change means taking risks. We invite you to be willing to step outside your comfort zone and challenge each other. Push the boundaries of possibility. Whether it be in research, design, engineering, or leadership, progress relies on bold steps forward that come standing up when you are fearful, speaking out when it’s safer to be silent, and exploring the unknown. It will not be easy, but it will be necessary. Be willing to engage in dialogue even when—especially when— you disagree. There will be people in life whose ideas are appalling. People who you feel are undoubtedly wrong. Do not be afraid to challenge them, to upset the status quo. But do so without name-calling or alienating the other side. Being a force for impactful change does not require making enemies. We can disagree without being disagreeable. Bitter facebook arguments have never created the form of tangible and meaningful change we have experienced in Student

Government. Stand up for what you believe in through pragmatic forums. Challenge yourself to show up to a meeting, organize an act of protest, or help change a rule, even if there is no free food involved. While the bulk of the issues at TJ will remain long after we graduate, we are proud of the progress made through SGA, such as the removal of mandatory summer assignments, a review of our intervention procedure, relaxed AP attendance policy, and improving access to mental health resources. We are hopeful that the next group of student leaders will continue to fight for students and remember what makes TJ extraordinary. Beyond the wealth of resources and one-ofa-kind research opportunities, what truly makes this place so special is all of you: the students. You inspire us every day to be better versions of ourselves. However, as a school that strives for and achieves excellence in everything we do, Photo by Jiny Cho it is easy to lose yourself in the numbers and background noise. In college and beyond, we encourage you to focus your talents on the things that truly matter: creation, exploration, and passion above GPA. It has been an honor serving as your President and Vice President, and we thank you for the opportunity to be your champion during challenging times. We are confident that you will continue TJ’s longstanding tradition of excellence in all your future endeavors and wish you nothing but the best. Push the limits, challenge the status quo, be exceptional, and Gooooooooo Colonials!

Gwen Jacobson and Anna Thamsett LATIN HONOR SOCIETY PRESIDENTS

Four years ago, on what seemed a normal March day, hundreds of TJ freshmen were suddenly overwhelmed by a sea of black-clad students chanting a cryptic refrain: “BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH!” As members of Latin Club and officers of LHS, the two of us have witnessed numerous celebrations, arcane rituals, and Shakespearean assassinations, and we have had the distinct honor of experiencing them with and/or inflicting them upon you all the while. To the innocent bystanders who have put up with our shenanigans for all four years, we extend our sincerest awe! You have witnessed the strange and sometimes -- we admit -- cultish deeds for which we have gained notoriety, and we thank you for being such good sports about it. Now to those who have participated wholeheartedly throughout their time here. It has truly been a pleasure to walk alongside all of you, gradually becoming accustomed to the wonderful wacky world that is TJ Latin. Although the quirks of our activities have intrinsic charm and intrigue, people like you -- dedicated and enthusiastic --

add value that nobody can quantify to each activity. Your indefatigable hearts and spirit have helped the Latin Club grow and thrive, and we cannot thank you enough for that. As a class, we are about to move on to even stranger and more mysterious undertakings, a somewhat daunting realization. However, if we meet these new beginnings with the same good nature and enthusiasm we have maintained here at TJ, there is no doubt that we can continue to grow and thrive ourselves. Avēte atque valēte -- hail and farewell!

Atharv Gupta MUN SECRETARY-GENERAL

Model UN is known by many names at TJ; competition, debate, cult; but the role that it has filled in my life is that of family. I’ll never forget the innumerable memories our class has made throughout the past four years, from 2019 carrying TJMUN to Best Large at ILMUNC this year, to our humble beginnings in 20169. These are the memories that have defined my high school experience. Upon joining this club my freshman year, I remember finding myself transfixed by our senior class. They exuded confidence and charisma and made a genuine effort to reach out, serving as role models for us well beyond their time at TJ. I hope that we now represent the same ideals to our underclassmen, and that we continue to do so upon graduating To the students taking over, my only advice is to keep reaching out to those around you. We give hundreds of people the opportunity to compete because MUN can truly change lives. It helped me find my voice and my passion in life, and I’ve seen it do the same for countless others over the past four years. People often say that MUN brings the worst out in people, but it also brings out the best. Never lose sight of that. I hope that this family continues to be a respite from TJ’s overwhelmingness, rather than a contributing factor. I certainly do not know what I would’ve done without it. TJMUN, thank you for everything. We Run This!

BIO OLYMPIAD

CHOIR CAPTAINS

After writing too many two-hundred fifty word reflective essays for college applications, I found it humorous that I was asked to write some parting words. My experiences in Biology Olympiad over the last couple of years have been phenomenal. I can’t clearly recall my first memories of Biology Olympiad freshman year, but back then, we were Photo courtsy of Eric Sun still in the old biology hallway, meeting in the metal jungle of wrangled ceilings with wires poking everywhere. The popularity of our annual J-Day booth was indisputable. We consistently sold out—and continue to sell out of—Popeye’s fried chicken and complementary heart disease in minutes.

From the outside, it would be easy to say that TJ Choir has devolved since we joined as underclassmen. Freshmen year, at our first ever choir concert, Show Choir barely fit into M8 for rehearsals, and was so large that we had to make two rows of singers in an arc that circled almost the entire stage. Since that concert, our numbers have steadily fallen, as singers graduated or left choir to Photo courtesy of Sarah Gold pursue music somewhere more serious. We no longer have a Co Curricular Choir Concert, as we no longer have a curricular choir. The shear numbers make it look like choir is fading into obscurity.

In my earlier TJ years, I drowned myself in Campbell Biology. I was curious about the inner workings of cells, and I treated Campbell like religious scripture. It was hard to find me at school without the book either in my backpack, by my side, or open in front of me. Even though I never made it to the USA Biology Olympiad training camp, I became fascinated with the world of biology. Through Biology Olympiad, I found peers who worked with me on over yearlong research projects in the JUMP lab tackling modern biomedical problems. Looking back at the club now and seeing how much it has grown, I am so proud of everyone in the club for working beyond measure and fostering a community under a similar love for biology.

Fortunately for us, the bonds that hold choir together remain strong, even as the department shrinks. This year alone, we’re on track to put up three concerts, as well as singing at iNite and jDay. Plus, for the first time in years, choir produced its own exhibition musical! Beyond that, the friendships that hold choir together grow closer every day. In rehearsals, singers help one another learn notes and keep their tempos, but the best moments happen in between the music. After concerts at IHOP and before 8th period rehearsals, the incredible singers of TJ Choir find time for companionship – for helping one another through a rough day, for celebrating a good grade or a good game, and for everything in between.

To the underclassmen who are still figuring out what to do, keep looking for what excites you. It may not be biology competitions, or even biology for that matter. But once you have found that one thing—chase after it.

As we leave choir at the end of this year, we are assured that even when facing a lack of administrative support or student interest, TJ choristers will keep on singing out of a love for music and for one another.

CAMPUS LEADERS SHARE TJ LESSONS Aaraj Vij & Mijin Cho 2019 CLASS COUNCIL PRESIDENT & VICE-PRESIDENT

Two roads diverged in the construction that was once TJ And we knew we could not travel both And having only experienced freshmen bio, I looked down the medical path To where the the biotech research labs met sys labs; Then I glanced towards the other, giving CS a chance, And having an internal dilemma, I thought ‘Engineering didn’t sound that bad’; Though a glance was just a glance And the other freshmen also took CS too. After four years, I tell this with a sigh, Somewhere in the middle of homecoming, The two roads diverged in Gym 2, and I -I took the one where my heart agreed And that made all the difference. As our four years at TJ come to a close, we can’t help but smile when looking back at 2019’s journey. From homecoming freshman year, we hit the ground running. We set a whole new standard for money wars, raising more than every other class combined. And we set a whole new standard for float, building something so ugly that the renovation crew stuck it into a wall so it would never be seen again. But that was okay, because by sophomore year, we had it all figured out. What we lacked in talent, we could make up for with Money Wars and confetti. But our experience at TJ has been defined by more than just homecoming: it’s been defined by lessons every step of the way.

At TJ, we learned the importance of community. Throughout every situation, from testing our freshman robot to writing college applications, we have always had each other’s backs. And with that support, we have overcome our greatest challenges. 2019 truly puts unity in the TJ community. At TJ, we learned the importance of taking risks. Whether it was eating one of the world’s spiciest chili peppers during lunch or voluntarily taking AP Physics, we’ve all Photo courtesy of Mijin Cho made mistakes. The wonderful thing about taking risks is that if it pays off, great! And if doesn’t, you can look back and laugh, especially if it involved Dr. Glazer escorting you to the nurse. But most of all, at TJ, we learned to cherish every moment. Whether it’s confetti scattered across the gym bleachers, Donut Days, iNite dances, or the undying hope that maybe, just maybe, we’ll get free air mattresses, we have all had special moments that made our time here unforgettable. And with these lessons, no matter where we end up, we will thrive. Congratulations, Class of 2019. We did it!

Jun Chong and Sohail Mohanty CAPTAINS OF THE FOOTBALL TEAM

The marching band played the same tune it plays every Friday morning and before home games for the last four years. It still pumped me up every time. The marching band made the effort to come in early just so the rest of the school would get pumped for the game that night. That’s what I’ll miss about football- how it brought our school together. Kids were excited and would skip studying for tests just to prep for homecoming week. Teachers would wish us good luck in every class. I felt that it gave us all something to distract us from all the projects, tests, and papers we had. Prior to football games, I got extremely nervous. I was always afraid of letting my school, teammates, and coaches down. It was always running through my mind: ”what if I mess up this one tiny thing?” Like getting the snap or taking the wrong step. Now that I look back at it, that just shows how much I cared about football. I’ll miss my boys the most. These were some of my closest friends at TJ and the worst part about leaving TJ is not seeing them as much. I’ve made a lot of friends though my 4 years at TJ. However, every

single one of my teammates will do anything for me and I’d do the same. We endured so much together. We ran conditioning when one of us messed up. We practiced twice a day in scorching hot temperatures. We lifted together. We watched film together. We won Photo by Sabria Kazmi and lost together. It was a special bond. Football was the best part of my time at TJ. The memories I made will forever follow me.

GRADUATION || JUNE 6, 2019 05

How will you remember us, Dr. Bonitatibus? WHAT ADJECTIVES WOULD YOU USE TO DESCRIBE THE CLASS OF 2019? Heart-focused, independent thinkers, supportive, respectful, leaders. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT WITH THE CLASS OF 2019? One funny memory I have is the HoCo pep rally when seniors fervently chanted “Neil Kothari” when the sound system wasn’t working. Another lasting memory I have is enjoying working with senior class members on mental wellness initiatives. They have been extremely thoughtful regarding how we can take care of each other and build a more positive culture for our school.

WHAT CHARACTERISTICS DO YOU THINK DEFINE THE SENIOR CLASS? Because our senior class is filled with young adults possessing great minds and large hearts, they have been important bridge builders for TJ. Our seniors redoubled efforts this year to connect with and mentor younger students. We had seniors represent the diversity of our school in a widely published Washington Post article about college admissions. This class has also worked earnestly to honor past traditions while thinking of new ways to build school spirit. Thank you to the Class of 2019 for leaving a positive legacy. On behalf of the entire faculty and staff, we wish you the very best and we will miss you.

WHAT PARTING WORDS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE CLASS OF 2019? Instead of “Be Good At School”, your mandate is now to “Be Good At Life”. Best of luck, sheep! WHAT WAS YOUR MOST DIFFICULT MOMENT IN DEALING WITH THE CLASS OF 2019? Getting the class organized was a perennial challenge. Our students couldn’t even get a Skip Day organized successfully, now imagine large-scale fundraising and events. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT WITH THE CLASS OF 2019? After a bumpy three years at Homecoming and getting beaten by the Freshmen when we were Sophomores, it was really fun to be the loudest, most spirited class and sweep every pep rally during homecoming. Winning the first-ever Most Spirited Teacher Award didn’t hurt, either.

WHAT PARTING WORDS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE CLASS OF 2019? 2-0-1-9 You’re the class we can’t outshine WHEN YOU THINK OF THE CLASS OF 2019, WHAT ADJECTIVES COME TO MIND? 3 C’s: classy, creative, considerate. WHAT WAS YOUR MOST DIFFICULT MOMENT IN DEALING WITH THE CLASS OF 2019? Situations of procrastination under tight deadlines.

tjMEDIA SENIOR STAFF SAYS GOODBYE Our Purpose and Motivation tjTODAY Seniors || Mijin Cho, Sabria Kazmim, Shruthi Nyshadham

E

veryone has opinions. Everyone has experiences. Everyone has a story. Journalism has always been about unearthing those stories and telling them to the world. This year, we are particularly proud of having highlighted the stories of people who aren’t often heard. We have had the privilege of listening to student’s perseverance through mental disorders, to people’s niche hobbies, and to innovator’s ambitious goals for technology. It has been an honor to share these stories from our community, and that’s what we will miss the most: the chance each of you gave us to be involved in a part of your lives. Because behind every magazine is a team of people who make it possible, spending countless hours reporting, writing, editing, and designing to bring the words on the page to life. But if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that the team behind tjTODAY extends beyond the walls of Room 31. To every single person who accepted an interview request, posed for a photoshoot, visited our website, rifled through the magazine, or trusted us to share your story, thank you.

The same way we hope that we’ve left our unique mark at TJ, tjTODAY has left the three of us with an undeniable love of telling stories. We are no longer passive listeners but seekers. Writers. Storytellers. Empathizers. We could not doubt the lessons of empathy we’ve learned throughout the past four years in sharing universal human stories, and we hope that you will continue that mission of cultivating a sense of commonality within our community. Thank you TJ, we will miss you. Goodbye. Photo by Erinn Harris

Y

es, yearbook is a class. Yes, there’s only been 6 people in it these last two years. Yes, we make the entire book from scratch. When I joined yearbook freshman year, I didn’t know any of this either. Since then, I’ve loved this journey of uninsightful quotes from sophomore boys and telling teachers that students find them intimidating - and then interviewing them about it. Through yearbook, I’ve found that the TJ community does exist and that each of you is kinda incredible. That’s what “Impossible? Try me.” is meant to say, by the way. Yearbook has pushed me to my limits - how many hours I can spend working in Room 31, how many clubs i can drop by in a single 8th period, how many times I can redesign the cover. But of course, it was worth it. For all the chips and salsa and for the story of TJ we got to tell this year. As our stories keep unfolding, I’ll hope you’ll look back at this piece of our history captured in hardcover.

t some point in everyone’s life, we’ve all doubted our own abilities. But we have to remember not to compare ourselves to others: we’re important, too. This year, I’ve stressed over deadlines. I’ve been tired, frustrated, and complained about not liking my designs, but I never once considered not having the book completed for everyone by Photo by Jiny Cho summer. Every book I’ve worked on is important to me, and I hope I can convey why that is so to you. It doesn’t matter if you don’t remember me, but I just hope our yearbook can help you remember the happy memories from high school. Whether you’ve just finished your first or last year, congratulate yourself, because you’ve made it this far. See, it wasn’t impossible! Enjoy your summer; you’ve earned it.

Reflecting on New Beginnings Teknos Seniors|| Danny Huffman and Lilia Qian

T

he cover of this year’s Teknos is a departure from its sleek, futuristic predecessors—its sketchbook-like style celebrates not a dream for the future, but the discoveries and observations that have propelled innovation at every step toward the present. In its thirtieth anniversary, this year’s Teknos reflects on science—past and present—recognizing the years of questions and answers on which today’s TJ is built, and looking up and out as it branches into new directions. Building off the pioneering work of last year’s staff, we continued to make past years’ papers and articles accessible through Teknos’s website, teknos.org. Moreover, the journal began to employ the website as a medium to publish student research not published in the physical journal. In honor of Teknos’s thirtieth anniversary, we held our very first cover art contest, which granted students the opportunity to contribute to Teknos in a novel way. This school year also marked the start of TekTalk, Teknos’s own podcast wherein Teknos staff discuss science headlines and interview students and teachers, providing a new venue for others to learn about TJ’s scientific community. We trust that all of these initiatives represent only the start of Teknos’s exploration of new ways to communicate science. Rather than a famous public figure or a TJ staff member, the foreword of this year’s journal was written by a former TJ student and 2005 Teknos contributor, reflecting our desire to celebrate the people that have helped make Teknos possible, whether it’s today’s student researchers who supply the very substance from which Teknos is made, or Mrs. Seavey, whose sharp and insightful critique reminded us to always aim higher. In addition, we would

like to thank the school custodians, who graciously accommodated our frequent afterschool meetings. Many thanks also go to the diligent, creative, and friendly editing team, who brought new ideas, positive attitudes, and a Photo courtesy of Lilia Qian bright atmosphere to every meeting. Finally, we express our eternal gratitude to Dr. Torbert, without whom Teknos could not function. Dr. Torbert, thank you for staying after school with us each week, for your interest in our progress and kind encouragement, and for your support every step of the way. We could not have done it without you. Although our time with Teknos has come to an end, we hope that our club traditions will carry on to be shaped, colored, and adapted into the future. More than anything, we hope that Teknos will be as memorable and cherished an experience as it has been for us. While we are sad to leave Sys Lab lunch meetings, trips around the school to escape our ruts, and bearing witness to the whiteboard births of our club mascots, we trust that Teknos is in good hands, and hope that it will continue to produce not only scientific works, but also important, happy memories for all those involved.

Hard Work and Team Work Threshold Seniors || Alex Kao-Sowa, MJ Old, Wenbo Wu

T

hreshold’s themes this year were Vacuity, emptiness, especially empty-headedness, and Reverie, daydream. Both can be taken to refer to the wanderings of the mind, which is very appropriate. Threshold is the wonderful magazine it is because of where our minds wander. We all walk the same halls, but our thoughts and our pens traverse the personal wilds of love and music, pain and poetry. This year the whole staff pulled through technical issues, late nights, and hard deadlines, and produced an amazing magazine we’re all proud of. The skill and dedication of the underclassmen staff has been a yearlong inspiration. We forged enduring friendships and some amazing memories this year staying after school to finish spreads, reading all the submissions (truly a strange cross-section of

TJ’s collective subconscious), and lounging around in Ms. Porcelli’s room. To the editors of next year: whenever you need advice or a cheerleader, we’re only a text away. And we know you’re going to be great.

THIS IS

FAREWELL “

I think the most important thing I’ve learned [as part of TJMedia Broadcast] is the COMMUNICATION SKILLS. Even though I’m very outgoing, I really hated talking to people and asking them to do things for me, especially during breaks when we had to ask for videos from people. I NEEDED TO TOUGHEN UP and not really care about what people thought anymore, so I could confront people more easily.

Honestly, sometimes IT DOES FEEL LIKE HOME HERE. It feels a lot more comfortable here than my own house because I’ve spent so much of my adolescence here; I spent my 15th, 16th and 17th birthdays here. Because my birthdays are on the last day of school, I have MEMORIES OF BEING RIGHT THERE in Noble Commons and everyone singing happy birthday to me.
