Dedicated to Bringing the Best of Texas Sport Karate Since 1998
2015 EDITION
TKO (Texas Karate Organization) Sport Karate League - 19126 Rebel Yell Dr. Katy TX 77449—(281) 781-5181—TKOKick@Yahoo.com
Bringing the Best of Texas Sport Karate Since 1998! Competition is one of the greatest motivating factors for students. It sharpens skill, develops drive, build camaraderie, harnesses school spirit, and develops confidence. Today Texas competition has grown in popularity. Black belts, advanced belts, intermediates and beginners have more events to choose to compete in as compared to previous years where forms and sparring were their only choices. For example, one competitor could enter weapons (musical and non-musical), forms (creative or traditional), stick combat, point sparring, continuous sparring, self-defense and breaking just to name a few. Our goal is to promote and elevate Sport Martial Arts and we are glad to see that more and more dojos and competitors are getting involved. Not only is the TKO League getting noticed, so are everyone who is involved with the circuit. The stronger each school gets, the stronger the whole Sport martial arts movement becomes. Since types of events are no longer limited, why should martial artists be limited to competing in one organization? With the birth of Texas Karate Organization (TKO) existing organizations, can sanction with TKO using their own unique rules at each of their tournaments and still be related through a common tie. Being sanctioned by TKO, promoters can expect a steady growth at their event, which will create a higher level of competition among the competitors.
Wayne Nguyen—TKO Founder
We have established a rating system for tournaments and athletes, as well as judging parameters that will serve to elevate the standards and quality of Sport martial arts. For 2015 we will have two ways for competitors to be ranked and qualify for State Finals…”Qualifier” and “Non Qualifier”! Tournaments that uses TKO rules and divisions will be considered a TKO “Qualifier”, and tournaments that does not use TKO rules will be considered a “Non Qualifier”. This simply means “Qualifier” is the top ranking, and “Non Qualifier” is the secondary ranking at STATE FINALS. “Non Qualifier” tournaments can accumulate points, but will be below the “Qualifier” at State. There is a total of 5 TKO Conferences throughout Texas with each Conference having its own “Qualifier” tournaments. The top 8 players (1st –8th place) from each Conference with the most points will earn top ranking at State. THE MORE YOU COMPETE AND WIN AT TKO QUALIFIERS, THE BETTER CHANCE YOU WILL RECEIVE THE #1 SEED AT STATE! The state tournament is open to anyone regardless of being a T.K.O. member; however, all T.K.O. members will be eligible to be seeded (placed in a preferred position of competition) at the state finals. Non seeded competitors will be seeded as “Wild Card” players. The winner of the wild card players will then advance with the seeded players to compete for the state title. We will be using TKO rules for the T.K.O. state finals. All competitors are required to email or mail in their tabulated points before the November, 2015 deadline. The season begins February 1 and ends November of each year. A copy of the official TKO rules can be downloaded on our website. TKO promises to endeavor to bring sport karate in Texas to a new level. The TKO publications will unite formerly separate leagues by making martial artists’ names familiar to each other and by forming friendships that span the state. You can expect to see TKO publications recognizing new and up-andcoming faces as well as reviewing current tournaments. We look forward to another fantastic year and hope to see you real soon!

2014 TKO STATE FINALS By Wayne Nguyen On Saturday, November 15, 2014, TKO League hosted its annual State Finals tournament, The TKO State Finals Karate Championships. For the 16th consecutive year, Galveston, Texas welcomed a record number of competitors traveling from around Texas and New Mexico. The event also welcomed hundreds of spectators whom witnessed competitors challenge themselves and others in this formidable pursuit of the Texas sport karate spirit. One of the most exciting aspects about going to a TKO State Finals is getting to watch performances from the best martial artists from around the region. It really opens your eyes to the fact that karate is not just what goes on at your dojo– there’s a whole other world of martial arts out there. Plus, there’s a good chance that some of the competitors you see at the tournament will go on to star in movies and TV shows. For example, did you know that 12 year old Seth Lee, who is well-known on the karate tournament circuit, is now starring in an upcoming movie with Ben Affleck? In the morning and early afternoon, the preliminary rounds served as the battleground for our junior and senior competitors, displaying their skill in weapons, creative kata, traditional kata, stick combat, vortex continuous and point sparring. Many of our competitors were competing at State for the first time, while others were experienced veterans. Experience aside, all competitors showed spirit, respect, and good sportsmanship, three important values to martial artists. TKO State Finals saw some of the most intense weapon divisions performed in Texas, and many of the performances showed excellent control of body and mind in the execution of these routines. Some, like World Champion Trace Megellas from Dallas, achieved a well-deserved first place. Magellas, earning first place in the 16-17 Junior Black Belt Weapons division, performed with his bo with the intensity and focus of a champion. He was followed by another World Champion, Paige Bantum from Las Vegas, Nevada, who won in the adult women weapons division, and Angel Hernandez from Houston, who won adult men. Other black belt division winners were Rebecca Gonzalez from Laredo, Addie Perry from Fort Worth, Alex Garza from Mesquite, Alex Mancillas from Brownsville, world champion Nikolas Charalambides from Houston, and Brenda Gutierrez from Laredo. In the kata (forms) division, a key ingredient when performing kata is to imagine that one is actually fighting one or more opponents as the kata is executed. This visualization transforms the kata from a series of strictly mechanical movements into a meaningful and realistic pattern. In the Adult Black Belt Kata division, Veteran Bryce Marchington, from Hobbs, New Mexico won the 35+ Creative Forms and David Vines from Dallas won the 45+ Black Belt Traditional Forms. Both demonstrating that age and experience can overcome youth and skills. Yaresi Perez won the 18+ Women Traditional Forms, and Rebecca Gonzalez won 35+ Women Traditional Forms. The Junior Black Belt Kata divisions were much larger than last year with only few divisions having low turnout. Some winners, like up-and-coming Connor Gilliam, showed his high flying kicks and wowed the crowd. Others like Beaux Hamilton from Abilene and George Garrido from Dallas both won first in the Junior Black Belt Traditional Kata division, and Addie Perry from Fort Worth took her fourth state title for the day.
7
As the afternoon progressed, the Adult Black Belt sparring divisions took place. Both men and women are divided by weight, which makes for evenly matched bouts in the light, middle, heavyweight and executive categories. After an intense and spirited bout, Texas powerhouse Chance Turner from Austin again dominated the men's heavy weight category after battling it out with fighter Andrew Jeter from Hobbs, New Mexico. Despite Andrew’s aggressive forward movements and persistence, Chance’s sharp kicks and powerful punches proved too strong to overcome. Legendary fighters continued to stand strong in the executive heavy weight category. However, with both power and precision, Bryce Marchington from Hobbs, New Mexico claimed first place. One of Texas’ top fighters, Joe Gillum from Austin, took second place and Dona Pettway from Houston took third place. Although these men proved to be formidable opponents, they could not match the energy, ferocity and stamina of Marchington. In the men's lightweight category, seasoned fighter, Francisco Lara from Houston, dominated the men’s lightweight category with his calm, focused energy and sharp punches. Angel Hernandez, also from Houston, made an impression with his intense fighting spirit and landed second place. The men's middleweight category was won by Lance Smith. Derrick Wilson from Houston took the middle category. And Anthony Allen from Dallas won the executive light weight. Rounding out the women category, Yaresi Perez from Houston won the 18+ and Kiki D'Aniell from Abilene won the executive women’s division.
Night Finals Kick-off The TKO State nighttime finals is the highlight of the event with a packed and enthusiastic audience. With hundreds of people in attendance, the competitors were energized and ready to perform. Opening the event this year was a spectacular Chinese Lion Dance show which had three different lions wowing the audience with their amazing acts. This was then followed by Vortex Continuous Sparring exhibition that had some intense moments of continuous hitting and takedowns. Next it was TKO’s newest division, the fast paced and action-packed “Stick Combat” matches. For all intents and purposes, “stick” is also referred to as arnis, eskrima and kali, all referencing the same family of Filipino weaponbased martial arts and fighting systems. The matches are set at two minutes with the top two fighters dueling it out on stage to be declared the new State Champion. In the junior division, it was Christian Montifar vs. Sean Nguyen, both from Houston, battling it out for the state title. You could hear the loud popping noises made by both fighters’ sticks. Christian took the early lead, but Sean kept the match close. In the end, Christian was just too quick for Sean and ended up capturing his first state title. In the men’s division, it was heavy weight Larry Wong vs. Jeffrey Hepler, both from Houston. The dual was a nail biter with both fighters going back and forth. It all came down to the very last second when Larry Wong hit Jeffrey in the arm, which earned him the championship ring. Lastly, it was the breaking battle. This was also a world record breaking attempt by World Breaking Champion Larry Fields. You could feel the excitement in the air when Larry Fields attempted to set the record by breaking 18 bricks! Unfortunately the record was not broken and we're not sure who won the breaking challenge for the championship ring, but it was still a fantastic opening show!
8
Grand Championship Finals The grand champion runoff started with the Junior Grand Forms. It was stacked with talent, both local and from afar. The junior event opened with Trace Megellas from Dallas, a young pioneer of extreme bo kata. Trace executed one of the most impressive bo performances ever seen in Texas history. Up next was Connor Gilliam from Houston with his open kata, showing off, once again, his high kicks and acrobatic abilities. Then it was up and coming super star Kobe Shaw who was impressive with his intense performance and dynamic athleticism. The night was all about that bo with Alex Garza from Mesquite incorporating extreme kicks into his flashy bo routine. Bringing sexy back, Alex Mancillas from Brownsville took his top off and performed an intense double kama routine. Then it was back to basics with Beaux Hamilton from Abilene who demonstrated his traditional routine with clean technique and solid stances. Next it was Nikolas Charalambides from Houston performing his unique double sword routine with an impressive manipulation of the sword. Nikolas was followed by TKO’s youngest black belt competitor Addie Perry from Fort Worth. Addie continued to amaze the audience with her talent performing an impressive bo routine. Lastly, George Garrido performed a flawless traditional form with great deep stances and lots of energy. In the end, Trace Megellas defended his junior grand title for the third consecutive year and took home the prestigious gold championship ring. The sparring event started with the Women's Sparring Grand championships on stage. Both the fighters needed to be physically ready for the ultimate challenge. Yaresi Perez from Houston and Kiki D’Aniell from Abilene opened the night with Kiki landing a nice backfist to Yaresi, and Kiki moved ahead. The match was close and intense as Yaresi mounted a last minute comeback, but it was not enough as Kiki took the grand championship title and her first gold championship ring. For the men, it was Chance Turner from Austin vs. Lance Smith from Hobbs, New Mexico in the semi round of the grand finals. Lance fought smart and was able to counter the size and speed of Chance. It was clear that Lance seriously wanted to beat Chance, but Chance’s speed and quickness eventually took its toll on Lance. The fight was entertaining with plenty of action, but in the end Chance was the winner and advanced on to fight Francisco Lara from Houston for the Grand Championship Finals. The men’s sparring Grand Finals was set with all eyes on Chance Turner and Francisco Lara. Both are team mates, but they are also warriors in the ring. The smaller and younger Francisco vs. the older and experienced Chance Turner. When the two faced each other in the ring, it was clear that they are ready to battle. That night was no exception as Francisco was determined to defeat Turner for the Men's Sparring Grand Championship Title. Francisco fought hard and was able to counter the size and speed of Chance. The fight was back and forth but in the second half, Chance stepped it up a bit to counter Francisco's strategy. The two found themselves close to the buzzer, but in the end, it was Chance Turner taking the grand championship win for the evening and capturing the gold ring, plus $300 cash! Overall, the 2014 TKO State Finals provided great entertainment and a chance to see amazing performances from athletes at the top of their game and performing at their best. Each year the League continues to grow and more martial artist from all across Texas are taking part in our league. We look forward to doing it again, and we hope to see you at the 2015 TKO State Finals in Galveston, TX.

It is the referee and/or judges' decision whether or not the follow-up technique is controlled. Two points will be awarded to a Competitor who executes a sweep or throwing technique, only if he remains on his feet and follows with a controlled punch or kick. Any legal technique that doubles over the opponent will be scored two points. Any thrust, kick, strike or other legal technique that connects and instantly downs the opponent so that his hands, hands and knees, or hands and hip touch the mat will be scored as three points. If Competitor legally downs his opponent, and opponent cannot rise and continue after five seconds, then Competitor is declared the winner/ What you CAN do: All kicks to the legs and sweeps to the legs are allowed, with the exception of a direct blow to the front of the knee. All kicks are allowed to the head, body, and legs, except for directly to front of knee, or groin Striking / punching / elbows to the body, and legs, except for the neck, face, head, directly to front of knee, or groin A Competitor may grab his opponent's shoulder or uniform (arm or leg) for three seconds only while executing a technique. Hand must release hold after three seconds. A Competitor may encircle the opponent's leg with one arm when executing a controlled throw. Throw must land opponent on back, side, or stomach. When grabbing from the front with two hands, both hands must reach to the same side of the opponent's body (one on arm, the other hand on shoulder or around neck), when pulling opponent into a technique – but only for 3 seconds. If both Competitors are grabbing each other, creating a stalemate, the referee will break them apart immediately. This is a martial arts tournament (i.e.- contest) and as such martial arts etiquette (i.e. – respect for others and self, humility, and self discipline) should be practiced at ALL times, both in victory and defeat – SHOW CLASS!! Show proper concern if your opponent is injured. Always apologize before resuming competition, if you were the cause of an accidental injury.
