ronically, the facility widely r ecognized as one of the best collegiate baseball par ks in America is bar ely r ecognizable. UFCU D isch-Falk F ield, which begins its 37th season of hosting Longhorns baseball, has gone through a massive two-year renovation. On Aug. 1, 2006, U niversity Federal Credit Union (UFCU) secured naming rights to the facility . I n ex change for the naming rights, UFCU is contributing $13.1 million o ver 15 y ears to ward the r etirement of debt that is financing the recently completed renovation of the facility. The renovation of UFCU Disch-Falk Field added a plethora of new seating opportunities. The lower bowl was expanded 135 feet down each foul line and field-level box seats w ere added betw een the dugouts, bringing fans closer to the action than ever before. The field also features a seating berm down the leftfield line and an obser vation patio do wn the right-field line. The new design also incorporates 11 suites, making UFCU Disch-Falk Field a premier business entertainment destination. One of the main goals of the r enovation was to impr ove the amenities for the fans and offer a mor e enjoyable gameday experience. This season, spectators will spend less time waiting and mor e time watching their belo ved Longhorns. The improved UFCU D isch-Falk Field boasts mor e than double the amount of concession areas, box office windows and rest rooms. Improving the aesthetics of UFCU D isch-Falk F ield also was taken into consideration for the r enovation. The v enue featur es an enclosed concourse twice the size of the pr evious concourse, with appr oximately 20 feet added to the width. The stadium also featur es a brick and glass faรงade similar to that used in the renovations of Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The players are benefiting gr eatly from the r enovation as w ell. New locker rooms, skills dev elopment ar ea and batting cages w ere par t of the facelift at UFCU D isch-Falk F ield, as w ell as ne w str ength and conditioning, athletic training and team meeting areas.

UFCU DISCH-FALK FIELD Home of the Longhor ns Prior to the renovations, a new scoreboard and video screen were erected during the 2005 season, giving Texas access to the latest technology to enhance the stadium environment. UFCU Disch-Falk Field, named for two former Longhorns coaches — the late B illy D isch and the late B ibb F alk — was authoriz ed in 1973 when it became apparent that the main campus of the University needed the land occupied by Clark Field. The field was completed in time for the 1975 season, and it opened on Feb. 17, 1975, when the ev entual national champion Longhorns sw ept a doubleheader from St. Mary’s by scores of 4-0 and 11-0. The field was dedicated on April 19, 1975, when the Longhorns swept a doubleheader from TCU by scores of 18-3 and 14-0. UFCU Disch-Falk Field was originally completed at a cost of $2.5 million and the ar tificial sur face in the infield ar ea was r eplaced in summer 1979. Entirely ne w ar tificial sur faces w ere installed in 1985 and 1999 befor e the FieldTurf addition in fall 2008. The top crowd to see a collegiate game at UFCU Disch-Falk Field came during the NCAA Central R egional Tournament on M ay 19, 1982, when 8,000 fans watched the Longhorns defeat O klahoma. The largest cr owd, ho wever, watched an exhibition game betw een the Longhorns and the Texas Rangers on April 5, 1977. About 10,000 fans, some of whom sat on the r oped off warning track in the outfield, attended the r ecord-setting game. In 2010, the Longhorns set UFCU Disch-Falk Field records for overall attendance (256,278) and av erage attendance (6,571). The outfield fence is 10 feet high (20 feet in center field), with dimensions being 340 feet down the left field
line, 325 to right field and 400 to straightaway center field. In the power alleys, it drops off quickly from 405 feet to 375 feet. The left field foul line runs almost due north and the right field foul line r uns almost due east.
Monster Shots Since the opening of UFCU Disch-Falk Field in February 1975, only 35 players have cleared the 20-foot high “Monster” in straightaway centerfield. The Monster, 400 feet from home plate, has been clear ed a total of 40 times. Below is a list of Longhor ns who have hit the ball out of the deepest part of UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

PHILLIPS 66 BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP AT&T Bricktown Ballpark he Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship returns to Oklahoma City’s AT&T Bricktown Ballpark for the annual eight-team championship in 2011. The Brick, which was opened on April 2, 1998 and seats 13,066 fans, ser ves as the home facility for the Class AAA O klahoma City Redhawks. The facility is hosting the 11th baseball championship in the league ’s 15-year tenure. Previous championships hav e set almost annual attendance r ecords while playing at thr ee sites to date: All-S ports S tadium (1997) in O klahoma City, AT&T Bricktown Ballpark (1998-2001, ’03, ’05-10), and Rangers B allpark in Arlington, Texas (2002, ’04). Past championship winners include Kansas (2006), N ebraska (1999-2001, ’05), Oklahoma (1997), Oklahoma State (2004), Texas (2002-03, 08-09), Texas A&M (2007, ’10) and Texas Tech (1998).
T
CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT After playing a two-division, pool-play format for the championship between 2006-10, Big 12 Confer ence athletics dir ectors approved a pr oposal from the league’s baseball coaches to change the format of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship. The event returns to a double-elimination format. The eight teams that qualify will be split into two four-team pools and will use double-elimination to determine a winner of each pool. Those winners will meet in a one-game championship. The championship will star t on Wednesday, May 25, with four games followed by four games on Thursday. The Friday and S aturday schedules will be determined by the number of games needed to determine the winners in each pool. The championship game will be held on S unday. Big 12 baseball coaches wanted to make the change for two reasons: First, the double-elimination format mirr ors what is used in the N CAA tournament. Second, the curr ent four-team pool play format was determined b y head-tohead records and last y ear the two teams that met in the championship game (Baylor and Texas A&M) were determined before Saturday’s four games. Those games were basically meaningless.
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
50
The event has been contested in O klahoma City 12 of the last 14 y ears (All Sports Stadium — 1997; Bricktown Ballpark — 1998-2001, ’03, ’05-10). In 2002, the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship moved to the largest postseason venue (with the exception of football and outdoor track and field) in Big 12 histor y. Rangers B allpark in Arlington, Texas, home of the American League’s Texas Rangers, set a national r ecord with 150,196 tickets sold for 14 games. In the two y ears (2002, ’04) at Rangers B allpark, the tournament had 275,824 tickets sold for 27 games — an average of more than 10,000 per game. The 1999 ev ent had then-r ecord fan suppor t with a r ecord 129,334 attendance for 13 games. Fans also had the opportunity to watch an expanded, eightteam event (from the previous six-team contests in 1997 and ’98) at Oklahoma City. One year after that r ecord turnout, the 2000 P hillips 66 Championship had the third-largest turnout in Division I baseball history with 126,482 tickets sold for 14 games. In 1997, the initial six-team Big 12 tournament drew a thennation’s best total attendance of 56,742. The Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship has received consistent television coverage over the y ears. FSN and its r egional affiliates hav e carried each title game as well as the “if necessar y” contests in the 1997 and ’ 98 classics in Oklahoma City.

LONGHORNS TRADITIONS We Are Texas
School Colors The colors burnt orange and white were officially adopted on May 10, 1900, after a thr ee-cornered fight between students at the Main University, the School of M edicine and ex-students. The colors w ere first used in spring 1884. Traditional burnt orange was UT ’s first color, but when dy e was in shor t supply during World War II, a brighter orange was used. Longhorns football coach D arrell Royal reinstated “ Texas Orange” during the 1962 season, and it has been used ev er since.
BEVO UT’s first BEVO was brought to campus by Steve Pinckney and made his debut in 1916 during Texas’ 21-7 victor y over Texas A&M in A ustin. After the game, some Aggies branded BEVO I with “13-0,” signifying the scor e of the pr evious year’s upset win. It was long believed that the mascot’s name, “BEVO,” deriv ed fr om the altering of that 13-0 branding. This is a color ful yarn, but a quick inspection of historical records and ne wspaper accounts r eveal that while the Longhorn was indeed branded, he had been dubbed “BEVO” months before, and the brand never changed. BEVO XIV, the current mascot, was intr oduced to the Longhorn family at Texas’ 65-0 victory over North Texas on Sept. 4, 2004. BEVO XIV r eplaced BE VO XIII, who had been on duty since 1988 and was the longest tenured BEVO. BEVO is tended b y the S ilver Spurs, a men ’s honorary service organization. The Silver Spurs were created with the purpose of being responsible for the care of BEVO and to provide philanthropy around the city of Austin. The Silver Spurs/BEVO center, located on the east side of the stadium, is dedicated to the 14 BE VOs who have served since 1916.
Longhorn Nickname Mr. D.A. F rank saw to it that The U niversity of Texas’ teams became known as the “Longhorns.” I n 1903, he wr ote a letter to “ The Firing Line” column in The D aily Texan suggesting the nickname. Alex Weisburg, who was editor-in-chief of The Daily Texan in 1903, told Mr. Frank, “D.A., hereafter, in ev ery sports article, call the team ‘ The Longhorns,’ and w e’ll soon have it named.” These instructions were followed and passed do wn for several years, according to Mr. Frank, and “along about 1906 or 1907, the name became official ...”
Victory Signals The UT Tower bathed in orange light stands as a beacon of the Longhorns ’ success. The complete to wer is lit orange with the N o. “1” display ed on each side when a team wins an NCAA championship and to mar k special achiev ements, as determined b y the University president. It also is orange when a B ig 12 championship is won.

NEIGHBORHOOD LONGHORNS Helping the Community n 1991, The U niversity of Texas launched a joint v enture with Motorola, Texas Instruments, NationsBank and Temple Inland to establish an education incentive program for youth ages 8-14. Other agencies involved in cr eating the frame work for the pr ogram w ere the A ustin Independent School D istrict (AISD), the City of A ustin P arks and R ecreation, the A ustin H ousing A uthority, and the A ustin Police Department. “Linking Community with E ducation” is mor e than the motto for the program. It has become the working foundation for this outstanding collaboration. P articipants hav e demonstrated their dedication to academics b y meeting the criteria necessar y to participate in the program. The U niversity, meanwhile, has demonstrated its commitment b y the institutional involvement of The University of Texas Intercollegiate Athletics for M en and Women, The U niversity of Texas D ivision of R ecreational Sports, The University of Texas Volunteer Center, The University of Texas Students’ Association, the Frank Erwin Center, and the Bass Concert Hall. In or der to qualify for education incentiv es, N eighborhood Longhorns participants must hav e per fect attendance, par ticipate in a r eading component at their school and must maintain at least a 75 per cent av erage in each class. In addition, Neighborhood Longhorns members are given assistance with their school wor k from University of Texas student v olunteers. During the past seven years, approximately 3,700 UT students hav e assisted in tutoring children at 26 AISD sites. Last y ear, 180 UT students provided 6,600 hours of volunteer tutoring to AISD students.
I
RECENT NEWS The Neighborhood Longhorns Program, now reorganized under the administration of the O ffice of the P resident, is continuing its pledge to help motivate y outh as they striv e for ex cellence in education b y having UT athletes speak to par ticipants during the course of the y ear. These athletes use their image and the appeal of spor ts to encourage the childr en to participate in the program, stay in school and r eceive their high school diplomas. In an effort to improve services, more educational resources also have been channeled into the pr ogram. I n fact, during 2001-02, U niversity F ederal Credit Union sponsor ed the M ath Challenge, which is designed to impr ove students’ math skills. D uring the 2002-03 school y ear, SBC joined this effor t to improve math and technology skills.
A PROMISING FUTURE

Many N eighborhood Longhorns members do not hav e the necessar y resources to achiev e their academic goals. F ortunately, the N eighborhood Longhorns P rogram has established a S uperstar S avings A ccount P rogram through the University Federal Credit Union. The Superstar Savings Account Program offers par ticipants the oppor tunity to earn a $100 scholarship savings account opened in their names for academic achiev ement. If a recipient of a scholarship savings account attends The University of Texas, the value of the savings account will be matched.
