PRESS ROW PREVIEW Kentucky Wildcats vs. St. John’s Red Storm C AT S C R U I S E PA S T P O RT L A N D Darius Miller scored 19 points as No. 2 Kentucky routed Portland, 87-63, on Nov. 26 in the Wildcats’ final tuneup before playing St. John’s and No. 1 North Carolina this week. Terrence Jones also scored 19 points and Anthony Davis added 13 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks, but Miller started 37-of-38 games last year and his senior presence has steadied a team filled with sophomores and freshmen. Kentucky has won every game by double digits, but Portland gave the Wildcats plenty to work on in the coming days after the Pilots challenged them with sharp outside shooting and won the rebounding battle, 39-38. Kentucky used an 18-3 first-half run to take a double-digit lead. After Portland pulled within six in the second half, the Wildcats put on a full-court press as part of an 18-4 run that put the game out of reach. Nemanja Mitrovic went 6-of-12 from 3-point range and finished with 20 points for the Pilots. UK head coach John Calipari said last week he wanted the Wildcats to play more fluid without him having to call plays from the sideline before this week’s tough games. Kentucky responded with its most efficient game so far, committing just four turnovers, its fewest since committing just two in a win against Utah in the second round of the 1993 NCAA tournament.

C A L I PA R I B R E A K S R E C O R D I N R U P P With UK’s season-opening victory over Marist, Calipari recorded his 34th straight win in Rupp Arena as UK’s head coach. It broke former UK head coach Rick Pitino’s longest streak of 33 games in the venue. His winning streak currently sits at 36.
IN-SEASON TOURNAMENT SUCCESS Since Calipari came to Kentucky in 2009, the Wildcats have had great success in their “in-season tournaments.” In 2009, the Wildcats claimed the Cancun Classic Championship and last season, UK advanced to the finals of the Maui Invitational, before falling to UConn. This season the Cats were crowned champions of the 2011 Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament.
CHAMPIONS Kentucky captured its second in-season tournament championship in three years, defeating Penn State (85-47) and Old Dominion (62-52) en route to the 2011 Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament title. Doron Lamb led UK offensively in two games, averaging 17.0 points in the tournament. The Kentucky defense flexed its defensive muscle holding opponents to just 29.3 percent from the field while posting a rebounding margin of plus-16 and blocking 17 shots.

Head Coach JOHN CALIPARI Kentucky’s 22nd Head Men’s Basketball Coach
T
hird-year Kentucky head coach John Calipari kept the momentum going in his second year at the helm of the Wildcats, guiding Kentucky to its 14th Final Four. In doing so, he became only the second coach to lead three different schools to a Final Four (UMass-1996; Memphis-2008; Kentucky-2011). In a season that was labeled as a “rebuilding effort” where Calipari and the Cats were supposed to struggle after losing an unprecedented five firstround picks in the 2010 NBA Draft, Kentucky instead reloaded as Calipari guided UK to its 27th SEC tournament championship, kept his unbeaten record at Rupp Arena (33-0, tied for the longest such streak in Rupp Arena history) alive and collected his 500th career on-court win. Upon being named head coach on April 1, 2009, Calipari continued to work his magic of resurrecting once proud programs, taking an NIT team in 2009 to the 2010 NCAA Elite Eight. Along the way he led the Wildcats to a No. 1 ranking (UK’s first since 2003), the program’s 44th SEC championship and 26th SEC tournament title. The honors continued after the season as Calipari became the first coach in UK history to receive the Adolph Rupp National Coach of the Year award. He then watched as five of his players were selected in the first round of the 2010 NBA Draft, the first time
a school has produced five first round picks. Among those picks was the first Wildcat taken as the No. 1 overall pick, John Wall. In his inaugural season as head coach of the Wildcats, Calipari posted his fifth straight 30-win season, the only coach in NCAA Division I history to do so. In addition to the Rupp National Coach of the Year, Calipari was also named the Associated Press SEC Coach of the Year. When he led Kentucky back to the No. 1 spot in the country, Calipari became one of only two coaches (Frank McGuire) in NCAA history to lead three teams to a No. 1 ranking. He led UMass to a No. 1 ranking in 1995 and 1996 and he led Memphis to the No. 1 spot in the 2008 season. Much like he did at UMass, when his players graduated at nearly 80 percent, Calipari has stressed academics. Fifteen of his last 18 seniors that came through the Memphis program have earned their bachelor’s degrees and the four seniors under Cal at Kentucky have all earned their degrees. The Wildcats posted a 3.14 grade point average (GPA) in the 2011 spring semester, the highest semester GPA in recent years, and an overall 3.015 GPA for the 2010-11 season. Since the 2005-06 season, Coach Cal ranks as the winningest coach over the last six years. After bringing the University of Massachusetts 16

basketball program to national prominence in the ’90s and resurrecting the Memphis basketball program in the 2000s, Calipari became the 22nd coach in UK history, and is the seventh in the last 80 years. Following his second season at UK, Calipari’s overall on-court record soared to 509-152 for an impressive .770 winning percentage. His 509 wins are the second-most in NCAA Division I history in the first 19 years, Roy Williams being the other. Calipari’s 77.0 winning percentage is the thirdhighest among active NCAA Division I coaches with 10 years experience at college basketball’s Division I level, trailing only Mark Few and Roy Williams. On the NCAA Division I list for winning percentage for all coaches (minimum 10 years), Calipari is in 10th place and ahead of Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim, Bob Huggins and Lute Olson. With his five 30-win seasons, Calipari has seven for his career, which is fourth most for a head coach in NCAA Division I history. For his career (19 years), Calipari has 17 20-win seasons and 11 25-win campaigns. In 1996, Calipari moved from UMass to the NBA after leading the Minutemen to the Final Four. For his efforts, Calipari was named Naismith National Coach of the Year. Calipari led the Tigers to the 2008 NCAA title game, and Memphis’ 38 wins in 2007-08 made him the winningest coach for a single season in NCAA history. As a result, Calipari was named Naismith National Coach of the Year for a second time in his career. He is only the second coach to receive the honor multiple times since the award’s inception in 1987. Duke’s Krzyzewski is the other to do so. Calipari, the 2009 Sports Illustrated National Coach of the Year, led the Tigers to nine straight 20-win campaigns and nine consecutive postseason appearances, the only Memphis coach to do that. He posted 252 wins — 28 wins per season — as the Tigers’ head coach, making him the winningest coach in school history. Calipari compiled a 193-71 record (.731) during his eight-year career at Massachusetts, including a 108-44 mark (.684) in Atlantic 10 play. In addition to five straight NCAA tournaments, UMass also made two appearances in the NIT, advancing to the NIT final four in 1991. The 1990-91 season was the first of six straight seasons in which the Minutemen won at least 20 games. Calipari’s personal 20-win streak has reached the 17-season mark after 35 wins in his first year at UK and 29 in his second. All nine of his Memphis clubs won 20-plus games, along with his last six teams at UMass.
In his final season at UMass, Calipari was named the 1996 Naismith National Coach of the Year and The Sporting News National Coach of the Year. He was also named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the third time in four years, as well as Basketball Times East Region Coach of the Year. During the Minutemen’s 35-2 season in 1995-96, UMass posted wins over Kentucky, Maryland, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Syracuse, Virginia Tech and Louisville. UMass ended the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation in the final regular season poll after being the top-ranked team for nine weeks earlier in the year. The Minutemen also won their first 26 games of the season, setting a school record for most consecutive wins. In addition to his national coach of the year honors in 1996, Calipari was a Naismith Coach of the Year finalist in 1994 and 1995. The 52-year-old lettered two years at North Carolina-Wilmington before transferring to Clarion State. He played point guard at Clarion during the 1981 and 1982 seasons, leading the team in assists and free-throw percentage. The Eagles were ranked in the Division II top 20 both years and participated in the 1981 NCAA Division II Tournament. Calipari and his wife, Ellen, have two daughters, Erin and Megan and a son, Bradley. Erin graduated from UMass and is now in graduate school at Wake Forest, while Megan is pursuing her undergraduate degree at UMass. Brad is a freshman at Lexington Christian Academy. ASSISTANT COACHES Antigua, Payne ORLANDO ANTIGUA
Pittsburgh, ’95
A
ntigua is in his third season as an assistant coach with the Wildcats after spending one season with John Calipari at Memphis. Known for his eye for talent on the recruiting trail, Antigua has helped UK pull in three straight top-ranked recruiting classes. In his initial season with the Wildcats, Antigua saw three of his recruits drafted in the first round of the 2010 NBA Draft. As a result, he was named one of Yahoo! Sports top-10 college basketball recruiters. When he joined the Memphis staff in 2008, the Tigers were the winningest program over a three-year span in NCAA Division I history, recording 104 victories from 2005-08. So what did Antigua do? He helped coach the Tigers to a 33-4 record and a spot in the 2009 NCAA Sweet 16. For the fourth straight season, the Tigers took the regular season and tournament titles, going undefeated in C-USA three of the four years. Prior to his brief stay in Memphis, Antigua worked at his alma mater, Pittsburgh. During his five years at Pitt, he helped lead the Panthers to an overall record of 132-40 (.767 winning percentage) and a Big East Conference mark of 55-27 (.670 winning percentage). Pittsburgh recorded five straight 20win campaigns and won 10 or more league games five consecutive years. Fluent in Spanish, Antigua and his wife, Dana, have two children; a son, Orlando Anthony, and a daughter, Olivia. K E N N Y PAY N E

ayne begins his second year with John Calipari and Kentucky men’s basketball as an assistant coach after spending six seasons as an assistant at Oregon. Payne’s work with forward Josh Harrellson last season was one of the biggest reasons behind Kentucky’s historic run. In addition to Harrellson’s conditioning program, Payne helped Harrellson develop an interior game that led to a significant increase in playing time. Harrellson’s transformation was widely regarded as one of the national stories of the 2011 NCAA tournament. Nationally recognized as one of the game’s top recruiters, Payne’s ability to recruit has continued to flourish at Kentucky. He played a key part in John Calipari’s 2011 recruiting class, the school’s third consecutive top-ranked class. All four of UK’s freshmen are ranked in the top 25 of most major recruiting services. A four-year letterwinner at Louisville from 1985-89, Payne joined the Cardinals from Northeast Jones High School in Laurel, Miss., where he was a PARADE All-American and the state’s player of the year. Payne helped lead Louisville to the 1986 NCAA national championship as a sophomore. As a senior, Payne averaged 14.5 points and 5.7 rebounds and was named second-team All-Metro Conference. By the end of his Louisville career, Payne registered 1,083 points and shot 40 percent from 3-point range. Payne earned a bachelor’s of science in sport administration from Louisville in 2003. He and his wife, Michelle, have two children, Alexis and Alexander. 20

obic is in his third season with the Kentucky basketball program but is a long-time associate of UK head coach John Calipari. Beginning with their first season together at UMass in 1988-89, where Robic was an assistant under Calipari, the two are entering their 15th season together. It seems as if the Calipari-Robic duo is a proven combination for thrilling basketball seasons. Similar to those magical years he assisted in at UMass in the 1990s, Robic helped lead Memphis to the program’s most storied era in school history in four seasons (2006-09) as well as helping return Kentucky back among the nation’s elite. Robic helped the Wildcats post a 35-3 mark in his inaugural season at Kentucky. The Cats made an appearance in the 2010 Elite Eight while claiming SEC regular-season and tournament championships along the way. He helped UK make history with five Wildcats drafted in the first round of the 2010 NBA Draft. In 2011, Kentucky returned to the Final Four for the first time since 1998. Four more players were taken in the 2011 NBA Draft under the watch of the Calipari-Robic combination. A graduate of North Hills High School in Pittsburgh, Robic attended Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where he earned his bachelor of arts in speech communication and physical education in 1986. Robic and his wife, Heidi, have three daughters, Hayley, Alli and Sophie.

WILDCAT PAGEANTRY The Traditions That Make Kentucky Basketball BLUE AND WHITE The University of Kentucky adopted blue and white as its official colors in 1892. UK students had first decided on blue and light yellow before the Kentucky-Centre football game Dec. 19, 1891. The yellow was soon dropped from the combination and replaced by white. The particular Kentucky shade of blue, close to royal blue, was determined without ceremony. After settling on the base colors, a student posed the logical question, “What color blue?” Letterman Richard Stoll looked down at his necktie and raised it to the air. The vote was unanimous.
by the Woods and Wetlands of Cadiz, Ky. His life expectancy is 15-25 years. UK DANCE TEAM The University of Kentucky Dance Team helps generate excitement and enthusiasm at Wildcat athletics events. Under the tutelage of Dawn Duncan Walters and assistant coach Andrea Masters, the 201011 dance team has 38 members, including Blue and White squads. The team won its first national championship at the 2005 national competition sponsored by the United Spirit Association. It backed that up with a second-place finish in 2006 and took home third at the 2007 championships. The 2010 squad placed fifth in the Pom Division at UDA 2010 Nationals.
WILDCATS NICKNAME The official nickname for the University of Kentucky’s athletics teams is “Wildcats.” The nickname became synonymous with UK shortly after a 6-2 football victory over Illinois on Oct. 9, 1909, on the road. Commandant Carbusier, then head of the military department at old State University (UK), told a group of students in a chapel service following the game that the Kentucky football team had “fought like wildcats.” Later the name Wildcats became more and more popular among UK followers as well as with members of the media. As a result, the nickname was adopted by the University.
FAN-tastic! The Kentucky cheerleaders, band and dance team combine to entertain the nation’s largest and most loyal fan base in college basketball. Sure, Ashley Judd, Tommy Lasorda, Muhammad Ali and Backstreet Boy Kevin Richardson steal the attention, but those Big Blue stars are just a few of the Cat fans in attendance at UK games. It’s each and every one of the many Kentucky fans who deserve the credit for helping the Wildcats lead the nation in attendance 22 times since Rupp Arena opened in 1976-77, including 14 of the last 15 years. And the tremendous fan base is not limited to just Lexington. Each year, Kentucky fans flock to Freedom Hall in Louisville, to fill the arena with more than 20,000 fans for an annual “home” game. The Southeastern Conference Tournament? Well, it might as well be called the Kentucky Invitational. March Madness? Nearly the same result. The nation’s largest media contingent follows the Cats from start to finish simply because of the fans’ incessant appetite for information on their Wildcats.
LIVE MASCOT In 2000, the University of Kentucky, in cooperation with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, adopted a 3-year-old male bobcat to serve as the Wildcats’ “official” mascot. The wildcat has a permanent residence on display at a game farm just west of the state capitol in Frankfort, Ky. UK Athletics sponsored a name-thewildcat Internet contest and the final three possibilities were Tucky, Blue and Champ, with Blue earning the final nod after nearly 50,000 votes were cast. Through the years, UK has had other official live mascots with colorful names. Records indicate that the first wild animal was given to the University in 1921. Named “Tom,” this live Kentucky wildcat died quickly in captivity and was replaced by “TNT.” Other live mascots followed, including “Whiskers,” “Hot Tamale” and “Colonel,” only to pass on due to old age or be turned loose in the mountains after they failed to thrive in captivity. The current cat was born in captivity and donated

All 22 sports use Nike shoes and equipment, and over the course of the contract, the Wildcats will 24

A few years later, he was joined by another Cat — walking on stilts — who made his appearance during UK’s twin tower era of Melvin Turpin and Sam Bowie. Today, both the Wildcat and his sidekick, Scratch, attend each football and basketball game, several academic functions, and generally serve as friendly ambassadors for the University.
CAWOOD’S COURT Prior to the UK-Louisville game on Dec. 29, 2001, the court at Rupp Arena was named “Cawood’s Court” in honor of Cawood Ledford, the beloved “Voice of the Wildcats” for 39 years (1953-92). Ledford passed away in September 2001 after a long battle with cancer. The ceremonies included the unveiling of a logo courtside, not far from where Ledford called the action. Also included in the ceremony were donations by two area businesses to the Cawood Ledford Scholarship Fund, established in 1992 to assist former student-athletes in obtaining their degrees.
SCRATCH Scratch joined the cheerleading squad in the mid ’90s in conjunction with the UK Kids’ Club, but today he has become almost as recognizable as the Wildcat. The lovable face of UK Athletics recently garnered national attention after being named to the 2003 Capital One Mascot All-America team, an honor he earned again in 2004. SENIOR DAY Senior Day at Kentucky has become one of the most celebrated ceremonies in college basketball. Honoring its senior class, UK’s event is one of the most elaborate and moving programs of its kind. The pregame ceremony begins with player introductions. Once they have all burst through banners bearing their likenesses, their families join them at center court. Then the state song, “My Old Kentucky Home,” is sung as the home crowd bids farewell.
THE WILDCAT The Wildcat mascot originated during the 1976-77 academic year at UK. Gary Tanner was the original
UK CHEERLEADERS Rooting on the Wildcats every game are the awardwinning UK Cheerleaders. Under the direction of adviser T. Lynn Williamson and coach Jomo Thompson, the UK Cheerleaders have become the model cheerleading squad in the nation. Since 1985, UK has earned the Universal Cheer Association national championship an impressive 18 times. The squad has been runner-up five times. UK PEP BAND With more than 100 members, the University of Kentucky pep band is one of the largest in the nation. Clad in its recognizable blue and white outfits, the pep band is directed by George Boulden. Performing at both home football and basketball games, the UK pep band has been named by Southern Living as one of the “top 10 bands in the South.”

dolph Rupp is synonymous with winning. As coach of Kentucky, he was a pioneer in the Wildcats’ fast-break offense while becoming the winningest coach the game had ever seen. The site that now serves as a tribute to his outstanding coaching accomplishments — Rupp Arena — has become one of the most recognizable gymnasiums in the world while serving as home to college basketball’s most storied program. Now in its 35th season as the Kentucky Wildcats’ home court, the facility has seen UK win better than 85 percent of its home games since it was opened in 1976. In recent years, renovations were completed on Rupp Arena — including the lower arena seats being changed to blue from their previous rainbow colors. In addition, new end-zone seating moved the student section closer to the floor in an intimidating, standingroom only arrangement. While the endowment seats along courtside continue to entice fans to financially support their Wildcats, a large portion of the media have been moved to a “press box” location between the lower and upper seating areas. And finally, nearly 40 seats were added to each corner, the first additions in seating in nearly two decades.
The improvements followed changes that included four new video boards, a new playing floor with a striking new design and enhancements to the concourses as well. It was all part of a $15 million upgrade to what many consider the mecca of college basketball. Since the fall of 1976, the arena in downtown Lexington has served as home to three national championship teams at Kentucky. Four others have advanced to the Final Four. Eight seasons have witnessed the Cats go unbeaten at home. It has played host to nearly 520 UK games, countless KHSAA Sweet 16s, a number of NBA exhibitions, 11 NCAA tournaments, three SEC tournaments and two Ohio Valley Conference Tournaments. With so many unforgettable moments, the old floor still maintained a value to hoop fans across the Bluegrass and beyond. Therefore, officials made pieces of the relic available for public sale, with proceeds going to the UK Basketball Museum, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association and to help offset the cost of the new playing floor. Thanks to an auction of additional sections, like coaching boxes and lettered end zones, the old floor generated more than $250,000. 28

RUPP ARENA Home of the Wildcats The new portable basketball court, adorned with the official interlocking UK logo at midcourt, was designed by both UK officials and the Lexington Center Corporation. Robbins Inc., in Cincinnati constructed it in 2001 at a cost of $125,000. When assembled, it lies 118 feet below the ceiling and is made of a high-grade northern maple. The floor can be removed and an ice rink can be constructed for ice shows or hockey games thanks to a $2.5 million renovation during the summer of ’96. But the playing surface is just one aspect of the impressive home of the Cats. Situated in downtown Lexington, Rupp Arena has played host to several premier basketball events. In March 1985, all roads led to Lexington for the NCAA Final Four as Villanova shocked Georgetown in a memorable finale. In 1986, Rupp played host to both the Southeastern Conference Tournament and the NCAA Women’s Final Four. On numerous other occasions, the arena has served as one stop en route to the NCAA title game. An awesome structure in sight and scope, the arena is divided into two seating areas. The lower level features 10,000 cushioned theater seats. The upper level has 13,000 seats on epoxy-coated metal bleachers. The latter can be visually isolated to provide more natural setting for small shows. Built by the city of Lexington, the arena is the major portion of the $53 million Lexington Center complex, which includes an expanded convention-
exhibition hall, a 50-store tri-level enclosed shopping mall and a Hyatt Regency Hotel. The Wildcats command an exclusive locker room 365 days a year, while other amenities include six team-size dressing rooms and eight smaller units. In January 2001, the arena unveiled four new video boards, each 12’6” by 20’ in size and mounted in each corner. It allowed the Wildcats to utilize a new “lights out” introduction, featuring a video presentation and indoor fireworks.

UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY Serving the Commonwealth
T
he innovation, creativity, quality teaching and service underway at the University of Kentucky touch the lives of people throughout the state, the nation and the world. UK accomplishes this achievement through ground-breaking research, community outreach and technological advances that contribute to the betterment of the Commonwealth while also fostering a cultural quality of life through our museums, libraries and special events. Founded in 1865 as a land-grant institution adjacent to downtown Lexington, UK is nestled in the scenic heart of the beautiful Bluegrass Region of Kentucky. From its early beginnings, with only 190 students and 10 professors, UK’s campus now covers more than 716 acres and is home to 28,000 students and 13,500 employees.
THE UN IVERSITY OF KEN TUCKY public universities in the country.
UK is one of only seven universities in the U.S. that has programs in agriculture, engineering, medicine and pharmacy on a single campus, leading to groundbreaking discoveries and unique interdisciplinary collaboration. The state’s flagship university consists of 16 academic and professional colleges where students can choose from some 200 majors and degree programs. The colleges are Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics, Communications and Information Studies, Dentistry, Design, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Health Sciences, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and Social Work. “The University of Kentucky has a diverse set of campus resources centered in Lexington,” President Eli Capilouto said. “Our wide array of programs allows us to excel in interdisciplinary studies and fosters an environment of cooperative engagement across all colleges, programs and research endeavors. We need to leverage our resource base to move Kentucky forward into a knowledge-based economy. The University of Kentucky, as the Commonwealth’s flagship institution, is called to improve the general welfare of our citizenry, and we are uniquely positioned to make that future a reality for the people of Kentucky.” The UK Chandler Medical Center was established in 1957 and is one of the nation’s top academic medical centers. The faculty, students and staff of our dynamic medical center take pride in achieving excellence in education, patient care, research and community service. The 791-bed UK Chandler Hospital and Kentucky Children’s Hospital are supported by a growing faculty and staff. The university recently completed construction of a new $536 million patient care pavilion at UK Chandler Hospital, which serves as a cornerstone for the Commonwealth’s Medical Campus of the Future. UK HealthCare serves a unique role in the Commonwealth, as the only Level 1 Trauma Center in Central and Eastern Kentucky. UK’s agenda is to accelerate the university’s movement toward academic excellence in all areas and gain worldwide recognition for its outstanding academic programs, its commitment to undergraduates, its success in building a diverse community and its engagement with the larger society. It’s all part of the university’s strategy to help position UK as the state’s indispensable institution.

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR MITCH BARNHART In His 10th Year Guiding UK Athletics
M
itch Barnhart is in his 10th year at the University of Kentucky, with unparalleled accomplishments in his past and unprecedented goals for
the future. In the last year alone, UK Athletics’ success featured the school’s first national championship in rifle; the men’s basketball team returned to the Final Four for the first time since 1998; softball advanced to the super regional for the first time; and the football team continued its school-record five-year bowl streak. Combined with other achievements, these feats are fulfilling Barnhart’s ambitious course for the future, which was revealed in November 2008 with the 15 x 15 x 15 Plan. The goals are to win at least 15 conference or national championships and rank among the NCAA’s top 15 athletics programs by 2015 — all of which would be unprecedented achievements for UK Athletics — while continuing to expand the department’s service to the commonwealth of Kentucky. Another goal is a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average for UK’s 500-plus studentathletes on an annual basis. Barnhart’s commitment to the 15 x 15 x 15 Plan, and beyond, was reinforced this year when he signed a contract extension that reaches 2019. UK’s steady improvement in the Directors’ Cup standings under Barnhart was highlighted with a 29th-place finish in 2009-10. It was the school’s best showing since Barnhart’s arrival, its top finish since 1997-98 and only three slots away from the best mark in school history. The primary academic target was met during the 2010 spring semester as UK’s student-athletes notched a composite 3.04 GPA. but Barnhart wants to continue to see academic success and improvement in the future. In addition, UK has consistently posted strong numbers in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate as every one of UK’s 22 varsity sports have avoided penalties in the APR’s seven-year existence. Graduation rates, which date back to classes that entered six years ago, are beginning to show the improvement Barnhart emphasized upon his arrival in 2002. Additional initiatives begun under Barnhart’s leadership include fully funding all 22 varsity sports with maximum number of scholarships and coaches; creating the UK Athletics Hall of Fame; initiating the CATSPYs, an awards program that honors

the best of UK Athletics; the construction of the Joe Craft Center, a $30 million facility that includes practice and administrative space for a variety of sports; more than $14 million of football facility improvements; and the construction of a new $12 million track stadium. Barnhart’s influence reaches far beyond the fields of competition. Despite athletics’ urgent financial needs, Barnhart directs a $1.7-million annual contribution to UK’s scholarship program. Barnhart arrived at UK from Oregon State, where he served four successful years (1998-2002) as athletics director. Before OSU, he worked in athletics administration posts at Tennessee (1986-98), Southern Methodist University (1983-86), Oregon (1983) and San Diego State (1982-83). Barnhart is a native of Kansas City, Kan. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Ottawa University (Kansas) in 1981 and a master’s in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982. His family includes his wife, Connie, three children, Blaire, Scott, Kirby Willoughby and her husband, McKenzie. 52

WILDCAT INSIDER with Sophomore Doron Lamb Q: What NBA player do you model your game after? A: Penny Hardaway Q: What’s getting the most play on your mp3 player? A: Drake Q: What is a movie you love, but wouldn’t tell your teammates about? A: Titantic Q: When were you most nervous last season and how did you get over it? A: My first game. I hit my first shot. It was all downhill from there. Q: Did you feel the need to work even harder during the offseason after the success you had last year? A: Yeah, definitely. I wanted to just work hard and get better than I was last year. Q: How do you think teams will adjust to your game this year? A: I think teams will try to crowd me a little bit more and make me put the ball on the floor and create for my teammates.
DORON LAMB
Q: How has Coach Cal challenged you to work on your game going into this season? A: He’s challenged me to work hard and be a leader, to pick up the freshmen when they’re down.
Q: How did last year’s long postseason run have an effect on you, physically? A: My body was crazy after the UConn game, but I got a lot of treatment after and I took three or four days off.
Q: Why did you decide to stay at UK after having a chance to leave early for the NBA? A: Just to try to win a national championship, to be a first-round pick in the NBA Draft.
Q: Was it worth it? A: It was worth it. I had a great time at the Final Four. It was exciting to be there.

UK SPORTS UPDATE Men’s Soccer By Brent Ingram UK Media Relations
The Wildcats continued its road swing, traveling to the opposite coast from its California venture, competing in the 2011 Gamecock Classic, hosted by eventual C-USA regular-season champion South Carolina. UK had its best weekend of the year, posting a 2-1 comeback overtime win over High Point in the opener, before putting together a 5-1 shellacking of No. 15 Brown to claim the Gamecock Classic Championship. UK then made a day trip to Omaha, Neb., to face off with No. 3 Creighton, with the Jays owning the NCAA’s top defensive unit. The Wildcats fell behind in front of 2,557 fans and couldn’t get any of its efforts into the net, with Creighton posting a 2-0 win. After a 3-2 win over Evansville in overtime at the UK Soccer Complex, UK again hit the road, suffering a pair of overtime losses at No. 10 UCF and at FIU as part of its two-game, six-day trip to Florida. Kentucky then fell in four consecutive games, including conference home matches against Marshall and UAB. With its back against the wall, UK responded with a 3-1 smashing of rival Tulsa to remain in the hunt for the C-USA tournament. With injuries besetting the club, UK traveled to No. 10 Indiana without its three top scoring threats and fell 2-0. UK then traveled to Memphis in a mustwin situation, but fell 2-0 to drop out of contention for the league tournament. UK’s streak of seven consecutive C-USA tournaments was snapped. Kentucky had made the conference tournament in each year as a member of the league. Throughout the year, UK was led offensively by its duo of forwards Tyler Riggs and Matt Lodge. Riggs led UK with 11 goals and five assists, with Lodge netting seven goals and 10 assists, including a hat trick in a win over IPFW. Charles Pettys led UK in the midfield with three goals and seven assists, while senior Josh Mulvany — who had to sit out the first 22 games of his UK career while attaining NCAA eligibility — netted four goals with four assists in 15 games. UK sophomore defender Dylan Asher earned second-team All-Conference USA accolades, with Riggs and Lodge earning third-team honors and defender Marco Bordon tabbed to the C-USA All-Freshman team.
The Kentucky men’s soccer team completed its 2011 season in early November, with a 9-9-2 record and a 2-5-1 slate in Conference USA. The Wildcats were led throughout the season by a prolific offensive attack, as UK netted a staggering 35 goals in 20 games, a startling figure after recording only 18 goals in 20 games a year ago. UK’s offensive dominance was a change from the stingy defensive units Kentucky has boasted over the course of its more than 20-year history. Kentucky opened its season in impressive fashion, posting wins over Dayton and a thrilling 2-1 comeback win over No. 9 Michigan on opening weekend. After a win over IPFW and a rain-halted draw with IUPUI, the Wildcats kicked off what would be a brutal travel stretch. UK traveled to San Francisco for a two-game swing, facing Stanford and No. 13 Cal. UK’s offense netted three goals in the two games, but suffered a pair of losses to the high-octane Pac-12 clubs.
The UK men’s soccer team was led by a prolific offensive attack in 2011, netting 35 goals in 20 games, just a year removed from scoring 18 goals in 20 games. Sophomore forward T Y L E R R I G G S led UK with 11 goals. 68
