PRESIDENT’S REPORT
I
t has been an interesting summer with a few hot days intermingled with many cool and wet days. From a fire perspective, it has meant that Yarck has been closed on very few days this summer. However, with another month of our official summer, it is still important that we are vigilant when heading out on the tracks or to Yarck over a weekend or mid-week. Hopefully the damaged water tank will be prepared soon. The Yarck Management team are currently organizing for a replacement tank, so it is still important that water is used sparingly at Yarck. As previously advised, the committee has reviewed the club’s By-Laws. The new ByLaws have been loaded onto the club website at: http://www.tlccv.com.au/TLCCVMembers/TLCCV-Documents/TLCCV-ByLaws-2016-01.pdf and will be tabled at our February meeting. In January, it was great to see our DA team testing out the 3 new Toyota vehicles at Yarck. The new 200 Series, Fortuner & Hilux were put through their paces and most members who attended the week-

end, enjoyed being chauffeured around some of the Yarck 4WD tracks. Heidi spent some time filming the vehicles using her quadcopter. For those of you that attended the January meeting will have enjoyed seeing some footage from the weekend. For those Facebook club members who did not attend our January meeting, you will no doubt have watched these clips on Facebook. A big thank you to Brian & Sandra Tanner for arranging the use of the three vehicles from Toyota Motor Corporation, to Garry Cooper and Ann for organizing lunch for the Toyota employees who attended and Greg & Carol Edmunds for organizing the sausage sizzle. I also enjoyed preparing 4 large bowls of salad which gave the members a great sit down meal. Membership renewals are being sent out this month. You will also find a renewal form in this magazine. The committee discussed membership fees last week, and agreed to keep fees the same. The committee is aware that some savings have been made with the printing costs of the club magazine. These savings will assist

Car Mechanics – Basic Servicing a 4WD held at Yarck on Saturday 9th January 2016 Course presenter – Simon Mustey Attendees: Ian Mak, Steve de Mamiel, Luke Mak and Alan McMeekin he course was originally scheduled for 19th December, but was postponed because of the total fire ban decreed for the north central area of Victoria. The 9th January was a perfect day at Yarck, temperature in the mid 20’s, fine and clear, with visits by a local koala and birdlife. We occupied the concreted, covered area at the back of the Hilton. The day’s activities got under way at 8.00am, using Ian Mak’s Prado 90 Series as the patient which would undergo a series of standard service procedures during the day. Ian did most of the handson work under Simon’s guidance with the
T
occasional (and sometimes useful) assistance provided by the other participants. Jacking the car up and ensuring safety by placing stands underneath proved to be more time- consuming than expected. It showed the limitations of the standard Toyota jack, the relative usefulness of a bottle jack and the benefits of using a good
quality hi-lift jack and “a lift mate” (which hooks onto the wheel rims) to lift the car easily to the required height. Cracking the wheel nuts required extra leverage, in spite of assurances given to Ian by the car mechanic that the wheels had been torques to specs. A length of pipe is handy to have on board, or the handle of the hi-lift can be used too.

Service procedures undertaken were: Oil and filter change, rear diff oil change, auto transmission oil change, air filter change, change front fan/alternator, water pump belts, and diesel fuel filter. Oil changes for the front diff and transfer case were deferred to another day, due to a broken oil transfer pump. A pre-trip inspection of a number of items was undertaken, including, brake pads, brake discs, brake hoses, shock absorbers, looking for leaks (tell-tale clean areas underneath) and all

suspension rubbers looking for cracking and signs of wear. The patient was found to be in pretty good condition, with only a couple of rubbers showing signs of cracking and front disk pads requiring attention. Seeing Simon’s set of tools was helpful… learning about the benefits of 6 sided sockets (as opposed to 12 sided ones) when applying high torque on hard to budge bolts. There was some useful discussion about
the relative merits of using genuine Toyota parts compared with other suppliers and the benefits of staying with suppliers of parts with proven reputations. It was a very informative and useful day. There are always things to learn from people in the Club such as Simon who are experts in these areas and are willing to spend their time helping others. Thanks Simon. Alan McMeekin (2519)
MANAGEMENT REPORT
hese past two months have certainly seen extreme weather conditions from hot and dry with a number of total fire ban days to very cool and plenty of rain. It has been noted that some members have left the property on days of total fire ban; this may be inconvenient, but much safer. We are in the process of replacing one of our 22,500 litre water tanks as the metal header tank has rusted through the base.
The water situation is not critical, but I ask that care be taken to not waste it. As we approach our first Maintenance & Construction weekend for the year on 20th & 21st February, there will be need for many helping hands. Weather permitting, the concreting of the track near the toilet block will be completed, so be part of this fun day. See Greg West if you can. Preparations for the CruiserKhana need to get under way as there are events that require maintenance. More assistance is needed so see Neil Chambers. Construction of the Bush Hut is continuing with placing of the verandah posts and roof; most of the materials are on site. The windows are not far away either. Peter Burchall is the guy to see for this. There are repairs required on the fence bordering the Terip Terip Road as a number of trees have come down. The Presidents Board has been updated, thanks to Garry Cooper for chasing that up. The regular team are looking forward to a good turnout to get the year rolling, so come along and get to know how it “just all happens.” Upcoming events include a Mediterranean Night on the 5th March. A Pre Easter Family Get-Together combined with the March Maintenance & Construction weekend on the 19th & 20th March. The CruiserKhana setup and Maintenance & Construction weekend is the 9th & 10th April.
Maintenance & Construction meeting nights are now held on the 2nd MONDAY of the month at 7:30pm in the Heritage Room at the Mulgrave Country Club. Brian Stewart (340) YARCK MANAGEMENT COORDINATOR

Rawson Caravan Park was the perfect launching place, being close to the tracks we were to drive over the weekend. The caravan park has about 12 sites each with its own en suite in a lovely treed area of the park. A few elected to have a hearty meal at the park’s Stockyard Bistro with a quenching ale whilst admiring the collection of cut throat razors, which
4 Overland Cruisering
adorned the roof area above the bar. On Saturday morning, our remaining vehicles arrived so we set off heading south along Tyres Walhalla Road before turning down Coopers Creek Rd to the historic town of Coopers Creek. The only building standing and in a reasonable state was the Coopers Mine Hotel. As I understand, it has been closed for about 10 years however it is rumored that it will reopen soon. After airing down, we started our 4WDing for the weekend by driving across the fast
flowing Thomson River. After successfully crossing, we stopped on the other side for a walk to the Walhalla Copper Mining Co. (1874) Mine. Although the walk to the mine site was only a few hundred meters, it required care as we needed to step around many large bog holes and traverse a tramway bridge, which had very few sleepers still in position. Having negotiated the dilapidated bridge, we arrived at the mine site with loading hoppers and mine entrance. It was certainly worth a good look in a great historic area.

Returning to the vehicles and after morning tea we hit Coopers Creek Rd toward Walhalla turning right towards Walhalla. Just after crossing the bridge over the scenic Thomson River and restored Thomson River railway station, we took a sharp left hand turn onto Mormon Town Track. With 4WD engaged, the track rises steadily some 400 meters with a steady incline weaving in behind the township of Walhalla continuing on past Mormon Town to the Walhalla Rd. Mormon Town Track was a great introduction to the tracks to be covered for the weekend allowing the three newbies to gain confidence for what was to come. We arrived at the Aberfeldy River camping area for lunch where Heidi decided it was a great location to fly her quadcopter, filming the lovely location from the air. We continued travelling north, turning down a very steep descent onto Fulton’s Creek Track before crossing the Aberfeldy River. Another sharp left turn took us onto One Spec track. We were soon descending to Fultons Creek, where we drove down the middle of the creek for about 50 meters. (Gerry Gee certainly enjoyed making waves through the creek.) Both Fultons Creek Track and One Spec Track were nice interesting tracks with some great climbs. From One Spec Track we turned left onto Williamson Spur Track which followed the ridge line before turning right onto ‘S’ Track (i.e. Steep Track) down to Donnelly Creek Road. As the name implies, ‘S’ Track dropped off in a very steep decline of over 400 meters over 2kms. Again a very nice interesting track. Turning right at Donnelly Creek Road we followed the Donnelly Creek turning left onto Morning Star Track. This was easy but gave us some great scenery. Having reached Morning Star Track, we were pre-
18 Overland Cruisering
sented with some more steep climbs, traversing the ridge passing the Morning Star Mine. At the end of Morning Star Track we turned left onto Black Range Road. From there it was a short trip to our intended campsite for the evening. After a quick investigation, our intended campsite was found to be overgrown and unsuitable, so some quick re-planning was required. Our Trip Leaders decided to move onto Mount Useful lookout where we had a quick break to admire the views and afternoon tea. Leaving the scenic Mount Useful Lookout view behind, we retraced our route back along Black Range Road reaching White Star Track which wound around the mountain keeping fairly level. A nice little track but the turn to get onto the track was very sharp. The last section of White Star Track
just before our intended camp for the evening of Little O’ Tooles camping area was quite steep and a very challenging descent - quite an interesting track to keep one’s interest as the track drops some 500 meters or so. Little O’ Tooles campsite was quite peaceful and completely adequate for our needs with drop toilets. There were a couple of other campers there and a peaceful night was had by all. Comments: From a new 4x4 driver’s perspective, the tracks covered were carefully selected to increase in technical difficulty as the weekend progressed allowing our new drivers to consolidate the DA awareness learnings and gave drivers experience and confidence. It certainly gave more confidence as we learnt new skills and learned the capabilities of our vehicles. For newbies, the learnings and the fellowship was most enjoyable with a great bunch of people. Heading for the switchbacks on Trig Track: We woke to a bright, clear day for more driving adventures. Our first adventure was to cross Donnelly Creek again, and make our way back up White Star Track towards Mt Useful. There was great 4WDing with plenty of rocky up and down hills to contend with, as well as a splendid amount of lush regrowth to marvel at in the area previously scorched by bushfires. We were going for a second climb of Mt Useful in the expectation that the view would be better than the day before, given the clearer skies. Navigating interesting ups and downs on the Toomstar and McGuire Tracks and passing masses of superb tree ferns, we reached the top of Mt Useful for an early tea break. The views however were restricted by a bright carpet of clouds which had settled over the surrounding lower altitudes. We descended Mt Useful via McGuires Track and Tomboon Track with lots of fallen trees and logs to contend with - some overhead and many sticking out onto the track. Heidi did us all a favor by getting some chainsaw practice under her belt on one enormous log sticking out way too far for comfort. Great job, Heidi! This interlude was also a welcome break and photo opportunity as it was one of the many scenic spots on the track. After descending the very steep track, we crossed the McGuire Creek. The hardest section of our trip now lay in front of us. This was a 700 metre rocky, rutted climb . It was pleasing to note that we all managed the very steep rock climb before hitting the Toombon Track. However more rocky descents followed, and this time included some big muddy potholes and long ruts. We descended Jorgenson’s Track which brought us back to the Donnelly Creek Road. We rolled into the Jorgenson’s historic site for lunch beside the newly finished Jorgenson’s hut (the dedication plaque indicated the official opening had been in May 2015). From here, we backtracked towards O’Tooles, this time climbing up Flats Track, which is anything but flat. This was a 450 metre rocky climb over 1.8 kms with some tight switchbacks. But the most dramatic part of the day still lay ahead. After another half hour driving up and down along Williamson’s Spur Track and One Spec Track and passing Pheasant Track and North-East Track (just love all these interesting track names!), we reached Trig East Track that is only open summer to autumn. With anticipation and some trepidation, we all waited at the top while Heidi and Laurie drove all the way to the bottom so Heidi could position her quadcopter to capture the members’ descent on sky-cam. This impressive descent comprised twelve very tight switchbacks, with each hairpin bend so tight you had no choice but to do an equally tight 3-point turn or even 5point turn on each one. We needed all our precision and were grateful that the track had been recently graded with some rocky 4 Overland Cruisering
material built up on the outer edges, giving a better sense of security. Still, it was slow going, with each vehicle requiring between 15 and 25 minutes to do the 200 metre descent over 450 metres. That’s an average speed of around 1km/h. Reaching the bottom, there was a final footbath for the cars, crossing the Aberfeldy River for the last time, and with plenty of malevolent rocks to negotiate around. After negotiating the rocky crossing of the Aberfeldy, the only way forward was up the other side - the long, steep, western continuation of Trig Track that took us up to the Thomson Dam Access Road. From there it was just a short drive across the Thomson dam wall to the Silvertop Picnic Area. Apart from Moshe, who decided to change a tyre that had been partly ripped by a badly installed mud-guard bolt, for the rest of us it was just a matter of airing our tyres up and a bit of a yarn before saying our farewells and heading back home. Our thanks to Laurie and Heidi for a very enjoyable and successful club trip and also Gerry and Darren, the tail end Charlie team. Margaret Korn (2277)

Friday 2nd October 2015: The choice was a tough one. The Grand Final parade, or a day 4WDing with Simon and the crew in the Cobaw State Forest near Lancefield, North West of Melbourne? The weather was perfect, low to mid 20’s, sunny and only a light breeze. Everyone must have been keen for a day in the forest as most had arrived well before the meeting time of 9:00am in Lancefield. While some were finishing off their egg and bacon rolls and coffee, Simon briefed us on what he had planned for the day. We were
given our convoy order then lined up just out of town to get underway. After travelling along Burke and Wills Track and Ashworth Road we stopped to air down just after entering the forest. The first interesting bit for the day involved a deeply rutted climb with a sharp right hand turn at the bottom along Greenways
Track, which, for the lower hung vehicles, required some precise wheel placement to stay out of the ruts. For the vehicles with a bit more ground clearance the climb could be driven in the ruts. It would have been a totally different story in the wet and may have required some winching. After meandering along Greenways Track, we turned onto Reilly Road where we stopped for morning tea in a large clearing. We were approached by some Parks Victoria people who were in the process of starting a controlled burn. Unfortunately a large chunk of the State Forest was closed in order to carry out the burn so out came the maps, and after some consultation with the Parks people, Simon revised his plans for the rest of the day’s drive. Next we headed off north along Reilly’s Road, turned onto Ridge Road then Boyles Road, which ended in a dead end, so after some backtracking we continued along Ridge Road and turned down Natives Track. Many of the tracks we traversed today were very slow going due to the amount of downed timber, forcing us to follow minor tracks around the obstacles. It was an excellent exercise in wheel placement and vehicle positioning to negotiate the tight twisty tracks through the trees and in some places over the boulders.

After Natives Track we found our way onto Googies Fireline and proceeded to wind our way up and down until we came to a rather sharp drop off that required some road building to fill a large hole. Simon successfully negotiated the drop off with a little guidance from Rob. After all that physical work by some of the crew, it was time for a break and lunch was taken along the track. After lunch everyone was safely guided down the drop off by Simon and we continued along Googies Fireline. We turned onto Christies Track and with some careful wheel placement negotiated some large rocks at the bottom of the climb to Link Track. After retracing our steps along Natives Track we continued along Ridge Track and took an unnamed track back down to Link Track. We followed Link Track until we came to an interesting looking climb. To the left was fairly rocky and rutted and to the right an easier way to the top. Everyone must have been feeling a bit adventurous as we all took the left track with varying degrees of success. Dave in the Prado got a bit crossed up at the bottom and took a couple of goes to get through the tricky, rocky section without leaving any bits of metal on the track. The most spectacular drive was by John C. in his well set up 79 series. The rear leaf springs got hung up on one of the rocks and stopped his forward progress. After some direction from Simon trying to get off and around the rock, John
24 Overland Cruisering
reversed a little too far. The passenger side rear wheel dropped into a large hole resulting in the front driver side wheel lifting high into the air. After John’s heart stopped racing, out came the winch. John was successfully winched through the worst of the bottom section of the track, and then he drove the rest of the climb. But by far, the drive of the day was Darren’s wife, Rachel, in the mighty black Prado. With dust flying and rocks spitting she drove all the way to the top with only a little direction from Darren on the hand held radio.
Following the excitement of the last track and as the time was getting on, Simon made the wise decision not to attempt a 4 o’clock track. We left the forest, via Croziers Rd, with the hope of returning to give Alcorns Track a go next time. Thanks, Simon for a very enjoyable day. Hopefully the Grand Final parade becomes a regular on the 4WD calendar. Brad Riddington (2694)

Our day started early and a bit cooler for this time of year. At the meeting point there was some catching up done with other members not seen for a while and introductions all round. A quick debrief, instructions and air down we set off for the day. “Tracks” stated that since the recce they had done only a couple of weeks prior, there had been many changes to the tracks. They had all been graded and were very wide. No pin stripping this weekend. Phew, saves the buffing for another day. The views along the tracks were spectacular, but still reminders from the tragic bushfire back in 2009 ever so present. We stopped at a wayside point for morning tea and all chattered about our vehicles. Comment: ‘not one lifted their bonnet’, “Tracks” was impressed. After about 15 minutes we headed off past “Eagle Glen” and up towards Mt Robertson for lunch. The views are spectacular. Some tracks challenging. During our lunch break there was some practicing of winching techniques and a short stroll to look at the ruins. After lunch we headed off down the tracks towards the falls. “Tracks” told us about the bog holes to come on Eagle Glen Track but they were gone. All graded and loads of clay. Not very wet but quite slippery, slowly does it. Candlebark Track was great. We all enjoyed the diversity of the
16 Overland Cruisering
tracks and there were some very challenging spots, from rocks to clay and even some dust. We stopped for afternoon tea and some of us did the 1.5km return walk down to Wombelano Falls. Not much water flowing though. The day ended at the old Primary School site, which was destroyed in the bushfires of 2009 and now the new site of the Kinglake Tennis Club. After airing up,
we all got together for goodbyes and thankyous for a great day. Some of us discovered our next shared trip together, coming up soon. Thankyou Paul for the trip and thankyou to everyone in the convoy for making it such a great day. Till we meet again on the tracks, “Stay Safe.” Chris Burr (2738)

fter the Otway fires the Geelong Branch contacted several local wildlife shelters to offer our help with food and water drops to the more remote areas of the Otways. Unfortunately, the fire areas in the Otways are still closed, so we looked for other ways to help. On Sunday 7th February, the Bellbrae Shelter contacted us and asked if we could help the Kilmore Shelter, as they have 68 kanagrros under care after the recent Kyneton fires. We managed to fill a trailer with donated grass hay and lucerne for the animals. we had a wonderful day cuddling joeys and wombats at Wild about Wildlife in Kilmore. We also worked with Jirrahlinga and West Coast Wildlife who donated some of their excess joey pouches, bunny rugs, masses of new bandages and wound care items. The Kilmore shelter is an amazing family operation that receives no government assistance. We would welcome any donations from our members to help care for these animals. We need crepe bandages, bunny rugs, or even a few dollars. Alison Williams

BUSHFIRE PLAN
The Toyota Land Cruiser Club does not recommend a “Stay and Defend” plan. Infrastructure on the property can be replaced. FIRE DANGER PERIOD [November – May] It is members’ responsibility to listen to radio news reports each evening during the Fire Danger Period for advice on the possibility of fires. Also be up to date with any declaration of Total Fire Ban Days. Yarck is in the NORTH CENTRAL FIRE BAN DISTRICT-149 Rennies Lane, GOBUR It is recommended that members leave the property the day before a declared Total Fire Ban day or very early in the morning of a Total Fire Ban day Members should not go to the property during any Total Fire Ban day. EVACUATION Those present will select one person from their number to take charge, The issue of evacuation during an emergency must be addressed early in the planning. Evacuation can be extremely dangerous unless it takes place well in advance of the fire hazard entering the general area of the camp. Roads may be blocked with fallen timber and visibility reduced by thick smoke. Increased pressures on emergency services may make it difficult for them to render assistance.
Evacuation should only be done via the main access track to Rennies Lane and the Gobur –Yarck Road. REFUGE There are NO bushfire proof shelters on the property. If a fire incident occurs and members cannot leave the property, then the Hut could possibly be used as a “safer place” to provide protection from radiant heat. It should be made as fire safe as is practical. Wet towels to be placed under doors to prevent embers entering. There is running water inside; there are knapsacks and fire extinguishers. Other equipment to have on hand should include. A battery operated am/fm radio and P2 filter masks. UHF radios left on – mobile phones – torches – first aid kits – drinking fluids. Clothing - it is advisable to have long trousers, long sleeved shirt and sturdy footwear. Gloves and hat are also useful. The wearing of shorts, dresses, thongs or any synthetic fabrics is totally unsuitable. Be prepared for smoke and embers that may enter the building. After the fire front has passed check outside and extinguish any burning embers or fires around the hut. All vehicles should be parked on bare ground, facing towards the exit with all doors and windows closed and keys in
the ignition. DO NOT BLOCK OFF ANY ACCESS TRACKS. Alarm, A distinctive alarm signal should be used, a simple manual device such as the triangle hanging in the tree outside the hut or the electronic device near the radios in the hut. Panic. This is something that can well be done without. Anyone showing signs of panic should be kept under some form of supervision, and provided with reassurance and prevented from doing anything rash.
