VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT
utumn is always a busy time of the 4WD calendar as many trips are being run and of course CruiserKhana 2015 has just been run. With the Challenge rights for the Team award being taken away from the TLCCV last year, TLCCV Team Ninja put up a sterling effort but were just pipped at the post in 2nd place by the Pajero2 team. Well done guys – perhaps next year we will wrestle the cup back – thanks to Gunter Scheffel, Rob Karkut and Wayne Jinks for heading up Team Ninja. Of course we must not forget the hard working CruiserKhana committee who put in hours of hard work to make sure CruiserKhana 2015 was a big success. Behind the scenes, a big thank you also goes out to the ladies in the kitchen who successfully served up meals to over 200 people. Another big thanks to those members who acted as CruiserKhana marshals. It has been a busy time for me as well, with running some club trips, and having just returned from a fantastic Vic/SA Border Track trip with 6 other vehicles. In addition to this, I am always busy writing fortnightly editions of Weekend Wrap, and this month (before the April meeting) I will be running a GPS training course.

Ian Ross is recuperating well after his recent surgery. He was progressing well when he managed to slip and fracture his ankle. Hopefully he gets plenty of rest and recovers soon. With Ian recovering, it means I have been asked to step up from my recent appointment as Vice President and chair a few club meetings - in all, a good learning curve for me. Tony Middleditch has been very busy checking out 4WD tracks near Mansfield and the High Country. Tony is organizing many trips for the FWDV 40th Anniversary weekend over the Queen’s Birthday weekend in June. With a lot of input from Brian & Sandra Tanner, this big anniversary event is starting to take shape. So it looks like this will be a great event and one not to be missed. If you haven’t sent in your registration form yet, then hunt it down in the club magazine (closing date 22nd May). With our club slowly moving into the electronic age, it is good to see so many members responding to the club survey earlier this year and more recently, the voting for future reading of our club magazine. Sometimes, it is hard to change the way we do things. Electronic communications are making our ability to get information to you much quicker and easier. Some of us are a
little reluctant to let go of the past. Hopefully with training and education we can assist each other to move forward in our changing world. So make sure you get your vote in. Brian Stewart has asked if he could place a vintage Massey Harris Combine Harvester (in his collection) as part of the landscaping for the new bush hut. Your committee has agreed to this, and hope that many members will gain benefit from viewing the harvester whenever they visit the bush hut. April means it’s time to start thinking about our committee for 2015/2016. You will see in this magazine, along with nomination forms plus proxy votes for those who will be away.

MEET THE LOCALS. THIS IS LANDCRUISER COUNTRY.
Long days. Harsh environments. Extreme weather. You could say it’s pretty tough out here, but the locals wouldn’t have it any other way. In the face of extreme adversity the LandCruiser 200, LandCruiser 70 Double Cab, FJ Cruiser and Prado are built to thrive. Whatever the outback throws at them, it’s just another day in paradise. This is LandCruiser Country.

Cruiserkhana 2015 – 20th – 22nd March, 2015
A
lot of the Club volunteers arrived on Thursday 19th March for our annual competitive event – Cruiserkhana! There were a few prayers said and hearts in mouths when the weather turned really bad on Thursday night with a huge torrential downpour. The only positive thoughts muttered were that it would settle the dust. Friday preparations went full steam ahead with multitudes of signs being erected, 200 show bags taken to the gate for distribution, the kiosk being set up (a massive task) and prep being commenced for the Saturday night dinner for over 200 people. It really was a hive of activity with everyone lending a hand. The front gate was opened at 12 noon Friday with Russell & Lesley Edwards and Tony & Barb Bryant putting in a sterling and marathon effort to the wee small hours. Most competitors and sponsors arrived Friday night and the area near the Hilton quickly became a sea of caravans, camper trailers and tents. As usual, our visitors were given the prime positions with Club members being scattered around the property at Garvey’s Whoopsy and the Bachelor Pad. This year the Yarck CFA put on a sausage sizzle as a fundraiser for their brigade, which was a resounding success – so much so they ran out of food. Hopefully this will become an annual event as it not only puts back into the local community, but also provides a much needed service for dusty and tired volunteers and competitors. The Light Force Night Drive was on once again, and as usual was a somewhat hysterical spectacle, akin to an old fashioned night time car rally, albeit in fourwheel drive mode. The photos have to be seen to be believed, as were the grins when the competitors returned – in some
uags.com.au 12 Overland Cruisering
cases somewhat embarrassed. Torches were the order of the day, and it would appear that there are parts of our property that not a lot of members have seen yet. The prize of a pair of Light Force Genesis driving lights was certainly worth the effort. Thankfully, Saturday dawned perfect with sunny skies and moderate temperatures. The 44 competitors and 80 marshals got down to work. There were no new events this year, but there was plenty of laughs and some serious concentration with most of the events being run on the Saturday. We were very pleased to have a large contingent from Terrain Tamer this year, with 2 teams competing and Skye Johnson, Marketing Coordinator from the company attending with her family. Airport Toyota also entered a car with 2 drivers, which was apparently the Tradies Ute loan car. Co-driver Warren Smeal even won the Novice prize. Other sponsors attending were Reece from Hastings Camping (who as usual was extremely generous with prizes and small gifts for Lead Marshals, Graham Cahill representing Happy Camper Gourmet and Club Shop, Darren from High Country Camping in Mansfield and they all ran a stall at the Bus Stop competition area. We really thank them as well as all our other sponsors for their magnificent support, and hopefully our event gives them some excellent PR. We have many of the major companies in the 4WD community behind this event, including ARB and Piranha as Major Partners, closely followed by Terrain Tamer as Platinum Sponsor and Guests 4x4, Kaymar, Powerful 4x4, Light Force, Southern Cross Canvas Products, Airport Toyota and 4x4 Australia. What is also wonderful is that a number of smaller family owned companies give us tremendous support with prizes and discounted rates on purchases. There are too many to list, but they are all on the Cruiserkhana web site so please support them. A table of results is attached in this handout. We had a number of TLCCV competitors that did well, including Wayne Jinks,

Page 10
Brad & Melody Schaffer and Gunther & Mina Scheffel and Robert Karkut. It’s obviously impossible to do each event justice, but the photos will give some indication of the fun had by all. As usual, the TLCCV cooks surpassed themselves, ably led by Grace Azzam (Dinner) and John & Wendy Wilson and Jan Chivers (Kiosk) with Annie coordinating the mammoth task of purchasing food for over 200 people. The sponsors enjoyed the TLCCV supplied happy hour and new friends were made. Grace Azzam was the surprised and proud recipient of a Terrain Tamer Recovery Kit for the best behind the scenes volunteer, and certainly no one could argue with that choice. The guys at Terrain Tamer weren’t even asked for this prize – they just rocked up with it. Results of the Cruiserkhana raffle are elsewhere in the mag – the raffle was very much all above board but it was a little embarrassing that the first 3 prizes went to the Chief Marshal and two members of the Executive Committee with Dave from Terrain Tamer taking out the fourth prize. The Sunday events of the Bog Hole, Tent Comp (both optional) and the Flag Slalom, Timber Challenge and Mud Track were run in record time, and whilst the presentations were slightly late due to logistic reasons, all was over, done and dusted by mid-afternoon. The clean-up crew worked very hard and most tasks were finished by Sunday night, although a number of us didn’t leave until Monday lunchtime as there is always a million odds and ends to tie up. Club members really need to say a very big thank you to all those that volunteered for the event. It’s a real showcase for the Club and networking amongst sponsors and other Clubs. Additionally, it is the Club’s major fundraiser for the year, and whilst final figures aren’t in yet, the indications are that Cruiserkhana has bolstered the Club’s coffers well. Publicity and planning has already commenced for next year’s Cruiserkhana with the date being set for 15th to 17th April. We look forward to a lot more TLCCV Club competitors in a valiant attempt to wrestle the Inter Club Trophy back from the Pajero Club to its real home – TLCCV. Lastly, many thanks are required to UAG for sponsoring this part of the magazine with a substantial donation. They are a new sponsor for 2015, and have been extremely generous with both their prize and their contribution towards printing costs. Angela Di Lallo (225) CRUISERKHANA SPONSORSHIP/ PUBLICITY

CHAINSAW COURSE
12-14th June, 2015
The TLCCV 2015 chainsaw course will be held at the Yarck property on the weekend of Friday 12th – Sunday 14th June. The theory session will start promptly at 7:00pm so you will need to arrive beforehand and get your camp set up. Saturday morning will consist with the maintenance module and will be done under the covered area at the rear of the hut (please keep that in mind if setting swags up in that area). Saturday afternoon and Sunday we will be out cutting, looking to finish around 2:00pm – 3:00pm Sunday. The training delivered will produce a nationally recognised certificate that will enable you to cut fallen wood on the Club property and clear wood from tracks on DSE land. (Note: this is not a tree felling course). The trainer has also recommended that you use premium fuel and carry enough fuel and bar oil for the whole weekend. Cost is $250 per person to be paid to TLCCV by the 1st June. (The Treasurer will track payments and confirm when payment has cleared). You will require: • 1 x chainsaw in good working order per person. • Minimum 10 litres fuel and enough bar oil for the weekend. • Chaps / cut proof pants. • Safety helmet. • Leather, steel-capped boots (the trainer will accept composite safety boots, however he stressed that steel-capped boots will stop the chain if it hits your toes). • Face shield or goggles or safety glasses. • Hearing protection e.g ear muffs or plugs. • Fitted clothing – no loose items. • Gloves. • All your regular gear for camping at Yarck (wet weather / warm clothing and food). To apply for your spot on this course, please email the Training Coordinator at: training@tlccv.com.au with the completed training application form: http://www.tlccv.com.au/forms/TLCCV-Training%20Application-2013-08.pdf Once I have received the completed training application form and the Club has received the training fee, your position will be locked in. Any outstanding fees after the 1st June will cause you to lose your place. As you can appreciate the trainer has to have firm numbers so he can organize equipment and trainers to run the course. 4WDing across MacFarlane Flat: We all assembled at Bruthen caravan park to begin our MacFarlane Flat adventure. A great little park run by an interesting character, who has put a lot of his personality into the park - great spot to stop over. First up Laurie gave us a run-down of the trip ahead - not saying it was long winded, but Heidi did bring a stool (something about a sore knee, but I wasn’t convinced – LOL!). Soon after we were rolling down the blacktop on the Princes Hwy in brilliant sunshine, anticipating a great long weekend. We soon made the left turn to Buchan. On our approach to Buchan, we enjoyed the spectacular views of the area and interesting conversations on the radio. Many other 4WDs were in the area this morning as our convoy proceeded through Buchan. As we veered left onto the Snowy River Rd toward Jindabyne, our journey changed to a good dirt road.
80 Series TD 76 Series TD 80 Series Diesel Prado 120 Series TD Nissan Patrol TD 100 Series TD Prado TD 78 Troopy TD HiLux Twin Cab TD The road briefly returned to bitumen as we passed through the area of Wulgulmerang. As we enter the Alpine National Park, the road becomes narrow winding and has along drop off, thankfully on the other side of the road. We arrived in Suggan Buggan picnic area to enjoy our first stop for the day. Here, we chatted with two local Orbost men that had set up camp. They were waiting some others to join them for a working bee at the historic school house, situated across the road. Continuing on, our next turn off is the Ingeegoodbee track - the entrance being a tight left hand turn. This is the start of our real 4WDing for the day, as we now encounter some enjoyable steeper, rocky climbs. Laurie informs the convoy that we are only 5km from the NSW border, and cruising along at 1037 m. There is a lot of evidence of horses in the centre of track, Brumby
droppings, & Trail bike rider tyre marks. The left turn on MacFarlane Flat track brings us a steep descent down 500m to the Ingeegoodbee River crossing, where we stop at our picturesque lunch stop. A short but steep climb takes us onward. Soon we are up on MacFarlane Flat. The views are sensational before dropping back down to the Berrima River ahead of schedule. Laurie & Heidi decide to move on further to the Suggan Buggan River. So our convoy moves on taking the left fork onto Cobberas Track passing a poor deceased Brumby foal. We descend to a wonderful camping area on the Suggan Buggan River, and set up camp in a quiet secluded spot next to the river. Linda & Laurie Wilson- Mbr 2314

Great views from Mt Cobberas No. 1 After leaving campsite around 8:30am, we commenced the climb up the Cobberas Trail. The track was dry, and although rutted was in reasonable condition and all participants enjoyed the 4WDing. Morning Tea was at ‘The ‘Playgrounds’. The Playgrounds is a lovely picturesque campsite up at 1,300M so a cold night was expected. After our morning tea break we took off our 4WDing boots and donned our walking boots for a hike to the top of Mt Cobberas No. 1 up at 1750 metres – an assent of about 400metres over 7kms. Drifter and Panda both tested their footwear for waterproofing and found that water will still come in if you put your foot in the creeks!!!. At the 4 km mark, at an elevation of 1655m, Drifter and Wilson felt their race had been run and after a short breather, decided to return to the campsite. On their way back they spotted a 1.5 m black snake and heard a pack of Brumbies thundering through the bush – Wilson counted 5 to 6 horses. The remainder of the group continued the remaining 3 km to the top of Mt Cobbras No. 1. Heidi was leading the walkers from the front, while Laurie was rear guard. Vince, who hadn’t been walking for many years, struggled at the back. I hear Laurie gave him plenty of encouragement as Vince managed to dip his shoes in a couple of tricky creek crossings. However, Laurie managed to drag Vince right to the summit, if only about 20 minutes after the rest of the group had arrived. We hear the 360 degree views from the summit were pretty spectacular. They even watched a small plane fly in and set off an interesting controlled burn about 10kms to the south towards Gelantipy. In the meantime Drifter and Wilson enjoyed the freedom of having the campsite to themselves.
Sometime later the “heroes” returned (the first around 3pm & the stragglers around 3:30pm) in a “stuffed and exhausted” state having completed the 14 km hike. Most agreed that fitness was not their forte – Panda collapsed into a chair & tried to refreash with a coldie, while James enjoyed a snooze. Happy hour was now the order of the day, and although somewhat subdued, the discussions centred around the interesting but enjoyable hike. With a cold night expected, a great warm campfire was soon blazing away with many cooking over the open fire and producing some sumptous meals. Reg Schlipalius (Drifter) – Mbr 1825
Heading across Native Cat Flat to Swifts Creek After a chilly night down at 3 degrees on the Playgrounds, it was time to make our way south. We were soon passing Native Dog Flat which is also the location of the head waters of the Buchan River. After a short drive along the Black Mountain Road, it was time to head offroad again, crossing Native Cat flat. Although flat, the track was quite rutted and needed care by each driver to make sure they stayed on the track. It was now time to head down the 2WD Nunniong Road. At times, brumbies could be seen crossing the road ahead. A right turn onto Garron Point Track made our 4WDs go back into low 4, as we descended the steep track down to Hell’s Gate (also known as Hells Hate Hole). After a short break, we crossed the Tambo River & ascended back up to the Nunniong road. A lunch break was taken at Moscow Villas (one of the best High Country huts up at 1,200M). It was now time to wind down our trip, so a winding Nunniong Road took us right down to Swifts Creek. This was a great 3 day trip, which combined plenty of great 4WDing, some interesting bush walking with some fantastic scenery in a special part of east Victoria. Laurie & Heidi Miles – Mbr 1058

Wheel Bearing weekend at Yarck – 7th & 8th March, 2015
T
he following individuals were fortunate enough to attend the wheel bearing course run by Matt Lilley and Simon Mustey on the 7th & 8th March at Yarck: Michelle Dodkins & David McAlister, Paul “Tracks” Hawden, Malcolm Kingston, Michael Bourke, Eamonn King, Michael Winand, John Nazloomian, Gabi Azzam, Sally & Neville Kidd, Joe Carpenzano. Here are some of their reflections: “We arrived on the Friday night, filled with high expectations for the wheel bearing and CV replacement course. The first day we replaced the front assemblies and the second day we tackled the rear wheels. It was information overload – spindles, drifts, cone washes were all words to add to our 4WD vernacular. Simon and Matt did great explanations on all the critical steps and tricky processes needed to complete the dis-assembly and re-assembly of the wheel bearings and CV joints. We learnt what to do in case we broke a CV out in the bush and to continue on in 3 wheel drive. A really great weekend!” “Very informative weekend. Learned the inner workings of bearings and how to change them. Simon was a great instructor explaining everything in detail with further explanation if required. Now feeling much more confident in being able to change our own and thinking now of having a crack at it!” “Grease is the word. It was a very informative weekend. Thank you Simon for sharing your knowledge and Matthew for trusting us to play with your vehicle.”
26 Overland Cruisering
“We started with the traditional Friday night meal around the fire at the Yarck Hilton. Saturday we started bright and early with Matt’s 80 Series, front end raised. Eager students crowded around Simon as the carnage commenced. Piece by piece parts were dis-assembled as Simon explained the procedure step by step. The car was put to the test at the end of the day and much to Matt’s delight, no wheels fell off and the vehicle survived a night drive around the property. A pleasant weekend, fantastic learning opportunity and convivial company. Life is great.” “I wanted to attend this course because the donor vehicle was the same as mine. The information and demonstration was invaluable. I now know how my truck works, how to take it apart and rebuild it. The CV replacement and re-build was a bonus over and above what I expected. Simon and Matt provided a wealth of information and hands on experience. Well done guys.” “What another great opportunity to get together to get to know other members better and to meet new ones and to repair your truck at home or in the bush. There were so many steps and technical things to know. So many new words and terminologies. Tight seal, brass drift, Molly grease, seal removers, impact driver, breaker bar, inner bearing, outers, torque wrench, ball joints, bearing packing, cone washer removal with a drift (not the smoking type) lock nuts, Tom Thumb (all-purpose utility pump) ball separator and Simon’s favorite blue STV silicone. As usual, the Nazloomian paparazzi was around every corner.” “Simon instructed us to wear old clothes
and expect to get dirty! Who would have thought so many bits could be pulled out of a wheel? Not to mention chucked in a bucket in no particular order, cleaned, degreased with kero then meth, re-greased and coaxed back into their original position more often than not with a lot of brute force (expletives were rare despite the challenges). It was a complete foreign language to me. We whaled away on drifts removing an extraordinary number of different washers and nuts and used tools that would be the envy of surgeons. We learnt the importance of grease in its various forms, the importance of torque, flanges, seals and sealant. My message from the weekend is I am awfully glad my engineering husband appears to have comprehended all the steps we learnt and has a far better understanding of the wheel components. That out in the bush if your CV joint goes you can clean out the broken bits, remove the axle, plug the axle housing with a rag to keep the diff oil in place and limp to the nearest garage. In the event this should occur, I will offer lots of advice (poor Neville), be tool and grease monkey and provide refreshments and lots of encouragement. I recommend this course to all the ladies in the club. It was great fun and I now have a much greater appreciation of our mechanic!” Well done Matt and Simon for organizing such a great weekend and for sharing your skills and experience with us all. We all enjoyed a lot of laughs and greatly improved our knowledge of our vehicles. A hear felt thanks from us all. We recommend this course to everyone.

ARB UNVEILS ALLOY BULL BAR Built around a proven yet entirely distinct architecture, the ARB Alloy bar is setting a new standard for aluminium bull bars. With modern passenger vehicles offering features such as vehicle integrated safety cells, dynamic chassis setups and a greater emphasis on fuel economy, alloy bull bars provide another option for when the ultimate strength characteristics afforded bya steel bull bar may not suit an individual’s requirements. The Alloy bar includes unmistakable ARB heritage that is instantly recognisable on and off the road. Through contemporary styling, the Alloy bar has been developed to complement modern vehicle design and achieve a fully integrated appearance with the use of clean design cues and wide centre grille section. 4mm aluminium alloy is used for the outer wings and centre pan for maximum strength, while 60mm alloy
outer tubing provides a fresh characteristic that evokes a purposeful yet commanding presence. ARB’s renowned steel mounting system secures the Alloy bull bar to the vehicle using a series of high tensile bolts. Steel mounts ensure the bar is capable of dealing with demanding winch loads without affecting air bag deployment.
Press forming is used extensively throughout the manufacturing process, contributing to the overall strength of the Alloy bull bar, as well as its ultra-premium style. Continuous, rounded edges further enhance functionality and laser cut holes allow for the fitment of ARB Intensity LED and IPF driving lights. A winch cover panel neatly finishes the bar for when a winch is not fitted, and the allnew winch clutch opening, concealed in the grille section, removes the need for clutch cut outs in the top pan. Three grades of aluminium alloy are utilised in the construction of the ARB Alloy bull bar, each specifically selected for
maximum corrosion resistance and high fatigue. The visually stunning polished aluminium appearance is further enhanced through the use of the CMT (cold metal transfer) and TIG welding processes. The Alloy bull bar has undergone significant testing during development, including extensive Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to evaluate the structural performance of the new bar, while field testing conducted at the Australian Automotive Research Centre provided ARB with real world results via repeatable and controlled variable testing. Winch load evaluation has also been performed with winch loads of up to 10,000lbs being placed upon the Alloy bull bar. For more information on the ARB Alloy bull bar, visit arb.com.au

BUSHFIRE PLAN
The Toyota Land Cruiser Club does not recommend a “Stay and Defend” plan. Infrastructure on the property can be replaced. FIRE DANGER PERIOD [November – May] It is members’ responsibility to listen to radio news reports each evening during the Fire Danger Period for advice on the possibility of fires. Also be up to date with any declaration of Total Fire Ban Days. Yarck is in the NORTH CENTRAL FIRE BAN DISTRICT-149 Rennies Lane, GOBUR It is recommended that members leave the property the day before a declared Total Fire Ban day or very early in the morning of a Total Fire Ban day Members should not go to the property during any Total Fire Ban day. EVACUATION Those present will select one person from their number to take charge, The issue of evacuation during an emergency must be addressed early in the planning. Evacuation can be extremely dangerous unless it takes place well in advance of the fire hazard entering the general area of the camp. Roads may be blocked with fallen timber and visibility reduced by thick smoke. Increased pressures on emergency services may make it difficult for them to render assistance.
Evacuation should only be done via the main access track to Rennies Lane and the Gobur –Yarck Road. REFUGE There are NO bushfire proof shelters on the property. If a fire incident occurs and members cannot leave the property, then the Hut could possibly be used as a “safer place” to provide protection from radiant heat. It should be made as fire safe as is practical. Wet towels to be placed under doors to prevent embers entering. There is running water inside; there are knapsacks and fire extinguishers. Other equipment to have on hand should include. A battery operated am/fm radio and P2 filter masks. UHF radios left on – mobile phones – torches – first aid kits – drinking fluids. Clothing - it is advisable to have long trousers, long sleeved shirt and sturdy footwear. Gloves and hat are also useful. The wearing of shorts, dresses, thongs or any synthetic fabrics is totally unsuitable. Be prepared for smoke and embers that may enter the building. After the fire front has passed check outside and extinguish any burning embers or fires around the hut. All vehicles should be parked on bare ground, facing towards the exit with all doors and windows closed and keys in
the ignition. DO NOT BLOCK OFF ANY ACCESS TRACKS. Alarm, A distinctive alarm signal should be used, a simple manual device such as the triangle hanging in the tree outside the hut or the electronic device near the radios in the hut. Panic. This is something that can well be done without. Anyone showing signs of panic should be kept under some form of supervision, and provided with reassurance and prevented from doing anything rash. COMMUNICATION and CONTACTS • Phone: 1800 240 667 for Bushfire information. • 000 only to report a fire. • Alexandra Fire Station Phone 0357721855 • Yarck Fire Captain Phone 0357734334.
