PRESIDENT’S REPORT

t was a cold night but a huge number of people turned up to the 2014 Annual General Meeting. There were many faces there that we have not seen for a long time. Thank you one and all for taking the time to attend. In opening I would like to say thank you to you the members for re-electing me as President of the Club for a further year. I would like to thank you all for your confidence, thus allowing me the ability to finalise some of the projects that I so dearly want to see completed. Those projects include the design and implementation of a new web site and membership system, an extensive and ongoing training program and financial stability. My commiserations to Laurie Miles my opponent who was also standing for the role of President. I would like to take a moment to congratulate the following committee members for their appointment to the committee... Adriano Denni (Vice President), Sandra Tanner (Secretary), Ian Wells (Asst. Secretary), Alan McMeekin (Treasurer), Steve de Mamiel (Asst. Treasurer) and Russell Edwards & Adam Takacs (Committee). I am especially delighted to see a number of new faces to the committee and thank them for putting their hands up in running for the committee and thus help the club. At the AGM a number of questions were raised from the floor on the issue of the accounts. Unfortunately as the Treasurer was not able to attend it fell to me to answer them. Had I been aware of the questions I would have made sure that I had the answers on hand. Nonetheless I thought it prudent of me to correct one of the answers that was provided at the

I

FROM THE EDITOR As you know, I don’t normally do an Editor’s column, but this month it is necessary as I was very remiss by not including the Annual Social Report in the July magazine with all the other annual reports. I would like to expressing my sincere apologies to Rebecca and Helen for not including their Social report, and ask that all members please make sure they read it in this August edition of Overland Cruisering. I hope I’m forgiven?? Sandra Tanner (607) EDITOR

meeting. A question was raised from the floor regarding why the annual accounts had not been audited. The correct answer should have been that the accounts had not been audited based on a resolution made at the 2013 AGM where it was pointed out that according to Consumer Affairs, it was no longer necessary for a yearly audit to be conducted. It was agreed therefore that a review committee consisting of Tony Bryant, John Wilson and Marcus Kunath would be appointed as they are qualified accountants to review the accounts. This would in turn save the Club approximately $800 per annum. Prior to this the Club was fortunate to have the accounts audited on a voluntary basis, and that person was treated as an honorary member, however there was quite a waiting period when this was done. Based on the resolution made at this year’s AGM to have the accounts audited, the committee will nonetheless arrange for this to be done and a copy of the report provided to members when it is to hand. All members should by now be aware that we have been working on a project to develop the Forecourt at Yarck. At the last committee meeting the result of the vote was tabled. The voting was very close and although those in favor were ever so slightly greater than those against the committee have decided not to proceed with the project at this stage. There is a more substantial article on this elsewhere in the magazine that all members should read. The reality is more work is needed. At the committee meeting the issue of Membership was discussed and it was agreed that a review will be conducted. Members will have the opportunity to have

SITE VISIT

their say in due course. The committee has for some months been working on a better solution to the Temporary Membership situation with the aim to make it is as easy as possible and also allow last minute passengers to go along on Club trips. We are pleased that a revolutionary system has been established and will be rolled out to members shortly. I also note with interest that trips to the snow are about to take place. I hope that all participants have a really great time and make sure that reports are put into the magazine. Finally I would like to congratulate all those recipients of awards at the AGM. Let it be noted that your contribution has been noted. To Brian Steward (recipient of the President’s award) I say thank you for all that you have done for the Club including your ongoing support for our wonderful property Yarck. I know that you have a group of diehards that help you out, but I can say with certainty that the property and the Club has benefited from your extensive involvement. Thank you! Well that’s all for now, but I know that the committee have a lot on their plate and will be looking for members to be involved. Don't forget that the various sub-committees will all need your support so make sure to put your hand up to help out, as after all many hands make light work. See you all soon... fter 12 months of workshop, robust discussion, feedback and investigation, the July AGM saw the last of the votes collected to inform the decision on whether or not to proceed with the Yarck Forecourt project. The final tally of 99 votes resulted in a split decision (50 in favour to 49 against) suggesting that the membership is not presently completely behind the project. The Committee was expecting a clear majority either one way or the other, but it is doubtful that anyone anticipated this result. The result was presented at the July Executive meeting and after much discussion, a decision was reached that in the short term at least, the Club should not proceed with the project. However, whilst many members are not quite ready for big changes at Yarck, it is evident that any changes to it should be carefully considered. For those that voted in favour of the project, all is not lost. There has been great discussion in many forums – sometimes heated and sometimes

A

inspiring suggesting that members are really thinking about the future. These discussions and engagement are a great outcome and we will continue looking at ideas that will ensure the sustainability of our wonderful Club. The Committee notes that many other suggestions for Yarck have been made during the process, e.g a children’s play area, flying fox, improved camping areas, ramp upgrades for 200 Series LC and other general infrastructure. Many of these have been communicated to the relevant parties, and in fact, work already undertaken to address some suggestions. The Yarck Management team and amazing volunteers have undertaken a mountain of work over the past 12 months alone with regards to campsite improvements, caravan parking expansions and most recently at the July Maintenance & Construction weekend, upgrading the ramp. We are fortunate to belong to a Club that

can boast an asset like Yarck. We are the envy of our peers and we should continually seek ways to improve our position, our value proposition and to make all aspects of our Club stronger. This is certainly the Executive Committee’s goal. Adriano Denni (1298) VICE PRESIDENT, TLCCV (On behalf of the Executive Committee)

ANNUAL SOCIAL REPORT Bowling Night – 17th August 2013. Fifteen eager players arrived at the Clayton AMF Bowling venue on a cold and wet Saturday evening. Two teams completed the first round of games with refreshments served before the second round commenced. The beginners had now mastered the basics and began to score much better. Everyone had a great night with plenty of laughs and high fives for those who had scored a ‘strike’. All who came along had been amply rewarded for venturing out on such a wintry night. Il Carretto – 21st September 2013. Members and friends spent over three hours catching up with one another. The wait staff did a great job catering for sixteen hungry people as this venue is well patronized on busy Nicholson Street, North Carlton. We all had a good time over hearty Italian fare. Werribee Zoo – 19th October 2013. What a wonderful day this turned out to be

with sunny weather and an ideal temperature of 27. Highlight was the guided safari tour in a 4WD bus, which took us through the vast open range areas where various animals including Bison, Antelope, Giraffe, Zebra and Cheetah could be seen roaming freely on the Savannah plains. The Meerkat Bistro served up delicious lunches before the group continued on the selfguided walks on offer. Everyone went home having had an interesting and enjoyable day. Rock ‘N Roll Night – 22nd February 2014. The Hilton on the Hill was transformed into a hall reminiscent of the 50’s and 60’s with themed balloons, tablecloths, popcorn boxes, posters and stage backdrops with R’n’R memorabilia. Platters of warm treats were delivered to each table which, were especially well received by those that had been toiling outdoors as it was also Maintenance and Construction weekend. Russell and Lesley Edwards gave the audi-

ence a demonstration of a dance from the era after which DJ, James Azzam invited everyone to join them on the floor. Grace and her army of helpers did an amazing job of catering for such a large group. Prizes were awarded for Best Dressed Lady/Man/Couple. The entertainment could have gone on all night judging by the number of people on the floor, and seeing everyone enjoy themselves made all the hard work putting this event together worthwhile. RIOS Brazilian Theatre Restaurant – 10th May 2014. This event is being finalised at time of writing. Expressions of Interest were requested some eight months ago and there has been a good response for this night and The Blues Train in September. Helen (2098) and Rebecca (2270)

SALES MILESTONE GREETS NEW LANDCRUISER oyota has announced an impressive sales milestone for LandCruiser wagon in Australia while releasing a value-laden "Altitude" special-edition model that offers more than $5,000 of added luxury, comfort, safety and convenience. The arrival of the new 200 Series Altitude closely follows delivery of the 300,000th LandCruiser station wagon - just one of the many variants offered locally to carry Toyota's longest-running nameplate. Powered exclusively by a twin-turbo V8 diesel engine, the eight-seat Altitude is based on the LandCruiser GXL grade with premium paint. Just 600 examples are being produced. It gains a raft of features usually reserved for the higher-grade LandCruiser 200 Series VX and Sahara models, yet it is priced just $1,505 more than the host vehicle at $91,220*. The Altitude's extra equipment includes larger 18-inch alloy wheels with lowerprofile tyres, black leather-accented interior, premium-wrapped steering wheel and gear-shift knob, power front seats, front foglamps, cool box and a choice of five premium colours. The new Altitude, like all LandCruiser 200 Series wagons, is fitted with a Multi-Terrain ABS^ that adapts to driving conditions such as sand, mud and gravel by detecting engine output, acceleration and wheel speed. It also features Toyota's off-road cruise-

T

control system, CRAWL, which has five low-speed settings and disengages at speeds over 25km/h. CRAWL automatically controls the engine output and brake hydraulic pressure to maintain a low uniform vehicle speed with minimal wheel spin or lock-up, allowing the driver to concentrate fully on steering. The 195kW, 650Nm twin-turbo V8 common-rail diesel engine, mated to an electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission, achieves fuel economy of 10.3 litres/100km** for a theoretical range of more than 1,300km from its 93-litre main and 45-litre sub tanks. All LandCruiser 200 series models attract a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

The Altitude has eight airbags, vehicle stability and active traction control, and trailer sway control - designed to assist if a towed vehicle becomes unsettled by crosswinds, bumpy roads or sharp turns of the steering wheel. Braked towing capacity is 3.5 tonnes. A 6.1-inch LCD screen displays images from the reversing camera and satellite navigation system#. The Altitude comes in five exterior colours - Crystal Pearl and Eclipse Black (both previously reserved for VX and Sahara), Silver Pearl, Graphite and Shimmer.

(Reprinted with acknowledgments to Battery World) nfrequently used vehicles: When questioned about batteries that fail, the common answer is the vehicle was not used for some time. Typical are the hobby car, motorcycle or jet ski, boat, etc. Not all are big boy’s toys. Rural Fire Brigades have trucks on standby but if the battery fails, lives could be lost. Sulphation is the enemy of batteries: When a battery is allowed to discharge below the nominal 12.5 Volts a process called sulphation starts to damage your battery. Effectively the chemicals from the electrolyte start to separate; the sulphur from the battery acid commences to form lead sulphate crystals on the battery plate. Within 3 months the battery will be seriously damaged with a build-up of crystals causing the plate to harden and resist charge, or fail to hold charge. Eventually, the lead sulp0hate crystals will short out the cell rendering the battery totally useless. Recovery: Once sulphation has attacked the battery there will always be some permanent damage but there are some chargers on the market that use multi stage charging that can recover a partially sulphated battery. These are chargers with a ripple or pulse charge stage. In the initial stages of charge the charger uses a pulse or ripple charge to dislodge lead sulphate from the plates this will then recombine with the sulfuric acid electrolyte. Other reasons for battery failure: A flat or discharged battery is not necessarily a failure! Continual charge and discharge of a normal automotive battery is highly detrimental to the life of the battery. However, some batteries are specifically designed with thicker plates to withstand heavy cycling. This will lead to premature failure. Every time you leave the lights on and flatten the battery, you take about 6 months off the life of the batter, and recharging that battery from flat can rarely be done in the vehicle. Electrolyte starvation (low water level): Australia’s harsh climate creates enormous demands on auto batteries. High ambient temperature and extreme under bonnet temperature causes high rates of water evaporation. If the busbar in the top of the battery is not fully covered sulphation can occur and accelerate corrosion. Water loss also causes an increased concentration of acid within the body of the battery and also causes acceleration of plate corrosion. Failure to maintain the battery’s water level does void any warranty so it’s well worth checking the battery at every service or, if living in tropical climates, possibly every week. Some batteries have a magic eye or visual hydrometer, which monitors one cell as an indicator if the battery needs service. Vibration: Serious vibration will cause battery damage by shaking out the lead

I

4 Overland Cruisering

paste that makes a battery plate. Batteries should be properly held down and, in the case of some trucks, an under battery rubber mat should be installed to prolong the life. Overcharging: If the vehicle’s charge system is not properly regulated the battery may receive excessive voltage or continuous charge. Not being shut down when the battery is fully charged will result in faster water loss, and plate growth. Visual indicators that a battery is being overcharged are: • Spatter of electrolyte across the top of the battery (excited electrolyte caused by high charge rate). • Heavy black sooty deposits under the vent caps. • Bulging of the battery (plate growth pushes the ends outward). Undercharging: Low charge voltage or insufficient recovery, i.e stop/start, very short run motoring or only using the vehicle once a week may cause a gradual discharge of the battery, which leads to sulphation and the ultimate destruction of the battery. Alternators should be checked for correct charge rate on a regular basis. Battery Corrosion: High temperatures can cause “mushy” plates, rapidly increasing plate corrosion. High antimony content in the lead alloy helps to reduce corrosion, unlike softer calcium alloy lead plates. In the end, the battery becomes an electro chemical reaction bathed in an acid solution. A battery has a normal operating life of about 3-31/2 years after which the chemical reaction will deteriorate until the battery will no longer start the vehicle. Open Circuit Failure: Sometimes the battery just ceases. It started the car in the morning, but at lunchtime would not even bring up dash lights. This is usually open circuit or no voltage output, broken/corroded cell to cell connection or broken/corroded busbar. Both of these will break the circuit so that there is no voltage output from the battery. Short Circuit Failure: Vibration can cause plates to distort and touch each other. Should a positive plate make direct contact with a negative plate a short will occur and the battery fails. High quality batteries have envelope separators which encase one value plate to prevent contact with another.

Shorts can also be caused by impure water top up, such as water with heavy iron deposits. Zinc and other metals present in water can also cause plate failure. Always use demineralized or distilled water to top up your battery. Right battery for the application: There are many batteries on the Australian market ranging from cheap to very expensive. How long the battery lasts depends very much on the usage, almost no two applications are the same. Even with the same model vehicle, one may have high power accessories, one may use air conditioning. We can make generalisations, but there is no substitute for experience. Tailoring a battery is like fitting the right pair of shoes. The battery has to perform to meet the needs of the usage. Fitting a light-weight battery into a heavy duty vehicle with high power demands is only a short term solution and in the long run, more expensive than buying the correct battery first. Prevention is the best cure: If possible, keep batteries fully charged either with regular daily use, ensuring that your alternator and charging systems are fully functional and set to appropriate charging voltage. If this is not possible we recommend the use of a standby charger. Depending on the size of the battery standby chargers are available from 0.75 Amp upwards. These products are designed to top up charge after use and then switch to a floating mode with enough power to keep the battery at optimum charge. In some cases the charger may be permanently installed in the vehicle. There are many chargers at a variety of price levels. If the battery is in a remote location a solar module can be used. Depending on the size of battery or battery bank, solar panels are suitable to assist in keeping a battery at peak charge.

n attendance: Adrian & Wendy Froggatt, Colin & Chris Lowe, John & Wendy Wilson, Corine Pepping and Frank De Smaele, Helen Foley, Nicole Yap and her Mum, Slawko Kulyk and Rebecca. Fergusson Winery, located in the rolling hills of the Yarra Valley, is spread over 20 acres. The rustic restaurant, with floor to ceiling windows, overlooks the vineyard where one can view the dormant vines neatly pruned ready for regeneration when the warmer weather arrives. The little white chapel, used for wedding ceremonies, can be seen in the distance. A cozy group of eager TLCCV members arrived at the restaurant and were seated at a long table covered in a crisp white tablecloth, decked out with tableware and decorated with Christmas decorations. At the far end of the table was a huge fireplace in which a few logs were burning slowly and helped set the scene normally experienced in the north at Christmas time. A replica of a penny farthing bicycle adorned the wall near our table and this generated much discussion. While waiting for the last of our group to arrive, the phone rang. It was Helen, Nicole and her Mum. They had somehow ended up at Healesville Racecourse! It was revealed later that the Tom Tom had lost reception and they had come across a road sign advising that they were headed for Yea! Thanks to Slawko’s expertise in over-the-phone navigation, our three latecomers duly arrived and were seated at a table next to the fire to warm up. Menus were handed round, which gave us

advantage of the cellar door just a short flight of stairs down from where we were seated. Time had moved on and it was getting late. A light drizzle had begun mid-afternoon and the mild temperature experienced earlier in the day had turned cooler. This failed to dampen the spirits of our cozy group who had had a wonderful time enjoying a hearty three-course meal with fellow Club members in the popular Yarra Valley. Yarck Management Maintenance and Construction weekend 19th & 20th July, 2014 Members present: Ted Gray, Bill Motschall, Brian Stewart, Garry Cooper, Peter Burchall, Trajco Vilarov, Colin Low, Graham Dart, Andrew & Jenny Poon. A very cold start to a clear, sunny weekend. Saturday morning Bill and Ted headed to the pile of ti-tree and after many attempts got it to burn and kept watch on it for the day, a job well done. Peter, Colin and Graham went to the bush hut to complete the gable ends and put the shade cloth and battens on one side of the roof. Garry had all the gear to modify the ramps on the vehicle inspection area so that 200 Series L/Cs can use it. He was very ably assisted by Trajco who could test the finished job with his 200. Andrew was on hand to approve the modification. Colin was able to show Jenny & Andrew what was being planned for the wildlife observation as they have indicated interest in helping with it. a choice of entrees and desserts. The main course consisted of the traditional Christmas fare from the carvery of roast – rare or well done, ham and turkey. We then helped ourselves at the buffet, which offered cooked vegetables and salads plus all the different sauces and condiments. The servings were delicious and plentiful with some struggling to leave an empty plate. However, there is always room for sweets and the sticky date puddings, Toblerone cheesecakes, lemon tarts and a few cheese platters went down very well followed by teas and coffees. Some of us had found the wine accompanying the meal to be most agreeable and took

from the entry gate was cleared; this allowed the flooded track to drain. The property is very wet with rainfall recorded for the past three months being 62ml-88ml and 106ml. A longer chain was put on the entry gate;

now there is no reason not to lock it properly. Sunday morning was clean up time including removal of a tree from across the track to Garvey’s. Dead and dangerous trees were felled behind the toilet block, these can be used for the Chainsaw Course coming up in September. Plus the regular items, pump water to the top tanks, fill the toilet roll holders, re-stack the wood bin in the hut, but not with huge blocks. Make sure all equipment is packed up and everything locked. Time to head home, another great weekend, thanks to the team. Maybe you will be part of the team on the 23rd & 24th August?
