MEET THE LOCALS. THIS IS LANDCRUISER COUNTRY.
Long days. Harsh environments. Extreme weather. You could say it’s pretty tough out here, but the locals wouldn’t have it any other way. In the face of extreme adversity the LandCruiser 200, LandCruiser 70 Double Cab, FJ Cruiser and Prado are built to thrive. Whatever the outback throws at them, it’s just another day in paradise. This is LandCruiser Country.

In November, 1974 the Club launched its first sticker which raised some eyebrows but said it all: “DON’T BUGGER THE BUSH” BE ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS 1974 was an especially busy year – could almost have been labeled “The Year of the Clean Up.” Australia Day long weekend was chosen as the date for the Lake Cobbler clean-up – the amount of rubbish removed was significant – everyone pitched in and worked really hard to make a difference to this remote spot. The early months of ’75 were also devoted to planning the first CRUISERKHANA! What an undertaking for a small Club – but it was highly successful -held at Matlock on 22nd and 23rd February with a range of events over both days. TOYOTA LAND CRUISER CLUB OF AUSTRALIA - VICTORIA BRANCH the overall first prize and Pauline Ryan the Ladies Award. Significant prizes were donated by many businesses and supporters, including a Power Take Off Unit from Princetown Motors, and Bill received a set of Uni Royal tyres and the Thiess Perpetual Cup – which is a bit of a mystery – does it still exist? The dust had barely settled on Matlock when it was down to the coast of Cape Schank for the next clean up in conjunction with Parks Victoria. Car bodies thrown over the cliff presented some challenges, but nothing was too big or too heavy! Trips continued of course with John Whitney leading a beach trip to South Australia and the first Easter trip to Cadell on the Murray in South Australia – where Frank & Val McGurgan had taken up residence. Penelope the goat was a great source of amusement, riding on vehicle bonnets – and munching on the gladioli Frank had given to each camper. A four week long trip to Central Australia, led by Adrian and Pauline Ryan, left in the May
school holidays with the Ryan, Wilson, Manicolo, Daly, Pearson, Mills, Duff and Harris families in 8 vehicles having a great and memorable holiday experience. June saw two more clean ups before the onset of winter, firstly at the Lower Glenelg National Park on the South Australian border west of Portland, where the items removed included a Bedford bus, which had been used by ‘squatters’ since 1966. Once it was dragged out of the bush and the sand it needed to be moved 2km to a main road where it was accessible for ultimate disposal. Closer to home, Kinglake National Park – once again car bodies a big problem. Our efforts were very much appreciated by the Government bodies involved. And so it was to July again and the 2nd AGM. By now the Club boasted 260 memberships and a healthy bank balance. To celebrate the end of the second year a dinner dance was again held at the Victorian Art Centre “Gallery” Restaurant and enjoyed by everyone – especially Neil Sleep in his beautiful caftan! The annual election for 1975/76 saw the following installed as Committee for the coming year: President Graeme Wilson Vice President John Carmody Secretary Julie Lord TreasurerCheryl Manicolo Trip Convenor Gary Fullerton TechnicalJim Cooke Social Secretary Lorraine Fullerton Magazine Editor Laurie Davies Membership John Atkins Public Relations Adrian Ryan
Two new positions – those of Membership Officer and Public Relations Officer – had been added to share the workload. The second half of 1975 included trips to Sovereign Hill, Apollo Bay, Rubicon, the Grampians and Dargo. A vehicle driving day at Frank Tippett’s quarry at Keilor – wet and slippery with 300 people attending and Neville Lindsay’s Toyota showing off the new Toyota LandCruiser Campervan. A map reading course was held and a film night to The Towering Inferno. And of course the annual Christmas BBQ and visit from Santa for the kids was held at Yarra Glen. The Australia Day weekend in January 1976 was especially important – our Club hosted the first National Conference of Toyota Clubs at Glenn College, La Trobe University. Attendees came from every State and as a ‘live-in’ conference it was a highly successful weekend with many major decisions being reached. Again this brings home the reality that our Club was of the forefront of many initiatives in those early days – including the creation of the VAFWDC. In fact the weekend after the conference, Graeme and Alex Caughey flew to Canberra as TLC delegates to a three day “Off Road Symposium” held at the Australian National University. Colin Dunn also attended as the representative of the VAFWDCs. Conservation issues and indeed the future of four-wheel driving were very much under threat at that time. Easter again saw several trips over the extended break with many returning to the McGurgan property on the Murray River at Cadell for a second magical trip and others to North Eastern Victoria. An extended trip was held in May to the Flinders Ranges and socially a film night was organized to see “Picnic at Hanging Rock” – and we were all enthralled by this Australian masterpiece set in our own backyard. A trip to Wyperfeld National Park in far north western Victoria in June saw a large group of members assist the Rangers over the long weekend break pulling up the dreaded “horehound” – thanks to the Chinese miners – and tackling the huge rabbit population – thanks to the Austin family. July saw the third AGM of the Club – now up to membership number 408. After 3 years at the helm, and in accordance with the Constitution, Graeme stepped down as President. The annual Dinner Dance was this July held at La Trobe University and was a well attended function. The Committee for 1976/77 was elected as follows: President John Carmody Vice President Neil Sleep Secretary Barbara Wilson TreasurerCheryl Manicolo Trip Convenor Mark de Clifford Magazine Editor John Daly Social Secretary Julie Jennison Public Relations John Gellibrand Membership Lucille Sleep Education Officer Graeme Wilson

Having completed my driver awareness course in early June, it had taken me a while to get myself organized to participate on my first Club trip. A change of family plans and my folks being able to look after the kids for the day allowed me to make contact with our trip leader, Matthew, and express my interest in his trip around the Brisbane Ranges. It was advertised as an easy trip and as Matt explained, this was his first trip as a trip leader and would be more of a social trip, rather than anything to get the car dirty. I was happy with that, and completed the Trip Member Information form and sent it on to Matt. It turns out I actually forwarded him the Emergency Contact form instead. A lesson learnt for the new members. Jane and I were the last to arrive at the Anakie Store at 9:40 am. After some introductions and a quick briefing, we were off up the road towards Mt Wallace. Onto the dirt road, we travelled in convoy and it was surprising to see that in early September, there was plenty of dust left by the convoy of only 10 vehicles. Over the radio was talk of the various flora and fauna that we drove past. The wildflowers were out and I think it was Judith calling out most of the types of flowers that we could see. For Jane and me, it was great to see and visit somewhere new. We stopped at a place within the Brisbane Ranges National Park, which is well known for rock climbing and abseiling – Staughton Vale Cliff Face. Whilst the walk to the cliff
top was optional, the morning tea after the walk was mandatory. From morning smoko our lunch spot was only a 20 minute drive away down some tight switchbacks. Most of which could be managed in 2WD but to help with track preservation and prevent wheel spin it made sense to be in 4WD. Instead of tackling the walk before morning tea, Matt McPhee had kindly detoured to reserve a spot at Stoney Creek picnic area for lunch. It was a beautiful setting, lending itself meeting other members and allowed Jane and I the opportunity to meet likeminded people of the Club and listen to their stories, both four-wheeling related and not. Things were so relaxed that rather than get back into the car, I could have had a nap under a tree in the sun, but there was more
exploring to be done. After a short drive, we took a quick stop at the United Albion mine site, an abandoned goldmine, which according to the plaque was some 250 feet deep. Some amazing history and without our trip leader, it would be something I would have otherwise driven past. Stieglitz is a town well known for its history of gold mining, but for us, it will be known as the place where we ended our easy day on our first Club trip. Thanks to Matt and Sara for putting on the day and for everyone who attended to support it. For a couple of new members, was great to meet everyone and develop an appreciation of how the Club and its trips work. We are looking forward to our next trip. Dan & Jane Crook (2621)

DRIVER AWARENESS WEEKEND - JUNE 2013
ell it was finally our turn to do our driver training. From the time we were told about the weekend, we wondered what we were in for as our previous four-wheel driving was limited. We decided to tow our caravan to Yarck and on arrival late Friday afternoon we were greeted at the Hilton by John & Jeff who proceeded to point us out to a nice level site where we then set up camp. We proceeded over to the Hilton to meet the other participants (10 in total) and were welcomed by a lovely fire. We cooked our meal and as it was an early start set off to bed early. We awoke Saturday to perfect sunshine. To begin Paul put three different Land Cruisers up on the ramp to show us mechanical maintenance and the different types of suspensions. This was followed by John, Jeff and Simon giving us a demonstration of recovery with a hand winch and then the winch mounted on the vehicle. We all participated in this activity, the main point being the importance of safety to you and others in the vicinity. After morning tea it was time to drive down to Whoopsy-Do in convoy to learn the stall starts on the hilly track. The confidence we gained from the patient instructors John, Jeff and Simon becoming invaluable. We left Whoopsy-Do to return to the Hilton for lunch with everybody competent with that task. The most daunting task was waiting as we drove down a very steep track with rocks and washouts. With the patience and perseverance and instruction of our instructors, we all managed the task at hand. On the way back to the Hilton we proceeded through the bog hole and completed the mogul track near the bus stop. Back at the Hilton we were informed by John that we were doing a night drive. As the sun set we were led by Simon in convoy out on to the main road, which led us on to another road ending up at the gate at the highest point of the TLCCV dinner

infrastructure on the property. Our instructors in John Jeff, Paul and Simon were outstanding and very patient in giving us great confidence. Thank you for a very great weekend. Ray Colban and Di Barry (2638)
and a few drinks. A very full and informative day. Sunday morning we again awoke to sunshine and proceeded to the sand pit to firstly bog our vehicle and then proceed to recover each vehicle with the snatch strap. It was interesting to see the difference of each vehicle’s suspension. We ended the session by driving around the property’s tracks giving us the opportunity to practice the driver skills we had learnt over the weekend. A very rewarding weekend was had by all. The participants worked well together in a very friendly manner feeling much more competent by the end of the course. Many thanks to the previous members who had the foresight to acquire and manage the Overland Cruisering 23

This restaurant occupies two shop fronts and is very well patronized on busy Nicholson Street in Carlton North. By the time our group were all seated at the big table in front of a life-size, oval-framed picture of Luciano Pavarotti with Tony and his wife, all tables in the restaurant were occupied. The sound of many voices chatting and laughing away created a great atmosphere and one could still have a conversation with those around you without having to strain to make oneself heard. Menus were handed round and orders taken by Spresa then the cameras came out to record the smiling faces of our group. The next three hours were spent catching up with one another on a range of interesting topics. By now everyone was tucking away into their dinners except for Colin, Chris and Jan who thought they would get their meals before everybody else as they
had ordered pizzas. Some of the group had already finished their meal by the time the pizzas arrived! Oh well, the best laid plans don’t always work out. We all had a good time enjoying each other’s company over good, hearty Italian fare. Our group would have lingered longer but as 11 o’clock drew near, we discovered we were the only patrons left and time to go our separate ways home. Tony and Spresa would have breathed a sigh of relief when we finally left the building so they could clear our table and go home too. 20th – 22nd September, 2013 Attendees: Peter Hepworth and his mate Rob Swebbs with his excavator; Ian & Ellen McCartney; Wayne Eames; Dulcie Watts; Jan Chivers and Ken Hildebrand; Ted Gray; Neil Chalmers; John & Wendy Wilson; Garry Cooper; Brian Stewart; Peter Burchall; Andrew Bock; Trajco Vilarov; Colin Low; Angela DiLallo; Andrew McWalters; Bill Motschall; Greg & Carol Edmunds; Eamon King; Graham Dart. It rained all week and we thought no one will come to Yarck. How wrong was that thought? We had a great weekend and the weather was mild and sunny – just ‘delicious.’ Rob Swebbs with his excavator worked very hard all weekend and the caravan park has been re-shaped, the dam crossing has been cleared of scrub, stumps have been removed from the main camping area. All of this work created a lot of scrub to be burnt off and there were three fires in total in different areas of the property. I think the best fire was the one in the Batchelor’s Pad (which was taken over by the women). They burnt off in style with a table and chairs set up in a large cleared area under the trees and a fire burning beautifully with a tall column of smoke making its way to the sky. The setting was delightful. Good on ya girls! Many other jobs were done – some sanding and painting on the verandah posts at the hut, water was pumped, more firewood put in the tanks, etc. A big happy hour on Saturday night and then the fireplace was covered with pots and pans cooking up gourmet meals. Dinner done, there was red wine and lots of laughter in between the stories. It is great to see people unwind, relax and enjoy life. Jan Chivers and Ken Hildebrand (603) Other items that were tackled: check solar system and replace globes, modify the mesh to the fireplace flue, position fire extinguisher boxes in the camping area and remove, cut and stack dangerous trees. Preparation for hole drilling at bush hut site next month. A special thanks to Rob Swebbs for the great work he was able to get through with

his machine. Thanks to all who helped make it a great weekend. Brian Stewart (340) Yarck Management Coordinator Work completed by Rob Swebbs with his excavator over the weekend. Starting at the caravan park Friday and completed works there Saturday. We improved several sites (increasing length, width and level) together with adding in 4 new sites, whilst clearing some ti-tree fire hazards as well. He removed the stumps from the cut trees and improved access at both entry / exit areas. At the water crossing area he removed as much ti-tree as possible within the reach of the excavator. Rob then leveled and placed steps into the viewing area. He added to the dam embankment and leveled the track. Next he moved to the Hilton campground where he dug out several tree stumps from trees that were cut down on
Saturday by others. He then back-filled and improved a couple of other sites as well. All this work was carried out from Friday to Sunday, and sincere thanks has been expressed to Rob for his excellent work. Peter Hepworth (2454)

ARB RECOVERY POINTS ARB recovery points are now available for the Mazda BT50/Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, Nissan GU Patrol and Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series, with more models in the pipeline. A few years ago, ARB launched an exhaustive engineering program in order to set a new industry benchmark for how recovery points are designed, tested and selected by 4WDers in Australia. Instigated by countless customer enquiries and a lack of industry standards regarding rated tow points, ARB’s recovery point range seeks to address issues surrounding generic tow points and their unsuitability for a range of recovery situations. These issues include questionable and untested mounting locations, confusion regarding the selection of rated shackles and straps, and the inability of generic tow points to safely handle stresses generated by an angled pull during vehicle recovery. Of critical importance in the design stage was the commitment to finding an optimal mounting location for the recovery point on each vehicle. Generic tow points, while rated to 10,000lbs or similar, are not vehicle specific and so mounting them is often left in the hands of the purchaser, who is unable to ascertain whether the surface they have mounted the tow point to can handle the load exerted during a recovery or whether air bag deployment is affected. Each ARB recovery point has been built from the ground up and underwent considerable research and design involving actual vehicle chassis samples and CAD data relating to critical front sections of the vehicle. Dozens of designs were explored, with the more promising models built into prototypes and tested on the actual vehicle chassis using ARB’s various load and
destructive testing equipment. Some vehicle models demanded very complex mounting systems to ensure fitment did not affect air bag deployment in the event of an accident. But with months of design and testing dedicated to each individual recovery point, ARB’s engineers have ensured that the crush pulse of the vehicle remains unaffected, whilst also ensuring the recovery points are fitted in the optimal location to handle the stresses experienced during vehicle recovery. ARB’s engineers also focussed considerable attention on the development of a ‘recovery train’, in which they tested and verified what rated strap and bow shackle size is compatible with the recovery point. This has not only simplified the use of recovery points out on the track, it has increased customer safety and reduced the likelihood of vehicle damage through misuse or incorrect selection of associated recovery point equipment. In doing so, the engineers were able to create a standard
across all of the recovery points, with the recommended rated bow shackle for all ARB recovery points being 4.75t, paired with an 8000kg rated snatch strap. Another important design requirement was the ability of these points to be rated in an angled direction of pull, and this has been achieved for angles up to the maximum turn angle of the front wheels of the vehicle. With this requirement came questions of how the snatch strap is attached to the point, and for this reason ARB recovery points have a long slot that allows the bow of the shackle to be fed through and the strap then attached via the pin instead of the bow. This allows the shackle to pivot within the recovery points to avoid side loads on the pin. Coming with a two year warranty, ARB’s recovery point range is available from ARB stores and stockists across the country. For further information, contact your nearest stockist or visit www.arb.com.au.

AUNTY MADGE MKII Greetings campers. It’s been a long time since I chatted to you all. All the trips I’ve been on recently have ended each night with a tasty Pub meal (no cooking or washing up – that’s trip heaven to me) so even I couldn’t submit a recipe to our Cook Up segment. BUT I’m delighted to say Ellen McCartney has kindly given us her recipe for Honey Nut Bars, which a number of us sampled up at Yarck a while back. It’s delicious and rather moreish!
1. Stir honey and Tahina in a saucepan over low-medium heat until the mixture boils. 2. Mix through the nut/seed mix 3. Press mixture into a greased/baking paper-lined 18x28cm slice pan. 4. Bake in a 160c preheated oven/camp oven for 12-15 minutes. Remember campers, if you have any great cook-ups whilst on your trips, take a PHOTO and email it with the recipe to cookup@tlccv.com.au Happy camping all, Aunty Madge MkII
