U P D AT E

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

i all. It is with much sadness that I have to report the passing of Peter Dwyer on Sunday 7th September, 2014. Peter was an extremely well known member of not only TLCCV, but other fourwheel drive clubs including his passion and involvement with the Moorabbin Aero Club. Many of you will remember how Peter always put his hand up when it came to being a DJ and providing all the necessary equipment that went with the job. He was always so generous in providing CBs, UHFs, and all types of radio equipment for the benefit of the club, and offering specials as well. He loved to be involved with people and during his role as President, could not sit still during the meetings, but loved to wander around the hall talking to everyone. To Marion and his family, on behalf of the TLCCV, we wish to extend our deepest sympathy from the Toyota Land Cruiser Club of Victoria. For those of you that attended the last meeting, you would have noticed my absence, which was unfortunately due to illness. I would like to extend a big thank you to Vice President, Adriano who I’ve been told did a great job. Well done, Adriano. At the last committee meeting there was a lot of discussion about the mid-year budget review. Clearly there are challenges for the club moving forward. One of the areas of particular challenge is the extensive ongoing cost of our club magazine, even after advertising revenue is considered. In this day and age of social media, web sites and email the speed of communication in many cases means that a printed magazine is often out of date by the time we receive it. In saying that, our club has had a great magazine and Sandra and Brian do a huge job keeping it that way. Russell and Lesley have been very helpful by keeping the overall cost down to an absolute minimum, and the committee thank them for this. The real issue though is that even after advertising revenue is considered the magazine costs each member over $60 per membership. The reality is that this sort of cost is just not sustainable, especially when we all agree that the future is all

H

about electronic media. The committee are crystal clear that we need a magazine without question, but in what format. Repeatedly many members have indicated their happiness in receiving the magazine in an electronic format. The committee has finally seen it necessary to use club funds better by spending money on redeveloping our web site and other forms of media. Sure, we will need to get a good software viewer so that the magazine can easily be read on line. Moving forward there are a lot of positives aside from the financial stats. Electronic media is faster, we are likely to be able to reach far more people thereby providing our sponsors with a greater exposure, and of course there is the issue of more up to date news. The committee really has agonized over this situation, which has been the subject of debate for the last 3-4 years. Financial constraints and the pace of modern equipment have made it necessary to make the leap forward and embrace new technology more fully. The savings made will allow the club to operate in a more efficient and timely manner. With the warmer weather we should all be able to get out and about and explore the bush a little more. Take care as usual, and don't forget that seasonal road closures are in force until Melbourne Cup weekend in November. Yarck Management has got their monster working bee coming up, but don't forget that there is also a working bee every month and Yarck Management are always looking for more people to help out. Yarck belongs to us all and it is essential that we support the work done up there. It is a great time to catch up with fellow members and an excuse to get away - the more the better. There are still some positions where we are looking for people e.g. a Social Co-ordinator. If you want more information please speak to any of the committee who can steer you in the right direction. In the meantime enjoy the warmer weather and hope to see you soon. Ian Ross (1409) PRESIDENT

V ALE Peter Dwyer Passed away Sunday 7th September, 2014 (Father’s Day) Peter was a well known and highly respected member of TLCCV His generosity in giving, advising and supporting all who knew him was endless A man who loved the bush, a good fire, and being with his friends. R.I.P Peter

NEWS

F R O M I PT O Y O T A

SPECIAL EDITION PRADO FOR AUSTRALIA Toyota's LandCruiser Prado is showing the world a clean pair of heels - building on its market-leading sales success with a special-edition model that features an entirely new design at the rear. For the first time in its 18-year history in Australia, local motorists can now purchase a Prado with the spare tyre located out of sight under the vehicle rather than fitted to the rear door. The cleaner look for the new Prado Altitude also incorporates a glass hatch in the tailgate that allows easy access to the cargo area without opening the door. Prado's newest special variant is priced at $68,520* and includes at least $10,000 of additional features for just $4,800 more than the automatic GXL diesel model on which it is based. Toyota Australia's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said, "In giving Prado a 'clean pair of heels' by moving the spare wheel and tyre, we've made the tailgate lighter and therefore easier to open especially when the vehicle is parked facing down a hill," Mr Cramb said. "Prado Altitude retains an 87-litre fuel tank which offers a driving range of more than 1,000km, giving customers a clear choice as the relocated spare replaces a second, smaller fuel tank." Mr Cramb said Toyota respected Prado's winning formula, but it was important to refresh the range in such a dynamic market with vehicles such as the Altitude. A feature of the Prado SE is its leatheraccented seats, which are trimmed with contrasting grey seat inserts and stitching on the bolsters and headrests. Other equipment sourced from the premium VX and luxury Kakadu grades includes a tilt-and-slide moonroof, Blu-Ray rear entertainment system with three wireless headphones and remote control, electrochromatic rear-view mirror, power front

seats and rain-sensing wipers. The Prado Altitude upgrade also incorporates the 14-speaker JBL audio system from the more-expensive Prado models, along with DAB+ digital radio^, a seveninch display screen, and satellite navigation with Suna^^ live traffic alerts. It gains the full suite of Toyota Link# apps: Destination Download, Local Search and Fuel Finder with "navigate to" function, plus the Toyota Help feature and the user-paid Destination Assist. Chrome side mouldings, door handles and air-conditioning surrounds also distinguish the Prado Altitude, along with carbon fibrelook details on the dash panel and gearshift surround. The model is set off with an Altitude badge and four premium paints: Eclipse Black which is not offered on any other Prado, Crystal Pearl from VX and Kakadu, Silver Pearl and Graphite. Prado Altitude is powered by Toyota's torquey 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, which is mated to a five-speed

automatic transmission with gated shift. It retains GXL features including reversing camera, rear parking sensors, three-zone climate-controlled air-conditioning, audio controls on the steering wheel, smart entry and start and cruise control. There are seven airbags, vehicle stability and traction control, anti-skid brakes, hill-start assist control and downhill assist control. Prado Altitude is covered by Toyota Service Advantage capped-price servicing at $210 per service.

ndaunted by many closed tracks and the threat of wet weather, our trip leader promised a relaxing and interesting weekend in the Gunbower Island area. From Moama we crossed the river back into Victoria and were soon ambling along River Road beside the Murray. Braund Bend provided Murray views and information about the parks along the river. Finding an open track to Torrumbarry Weir was a challenge so we resorted to the Murray-Valley Highway for fast access to National Channel Road and the weir where we inspected the lock and the impressive interpretative centre. Our native flora experts, Monica and Phil identified a range of colorful species in the weir’s gardens. Marcel and Marianne arrived and we headed for Cohuna via Gunbower, the childhood home of our trip leader. We turned off the highway to reminisce with Ian about his childhood and the town’s former tobacco and dairy days. A relaxed lunch at Cohuna provided an opportunity for social chat, vehicle set up “show and tell” and tyre attention. With tyres reinflated (perhaps prematurely), we bumped along Dickson’s Road (one of few tracks open in the area), past bird watching hides in the tall rushes and picturesque reflections in the Gunbower Creek.

We passed mountains of cut red gum firewood – a pyromaniac’s delight, noted Marcel. Back on River Road and into Perricoota State Forest, convoy procedures were essential as vehicles fore and aft disappeared in the dust and the stretching distance between vehicles reduced radio contact. Finally, the convoy rounded up beside a brilliant yellow rape seed field before heading back to our Moama base. Passing a variety of animal and birdlife – emu, cranes, pelicans, water hens, galahs, alpacas, goats, cows and sheep – we arrived back at base at 4:30pm. Later we enjoyed a casual barbeque, sharing food, tales and information about camper trailers. Sunday morning we departed in sunshine’, and on schedule, headed for Barmah National Park. We reached the Murray via Webb Road for our first photo stop then, looking for more excitement, we opted to take the rougher of the available tracks. Ignoring the “Road Closed” sign, we proceeded on the Old Barmah Road, but impassable mud necessitated a U-turn. With Monica’s assistance, Ian soon had us exploring the Murray’s forested flats along Pump Road. Enjoying the trek through the forest, we decided to abandon the attempt

to reach Barmah Forest. We had morning tea beside a tranquil billabong made more picturesque by the sun dappled gums reflecting on the water. Only the screech of cockatoos shattered the tranquility. Along the riverside wooded flats, Monica and Marianne identified some pretty camping spots. Finally, a chance to tackle some mud holes! Ian gave us the OK to proceed and soon we were all through the watery bog emerging with vehicles suitably adorned with mud – a fitting end to our weekend exploring the dust and mud and along the Murray. Thanks to our trip leader.

riday 1st August: Simon, James and I met in Yea early Friday morning on the way to conduct a recce on Mt Skene. With so many vehicles, we felt it prudent to check the snow conditions, especially given the weather forecast. After a quick chat and drive, we soon ended up on the Licola-Jamieson Road behind Jamieson where we quickly found lots of snow from 700m and heavy snow showers as well. Being a Friday, we almost had the place to ourselves, only seeing a single vehicle for the rest of the day. As the snow got deeper heading to Mt Skene, we started having a few “issues” where I managed to get stuck, James got stuck trying to

recover me and Simon got to sit back and watch the two of us winch/snatch ourselves out of trouble in heavy snow showers while he enjoyed the heater in the 80. From there we all took turns in the lead trying to get as far as possible, then once we had our fill/could not go any further, let another try. Lots of recovering, lots of fun and the best snow conditions in many years. Once we reached untouched powder snow it became a test of power and traction. After a few hours of fun and games the decision was made to turn around about 1km from the summit. Simon entertained us by getting himself stuck twice within 10 minutes trying to turn around, and I enjoyed watching from my

heated vehicle as he ran his winch cable out in heavy snow showers to my vehicle to give him something to winch off.

Snow continued to fall down to 700 metres on the way back, and a couple of quick 4WD tracks were explored in case we wanted another option tomorrow after playing in the snow. The snow conditions were perfect and planning for a mild week short notice assault next year when conditions are hopefully as good are already being planned. With most Club members staying at the Jamieson Pub for the weekend, once we got back there were a few drinks/laughs, but mostly an early night as a quick start was planned for Saturday morning. Adam Takacs (2450) Saturday 2nd August: After a quick breakfast put on by the Pub, an early briefing was conducted outside and 19 eager vehicles and participants were ready to head off. There were two groups, and I managed to talk Simon into sneaking off first, then he headed off 5 minutes later with his group. The travel up to the snow line went smoothly, and snow was spotted at a similar elevation to yesterday. We all made good progress to the lookout where the two groups once again rejoined and the decision was made for me to take those in my group who wanted to head further up the mountain and see how far we could get. Everyone else stayed at the lookout where there was a really good cover of snow to play with toboggans, build snow men, have snow fights, etc.

20 Overland Cruisering

After leaving the lookout my group got to encounter deep snow quickly, where while challenging it was deemed to be great fun. As the elevation and track started to climb it got more interesting, and soon enough we were hearing calls on the UHF “for another go”, or “can you get the snatch strap, just hold on for a minute,” etc. Garry and Sara may have taken the prize for most recoveries, but Steve put in a valiant effort and wasn’t far behind. James obviously felt left out, so got stuck as well, and with three vehicles stuck side-by-side, I had to turn around and break out the winch from my spot a few hundred metres further up the track. Max tracks, winches and snap straps were all put to use, and after two or so hours of fun from leaving the lookout, it was time to head back and let Simon’s group have a go. We all enjoyed relaxing in the snow after the morning’s fun, and with blazing sunshine and no wind, conditions were great. Once Simon returned, we all headed back to the Pub for the serious part of the day. Sunday 3rd August: After a fantastic Saturday had by all, it just about had everything – sun shining, light winds, snowing, snow fights, tobogganing, building snow men and snow driving, we almost did everything except for reaching the top of Mt Skene. When we arrived back at the hotel, there was a plan brewing to try and reach the peak of Mt Skene on the Sunday. (After some deliberation on Saturday evening, Simon and I decided to re-organise the two convoys where one group led by me would head to Mt Skene again, and hopefully make it to Licola and home, while the other group went up to Mt Terrible). Adam Takacs Sunday six cars headed off at 8:00am sharp to beat the mountain traffic. We made good time to reach the Mt Skene lookout area. We stopped for a short break then continued on. We had only one holdup. It’s really hard for me to say who it was GUNTHER SCHEFFEL. Gunther slid off the track and had to be snatched out of his predicament – he was the only one. After finally reaching the peak we enjoyed a hot

4 Overland Cruisering

cuppa in almost perfect snow conditions. The descent down the mountain on the other side had everything the ascent had including – you guessed it – GUNTHER SCHEFFEL – got stuck again, this time a

little different; it was a small log instead of a little bit of snow that got him. Again, after this time winching him out of his second predicament, we finally continued down the mountain. The snow continued to amaze. The scenery was absolutely beautiful and we arrived in Licola for lunch around midday. The whole weekend was absolutely terrific and I suggest to all you snow lovers to get on board for next year’s trip.

And now for the Hook Award. I would like to nominate Adam for heading home (in his very organized way) leaving his wallet and jacket on the picnic table. Not good Adam! Seriously, what a great weekend had by all, and we would like to thank Adam and Simon for putting such a great trip together. Thanks guys. Wayne & Sue Jinks

DRIVER TRAINING Our Driver Awareness weekend 30th & 31st August, 2014 By Adi Crawford n a misty Saturday morning in the Australian bush, we began our four wheel driving challenge. The sun rose on this last weekend of Winter, warming up the many and varied tracks at the Yarck property. Initially we drove up and down short tracks, getting to know the feel of the vehicle and stopping on slopes. From there we moved on to a greater challenge of driving down the ruts and up the high ground over a longer distance. Finally the morning included a steeper drive up and over washouts. This is where you have moments of not seeing the track in front, as the vehicle bonnet leans towards the sky. As I travelled back down, I appreciated what Simon said: “The ruts are your friend.” After lunch at the Yarck Hilton, we made waves during our water crossing. Our cars experienced both a brief dip and a long swim through muddy waters. We then dried our cars while having a guided tour of

O

A U G U S T AI P WARENESS WEEKEND the property. The instructors exited our cars and left us to negotiate the terrain with their guidance from the helm and tail of the vehicle convoy. This journey gave us experience at watching vehicle placement in front of us, waiting for the driver behind to copy our indicators and using the walkietalkies to let the whole convoy know what track feature we had just concurred. By mid-afternoon we had traversed over much of the property, but there was still night four wheel driving to experience. It was an opportunity to use the lights our cars were kitted with and further appreciate our adventure. By 7:00pm we were happy to be back at base enjoying gazing into a campfire as we debriefed about our day. Rising to a clear Sunday morning, we finished breakfast and discussed our theory questions. We learnt about the Club tours and forms of communication available to contact home when travelling in the Outback. As much as we all had plans to drive far from home enjoying our vast continent, there might arise times when we would like to call home or be told of a significant event back in our home town.

We then drove through sand using our recovery gear to rescue and be rescued. This was a valuable opportunity applying safety knowledge learnt at the recent theory night. The weekend was much enjoyed by our primary school children. They loved splashing in muddy puddles, seeing their car appear like a boat through the water and observing the variety of angles wheels leaned when driven through sand. Just before lunch we further explored the property with our improved skills. For those who have not driven a 4WD off road before, this is a great weekend to become acquainted with your vehicle’s potential. For those experienced High Country drivers, this is a refreshing weekend retreat brushing up on safety and touring in a beautiful bush setting. Congratulations to all the drivers, Lynda & Peter Collins, Phil & Marleen Susman and Glen & Adi Crawford. Much appreciation to the instructors, John and Simon together with the trainee instructors, Matt, Tony, Ian and Geoff, for their time.
