CAPTAIN’s report I am pleased to report that at the annual ‘River Runs Through It’ competition we managed to wrestle the trophy back from Zwartkop who have won it for the last couple of years. The foursomes on Saturday were almost a clean sweep from our side which was extremely gratifying to see. I guess that the foursome knockouts that we ran had something to do with it. Despite some organisational issues the camaraderie amongst the clubs was fantastic and bodes well for the future of the event provided that all the clubs commit to the event. Once again, well done to all the players for their participation and efforts. We are well into the annual league season and I am happy to report that Senior and Mid Amateurs scratch league sides are progressing very well in their pools. Here’s holding thumbs for them! Elsewhere, the handicap league lost in the quarter finals to Waterkloof.
We have recently re-introduced the “adopt a green” initiative to sort out any pitch marks that have not been repaired and I must say that there is an amazing difference. Thank you to all for your efforts. Allied to this, I was approached during the month by Pieter Kruger who wanted to ‘adopt’ the 18th fairway and utilise his gardener to fill divots. I must applaud this initiative and call on anyone else willing to do so to do the same on other fairways. Failing this, please can we all ensure we have enough sand with us and repair divots that have not been filled? This will leave us in a superb position for when the summer rains come again. The next Captains Challenge sponsored by Hokaai will be on 30 August in the afternoon. This will be the final afternoon field as it will revert to the morning field in September. Please pop in and support Hokaai and don’t forget that they do deliveries into the Estate.

CAPTAIN’s report
I would like to start off by thanking all the league players for their time and effort they put in to play league. Since my last report our Saturday Ladies League Team were on their way on 21 June to play the last game vs Irene 2 at Akasia and unfortunately, we lost 1-2. Herewith the results of our Mixed League Team: 22 June CCC vs Woodhill at Waterkloof (Lost) 29 June CCC vs PGC1 at Akasia (Half) 20 July CCC vs PCC at Services (1.5 vs 2.5) 27 July CCC vs Silver Lakes at PGC (3-1) What a privilege it was to be awarded with my Lady Captain badge at the Awards Dinner on 25 June. This prestigious annual event saw most of the club’s past captains, lady captains and past presidents in attendance and the club’s top golfers and committee members are awarded for their efforts. Well done to all those receiving awards and recognition.

In the meantime, during July CCC played a short version of ‘A River Runs Through It’ which is an annual tri-club tournament involving Irene Country Club, Centurion and Zwartkop Country Club. Centurion’s members won most of their games and took home the trophy. Well done to all who participated. A special thanks to Jannes and Hamish for the organisation of this event. We have had a few cold and frosty mornings during the past month and I’m sure everyone is looking forward to the warmer weather. From 1September our Early Bird ladies tournament will move back to our usual morning time slot on a Thursday. On 7 August Centurion CC will be hosting the GNGU Senior Ladies Tournament and we’re expecting a good turnout with the brave senior ladies taking on the chilly morning conditions. By the time this goes to print, our National Women’s Charity Golf day would have taken place on 9 August. This year we’ve reintroduced the annual potjiekos competition in an attempt to encourage all our home owners to get involved in this funfilled day. Our nominated charity for all funds raised goes to Dynamic Women for Children - an informal village, Plot 177 Kameeldrift and Plot 101 Kameelfontein. We would like to thank everyone in advance that got involved with sponsoring and bringing old clothes, blankets, food, etc. Until next month, happy golfing to you all.

Champions of the World! Assupoltuks show huge character to win Red Bull Campus Cricket World finals in London! Congratulations must go to Head Coach Pierre de Bruyn Local resident, Director of Cricket and head coach of AssupolTuks, Pierre de Bruyn, left SA on 17 July 2014 with one goal in mind - to return back with the Redbull T20 Campus Cricket World Cup. AssupolTuks qualified to represent South Africa after beating Maties 3-0 in a Regional Redbull T20 series earlier in April this year. On Saturday evening, 26 July 2014 de Bruyn’s AssupolTuks players lifted the Redbull T20 Campus Cricket World Cup at The Oval in London after beating Jamaica University of West Indies. “We planned for everything and we proved ourselves to everyone. I’m proud of the success and the culture of this team, and nobody can take that away from this side,” coach Pierre de Bruyn said after the final. Two players who were an integral part of the de Bruyn’s victorious team are also residents, namely Ruben Claassen and Aiden Markram. Claassen is a unique off spin bowler, standing 2m tall his bounce, spin and accuracy plays havoc with the batsmen. Although Markram does bowl a bit of off spin his strength is in his batting where he opens. During the last year 170 universities from 8 countries all tried to qualify regionally so as to represent their country. The following teams succeeded - Leeds Bradford MCC (UK), University of New South Wales (Australia), University of Liberal Arts (Bangladesh), Rizvi College (India), Karachi University (Pakistan), AssupolTuks (South Africa), International College of Business and Technology (Sri Lanka) and Jamaica (West Indies). The tournament was hosted this year in the UK during the week of 21 to 26 July. The pool games were played at 2 venues, namely Wormsley and Aston Rowton Cricket grounds with the semi-finals and final being played at The Oval.

Markram 33 runs & 2-0-12-1 Claassen and Markram also excelled in the tournament statistics. Claassen finished the tournament as the second leading wicket taker in 5 matches behind SA U19 World Cup bowler Corbin Bosch who took 12 wickets. Claassen bowled 20 overs in total, had 89 runs conceded and took 9 wickets. Markram ended second highest runs scorer behind fellow team mate and Titans player Theunis de Bruyn who was the leading run scorer (209 runs). Markram in 5 games scored 174 runs at an average of 34. Markram also had bowling figures for the 5 matches bowling 12 overs, had 50 runs conceded and took 4 wickets. Well done to Pierre, Ruben and Aiden - you can be very proud. Not often one can say that a cricket player in Markram has won 2 World Cups in one year (U19 and Redbull T20)… keep the Tuks and Centurion flag flying high gents and good luck for the upcoming season.

Bleshoenders cheque handover in support of the club’s caddies Once a year the Centurion Country Club’s Bleshoenders group hosts a fundraising golf day on the public holiday, 1 May. This event would not be possible if it was not for the continued unselfish support from Gerhard Coetser and the Lyttelton Superspar. Gerhard sponsors all the great prizes of this popular golf day and the funds that are raised are then allocated to an elected charity or project that the Bleshoenders chooses. This year the Bleshoenders elected to support the club’s local caddies as they all suffered server loss of income earlier in the year when the golf course was damaged by the continued floods. Each of our 30 permanent caddies received an envelope handed over by Jan Schutte from the Bleshoenders and Gustav representing the Lyttelton Superspar. A massive “Thank you” must go out to Gerhard Coetser and Gustav and all the guys from the Lyttelton Superspar. Your continued support is tremendously appreciated.
