Destination Irene

WELCOME TO OUR

little Village Situated in the heart of Gauteng (South Africa’s Economic Captital) lies the historical Village of Irene. Well known for its long, winding, oak-lined country lanes here you will find peace and tranquillity – which will soon help you realise why Destination Irene is my favourite place to be.

Irene Country Lodge offers five star luxury accommodation with delectable cuisine from its Meadow Green Restaurant, overlooking a large tranquil dam. And whether you visit for business or leisure, Camdeboo Spa allows you the time to put your hooves up and relax.

Apart from the beautiful settings and outstanding service, Bill (my husband) and I have been enjoying all that Destination Irene has to offer since we were calves grazing in the Irene Dairy Farm fields many moons ago.

Of course, a visit to the Irene Farm across the road is a must, with its wonderful Farm Shop selling delicious fresh milk. This is where the locals, often carrying the old fashioned gallon pails, purchase their supplies.

Over the years we have watched our fields grow and develop into the bustling ‘’Farm in the City’’ it is today – changes which have seen us enjoy our surroundings even more. Our own family has grown too and we can assure you (from first-hoof experience) that whether you are looking to host your wedding, treat your family or enjoy some alone time with your better half, Destination Irene has it all.

The two restaurants on the Irene Farm (the Deck Restaurant and The Barn Restaurant) will ensure your taste buds are satisfied whilst enjoying the views of the busy farmyard and dairy stable (built in about 1880 and which is still used today to feed us, the milking herd of the Irene Estate, as it has been every day for over a century).

I’ve put together this Destination Irene magazine to help you explore all that Irene has to offer. Insight into our history, craft markets, a game of golf, wildlife, shopping, kids entertainment – I’ve covered it all in this 2016 issue and I am positive your stay in Irene will be unforgettable. My recommendations include a stay at African Pride Irene Country Lodge which was built and opened in 1998 (just after Bill and I fell in love). African Pride 2

A leisurely stroll around the Irene Farm and African Pride Irene Country Lodge will leave you falling in love with my favourite place. But don’t take my moo-tivation for it! Grab your copy of Destination Irene, arrange your visit and see for yourself… I am so excited to share all the moovelous options Destination Irene has to offer you. Till we meet in the pastures,

The Dairy Cow

AGRICULTURE AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT NATURE CONSERVATION AND RESORTS

Rietvlei

N AT U R E R E S E RV E

HISTORY The Rietvlei Nature Reserve developed out of the Rietvlei water scheme. The reserve is primarily responsible for the conservation of the Rietvlei Dam catchment area and the accumulation and distribution of drinking water. The Rietvlei Dam was built during the Great Depression and completed in 1934. It lies on the Six Mile Spruit and is supported by the Marais Dam which serves as a sludge dam for this larger dam. The dam wall as well as all the other brickwork was done entirely by hand. During those difficult years of the depression, workers were only too happy to work for four shillings per month. All the soil was carted away by mule carts, evidence of which are the numerous horseshoes still found on the koppie across from the yacht club. During a two year programme started in 1988 the dam wall was raised and other improvements were made. The dam has a surface area of 204.13 ha and a storing capacity of 12.024 million m³ when full. An additional supply of water comes from four natural springs within the Reserve, a spring on the adjacent private property and from five boreholes on the dolomite areas in the reserve. Today the Rietvlei Nature Reserve provides 15% of Tshwane's water requirements, estimated at 41 million litres of water per day. City Council of Pretoria acquired the farm (Rietvallei) in 1929. The Rietvlei Nature Reserve is currently owned and operated by the City of Tshwane and situated south east of Tshwane, in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. At 1 525 metres above sea level, the reserve covers a surface area of approximately 4 000 ha or 40 km². The capacity of the reserve to support 1500 to 2000 head of game is well reflected in the extensive herds of locally indigenous antelope (Black Wildebees and Blesbok). Among the historical sights in the Reserve is an old homestead dating back to the early 1900's, a stone rampart built by British forces during the second occupation of Pretoria and three groups of graves on which some of the epitaphs are still legible. Three types of recreational sport are exercised at the Rietvlei Dam including yachting, canoeing and angling. The yacht club is located northwest of the Rietvlei Dam and the angling area is on the northern and western shores. Motorboats are not allowed as the noise disturbs anglers, birds and game and also poses an oil pollution threat to drinking water. Sound nature conservation principles are adhered to in the management of the reserve. Roads in the reserve have a multi-purpose function. They are used by visitors to view game and by management to patrol the reserve, carry out maintenance and prepare firebreaks. The boundary fence patrol road or firebreak is 35 km long. Altogether there are 91 km of roads in the reserve. The veld management program includes an annual burning program which creates a rotational grazing system. It is also necessary to provide additional salt and mineral licks in winter to further ensure the movement of game within the available space of the reserve. The Reserve has a typical Highveld climate, receives an annual average of 724 mm rain during summer and has dry winters with regular frost at night. The local vegetation type can be described as the central variation of Bankenveld, creating open grassland on gently undulating hills. Peat wetlands such as the one in the reserve are rare features in the Southern African landscape. Indigenous trees occur in small groups. In areas where trees do not grow, shale formations are conspicuous. As a result of previous farming activities, which disturbed the soil, several exotic plants occur in the reserve. Invader trees such as the black wattle (Acacia mearnsii) represent a serious threat. These trees, imported from Australia, have no resident natural enemies on the reserve which allows them to spread aggressively.

The most important geological formation is lava, which extends in a broad band from north to south through the reserve. This gives rise to heavy red loam soil suitable for good grazing. Belts of shale and quartzite run on either side of the andesitic lava, which give rise to grey loamy soil. The eastern part of the reserve consists of dolomite covered by shale and chert. Apart from 73 grass species occurring on the reserve there are also more than 500 herb and forb species. In a good year an average of 2 000 kg of grass and 1 300 kg of other herbaceous plant material (dry weight) is produced per hectare.

Concentration Camp ANGLO-BOER WAR: 1899-1902

The siege of Pretoria during the AngloBoer War took place on 5 June 1900 after skirmishes in the present Centurion. Lord Roberts subsequently decided to outmanoeuvre the defending Boers south of Pretoria by following the course of the Hennops River to approach Pretoria from the west. A fort was built on Irene’s highest koppie (now known as Cornwall Hill) by the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. In order to break the spirit and the infrastructure of the Boers, the British implemented a “Scorched Earth Policy”, destroying farms, burning homes and killing or taking livestock. This left thousands of woman and children homeless, who were then driven into more than 31 concentration camps, situated all over the Boer republics of Transvaal and the Orange Free State, as well as in the British colonies of Natal and the Cape. The camps were usually located close to railway lines.

The Irene concentration camp was opened on 2 November 1900. The population of the camp increased rapidly and refugees were housed in tents under extremely poor conditions. On 6 April 1901 a team of woman volunteers from Pretoria started a nursing corps. Henrietta Armstrong kept a camp diary which was published in 1980 by the HSRC. This act of love led to the founding of the SA Womens Federation (SAFV) on 19 October 1904. 26

Although peace was declared on 31 May 1902, the camp was only officially closed during 1903. Piles of rock in the Camp Cemetery indicate the original graves. Only some of these had tombstones. Over the years some of the tombstones were removed and some were lying around. As a consequence most of the graves could not be identified. In 1958, at the request of the Women’s Federation (SAVF), the SA Council on War Graves turned the cemetery into a garden of remembrance. The cemetery is today a national heritage site, under the protection of the SA Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA).

The farm in the city IRENE DAIRY FARM

Irene Dairy Farm is a picturesque gem that nestles between the sprawling cities of Pretoria and Johannesburg. A visit to this old-style, storybook dairy farm is a must. Started in 1895, the van der Byl family (currently in their fifth generation) have run the Irene Dairy Farm since its inception and it has become an iconic landmark in the Gauteng countryside. The Dairy Shop sells certified raw milk (one of the last places to do so) that is produced right here on the Irene Farm. The old gallon buckets of fresh farm milk are a sight unique to Irene. The Shop also has a wide range of cheeses, cakes, rusks and other fresh fare, including a favourite of the locals who frequent the shop is the Irene Dairy’s unique and luxurious thick cream which can’t be found anywhere else and is a must for scones with afternoon tea. Moving through the farmyard, visitors should stop by the Deck or the Barn Restaurants, both of which serve a wide variety of freshly-made

breakfast and lunch options. The Barn Restaurant, which retains so much authentic ambience because it is situated in one of the original farm barns, also serves sumptuous breakfast and lunch buffets every weekend. In addition, the Barn boasts a 100seat conference and function venue, perfect for weddings, year-end functions and staff parties. Functions at the Irene Farm Conference Centre enjoy the same top-class food and service that the Barn Restaurant offers. At the Irene Dairy Farm the little ones can experience a full working dairy farm, from viewing the cows being milked to playing driver on the old red tractor. You can relax and enjoy our well known scones and cream while the little ones play and enjoy one of our jungle gyms. We have a variety of venue options and reasonably priced menu selection from picnic style to tea and cake options. You will certainly find what you are looking for.

A CENTURY OF

history

Irene Village, located in the Centurion district, is steeped in history. Originally known as Doornkloof Farm, Irene Estate was established by Alois Hugo Nellmapius before being bought by Johannes Albertus Van der Byl (better known as ‘’Berti’’) in 1896. Nellmapius had named the farm after his daughter, Irene. Perhaps the farm’s most illustrious occupant was former Prime Minister, General Jan Smuts, the man who crafted the draft of the Covenant of the United Nations. General Jan Christian Smuts bought a third of the original Doornkloof Farm in 1908. Irene was first proclaimed a township in 1902 by Berti and today it is officially part of the municipality of Centurion. Even though the population has grown considerably, neighbours still know one another and find time to chat, all in an extremely relaxed and safe environment. The Irene Golf Course, between Irene Dairy Farm and Smuts House, was originally laid out and started by Bertie Van der Byl and Jan Smuts around 1911. This remains one of the few golf courses in Gauteng where playing golf is still like a walk in the country.

Other landmarks in the area include Irene Primary School which celebrates its 115th Birthday this year and Irene Homes which cares for the mentally handicapped. Places of interest include Smuts House Museum and the Irene Concentration Camp of which both provide an enlightening insight into the history of our lovely village. Today the village is home to African Pride Irene Country Lodge and Irene Dairy Farm, with the land owned by the Van der Byl family who are now in their fifth generation. The family have been responsible for building up the herd of dairy cows on the farm, as well as planting hundreds of trees long before environmental consciousness became fashionable. The Van der Byl family have been instrumental in preserving the farm and village feel Irene offers, and we hope you enjoyed exploring it as much as we enjoyed sharing it with you… Thank you for visiting our lovely village.
