HAPPY BIRTHDAY! With all the recent holidays (school and public), the weeks seem to have flown past. The Annual Fishing and Market Day was a huge success, as usual, and we have managed to put together a few pages depicting the fun had by all in this issue. This annual event is always well anticipated and never disappoints.
On a more serious note, we have continued with the Rules and Regulations as a reminder to our residents as well as an important Dolomite Risk Management Program herein. Our feedback report on our Resident Satisfaction Survey is enlightening and it’s an exercise the HOA take seriously as an indication of what the residents’ thoughts are.
This year we celebrate 20 years as Centurion Residential Estate and Country Club. I had the pleasure of chatting to past Chairman, Willem de Kok, as well as our current Chairman, Sias de Klerk, on their thoughts and memories of the Estate. Our editorial in this issue is a wonderful reminder of just how far the Estate has progressed as well as how much the community has grown these past 20 years. Acknowledgement goes to the past and present Board of Directors as well as the staff (both past and present) of the Home Owners Association, who have given of their time, energy and effort to ensure that our Estate has grown into the prestigious estate that it is today. We look forward to the years to come and continuing on our successful path.
The many results and recent events from the Country Club side with our 2016 Men’s Club Championship having recently taken place, are an indication of how active our club is. As the weather gets a little cooler and we prepare for the anticipation of a chilly winter, make sure your wood pile is well stocked and your gas bottles filled – there is nothing worse than that first cold spell that takes you by surprise. ‘Till next month

DOLOMITE RISK MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
Most residents acquire properties in the Centurion Residential Estate and Country Club for no other reasons than lifestyle, safety and a long term investment.
4
APR/MAY 2016 | INTERFACE
Centurion is a dolomite prone area and, from an environmental perspective, this is something that needs to be constantly monitored and managed. A growing number of local government structures have already implemented processes to keep property owners accountable for managing their own dolomite risk management plans (DRMP), and legislation in this regard is expected to be promulgated in due course.
SANS 1936 is a document that inter alia provides guidelines regarding the prevention of land slips and sinkholes. Tshwane Metropolitan Council has already adopted the SANS 1936 guidelines and, in short, it focuses on uncontrolled water that may dissolve dolomite rock over time. The purpose is of course the prevention thereof, and the CHOA has adopted the guidelines referred to for residents to implement accordingly. Our approach is indeed to rather be safe than sorry.
then decided, in the broader interest of all home owners and their investments, to develop and provide a proper and detailed DIY type template to be completed by home owners, preferably on a monthly but not less than a two monthly basis.
In other words, when a home owner in future attempts to sell off or to effect any additions, the Local Authority concerned will most probably require an up-to-date DRMP as a prerequisite. The CHOA did consider the option to appoint an external contractor but this would have brought about a massive financial burden on the Estate. The Board
Your kind cooperation is appreciated in managing our environment responsibly.
Attached please find the document referred to for implementation by every home owner, and this will serve and assist in protecting your long term investment accordingly.

REVIEW PAIRED COFFEE AND CHOCOLATE EVENING AT THE CLUBHOUSE On Wednesday evening we attended the paired coffee – chocolate evening at the clubhouse. We thoroughly enjoyed this event and were excellently guided through the evening by Heavenly Coffees’ Francois, ably assisted by Elsabe, Michelle and Tshepo. We started with an excellent cappuccino accompanied by some delightful snacks provided by the club caterer. Our host delighted and amused us with a history of coffee, legends concerning coffee and a description of the origin and types of coffees marketed by Heavenly Coffees. Their retail outlet at 98 Theuns Street, Hennopspark, blends and roasts to order coffee beans and also have a number of different machines for sale or hire. The shop is open during business hours and is especially popular on Saturday mornings. They have some heavenly cakes to match. Our main course of baked broccoli cheese was accompanied by 3 different coffee samples and 3 different dark chocolates which we were invited to pair. Not all of us were of the same opinion, but we were pleased to be awarded free packs of various roasted coffee beans and generously, some won bigger prizes.
coffee houses when they were so popular, as he feared the intellectuals were up to no good, but there was such an uproar, he had to rescind the banning order very rapidly. Coffee beans are best picked be hand by women (too many colour-blind men) and the process following the picking is laborious. In the trade there are different types of beans. Those “washed” are the most expensive, followed by “semiwashed”, then “un-washed”. The “washed” beans use a large volume of water. Beans from high altitudes are generally favoured as best, but beans are purchased from many countries and blended , then roasted to taste. Do yourselves a favour and contact Francois direct on 082879 4000 or visit his outlet for further information.

We were told that an Ethiopian goat herd noticed his goats behaved with great gusto after chewing the little red beans fallen from a certain tree and thus “coffee” was discovered. Around 1600AD Pope Clement declared that the drink consumed by Muslims to keep them awake at Prayers was not a ‘devil drink’ as it tasted so good and thus coffee was introduced to the West. BIRDING FOR BEGINNERS Have you ever wondered how avid bird watchers can identify different bird species without much help of a birding book? We are fortunate enough to live in an area where birds are plentiful - something we might take for granted. For those of you who have noticed the different species but haven’t learnt the skill of identifying them as yet, we have put together a DIY guide to identifying birds.
them recognize members of their own species. These ‘field marks’ are helpful to us in distinguishing different species. Field marks of the head and wings are the most telling. CERTAIN FIELD MARKS OF THE HEAD INCLUDE: • Eyebrow stripe (line above the eye) • Eyeline (line through the eye) • Crown stripe (stripe in the midline of the head) • Eyering (ring of colour around the eye) • Colour of the upper and lower bill
Posture
A vertical or horizontal posture could be the telling sign as to which general group a bird belongs to.
Flight pattern
Have you ever noticed that most birds fly in a straight line, flapping in a constant rhythm but there are certain bird groups that have characteristic flight patterns that can help identify them.
14 Getting started
Identifying our feathered friends is much like recognizing people in your local community. Based on certain characteristics, such as habits, shape, walking style and habitat, once you start really paying attention to the bird life around you, you will notice many of the same species in your area. Birds are divided into general groups and this would be a good place to begin. These groups share certain similarities and if you can place a bird you’ve spotted into a group, it makes it a little easier to narrow down identifying them.
You could use the following features to help identify birds:
An up-an-down flight pattern could exhibit a steep, rollercoaster flight or a pattern of moderate rises and falls. Flapping versus gliding – some birds flap their wings several times followed by a glide whilst others are seen souring.
Habitat
Of course, birds species can only occur within certain types of habitats which complement their survival needs. Once you start avidly bird watching and identifying, you will notice various species within the same general group in our immediate area. With so many beautiful birds around, it’s hard not to notice them. We look forward to sharing more birding information with you (and you with us) as our bird watching skills improve… Feel free to send us your log of identified birds in and around our Estate so that we may feature them in future issues. (E-mail: interface@centuriongolfestate.co.za.)
Silhouette
Birds with the same body shape, proportions of the head, legs and wings, tail shape and length of their bill, although they may vary in size, are often part of the same general group. The silhouette of a bird can give one many clues as to their general group.
Field marks
Many of us are confused by the huge variety of patterns and colours which birds possess but this is nature’s way of helping APR/MAY 2016 | INTERFACE

SUCCULENTS - A GREAT CHOICE FOR DROUGHT-RESISTANT GARDENS Water restrictions and high maintenance costs are driving the trend towards lowwater, low-maintenance gardens. More and more people are doing away with lawns and flowerbeds to keep these water guzzlers to a minimum. Succulents are a great choice for drought-resistant gardens because they can withstand infrequent watering and extended dry spells. Succulents are making a comeback There is a misconception that succulents are prickly dry desert plants, lacking in colour and don’t flower. Not true! South Africa has a vast variety of fascinating succulents. Yes, you can have fun with succulents and they are making a comeback! The increased interest in indigenous plants and the environment means more attention is focused on many of our unique South African aloes and succulents. Have fun with the amazing array of textures and colours These plants come in all sorts of interesting shapes, textures and striking colours and thrive in cracks and crevasses, rockeries and sandy or gritty soils. You can play around with contrasting succulents - spiky, toothed, spongy and rounded shapes for eye-catching results.
17
How and where to plant these beauties Choose a spot where at least some of the area gets full sun for most of the day. Any soil will do as long as it is well drained. Succulents do not need a lot of nutrients so nutrient poor soils are fine. Heavy clay soil where water accumulates is not suitable for any succulents. A slope is great if you have it, but not a necessity. Use taller specimens at the centre of the area and spreading species at the edges or dotted among the larger plants as ground cover. Top the area with a layer of pebbles or small rocks to act as mulch, this will help prevent weeds and conserves moisture whilst allowing evaporation of excess water. Succulents work well with different coloured pebbles, gravels and stones. As water becomes more scarce, succulents will allow you to have a colourful and interesting garden despite heat waves and water restrictions. Once you finish your succulent garden, it will be a place of beauty and relaxation. Succulents have a way of captivating your attention, and they add an element of tranquillity to any space. Golf carts 1. The rules regarding the use of golf carts on the golf course as well as the streets on the Estate were drawn up to ensure the safety of drivers, the avoidance of unnecessary wear and tear to the golf course and the minimisation of inconvenience caused to golfers playing during normal playing hours. 2. All golf cart owners must apply at the CHOA office for a number for their golf cart for identification purposes. Only golf carts clearly displaying such a number may be driven on the streets of the Estate. 3. CELEBRATING 20 YEARS… May 2016 marks the 20 year anniversary of the existence of Centurion Residential Estate and Country Club. Back in 1996 I doubt the developers realised just how successful their endeavour would be and looking back, it’s evident that it’s been through hard work and dedication that the Estate is regarded as one of the most sought after estates in the country.
Then… Sitting down with Willem de Kok, the second Chairman of the Board of Directors, stories of the past 20 years help envisage what the Estate was like back then. When Willem and his wife chose our Estate for their retirement home, back in 1997, it was one of the best decisions they have ever made. Drawn to the golf course, they still reside in the home they built and Willem recalls only two other houses in their street when they first moved in. Their neighbour moved in a few months after them and he too, still resides there today.
20
APR/MAY 2016 | INTERFACE
The de Kok’s have made many neighbourhood friends over the years, some of whom they recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with at a dinner hosted in the Clubhouse. One of the most telling signs of how the Estate has matured is the fact that he recalls sitting on the Clubhouse patio and seeing the roofs of the houses on the hill opposite the lake. Today those roofs are hidden by the trees that have grown trees that were planted by the Club, the HOA and the home owners themselves. Shortly after settling in, Willem decided to get involved with the HOA and when the first Chairman, Ad Hemmes (who now resides in the Cape) stepped down, Willem was voted in to take the reins. He has since witnessed many changes to the Estate, both physical and management. He recalls the green palisade fence that first secured the boarders and compared to today’s technology, it’s hard to believe that that fence was a successful barrier to crime. Changes on the golf course really came into effect when the home owners purchased the Club from the developers in the year 2000. Cart paths, removal of sand and the
redevelopment of some of the greens are just some of the many improvements done over the years. Willem attributes the success of the Estate to competent and committed committee members as well as members of staff over the years. These hard working, dedicated people have ensured that our Estate has remained one of the best. As the Estate continues to grow, most new home owners are now rebuilding and remodelling, so the property values increase. Willem is proud of the fact that fellow home owners and residents take pride in looking after their properties and gardens making for a lovely drive through the streets of the Estate. Willem is pleased that he chose this Estate to call his home and he is looking forward to enjoying the family life it offers with his grandchildren for years to come.
Now.., Our current Chairman, Sias de Klerk, has also resided on the Estate since the early days.
Like Willem, Sias sings praises of the wonderful family lifestyle our Estate has to offer as he too has witnessed many happy residents choose Centurion Residential Estate and Country Club as their home. The development of our golf course has made it a very popular destination for golfers too. Sias comments that the Estate is now fully developed and trees that were first planted have grown into maturity in our gardens and common areas. He feels that the development over the past 20 years has resulted in our Estate being the best well positioned estate in Gauteng. We have some of the best schools, public as well as private, in the country on our doorstop and we have seen property values increase significantly over the years. Strategically well positioned with positive elements and a very capable team running things, Sias foresees a continued increase in property values and a successful path ahead. He looks forward to welcoming even more new families who choose to build their lives in our secure, harmonious, community driven lifestyle that is so sought after by many.

2016 MEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS This past weekend saw the conclusion of a super exciting tournament and one of the most important ones in any golf club’s annual calendar. Saturday, 9 April 2016 was day one of the championship with 96 entries and teeing off from one tee, one could feel the tension building throughout the day as the gents battled it out on the golf course. We had a clear leader in the A Division after round 1 with Gary Lauryssen shooting a superb gross score of 65. Day 2 of the tournament however painted a different picture and Gary was pushed all the way by runner-up of the tournament, Hendrikus Stoop who finished on 142 gross points, losing to Gary by one point. But it has to be said, well done to Gary for keeping a cool head and ending the tournament on 141 gross points. Brett Smith had Best Nett with 143 for the A Division.

The Club’s Mid-Amateur Champion is one of our new members, Christo Bosman and the Best Nett of the Tournament was won by Avgerinos Piaglis with an amazing 133 nett points. Well done to all the participants! It was indeed a superb Championship.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS FOR THE VETERANS, LADIES AND JUNIORS
Club Championships 2016 Ladies, Veterans & Juniors Prize Giving This past weekend saw the Club Championships for our Veterans, Ladies and Juniors taking place over two days. The ladies were hugely impressed with the attention to detail to make the championship extra special. Our Green keeping staff worked really hard and put in extra effort. This was clear to be seen with the lovely plants at the tee boxes and a special touch with pink tees. The battle started at 11h20 on Saturday afternoon concluding with a nice early start on Sunday morning. The Junior tournament ended with a play-off between Kyle Campbell and Ruhan Oosthuizen. Ruhan birdied the last play-off hole and Kyle then clinched the tournament with an Eagle. Exciting stuff. Prize giving took place straight after the championship on Sunday afternoon.

CAPTAIN’S REPORT By the time you read this, the Club Championships would have been done and dusted and a new champion would have been crowned. Some of us probably would have been feeling sorry for ourselves for the poor golf we played under pressure, but ultimately it is about participating in the Championship and being part of this club that counts. To all of you that played in this event, thank you, and congratulations to the winners. We are fast approaching that time of the year when the season is changing and the usual morning field crowd migrates to the afternoon field in search of warmer weather. As per customer practice, the Captain’s Challenge will also be moved to Saturday afternoons – so be on the lookout for the date when we change.
Our club had the privilege of, once again, hosting one of the IGT Tournaments in late February 2016 and the course turned out to be a good challenge to the participants who had to play in extreme conditions due to a heat wave. These events are well contested by all up and coming young professionals whose main ambition is to progress to the Sunshine Tour with the ultimate aim to participate on the European Tour. Centurion Country Club has always supported these young and upcoming professionals and has a number of IGT events booked throughout the year. The next one will in fact be hosted in April 2016. We are inundated with compliments from the professional golfers regarding the condition of our golf course and this is a result of the hard work of our grounds staff.
Monthly Medal - Feb 2016
Congratulations to our General Manager, Hans Jonck, who got married on 19 March 2016. We all wish you and Michelle all the very best for the future.

The Captain’s Challenge was held on the last Saturday of the month and the changed format of all four scores counting was certainly challenging. The four ball of Andre Roux, Steven Potkin, Nico Vermeulen and Steph Erasmus made a superb score of 144 points to win this challenge by a comfortable margin of 7 points. Well done and well played! A special thanks to our sponsor HOKAAI butchery of Centurion for donating the meat prizes. Our annual Club AGM has been scheduled for 17 May 2016 so be sure not to miss it. We have a few new sponsors on board to increase the prize value for our members and visitors so be on the look-out for the John Dory’s Jean Avenue Open day taking place on the first Thursday of every month. Then we have PSG Wealth who are sponsoring two of our Monthly Medals with additional prize money so look out for their representatives on 7 May 2016. We are also excited to let you know that our upgraded website has been launched in conjunction with the CHOA. Go take a look www.centruiongolfestate.co.za. “Golf is assuredly a mystifying game. It would seem that if a person has hit a ball correctly a thousand times, he should be able to duplicate the performance at will. But such is certainly not the case” – Bobby Jones Happy golfing

LADY CAPTAIN’S REPORT By the time the readers get to see this edition of our Interface, my time as Lady Captain of Centurion Country Club will sadly have come to an end. It has been a fulfilling two years as Lady Captain and as a committee member for a year with great memories made. There are a few people that I would like to say a “BIG THANK YOU” to and these are; Nicola, to Jannes and his team at the Pro Shop, to the entire Management team and last but not least, to Amarille and her team for always supplying our ladies with a superb meal at all times for all the functions that I have hosted in the past. I would also like to say ‘’thank you’’ to all our golf members at Centurion Country Club as well as the Home Owners Association. Thank you for all the support I received during my time as the Lady Captain. I wish Centurion Country Club everything of the best for the future.
During February we had 6 Ladies that played out for the Medal Trophy of 2015. Congratulations to Dalene Smith who won! Well done.

The CCC Early Bird Thursday Ladies are steamrolling ahead thanks to the enthusiastic support of Sue Smith. It is overwhelming and I’m so proud to be part of this group of awesome golfing ladies. Ladies, keep it up and thanks for your time and effort. Late February our Early Bird Thursday Ladies had a superb day of golf starting from early in the morning, ending really

late at night. This was due to birthday celebrations for Sue Smith’s big 50th Birthday! Thank You to Elize Visser and Karen Robinson for arranging this surprise day for Sue. Recently, our local teaching coach, Kyle Phelan introduced some ladies golf clinics to offer his assistance so Centurion can grow their ladies league section. Big thanks to Kyle Phelan for this. You can contact him on 074 801 3479 if you need private lessons to help your game. We finally managed to get our Mixed League winners from 2015 together for a group photo taken by Elna fourie and
what a lovely picture it turned out to be. Thanks Elna! A few of our golfing ladies also had some fun playing in a tournament over three days at Zebula Country Club and even won the “Best Dressed’’ prize so congrats to them. Ladies please check your emails for the invite to my Lady Captain’s Farewell Mini Golf Day on 21 April 2016. Happy golfing until the next report from our new Ladies Captain.
