REPORT CAPTAIN’s report What a great golfing experience our Club Championship turned out to be this year. Our website refers to our Estate as a golfing haven and this golfing haven showcased great golfers - Jacques Kruyswijk and Esme Behrens as our 2012 Champions. Jacques came in 7 under beating defending champion Herman Minnie and Cameron Arroyo in third place. Great golf guys but more about both our champions in next month’s issue. Each division produced worthy winners and my heartiest congratulations to all who achieved, to all who participated and to all who were humbled by the game of golf and who return to prepare for next year’s challenge. We had a great time out there! This year saw some well received changes in format and spreading the award ceremonies into two so that they could be held directly after each respective tournament worked very well. The successful tournament must be attributed to firstly your participation without which there can be no winners. The Ladies, Vets and Juniors were well represented and the highlight of the day for one of our proud juniors, Jordan Morris was his first of many hopefully, hole in 1 on number 11 during the tournament. Jordan treated the field to champers after the tournament and we were very proud to share this special day with him and his family. Well done Jordan!

Also to Errol and his support team especially Nicola and Norma, the catering team, Rodney, Haymish and Hayley who were up and about early each day to start off the field and of course, the green-keeping team whose on-going efforts are enormously appreciated by most of us. While our committee strives to continuously improve events such as these as well as the standard of our clubhouse and the condition of our course, I was unfortunately inappropriately publicly addressed during this past month by members who brought it to my attention that the course is not perceived as wonderful by all. While this has encouraged our team to work even harder to please more, it does make it necessary for me to explain our sand bag policy and pose another appeal for you, the member, to buy into the maintenance of the course as a vested interest in your club, Estate and the property you may own here. At most opportunities, I appeal to you to lead by example and repair pitch marks and divots and to respect the course when using golf carts. With regards the sand bags, it was a committee decision that visitors should rather be allowed to enjoy their golfing experience with us rather than being forced to buy and be forced to carry a sand bag. The committee with the caddies and maintenance staff have a plan in place to repair overlooked divots and this can only be improved if you,the member, sees fit to repair a divot even you were not responsible for causing it.

Golfing at our club is a lifestyle to most of us and we all take responsibility for our own divots but as for the few that are overlooked by a visitor or the maintenance staff, it would be appreciated if they could be filled by you. It doesn’t take much effort and it certainly isn’t compulsory but the visitors experience is unhampered, the maintenance team is assisted and it is a win, win situation all round. Please make yourselves more aware of the divots around you and feel free to empty your sand bags or sand bottles into them. This is what makes a good team. Winter is on its way. We have the Chairman’s Trophy to look forward to... Desert Rats wear maroon to red, Vleipaddas any shade of green and the Mountain Goats to wear stone/beige. League continues. The Blessies go off to Parys and the pending golf AGM requires your support. So I leave you with that, till next time, happy golfing! Barry

The Men’s field saw 117 golfers teeing off on Saturday, 16 March and I for one felt like I was in a PGA event as I stood facing the first fairway. This feeling unfortunately was short lived but I trust the experience remained awesome for the rest of the field. The ladies section has had quite an eventful month. Starting with a day trip to the ‘Eye of Africa’ which was arranged by Jannes and Sue Smith. We met at 05h30 at the clubhouse, Jannes gave us all a goodie bag consisting of a very nice Centurion CC golf towel and a sleeve of Taylormade balls just to mention a few of the things we were spoilt with. We drove in convoy to the ‘Eye of Africa’ where we teed off just after 07h00. Jannes and Sue ran 2 competitions, one being IPS which was won by Dee Meredith on a very good score of 40 points. The other competition played was a four-ball alliance which was won by Wilma de Wet/Helene Linder/Johanna Rathete/Joey du Toit on a great score of 92 points. It was Sue Smith’s birthday so Jannes arranged a birthday cake which we all enjoyed after the game. All in all it was a really great day out - a very big thank you to Jannes and Sue for making this day happen. Good news is they are going to arrange another day away in the near future so ladies, keep an eye out for it as it really is a day not to be missed. On 23 February the ladies section held a Mini Open, which was very kindly sponsored by CarolAnne Ferreria from Spar and Tops in Jean Avenue Centurion. It was a very successful day, we had 56 ladies taking part. The format was better-ball. First place went to Joanne Shields and Hanellie Saaiman with 45 points, second place also on 45 points went to Coleen Pike and L Smit and, in 3rd place was Marianne Brown and Myra Roberts with 44 points. Kim Brookes won nearest the pin on hole 3, Elize Visser was in form and took nearest the pin on holes 8 and 11 and nearest the pin on hole 17 was won by Rhona Topka. A very big thank you goes to Amarille, Rene and their team for providing us with a very nice lunch at our prizegiving, your hard work in making sure the dining room looks good and having the food set out nicely is really appreciated. Due to the success of this day, our sponsor has asked that we do it again. Our next Mini Open took place on 29 March and I am pleased to say that within a week of opening the time sheet we had a full field, thanks ladies,

Ladies trip to ‘Eye of Africa’ your continued support is appreciated. The weekend of 10 and 11 March saw our Ladies Club Championships being played. The weather was great and so was the camaraderie between all the ladies that took part. Our ladies Club Champion is Esme Behrens who shot a 148 gross, Congratulations Esme! Silver Division runner up was Emma du Bruin 150. The best Nett in the Silver Division was won by Helena Mowatt 149.

A note to all my friends and fellow golfers at Centurion Country Club I arrived at Centurion from Richards Bay in 2001. I joined Monument Golf Club but never met one single lady golfer the entire year so I then joined Centurion Golf Club and within the first week I had made many good friends whom I am happy to say, are all still my friends almost ten years later. I served more than six (and a bit) years on the committee with the last two years as Ladies Captain, I have to admit… I was pretty scared of what was ahead of me, but it was then that

I realised how many true friends I really had. Nothing was ever asking too much from anyone.

A Reminder FOR LADIES About two years ago I wrote an article for the Interface about Thermal Imaging. This was subsequent to a visit by me to the Health emporium in the Centurion Mall. I went specifically to have a scan for breast cancer, after a tip by a friend that it was able to diagnose lumps and bumps way before a mammogram.

She has just started a course of chemotherapy; she knows what is ahead of her, and she is in remarkable spirits, and determined to beat the beast.

Thankfully, my scan turned out to be clear, but following my previous article, I decided to go the whole hog and have a full body image. This was so useful as I never knew until then that I had an under performing thyroid - I got very tired easily, and that was the cause. Recently we have all had a shock as one of our golfers discovered that she had breast cancer. Added to which we became aware of another resident who has also developed

She asked me to write another article about Thermal Imaging, to impress on people the importance of keeping a watching brief on their health. So many people say “Oh it won’t happen to me”. Doubtless she also did, but it costs so little to have an image done - R450, that I would encourage all the ladies to go to Dr. Jacques Lotz in the Health Emporium and book a scan. I did - last week, and was interested to see that,

although I was clear, Dr. Lotz wanted to see me sometime next year, to check on a build-up of tissue in the breast. The most important factor in Thermal Imaging is that it is possible to see tell-tale red spots as much as three years before those spots become a real problem. The whole thing is shown in glorious technicolour - blues, greens, black, yellow, all denoting a different tissue - and the red that can denote something which requires further examination. Please, ladies, get yourself examined by Dr. Lotz he is also a research chemist who is on the trail of natural herbs which can help cancer sufferers - it is a half hour very well spent. Sue Miles
