Arbor Day 1 September 2012 at Centurion Country Club As sources of building material food, medicine and simple scenic beauty such as trees play a vital role in the health and well-being of our communities. Right across South Africa during the week of 1 – 7 September 2012 businesses, schools and organisations are encouraged to participate in community ‘greening’ events to improve the health and beauty of the local environment and propose a green future for South Africa. Here at Centurion Country Club, you can get involved with this project on Saturday, 1 September 2012. At the country club we
have a long term programme to plant trees at different holes to beautify our Estate. This project is driven by our Grounds Committee. We urge you to come to the club house on 1 September 2012 where trees will be on show and you have the opportunity to invest by purchasing one or more of the trees that will be planted and will then bear your family name. Everyone is welcome - even home owners who might want to plant trees at their homes can also come and discuss this with our Grounds Committee who will be available on the day. Times will be from 9am to 12pm.
Love me, love my pet After recent bouts of cruelty to cats, particularly in the Beverly Hills Crescent area, we wish to shed some light on what the SPCA’s opinions are on community living and the law against the cruelty of animals. SPCAs across the country will tell you that the issue of pets in complexes, neighbour disputes involving pets and properties where pets are and are not allowed, take up an inordinate amount of time. Heart-breaking stories abound of people needing to move but unable to find suitable accommodation to rent that will accept their pets so many give up their animals. On the other hand, SPCAs hear of the frustrations relating to untrained, unsocialised pets or the multitude of issues that can arise when ‘pets move in’. It may take compromise and it certainly takes planning but there are ways to accommodate responsible owners and pets. Take time to check if advertised accommodation accepts pets and if so, under what circumstances. Understand why pets can be rejected in complexes, etc. and put yourself in the shoes of the landlord, homeowners association or body corporate as they may have had bad experiences with irresponsible pet owners who did not sterilize their pets or confine them safely or failed to pick up faeces. Perhaps pets had been sneaked in or they ruined carpets. There may be worries about complaints from I N TERFACE • AU GU ST 2 012 • p g 6
neighbours about barking or howling dogs, cats that roam and spray or ruin furniture of other residents. Sell yourself as a responsible pet owner, show your commitment to responsible pet care and being responsible as a neighbour. RESPONSIBLE OWNERS: •
Clean up after their pets and dispose of the waste in a sanitary manner
•
Keep their dogs on leashes whilst walking, and make sure their pets are comfortable when they are not at home
•
nsure that their animals are identified – E the NSPCA recommends microchipping
•
Obey local by-laws pertaining to animals
•
pay or neuter their pets not only to S improve the health and behaviour of the pets but also to prevent their animals adding to the tragic problem of pet overpopulation
• Maintain an active tick and flea programme so these pests won’t spread •
Use available resources such as your local SPCA which may have knowledge on where pets are definitely not allowed and where they can be allowed under certain conditions.
Prove you are responsible by putting documentation together such as a letter of
reference from your current landlord or body corporate, written proof your adult dog has completed a training course or obedience class or that your puppy is enrolled in a socialisation class. A letter from your veterinarian is also a good idea, stating that your pet is a registered patient and that you are diligent in your pet’s medical care. Supply documentation that your pet has been spayed or neutered and is fully vaccinated – including against rabies. Sterilised pets are healthier, calmer and far less likely to be a nuisance to their neighbours. Empathise with cleanliness concerns, pointing out that your pet is either litter-box trained or house-trained. Give an undertaking that you will always clean up after your pets(s) and properly dispose of the waste. Promote yourself as an excellent resident or tenant. Pet owners have to search harder for a place to live but are likely to stay put much longer. Lower vacancy rates mean lower costs and fewer headaches for landlords or body corporates or estate agents. Let prospective landlords know that you understand that living with a companion animal is a privilege not a right. It may be necessary to pay a little extra by way of an extra security deposit to cover any damages your pet may cause. The best way to Ms. Martie MacDougall – show sincerity is by putting your money where
Financial Director
OME OWNERS ASS your mouth is. It proves a point.
If permission is given to have a pet, be sure to get it in writing. Sign a pet addendum to your agreement. If your lease has a no-pets clause, then verbal agreement is not enough, rather cross out this clause and have both parties initial it, then attach the agreement with the terms and conditions as applicable. Be sure it has been removed from BOTH copies. Discuss

pet-related fees or deposits in advance and have these put in writing too.
Be honest and do not try to sneak a pet in. Keeping an animal in violation of a no-pets rule contributes to the general inclination of landlords or body corporates not to allow pets. You may also render yourself liable to eviction and other legal action.

REPORT CAPTAIN’s report What a month of action at Centurion with the legendary River Runs through it competition happening, as well as all our club champions participating in the Champion of Champions and then a little further afield, Ernie brings home the coveted Claret jug! What more could we ask for? The weekend of 13 July 2012 saw the first leg of the River Runs through it competition take off at Irene Golf course. On this day the competition initiated by Steve Joubert (thanks Steve!) saw teams from Irene, Zwartkop and ourselves compete in a better ball matchplay, a day in which Irene (we thought) benefited from home course advantage. The following day took place at Zwartkops where the format was foursomes and the last day the heavy guns came out to play individual matchplay. There was much fun and laughter but by this stage serious competition between the clubs was established and when Irene took the trophy for the first time since the inception of the tournament, we knew that it wasn’t just day one’s home ground advantage! Prize giving took place, afterwhich we entertained our guests to Amarille’s traditional Sunday lunch and we, while being quite sore at coming a close second by 1.5 points, could not have been prouder at finishing off at our club. The course, the clubhouse, the lunch and of course, the people make this a very good place to belong. Thank you Errol, Jannes, Nicola, Amarille and all concerned who contributed to the resounding success of this tournament!
MONTHLY MEDAL – August 2012 Men’s: A Division 1st 2nd In the meanwhile the league matches continue, distance markers are being replaced, some of the bunker sand is being considered and certain of the ladies t boxes are being redone. A big ‘thank you’ to all who contributed towards a donation in the pro shop for the late Benji Makinta’s family and to Errol and Jannes who attended the funeral. On a happier Congratulations and Kelly have a nicer couple and excitement together.

B Division
And of course well done Ernie! We couldn’t be prouder.
Next, each division winner of the club champs stepped up to take on their counterparts from Hillside, Services, Woodhill, Blue Valley, Zwartkops, Els Club, Silver Lakes, Cullinan, Pebble Rock, Irene, Wingate, Bronkhorspruit, Waterkloof, PCC and Akasia. Thank you to Jaques Kruiswijk, Neil Nortje, J van der Merwe, Liezl Bezuidenhoudt, Elize Visser, Wilma de Wet and Rosa Lombard who represented CCC. After a gruelling day of golf Jaques Kruyswijk won the tournament with a score of 143 (1 over) after a play-off against Fourie Zietsman from Akasia. In her division, Elize Visser did us proud and took the honours and when the day was done Centurion Country Club Ladies came out the victorious winners of the Champion of Champions! The division A, B and C winners were calculated on the afternoon round for the men and the club trophy went to Pretoria Country Club. We really are very proud of all who participated, thank you.

REPORT y d CAPTAIN’s report
It has been quite a busy golfing month. July saw the 4th year of ‘A River Runs Through It’ tournament being played between ourselves, Irene CC and Zwartkop CC. This tournament was the brain child of Steve Joubert and is proving to be very successful. It really brings good camaraderie between us and our neighbours which was the intention when this tournament was started. The ladies that represented Centurion were Sue Smith, Althea Oosthuizen, Hayley Mendes, Karen Robinson, Helena Mowatt, Cheryl Pretorius and Rosa Lombard. Thanks ladies for giving up your weekend and making a valuable contribution to the tournament. Irene CC came out the overall winners, the trophy was handed over to them by last year’s winners Zwartkop. The prize-giving was held at Centurion as we were this year’s hosts. We were treated to a full Sunday lunch after the prize-giving. It was a great way to finish off a good golfing weekend, we enjoyed a few laughs and a couple of drinks with the Irene and Zwartkop players - we all came away having made a few more golfing friends. Hans did a fine job recording all the scores each day. Can’t wait till next year’s tournament.
Karen Robinson ran the Thursday ladies competition for 2 weeks during June while I was away, thanks Karen. On 19th July we held our 3rd ‘Spar Mini Open’. I am very grateful to CarolAnne from the Jean Ave Spar who makes this day possible with her sponsorship of all the prizes and the deserts at lunch. The caddies received a hamper from the Spar on the day which brought a smile to their faces. Amarille, once again, went out of her way serving us a truly wonderful lunch and I received nothing but compliments about the way the dining room was laid out and the excellent lunch that was served. Thank you Amarrille. I would also like to say thank you to Nicola and the guys in the Pro Shop for all the hard work they put in to make the day a success. Some very good golf was played on the day. In 1st place from Irene CC was M Kleynhans, O Bothma, A Craus and M Stein with 90 points. In 2nd place was our Centurion girls K Robinson, S Smith, D Arroyo and E Visser with 87 points and in 3rd place was W de Wet, A van der Bijl, J Steyl and I du Plessis on 84 points. I am hoping to hold another Mini Open in October. Our CCC ladies Open will be taking place on 20 September 2012.
The GNGU Champion of Champions was played on 22 July 2012 at Waterkloof. Well done to our Centurion girls Wilma de Wet, Rosa Lombard, Elize Visser and Lizel Bezuidenhout being the team winners. Elize Visser won the B division. The Sanlam regional finals are being played here at Centurion CC on Sunday 29 July 2012. Winners of each division will go through to the finals being held at Sun City later in the year. The ladies Saturday league is now underway. We played our first game against Wingate Park GC at Wingate and we came away with all 3 points, well done team. The Thursday ladies league has done our club proud, they won the group so are now in the play offs against Silver Lakes, the first leg being played next Thursday. Thanks to Sue Smith, our league co-ordinator, for her hard work ensuring the smooth running of this year’s league. Our Thursday ladies competition is still being played in the afternoon, first tee time being 11h00, please book in the pro shop and arrive at the club by 10h30. Till next month!

Ladies, you owe it to your skin… Book a facial! What is a facial? A facial is a skin treatment done by a qualified skincare therapist. A facial cleanses, exfoliates, hydrates and nourishes the skin, promoting a rejuvenated, clear, healthy skin and complexion. A professional skin analysis helps you understand and treat your skin according to its needs.
Who can have facials? Everyone! You have one skin for your whole life – it’s worth investing in it! Facials can be done for pre-teens, to educate them about basic skin care routines. Teens often need deep-cleansing and purifying treatments. Adults need to treat dehydration, prevent premature ageing and combat dull, lacklustre skin.
What are the benefits of a facial? • Deep cleansing of the layers of the epidermis • Detoxifies, energizes and tones the skin • I ncreases blood circulation and improves the flow of oxygen and nutrients to skin cells • Facials slow the formation of skin wrinkles and fine lines • Helps keep the skin hydrated • Improves skin texture and clarity
• Maintains skin elasticity and firmness • Gives the skin a youthful appearance • Minimizes breakouts, blackheads and other skin congestion • Gives the skin a healthy glow • Helps relax facial muscles, to prevent tension lines from forming • Soothing and relaxing for the body and mind
How often can facials be done? It is recommended that facials are done every 4 – 6 weeks, to maintain optimum results. For specific targeted treatments, such as treating acne or pigmentation, a course of weekly facials can be done for 6 weeks, as an intensive booster programme. The benefits of regular skin treatments must not be underestimated. Women tend to see this as a luxury, to rather spend their money on their family, or don’t have enough time. However, I believe facials are completely justified, everyone deserves it and we owe it to our skin!
How to decide which products to use? Consumers are bombarded with skincare products everywhere. However, I believe in educating the client, to understand product ingredients, uses and reasons. It’s important that products do not contain artificial fragrances, as this causes skin sensitivity. Mineral oil causes dehydration and skin congestion, alcohol dries the skin, chemical colourants dehydrate the skin and paraben preservatives also sensitise the skin.
How important is skincare at home? Using the correct products all the time at home is very beneficial. It prolongs the results of a professional skin treatment and keeps the skin properly hydrated. Cleansing the skin morning and night is imperative. Moisturising the skin is vital, as it hydrates the skin and forms a protective barrier. It’s very important to use sun protection every day!
