A FRESH NEW SEASON EDITOR’S LETTER

Each new season is welcomed as we look forward to a change in the weather, beautiful surrounds and the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors a bit more. The new Board of Directors as voted in at the recent AGM are featured in this issue and we hope that this gives you a little more insight into each one of them. Pieter Verster has provided us with a comprehensive list of birds spotted on our beautiful Estate. Proof that although we live in a vibrant city, our efforts to provide a superior lifestyle for all residents (feathered friends included) in a safe and aesthetically pleasing surroundings are bearing fruit. It’s wonderful to see mother nature enjoying our surrounds as much as we do. Please let Pieter know should

you spot additional birds to add to the list - it is a rather impressive one with 124 different species already on it. We were so excited about local resident, Brandon Stone, winning the Scottish Open that we proudly feature him on our cover and inside this issue. More exciting news is that we have decided to revert back to the monthly publishing of Interface Magazine (with the exception of Dec/Jan which will remain one issue). From October 2018 you can look forward to receiving your Estate magazine every month. Till next issue

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER’S DESK

I would like to welcome our new CHOA Board of Directors. I am happy to report that we have already had several successful meetings and there is a revitalised energy with exciting enhancements currently being discussed. A key component to areas that require attention on our Estate includes separating Capital Replacement from Capital Enhancement, of which any emphasis needs to align with our brand and good governance. We continue to work hard with a common goal of ensuring our Estate remains the superior lifestyle of choice for all residents to enjoy, in a safe and aesthetically pleasing surrounding. The ongoing challenges with the local municipality remain regarding a list of items in need of their attention within the Estate. We are not unique and the majority of other estates in Tshwane are experiencing the same or similar issues. While we continue to persevere and hope sanity prevails soon, we cannot allow certain areas to deteriorate any further and we have taken on several tasks like repainting of all turning circles within the Estate and the removal of light poles that have fallen over ourselves. We are also considering the assistance of outside professionals, who might fast track solutions and service delivery. The CHOA has distributed two new tenders for the painting of the John Vorster wall which will hopefully be done before the rainy season. The other tender was for the river cleaning.

a very successful financial year. It’s no secret that the golf Industry has been in a state of ‘over supply and under demand’ for a number of years, too many golf courses and not enough golfers, with the majority of sports clubs suffering significant losses. So, for our club to not only have been enhanced in infrastructure and experience, but to now be turning a profit is remarkable to say the least. This is also attributable to the residents using and supporting the facility, which is great to see. It certainly adds significant value to the social interaction and atmosphere amongst our community. In closing, it continues to be a privilege for me, the management team and staff to serve our wonderful community and as always we thank you, the resident for the continued loyalty and support. Warm regards,

Jaco Venter

General Manager The CHOA recently handed over the blankets collected in our charity drive to the Caring Daisies. These will be distributed to those in need. Thanks go to all the residents who kindly donated to this worthy cause.

As always, our security team are continuously working towards ensuring our Estate remains a safe environment for all and one of the concerns raised by the Security Committee has been the safety of the area at the main gate. This committee will be presenting a proposal to the Board within the near future which will focus on the erection of physical gates at the main gate in an effort to secure it even more. Communication plays a vital role in our community and we have decided to revert back to publishing the Interface magazine on a monthly basis from October 2018. With that in mind, Spring is just around the corner and we look forward to warmer weather and seeing more residents out and about as the evenings become more pleasant. New seedlings will shortly be planted in the communal gardens and we can already see some residents preparing their gardens for the new season ahead. I would like to congratulate our Sport Club, Edwin Nel, Hans Jonk, the Committee and their staff at the Club on

Celebrating Women’s Day The Safety and Security Manager, Stoney Steenkamp, decided to spoil the ladies in the CHOA office on Women`s Day. We hope all the ladies on the Estate also had a wonderful Woman’s Day.

FEATHERED FRIENDS OF OUR ESTATE

We share our beautiful Estate with our feathered friends, but just how many different species have been recorded in the Estate?

The rarest bird seen on our Estate has to go to the Greater Painted Snipe seen in March 2018 in the little stream at the back of the par 5 first green. The reporting rate in the table below indicates your likelihood to see any bird in the greater Centurion area if you birded for a morning.

Over the last 5 years 124 different species have been identified, some of which are common and some which have only been seen once. This is a pretty remarkable diversity given that there has only been around 800 (excluding sea birds) ever seen in South Africa, of which just over 700 are considered resident or annually migrating to us during our warmer summer period.

So who will be the next person to find something new and exciting for our Estate list? Please notify me on 083 271 8143 if you do spot anything exciting.

BRANDON STONE WINS THE SCOTTISH OPEN

We’ll take it? Thats, surely the understatement of his golf career! Stone (25) or better known to some of us as “Pebbles”, recently became the fourth South African to win the Scottish Open after Ernie Els, Retief Goosen and Tim Clark. More than 100 players were more fancied in the betting at the beginning of the week, which was no surprise.

Stone’s 10-under 60 secured a four-shot victory at the Scottish Open, earning him the third professional title of his career (the first outside of South Africa) and the bonus prize of a qualifying spot at the British Open at Carnoustie.

Brandon is no stranger to any of us on the Estate, having grown up crawling on the floor in his dad’s golf shop (Stoney’s Golf) at the time and 25 years on he still calls this his home. Brandon has already won twice on the European Tour (BMW SA Open in 2016 and Alfred Dunhill Championship in 2017), but none will come much sweeter than this.

Stone rolled in four birdies on his front nine on the Sunday, then more on Nos. 10, 12, 14 and 15. He curled in a 40-foot eagle putt at No. 16, virtually guaranteeing him the win and leaving him needing one birdie on his final two holes for a 59.

Stone’s approach to the 18th green at the Scottish Open skipped on and came to rest about 8 feet from the hole. His caddy hadn’t let him look at a scoreboard all day, so it was only as Stone walked toward the green that he was informed he had a birdie putt for a 59. He sank to his haunches and dropped his putter in despair after narrowly missing out on becoming the first player in history to shoot a round of 59 on the European Tour. Stone let his caddy read the line - “This is completely up to you,” Stone told him - and it looked like the putt was going to roll into the cup before it curled just left. He slumped almost to his knees, put both hands to his face, then stared at the ball for some time. “I rolled it over his mark,” Stone said of his caddy, “but he did criticize my pace so he is probably right. Didn’t hold its line, but we’ll take it.” That elusive sub-60 round in 46 years of European Tour play will have to wait for another tournament. It was officially the 19th round of 60 on the tour - 18 players have achieved the feat, with Darren Clarke doing so twice. There have officially been nine sub-60 rounds on the PGA Tour, with one of them being a 58 by Jim Furyk at the Travelers Championship in 2016. For the No. 371-ranked Stone, it was a return to form after a disappointing season. He had missed the cut at nine of his previous 16 events and recorded only two finishes inside the top 60 in 20 starts since October 2017.

12

AUG/SEP 2018 | INTERFACE

“When that thing went home, the emotions came flooding,” Stone said. “I had to really struggle to keep it in. It’s been a long 18-month journey making a few changes, but the swing felt incredible today, the putting even better and the mental state was flawless. The day when I shot 60 and won the Scottish Open is something I’m going to hold dear to my heart for a very long time.”

His run of back-nine birdies allowed him to pull clear of Eddie Pepperell, who led for much of the final round after picking up six strokes in his first 10 holes. He shot 64 to finish alone in second place, one clear of Luke List (64), 2008 Masters champion, Trevor Immelman (65) and unheralded Swede, Jens Dantorp (68). Pepperell and Dantorp joined Stone in securing last-gasp places at the British Open, for being the leading three players not otherwise exempt for Carnoustie who finished in the top 10. Rickie Fowler, the champion the last time the Scottish Open was staged at Gullane in 2015, shot 68 and was in a threeway tie for sixth place. Following his victory, Stone had to quickly find some accomodation and cancel his tour of some of Scotland’s finest whisky distilleries due to the small matter of playing in the 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie. “We were planning on returning our rental car, renting a small job and driving all the way to Islay to do a few of the distilleries on that side, but instead I’ll ended up playing Carnoustie,” Stone had felt some familiarity on the windswept northeast Scottish coast because he was one of 12 South Africans in the field, and one of 5 to make the cut ending in joint 61st. There is no doubt that our local resident should start getting comfortable playing amoungst the likes of Tiger Woods, Jordan Speith and Dustin Johnson to name but a few, as he now sits in good stead for the year ahead.

“On behalf of the Centurion Home Owners, we congratulate you “Pebbles”. The community is extremely proud of what you are achieving and that you still choose to call our Estate your home,” said Chris Bentley (CHOA Director).

“I can’t begin to thank everyone here enough for all the messages and support. I have the privilage of doing what I love and travelling to wonderful places around the world but I’m pleased to say there is no place like home and our Estate ranks with the best of them,” said Stone on his return from the Open Championship.

ELECTRICITY THEFT AWARENESS

A resident recently alerted us to the fact that their tenant is somehow ‘stealing’ electricity within the Estate. Although all legalities were sound when leasing the house to this particular tenant (ITC checks, etc were done), the tenant requested an extension on a portion of the deposit payable and the owners kindly agreed. The tenant then later refused to pay the outstanding portion stating various facts and figures although he was in breach of contract. That was the first red flag! The owners have since discovered that this tenant has been stealing electricity as well. Unsure as to how the tenant is managing to keep his electricity on when the meter hasn’t registered any use for the past 4 months, Tshwane Municipality have been alerted to the fact and the owner is now in the process of legal action to evict the tenant. Home owners are warned to diligently check utility bills every couple of weeks as the dangers of letting out a property and having a similar situation are very real.

LADY CAPTAIN’S REPORT

A JUNIOR GOLFER TO KEEP YOUR EYE ON!

I am so humbled and feel deeply privileged to represent Centurion Country Club as Lady Captain for 2018/2019. Thank you, ladies, for trusting and believing in me! With so much hard work done by our previous lady Captain’s, the foundations have been laid and I will do my best to take this to another level. I will aim to inspire and encourage members to develop the skills they have on the course and to widen their knowledge of the rules of golf. With this I hope to motivate our young ladies to become competitive members and be part of the remarkable group of women who are all leaders, conquerors and so inspirational, each in their unique way. Our ladies are very focused when playing leagues, championship or challenges and our amazing results show it. It will be my focus to encourage each representative on the following: • BE COOPERATIVE: No matter how you think you are playing, the more you compete, the better you get. • BE FAIR: Know the rules, compete (social or competition) skillfully. • BE GRACIOUS: Win or lose never lose your “cool” on the golf course. Remember a bad attitude is just as bad as a bad swing. • BE HONORABLE: Respect the game and everyone’s contributions. • BE HUMBLE: Take success in the stride and share credit. • BE EXCITED: Play golf, smile more, do new things, don’t gossip, show more gratitude, do things that challenge you, be brave, be healthy and change because if you change then everything around you changes. The introduction to our new early bird mascot, Zazoo was well received. He featured in a few photos with our ladies, having lots of fun and laughter on our beautiful but challenging golf course. Next on the calendar was our Women’s Charity Golf Day on 9 August 2018, where all the proceeds went to “Good Morning Angels”, initiated by our previous ladies Captain, Sue Smith. As you may recall the funds raised last year went towards emotional contributions to little Chane Mostert, paying for her CT scans and also to the Kotze family medical bills being paid in full after the tragic loss of their son. We are also working very hard to secure the Ladies Sunshine Tour for 2019/2020. Presentations are currently underway and we expect an answer by the end of September 2018. Your prayers for this will be appreciated because with God nothing is impossible. There are two things you can do with your head down – play golf and pray! I’m still working on both… from your always loving Lady Captain

Charmaine Engelbrecht

Bernhard Köster, one of our members at Centurion Country Club and son of Dr Hinner Köster, was recently invited to play in the IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championships (San Diego) and FCG Callaway World Junior Championship (Palm Desert) in California, USA. He played in the 13 to 14 year old junior boys division, being one of the youngest participants in the field of 160 players and qualifies to still play next year in the same age group in both events. This tournament has previously been won by players such as Ernie Els, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickleson, Phil Jonas and Dale Hayes - attracting the best junior golfers in the world. In extreme heat of above 45°C, Bernhard averaged below 80 over 6 days for both tournaments, playing from tees between the Championship and Men’s tees as a boy that has just turned 13 years old. Earlier in the year he also won the Tshwane Junior Open (A-Division for boys up to 18 years) as a 12-year old, with a nett score of 69 (gross score of 74). He will also play in the u15 division at the Junior African Open tournament, which will take place at San Lameer at the end of August 2018. Bernhard is currently coached by the well-know ex professional golfer, Nico van Rensburg, a good friend of Ernie Els and currently also the Business Development Manager for the Ernie Els Group.

WE LOVE OUR CHILDREN

As detailed in a previous article, the Centurion Golf Estate and Country Club is one of the oldest estates in the country. At the time, estate living was quite a new concept, with the developers embarking on a brave and adventurous project. On its insistence and demand, local metropolitan municipal authority is the proud owner of, among other things, the road infrastructure.

Therefore, there is no differentiation between the roads within the Estate and those outside of it when it comes to municipal traffic laws and infringement. You are actually using public roads, even though you are driving within the Estate. Hence, you will recall that the use of golf carts within the Estate and the rules pertaining thereto, were detailed in the past. Because the road network within the Estate is public, the Home Owners Association can merely sensitise the users of the roads within the Estate to the speed at which they travel without being able to enforce speed limits by means of speed traps, fines, etc. Actual law enforcement is to be attended to by municipal officials duly appointed and authorised to do so. It will therefore be completely legal should a Tshwane Metro Police Officer decide to set up an official roadblock on the inside of the Estate entrance gate. Or they could issue fines regarding the use of the roads within the Estate.

PLEASE DRIVE SLOWLY WE OUR CHILDREN 18

AUG/SEP 2018 | INTERFACE

The same walls surrounding you, creating the safe and secure environment in which you live, can also create a false sense of untouchability and elevation above the law specifically regarding the use of the roads. The comments and complaints regarding the use of the roads and specifically speeding, as were made during the recent Annual General Meeting should therefore be taken seriously - a harsh accusation against all residents. Having created this community of like-minded members enjoying the tranquillity and safety of the Estate, protected from the lawlessness on the “outside”, the continuous complaints received of speeding and conduct bordering on reckless driving is a serious accusation against all that the Estate strives to be. Residents, and for that matter visitors to the Estate, don’t seem to take heed of the fact that such action is in fact unlawful – a serious offence that would not be taken lightly should one be caught outside the Estate walls behaving in the same manor. The value of your property is also at risk should the serene sense of community and the ambience of the Estate continue to be questioned as a result of reckless road usage. Driving within an estate where children are encouraged to roam freely, residents enjoy the freedom of a safe movement, with or without their pets, and guests make use of the golf course, should in fact alert a driver to be more careful, more mindful of speeding and be extra vigilant. It could well be one of your children coming around the bend or you on the golf cart crossing the road! Residents of this sought after Estate pride themselves as being a community sharing interests and aspiring to the same high standard of living. One should perhaps consider the example being set to the children of the Estate and co-residents when choosing to drive over the prescribed speed limit on the Estate roads. Be the change you want to see!
