THE YEAR AHEAD EDITOR’S LETTER I blinked and 2017 was here! Never before have I experienced such a ‘hit the ground running’ start to the year and I do hope that this is an indication of only good things to come… We started off the year with a little facelift to our magazine. Subtle changes here and there which we hope will be to our reader’s liking and with much more planned for the year ahead, we look forward to improvements as each issue goes to print. Along with the new year often comes new beginnings and our Safety & Security Manager, Mr Kobus Blom, bid us farewell at the end of January 2017. We welcome Mr Stoney Steenkamp in his place and look forward to working with him. Our Resident’s Bar has also recently received a rejuvenation with its successful refurbishment which is inviting to say the least. Coupled with the great food and drinks on offer, we look forward
4
to welcoming more residents to join us in experiencing all that our club has to offer. In the centre of this issue you will find the club’s calendars for the year indicating exciting social events amongst other important dates. The new Ready Made Meals Menu has also been added and these pages can all be removed from the centre of this issue to be placed on your fridge for easy reference. In keeping with our 2017 theme, we’ve included the tree as well as the bird of the year into this issue along with some more décor advice from Michelle Fortune. I for one am looking forward to bringing you more exciting updates, news and information with each issue as the year unfolds. Hello 2017!

TWINKLE BRIGHT COMPETITION 2016
Congratulations to our winners of the Twinkle Bright Competition 2016 – the van der Watt’s of 114 Santa Monica Drive. The following letter was received once they were told they were the winners:
“What a wonderful experience to be a part of the CGE first Twinkle Bright Competition! The children were very excited from the beginning. They helped with the hanging and positioning of the lights... They decorated the golf cart and with a lot of enthusiasm, took part in the evaluation of all the houses entered. All was done in the giving spirit of Christmas! We, as a family, hope that this will become a yearly event and that many more houses will become involved! Let's get our Estate Twinkling Bright in December 2017!” Zelda, Rikus, Mihke en Divan van der Watt.
7
Our winners made an extra effort with even the kids dressing up and carols playing in the background whilst Santa sat on the roof with a bag full of goodies.

FROM THE
CAPTAINS HAPPY 2017! Once again, it’s time to say good-bye to the old year and ring in the new. So much was achieved by Centurion Country Club during what was a very successful 2016. In many ways we cannot wait to welcome all the new challenges which this new year will bring. We have laid the foundations for building bigger and better in the future. A special thanks to all our existing and new sponsors who contributed during the last year. Together we are looking forward to the new challenges ahead of us. What a perfect start to the new year for our very own Kim Williams who won the Supersport Ladies Challenge played at Huddle Park, part of the Sunshine Tour events. Congratulations to her.
8
The two important events this year which all the golfers at Centurion Country Club should diarise are our up and coming Club Championships, namely the Men’s Club Championship taking place on the weekend of 25 and 26 March 2017, and the Ladies, Veteran’s and Junior Club Championships taking place on 8 and 9 April 2017. As always, these are our flagship events for the year, so please put your name down for these events at the Pro Shop. The prize giving will follow after the last event on Sunday afternoon. Our first Ladies Open will be held on 20 April 2017 so please put this event into your diary too. The Early Birds started up again on 26 January 2017 and we’re looking forward to lots of support from the ladies at our Thursday morning competitions this year. Any new members and existing members are most welcome to join in. We meet on the patio, outside the Pro Shop at 07h30 every Thursday morning. The first Captain’s Challenge will take place on Saturday, 25 February 2017. A big thank you to Peter and his team at Hokaai Butchery for sponsoring this event. It is much

appreciated by all the members of the Centurion Country Club and I am appealing to all members to support Hokaai Butchery. By the time you read this report some of our league games will already have kicked off. To all of you participating this year and representing Centurion Country Club, thank you and all the best for the rest of the year. Having won three divisions last year we certainly have a challenge on our hands to better these results. The annual League Braai was recently held and the winning teams received medals for winning their divisions in the League. The final of the Matkovich Challenge between Centurion, Woodhill and Silver Lakes Golf Clubs will take place in February. This Mercedes Benz trophy is always fiercely contested by the three clubs. Going into the final round Centurion is marginally ahead by two points. Lastly, residents must please note that the clubhouse is also your facility. A number of events have been scheduled for this year so please feel free to support and participate in these events.

TREE OF THE YEAR ZIZIPHUS MUCRONATA
Introducing the Tree of the Year (2017) - Ziziphus Mucronata - Hairy Buffalo-Thorn or ‘Harige Blinkblaar Wag-n-Bietjie’. The Buffalo Thorn is a small to medium sized tree, reaching a height of about 10 m. It can survive in a variety of soil types, often on soils deposited by rivers, occurring in many habitats and grows frequently on termite mounds. You have to wait a while… It is believed that the ‘Wag-'n-Bietjie’ tree represents how we experience life in all its ‘ups and downs’. The young twigs are zigzagged, indicating that life is not always straightforward. Two thorns at the nodes are also significant; one facing backward representing where we come from and one facing forward, representing where we are going. However, it is the thorns that give the tree its common Afrikaans name of ’Wag-'n-Bietjie’. These thorns are extremely vicious and all those who have come into contact with them will know that you have to ‘wait-a-bit’ before you can free yourself from these feisty thorns!
10
It is a beauty! This beautiful tree’s leaves turn golden yellow in autumn and flowers are borne in dense clusters in leaf axils, appearing from October to February. The fruit is a smooth, shiny, leathery, reddish-brown or deep red when ripe, slightly sweet and the pulp is dry. The fruit sometimes stays on the plant long after the leaves have fallen (March to August).
Where does It grow? Ziziphus Mucronata grows in areas dominated by thorny vegetation in both temperate and tropical climates. It is also found in a wide range of habitats such as woodlands, open scrubland, on rocky koppies, open grasslands, on a variety of soils along streams, nutrient-rich valley bottoms and forest margins. It reaches its largest size on the margins of scrub forest and on deep, alluvial soils near water. Its presence is said to indicate the presence of underground water.
It is not tasty, but you can eat it! Although the fruit of Ziziphus Mucronata is not very tasty, a type of beer can be made from it. The Ovambo people use it to distill ombike, a traditional liquor. The leaves are edible and can be cooked into spinach. During the Second Boer War, the stones were roasted and ground as a substitute for offee. FEB/MAR 2017 | INTERFACE
The leaves and fruit are sought after by birds of many species. In the wild, giraffes are known to be especially fond of the leaves of this tree. Impala often feed on the dead leaves lying under the tree.
Marvellous medicinal uses A decoction of the glutinous roots is commonly administered as a painkiller for all sorts of pains as well as dysentery. A concoction of the bark and the leaves is used for respiratory ailments and other septic swellings of the skin. Pastes of the root and leaves can be applied to treat boils, swollen glands, wounds and sores. Steam baths from the bark are used to purify and improve the complexion. In East Africa, roots are used for treating snake bites. All of the above can be attributed to the peptide alkaloids and antifungal properties isolated from the bark and leaves.
How to grow/plant your own Ziziphus Mucronata The species is very easily raised from seed or cuttings, growing in just about any soil type and withstanding heat and cold equally well. The seed however has poor keeping properties and should be sown fresh. After cleaning the nut, it can be placed between the jaws of a vice or a normal nutcracker and closed gradually until the nut cracks and seed is released. The seeds can then be covered with hot water, allowed to cool, soaked for two days and sown. Seedlings should appear within one to two weeks. Seedlings and small plants need moderate water, full sun and efficient drainage or they will damp off. Even though this plant is said to be one of the most adaptable trees, growing in all types of soil and having the ability to withstand intense heat, cold and drought, the same cannot be said for the seedlings. As with most plants, immunity is acquired with increased stature. Small trees are often available at nurseries selling indigenous plants. While slow-growing (0.3 m or less per annum), it makes a pleasant shade tree and gives life to the garden by luring birds and insects such as butterflies, beetles and bees.

FLOORING - WHAT CAN IT DO TO YOUR INTERIOR SPACE? The advances in technology are increasing at an incredibly rapid rate – as most of us can relate to. This is happening in every aspect of our lives and now it even impacts on the flooring we use for our living spaces. The leader in flooring technology is a local company, Belgotex . Belgotex is a local manufacturer of carpets, vinyl and laminated flooring exporting its products worldwide. As we have experienced with all technology products, they become better and cheaper. This is the same with flooring products. Their vinyl products carry a 10 year warranty and some of their carpets are made from recycled products with manufactured cleaning and anti-allergen features.
12
It doesn’t end there! When your interior designer suggests that your living space needs to be ‘done’ from top to bottom, the bottom starts with the flooring. When they talk about starting with a clean page, they are absolutely correct. The first item they then need to add to their clean sheet is the flooring. Here they have the choice of carpeting, vinyl’s or laminates. This not only adds colour, but texture too. With the base or first layer sorted, the designer can then ‘colour in’ the rest of the picture. Here Belgotex, again, is a leader with the introduction of their Lifestyle Range. They have taken their old trusted and proven products and added new ranges that will compliment them into a range that will cover all your flooring needs. They have then organised them in colour ranges that will meet all personality types. Some say that you are either a ‘blue’ person or a ‘green’ person but they have taken this concept even further. Start by taking the personality test at www.inyourelements.com. This will help you decide which
FEB/MAR 2017 | INTERFACE
element you fall under. They have then organised their colours to compliment your personal likes. This will not only be carpets but also vinyls. It will provide options ranging from pricing and quality. This will make the choice of your base colours easier and more to your personal likes. And once you have the base layer, your decorator can move forward with the rest of your living space. Remember, the right foundation will lead to the right finished product. We at Michele Fortune cc offer the full range of the Lifestyle Products and can help you get your project started off from the right base. We also offer tiling and wooden flooring for a difference in your homes. Please feel free to contact us at 083 461 6976 or 012 667 3787 if you need any help or advice on flooring or visit our showroom at 71 Jean Ave, Doringkloof.

OCCUPATIONAL
HEALTH & SAFETY A GENTLE REMINDER – YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY OF YOUR EMPLOYEES AND CONTRACTORS
20
Another new year, another fresh start with resolutions and plans to enhance your life and the management of your household. You may have used your December holidays to consider the building of a new veranda, the installation of a water reticulation system or for the harvesting of rainwater. You might have finally convinced your spouse to employ a driver to collect each child on time after his/her school and extra mural activities. Not many of you consider your private residence a workplace, however, for your cleaner, au pair, housekeeper, gardener and even contractors, those whom deliver your parcels and service workers, your house is their place of employment and place of work. In a previous article, we dealt with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Act 181 of 1993 (‘the Act’) as amended. It is important to again be reminded of the important prescriptive obligations placed on you in terms hereof. This legislation defines an employer as a person who employs or provides work for a person and remunerates that person or undertakes to remunerate him or her. It is important to note that although labour brokers are excluded, any person whom directs or supervises the work of the labour broker’s workers, is deemed to be an employer in terms of the Act and must protect the labour broker’s workers as their own employees. And all such defined employers are obliged to comply with the Act. An employee is defined by the Act as any person whom is employed or works for an employer, receives remuneration or who works under the direct supervision of an employer. All employees are protected by the Act. In terms of the Act, employers are obliged to fulfil a large number of prescriptive duties and carry by far the most duties under the Act. Some of the more important obligations are highlighted hereunder. A safe workplace must be provided and maintained for the employees, as far as reasonably practical. This includes the identification of the health and safety hazards of the work processes used (for example chemicals used in cleaning or the electrical cord of a lawn mower) and to verify the precautionary measures needed to protect the workers from harm. It is important for employers to ensure that the precautionary measures are put in place and adhered to by the employees. Information, instructions, training and supervision is to be provided to ensure the health and safety of your employees. Most importantly, you are to ensure that your employees are not allowed to execute tasks where the hazards of the task have not been identified and properly controlled.
FEB/MAR 2017 | INTERFACE
Non-employees must also be protected. You, as an employer, are compelled to ensure the health and safety of all people whom will be effected by the employer’s activities. Visitors to the workplace, including contractors, delivery men and service workers, are specifically included. This section also includes your co-residents in the Estate who may live near
or pass near the work activities of your employee. Inform your employees of hazards, safety and protection in a manner that they will understand and remember. Comply with the regulations of the Act. A large number of regulations have been issued on safety, hazardous substances, electrical machinery as well as installations and numerous other topics. Ensure that your employee is duly protected in terms thereof. Should your employee require more than first aid, you are to record the incident and investigate, where after you are to compile a written report, safely kept for record purposes. Should your employee be killed, seriously injured or maimed, you are duty-bound to report such incidents to the Department of Labour. The report will ensure that you, as an employer, are indeed complying with the requirements of the Act. A subcontractor or contractor is also the responsibility of the employer and specifically should you direct or supervise such a worker. Therefore, you can be held liable for injuries to the bricklayer of your building contractor, unless the contractor has a written agreement with you confirming that the contractor will accept responsibility for the health and safety of its own employees and that the contractor will ensure compliance with the Act. Even then, you have to ensure that the contractor carries out these responsibilities. Free personal protective equipment must be provided to your employees and no employee may be charged for such protective equipment. You have to take into account the nature of the hazards and provide and maintain, free of charge, the personal protective equipment in a good and clean condition for use by your employees. Consider gloves for the cleaner, safety glasses for the gardener whilst using the weed eater and protective gloves when pool chemicals are to be administered. Your employees have to ensure that they fulfil their obligations. Section 14 stipulates that employees must take care for the health and safety of themselves and others as well as co-operate with the employer with regards to health and safety. They are to carry out lawful instructions and implement health and safety rules set by the employer. Unsafe or unhealthy situations are to be reported to the employer and dangerous incidents or injury is to be immediately reported to the employer. The Department of Labour have inspectors whom will ensure that employers comply with the labour legislation, including this Act. These inspectors have great powers to investigate during such an inspection. They might inspect, without notice, any relevant part of the premises; question any person, alone or in a group on any matter related to the Act; direct people to avail themselves to be interviewed;
demand records that the inspector is of the opinion need be provided; ask for an explanation of any entry in the documents; inspect anything which is on the premises and remove the item to be examined or analysed; seize anything that might be evidence in a trial; and ask an interpreter, a SAPS member or an assistant to accompany the inspector. Notices of prohibition, contravention or improvement may be issued subsequent to the inspection, should the inspector find unsafe conditions in the workplace. An employer can be prosecuted and convicted of an offence, including but not limited to the obstruction of or refusal to co-operate with an inspector; failure to comply with the Act; making false statements; failure to use safety equipment; attempting to influence proceedings; or the tampering with or misusing safety equipment. Penalties include a fine of up to R100 000,00 (one hundred thousand Rand) or even imprisonment of two years and in some instances, both.
21
Where a worker is killed in the workplace, the Act provides for the death to be investigated by the SAPS as a murder and the National Prosecuting Agency may charge an individual, whether a manager or supervisor, for manslaughter or for murder. It is therefore of utmost importance that, prior to your appointment of any contractor, you agree in writing to the contractor’s responsibility for his employees. Also ensure that any and all unsafe as well as unhealthy situations are monitored by yourself and brought under the contractor’s attention whilst you insist that it is rectified. You are to replace that rickety stepladder your cleaner uses for cleaning the windows and ensure sufficient ventilation when the carpets have been cleaned by the contractors with those magical chemicals that remove all stains. Provide your employees with rubber soled shoes if your tiles are very slippery when washed or wet from the rain and show them how to avoid electrical shock when using your electrically powered lawnmower. Having their health and safety at heart not only ensures your compliance with the Act, but will surely enhance their working conditions for the better. And to misquote a wellknown advertising campaign – happy employee, happy household (read: wife), happy life!

SUPER 8 VS SUPER STUDS On Saturday, 21 January 2017, two of our Saturday schools took each other on. It was the Super 8’s captained by Willie van der Lingen versus the Super Studs captained by Nico Vermeulen. The comradery between the two teams was great to see as well as the spirit of Centurion Country Club members. The spoils and Trophy went to the Super Studs winning the day 6.5 vs 3.5. GNGU DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE On Monday, 23 January 2017, Centurion Country Club hosted the first leg of the GNGU Development League 2017. This league is designed by the Gauteng North Golf Union to promote golf amongst club caddies and staff members who are not in a position to play against other clubs and so they compete against each other. The Centurion Country Club team took full advantage of their home ground advantage and managed to win the day. We wish them luck for the rest of the season - keep up the good golf.

2017 BIRD OF THE YEAR
26 be up to 10cm long and 5cm deep – perfect for a scavenging bird. The black feathers found on the vultures back are lined with brown and their underside ranges from pure white to buff-brown. Synonymous with the vulture species, they have a bald head with colouration ranging from reddish to dull pink. A combination of a colourful head and fleshy folds on the side are distinctive in these birds. A scavenging bird, they feed mostly on animal carcasses which they spot themselves or by watching other vultures. Being such a large bird, they are the most powerful and aggressive of the African vultures which generally results in other vultures ceding a carcass to them. With its large beak it can tear through tough hides and knotty muscles.
BirdLife have announced the Lappet-faced Vulture as the Bird of the Year for 2017. The Lappet-faced Vulture (Torgos Tracheliotos) is an Old World Vulture and lives throughout Africa. Preferring to live in the dry savannah, thornbush, arid plains, deserts with scattered trees and open mountain slopes, they love undisturbed open country with minimal grass cover.
Solitary birds, they do not nest in cohesive colonies as do many smaller vultures. Nesting takes place from May to January and the huge nest is formed by a pile of neat sticks. Often lined with green leaves as well as animal hair and skin, they are almost always placed in the main fork or the top of an Acacia tree. One or two eggs are incubated by both parents for 54 to 56 days and young fledglings only leave the nest at 124 to 135 days old. In October 2015 the Lappet-faced Vulture IUCN status was updated to Endangered making its nomination as Bird of the Year for 2017 all the more important for its awareness.

range, the Lappet-faced Vulture is a huge species. Its bill can

RESIDENT’S BAR REFURBISHMENT At the end of November 2016, Wilma Claassen oversaw the refurbishment of our Resident’s Bar area. The project took 7 days to complete as the whole area received a face lift. The refurbishment has given the Resident’s Bar a warm and welcoming feeling with modern, updated furniture. Round
tables were replaced with square ones making diners feel more comfortable. A new waiter station corner was also built to separate it from the diners, making it more professional. Our Resident’s Bar area can now comfortably seat 60 guests. We look forward to welcoming you.

RECYCLING IN CENTURION GOLF ESTATE As we all know, recycling has become an important part of our everyday lives. The Waste Group has been active in our Estate collecting our green recycling bags for some time now and so we thought it would be interesting to look back at how much recyclable material has been collected within our Estate over the past year.
At BARC, The Waste Group can:
Below is a table depicting the monthly collection (in kilograms) since November 2015:
•
The Waste Group has three state of the art recycling processing plants for the processing and baling of recyclable products in Gauteng, namely at Bon Accord, the Mooiplaats Landfill site and the Chloorkop processing plant. The Bon Accord Recycling Centre (BARC) is the only commercially sustainable material recycling facility in South Africa handling semi-dirty materials.
•
• •
Recycle between 20% and 75% of waste entering the Bon Accord Landfill site. This saves a lot of landfill space; Treat and sort up to 10 000 tonnes of semi dirty waste per month through various cleaning and sorting machines. Hand sorting is also used; Process 4 000 tonnes of recyclable material with our fully-automated baling machine. Export quality bales are produced; and Create about 240 direct and 500 indirect jobs.
The Waste Group’s primary aim is to find sustainable solutions for a greener tomorrow. They are committed to providing holistic, environmentally friendly and economically viable waste management solutions. We hope to increase our recycling collection during 2017.

ELECTRICIAN’S RESPONSIBILITY IN DOING A COC A short information article by Graham Finbow
So you’re selling your house and the Estate Agent says you must get an Electrical Certificate (CoC). You shop around and get the cheapest one. You may also have to get a gas and electric fence CoC. It is the law and it has changed in the last few years.
•
However, just quoting the price of a CoC over the phone is a no-no. Without knowing the size of the property, how old it is, how many distribution boards it has, single or 3 phases and so on, it can be a nightmare. For example “The cheapest guy didn’t ask any questions or even ask to come round”. Bit of an indication that!
•
So you agree on the price, have a test and inspection and the person (or someone else) mends the broken things, labels the DBs, does all the measurements and so on in accordance with the CoC. He puts his name, address, phone number and 2 numbers (Wireman’s license and Department of Labour current registration number IE and GN numbers) on the CoC. You pay the electrician, sell the house and move to wherever, happy as Larry.
•
• •
• •
•
The new owner’s responsibilities: (Again depending of the type of premises.) •
But... the new owner moves in and things don’t work or the house trips! Other than calling your conveyancing lawyer what does that yellow form mean? And, more importantly, what did the electrician do and what should they have done?
Check all the disconnectors work. Stove, geysers, motors, aircooled hand driers, heat pumps, aircons etc. Check that all the DBs are labelled correctly. Check that the wire is the right type and the right size inside and out. Check that all the protection devices are correct and everything has been installed professionally. Check that the incoming power will trip the main switch and the main earth is correct. Check that alternate sources of power are installed correctly and work. Check that at the time the CoC is done the Earth leakage unit worked. Check that all safety signs work and fire barriers are ok.
•
They are responsible for anything plugged into the plugs. This includes lights, gate motors (plugged in), hairdryers; fridges tumble driers, kettles etc. They are also responsible for all fixed appliances. Kitchen stoves, geysers, fixed gate motors, fitted generators, fixed lights, aircons, heat pumps etc.
Here’s what they should have done and what is their responsibility (remember, it’s the law).
Finally...
The electrician’s responsibilities: (This will depend on the type of premises.)
Call the number on the form (the electrician), then the ECB or the ECA if it’s a big job or the Department of Labour.
•
P.S. I will always give free advice to anyone in the area and I do single phase or 3phase CoC’s. Plus all the other electrical stuff too.
• • •
Go round the premises and take photos, draw the rooms, count the plugs and lights and correlate them with the distribution board/s. Test up to and including the plugs, earthing mandatory. Test the bonding for shocks in the shower, kitchen, top of the stove etc. Check all the lights switch on and off. The electrician can agree with the owners to replace the bulbs/fittings or list them in the CoC.
