Feedback report on AGM held on 20 June 2012 The Chairman’s Report included relevant feedback on various portfolios and was positively received and accepted. All resolutions were passed.

Improving the Top Gate was currently listed on the long term plan for FY2016. The Board was requested to investigate the possibility of bringing this forward. Member items •

OME OWNERS Congrats to ASS the Vleipaddas JOHAN ACKERMAN 22/5/1966 – 1/6/2012

I am delighted to be able to say this, but the Vleipaddas have done themselves proud at the end of May. Either they have taken my pleas to heart, or a lot of people have moved into the area, along with boxes etc. They have exceeded their usual amount of bags by over 100%, thereby relegating the Desert Rats to second place and I am ashamed to say that my own Mountain Goats have come in a poor third, with one of their worst showings. I do understand that some people have employed the services of Open Sky, which is fine as they collect everything which is not biodegradable and sort it all out at their depot, but I think that they do not recompense the S.P.C.A. and our local Hospice as Mondi do. I find it no problem at all to just put an orange bag full of paper out once every two weeks. The dates of future collections will be 6 and 20 July; 3, 17 and 31 August; and 14 and 28 September.

REPORT CAPTAIN’s report I have been fortunate over the last couple of weeks to have played golf with a number of members as well as a number of visitors to our club and I am proud to say that the comments as to the condition of our golf course have been extremely positive, and a HUGE thank you must go to Petrie and his team who work tirelessly to ensure we have the best possible course at our disposal. That said, it was disappointing to wake up on the morning of 27 May 2012, to be informed by our green keeping staff that some irresponsible kids had been hard at work desecrating our 16th green. (Pictures attached). Not perturbed, the staff took this in their stride and made the necessary repairs so that we, the golfers, did not even notice the intrusion and could complete our round of golf. What really upsets me is that people think that this form of ‘entertainment’ is acceptable. I would like to remind the culprits and their parents that anyone caught vandalising our golf course will be liable for a hefty fine. Our investigation into this matter is ongoing. We have had a number of annual club tournaments that have recently been completed and while the participation was good, we always strive to ensure that we fill the day with you, our members.

Sometimes the planning of these tournaments coincides with school holidays and public holidays, and we accept that family commitments come first, and as such we will endeavour to plan these better in the future so that we can maximize member participation. July will see the 4th ‘River Runs through It’ competition, a team tournament that sees Irene, Zwartkop and Centurion competing over 3 days of Betterball, Foursomes and Singles. The team includes golfers from our Ladies, Veterans and Men’s sections, and I am sure you will all join me in wishing them the best of luck. At the time of writing, our matchplay championships are well underway, with Foursomes and the Mixed doubles into the 2nd and 3rd rounds, and the draw for the Singles and Doubles has been concluded and is displayed on the notice board. Jannes informs me that we have a record number of entries this year which augers well for the future. I would like to wish all the participants the very best of luck and good golfing. Jim Dent once said “I can airmail the golf ball, but sometimes I don’t put the right address on it”. Until next time – keep swinging!

Winter is well and truly here. Petrie did a good job of keeping our course green for as long as possible but the frost has now taken its toll and the course is now in winter condition, although I have to say still looking really good for this time of year. That winter roll is helping some of us, especially if you hit it straight. I have to confess I battle a bit in the winter as it is very hard to anticipate what is going to happen to the ball when it lands on a hard fairway, I say roll on summer. The Thursday ladies competition has moved to an afternoon field for the winter months (June/ July/August). The decision was made to move the ladies competition to an afternoon field for the winter months as last winter very few ladies arrived to take part in the morning competition due to the mornings being so cold. We have only had two afternoon competitions so far and both have been a great success. I am pleased to say that we have already grown in numbers and got new faces joining us. Any lady wishing to take part has to call the Pro Shop (012 665 9602) and make a booking as limited space is available to the ladies. We meet on the patio at 10h30 sharp. Our tee times are 11h00 and 11h07 on both tee boxes. These are the tee times allocated by the Pro Shop to the ladies but if need be we can book 11h14 but you will have to book a week in advance to secure extra tee times. Thursday afternoon’s in the res bar are proving to be quite festive after our round of golf. The Sanlam Cancer Challenge was played on Saturday 9 June 2012. It was a freezing cold day (the coldest so far this winter) with an icy wind blowing, however the members braved the cold and supported this worthy cause. Ladies A Div was won by Helena Mowatt - 36 points, 2nd was Lettie Le Grange - 29 points, 3rd Elize Visser 27 points. support this day as your money will be going to a good cause. I am asking all our members to please donate a prize and/or a bottle of booze for our raffle. If you have a company that would like to advertise on the day with banners around the club house the cost will be R500 or if you would like to sponsor a hole and are a golf enthusiast you can do so for a cost of R2 000.00 which includes a four ball. Next month will be the 4th year that ‘The River Runs Through’ tournament will be taking place. This is a tournament that is played between Centurion CC, Zwartkop CC and Irene CC. Last year the trophy was won by Zwartkop CC, we hope to win it off them this year. World Cup of Golf tournament in Ireland Two of our father and son teams, Flip and his son Juan Diedericks, and Lefty and his son Avgerinos Piagalis recently entered the World Cup of Golf tournament in Ireland as a 4-ball representing South Africa. The competition format was a 4-ball alliance but the team was split into 2 pairs each day and each pair played a pair from another country. The betterball score of each of the 2 pairs were then added each night, getting to the alliance score of the team. The tournament was played over four days - a different course each day. First was Waterville (links), then Mahony’s Point (grassland), then Dooks (links) and finally Killeen (grasslands). On the final day we played in wind averaging 60 kph, it rained most of the day and it was exceptionally difficult and miserable. The team from Ireland won, South Africa was 2nd, a team from Italy 3rd, a team from Hungary 4th and a team from India was 5th. Next year’s tournament will probably be in China, directly following the professional World Cup - same course, same pin placings. We look forward to our representatives doing us proud again.
