Hennops River update Dear Residents I want to share a few interesting facts with you to keep you up to date: Pollution of Hennops River This is an ongoing issue in our Ward; it affects the river from where it enters our ward all the way through Centurion Lake and on to our downstream neighbour’s. The Intergovernmental committee that was established between the Ekurhuleni, Tshwane and Johannesburg Municipalities had not been meeting regularly which resulted in non-performance. Due to questions asked to the Mayor by Cllr Napier and myself, meetings have been revived and is now led by the Regional Executive Director of Region 4 (Centurion). The first two meetings have taken place and two of the municipalities, Tshwane and Johannesburg did presentations on the way forward and future plans to improve the quality of the river. The Ekurhuleni Municipality did not attend the meeting! Feedback from the Tshwane Municipality: Some parts of the catchment are characterised by both formal and informal (e.g. Ivory Park, Ebony Park and Tembisa) developments along the banks and as a result the following have become more pronounced: • Erosion of river banks due to removal of vegetation. • Burst sewer pipes resulting in sewerage flowing directly into the river. • Illegal dumping of domestic, construction and industrial litter.
Pre frail care Without paraphrasing the words of that great man Martin Luther King, I would like to say “I have an idea” and I need your help to make it work. With the departure of some of our residents to Midstream in order to avail themselves of the frail care facilities there, I had the thought that it would be a pity if those of us who are becoming elderly and maybe in need of a care service, were forced to uproot themselves from the Estate and relocate to somewhere like Midstream. I went to the Intercare Day Hospital at Southdowns and had a conversation with an administrator there, who understood what I wanted and gave me the names of Home Care practitioners. I phoned one of these and explained that I wanted someone like Nurse Gladys Emmanuel, who was a character in the BBC comedy ‘Open all Hours‘, with Ronnie Barker and David Jason. Nurse Gladys was a State Registered Nurse, paid by the State, who visited the people in her area to provide a service to people who were not ambulant. The person to whom I spoke understood exactly what I was suggesting and was most helpful. Obviously this State will not pay but I consider that people who are not able to get up to the Intercare Hospital, for ‘pre frail care’ will be only too happy to pay to have someone come to them. Particularly I think, those who live alone or who
are alone during the day would be grateful for help with bathing and generally moving, also with checking on aspects of health such as blood pressure. Should medical help such as injections be needed the carer would be able to arrange for this. If this plan was to get off the ground, we would need to know how many of our residents would like to avail themselves of it. The basic cost for one of these carers is R175 per 9 hour day and I think this cost, shared between a few people is cheap. The main benefit is that people would not have to leave their homes in which they are so comfortable and their friends on the Estate. If any of the residents are interested in my plan, please let me have your names, emails to pjmiles@telkomsa.net or phone to 012 667 5575, where there is an answering machine should I be out. I would also need your physical addresses as well as the name and address of your GP doctor. When I know how many prospective residents are interested then I can get more details organised. I would imagine that a visit from a carer, depending on the amount of time spent with a patient, would be about one to one and a half hours, and thus cost under R20. The amount of visits would be between you and the carer. I look forward to your feedback. Sue Miles

• F allen trees due to excessive erosion of the river banks associated with the high speeds of water caused by artificial channelling. • T he destruction of the Olifantsfontein wetland which acted as natural litter trap, silt trap and water purification system. Intervention by the Department of Water Affairs to enforce compliance by upstream parties including Ekurhuleni and City of Jo`burg municipalities. The solution includes but is not limited to: • C onstruction of a series of silt traps, litter traps and flood attenuation structures upstream and downstream of the lake. • Development of a series of wetlands upstream of the lake. • C onstructing a by-pass ‘natural channel’ on the side of the existing park and establishing the current lake as a semi closed water body system. • D evelopment of a series of wetlands downstream of the lake where mini conservation sites could be established. • D evelopment of the main wetland to be at the Zwartkop Nature Reserve. If something should happen and you can’t speak for yourself, it’s easy to identify you. All it takes is one minute for someone to leave a gate or door open by accident and your pet can get out and lost. Not being able to speak for themselves, they can wander far away from home and could end up at a shelter or even worse, get hurt. It’s a rule of the Estate that ALL pets MUST wear proper identification. This enables the guards/CHOA to immediately contact the owner to re-unite them with their lost Dog or Cat without the burden of taking the animal to a kennel and the costs involved with that. The Centurion Home Owners Association has endorsed Embroidered ID Collars at the Annual General Meeting as an effective means of pet identification. To Order an Embroidered Pet Identification Collar with your Cat or Dog’s name and your details, contact me at carla_h@mweb.co.za or 082 469 1662.
Dog owners take note Dog owners are reminded that all dogs need to be on a leash when walking within the Estate and that all owners are to ensure that no mess is left behind when doing so – a poop scoop is a necessity.
Tuks Alumni function at the Centurion Residential Estate and cc Being a resident of the Estate, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria recently invited all TUKS Alumni and their partners to an evening of remembrance at the club house. Mr Pierre Lombard (past Chairman) gave an interesting and lively review of Prof. de la Rey’s CV as she progressed from the University of Natal via Ikeys where she obtained a PhD in Psychology up to her present position as Principal of University of Pretoria. After dinner Prof. de la Rey described how the university is currently positioning itself and elaborated on some recent successes. It transpired that some 62 000 students are currently enrolled at Tuks of which 46 000 are contact students with 24 000 currently doing post graduate studies. Diversity has increased to the point where 47% of the contact students are now black. She highlighted areas such as having the best engineering school in South Africa, the university’s international footprint (which includes 4 200 international students from 107 countries) together with various prestigious facilities like the recent addition of the Tutu building as well as the upgrading of the Aula and the Engineering faculty. Some of the long term goals focus on being a
leading research intensive university in Africa and to strengthen the university’s international profile and visibility. The university’s High Performance Centre and TuksGolf Academy contribute to South African sport in the development and training of future sport stars. Messrs’ Sutcliffe and Steyn both gave a glimpse of the passion, capability and results delivered by these prestigious institutions such as a number of medals during last year’s Olympics. Close to the heart of Centurion’s Golf Club is its long standing relationship with the TuksGolf Academy. One of the Academy’s three satellite training facilities is based at the Centurion CC. Since 2006 the TuksGolf Academy delivered 8 senior national no.1 golfers (men and women) with the majority of them making use of the facilities at the CCC. The current three top ranked players in South Africa are all being trained by TuksGolf.
Tuks alumni function at the Centurion Residential Estate and cc
Some 60 residents attended the evening which was concluded by some networking and new friendships that were found. We are privileged to have Prof. de la Rey as a resident who is not only very successful at the university with her charm and experience, but also in our own community.

Winter gardening tips One of the most frequently asked questions about winter gardening is whether extreme temperature swings will harm or kill ornamental plants. In general, the answer is "no." Plants have a genetic ability to sense atmospheric changes and adjust in advance of them. While warm winter temperatures do induce growth and flowering, cool temperatures slow down the growth rate and race to flower. The time when plants are most vulnerable is in the spring when periods of warm weather increase and suddenly there are several nights with temperatures well below freezing. While plants generally will survive hard winter freezes, blossoms on winter-flowering plants such as camellias and plum and cherry trees aren't so lucky. When buds are swollen and blooming is imminent, a hard freeze can damage the buds. The damage can remain hidden until the flowers open and then show up in the form of brown spots on the petals. In some cases, the entire bud may freeze and drop off the plant. Fully open flowers will either turn a sickly brown or fall to the ground. To avoid the disappointment of unsightly flowers or losing them altogether, cover plants that have buds and open flowers with an old sheet or a commercially available frost cover. (Don't use plastic: It can quickly create an oven effect when the sun shines on it.) You can also trick Mother Nature by cutting the buds in advance of the freeze and bringing them indoors to let them open in the house. If a freeze is predicted before buds have been set, there is no need to add a protective covering. Here's a list of "dos" and "don'ts" to help your plants survive hard freezes and to help you enjoy the blooms on the many beautiful winter-flowering plants. Do - Continue to plant, as long as the ground is soft enough to dig a hole. - Add mulch. It will help keep root temperatures stable. - Add compost. It supplies organic nutrients to the soil (but no more than three inches thick). - Water. Watering in advance of a predicted freeze helps plants, especially potted plants and annuals, make it through a hard freeze because it allows plants to take up moisture before the ground is frozen and prevents water from reaching the root zone. Be sure to hydrate above-ground shoots as well as the roots. - Give container plants extra protection. Cover with frost cloth or other heat retentive blankets and move pots and other containers close to the foundation of the house or under eaves. - Bring in houseplants. Spray both sides of the leaves with an insecticidal soap and water thoroughly with an insecticidal drench that is safe for people and pets to kill hitchhiking critters. Position plants indoors where they will receive indirect, bright light for at least five hours a day. Be sure to keep them away from drafts and heating vents and water sparingly because most houseplants do not actively grow in winter. Don't - Fertilize. This is a time for garden plants to go dormant and rest. Forcing them to start new growth before the ground warms in the spring not only interrupts this period when they are rejuvenating but ice storms and temperatures below freezing or even hard frosts will kill tender new growth. - Skip your regular watering cycle. During dry periods when the ground isn't frozen or covered with snow, a once-aweek deep watering is beneficial. New plantings especially need to be watered in. - Worry about bulb foliage. Leaves of daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs should be just fine during temperature dips. Happy winter gardening.

REPORT CAPTAIN’s report I am sure that many of you have noticed the flyers that are around the clubhouse at the moment promoting the ‘Captain’s Alliance’. Well the good news is that we have a sponsor on board and the day will officially be known as the ‘Toits Captains Challenge’. Charl and the team from Toits Butchery have agreed to step into the title sponsors role and we are looking forward to hosting the first day on 27 July 2013. For all those interested, it will be a shotgun start and booking will open as per usual (2 weeks in advance). As this is the first day that we are trying something new, the field will be restricted to the afternoon field only. The prize giving will take place immediately after play in the members bar. (Please note that due to the nature of the prizes, they will be attendance prizes only). On a sad note, Igor has left Centurion after many years of dedicated service. He has been offered the Green Keeper’s position at Millvale Golf Estate in Koster. Our loss is certainly their gain and I am sure that you will all join me in wishing Igor everything of the best and thanking him for his efforts in making our course the best course in Pretoria. Wednesday, 26 June 2013 was our Annual Awards Evening where we recognised those individuals who have contributed towards the club in various ways. This was a special evening for Oom Jan Schutte who was awarded Honorary Life Membership to Centurion Country Club. This was bestowed on him as a result of the tremendous efforts and time dedicated to our club over the years. I am sure you will all agree that it is well deserved.
Piagalis and Johan Bronkhorst. Congratulations to all of the award winners on the night, your participation and dedication to the club is much appreciated. Lastly, for a bit of fun, if you can identify who is wearing these golf shoes, let Hans know and the first correct guess will win a sleeve of Golf Balls (provided you did not attend the function). All will be revealed in the next Captain’s report.

y REPORT dCAPTAIN’s report a L What can I say but “Wow”! Brandon Stone made an amazing entry onto the Pro circuit, having only turned pro the first week in June 2013, when he went off to Munich to play in the BMW International Open where he ended up tied 10th. What a great way to start his professional career. The tournament was won by our good old South African boy, Ernie Els. Darren Fichardt finished tied 7th. So all in all, a great tournament for our South African boys and how proud are we to have two of the top 10 finishers as residents and members of Centurion Country Club. Our golf course has played host to a number of tournaments of late. As I write this article the IGT Winter Pro Tournament is taking place. On Sunday, 30 June 2013 the ladies GNGU Women’s Open stroke play starts followed by the GNGU ladies match play. SA Kids will also be hosting a tournament here very shortly. That must say something about how good our course is. The ladies Thursday competition (Early Birds) has moved tee times for the winter months, we now play in the afternoon field (perhaps we should change our name to ‘late starters’ during the winter!) if you would like to join the ladies on a Thursday please drop me an e-mail (hayley.mendes@gmail.com) so I can put your name down, as we only have tee times for 16 players.
please contact me on my e-mail address hayley.mendes@gmail.com or 083 660 5499. All donations will be greatly appreciated. You can drop donations off at Nicola’s office - if she is not there please hand them in at the Pro Shop. The ‘River Runs Through’ a tournament that is played every year between ourselves, Irene CC and Zwartkop CC is taking place from 12 till 14 July 2013. Results of this tournament in next month’s report.
I would just like to put a friendly reminder out to all our members that ‘SLOW PLAY’ although very annoying to all of us, must please be dealt with via the Pro Shop and the course marshals. Please don’t take matters into your own hands as it just causes unnecessary unpleasantness. Till next month Hayley Mendes
The Ladies Charity Day is only a matter of weeks away. It is taking place on 9 August 2013 (Women’s Day). I am urging all our members to please open your hearts and help out by donating either a prize for the prize giving and/or a bottle of booze for the booze hamper that will be raffled off on the day. The money will be going to a very worthy cause it is going to a charity that cares for abused woman and children. dream could become a reality.
The new Management Committee has been appointed and there are several exciting plans afoot to uphold the high standard already established at our club. We want residents to make use of the club house – we have uncapped WiFi throughout the club and the facilities are constantly being upgraded with new foods introduced onto the menu. Delicious meals are served on the patio and the Sunday lunches are of the highest standard compared to any restaurant in Gauteng.
The Club Management together with our caterer, Amarille Vermooten-Vorster are organising two charity events which will take place at the club house and where the income for these events will be donated to CANSA for further research. The first event will take place on 5 September 2013 with a Country & Western evening featuring Clive Bruce and Lance James. Tickets for this event are R150p/p which includes dinner. The second event will take place on 28 September 2013 which will be a morning function – a make-over day with Martinus Höll. Tickets for this will cost R250p/p and will include a brunch.
We will soon be painting the building inside and out. We also have plans to enlarge the member’s section and to introduce a pizza oven. One of the wishes on our wish list is to acquire a piano and create a piano lounge at the club. CANSA are organising a Relay for Life on Saturday, 5 October 2013. The Relay for Life will include a list of residents who have survived cancer, or have been diagnosed with cancer or are carers for cancer patients. These names can be given to Amarille, our caterer and a VIP list will
be compiled of these names for this organisation. Further particulars will be relayed to all residents as well as details of any events taking place to raise money for cancer research. Please be encouraged to make use of the facilities at our beautiful club house, enjoy the family atmosphere, a great meal and meet with friends who care. Birding: Five steps to get started 1. Get the book It is crucial for enjoyable birding to have a good field guide at your disposal. There are books with photographs and others with drawings of birds - Birdrunner uses a field guide with drawings as her basic reference, with a photographic guide as a backup when there is some uncertainty in identifying the bird.
2. Get the “tools” A set of binoculars is very important, as many birds you see will be some distance away - whether it is on the ground, in the air, in a tree, on a telephone pole or on water, you will not always be able to get close enough to see identifying characteristics with the naked eye. A camera is not a must, but it sure makes life easier. You can zoom in afterwards to see smaller detail, or even ask a friend his/her opinion on what bird it is!
3. Make the rules Birders in general place a high value on ethical conduct. Be responsible! Don’t damage the environment or harm the bird trying to add another tick to your list! And then the fun part: decide how you will keep count of the birds that you meet: only based on sight (like the Birdrunner); all birds heard or seen; only if you and your spouse both see the bird together; whether you have to identify it yourself or if you can accept identification by a more experienced birder. There are also fun ways to keep track of the birds you see - you can keep record at the back of some of the field guides, or you can try other methods like placing a sticker in the book next to each bird you want to “tick”.
Birdrunner Competition This is activity 3 of 3 of the competition that started in May. All Interface readers are still welcome to enter. One lucky winner will receive a copy of the book Newman’s Birds of Southern Africa (or the Afrikaans edition, if preferred).
Activity 3 of 3: Word scramble Below you will find the names of ten birds (English), but with the letters of each name scrambled (for instance, a “hggnalui veod” will be a “laughing dove” when unscrambled).
How to enter: Take part in all three Birdrunner activities featured in the Interface Magazine between May and July 2013. Each activity earns you points on the basis indicated for the specific activity and the reader with the most points at the end of the competition will be awarded the prize. Each individual activity’s description will indicate how the specific activity’s entry should be submitted. You don’t have to have everything correct to be the winner – you simply have to earn the most points over the competition period.
Step 1: Unscramble the letters of each of the ten names to find the English names of ten birds of the Southern African Region. The first letter of each name is already in its correct position to give you a hint:
1. Tywna aegel 2. Tkihc-libeld vaewre 3. Gary’s karl 4. Daarma rent 5. Ceap nubnigt
Closing date:

The closing date for all activities has been extended to 15 August 2013 and the winner will subsequently only be announced in the September 2013 Interface. Important: If you have missed out on Activity 1 or Activity 2, you can still go back to the May and June editions of the Interface for these activities. Your outputs for each of the three activities should reach the Birdrunner before/on 15 August 2013.

Activity 3: Birdrunner Quiz
Use the unscrambled names from step 1 to find the Afrikaans name of another (only one) Southern African bird, by joining together the following letters:
4. Learn from others
Submission options
1. Letter 3 of name 1.
Identifying birds may be quite difficult in the beginning, so it is advisable to go on a field trip with a more experienced birder. Or start off by simply inviting one for coffee and let him/her help you with identifying the birds in your garden. Other birders may have special tips on what to look for, how to associate a certain call with the correct bird, etc.
1.
2. Letter 3 of name 2.
5. Practice, practice, practice Don’t give up if you struggle at first. When you start off this exciting new hobby, all birds - or at least many of them may appear so similar that you may wonder whether you will ever be able to distinguish one from another. Don’t give up! It comes with practice - take the field guide with you to as many places as possible (even if you go on a business trip to another city) and try to identify the birds you find along the way, at the hotel, in the garden, at the dam - wherever. The Centurion Golf Estate hosts a variety of birds and a simple walk to and from the clubhouse could be a very successful birding expedition if you learn something from it! The Birdrunner will discuss the above steps in more detail in future editions of the Interface, so watch this space. Remember that you can also use the contact details provided for competition purposes to contact the Birdrunner with interesting sightings in the Estate or elsewhere, ideas and suggestions, questions, etc.
Mail your answers to:
Birdrunner SA P.O. Box 66596 Highveld 0169
3. Letter 6 of name 3.
(If you use the postal address, please provide your full contact details.)
5. Letter 4 of name 5.
2. Follow Birdrunner on Twitter and tweet your answers to @ Birdrunner_SA (If you use Twitter, please also send Birdrunner a direct message with your details.) 3. Sms your answers to 082 468 0357. Start your sms with “Birdrunner”, followed by your name and answers. Separate your answers by using commas. (If you sms, please make sure you sms from a number that Birdrunner would be able to get hold of you if required for the competition.)
4. Letter 1 of name 4. 6. Letter 1 of name 6. 7. Letter 6 of name 7. 8. Letter 5 of name 8. 9. Letter 3 of name 9. 10. Letter 3 of name 10. Step 3: Sms/tweet/post the Afrikaans name of the bird to be found in step 2 above to Birdrunner SA (with your details, as explained in the “submission options” above).

Remember your electric fence compliance certificate! In terms of the Electrical Machinery Regulations, 2011 an additional compliance certificate is needed to effect transfer of immovable property if an electric fence system is installed on the property to be sold. This certificate provides proof that the installed electric fence system complies with the legal requirements for such as system. An electric fence system is any electrified barrier consisting of one or more bare conductors erected to prevent the trespass of persons or animals, which system delivers a non-lethal charge of electrical energy to an electric fence. In the event that an electric fence system has been erected on property to be sold, the new regulations must be complied with in order to ensure that the property can be transferred. An important date to remember is 1 December 2012 as any property that is sold, or otherwise changes ownership after this date, and which has an electric fence system, will require an electric fence system compliance certificate. This
will include any property that was sold before 1 December 2012, but which has not yet been registered in the name of the purchaser. This certificate is in addition to the familiar electrical compliance certificate and may only be issued by a registered person who is in possession of a Certificate of Competence.
