ENERY SAVING TIPS
You could save up to 10% on your electricity bill without spending a cent – follow this checklist:
8 HOT WATER: • Turn down the thermostat on your electrical element geyser to 60°C • Don’t use hot water for tasks you can accomplish with cold water - such as rinsing dishes and vegetables • Only use hot water for cleaning tasks that really need it, like washing your hands FRIDGE/FREEZER: • Set your fridge to 3°C – any lower and it will use more electricity than necessary • Make sure the seals of your fridge and freezer doors are intact • Don’t open the door unnecessarily • Place your fridge somewhere cool - away from sun-facing walls and windows, and as far as possible from the stove • Defrost your chest freezer twice a year; upright freezers should be defrosted three times a year • Don’t overfill your fridge or freezer; only use 90% of its capacity LIVING ROOMS AND BEDROOMS: • Always switch off lights in unoccupied rooms • Unplug all appliances you are not using • Don’t leave computers, TVs and DVD players on standby – if you do, these appliances use up to 50% of the power they normally use • Keep curtains and blinds open during the day to optimise natural light and postpone switching on artificial lighting until it gets dark JUNE 2015 | INTERFACE
KEEP YOUR SWIMMING POOL SAFE
A cool, blue, pristine swimming pool has always been, and still is, an asset of a home to which many owners aspire and there is little doubt that a well maintained swimming pool in the right setting can enhance the look, atmosphere and, always important, the value of any home. It is, therefore, not strange that swimming pool owners invest as much effort and capital in the swimming pool as in the rest of the surrounding landscaped garden. And there is much effort made by pool owners to keep up with the development of any technology that could help them to ensure that sought after Mediterranean blue-look.
corporate and/or any owner of the exclusive property where a swimming pool has been built.
It should also be remembered that, long before the eager little boys and girls could romp and run around the pool before jumping or diving into its cool refreshing water, an engineer spent even more time and effort to plot the graphs and make the calculations that would guarantee a pool that would last. After that a crew of hard working builders put in some back breaking work to ensure that the pool adheres to the building regulations.
When not in use a swimming pool must be covered by a swimming pool net or cover which must adhere to standards stipulated by the municipality. Consideration is given to covers that are actually fitted with an alarm alerting weight on the net or the removal or attempted removal thereof prior to disengaging the alarm.
The news media again made us aware of the accidents that all too often happen in our swimming pools, regularly involving small and young children on the threshold of their lives during the past summer. Many of these incidents are fatal and cause inestimable hardship to the parents and other family left behind. The hard fact is that a large number of residential swimming pools really have little, or no, security features. Some, simply because these safety features are not aesthetically pleasing. Others because the safety features were never installed due to cost factors and most because safety was simply not considered – with all the children grown and able to swim, the original house owner did not even consider the potential risk to the grandchildren, the children or visitors nor those of the successor in right and title of the property. Traditionally there was very little input from government or local authorities dealing with this lack of security around our swimming pools. The national building regulations give some attention to this subject, but these regulations are mostly unknown to the public. Also, the building regulations have their focus on members of the building industry with the intention that the building industry should duly advise their clients of the requirements and ensure compliance. However, if some local municipalities, especially the City of Johannesburg, are to be believed this is about to change. In 2013 the City of Johannesburg published its fourth draft regulations with the aim to more effectively regulate the standard of security of swimming pools within the borders of the city. Not only do the regulations prescribe physical steps to be taken by owners of swimming pools – it also proposes harsh penalties if these provisions are not complied with. The regulations will be applicable to all owners of free standing houses with swimming pools. In the case of sectional title developments, it will be applicable to the body
The draft regulations provide that each outside swimming pool must be surrounded by a wall or fence with a door or gate which has a self-locking device. The wall must be of concrete or bricks and a fence must be of a material preapproved by the municipality. The wall or fence must be at least 1.2 meters high and must have no outstanding features that can provide a foot hold to children.
The drafted regulations further have proposed the stipulation that no child under the age of seven years shall enter the fenced area around a swimming pool without being accompanied by a person older than eighteen years. It is intended that every owner of a swimming pool who does not comply with the regulations will be issued with a noncompliance notice. Failure to react positively on such a notice may lead to the payment of a substantial fine or, in more serious cases, the imposing of a prison sentence.
9
It is envisaged that the regulations will contain a provision that each owner of a house with a swimming pool will have to obtain a certificate of compliance with the swimming pool safety regulations. Without such a certificate it will not be possible for the owner to sell and transfer his house. In view of the fact that non compliance with the regulations will be deemed to be negligent behavior on the part of the owner, it is foreseen that providers of public insurance will not consider themselves bound by insurance policies in cases where an owner failed to comply with the regulations. If the City of Johannesburg puts its regulations into operation it would be reasonable to expect that other local authorities, especially the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, will follow suit soon thereafter. Home owners are therefore advised to take note of these drafted regulations and to prepare to comply with them when they become operative. Even without such regulations, the owner of a swimming pool is and should be well aware of the lurking danger inherent to the body of water in the garden. Too many swimming pool owners had to learn of the lack of basic pool safety by losing a child or other loved one. And this lesson needs not to be repeated so often before you attend to the safety of your swimming pool. Accidents happen in the blink of an eye, the turn of the back, the momentarily lack of alertness. Rather be safe than sorry and to paraphrase William Shakespeare in Macbeth, “Once some things are done, it cannot be undone”. WINTER PRUNING ROSES AND HYDRANGEAS
Pruning concentrates the plant’s energy into producing strong new growth. So we prune roses to keep the plant looking great, influence the shape or size, to encourage new growth and flowers, or to rejuvenate tired plants. Remove all dead, diseased or damaged parts of the plant, along with any stems that cross. Some rose growers cut back all branches to a metre in height, while others prefer the more conventional method of trimming back, whilst removing old and diseased wood. Branches that cross or rub against each other should be removed, as should any stems thinner than a pencil in thickness, as these are never going to produce strong growth or flowers. Climbing roses should have branches trained as horizontally as possible to encourage flowering. Inward growing branches are also removed to allow light and air to reach all parts of the bush. Cuts should be made smoothly and cleanly at a slant just above an outward facing bud. Cutting too near the bud will damage the growing point and too far above could result in a place for insects and disease to enter. To avoid tearing bark when pruning large branches, first make a small cut on the underside of the branch, then make the final cut from the top. Hydrangeas (or Christmas roses, as they are affectionately referred to in South Africa) are native to Asia and America, but they grow well in almost all parts of South Africa. The word hydrangea comes from the Greek “hydr-” (meaning water) and “angeion” (meaning jar or vessel) – so, roughly translated hydrangea means “water container”, which is possibly a reference to the large amount of water that this plant requires in order to thrive. Most hydrangeas flower during summer and autumn, and fare best when planted in partial shade Hydrangeas should be pruned twice a year – in winter and in summer, just after they have finished flowering. The winter pruning (ideally in June or July) is the harder pruning session. Remove all the dead, old or weak stems. Prune all the remaining stems back to just above a cluster of buds. The idea is to channel all the plant’s energy into producing new flowers. After pruning, feed with hydrangea food and mulch the soil well (an acidic mulch like pine needles works well if you are aiming for blue flowers).

LADIES CAPTAIN REPORT
You may have noticed my silence the last few months, regretfully due to an operation I had to have done. This has kept me off the golf course for a few months and I now have to frustratingly drive on a cart along with our Thursday ladies instead of playing the game I love so much. But soon I will challenge the driving range again and will be joining our ladies golfers in the not too a distant future. Our lovely ladies that participated in this year’s Thursday ladies league had a bit of a challenge with their games that started in February and ended at the end of April. But hopefully we will take the lead again in next year’s league. However, a sincere thanks to all that participated in the Thursday Ladies League and selflessly made themselves available every week. Thanks go out to Joey du Toit, Sue Smith, Hayley Mendes, Debra Arroyo, Tanya Hechter, Helga Engeling and Wilma de Wet. Our Saturday Ladies League Team kicked off on 9 May 2015. I trust that this team will do well. On 7 May 2015 Hayley Mendes and Annemarie van der
Bijl played for the Eclectic Medal Trophy and congratulations must go to Hayley who shot a brilliant 69 Nett. Well done! At this year’s Golf AGM meeting that took place on 29 April 2015, the new Golf committee was elected. Congratulations to our new Men’s Captain, Jacques Wickens and welcome aboard to Bossie Boshoff, Gerhard van Niekerk and Johan Bronkhorst who have joined this committee. Shadi Mahuba was duly elected unopposed to the ladies section but had to later regretfully withdraw her election due to personal reasons. We will hopefully have other candidates available in the next month or two that will be able to commit their time and make themselves available to join the committee. Please contact me should you be interested. By the time you’re reading this, we would have already hosted our Centurion Ladies Open on 28 May 2015 which I’m sure will be a huge success. I hope to see you all at our Weekly Early Birds ladies games which have moved to 11am for the winter months. Until next month Tilla

SINCLAIR TRIUMPHS AT NOMADS SA BOYS U-19 CHAMPS
but Sinclair was in the driver’s seat after that with four successive birdies from the 25th hole. Sinclair lost a hole to a bogey at 29 and Cooper birdied the 30th to cut Sinclair’s lead to 1 hole, but the Centurion junior matched Cooper’s birdie at the 32nd hole to protect his 1-up lead. Sinclair closed with four successive pars to seal a 2-up victory when Cooper signed off with a bogey-birdie-bogey finish. “This is without a doubt the biggest achievement of my career and I have to acknowledge a few people who prepared me for this moment,” said Sinclair. “My coach Graham Francis gave me some swing tips on the phone on Thursday that turned the tournament around for me and CJ du Plessis from the GFG Academy also called me and gave me some mental tips that really helped. “I also want to thank Johan Struwig, our Gauteng North U-23 manager, who gave JP and me a lot of support during the tournament.” Sinclair believes he has turned a big corner with this breakthrough.
20 Rosswell Sinclair defeated fellow Gauteng North junior JP Cooper 2-up in a thrilling 36-hole final to lift the Nomads SA Boys U-19 Match Play Championship title at Polokwane Golf Club on Saturday. The 17-year-old Centurion golfer had some anxiety going into the final round against his former Nomads SA Boys U-19 Inter-Provincial team-mate, but the pair decided to put their friendship on ice until they reached the finishing line. “It’s was kind of weird for us to compete against each other, because we will line up for Gauteng North in the SA U-23 Inter-Provincial on Monday and we’ll be foursomes partners,” Sinclair said. “We both just decided to get on with it and let chips fall and it turned out to be one of the best matches I’ve ever played in this kind of championship. We were both very competitive throughout, but it was nice to still chat to each other and to appreciate each other’s good shots.” Sinclair led 2-up through 12 holes after mixing birdies at the third and seventh with a double bogey at the sixth and an eagle at the par-five 12th. He dropped a shot at the par-four 13th that opened the door for Wingate Park’s Cooper, who ended a run of 11 successive pars with a birdie at the 12th and surged ahead with back-to-back birdies at 14 and 15. Cooper bogeyed the par-three 16th, though, and Sinclair birdied the 17th to go 1-up. He kept the edge going into the second trip around the Limpopo layout after both players parred 18. Cooper levelled the match with an eagle-three at the 20th hole, and the pair traded birdies over the next three holes with Sinclair birdies 21 and 23 either side of Coppers fain at 22. Both players parred the 24th hole, JUNE 2015 | INTERFACE
“I’m absolutely over the moon with this victory. I’ve never really contended in these events before, but I believe that competing against the pros on the IGT Tour over the last nine months has given me a lot of self-confidence. “I never doubted myself in the final and I held my focus. Even when JP hit two incredible shots to set up eagles at the ninth and 14th holes in the first round, I stayed in the moment. I laid up at both holes and held my nerve. I hit a great shot from 90 meters at the ninth and another good approach from 60 meters at the 14th and birdied both times to stay in contention.” Both finalists were full of praise for the greens staff at Polokwane Golf Club. “The greens staff did an incredibly job to prepare the course for us this week,” Sinclair said. “The fairways were fantastic and the greens improved every day. JP and I both thought that the greens rolled beautifully in the final round and added to the challenge. “We both feel really well prepared for the SA U-23 InterProvincial and we are excited to team up to bring another trophy home to Gauteng North.”
News just in… Ross recently participated in the U/23 IPT where he played in a team and was awarded the MVP (Most Valued Player). He furthermore also participated in the U/17 Junior IPT and, again, was the MVP as well as in the IPT Challenge which is with the adults and he never lost a game. On Sunday, 17 May 2015 the competition heated up with the Three Jacks and a Jill annual tournament. We had a satisfactory turn out with 10 teams taking part. Camaraderie was running strong between the rival teams adding to a fabulous atmosphere on the course and afterwards on the patio. Congratulations to this years’ winners J Bronkhorst, M Bronkhorst, J Wickens and C Campbell. The TaylorMade golf van came out on Saturday to give our members a small taste of their exceptional equipment. With specialised advice and using the latest equipment such as flightscope, they were able to fit those interested to their exact needs. Thanks to those who showed an interest and supported Jannes Sik’s golf shop on the day. For those who missed it, all the demo clubs are in stock and available for fitting!
