HOME OWNE feedback on resident

satisfaction survey

During February 2012 residents (owners, tenants and off-site owners) were invited to participate in a satisfaction survey of the Centurion Residential Estate and Country Club. A total of 132 members participated over a 14 day period. Several comments were received that will be attended to. The overall reaction of all respondents to all the questions indicated that 81% placed their votes in the category of satisfied to very satisfied, good to very good or positive to very positive.

Use of traffic circles inside the Estate Some of the comments returned as part of the recent resident satisfaction survey indicated an element of uncertainty as to who has the right of way at our internal traffic circles. The roads on our Estate are public municipal roads and all municipal by-laws and standard traffic rules apply. All the circles on the Estate are marked with the R2.2 sign classifying them as mini-circles (Refer to http://www.circles. org.za/ for more information)

Question 6 Your overall level of satisfaction with the CHOA’s efforts to communicate with the residents through newsletters, notices and e-mails.

The yield at mini circle regulatory sign R2.2 imposes a mandatory requirement that drivers of vehicles approaching a mini circle shall yield right of way to any vehicle which will cross any YIELD LINE marking at such junction before them, and which, in the normal course of events, will cross the path of such driver’s vehicles, and that the driver shall move in a clockwise direction in such junction and attempt not to encroach on the mini circle.

In Plain English Essentially what this means is that the first vehicle to cross the line has the right of way. This works in much the same way as a four way stop.

Who has the right of way? Example

In the example Vehicle 2 has the right of way even though Vehicle 1 is to the right. This is because Vehicle 2 has crossed the line first. The larger traffic circle or roundabout are marked with the R137 sign

Roundabout These are only found outside the Estate. The roundabout regulatory sign R137 imposes a mandatory requirement that drivers entering a roundabout shall turn to the left and shall travel round the roundabout in a clockwise direction, and it imposes a mandatory requirement that drivers entering a roundabout shall yield right-of-way to traffic approaching from the right, within the roundabout, where such traffic is so close as to constitute a danger or potential danger. After our first committee meeting on 8 February 2012, we welcome Hamish McKee, a very involved member of the club, who has joined Rodney, Errol, Hayley, Jannes and myself in anticipation of the changes that will be inevitable at the up and coming elections. Please, if you have a long term interest in our club and want to assist taking it to a new level, consider making yourself available since I will only be available in a supporting capacity. There are also positions available on the ladies side since Marianne will be permanently in the Cape and Hayley will need some support to continue her sterling work. Let’s take golf at Centurion to another level.

The appearance of the course is very important and sadly the weeding programme has not been seen as a priority, even though the weeds are more evident after the welcome rains. Together with the grounds committee, I hope to clear up the weeds on the course sooner than later.

Club Champs and League 2012 are in full swing and I wish all who participating the very best. I always enjoy the articles in the golf mags, however, a comment by Dale Hayes in a recent edition was food for thought: “If you manipulate your Handicap then it’s the same as placing in the rough”. The slightest form of manipulation is wrong and I hope that with the implementation of the new handicap system less of this practise will become evident. With the greens recovering from the hollow-tining they have been found to be slow, however, while they recover please consider placing the flag as opposed to dropping it onto the green. This will

Happy New Year fresh from the Cape. I arrived on 13 February 2012 to finalise a couple of loose ends. How wonderful to be ‘home’ again. I have joined the Paarl Golf Club but think it will take time to make it my new home club.

Ladies Golf News I would just like to inform all the lady members that we have changed the ladies weekday competition back to a Thursday. It just made sense as this is our official club day. I am pleased to say that the ladies Thursday competition is growing from strength to strength. We have quite a number of birdies hanging on our ‘Birdie Tree’, you will notice our Baobab ‘Birdie Tree’ in the ladies locker room. The Eclectic is up and running, and this has added a little bit of fun to our Medal day competition. The results are posted monthly on the ladies notice board in the locker room, so do stop and check how you are doing when passing by the notice board. Debbie von Plato underwent surgery a couple of weeks ago, I am pleased to say she is recovering well. We look forward to seeing Debbie back on the golf course soon. Last month we said farewell to one of our lady members, Karin Petterson. Karin moved into Centurion Golf Estate about 4 years ago from Sweden and she only took up golf when she arrived here in Centurion. She was active in the ladies section for the last 2 years of her stay in South Africa. We all became very fond of Karin, she brought a lot of fun onto the golf course. She became very well known for her hip flask. Each time a lady in her four-ball got a birdie, out came the hip flask and we all had a sip of whisky. The tradition has not left the ladies section, as Dee Meredith as well as Karen Robinson now both have hip flasks (Karin bought them for them!). We wish Karin and Johan well in their new posting in Kenya. Sue Smith will be our league coordinator for this coming season. Any lady interested in playing league please forward all your details to Sue so she can start getting the teams sorted. A good walk spoiled…not in 2012!! Many of us turn to New Year’s resolutions year in and year out with the hope of actually achieving what we dream about. I want to challenge you to take on a SMARTer approach to your game this year. After deciding what you want to achieve with your overall game, (this should include fitness, nutrition and mental preparation) follow these easy steps to ensure that you stick to your game plan. SMART stands for the following: Specific: the more specific your goal the better! Deciding to improve your short game is already a step in the right direction. It is important to narrow it down as there are multiple aspects to short game: putting, chipping, bunkers, pitching and scrambling.

Measurable: if you cannot measure your progress, how do you know you have improved? All goals must be measurable. Keeping record of both competition and social rounds will be valuable to chart your level of performance and progress. Achievable: this is the most difficult element of goal setting. A goal that is too easy to achieve is worthless. A goal that is unrealistic will do more harm than good. You need to set a target that will stretch your capabilities but which is still achievable! Realistic: in order for any goal to be achievable it must also be realistic. I also like to think of the R in SMART as Reward. It is important to acknowledge your efforts with a reward to keep

you motivated when the going gets tough. Time: for a goal to be effective, it must have a time limit. Whether it is to lower your handicap over a certain period of time, improving your fitness or preparing for upcoming Club Championships, always ensure that you set a time frame in which you must complete your goal. I hope everyone had a good Festive Season and you all donated your Christmas wrapping paper to the Ronnie Bag collector.

S.P.C.A. from the paper which is collected from the Estate. I have not got the figures as yet but hopefully will have by the time I write the next letter.

Even before Christmas I noticed lots of boxes out for collection on the street for the Municipal collection on Santa Monica Boulevard. I can forgive one lot as I know they were new residents, but the other people really haven’t got the message yet. Dressed in my usual ‘bag lady’ outfit I thought I could not let this go on, so I stopped the car and collected all the boxes that I had room for and then kept them for a few days until the Mondi men came on Friday.

Please DO think about putting boxes, paper etc. out for collection, not only is it ecologically sound practice, but also helps our two charities.
